Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

"Two titania slags, rutile and synthetic rutile were chlorinated with petroleum coke and CO in a small bubbling fluidized bed reactor. The study aims to identify differences in chlorination mechanism, compare conversion rates, blowover and the chlorination of impurities for the various titania feedstocks at different temperatures.Chlorination rates were highest at 1000ºC; rutile chlorination significantly increases as temperature increases from 800ºC to 1000ºC. At 1000ºC, synthetic rutile had the highest chlorination conversion rate; this was followed by Slag B which in turn was more reactive than Slag A and rutile. The mechanism for slag, synthetic rutile (SR) and rutile chlorination differs. Synthetic rutile feed is porous, providing a larger surface area for the chlorination reaction, hence the highest conversion rates was attained. Titania slag becomes porous with the initial chlorination of FeO and MnO whilst rutile remains solid. As the porosity of slag particles increases so does its tendency to be elutriated. Ti2O3 is oxidized within the early stages of chlorination during the chlorination of FeO and MnO. Ti2O3 not oxidized is then rapidly chlorinated.IntroductionTitanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most common compound of titanium, about 95 - 98% of extracted titanium minerals is processed into TiO2 white pigment [1]. Two processing routes exist for the production of TiO2 pigments, i.e., sulphate and chloride based processes. In the chloride process, titania feedstock is fed to a fluidized bed reactor together with reductant and chlorine gas. A temperature of 1000 - 1300ºC is maintained in the reaction zone and apart from silica, zirconia, uranium and thorium, virtually all the metal oxides in the feed are converted to their respective chlorides [2]. Chlorine is recovered and recycled back to the reactor."

In recent years, the importance of slag control in basic open-hearth operations has been universally recognized. To effect such control during the working period of the heat, methods have been developed to measure or estimate slag oxidation and slag basicity. While satisfactory rapid chemical methods have been developed to determine slag oxidation, no completely adequate method of evaluating basicity has yet been provided. The most generally accepted control methods of measuring slag basicity are based on visual cstimates. While considerable benefit may be derived from such estimates, the need for some measurable indication of slag basicity has become increasingly apparent. In a recent paper, Philbrook and Jolly suggested a promising technique for making the basicity determination. Their method consists of measuring the pH of a mixture of powdered open-hearth slag and distilled water. It was found that a relation could be established between the slag basicity and the alkalinity of the water mixture as measured by the hydrogen-ion concentration. The general procedure followed in making the measurements and the considerations involved in constructing the original curves are given in the paper of Philbrook and Jolly and need not be repeated. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss some of the factors considered in applying the pH measurements to actual slag control and to present some of the results of its apphcation. Factors Involved in Measuring pH of Water-slag Mixtures To facilitate the application of the pH control system, it was desirable that no alteration be made in the routine methods of sampling and crushing the furnace slag. Some of the factors considered before establishing a curve to relate slag basicity with the pH reading arc reviewed individually in the following paragraphs. Effect of Cooling Rate Under actual operating conditions there can be considerable variation in the temperature of the piece of slag crushed for the pH determination. To determine whether variations in crushing temperature or in cooling rate would affect the pH reading, a series of four samples was prepared from each of two separate slags. These samples represented conditions far more extreme than would actually be encountered. To obtain these samples, a thick pancake of slag was poured. One piece of this pancake was crushed immediately after it had solidified. Another piece was water-quenched and then crushed. "Robex Resources interrupted production at the Nampala Mine in September 2014 following throughput and gold recovery results which were below expectations during the first months of operation. After a thorough plant audit, an important brainstorming took place in order to identify an economical path to resume production. It was clearly identified that a significant investment was necessary at the concentrator prior to restarting the plant, namely the addition of a ball mill and a new elution system.The mineral processing simulation software USIM PAC was used in order to simulate the grinding circuit in design. The simulations’ outputs allowed the ball mill characteristics and the surrounding classification devices to be designed with more accuracy. Many ball mills available from second hand retailers were therefore studied in the simulated circuit. The chosen ball mill, which was in perfect condition, had the advantage of being available for rapid delivery on site.The paper first describes the ball mill sizing method in comparison with the conventional Allis Chalmers method. It then describes the phase 2 concentrator start-up (that took place in 2016) with the commissioning of the ball mill, the classification circuit, the gravity concentration, the four (4) new carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks, and the Zadra elution system (The phase 1 start-up took place in 2014). It finally provides production data compared to expected simulation data, as commercial production was reached in January 2017.IntroductionDesigning a new concentrator or new equipment within an existing concentrator requires significant efforts to identify possible bottlenecks and their causes (i.e. limiting equipment or sectors) and accurate sizing of major equipment can have a tremendous impact on the economy of the whole project. In the presented case study, the ball mill was the critical equipment and oversizing it could have brought the Capex to a level where the project would not have gone through. Inversely, undersizing the mill could have resulted in lower production and therefore no economic viability for the project once it is in operation.During engineering studies, equipment sizing often relies on a static mass balance and one-by-one sizing of all pieces of equipment. The sizing is then left to the equipment manufacturer or in the case of mills, evaluated with empirical models mostly relying on the Bond equations (Allis Chalmers method) [Rowland and Kjos, 1978]. This methodology shows the disadvantage of not considering interaction between equipment in a mineral processing circuit, especially when recirculation occurs. Also, it has the disadvantage of not using the more advanced grinding models that include the use of the whole particle size distribution as well as phenomenological components by only using limited parameters in the ore particle size distribution (i.e. the P80). This can be explained by the lack of data that sometimes needs to be gathered in order to tune the more advanced models but also by the conservative mindset in mineral concentration engineering which does not always favor the use of process simulation. In many aspects of process engineering, Soutex has demonstrated its affinity to using simulation in order to size equipment with more accuracy, consider process variability, simulate complex systems, and study supply chain management (Berton et al., 2015)."

"The kinetic study for the leaching of iron from cassiterite ore in KOH solution was studied. The effects of KOH concentration, particle size and reaction temperature on the leaching rate of iron were also examined. The results of leaching studies showed that the leaching of iron from cassiterite ore in KOH solution is significantly influenced by the reaction temperature, KOH concentration, and decrease in particle size. The study showed that 90.62% of iron ore was leached in 8M KOH solution at 80°C within 120 minutes. The experimental data were well evaluated using the shrinking model for surface chemical reaction and diffusion control through the product layer. The activation energies for the iron ore dissolution using the two models were calculated to be 32.06KJmor1 and 97.97 KJmor' respectively.IntroductionIn recent times, there has been increasing attention on the kinetic study of mineral dissolution. In most of these studies, the experimental results were analyzed with a suitable shrinking core model under the assumption that the ore is a homogeneous spherical solid phase [1-4]. A study of the dissolution kinetics of a Nigerian cassiterite ore by hydrochloric acid showed that increase in the hydrochloric acid concentration is accompanied with increase in the amount of cassiterite ore dissolved at various times [4]. The optimal concentration was found to be 4.0M HCl, after which there was a decline in the amount of the ore dissolved, which showed that the concentration of the reagent has a significant effect on the leaching rate of the ore. Also in studying the effect of stirring speed on the rate of cassiterite ore dissolution while keeping other conditions constant for 120 minutes, the result showed that the rate of cassiterite ore dissolution was dependent on the stirring speed over a range of 0 to 630 rpm. Above 360 rpm, the stirring speed no longer had any effect on the solid dissolution. The dissolution rates of cassiterite were analyzed using a suitable shrinking model. The results showed that the reaction was controlled by the diffusion of tin through the porous product layer, a reaction order with respect to hydrogen ion concentration of 0.92 M and activation energy of 50.05KJmor'. In another kinetic study on the leaching of a low grade niobium-tantalum ore with concentrated KOH solution the effect ofreaction temperature, KOH concentration, agitation speed, particle size and alkali-to-ore mass ratio on the dissolution rate of niobium were examined [5]. The result of niobium leaching from low grade niobium-tantalum ore with concentrated KOH, solution at different agitation speeds showed that the dissolution rate increased with increase in agitation rate. In the case of particle size effect, the results show that small particles require much shorter time for complete dissolution than the large ones."

El Complejo Pasco —ubicado en la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes de la sierra central del Perú, en el distrito de San Francisco de Asís, provincia y departamento de Pasco— está constituido por las unidades subterráneas de Atacocha y Porvenir, la operación a tajo abierto Glory Hole y tres proyectos brownfield ubicados en la periferia de la concesión. Tanto Atacocha como Porvenir son depósitos tipo skarn, con mineralización distal de Zn y Pb(+/-Au) y proximal de Zn+/-Cu, asociados a cuerpos hipoabisales de composición cuarzoandesítica y andesítica. Estudios y exploraciones recientes muestran otros tipos de sistemas mineralizados, como brechas tectónicas con reactivación hidrotermal tardía, un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia en vetas, cuerpos irregulares, entre otros, y un sistema tipo pórfido. La Falla Milpo-Atacocha, de rumbo N-S, juega un rol importante, ya que los intrusivos (Stock Milpo y Santa Bárbara) que generan la mineralización del tipo skarn están controlados por esta falla. Existe otro tipo de mineralización, asociado al sistema NW-SE (Falla 13): un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia. Este trabajo pretende mostrar los últimos avances en las interpretaciones metalogenéticas, producto de un intenso programa de exploración (aproximadamente 80,000 m. DDH / 2018) y de un programa de recategorización de recursos (a través de 60,000 m. DDH), que permitirá hacer posible una operación sostenible de 12 años.

The Burrell methane indicator developed by Col. G. A. Burrell in 1915 was modified during 1918 to the " insulated type " Burrell indicator . Though this instrument has been used in mines since its first introduction , it was not formally approved as safe and efficient for use in gaseous mines until March , 1922. The indicator is built by the Mine Safety Appliances Co. , Pittsburgh , Pa . Approval No. 800 has been assigned to this company covering the device in the form approved . The principle of the Burrell indicator is fairly well known . It works on the same principle as the Haldane apparatus - measuring by means of a graduated scale , the contraction resulting from burning the methane content of an air and gas sample . A given aniount of the mine atmosphere to be tested for methane is taken into the indicator . This sample is then thoroughly shaken with the water in the indicator for one minute . The methane in the sample is now burned for two minutes by a heated platinum coil , which is energized by a small storage battery containing two Edison cells connected in series . After the glower or coil has burned for two minutes , it is disconnected from the battery , and the indicator is again shaken for The amount of contraction observed by reading the height the water rises in the U- tube of the indicator , which is calibrated to register the percentage of gas in the sample . The indicator as approved by the Bureau of Mines is equipped with an Edison M- 8 mine- lamp battery , and with a glass and scale graduated from zerɔ tɔ four per cent methane . The approval of a corbination service that is , an attachment for giving illumination from the same battery from which the platinum glower is operated has been withheld pending the development of a battery with larger capacity . - Under laboratory operating conditions , a single glower was capable of making at least 20 determinations if proper precautions were observed with respect to the use of freshly charged batteries . A battery should be allowed to stand off charge several hours before using in an indicator , as the peak voltage of a freshly charged Edison cell is abnormally high and is likely to send enough current through the glower to melt the platinum wire . Fifty-seven satisfactory operations were obtained from a completely charged battery . The point where the voltage of the cell fell below 2.3 volts with the glower attached was taken as the lower limit of successful operation . A voltage less than 2.3 does not permit the lower to burn at a temperature that will completely burn the gas in the air , thus giving a false indication .

The San Manuel is a deposit of low-grade disseminated copper ore. It was brought to the attention of the government in October 1942 through an application to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a development loan, supported by a report by Henry W. Nichols. Nichols' sampling of two outcrops containing copper silicate and his geologic map indicated that a minable body of copper ore might be developed. The Federal Geological Survey was requested to examine the property. The Survey mapped the geology in March 1943 and cut a few check samples, which substantially confirmed Nichols' sampling of the outcrops and a few shallow workings. The geologists of the Survey recommended some test drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The property was examined by the author and Wm. D. Hughes, associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines on March 22 and 26, 1943, and a preliminary drilling campaign was recommended. Five shallow churn-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were put down under the supervision of Chas. A. Kumke, one of the Bureau's engineers, from November 23, 1943, to January 13, 1944. This work indicated that the deposit extended deeper than the 350-foot depth attained in the deepest hole and might have very considerable areal extent. Additional funds were allotted, and the drilling contract was extended twice to a final maximum of 17,000 feet with 2,000 feet maximum depth of hole. Drilling was continued by the Bureau of Mines until February 2, 1945, when 15,844 feet of hole had been drilled. The Magna Copper Co. took options on this and adjoining property in September 1944 and commenced drilling with two machines. It also engaged the two contract drills used by the Bureau after it stopped drilling. It exercised its options in August 1945 and organized the San Manuel Copper Corp. to operate the property. That company is continuing to explore the ore body with six churn drills. Thomas Lyon took options early in 1945 on holdings adjoining the San Manuel property on the east and is operating two churn drills. Exploration up to the completion of the last holes started by the Bureau of Mines indicated a block of ore 3,100 feet long, 400 to 800 feet wide, and 500 to 900 feet thick, and averaging about 0.8 percent copper. Subsequent drilling showed that the ore body extends considerably beyond this block. The axis of the ore body strikes about N. 61° E. Copper minerals are disseminated in hydrothermally altered quartz monzonite and monzonite porphyry. Ore outcrops in two small areas over the northeast part of the block. Elsewhere the copper-bearing rocks are capped by Gila conglomerate, which thickens toward the west and south. Drilling showed that the ore is in a thick, tabular body with a steep dip to the south. The ore body lies near the surface in the northeastern part of the block. The south side of the block is much farther below the surface than the north side. There the upper part of the copper-bearing rocks is lightly mineralized, so that the hanging wall of minable ore lies deeper than the base of the conglomerate cap, which thickens southward.

The interaction of soluble salt particles in their saturated brines is of interest from both a fundamental and practical perspective. The state of dispersion/aggregation of alkali halide particles as determined by optical microscopy can now be described based on non-equilibrium electrokinetic measurements for alkali halides. These results indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. These experimental results can be explained based on the interfacial polar interaction theory. In this regard the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems.

The brewing industry byproduct, spent grain (SG), was evaluated for its ability to adsorb Ag(I) from aqueous solutions. Ag(I) adsorption was dependent on solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial Ag(I) concentration and temperature. The kinetic data were well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that chemical adsorption was the rate-controlling step. The equilibrium data followed Freundlich isotherm rather than Langmuir isotherm, suggesting heterogenity of the adsorption sites on spent grain. Ag(I) desorbed from Ag(I)-loaded spent grain was also evaluated in this study. HCl, NaOH, Na2S2O3 and ultrapure water were chosen as eluants and desorbed Ag(I)-loaded spent grain for 30min, Ag(I)-loaded spent grain desorbed in 0.1M Na2S2O3 exhibited higher elution efficiency as compared with other eluants. The results indicated that application of spent grain for adsorption and recovery of silver from aqueous solutions was feasible.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) and A-P-T Research, Inc (APT) have developed and released a quantitative risk management tool, IMESAFR (IME Safety Analysis For Risk), for the commercial explosives industry. Consequence algorithms in IMESAFR are considered state-of-the-art. Generally, they mirror those in SAFER (US Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board quantitative risk management software). The science behind the software has now been assessed for its maturity. Results have identified areas where additional test consequence data could improve predictions. To address these areas, full-scale testing programs to provide the needed data have been formulated. Proposed testing efforts include work to: (1) improve characterization of explosive articles now absent from SAFER, and (2) refine modeling of the Potential Explosion Site (PES) types, particularly small metal structures, also not found in SAFER. Goals of each program as well as requirements for conducting the tests have been established. Testing results are to be used to improve the algorithms and to further the state-of-the-art in risk-based explosives safety.

Control of ground water for construction purposes is an everyday occurrence in the U.S. Thousands of pumps are in service at any given time. Most of these applications simply consist of pumping water out of an excavation, generally with the aid of sumps. Modern hydraulic and electric submersible pumps permit these procedures because of their ability to pump solids and take air without losing their prime. These procedures work fine up to a point and permit the contractor to control his ground water problems adequately and at minimal cost. When that point is exceeded, the ground water problems sometimes are compounded. Over-application of open pumping techniques can result in slope failures, cofferdam instability, bottom heaving, boils, loss of ground, damage to adjacent structures and utilities, and assorted other maladys which could and should be avoided. This paper will deal with the options involved in ground water control, a discussion of the unwanted side effects of dewatering, and examples of ground water control projects in various cities around the U.S.

This publication is one of a series by the Federal Bureau of Minus describing methods and costs of minim, uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The La Sal mine is in the Big Indian mining district, about 29 miles southeast of Moab, San Juan County, Utah. The claims that encompass the mine were located in March 1953, and the La Sal ore body was discovered as a result of a drilling program begun in August 1953. The mine is owned by the La Sal Mining & Development Co., a subsidiary of the Homestake Mining Co. Homestake continued the drilling program and in May 1954 began sinking a 572-foot shaft and constructing a surface plant. The plant and shaft were completed in October 1954. The La Sal ore body is in the Chinle (Triassic) formation. it is tabular and dips with the enclosing beds about 8° southwest. The ore body is generally 4 to 8 feet thick but in a few places is as much as 20 feet thick it is being developed by a series of strike drifts and dip inclines, driven within the ore stratum on about 100-foot centers. "Documented underground fill failures have resulted because of the lack of adequate knowledge concerning fill strength and other physical parameters, as well as to a lack of consistent quality of fill materials being used by operators. On the basis of literature review and correspondence with backfill operators at 18 mines throughout the province of Ontario, non-systematic quality control procedures have been shown to exist, both within different levels of single operations and between separate mining operations, which act to provide inferior engineered fill materials and erratic application response in situ.Assessment of existing procedures set by mine operators for determining backfill physical parameters, and recommendation of optimum fill material testing and manufacturing guidelines are presented in this paper.A series of standard fill characterization test procedures are recommended to provide substantial, though not comprehensive, fill behaviour review. The purpose of these recommendations is to propose industry standards for backfill quality review. Data acquired could be utilized for fill design functions and as a means of comparing fill quality parameters between sites in a regular and more systematic fashion than is presently done."

Currently, recycling technologies use relatively homogeneous plastics because hand-sorting waste feed is too expensive. Many promising technologies for separating mixed thermoplastics are being investigated, but they are still uneconomical and unreliable. Burning plastics for recycling is not used because of poisonous gases released when their burning. PET and PVC cannot be separated using conventional gravity separation techniques because their specific gravities overlap; PET density changes from 1.33 g/cc to 1.37 g/cc and PVC density is between 1.32 g/cc and 1.37 g/cc. For this reason, plastic recycling needs new techniques. Among these techniques froth flotation, also used in mineral processing, can be useful for its cost and simplicity. In this method, a plastic is selected from mixture, tried to regain its natural property, hydrophobicity. In this study the experiments were applied by using plasticizer reagents to make the selected plastics hydrophobic and us-ing NaOH to render the other hydrophilic. Post-consumed PET and PVC are evaluated by concerning the effects of selected parameters (particle size, concentration of plasticizer reagent, amount of NaOH, conditioning time and the effect of conditioning temperature). At the end of the experiments, optimum parameters for selective flotation of PET from PVC was found as particle size of -4.76 + 3.36 mm, NaOH amount of 30 kg/t, conditioning temperature of 75°C, conditioning time of 30 minutes, reagent amount of 300 mg/L. Consequently, PET was re-covered with 99.7% purity and 57% efficiency.

1. The Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning beds are the most important beds in Clearfield County, Pa., from the standpoint of production. The Lower Kittanning bed has the largest remaining recoverable reserves of any of the beds in the county. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 1,909 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 1,177 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

"Kuala Lumpur Karst is a complex limestone formation that is characterized by presence of cavities, solution channels, pinnacles and floaters. Basement excavations in such geological formations are usually challenging, mainly owing to the unpredictable rock head depths and potential for groundwater inflow. Any excavation support system should have adequate robustness and water tightness. Traditionally, Secant Bored Pile walls (SBP) with struts are the preferred option for karst ground. This paper discusses a cost effective and innovative alternative solution for a particular site – using Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) and using Contiguous Bored Piles (CBP) together with Ground Anchors (GA). The site, located around one of the busiest areas of Kuala Lumpur, is a 5,700 m2 commercial and residential development. A 16.0 m deep excavation was needed for four levels of basement and excavation support along the 275 m perimeter of the development. Within the site, the depth to rock head varied from 6 m to 19 m. The basis for each solution and conditions for its suitability are discussed in detail. Some design considerations and construction challenges are also presented. The performance of the two retention systems during excavation are presented, together with comparisons versus design predictions. Suggestions for future development are also given. Advantages of this approach compared to other traditional approaches are highlighted.1. INTRODUCTIONThe geology of Kuala Lumpur is among the most complicated and geotechnically challenging formations in South East Asia. The majority of the city falls into the Kuala Lumpur Limestone formation; which is a thick, highly-weathered and cavernous limestone. This formation is pure calcitic to dolomitic in composition, having infrequent schist and phyllite interbedding (Gobbett et al., 1973).The KL limestone has a highly karstic topography dotted with cavities, ravines, interconnected subterranean channels, pinnacles, overhangs, floaters and slump zones (Tan, 2006). This results in erratic bedrock profiles even within short distances. It is not uncommon to see a precipitous rock head incidence within short distances in the same site. In most parts of the City, the bedrock is typically encountered ranging from very shallow depths to about 30.0 m. The exception to this is at the heart of the City, where Kenny Hill formation prevails above the KL limestone. In such cases the limestone bedrock can be encountered much deeper. The erratic rock head profile and the highly karstic nature of the KL limestone makes it a geotechnical challenge requiring careful consideration of suitable engineering solutions.1.1 – Site DescriptionThe site, located in downtown Kuala Lumpur, is abutted by a busy street on the North. Before development, the site previously served as a car park. To the west an access road separates the site from an empty lot; while on the east, the lot is bounded by light weight residential and commercial buildings. On the south side, the site is bordered by a road that separates it from a prominent Shopping Mall in the City. The Freeport McMoRan chlorination circuit is comprised of four related processes: ore chlorination, gas scrubbing, chlorine supply and excess hypochlorite removal ("hypo kill"). Each of these processes are described, and related to the pertinent mineralogic components in the carbonaceous ore feed to the plant. The chlorination system in use at Jerritt Canyon to passivate forms of preg-robbing organic carbon has proven to be a cost effective and efficient means to recover gold from low sulfide carbonaceous refractory ores, where gold may not be specifically associated with either the sulfides or the carbon.
