"Black calcium cyanide is utilized mainly as a reagent for gold extraction. It is produced by reacting calcium cyanamide, sodium chloride and calcium carbide at temperatures in the range of 1200°C to 1400°C in a smothered arc furnace. The equivalent sodium cyanide content of the product is in the range of 45% to 50% and the calcium cyanamide conversion efficiency is in the range of 90% to 95%. Since black cyanide contains impurities such as salt and lime and also because the conversion efficiencies are below 100%, the product contains unwanted materials which significantly increase the shipping costs.The impurity content of the raw materials can not be lowered without increasing their cost and/or the processes to produce them, and therefore the present research was focussed on studying those factors which affect the cyanide grade. The major variables investigated were: the heating rate, the reaction temperature, the salt to cyanamide ratio, the nitrogen content of the calcium cyanamide, moisture additions and calcium carbide additions. It was found that each of these variables had a significant effect on the product grade. The highest cyanide content of the product was obtained for salt to cyanamide mass ratios of 0.55 to 0.60. The salt reduces the decomposition rate of the cyanide and, therefore, at low salt to cyanamide ratios and at higher temperatures, the product grade is decreased. It is likely that the salt evaporates at the higher reaction temperatures and this decreases the cyanide capacity of the melt. High heating rates minimize the residence time and thus salt evaporation is reduced and higher grades can be obtained. As expected, the cyanide content increased with the nitrogen content of the cyanamide. Calcium carbide additions resulted in an increase in the product grade. The presence of small amounts of moisture in the charge caused a significant decrease in the cyanide content of the black cyanide. An equilibrium reaction is postulated in order to explain the black cyanide process and in particular the effect of calcium carbide on the product grade."

The most abundant fuel resource in the U.S.A. is also the most under-utilized. Proven reserves of bituminous coal, sub-bituminous and lignite constitute from 60% to 90% of our total fossil fuel reserves -- dependent upon the parameters used by the analyst making the estimate. Despite this ample supply, bituminous coal provided only 20% of U. S. energy consumption in 1967 and 1968, this dropping to 17.57 in 1971 and 1972. By 1978, according to my projections, 16.7% of the Nation's mechanical energy will come from bituminous coal. However, our energy needs are growing at such a rate that the 20.6% provided by bituminous in 1967 equalled 480 million tons while the 16.7% of U. S. consumption visualized for 1978 will require nearly 650 million tons. In order to view coal's position with perspective in this developing energy crunch, it is necessary to examine the total energy situation. To this end, I have prepared a couple of tables which you should have before you. I chose this procedure rather than slides because I would need to utilize an entire wall to make the data visible to an audience. Therefore, I refer you to the long sheet entitled "U. S. Energy Consumption - Trillion Btu - 1967-1978." As you can see from the heading, I am confining my treatment of the problem to the intermediate term. In the long run, if we are willing to pay the cost, we can do a lot of things, including the complete conversion of coal into a sulfur-free fuel.

Over the last years, the importance of the assessment of environmental and social aspects as well as of issues of good governance has increased significantly in mining finance. For this, international standards as well as internal guidelines of the banks and other involved institutions have been established and continuously improved. Considering these standards and regulations, the banks can influence the sustainability of mining projects - and they have done so in the past -, mainly by implementing certain provisions and covenants in the loan documentation, binding the financing to the mining company’s adherence to the agreed sustainability standards. However, there are limits to the banks’ influence due to the competitive environment with other available means of financing. Nevertheless, the experience of the last years has shown that the standards and regulations bound to the financing by the banks help to lead the mining industry towards more sustainable projects.

In view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of LleweIIyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal cross-sectional area, and 6,000 Ib. in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, whiIe the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes. The length of this machine is somewhat indeterminate. A certain amount of both time and cooling surface is required to solidify the metal jn the mold; and one may either use a long molding chain and run it fast, or a shorter chain and run it correspondingly slower. "Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. "Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is currently one of the deepest block cave mines in the world. The rock mass is heavily veined with little to no joints and faults are usually healed cohesive structures leading to difficult cave mining conditions. The caving process is improved if the rock mass contains fractures with sufficient density that it will cave by gravity as undercutting progresses. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has been used to create fractures around the cave to improve mining. A seismic monitoring system has been used in DMLZ since the start of mining. Therefore, the seismic activities before, during and after HF can be monitored. Shear wave splitting is a process used to study the impacts of HF on the rock mass. This process involves the measurement of travel times from splitting shear waves after seismic events and using this to define the anisotropy within the rock mass and subsequently fracture density. This paper sets out the methodology for carrying out the interpretation of the shear wave splitting process using seismic data from the fracked cave crown and abutments along with an overview of the benefits to cave mining as result.

LAKE Shore Mines, Limited, with property at Kirkland. Lake, Ontario, was incorporated m 1914 and commenced product10n m March, 1918, with an initial capacity of about 60 tons per day. Since that time a gradual expansion has taken place until a present capacity of approximately 2,300 tons per day has been reached, giving a total annual gold production valued at approximately $16,000,000. At the time of incorporation of the Company, the Lake Shore property consisted of four mineral claims and four fractions, totalling 171.05 acres. In 1934, four claims belonging to the Minaker Kirkland Gold Mines, Limited, were acquired and a controlling interest purchased in the Kirkland Hudson Bay Gold Mines, Limited. Both these properties adjoin the Lake Shore claims on the south. From the accompanying compilation of the world's largest gold mines for 1934 (1), it will be seen that, while Lake Shore holds sixth position in respect to the number of ounces produced, there are twenty-five gold mines which treat a greater tonnage of ore. This is an indication of probably the most unusual feature of the Kirkland Lake deposits, namely, the high aver-age tenor of the ores. coupled with the comparatively large tonnages available.

The XRF Core-Scanner system performs non-destructive analysis of elements from Mg to U, in concentrations of ppm levels on split cores with digital images. Using the AVAATECH XRF Corescanner system, we conducted high resolution element analysis of deep sea sediment cores from Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone of the northeastern Pacific to reveal recent environmental changes. Comparison of data estimated by the XRF core scanner with ICP-AES showed relatively weak correlation coefficients except Mn contents. Down-core variations of most elements seem to be matched with each other and reflect changes of sediment colors. Especially Mn/Al ratio significantly change at distinct color boundaries. The variations of Mn/Al ratio with sediment colors are suggestive of changes in redox condition and further divided into two types probably affected by activities of benthic organisms. Be isotope age datings of select core (BC08-02-13) indicate that the color boundaries are approximately coincident with late Pliocene and Pleostocene also early Pliocene and late Pliocene boundary. Concrete reinforcing requires coordination among many roles: structural engineer, estimator, detailer, fabricator, installer and others. The methods used to define and represent concrete reinforcement elements and assemblies in building information models is crucial in determining the efficiency of sharing data among BIM platforms and the effectiveness of using the carried data in production planning, fabrication and site work activities. Starting from the information items that are required to be provided by BIM platforms, as defined in earlier work, we have developed the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) bound Concepts and Model View Definitions (MVDs) for concrete reinforcement. Furthermore, in coordination with software developers, we propose guidelines for best practices for concrete reinforcement modeling. Implementing these guidelines by software providers will improve reinforcement modeling with regard to various aspects of reinforcement products like geometric representation, placement, and property specifications. The proposed approach is selected as a way to improve functionality of the shared data for production planning, fabrication, project management, and site activities. Guidelines for assigning information to rebar type and instance definitions as well as to rebar elements and assemblies are provided. An efficient method of sharing geometry and property sets among rebar instances of a rebar array is also defined.

"Abstract The Gudrun field is located west of Stavanger in the North Sea at water depth of 109 m. A jacket substructure was selected to support the topside and was installed in 2011. The jacket shall be able to support 16 of 0.762 m (30 in) diameter conductors and is equipped with a drilling deck to allow for pre-drilling by a jack-up rig through the jacket. In general the soil conditions below mudline comprise of a thin top layer of very loose to dense sand overlaying several layers of sandy clay, ranging in stiffness from firm to hard. Below some 30 m depth the soil consists of layers of medium dense to dense silty sand overlaying very hard sandy clay containing thick beds of sand to 100 m depth or more below mudline. The jacket is secured to the seabed by twelve 2.438 m (96 in) diameter steel pipe piles, three at each pile cluster located at the four legs of the jacket at sea floor. Different design methods were used to determine the pile penetration depth. Pile drivability was evaluated using best estimate and upper bound soil parameters. The pile driving and blow count record show that the target penetration was reached as predicted. This paper discusses the different methods used to determine the pile capacity, target penetration depth and the drivability analyses made for the Gudrun jacket piles. The soil resistance during pile driving is back-calculated from the pile installation data and compared with the prediction made.IntroductionThe Gudrun platform is located west of Stavanger in the North Sea at water depth of 109 m. The general Gudrun platform jacket configuration is to a large extent dictated by the topside layout, the requirements for support points enclosing the well slots and access for the jack-up rig. The Gudrun platform jacket is a traditional 4 legged structure with a vertical side towards the jack-up rig. At the seabed the jacket is quadratic with a base dimension of 40 by 40 metres. Figure 1 shows the Gudrun jacket during load-out from the fabrication yard to the transport barge. At the site the jacket was lifted off the barge, upended and placed on the seabed by the installation vessel. The jacket is secured to the seabed by twelve 96"" (2.438 m) diameter steel pipe piles, three at each pile cluster located at the four legs of the jacket at sea floor. The target penetration of the piles is 47 m."

IN 1923, when the writer began his studies in metallurgy, he came upon an article by Professor Honda on the, Equilibrium Diagram of the Iron-carbon System, 1 which made a profound impression on him. What interested him most was this sentence: "In the recent diagram of the iron-carbon system, the solidus is usually shown as a curve bending considerably downward. But it can be shown by thermodynamics that if the liquidus is straight or slightly curved, the same must also be true for the solidus. Hence, in my constitutional diagram, the lower portion of the solidus is slightly bent upward." Ever since then the writer has been interested in thermodynamics, especially chemical thermodynamics. The applications of thermo-dynamics to the metallic systems have been, in the writer's opinion, sadly neglected, although we continually use the phase rule in our study of equilibria in the liquid and solid states of metallic alloys. Many investigators, among whom may be mentioned Heycock and Neville, and s Honda and his coworkers, have applied the simple Raoult-van't Hoff law of depression of freezing point, mainly to determine the heat of fusion, but no attempt has been made to investigate the applicability of the thermo-dynamic laws of solution (as opposed to the laws of solution derived from other sources) to metallic systems" showing either limited or complete solid solutions. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is that until recently there have been so few reliable data on the solidus, which is much more difficult to determine than the liquidus. The writer has under way at the present time an investigation of a number of systems, the solidi of which have been more or less reliably determined. Recently, the writer has not only shown the valid applicability of the thermodynamic laws of solution as applied to the system antimony-bismuth but has also suggested a method of attacking problems involving complete and incomplete equilibria.2 In the present paper, the same method of approach is employed. This paper discusses methods used in the estimation of natural gas reserves and the general conditions under which the various methods are applicable. The factors used in estimating natural gas reserves are reviewed. Errors which have been found to occur frequently are listed. Introduction The estimation of natural gas reserves has become of paramount interest because of the increasing importance of gas in the nation's economy. Gas is a most desirable fuel, a fact substantiated by the continued rise in the market demand. In addition, new uses for gas are being developed by the chemical, plastic, and associated industries, and plants are being built to make gasoline from natural gas. These are a few of the factors contributing to the importance of the nation's natural gas reserves. With the increased importance of gas there is an increase in the need for reliable estimates of the magnitude and availability of natural gas reserves. These estimates are being used currently: (I) to determine which fields contain sufficient available reserves to justify the construction of pipe-line outlets to serve particular markets; (2) to design pipe lines necessary to serve those fields adequately;] (3) to determine the location of industrial and chemical plants; (4) to finance the development of gas properties, and the construction of gas pipe lines; (5) to determine fair and adequate depletion allowances and depreciation rates; (6) to justify applications for gas pipe lines before various regulatory bodies; (7) to determine the number of wells required to exploit the reserves most economically; (8) to aid in establishing values for the purchase or sale of gas properties, and for purposes of inheritance taxes; (9) to determine equities under unitized operations; (10) to provide a basis for calculating the economics of gas-cycling operations. History or Estimation of Natural Gas Reserves The natural gas industry in the United States had its beginning during 1826 when natural gas was used for lighting the city of Fredonia, N. Y. The first natural gas pipe line was a 25-mi]le wooden line constructed from hollowed logs, connecting West Bloomfield and Rochester, N. Y. There is no record of an attempt to estimate the gas reserve at West Bloomfield but an attempt was made to determine the capacity of the well by measuring the time required to 611 a large balloon. One of the earlier publications concerning estimation of natural gas reserves is the "Manual for the Oil and Gas Industry," published by the Treasury Department, United States Internal Revenue, in i9i9. Reactivity of ammonium nitrate based explosives is associated with the presence of iron sulfides in the ground reacting with explosive products and in some instances causing spontaneous reactions which can lead to detonation. The stability of explosive products can also be linked to in-hole density, which influences detonation efficiency, breakage performance and the potential generation of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) fumes. Reactive ground testing involves detecting a temperature rise of a mixture of a bulk explosive product sample, a ground rock sample and some specific chemical agents. This paper describes improvements in reactive ground testing involving the use of time lapse video analysis and detection of NOX gas emissions from the sample. Reactivity is stored and linked to a using cloud based software to map of the mine showing the exact location of the sample. The location marker can be selected to allow quick access to the sample test results and video. In addition to reactivity, the stability and detonation performance of bulk product can also be influenced by depth. In this paper, a system that simulates product at depth and measures density changes and monitors the structure of bulk samples is described. Results from an explosive product are analyzed and detonation performance is assessed by the measurement of velocity of detonation and detonation pressure.

Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Tree bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Restorable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

While respirable dust monitoring has long been done on the basis of mass concentration, it is increasingly recognized that specific dust characteristics may play an important role in health outcomes. Scanning electron microscopy with energydispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) can be used for detailed particle analysis, but the quality of results can be dependent on the sample substrate; ideally, particles should be deposited on a smooth, uniform substrate like polycarbonate (PC). While direct air sampling onto PC filters is possible, this is not the standard approach in many situations. For example, in coal mines, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters are often used. They enable conventional mass-based analysis — of the total respirable dust, and the content of crystalline silica in this fraction — but are fibrous and thus not ideal for SEM-EDX or other microscopy. To address this issue, the current work tested a simple method to recover respirable dust particles from PVC filters and redeposit them to PC. Results generally indicated that recovered particles are representative of the original dust sample in terms of mineralogy distributions. Where this was not the case, the issue appeared to be with high particle loading density during SEM-EDX work rather than related to the recovery/redeposition method itself. This bodes well for applications where a single PVC filter sample could be used for nondestructive analysis to determine respirable dust mass and/or respirable silica mass, followed by preparation for SEM-EDX analysis to evaluate particle characteristics. The recovery and redeposition method might also be adapted for other applications, such as to enable the analysis of respirable dust samples collected by the continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM).

At the turn of the century, iron and coal were the keys to industrial prosperity. At that time, Pennsylvania was the leading mineral producer in the Country, producing 200,000,000 tons of coal in a typical post-World War I year. Close to 90% of the Nation's energy was generated by coal. Today, coal accounts for but 22% of the energy generated, leading to a drastic reduction in Pennsylvania coal output. In contrast with the post-World War I days, 1964 figures showed a drop in production to 93,846,480 net tons. This huge decrease has created a serious economic problem in a state so much dependent on the coal industry. Along with the reduction in coal production, employment has dropped considerably through these years (the number of miners alone has gone from 280,011 to 43,149), thus causing a heavy burden of supporting the unemployed on the taxpayers. As far back as 1939, coal operators and economists saw the problems on the horizon and the need for improvement. Realizing that research was a way to improve and stabilize the industry they demanded legislative action. The Legislature reciprocated with a small grant to The Pennsylvania State University with the provision that each State research dollar be backed with one from the industry. This initial grant laid the foundation for the further growth in coal research.

Various models are discussed for the evaluation of the negative pressures which may occur in solidifying materials which exhibit various deformation modes: elastic-plastic, Bingham, viscous, or creep flow. The inadequacy of the previously proposed elastic-plastic solution for solidifying metals is revealed by comparison with the more reliable creep results which are given graphically for aluminum, copper, nickel, and iron. The maximum tensions experienced in the liquid phase of solidifying spheres ranging in size from large castings to submicron powders are in the range from —10' to —105 atm for these metals. THERE has been much recent interest in the negative pressures associated with the volume change on solidification and in the possibility of the occurrence of cavitation. Considering the freezing of a highly supercooled liquid, an attempt to evaluate the stresses in the liquid ahead of the rapidly moving solidification front has been made by Horvay1 on a microscale and by Glicksman2 on a macroscale. In a casting of a wide freezing range alloy, the pressure differential due to viscous flow of residual liquid through the pasty zone has been discussed by Piwonka and Flemings,3 In a previous publication4 the author has attempted to estimate the negative pressure occurring in the residual liquid of a spherical casting, employing an elastic-plastic model to describe the collapse of the solidified shell under the internal tension. An earlier model assuming a rigid shell was shown to be inaccurate by many orders of magnitude. The elastic-plastic model is critically reviewed here, and other models are developed which are thought to be more closely related to metals and other materials near their melting points. The spherical geometry (Fig. 1) is chosen because the highest shrinkage pressures would be developed, although the analyses are readily adaptable to cylindrical geometry. A parallel sided casting experiences little internal tension because of the relatively easy dishing inward of the sides. (This commonly observed phenomenon has previously been attributed solely to atmospheric pressure.) Furthermore, small regions of confined liquid in a large solidified volume of a casting approximate reasonably well to spherical geometry. ELASTIC-PLASTIC MODEL The author has shown4 that as solidification proceeds the internal hydrostatic tension builds up until the elastic limit of the shell is exceeded. At this point the internal pressure is closely -2Y/3. Subsequently a plastic zone spreads from the inner surface toward the outer surface of the shell. When the whole casting is deforming plastically a rather more generalized analysis taking account of the externally applied pressure PA + 2y/b gives the internal pressure as: P = Pa + 2y/a + 2ys/b - 2 Y In(b/a) [1] The 2y/a and 2ys/b terms result from the tendency of the liquid-solid and solid-vapor interfaces to shrink, reducing their energy, and thereby helping to collapse the solid phase and compress the liquid phase. The 2y/b term would be important only for powders. The last term arises because of the plastic restraint of the solid, resisting collapse and so effectively expanding the residual liquid. From Eq. [I] it is easily shown that there is a minimum in the pressure at the radius amia= y/Y [2] which is of the order of 103K for the metals aluminum, copper, and iron, and corresponds to the minimum pressure Pmin = 2 Y[l-ln(bY/y [3] The results of a fully worked out elastic-plastic solution are given in a previous reporL4 The main criticism which may be leveled at this analysis when applied to metals at their melting points is the strong dependence of the yield stress on the strain rate. The strain rate varies with both solidification conditions (e.g., whether chill-cast or slowly cooled) and during solidification, as is indicated in the following section. Thus an appropriate choice of Y is very arbitrary. Before proceeding to a discussion of models which are strain-rate-dependent, it is necessary to evaluate the strain rate as a function of the rate of solidification. SOLIDIFICATION RATE Various empirical relations have been deduced5 for the rate of thickening of the solid shell by pour- out tests on partially solidified spheres. These, however, are unsatisfactory for our purposes since they become very inaccurate when the liquid core is very small. A theoretical approach is therefore necessary, and some solutions are set out below. The use of a blast platform is detailed which include blast designs, blast data collection and the trends in terms of results.

Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.
