Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.

THESE observations of the metal-working industries of Europe are based on a three months' tour of eight countries of Europe, in which 75 industrial establishments were visited in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Austria and Switzerland during the summer of 1927. Since the Western Electric Co. is a large consumer of copper and brass, these industries were of particular interest and differences in practices were of keen interest to us.

Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

Efficient drill-and-blast performance is pivotal to the profitability of deep-level mines, where high operating costs and declining grades demand maximum throughput. This study investigated persistent fragmentation problems at a longhole stoping operation that suffered from simultaneous oversized rock blockages in 300 mm × 300 mm grizzlies and excessive fines. Fifty-one muckpile images from five blasted stopes were analysed with Split-Desktop. Although the overall F₈₀ was 287 mm, nominally suitable for the grizzly aperture, the Rosin- Rammler uniformity index of 0.80 revealed a highly inconsistent size distribution containing both boulders and fines. Existing drill patterns were then evaluated with the Aegis underground software, which showed negligible crack overlap at the toe owing to inadequate spacing and burden. Insufficient energy overlap between blastholes, particularly at the toe, was found to contribute to the coarse fragmentation, while excessive fines were attributed to the crushing and severely fractured zones of blastholes. Optimisation simulations demonstrated that an 89 mm blasthole diameter on a 2 m × 2 m pattern would overlap, aligning with Aegis requirements of balancing powder factor, break angle, and energy distribution. Implementing this revised pattern is expected to reduce secondary breaking, prevent ore-pass blockages, lower fines, and ultimately improve overall production efficiency. The methodology illustrates how integrated image analysis and modelling software can effectively diagnose and address fragmentation issues, particularly in underground longhole mining, where challenging blasting conditions require a balance between achieving optimal fragmentation and maintaining stope stability. This approach offers a cost-effective pathway to improving comminution performance in deeplevel mines.

A comprehensive study of the effects of hydraulically fracturing water-flood wells in Oklahoma has been made by the Federal Bureau of Mines. This report presents results of that study and an analysis of some of the factors governing the results of fracture treatment on waterflood properties. Originally, hydraulic fracturing was used to stimulate oil production from old wells producing by primary methods, and its application to water-flooding was regarded with skepticism by most producers. However, since 1953 the number of fracture treatments of both oil and input wells in waterfloods has increased steadily. Hydraulic-fracture treatments in waterfloods have generally been successful in stimulating production from oil wells and increasing the rate of injection into input wells. Hydraulic fracturing has enabled several producers to turn probable failures into economically successful projects.

Fortescue Metals Group flagship operation, Cloudbreak, is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The mine is capable of delivering an annualised production rate of 40 Mt/a. Positioned 50 km to the east of Cloudbreak is Fortescue’s Christmas Creek operation, which has a combined processing capacity in excess of 50 Mt/a. Following on from these successes, Fortescue advanced development of its western Pilbara mines at the 60 Mt/a Solomon Hub. These processing installations place Fortescue in a strong position to deliver on a guidance of between 155–160 Mt/a for financial year 2014/2015.As Fortescue enters a phase of asset consolidation and debt repayment over expansion, the business is commanding stronger performance through enhanced plant operating practices and mine site cost reduction initiatives. To this end, the strategic placement of instrumentation is an area being given greater consideration. Access to real-time information pertaining to conveyed materials is of major interest to operators for making timely process control decisions. Fortescue has recognised the importance of accurate and up-to-date process information about their ores and hence, has adopted the use of Scantech’s Geoscan mineral analysers at two of their mines.There are two Geoscans at Cloudbreak; one on the ROM feed conveyor and another on the final product conveyor. These allow the in-feed material grade characteristics to be assessed. Moreover, the final product stream can be monitored to ensure product quality is maintained within acceptable quality tolerances. A third Geoscan is installed at Christmas Creek mine on a conveyor that transfers final products to Stockyards.This paper discusses the use of the Geoscans in these installations, including benefits to Fortescue’s operations, as well as functional considerations such as the impact of maintenance and calibration. In. East Kootenay, two Companies are operating, the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company of Fernie, with mines at Coal Creek and Michel, and the Corbin Coal and Coke Company, of Corbin and Spokane. Wash., with mines at Corbin. The Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company has also coke-ovens of the bee-hive type at Fernie and Michel. The mines have a productive capacity, with present development and plant, of approximately 1,500,000 tons of coal, and of 300,000 tons of coke annually. The total production in 1923 was 828, 990 tons of coal and 65.990 tons of coke. In the early years of operation, the mines furnished a very large percentage of their output to the railways and smelters. These were, in fact, the primary markets for which the mines were opened and the ovens constructed. The Great Northern Railway had built into Femie, and later extending its line to Michel, became a heavy consumer of both of these mines. The Spokane International, connecting the Crow's Nest branch of the C.P .R. with Spokane, furnished tonnage to Corbin. The Canadian Pacific Railway bought for Crow's Nest consumption. The smelters at Grand Forks and Trail in the Boundary country were large and steady consumers of coke, while in-termittently Northport, Butte, Helena, and Great Falls shared in the product of the ovens.

This paper is one of a series prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines discussing the methods used in crushing and grinding materials for cement manufacture, and deal particularly with the methods used at the Howes Cave plant of the North American Cement Corporation. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

Driven piles are a common tool in any engineer’s toolbox for supporting large structures over very soft ground, especially in high seismic risk zones. Challenges include achieving sufficient vertical and lateral load capacities within the constraints of pile spacing and geologic conditions. This was the case for a project in Orange County, California with a state-of-the-art, $180 million plant for biosolids processing, biogas management and energy recovery located in marshland next to an existing waste water treatment plant. The new construction for the Irvine Ranch Water District included a 70-foot (21 m) tall building and three closely spaced, 90-foot (27 m) high, 65-foot (20 m) diameter, egg-shaped steel digester tanks. The lower 35-feet (11 m) of the tanks were constructed below ground level. The site was underlain by up to 45 feet (14 m) of highly compressible peat and organic clays with standard penetration test (SPT) blows as low as 2 blows/ft (30 cm). Some of the peat layers had measured in-situ dry densities of less than 30 pcf (480 kg/m3) with moisture contents of over 250 percent. The soft clays and peat were underlain by a dense layer of sand and gravel at depth. Groundwater was very shallow. While nearby sites were designated by others as seismic site class “D”, this site was clearly class “F” (SF) which required site specific seismic hazard and time history analyses. Six recorded time histories were selected from the 1994 Northridge, 1989 Loma Prieta (California) and 1999 Chi Chi (Taiwan) earthquakes for the ground motion analysis considering the magnitude of the earthquake, distance to the source, characteristics of the earthquake source (i.e. type of fault displacement), peak ground acceleration, local site geology, station type (i.e. free-field or small structure stations), and spectral content that was similar to the period range of interest. Following ASCE’s Guideline Document 7-05, a site-specific horizontal acceleration response spectra (ARS) was developed for the maximum credible earthquake (MCE) associated with the site.

In order to understand what governs the leaching of exchangeable rare earth (RE) and impurities and enhance the RE leaching process, the effects of the concentration of ammonium sulfate, pH and leaching temperature on the migration of RE and aluminum (Al) during the leaching of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore was studied. The elution curves for ammonium ion (NH4 +) were also studied to reduce the consumption of the leaching agent. It was found that a high concentration of leaching agent can enhance the leaching process of RE and Al, reduce the breakthrough volume of NH4 + and more rapidly obtain the equilibrium of NH4 +. However, excessive leaching agent can both increase the cost and the burden on the environment. There is almost no variation on the elution curves of RE and Al in the pH range of 4-8 and control of the pH of the leaching agent can be omitted. It is better for the leaching work to be done in summer since higher temperatures can enhance the RE leaching process and improve the use ratio of ammonium. Using 0.1 mol/L ammonium sulfate for leaching 250 g RE ore, 95.42% RE extraction can be obtained when the volume of leachate is 102.6 mL. At this moment, only 18.17% of NH4 + is used to exchange RE and 49.22% of NH4 + is left in the leachate that can be reused as leaching agent by replenishing ammonium sulfate. The results of our studies can provide theoretical guidance for high efficiency and low consumption exploitation of RE ores.

"AbstractThe uraninite-bearing deposits in the Charlebois Lake area of northeastern Saskatchewan are unusual and important concentrations of uranium. They were first discovered in 1949 and preliminary development work to the end of the 1951 field season indicates the probability that this will become •another uranium producing district. The deposits are in zones bordering granite masses. These zones are of migmatite (mixed rocks) composed of calcium-rich meta-sediments intruded and replaced by a fine-grained white pegmatite. Locally this pegmatite is replaced by an end fraction which is relatively rich in fine-grained disseminated uraninite; it is these occurrences that constitute the bodies of economic interest.The fine-grained white pegmatite contains plagioclase feldspar more lime-rich than that in the granites of which it is an end differentiate. This extra lime, evidently derived from the intruded sediments, would result in the raising of the temperature of crystallization of the pegmatite-forming magma, thus consolidating it rapidly near the granite contacts as a fine-grained pegmatite. The end liquor containing uranium was evidently locally concentrated in minor fracture zones in these pegmatites. Where no lime sediments were present. the coarse-grained alkaline pegmatites were formed. Their crystallization would not be accelerated and the uranium would tend not to be localized in the pegmatite but to migrate and consolidate at lower temperatures with the end products, possibly in some instances as pitchblende veins."

Zeta potentials and settling rates of an oil sands tailings sample taken from Syncrude Canada Ltd's Aurora Stacker Pilot Operation were studied. Two clay minerals, kaolinite and illite, were also studied since these are the major constituent minerals in the fine oil sands tailings. Process water, decanted water as well as distilled water were used. It was observed that the zeta potentials of the tailings solids showed maximum negative values in process water at pH 8-10, which coincides with the pH of commercial hot water bitumen extraction process. The settling rates of the tailings sample were very low, at 0.008 m/hr in decanted water and 0.04 m/hr in process water. The rates were increased to 1.0 m/hr in decanted water and 0.13 m/hr in process water at an addition of 50 g/t Ciba AF1235. Although the settling rate was higher the supernatant was cloudier in decanted water than in process water. Further increase in the dosages of Ciba AF1235 did not increase the settling rates in decanted water but gradually increased it in process water, reaching 0.46 m/hr at 100 g/t. The results indicated that lower concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2 (in decanted water) benefited settling rates but did not benefit supernatant clarity. Test results also indicated that Ciba AF1235 caused selective flocculation of the tailings sample, since the top sediments had higher illite and lower quartz contents than the bottom sediments.

With the aim to reduce the hot metal production cost, ArcelorMittal Gent decided to integrate more ores with finer particle size distribution in the raw material mix for the production of blast furnace sinter. As a consequence of such an increase of finer material in the sinter raw mix, the sinter machine productivity and the quality of the sinter are affected. In order to compensate this impact, modern granulation technology can be employed. Within this context, ArcelorMittal Gent has invested in a vertical intensive mixer. The equipment was placed before the existing drums, with a function of “mixer”, whereas the drums are fully optimised for the nodulizing process. The paper presents the results of the industrial operation during the commissioning phase of the new equipment. Gradually increasing the proportion of fine material in the sinter raw mix has made it possible to compare the performances of the old system using drums for mixing and pelletizing with the new system using an intensive mixer combined with a nodulizing.

In looking to the future of mineral processing the focus is typically on improved processing units. Basically it is a search for an elusive wonder machine that could revolutionise the economy of mining: the sorter that strips 50% of the ore with only a few % loss of value; the comminution device that uses 5% of the energy while producing fully liberated particles; or the recovery device capable of producing a 99% recovery at 99% grade. These aspirations are propounded against a reality backdrop of sorters rusting in back yards, mill throughputs below design and varying by 30%, cyclones flaring and cut-sizes fluctuating, mediocre recoveries and soaring processing costs. This disconnect between aspiration and reality appears, to these authors at least, to be a mighty chasm. Moreover, it remains one over which we are expected to magically leap rather than methodically bridge. Indeed one may be forgiven for thinking that should such a wonder machine come along, taking advantage of it would be highly improbable. Questions would inevitably emerge on how to feed the correct material, how to cope with the wide variability of feeds, how to control such advanced equipment and how to handle the new product from such a machine. It is likely these questions might lie unanswered, or more regrettably, unasked. It is generally accepted that as an industry we are exceedingly unlikely to teleport from the current status quo to an entirely new reality in a single flash. It is our thesis that the probability of these magical machines materialising is remote, and even if they miraculously appeared, we simply wouldn?t know what to do with them. Rather, it is our contention, that a step change will only arise through a staircase rather than from a single giant leap. We should focus on building those steps and linking them together into a firm structure ? a workable mineral processing circuit. This paper addresses the alternative of a coherent set of modest but significant improvements, integrated to produce the step change we desire: essentially, a reduction of processing energy to below 40%, which we believe is achievable without recourse to any mystical machines. A key underlying capability to designing these dramatically improved processes, is the weaving of independent process models into a coherent circuit simulation, in order to design the new generation of mineral processing circuits. Mud-analysis logging provides identification of the fluid content of formations drilled by the rotary method and permits the accurate correlation of oil and gas shows with the depth. Mud-analysis logging eliminates much coring and has an especially important application in drilling programs when coring is particularly hazardous or the electric log is difficult to interpret correctly. An appreciation of the factors that influence the results of the mud analysis, such as rate of penetration, mud properties, coring, and characteristics of reservoir rock as related to the "flushing effect," permits a better understanding of the mud-analysis log. Recent studies of the relationship of the two gas readings obtained by the gas-detector instrument have proved significant. The difference between the total combustible gas reading and the higher molecular weight gas reading indicates the presence of methane. With few exceptions, zones not showing an increase of methane probably can be condemned. Mud-analysis logging furnishes valuable information, which generally cannot be obtained by other methods. Introduction Logging by mud analysis of wells drilled with rotary tools is a direct method of locating oil-and-gas-bearing formations. The use of this method of logging has increased each year until now more than 20 field units are being used in 13 oil-producing states and in some foreign countries. Several papers1-9 have been published in the petroleum trade journals describing in detail the equipment and the application of mud-analysis logging. This paper will discuss briefly the method and review its application and some of the late developments. Method As the drilling of a well progresses, the drilling bit dislodges and disintegrates a cylindrical section of the formation. If oil or gas is contained in the pore spaces of the cylinder, some of the contents of these porous spaces will be entrained in the drilling fluid. In wall logging by mud analysis, the mud is continuously examined for oil and gas on its return to the surface, and the results are correlated back to the actual depth of the hole at the time the mud was clearing the eyes of the bit. The test for gas is made by diverting a portion of the circulating mud from the flow line to a separator or gas trap, where the mud is thoroughly mixed with air and a portion of the gas entrained in the mud is removed. A stream of air is drawn coun-tercurrent to the flow of mud in the gas trap, thus materially assisting the separation of the gas from the mud. The air-gas mixture is then drawn into a "hot-wire" gas-detector instrument where the percentage of the combustible gas is determined. The presence of oil in the formation drilled is detected by a physical examination of the drilling mud under ultraviolet light. A sample of the mud is treated to reduce the surface tension and gel strength, after which it is placed in a viewing box. The energy structure and consumption ratio in China determine the practical demand for the collaborative mining of coal and co-associated resources. The multi-layer mining of coal, uranium, coalbed methane, and oil and gas co-associated resources, represented by the Ordos Basin, Junggar Basin, and Tarim Basin, faces numerous challenges. Additionally, coal has been found to coexist with various mineral resources in 33 coal-bearing basins worldwide. The scientific issues related to the multi-layer development of coal related co-associated resources urgently need to be addressed. This paper discusses the unique challenges and potential solutions in the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources. The challenges include large extraction space, high mining intensity, intense overburden movement, rapid surface subsidence, and severe overburden damage due to repeated mining disturbances. Proposed solutions include the establishment of a correlation mechanism between multi-layer mining and the carrying capacity of the overburden environment, analysis of the impact characteristics of multiple field couplings, and exploration of their superposition evolution laws. The paper also proposes the development of a comprehensive evaluation and prediction system for overburden environmental capacity loss, a global sensitivity analysis model for overburden environmental capacity, and an intelligent identification and early warning system based on multi-source information fusion. These solutions aim to achieve scientific and precise mining with minimal overburden environmental capacity loss. And the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources is a complex task that requires a multidisciplinary approach and innovative solutions, and further research is needed to validate these strategies and explore new methods and technologies for efficient and sustainable extraction.

"THERE HAS BEEN a marked growth in the petroleum industry in Canada since the end of the war. The rate of growth in the demand for oil products has exceeded that in United States, although the per capita consumption is still less. Estimates of the consumption of petroleum and petroleum products in Canada in 1951 are approximately 154,000,000 barrels, which is slightly more than 11 •barrels per capita, whereas the estimated consumption in United States for the same period, according to World Petroleum, is placed at 2,619,- 970,000 barrels. This, on the basis of a population of 154,000,000, would be equivalent to 17 barrels per capita. The increase in consumption of the petroleum and products is world wide. World production in 1951 has been estimated (Oil and Gas Journal) at 11,700,000 barrels a day or more than 41;4, billion barrels for the year. United States production increased 13.7 per cent to 6,143,000 •barrels a day and Canada'.s ,, total production increased about 65 per cent from a total of 29,091,235 •barrels in 1950 to an estimated (Dominion Bureau of Statistics) 48,096,800 barrels in 1951.The trend to use increased amounts of petroleum and petroleum products, particularly in the United States and Canada, has also been supplemented by increased use of natural gas. The rate of expansion of the consumption of natural gas in United States in the past few years has been very rapid, increasing from 2,600 billion cubic feet in 1940 to 5,975 billion in 1950, with the proven reserves in the same period increasing from 85,000 billion to 186,000 billion cubic feet."

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.
