"It is not surprising that the most popular key takeaway from the Developing Diversity in Mining workshop (see box) held on the first day of the SME Arizona Conference in December was, “Have more parties!”The adage that mining professionals work hard and play hard was clearly demonstrated at the two-day conference in the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ. Nearly 550 participants, some of whom had left behind frigid temperatures and thick parkas in their hometowns, attended a full slate of technical sessions, shared industry experiences and knowledge, reconnected with buddies in the industry, and made strategic new contacts in the conference’s collegial environment, aided by the mild Arizona winter.To start off the technical sessions, John Mansanti, president and chief executive officer of Crystal Peak Minerals and 2017 SME president, entertained a packed lecture room with his keynote lecture on “Tariffs, Embargos, and Cartels ... Oh My! A Perspective on Potash.” Mansanti gave the audience the benefit of his more than 35 years of experience at companies including Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining Corp., Placer Dome, Freeport-McMoRan and Intrepid Potash, where he was senior vice president for operations, technology and strategy. At the luncheon, Justin Cross, general manager of Freeport-Mc- MoRan’s Bagdad operations, spoke on how the role of a leader in mining is transforming from one based on technical expertise to one based on the ability to collaborate, to lead and to adapt to changes in technologies and skill sets, in his talk on “Knowing When to Learn, When to Lead and When to Manage.”"

This paper focuses on the influence of pulp oxygen content on the separation of pentlandite and pyrrhotite contained in two different process streams in the Clarabelle Mill, operated by VALE INCO. The two process streams are (i) the scavenger cleaner feed, the product of regrinding the thickened, scavenged concentrate and the B cleaned tail produced from treating the non-magnetic fraction of the milled run of mine ore, and (ii) the magnetic concentrate which is the magnetic fraction of the milled run of mine ore. In the Clarabelle Mill, sulphite (SO32-) and TETA (triethylenete-tramine) are together used to selectively depress pyrrhotite from pentlandite. These depressants pre-ferentially decompose collector and/or sulphur enriched species at the pyrrhotite surface, an appar-ently essential mechanism in pyrrhotite depression from the scavenger cleaner feed stream. Selectivity in depression may originate from differences in the electrochemical rest potential of pyrrhotite and pentlandite. As both minerals are susceptible to oxidation, aeration in conditioning and flotation plays a key role in selective flotation. Base metal sulphide mineralisation on the northern end of Great Barrier Island is spatially associated with hypabyssal intermediate to acidic intrusives, in transgressive structures in indurated, complexly deformed greywackes and argillites. Copper predominates in the mineralisation, with minor accompanying lead and zinc and also some gold and silver. However, in some cases lead or zinc may be the dominant constituent. The mineralisation is generally characterised by only narrow envelopes of weak alteration (propyliticassemblages dominated by chlorite and epidote) and with only minor amounts of quartz accompanying the sulphides, which form a cement in zones of hydraulic fracturing. There are two distinct structural settings to the mineralisation: at MinerÆs Head, in a structurally complex situation in a shell-like zone of crackling in hornfelsed greywacke, in association with both north- and east-striking fractures and rubble breccias associated with the apical part of a large intrusive; and in very narrow, but very strike-persistent, 1inear steeply-dipping fracture zones, exposed on the north coast and inland areas near Tataweka.

The current status of the technology leaves many questions unanswered and hence the choice of the best system to employ is open to discussion. Reasons are given for the choice of the reactor system to be built and operated by Davy McKee. The pilot plant has been designed to provide answers to a number of the questions posed by this technology.

The impact of the computer revolution--so pervasive in some industries--has been less startling in the mining industry. Computer techniques have been used successfully to provide drill hole calculations, contour maps, and a variety of conventional maintenance scheduling, and accounting applications. But it is our experience that the real economic payoffs lie in the engineering application of computers to mine planning and the use of systems engineering techniques for mine operations. Since 1964, Newmont Mining Corporation has been engaged in systematic research and development of computer techniques in a variety of mine planning applications. The general objective in using computers has been twofold: first, to arrive at a viable, near-optimum plan for mining a particular orebody, and second, to decrease the financial investment by reducing the man-hours required for mine planning. Three major phases in the evolution of these computer techniques for mine planning are discernible. In phase one, the machine capability for duplicating manual drafting and contour mapping was developed. The necessity of including all recognized geologic characteristics is obvious. Capability for properly incorporating structure, stratigraphic trends, and other geological features was a significant aspect of phase one development.

The hot deformed microstructure of the 15Cr-15Ni-2.2Mo-Ti modified austenitic stainless steel (commonly known as alloy D9) was investigated employing electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Hot compression tests were conducted in a Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulator at temperatures of 1173K-1373K (in steps of 100K) with a strain rate of 10 and 100 s-1 to different strains. Various kinds of deformation patterns were observed inside the deformed grains. These were inferred as the development of geometrically necessary boundaries or formation of parallel set of micro-bands. Recrystallized grains were partitioned from the deformed grains employing grain orientation spread approach. Extent of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was found to be minimal at 1173K. DRX was predominantly found to happen at and above 1273K which increases with increase in strain. DRX nucleation and development mechanisms were discussed with respect to bulging of the parent grains and sub-grain rotation. Special emphasize is given on the role of annealing twins on DRX nucleation and subsequent expansion.

In simpler times, construction was a cooperative undertaking. The frontier tradition of barn-raising is the construction equivalent of the academic ideal of a single student seated on a log with Horace Greeley. In a more complex world, ideals become more elusive. Still, it was only a generation ago that toll revenue bond financed projects generally involved a team composed of investment bankers, engineers, and construction contractors, who all shared a common objective -- to create something useful, at minimum cost and in minimum time, with fair compensation to all involved. In an increasingly contentious public climate, the team has too frequently been splintered into separate camps of owners, engineers, and contractors, who have lost the old objective of creation and have, under the guidance and control of the lawyers, substituted two new primary objectives: 1. To protect one's own skin. 2. To detect and punish culpable negligence of one of the other parties. This process has become so ludicrous that a number of thoughtful observers from all of the camps (including even some lawyers) have come to recognize that there must be a better way to undertake construction works than to use them as wrestling arenas. The road to improved contracting methods starts with mutual understanding of each other's problems and viewpoints. To this end, discussions such as this RETC session make a useful contribution. To

LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4/C composite was prepared by an improved solid-state method and the effect of calcination temperature on properties of the obtained materials was investigated. The results showed that increasing calcination temperature from 600 to 700 oC improved the performance of the LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4/C due to enhanced crystallinity and increased conductivity, but further increase in calcination temperature to 800 oC led to degraded performance due to particle growth and decrease in porosity. Therefore, the LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4/C composite prepared at 700 oC exhibited the best electrochemical performance, and could deliver a high capacity of 152 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, 147 mAh g−1 at 1 C and 114 mAh g−1 at 10 C. In addition, the performance of the LiMn0.8Fe0.2PO4/C and LiMn0.8Fe0.19Mg0.01PO4/C was compared when they were obtained at the optimum calcination temperature.

The vapor pressures of FeCI2 and ZnC12 in the FeCl2-ZnCl2 system were measured by the transpiration method at 873K and 917K. The vapor pressure data were interpreted to indicate the formation of complex ions in the FeCl2-ZnCl2 melts. It is presumed that the complex molecule FeZnCl4 as well as FeCI2 and ZnCI2 exists in the vapors in equilibrium with molten FeCl2-ZnCl2 mixtures. The activities in the FeCl2-ZnCI2 system are shown a negative deviation from Raoult's law. These results suggest the formation of complex ions such as ZnCl42- in molten FeCI2-ZnCI2 mixtures.

The mining sector is a major economic driver for Canadian, and British Columbian communities. In parallel strong commitments have been made by industry to the well-being and sustainability of associated communities. However, these dimensions are the least understood. Especially lacking are focused regional investigations that compare the well-being and sustainability of communities dependent on different resources sectors. It is hypothesized that this type of comparative analysis will help to foster a greater understanding of what makes a resource or mining community healthy and sustainable. This paper describes research that examined community-level indicators associated with well-being (e.g. education, income and employment) and sustainability (e.g. economic diversity). The indicators were derived from Canadian Census data for 31 British Columbia resource-based communities (with a focus on mining) during a period of time (1991 to 2001) when resource sectors experienced an economic downturn. Our findings identify that during this decade, mining communities differed significantly from other resource-based communities, and comparative analysis of census derived indictors illuminate challenges that mining communities in British Columbia face with respect to wellbeing and sustainability (such as economic diversity, unemployment, and population loss). To contribute to the mining sector?s efforts towards meeting their commitments to communities, this paper concludes by proposing strategic opportunities aimed at the enhancement of mining community sustainability for policy-makers, communities, and the mining industry to consider.

Preliminary results are reported regarding the design and development of a pilot scale air sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal 590 pm (- 28 mesh) containing 24% ash and 1.6% sulfur. The principle of separation is the flotation of hydrophobic coal particles in the centnjugal field generated by the fluid flow in the air sparged hydrocyclone as discussed in another publication. This 152-mm (6-in.) hydrocyclone has a nominal capacity of 0.9 t/h (1 tph) and experimental results suggest that separations vastly superior to a water-only cyclone are possible. In addition the separation efficiency is as good, if not better, than that achieved with conventional flotation cells. For example, typical results indicate that 75% clean coal can be recovered at 15% ash leaving a tailing product of almost 50% ash. These experimental results coupled with the high capacity of the air sparged hydrocyclone (imagine a retention time for flotation of only two seconds compared to two minutes for conventional flotation) may represent a significant breakthrough, not only in coal preparation technology, but in the flotation of fine particles in general.

Making a tunnel through solid rock can sometimes be a dangerous task. Many things must be considered in order to complete such a task safely, and efficiently. Prior to starting things must be known such as, the type of rock, the purpose for the tunnel, the destination point, then angle of decent (or ascent). Once these things are known, the method to proceed must be considered. Factors such as cost, feasibility, and time to completion must be taken into account.

The recovery of lead, silver and gold from existing and potential zinc process residues using a sulfidization-flotation method was investigated on a laboratory scale. The following residues were tested: neutral leach residue, high acid leach residue, and hematite residues. The sulfidization of lead and silver is carried out at low pH by the addition of a stoichiometric amount of sulfide at a controlled rate. To increase the particle size of the sulfides, seeding with synthetic lead and silver sulfides -is employed. The flotation is carried out at pH 2-4 using low pH-collectors such as dithiophosphates and dithiophosphinates. Special attention must be paid to the role of oxygen in the conditioning stage. The effect of different parameters on both the sulfidization and the flotation has been evaluated. Recoveries of 85-90, 90-95 and about 80 % were obtained for lead, silver and gold, respectively. Typically, concentrates containing 50-60 % lead, 3-5 kg/t silver and 10-15 git gold were produced.

Results of impulsive wedge penetration tests on two synthetic, plastically deforming rocks are presented. Basic data obtained were force-time, displacement-time, and force-displacement curves for the impacts, plus the crater geometry. Wedge geometry and blow frequency were varied over a considerable range. The synthetic rocks consisted of wax-sand mixtures; two waxes of diflerent ductilities were used to provide variable "rock" characteristics. Conventional triaxial tests showed that these synthetic rocks exhibited force-deformation curves and Mohr envelopes quite similar to real rocks, except that strengths were much lower. Measured forces from static penetration tests agreed closely with theoretical values; however, dynamic force values were much higher than the static. These latter disparities are attributed to the viscous nature of the waxes. Thus the utility of these or similar rock models must depend on the scaling of rock viscosity, which is as yet unknown for impulsive loadings at elevated stress states. It appears, however, that some macroscopic, static phenomena may be studied with wax-sand rock models. INTRODUCTION The resistance of solid materials to indentation or perforation by projectiles or other penetrators has been studied by workers in many areas. Despite these efforts no universally accepted laws or formulas are available for describing experimental observations. In the metals field the force-deformation behavior of impacting bodies is often analyzed by the Hertz law for elastic collisions, the Meyer law if plastic deformations occur, or some combination of both.' The similarities of these expressions to empirical drilling formulas of the oil industry are apparent. Beginning with the basic contributions of Simon and co-workers at Battelle,' a number of experimental papers concerning the reaction of rocks to vertical impact have appeared in the U. S. mining and petroleum literature.'-' Most published data have, to date, been obtained at atmospheric pressure, although some early high pressure information was reported by Payne and Chippendale.8 Maurer" has recently utilized available brittle impact data to develop a drilling rate equation based on the experimentally observed proportionality between crater volume and blow energy. His result agreed with earlier efforts by both Somerton, who used dimensional analysis, and Outmans, who used plasticity theory. It has long been known that rocks exhibit different modes of failure depending on the state of stress. The literature in this area is considerable; however, papers by Bredthauer, Handin and Hager,13 nd Robinson", are adequate to illustrate the point. Since rocks flow plastically at certain triaxial stress conditions, the mathematical theory of plasticity has been used to analyze the rock drilling problem. Cheatham'" has altered the wedge identation solution of Randtl to rocks, and has developed useful equations for penetrator forces under a variety of conditions. Outmans" has utilized Hill's solution in a similar manner to develop a drilling rate equation. Both Cheatham and Outmans used the linear Mohr-Coulomb rule to relate rock strength and confining pressure. The actual stress at the hole bottom is not easily ascertained, although photoelastic studies by Galle and Wil-hoit," plus the analytical treatment of Cheatham and wilhoiti8 provide some insight. Consequently it is not clear to what extent the highly idealized rheological model of a perfectly plastic solid can be realistically applied to the rock drilling problem. This paper is the first report on a long range experimental study of crater formation in rocks at elevated stress states. The data presented here are from the first phase of the project. Data obtained from impulsive wedge impacts on two synthetic, plastically deforming rocks are presented. MODEL ROCKS Geologists have long been faced with modelling the behavior of the earth and, as a consequence, have studied scaling problems in some detail.' In general, their main problem is handling the wide disparity between laboratory and geologic time. In our studies the time effects (blow velocity or rate of loading, blow duration, etc.) were essentiafly the same for both. model and prototype, as were were geometry and tooth penetration. Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. In 2001, 14,623 mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This was an increase of 210 mining operations compared to 2000. Almost half (49%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone (29%), coal (15%), nonmetal mines (5%), and metal mines (2%).

RJB Mining is the largest coal producer in the UK. In January 1995 the Company acquired the Central North and Central South Regions of British Coal consisting of: ? 15 operating collieries -including capital equipment ? 2 care and maintenance mines ? 16 operating Opencast sites ? Interest in 26 prospective and 46 potential Opencast sites ? Approximately 417 million tonnes of proven and probable reserves and considerable mineral resource ? 9 million tonnes of coal stocks ? Long term contracts to supply approximately 90 million tonnes of coal to National Power and PowerGen to the period of 3 March 1998 ?Approximately 7,600 employees and 4,500 mining contractual labour. Up to the acquisition RJB Mining had the capacity to produce 14 million tonnes of saleable output with an approximate 1,500 strong workforce.

"Ethylene has been produced in aqueous solution from CO2 by the electrochemical reduction driven by a natural energy. This process is useful for storing a large amount of the natural energy. In the closed system, the conversion efficiency of CO2 is almost 100%, and the maximum selectivity for the formation of ethylene is more than 70%. On the other hand, the current efficiency for the competitive reduction of water is less than 10%. The electrolysis is practicable under such special conditions as three-phase interface consisting of gas, solution and metal, concentrated solution of potassium halide, low pH and copper or copper halide-confined metal electrode. These requirements are thoroughly examined, and the grounds to reply upon are revealed. A series of chemical apparatuses including an electrolytic cell in a large scale are designed for the ethylene production, which allow us continuously to supply raw CO2 and to extract the product.IntroductionIn connection with the depletion of the petroleum reserve, much attention has been paid to the utilization of natural energies such as sunlight, wind force and waves. However, these energies are always changeable, and some means of storing them are necessary for the common use. In general, natural energies are transformed to the electric energy at the time of utilization, but the electricity is not very storable. This is one of the reasons why the application of natural energy is not so expanded. On the other hand, the storing of natural energy by plants is very skilful. In the photosynthesis, solar energy is transformed to chemical energy by fixing carbon dioxide."

IN these days of special legislation for the benefit of various industries one might well consider one branch of human endeavor intimately associated with engineering-that of patents and patent litigation. It is estimated that 85 per cent of all industries in the United States are based directly or indirectly on patents. Most inventors are engineers, and most patent litigation pertains to the engineering industries. It is fitting, therefore, that engineers should be vitally interested in discussing patent affairs, particularly as inventors are not a professional group, and invention is mostly a transitory phase incident to the development of specific industrial problems.

At Waiuta near Reefton there is a remarkable vein of quartz <1 m thick which, apart from small offsets on late-stage faults, is a sheet like body essentially continuous down-dip and along-strike for> 1 km. The vein strikes NNE and dips steeply west (032/78¦W). From 1906-1951 the Blackwater mine produced 740,404 ounces of gold from the vein, called the æBirthday ReefÆ, which was one third of the total production from Reefton Goldfield and the fourth largest gold mine in New Zealand. Within the mine the vein is disrupted into a series of northeast-plunging shoots by late-stage faults. Similar faults, but with larger displacements, were thought in the past to truncate the vein at the northern and southern ends of the mine. The implication of this fault dissection model is that offset remnants of the vein await discovery. This study investigated the geometry of the vein and its relationship to host-rock structures and late-stage faults. A new model considers folding and lithological variation in the host-rocks to be fundamental in controlling the scale and geometry of veining, but does not rule out the possibility of some late-stage fault dissection. The Birthday Reef truncates 200-400 m wavelength folds in Greenland Group host-rocks at c.10¦ angle, that results in variation in the structural properties of host-rocks along strike every ~1350-2500 m. The spacing of fold hinges in the wall-rock veins is equivalent to the strike length of historic mining, implying that the Birthday Reef is probably hosted in a single limb of a fold. Similar relationships between mineralisation and host-rock folds appear to be present elsewhere in the Reefton Goldfield (e.g. Capleston and Murray Creek group of mines). Exploration targets are located one fold wavelength (c.1350-2500 m) further along strike from the Blackwater mine and relatively barren rock is expected in between the mine and target areas. Refining the location of folds and different host rock lithologies, using geophysical data and quality geological mapping, is the key to reducing exploration risks and discovering further resources.
