The approximately 2800 Ma old Ventersdorp Contact Reef is a unique Witwatersrand orebody, from which about 6% of the world?s gold production is derived. A major portion of this production is mined at depths exceeding 2500 m and deepest levels of mining are at about 3600 m. The orebody?s hangingwall consists of volcanic rocks. This differs from the older Witwatersrand orebodies, which have quartzitic hangingwalls. The thickness of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef is generally about 1.20 m, but is highly variable, at an average dip of about 18°. A pronounced unconformity beneath this orebody is also expressed by varying footwall rock type characteristics and frequent rolling of the reef plane. These rolls follow topographic variations of the palaeo-surface. More geological than rock mechanics studies were performed on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef prior to 1992. Recently, however, a multidisciplinary team comprising various rock engineering and geological disciplines has delineated geotechnical areas by a novel technique. Geotechnical areas are defined by distinct footwall/hangingwall rock assemblages. The presence of three footwall and two hangingwall rock types results in the definition of six geotechnical areas across a distance exceeding 60 km, including about 10 gold mines. Distinct rock mass behaviour has been documented in three of the six geotechnically defined areas. Different rock mass behaviour is expressed by features such as mining-induced fracturing, closure rates, fall of ground characteristics and seismic character. Some geological features override the rock mass behaviour as defined for the individual geotechnical areas. These are undulations of the orebody or the frequency, characteristics and attitude of major discontinuities. It is concluded that the concept of geotechnically subdividing orebodies is not only important for facies delineation and the associated grade, but also needs to be considered for safety aspects, in determining factors such as the appropriate support to be employed.

Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problems in soft ground tunneling. During tunnel construction, the need to manually break and remove boulders as obstructions causes delays to the project. Repairs to a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can also be a source of delays. Managing these problems is difficult since normal soil investigation techniques do not accurately predict the presence or frequency of boulders. This has lead to considerable number of claims for extra costs and delays during the construction of soft ground tunneling projects. These issues are exacerbated in pressurized face tunneling systems where there is limited access to the TBM cutterhead for obstruction removal and/or cutterhead maintenance. The project team that built the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor (BWARI) Project for the City of Columbus successfully managed the design and construction of a 4,267 mm (14 ft) diameter soft ground tunnel with high boulder concentrations in a complex geologic setting. The management of the boulder issue tookplace during several phases of the project.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk either at concentrator commissioning, or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-Confidence Flotation Testing was developed for this purpose, and is part of the list of technologies of various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of practice and continuous improvement with this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to this method and complementary connections into sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Further work to improve the efficiency of this procedure has been identified.

Procedures for detecting and locating seismic sources are adapted to the case of entrapped miners. During an emergency the entrapped miner is likely to generate seismic signals, by knocking against the walls of the shaft. With a seismic array station deployed near the disaster area, the seismic signals can be recorded. Two algorithms are presented for the location of the source from the arrival times of a seismic phase: The first algorithm produces one, most probable location, under the assumption of constant velocity of propagation of seismic waves in the medium. The second algorithm is similarly applicable, however without any restriction on the seismic velocities in the medium between the source and the array. While the first algorithm uses an analytic approach, the second one is based on a trial and error procedure. The second algorithm gives locations with arbitrarily high accuracies, depending only on the accuracy of arrival time measurements and on the compatibility of the true velocity distribution and the assumed velocity model. The algorithm is shown not to require under certain conditions direct .arrival time measurements, thus eliminating a potential source of errors in the location of entrapped miner.

"The application of hydroxamic acid as flotation collectors is fast becoming of significant interest for the selective flotation of oxide minerals along with upgrading oxidised based metal ores and minerals. In the hydroxamate molecule, both O and N atoms in the -CONHOH group are identified as coordination atoms in many complexes and their characteristic structure determines the strength of the chelation complex between the hydroxamate and metal ion. The chelating performance of hydroxamates with transition metals including Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Cr, Mn and Co, the alkaline-earth metals (Be, Ca) and heavy metal (Pb) has been studied. Cytec has developed and patented a range of alkyl hydroxamates as flotation collectors for oxidised base metal sulphides, metal oxide minerals and precious metals. This paper introduces two new structures of hydroxamate collectors (Cyclohexyl and 4-tert-butylbenzoyl hydroxamates) and evaluates their characteristics relative to alkyl and benzoyl hydroxamates. Laboratory small-scale flotation tests were conducted with ilmenite and wolframite. The use of 4-tert-butyl benzoyl hydroxamate resulted in a best flotation performance for ilmenite. A relatively low cyclohexyl hydroxamate dosage was required in the flotation of wolframite to obtain comparable results to the alkyl and benzoyl hydroxamates. It is also shown a significantly improved flotation performance with 4-tertbutyl benzoyl hydroxamate in the flotation of ilmenite plant ore in comparison to the oleic acid or fatty acid collectors typically used for ilmenite flotation.INTRODUCTIONHydroxamic acid has been reported as an effective collector in small-scale flotation tests for a wide variety of oxide minerals and ores including copper (Lee et al., 1998, Lee et al., 2009), iron (Quast, 2000), tin (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002; Wu and Zhu, 2006), tungsten (Marinakis and Kelsall, 1987; Xia et al.,2004), and rare earth metal minerals (Ren et al., 1997; Pradip and Fuerstenau, 1991; Assis et al., 1996; Pavez et al., 1996; Zheng et al., 1996; Chen et al.,2005).As part of our previous research project, a selected suite of hydroxamic acid collectors including fatty, aromatic and modified hydroxamates (naphthoyl, cyclohexyl, benzoyl, octyl, 4-tert-butyl benzoyl, salicylic hydroxamates) were tested in order to examine their potential for recovery and selectivity of rare earth minerals. In these tests it was shown that the flotation performance with the hydroxamate collectors was significantly better than the phosphoric acid collectors on no slimes removed samples (Brian, et al., 2014; Liuyin, et al., 2014 and unpublished internal technical reports). Furthermore the tests revealed that for most of the hydroxamate reagents tested, their dosage requirements to achieve recoveries at the same levels was less than that for the phosphoric acid collectors. Recovery of both La and Ce was significantly better for the salicylic hydroxamate and that Nb, Y and Zr recovery were favoured by the octyl and benzoyl hydroxamates (Brian, et al., 2014; Liuyin, et al., 2014). Comparison among the hydroxamate collectors showed that the flotation and recovery performance of cyclohexyl (CHH) and 4-tert-butyl benzoyl (TBH) was not as good as the other hydroxamates for rare earth recovery."

A common type of deep foundation used in Norway to support bridge structures is the drilled pipe piles (piles) filled with concrete reinforcement after installation. The standard installation practice is the use of down-hole hammers. Complex geology and difficult subsoil conditions in Norway causes a high variability of soil and rock layers which in turn make for differences between actual subsurface conditions and those expected from geotechnical exploratory borings. This situation is strongly noted when the foundations are not fully socketed, and the rock layer is sloped. In this particular case, special testing procedures are required to assess the drilled pile base material and evaluate the rock-socket to ensure full contact between the foundation base and the rock surface. The local standard practice to verify the latter condition, consists of coring and visually evaluating the material recovered at the bottom of the drilled pile. This paper presents a case where the coring and visual inspection were not possible and alternatively the geological material encountered at the base of the deep foundations was evaluated using force-displacement measurements. Two 1016-mm (40in) diameter open-end drilled piles identified as P02-04 and P02-05 were tested and evaluated using in-situ force-displacement data prior to filling the piles with concrete. Test results showed an average displacement of 7mm (0.28in) corresponding to 35MPa (5.1ksi) stress level for P02-04, and 7.2mm (0.28in) corresponding to a stress level of 38MPa (5.5ksi). Based on testing results, both drilled piles were within the established material assessment criterion presented by the local authorities. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a case study in Norway where the material encountered at the base of an open- end drilled pipe pile (pile) was evaluated using force-displacement data. In the deep foundation industry in Norway, it is a common practice to install piles to support transportation structures. Once the piles reach the embedment elevation, and the pile base is assessed, these are filled with concrete. In projects where sloping rock is the supporting layer, and all nominal loads are supported by the pile base resistance, assessing the material encountered at the pile base to ensure full contact with the rock becomes critical. The local practice to make this assessment consists of the use of weighted tape, coring, or inspection cameras. However, similar to any other testing and evaluation methods, these come with their own limitations. The variability associated with the use of the weighted tape, accessibility for the coring equipment to complete a coring process, or the conditions at the foundation base such as murky water or thick drilling fluids could significantly impact the photo or video quality taken at the pile base. In such conditions, it is important to consider alternate testing methods to evaluate the material at the foundation base.

"Cobalt is regarded as technology enabling metal among the less abundant metals found in the earth crust. Electrodeposition of the metal from aqueous sulphate solutions is the preferred technology for its commercial production. Certain additives are added in the electrolytic bath during electrodeposition for the production of uniform, smooth and bright deposits of cobalt metal with higher current efficiencies and lower energy consumptions. A detailed investigation has been carried out to determine the effect of additive Sodium octyl sulphate (SOS) on the electrodeposition of cobalt. The results indicated that the additive apart from increasing the current efficiency enhanced the quality of cobalt electrodeposits. A maximum current efficiency of 98.4% was achieved at 10 mg/L SOS. The presence of SOS in the electrolytic bath did not result in any noticeable change in the crystal orientation of the cobalt electrodeposits except at higher concentrations (50 g/L) of the additive. Scanning electron micrographs indicate that smooth, compact and uniform deposits of cobalt were obtained at 10 mg/L of the additive beyond which there is detoriation in the quality of deposits. Polarisation of the cathode was seen in the presence of SOS. The effect of SOS on the electro kinetic parameters: Tafel slope (b), transfer coefficient (a) and exchange current density (I0) has also been investigated.INTRODUCTIONCobalt is recognised to be a strategic metal among the various base metals, owing to its numerous applications in various industries. Cobalt as a metal finds its use in the preparation of rechargeable batteries, as an alloying component in the manufacture of space craft and jet engines, as a drying agent for paint varnishes, ground coats for porcelain enamels and in the manufacture of the catalysts for the petroleum and chemical industries (Davis, 2000). Although there is a huge demand of the metal the supply of the metal is limited due to its scarcity in the earth crust. The metal comprises of only 0.02% of the earth’s crust for which the metal is recovered from various ores of nickel and copper as a byproduct (Hawkins, 1998). The present day techniques for cobalt production includes mostly hydrometallurgical methods which are preferred over the earlier used pryometallurgcial methods carried out for the metal production. Almost 70% of the world’s cobalt produced currently is from hydrometallurgical techniques in which electrodeposition of the metal from aqueous solutions is the final step for metal production (Verney, 1988). The most preferred route for electrodeposition of cobalt metal involves a sulphate medium (Das and Subbaiah, 1984; Lenthall and Bryson, 1997; Sharma et al., 2005)."

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE practice of carbonizing steel for the purpose of case-hardening has assumed great commercial importance within the past, 10 years. Formerly, case-hardened steel was held in more or less contempt, since it. was considered a cheap substitute for tool-steel. This is no longer the case. The development of the motor-car industry, and coincidentally that of modern alloy-steels, has resulted in overcoming many difficulties formerly experienced in case-hardening. This result has been accomplished by increased knowledge regarding the analysis of the steel which would respond most readily to case-hardening, and by more careful methods of treatment of the carbonized steel. The ordinary method of carbonizing consists in packing the steel with the carbonizing-material in cast-iron boxes and placing them in a furnace at a temperature of from 1,500° to 1,900° F. for a time sufficient to give the required depth of cc case." The steel is then either quenched directly from the box, or is allowed to cool without unpacking, and finally given a single hardening-heat., or, for special work, two or three heats. During the year 1911, more than 100,000 tons of carbonizing-material was sold in the United States, at an average price of probably $55 per ton. More than 85 per cent. of this material consisted of granulated bone. Within the past four years, many manufactured compounds have been placed on the market, consisting largely of some form of carbon or carbonaceous material, with or without the addition of chemicals. Steel will absorb carbon placed in contact with it at the temperature of the atmosphere. The reaction is exceedingly slow, but. increases rapidly with increasing temperature. Permeation rates for nitrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured in the temperature range 1800° to 2600°C at nitrogen pressure differentials of 1.0 and 0.1 atm. Gas chromatography was used to measure the quantities of nitrogen which permeated through 0.26-and 0.53-mm-thick membranes. Permeation rates were proportional to the difference between the square roots of the nitrogen pressure on each side of the membrane and inversely proportional to membrane thickness, indicating that atomic nitrogen was the difjusing species and that diffusion was the rate-limiting step of the process. Permeation coefficients calculated from the rates may be represented by the equation: where P is expressed in the units cu cm (stP)-mm per 1/2 sq cm-min-atm"' and 70.0 * 0.8 is the activation energy in kcal per mole of permeating species. In a previous paper' permeation rates were reported for hydrogen and for oxygen through tungsten. The permeation cells used for the hydrogen measurements were suitable for measuring nitrogen permeation under similar conditions, so the study was extended to include nitrogen. Permeation rates of nitrogen through the polycrys-talline arc-cast tungsten membranes were measured in the temperature range 1800" to 2600°C using two membrane thicknesses and two nitrogen pressure differentials. Permeation coefficients were calculated and the activation energy of the process determined. THEORY For diatomic gases which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at an elevated temperature where bulk diffusion is the rate-limiting step of the process is given by the equation: where: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, P = temperature-dependent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane, t = time, p1 = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, and d = thickness of membrane. When bulk diffusion is the rate-controlling step, and the solubility of the gas obeys Henry's law, a further relationship is that, for any given temperature and pressure, the permeation is the product of diffusivity and the amount in solution. The permeation coefficient, P, is temperature-dependent according to the equation: where: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, and T = absolute temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Cell Design and Experimental Apparatus. Two of the permeation cells used for the previous measurements of hydrogen permeation are shown in Fig. 1. Each consisted of a cylindrical chamber divided into two parts by a permeation membrane fabricated from high-purity (>99.9 pct W) wrought tungsten sheet made from vacuum arc-cast tungsten. The membrane in one cell was 0.26 mm thick and the other was 0.53 mm. The fabrication of these cells was described previously.' The permeation cells were mounted vertically in a high-temperature tungsten resistance furnace and the membranes and the center portions heated to test temperatures. Temperatures were measured by sighting an optical pyrometer on the edge of the membrane through a small hole in a tungsten plate which was fastened to the side of the cell. This arrangement provided an approximate black-body condition and eliminated the need for emittance corrections. Appropriate corrections were made for the quartz window through which the temperatures were measured. Argon gas flowed through the 10-liter volume of the furnace at the rate of 4.7 liters per min. The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions has been studied. The variables studied included temperature, stirring speed, and concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was found to be chemical reaction controlled with an apparent activation energy of about 2S.3 kJ/mol.

Published tables of jaw crusher capacities are compiled for the most part from field performance data, interspersed with interpolations, extrapolations, various safety factors, and other modifications. Such a table attempts to balance and equalize field data from widely Werent materials, with differences of crushability, efficiency of feeding, sizing of the feed, and so on. The tests described in this paper were undertaken with the objectives of checking previously reported capacities; of studying the effects of various factors upon the capacity, including jaw plate curvature; and, if possible, of deriving a general capacity equation. Such an equation has been derived from the data obtained in these tests. It is given together with factors for its use. While more accuracy than is usually required may be obtained by careful application of the equation, it is of simple form and provides a convenient reference plane upon which the potential capacity of various crushers may be compared, and with which operating adjustments may be made on existing installations. The principal deviation in these tests from the usual approach consists of a laboratory technique which has been developed for the production of selected capacity data. Recording instruments are connected to crushers in such a manner that a continuous record is produced which discloses the inherent maximum capacity of the crusher and shows capacity decreases caused by hangups. The capacity effects of various crushing conditions are made more evident by this arrangement. The recording instruments were first applied to a standard sized 10 by 7 in. Blake-type jaw crusher in the laboratory. Suficient tests were run on this with various combinations of setting, throw, speed, feed sizing, shapes of jaw plates, and other operating features, to establish the individual effect of each on the capacity. The instruments later were applied to much larger crushers in the field, through the excellent cooperation of the managements in the Mesabi Iron Range, and data were obtained which closely corroborated the established trends. The capacity equation resulting from the test work is made up of a series of factors, each representing the contributing effects of setting, speed, width of chamber, nip angle, feed density, type of jaw plates, stroke, and the overall operating technique. Fortunately, most of these factors were revealed to be in direct proportion to the capacity for straight plate chambers. This equation is also applicable to chambers using curved plates, with slight modifications resulting from the capacity limitation of the upper portion of the crushing chamber. The equation has been derived from tests covering a very wide range of feed density and hardness. It has been found valid, providing that the feed material is either nonpacking in character, as is usual, or allowance in designing the crushing chamber shape has been made to accommodate this characteristic. Preliminary investigation has shown that the equation is also applicable to single-toggle jaw crushers. Conditions of this are that the top of the flywheel rotate towards the top of the crusher opening, and that the horizontal motion of the swing jaw relative to the stationary jaw at the discharge opening be considered as the stroke. This report provides low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15° K. for magnesium metavanadate (MgV206) and magnesium pyrovanadate (Mg2V207). The work completes low-temperature measurements planned for alkaline-earth vanadates; an earlier report dealt with calcium vanadates.4 No similar data for these compounds have been published previously. Free energy of formation values at 298.15° K. were derived by combination of the present entropy values with heat of formation data. MATERIALS The materials used in the measurements were portions of the samples described in a previous Bureau of Mines publication by King, Koehler and Adami.5 Methods of preparation, chemical analyses, and X-ray examinations are covered in this paper. The indicated purity of the samples was 99.9 pct.

Briefly, the machine consists of a steel frame mounted on roller bearing wheels and axles, an electric motor, a fully enclosed speed reduction gear unit, a specially designed centrifugal pump driven through a friction clutch and silent chain, a mixture tank and agitators, and all necessary operating and control mechanism. The wheels are mounted on solid roller bearings made of special roller bearing steel, and are cast with deep chilled threads. The axles are of high carbon axle steel. A General Electric Company motor, of special design to exclude dirt and moisture, is used. It has an unusual overload capacity and a maximum torque at starting speed. Special arrangement can be also made for storage battery operation. The motor drives from one end, through a flexible coupling, to the speed reduction unit, and from the opposite end, through a similar coupling, to the pump clutch. The design of the flexible couplings is such that the drive is reversible. The speed reduction gears are enclosed in an oil and dust proof housing. All spur gears, as well as the main drive clutch, are made of steel forgings, with accurately cut teeth. An aluminum bronze worm wheel and special heat treated alloy steel worm provide the speed reduction for the traction drive. The worm shaft is mounted on Hyatt roller bearings and the thrust is taken in each direction by ball thrust bearings. The main drive shafts are of special alloy steel and operate in Hyatt roller bearings. The slow speed shafts run in extra large bronze bushings. Ample and constant lubrication is provided by splash from the gears running in oil. The Mudite pump is of special de- sign. A renewable wearing plate protects the pump casing from the natural wear of the mixture. The open runner is mounted on an extra large shaft which runs in a Hyatt roller bearing on the pump end and in Timken roller bearings on the outboard end. A special cage prevents water and grit from reaching the pump bearing. All thrust from the runner is taken on the Tim- ken bearings and these bearings also provide for the accurate and easy adjustment of the runner. The pump is driven by a silent chain, which operates on cut steel sprockets, from a friction clutch. The clutch is designed to secure long wearing qualities with minimum attention and its adjustment is easily effected. It is mounted on Hyatt roller bearings and the clutch drive shaft also runs in the same type of bearings. The pump discharges through a nozzle, which is adjustable, and controlled by the operator. The mixture tank is of approximately 650 gallons capacity. It is provided with a mixing well constructed of perforated plate screen to prevent large hard particles from getting into the valve or pump. The tank is filled through an opening in the top directly into the mixing well. On a shaft running longitudinally through the tank are arms so arranged that the mixture is thoroughly mixed and kept in continuous circulation from end to end. This shaft is driven from the speed reduction unit by a steel roller chain operating on cut sprockets. The traction drive is taken from the worm wheel shaft through steel roller chains of extra large size that run on cut steel split sprockets on both axles. An idler sprocket provides for easy chain adjustment. The axles are mounted in solid roller bearings in fully-enclosed dust proof housings, which support the frame through coil springs. These springs eliminate twisting strains on the frame on account of track irregularities and also relieve the working mechanism from road shocks. The speed reduction from the motor to the wheels is such that it gives an operating speed of approximately ninety to one hundred thirty feet per minute. The use of paste backfill in room-and-pillar coal mines in the United States needs to be fully investigated. This paper discusses a series of physical tests that were conducted to examine the support benefits of theoretical paste backfill regimens in Illinois Basin room-and-pillar coal mines, which necessarily included consideration of weak floor conditions. The series of tests included those simulating strong floor conditions, weak floor conditions, under-confined scenarios, and testing of actual coal-based paste backfill samples. The testing indicated that a paste backfill regimen utilizing a minimum backfill strength of 22 psi at a minimum fill height of 50% of pillar height could significantly increase the longterm stability of coal pillars in the Illinois Basin. Considering typical coal wash plant recoveries, 50% fill would be feasible.

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

Surface tension of mold flux is a key factor affecting optimum casting conditions. A thermodynamic model was developed to determine the surface tension of mold flux containing fluoride based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory of slag structure and Butler’s equation. The relationship between composition and surface tension was investigated by this model. Results indicated that the calculated values showed good agreement with literature data, and the average error was 8.19%. The surface tension value of the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux was larger than that of the CaO– SiO2-based mold flux. The surface tension in a multi-component system decreased with increasing contents of SiO2, CaF2, and Na2O, which are considered surface-active components. This trend was more significant in the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux.

"A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at the Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine.This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results. INTRODUCTIONStudy of the behaviour of an ore during concentration by flotation process starts, in general, with a series of tests in laboratory cells. Given the discontinuous nature of these tests, the information obtained by such a study is somewhat limited. It has long been recognized that laboratory test results are not always reproducible in pilot plant tests and subsequently, the pilot plant results do not always predict plant performance. The differences are often blamed on batch vs continuous operations, grinding media, size distribution, aging (oxidation), water quality, equipment, operator's skills, etc."

From Sept. 22-24, the Las Vegas Convention Center will be home to MinExpo 2008, the world?s largest mining equipment show that comes along once every four years. Sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), this year?s show is on pace to be the largest ever. Nearly 1,300 exhibitors have purchased nearly 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of booth space. At the center of it all will be some of the most impressive mining equipment that the industry has to offer. And in the shadows of the massive haul trucks, drill rigs and bulldozers, attendees will be able to see the latest and greatest products including hand tools; the latest in automation and robotics; safety and communications equipment; longwall mining equipment; engines and parts; materials handling and processing equipment and services; pollution control equipment; reclamation equipment and services; computer applications; consulting and financial services and more. While many companies will be on hand to display the tried and true, there will also be plenty of new things to see. ?We anticipate that a whole range of new products will be introduced at the show,? the NMA said of the show that has been called the world?s richest deposit of mining technology, services and products. The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works.
