Nodular piles is to be piles provided with several nodular projections along the pile shaft, as shown in Fig. 1. Nodular piles are usually installed through either driving method with hammer or preboring method. This paper presents that the bearing capacity installed through each method is considerably higher than that of cylindrical pile without nodules. This paper also proposes the statistically analyzed unique formulae of the bearing capacity of nodular piles.

In November 1999, CCI's Empire Iron Mining Partnership and MinnovEX Technologies Inc. developed an expert system for advanced control of their Empire IV Grinding Section. Empire IV is comprised of three autogenous Primary Mills and six autogenous Pebble Mills, with a single Pebble Crusher and high pressure Roll Press. The challenges of controlling and optimizing three distinct grinding lines that are inter-woven by a pebble crushing circuit were met with innovative and unique solutions. This paper will detail the approach employed at Empire and will focus on the aspects that make this application unique.

Silicon Carbide is an excellent refractory material. Its physical properties make it extremely useful, particularly in applications where corrosion resistance and wear are important considerations. Commercial silicon carbide refractory is frequently manufactured by bonding silicon carbide particles with clay; however, clay may cause problems in the sintered products. This study investigates the potential of replacing a portion of the clay with andalusite powder. The results show that micron size andalusite powder can improve not only the strength of the refractory but also the sinterability. The mechanisms for these improvements are discussed.

Pipe umbrella support systems – also called canopy tube systems – have been used successfully for tunnelling in challenging ground conditions since the 1970s. Historically, the drilling unit was the limiting factor for pipe umbrella installations – less attention has been paid to pipe couplings and their influence on labour time and load-bearing capacity.This contribution investigates the influence of the type of pipe connection on the load bearing characteristics of a connected pipe and discusses associated influences on design calculations and installation performance. Standard thread connections reduce the effective cross-section and thereby load-bearing capacity in the connection area. To achieve design parameters, over-dimensioning of the un-weakened pipe section is the only way to overcome this limitation. Recently, two new, alternative connection types were designed and developed for connected pipe umbrella pipes. The first one is the nipple coupling, consisting of fitting with a threaded connection that is pressed and welded into the ends of standard tubes. The second type is the squeezed connection, which mechanically connects non-threaded pipe ends, achieved by force-fitted squeezing from the drill rig. Both coupling types have technical as well as operational advantages compared to the common thread couplings, which are the weakest point in the support system.In the following sections significant technical differences are explained, design values given and a site example presented to illustrate the operational advantages of the newly developed coupling?type.CITATION:Volkmann, G M, 2014. A computer program has been developed for use by the mining engineer for analyzing drum-type hoists prior to the modification of an existing system or the designing of a new one. Its use permits the preliminary evaluation of a system before seeking the technical assistance of mine hoist designers and manufacturers. Compatible with an IBM-PC, the user-friendly program accepts a variety of data and can analyze hoisting systems for any balance state. The extensive program can be used to: (1) calculate skip capacity to yield a desired production rate; (2) solve for required drum face width; (3) select a permissible wire rope from a menu of 50 available rope types: (4) estimate total horsepower of the hoist plant; and (5) estimate power cost. An example of the model's use in evaluating a hoisting system will conclude the paper.

MANY changes were made in the methods and equipment used in the mining of pebble phosphate rock in the generation immediately preceding the present World War and it would be extremely interesting to note the improvements that will be made during the next generation. Literally, much water has gone over the dam since the days when we used local cordwood for generating steam and drying pebble phosphate rock. belt-driven centrifugal pumps operated by steam engines. and floating dipper or centrifugal dredges; when we removed overburden by small steam shovels and transported it by dinkey locomotives and six-yard cars; when washing machinery was installed on wooden structures the washers being replaced every four to six years. Those were the days when men were plentiful, and 47 different mining companies were selling their products, based on .decidedly meager information; and. like so many mining operations, little thought was given to conservation. "The early mining of iron ore in Minnesota was carried on with the most primitive kind of tools. The pioneers used only such equipment as could be packed from Duluth through one hundred miles of forest to the first mines on the Vermilion Range and the operations were carried on with picks, shovels, hand drills and wheelbarrows, the ore being hoisted in buckets with a horse winch and carted in horse drawn wagons to the stockpile. This was about the extent of the mechanical equipment of the Minnesota iron mines in the early eighties.As soon as a railroad was pushed through from Two Harbors to the Vermilion Range the equipment began to be improved upon; wood burning steam boilers were installed and small steam puffers displaced the horse-winches, wheelbarrows were aban¬doned and small cars were introduced. Hauling the hoisted ore in wagons was discontinued and trestles were built so that the ore could be stockpiled more cheaply through the use of cars and high piles. These same stockpiles were loaded by hand into the 10 and 15 ton capacity railroad ore cars.Within a few years a marked change took place—the hand drill gave place to the air drill, such as No. 3 Rands, Ingersolls, Sargents and some Sullivans. Tramming was done by mules, the ore hoisted in. self-dumping skips, hoisting engines were intro¬duced and it seemed as though mining as a business in Minnesota had come to stay. At this stage someone conceived the idea of making the stockpile floor about three feet above the top of the ore cars to facilitate the hand loading of stockpile ore for trans¬portation. This was done through the use of wheelbarrows at first and later by using I-ton cars running on tracks laid on the stockpile floor."

The emergence of residuals management as a planning and management tool in the mineral industry has been recently accelerated by the proliferation of environmental regulation and its associated costs. Residuals management practices allow for the early determination and integration of both production and environmental goals in the development of management strategies to arrive at the most cost effective, environ- mentally sound solution. The term residuals management was in actuality derived from the substitution of the word residual for the term ?pollutant? or ?waste?. A residual can be defined as a non-product output having no value in existing markets or a value less than the cost of marketing it. The values of the residual can be determined by time, technology, government policy, market conditions, etc. Residuals basically fit into two classes -- materials which are composed of liquid, gaseous or solids; and, energy, which mainly consists of heat and noise. These residuals are interrelated and can be modified by adding materials and/ or energy, which also may become a residual; thus, lending themselves to alternate disposal schemes to control the adverse effects.

During galena flotation of Rosh Pinah milled material, metal ions and salts contents of various water resources (deionized, simulated circulated, lead concentrate thickener, lead tailing thickener and borehole) influenced mineral recoveries, upgrade ratios, selectivities, froth stability and flotation kinetics. The various water resources employed during galena flotation caused activation, depression or selectivity effects on minerals due to the presence of different ions in solution. Metal ions in these water resources were adsorbed by the ore, whilst ions associated with gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) were released into the flotation pulp. Lead concentrate thickener water caused depression of sphalerite and pyrite, increased fast floating fractions for silver, copper minerals, sphalerite and quartz (unwanted), and improved slow floating rate selectivity against pyrite and sphalerite. Lead tailing thickener water enhanced sphalerite recovery during galena flotation (unwanted), and increased fast floating fractions of pyrite. Western borehole water did not affect galena recovery, but sphalerite and pyrite recoveries were unacceptably too high. Ions from copper, lead, and zinc salts tended to release high amounts of ions, such as calcium, magnesium, silicon, and manganese from gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) during milling. During galena flotation, lead ions depressed sphalerite, pyrite and dolomite at a lead concentration of 400 ppm, but sphalerite was activated at a concentration of 800 ppm. Sphalerite was activated with copper ions (89% recovery, 2.09 upgrade ratio) and depressed with zinc ions (maximum recovery of 25%). This corresponds with findings in previous investigations. Dolomite and quartz were slightly activated with zinc ions. No evidence was found that lead and copper ions activated any gangue minerals during galena flotation. "In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. The charge transfer resistance remarkably decreased when Fe salts added to the 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution, owing to the ferric-ferrous redox reactions being the predominant reactions on sphalerite surface.INTRODUCTION Direct atmospheric leaching processes for sphalerite concentrates are performed by reduction of an oxidant (e.g. ferric ion and oxygen) and oxidation of sphalerite to zinc ions. The bioleaching of mineral sulfide pulps in a bench-scale rotating drum reactor has been studied. The reactor includes horizontal paddles in the inner wall for lifting of the mineral pulp. The performance of the reactor was tested in the bioleaching of a refractory pyritic gold concentrate in the presence of pure Thiobacillus ferrooxidans strain (ATCC 19859). The concentrate was efficiently bioleached at 50% pulp density with the drum operating at 0.5 -1.0 rpm Attempts of bioleaching the concentrate at the same pulp density in conventional stirred reactor showed severe inhibition of bacterial activity. The results demonstrated that the drum reactor allows to operate at much higher pulp densities than the conventional stirred tank reactor. This behavior is explained in terms of an improvement of the bacterial activity due to a better control of the attrition of the mineral particles.

The coupled simulation of mold filling and solidification for an investment casting process presents difficult. This is due to the complexity of the carious physical process and the geometry, To achieve this task in a precise way, the CFD program FLUENT and the casting simulation tool CASTS were closely coupled. Any physical quantity, such as velocities or temperatures, can be exchanged via files after each time step of the simulation. The communication and operating sequence of the programs is controlled by PERL-scripts. This enables the expertise of FLU ENT for flow simulation and the strength of CASTS, for casting simulation to be combined. The coupled simulation was successful applied to an aerospace investment casting. Several physical models were tested for correct treatment of the casting filters, the porosity of the mold and the viscosity of the liquid metal. The results demonstrate that even complex investment casting geometries can be investigated using CASTS-FLUENT.

For more than sixty years the rich oil shale formations of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming have been evaluated as a future source of petroleum. After many false starts the commercial production of shale oil is near. Union Oil and Colony (Exxon and Tosco) have begun construction of commercial plants. Occidental and Rio Blanco (Gulf and Standard of Indiana) are well along in the development of modified in situ (underground) processes. A number of other companies and groups are in advanced stages of development. This paper will review some of the major elements involved in the production of shale oil with emphasis on means available to express the efficiency of production of pyrolysis liquids and gases from oil shale rock.

For around ten years, electronic detonators are available for those who want to use advanced methods and to apply theories promoted by engineers and professors to reduce blast concerns or improve fragmentation and dilution. Furthermore, decision makers can verify the use of electronic detonators to drive down mining costs. Engineers and more specifically blasters are the actual users and have to be convinced of the easiness of electronic detonators. This paper deals with electronic detonators and the notion of easiness. Common feelings about the notion of easiness are discussed. Then, examples of new technologies like, automobile, photography or Information Technology are discussed to observe how they progressed throughout time with new features and sales volume. For the specific explosive initiation industry, each step of the life of an electronic detonator is dealt with concerning the easiness and a table is used to quantify this notion.

The reduction of iron ores by solid carbon, when both are agglomerated together in the form of pellets, has important kinetic advantages. Although several studies have been performed on the subject, some points on the controlling mechanisms need clarification. There is a big scatter in the values of the apparent activation energy reported in the literature, and this may be due to factors like heat transfer, flow of gases in the reduction system, pellet size and composition. This work is concerned with the effect of several parameters on the reaction rate. The parameters studied were temperature (in the range 1173 K to 1423 K), carbon type (coke or charcoal), pellet size, gas flow rate, catalyst action of the produced metallic iron and added sodium carbonate. It has been shown that the values of the apparent activation energy can change according to the reduction conditions employed, and hence any modeling effort will have to take account of these parameters. The Chatree Gold Project represents a greenfields discovery of metallurgically clean shallow gold mineralisation in a logistically simple terrain. Total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Resources are currently 31 tonnes of gold and 160 tonnes of silver. Gold occurs in an adularia-sericite epithermal system within quartz-calcite-adularia veins, breccias and stockworks. Host rocks are volcanic arc porphyritic latite-trachyte flows, their pyroclastic equivalents and volcaniclastics of upper Permian to upper Triassic age. The mineralisation was deposited in dilated zones during repeated reactivation of pre-existing structures. To-date five mineralised prospects have been defined by drilling with three reaching JORC Code Mineral Resources status. The project is in its definitive feasibility stage and is anticipated to be in construction during 2000.

"Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

Shotcrete is a practical and economical support system in many Canadian underground mines. Although shotcrete technology has gained acceptance in the mining industry, there are some problems that have emerged with respect to quality assessment and thickness measurement of the liner. This paper presents recent tests performed with miniature seismic reflection technology (MSR) developed and patented at McGill University primarily for thickness measurement of this heterogeneous liner. MSR is also capable of providing information regarding the quality of shotcrete in terms of its mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. Work was performed on site in an underground mine in Ontario, Canada. This paper also presents the results from laboratory tests performed on fiber-reinforced and non-reinforced shotcrete panels that were used to assess the P-wave velocity in both materials. The results of these tests were used in a second site investigation. The NDT thickness measurements showed good agreement with direct thickness measurement such as coring. In addition, the MSR technology has the advantage of being more accurate and more affordable compared to other non-destructive testing (NDT) systems in the market.
