TauTona Mine (the renamed Western Deep Levels East) is using a longwall mining method with stability pillars to extract the Carbon Leader Reef at a depth ranging from 2097 metres to 3456 metres below surface. Seismic activity and the complexity and hazards associated with negotiating geological features at great depth pose the most severe hazard to deep level gold mining in South Africa. It impacts negatively on safety and the profitability of the mining. The critical success factors in longwalling at depth are: ?Sound mining strategies and face shape control ?Ensuring follow behind development infrastructure is kept up to date ?Support system design as a strategy to effectively limit the serious effects of damaging seismicity. This paper describes the following: ?Implementation of the required mining strategies ?The evolution of a new stope support system and problems associated with its development and implementation. How this support system was adapted for the successful negotiation of major geological features with known seismic potential and problems encountered ?Current initiatives to optimize follow behind development infrastructure ?Current initiatives in designing a new gully support system and problems experienced with its development and implementation. Finally, this paper will deal with the way forward, briefly covering areas like the above-mentioned gully support system, the proposed phased introduction of technology, and the use of alternative mining layouts.

Hydrolytic stripping is the process in which metal ions are simultaneously stripped from a loaded cation-exchange solvent extractant and precipitated as oxides or hydroxides. Hydrolytic stripping is usually effected by contacting the loaded organic phase with water at elevated temperatures. The possibility of using hydrolytic stripping to prepare ceramic powders with controlled size and morphology is now being evaluated for different systems, using carboxylic acid extractants. As part of this work, mathematical models were developed to describe the kinetics of nucleation and growth of nickel ferrite particles. This paper describes the development of the models, along with estimation of key parameters appearing in the rate equations from experimental data.

Methane emission rates were studied in a Pittsburgh coalbed mine in northern West Virginia. A fullface boring-type continuous miner, equipped with a methane monitor, was used in the development of a set of eight main headings, one side of which was near old workings; the other side abutted virgin coal. Two air splits ventilated the section. Air volumes and methane percentages were recorded, and time studies of the miner were made during five consecutive operating days, during which a complete cycle of mining the headings and one line of related breakthroughs was accomplished. Methane emission rates increased significantly as mining progressed from the side near old mine workings toward the virgin area, and generally increased with coal extract ion. Mining in the heading immediately adjacent to virgin coal was interrupted quite frequently, owing to excessive methane concentrations at the face, despite adequate air volumes and acceptable methane concentrations in the immediate return airway.

The Rosita Hills contain rich, vein- and breccia pipe-hosted precious metal deposits. Volcanic activity occurred in two cycles - an early, mainly andesitic cone-building phase that terminated in the formation of a caldera and breccia pipes and a later phase characterised by trachytic lavas and dykes, rhyolite domes and lamprophyre dykes. Alteration consists of weak propylitic and argillic and, locally, intense advanced argillic, K-feldspar sericitic and silicic types. Marked trace-element depletions (Rb, Sr, Zn, Mn) are associated with K-feldspar-sericitic alteration and with advanced argillic alterations, whereas enrichments (Pb, Ag) are associated with K-feldspar-sericitic alteration. Gold distribution is highly localised and is controlled by breccia pipes and a caldera ring fault; it is not related to district scale alteration. In general, the geochemical and alteration patterns are complex, but they are clearly influenced by linear structures, the caldera ring fault and breccia pipes. Pipe-hosted Au-Ag and vein-hosted Ag mineralisation are associated, respectively, with early andesitic and late, post-caldera rhyolitic activity. The pipe-hosted and, especially, the vein-hosted mineralisation show affinities with adularia-sericite-type epithermal deposits

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines cooperated in a full-scale slope stability research project at the Kimbley Pit near Ely, Nevada. The west wall of the Kimbley Pit was mined from an over-all slope angle of 45° to an over-all slope angle of 57° and the pit was deepened nearly 50 feet. Mining was begun February 10, 1966, and completed October 30, 1966. Approximately 2.55 million tons of ore and waste were mined. The project was designed and carried out to learn more about the behavior of a pit wall as its slope angle is steepened and to obtain a possible insight into engineering parameters for use in design of future slopes. Data from this project are presented as obtained from (1) instruments installed in two adits for deformation and displacement measurements, (2) a subsidence network installed on the surface above the steepened wall, (3) pre- and post-mining observations of stress in rock, (4) sonic-velocity measurements, and (5) seismic and microseismic investigations. Changes occurred in measured quantities as the slope was steepened but stopped when mining was completed. Agreement was noted between the measured changes and predicted changes obtained from calculations using the finite element technique. Subsidence surveys and microseismic studies show the steepened pit wall to be stable.

The properties and deterioration in strength of cemented tailings backfill (CTB )in the underground acidic environment under oxidizing conditions were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy of the surface of the CTB was carried out, and the sulphuric acid corrosion mechanism elucidated. The properties tested included compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, internal friction angle, variation in the hydrogen ion concentration, and stress-strain relationship in different corrosion periods. The damage model of the CTB was established considering the effects of parameters such as corrosion time and strain on the damage evolution. It was found that the compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion (binder effect), and internal friction angle increased at first and then decreased with exposure time. In the long term, the peak stress decreased with corrosion time while the peak strain increased; elastic modulus, and deformation modulus also decreased. The damage caused by corrosion and by load were related by means of a mathematical model, which revealed the relationships between sulphuric attack, load, and damage to backfill in complex underground environments. During corrosion, the expansion of gypsum and ettringite caused microfractures in the CTB. With increasing corrosion time, micro-cracks developed and proliferated. The mechanism of corrosion damage was found to be the dissolution of hydrogen ions and a sulphate ion reaction that produces an expansive substance, resulting in deterioration of the strength of CTB.

The Caledon Outwash is a large deposit of glaciofluvial gravel and sand located 55 km north west of down town Toronto. For the most part it was laid down in a meltwater channel fronting the Paris Moraine about 14,000 years ago. Applying the braided bar model of Eynon and Walker (1974) the principal facies present are imbricated coarse gravels (bar corefacies); crudely stratified, imbricated bar top sandy gravels; and trough crossbedded side channel sands and gravelly sands. Of lesser importance are crossbedded bar front gravels, shallow braided stream facies gravels, and stoss side facies sands and pebbly sands (rare). Lithologically these deposits are characterized by FIGURE I. Geological relationships of Caledon Outwash. Industrial Minerals in Canada up to 95% Ordovician limestone and siltstone in the gravel fraction. A siltstone content of up to 34% requires that beneficiation be carried out for the production of better quality aggregates. Resources remaining are estimated to exceed 500 million tonnes in 3000 ha of the most suitable part of the deposit. Present production is about 4.5 million tonnes per year, shared by several producers.

We agree with the authors that it was unfortunate that more comprehensive data were not available when the paper was prepared, this being particularly true since we had no knowledge that the paper was being written and could not make available data which were in our process files. Further, it is our opinion that because the data are not sufficiently comprehensive the results which are presented are erratic and will lead to false conclusions. As we see it, there are three Specific reasons why the data which are presented cannot be considered accurate. 1. The preparation plant was not at equilibrium while the samples were being taken. This is indicated by the fact that the percent of solids in the circulating water varied from 3.9 pct to 10.7 pct during the period when the plant was sampled. 2. We do not believe that the samples of Bird feed which were taken were representative and could indicatc the true feed to the filter. Evidence of this is shown in the data where the dewatered product leaving the centrifuge contains more coarse material than the feed to it, that is, material which is +6-mesh in size. 3. We question if the data concerning screen analysis in the fine sizes is accurate and would conclude (from the data) that these tests were made by a dry-screen method. We have found that wet screening is always necessary to obtain a true picture of the quantity of —200-mesh fines which is present. The test work described in the Lyons-Richardson paper was conducted some time ago and the tests were carried on during a period when the preparation plant had not ironed out all of their start-up problems. Since that time most of these problems have been corrected and now this is a smooth running, well-operated prep-

Mountain tunnels are generally considered to be stable during earthquakes, however, it is known that the portal areas are prone to seismic damages. Characteristics in portals such as the location of the slope, modulus of ground deformation, and the change of overburden are different for each tunnel, and damage degrees are unclear. In this study, we reproduced the seismic behavior to investigate the effect on the tunnel portal by considering some parameters above, using simple static model tests and numerical analysis. As a result, the conditions of the slope condition and minimum distance from slope was confirmed to influence on the mechanical behavior of the tunnel portal during earthquakes.

THERE has been some discussion among blast-furnace operators regarding the relative merits of tuyeres of the converging type and tuyeres designed in an attempt to produce a diverging jet of air. An article1 on Progress in German Blast Furnace Practice indicates the interest in this subject abroad. This article illustrates a diverging type of tuyere which is shown here in Fig. 1A. The design appears to be rather poor as regards known properties of air flow. The adoption of this. tuyere, the article states, resulted in a decrease of blast pressure of about 4 lb. per sq. in. and an increase of the output of the furnace. If the improvements mentioned are due entirely to the change in tuyere design, the subject of tuyere design seemed worthy of investigation and this paper is a report of such work. Because of the gain in efficiency brought about by the use of a diverging tuyere in the German plant, it was thought desirable to investigate the shape of the air streams issuing from various-types of tuyeres to ascertain whether the gain was due to the tuyere itself or to the distribution of the air in the furnace. Since it is difficult to do experimental work on a full-sized furnace, or even on full-sized tuyeres, and because of the equipment available for the work, it was decided to carry out the work on scale models of tuyeres. Therefore, in this work, single tuyeres were used and the blast discharged into the atmosphere. The shape of the air stream was determined by means of a Pitot tube suitably supported in the air stream at various positions. The air was. furnished by a Roots blower driven by a 10-hp. direct-current motor having field control, and capable of discharging 250 cu. ft. per min. with a pressure on the discharge of 4 in. of mercury. A modern blast furnace with 21-ft. hearth requires about 50,000 cu. ft. per min. of free air at from 16 to 23 lb. per sq. in. pressure, depending upon the type of burden. This pressure is the total pressure required to force the air through the burden and through the tuyeres. Upon computation the pressure drop through the tuyeres is about 1 to 2 lb. per sq. in. A new integrated CFD-combined reactors approach is proposed for the description of processes in metallurgical vessels. CFD simulations were used to obtain the melt flow pattern in the vessels (ladle, tundish, and continuous caster mold). From these simulations, the characteristic curves were derived: (i) the residence time distribution curves (RTD) for flow-through systems (at tundish exit or at dendrite coherency surface in the mold) and (ii) the mixing curves for closed systems (ladle). In the next step, the melt flow was represented in a “combined reactors” system consisting of a combination of unit reactors (Plug Flow, Mixer, and Recirculated Volume). An inverse simulation was used to define the volumes of the reactor units and the melt flow rates between them by fitting to the characteristic curves from both methods (CFD and combined reactors). The suggested approach is demonstrated for multiple designs of Ar-stirred ladles, tundish, and SEN. This methodology can be used to enhance traditional post-processing CFD analysis and also as a tool for on-line process control.

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. There are several simulators available and are being used for analysis, improvement and optimal control of the grinding process. However, these tend to be developed on informal software engineering methodologies. The informal approach is not suitable for long term development and a formal design methodology is necessary to develop efficient, error-free, and easy-to-use and to maintain software. In meeting this goal, basic concepts of a software model for describing the mineral process objects has been proposed. The software model forms the basis for software design and efficient implementation of the simulation. This paper describes the development of software models for grinding circuits. The work constitutes the theoretical foundation for the development of an advanced simulator for comminution.

A conventional mechanical anchor bolt consists of a smooth bar threaded at the anchor end, with a conical wedge, and a mechanical shell anchor. When the smooth bar is torqued, the conical wedge pushes the shell anchor against the borehole wall. Coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the deformation and stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand how a mechanical anchor performs in a coal rib. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted the study described in this paper to define the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of a mechanical rib bolt. Based on the strength of the coal seam and the conditions of the coal mines, the bolts were installed at different amounts of torque. A typical tri-linear load-deformation response was obtained from these tests. It was found that the anchorage capacity depends on the coal strength, and the anchorage stiffness depends on the installation torque. The outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design. INTRODUCTION Rib falls are a serious hazard in underground coal mines. In the last 10 years, rib failures have resulted in 17 fatalities, representing 52% of the ground-fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States (MSHA, 2018). Although resin bolts has been used increasingly in the last few years to control coal ribs, mechanical bolting (mainly expansion-shell bolts) is still used in many underground coal mines. Recently, NIOSH researchers surveyed 90 sites in 14 underground coal mines in the Eastern United States and found that 79% of the mines determine their rib support requirement based on the depth, mining height, and the loading conditions, of which 35% use the conventional mechanical bolts. Conventional mechanical bolts are preferable for rib support because they do not require the miners to be too close to the rib during rib bolting. Hence, using the conventional mechanical rib bolts can reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities during the installation process. The mechanical bolt or the point-anchored bolt is the oldest type of rock bolt that is still in use today. The point-anchored bolt is a tensioned bolt anchored down the hole with a mechanical expansion shell or a grouted medium (Peng and Tang, 1984). Figure 1 shows the components of the mechanical anchor bolt. The mechanical anchor bolt consists of a plug, a shell anchor, a headed smooth bar with the top end threaded, a bearing plate, a hardened washer, and sometimes a friction-reducing washer. The shell anchor can be either standard or bail type. The shell of the standard type is held in place by a nut, while the bail anchor uses a strap to hold the shell in place (Peng, 2008). The diameter of the smooth bar is generally 5/8 in for the #5 bolt or 6/8 in for the #6 bolt. The diameter of the hole that the bolt is inserted into must be carefully controlled since an oversized hole can result in poor anchorage (Moss, 1971). The anchorage is obtained by applying torque to the bolt head, which in turn pulls the wedge down in the shell and expands the serrated leaves against the sides of the hole-wall. In the resin-grouted anchor, the resin replaces the mechanical expansion shell at the end of the hole. The anchorage is achieved by bonding between the resin, bolt, and the hole-wall.

High carbon, low phosphorus steel can now be made from pig iron containing 0.7 pct P or more, in a commercial sized open hearth furnace. No external heat is required for refining, and steel produced is identical with basic open hearth steel. THE classical Thomas process, which requires liquid pig iron containing over 11/2 pct P, yields a product relatively high in phosphorzs and nitrogen. Unless large quantities of recarburizers are added to the refined steel, the product is low in carbon content. Thus, the Thomas process is not well suited to American raw materials, and its product is often not acceptable according to the standards set by American industry. The shortcomings of the Thomas process have long been recognized; with the advent of low cost oxygen, studies were initiated to develop pneumatic processes which would conceivably overcome the inherent objections to Thomas steelmaking. Several such modified basic pneumatic processes have been tested experimentally in commercial trials during the past decade. Probably the most widely publicized of these developments has been the oxygen converter process as practiced in Austrial,2 and in Canada.8 n this process, oxygen is substituted for air and introduced above the liquid bath in order to increase the heat available to the metallurgical system. This avoids the need for high phosphorus raw materials and gives a product low in nitrogen. In this process, the phosphorus content in the final product depends, to a considerable extent, on the total amount of that element in the burden. The rotary furnace4 which is now in commercial operation at Domnarvet Steelworks, Sweden, is producing low phosphorus steel from iron containing 1.8 to 2 pct P. One or more early slags are removed and by this means high carbon steels of open hearth quality can be produced. At this stage of development there is some question as to the applicability of the rotary process to large heats. Another development has been the use of oxygen in combination with either steam6 or carbon dioxide yn the basic bessemer, thus avoiding the introduction of nitrogen gas into the refining system and giving a product relatively low in nitrogen content. A double slag process has been used in Europe7 in conjunction with a regular Thomas converter, by means of which it is possible to obtain a phosphorus content in the product approaching that obtained in basic open hearth steels. The Turbo-Hearth process:' which uses the side blowing principle so as to produce low nitrogen steel from normal American pig irons, has been developed experimentally in this country. A process fitted to U. S. raw materials All of the preceding processes, with the exception of the rotary furnace, suffer from the common shortcoming that they cannot be adapted to the production of high-carbon, low-phosphorus steels unless large proportions of recarburizers are added. In 1947, a program was initiated by the Inland Steel Company1' to study an oxygen steelmaking process specifically designed to utilize the full range of phosphorus analyses encountered in American pig irons and to give finai products with phosphorus and nitrogen contents comparable to steel produced by the basic open hearth process. The exploration process, like any other commercial activity, can only succeed if the objective of the exercise is clearly defined and persistently pursued. Successful exploration requires properties, funding, personnel and persistence. Many of us have years of experience in conducting exploration in our countries of residence.
