This paper concentrates on profits and other measures of return in the Canadian mining industry, especially in the non-mineral-fuels sector. The paper examines the historical patterns of mining profits, both before and after taxes, as compared with profits in other sectors of the Canadian economy, as well as some of the more important influences on mining profits. These include the prices of mineral products, provincial and federal tax policies with respect to mining , and the effect of inflation on mining profits and the financial position of mining firms - in each case, comparing mining with the other sectors of the economy. Finally, the paper provides an analysis of current and prospective rates of mining profits in relation to the capital required to ensure the future viability of the Canadian mining industry.

In attempts to correlate mechanical properties with microstructure, it is desirable to determine the effect of ß grain size. Determination of 6 grain size is not a problem where a has precipitated at ß grain boundaries. However, in alloys which have been processed to produce an equiaxed a +ß structure the ß grain size is difficult to determine because ß grain boundaries do not etch. The ß grain size can sometimes be laboriously determined by searching for grains which have some a! outlining the 6 grains. This difficulty of ß grain size determination in equiaxed a + ß alloys can be overcome by heating below the ß transus temperature for a short time and water quenching. Fig. 1 shows the starting equiaxed a + ß structure of the Ti-5.25A1-5.5V-0.9Fe-0.5Cu alloy used in this investigation, and Fig. 2 shows the microstructure of the same sample water-quenched after heating 1 min at 1675"F, which is 25°F below the 0 transus. "A cotton dust animal exposure system has been modified to incorporate a microcomputer feedback loop to monitor particle concentrations. The loop's major components are a minature real-time aerosol monitor (miniram) to estimate concentrations and a microcomputer to read the miniram's data and to control a stepper motor that adjusts the amount of dilutant air mixing with respirable cotton dust. Ninety minute trials of this system indicate that the standard deviation of particle concentrations is within 0.68 Mg/m3 of the average concentration, insuring a near constant concentration of respirable dust throughout the exposure.INTRODUCTION Previous workWeyel et al. (1984) have determined that respirable cotton dust can be shaken from bulk cotton samples using acoustical energy. The particle generator designed to utilize this fact operates like a commercially available sonic sifter, but on a much larger scale.While this generator successfully resuspended trapped respirable cotton dust, the generator output concentration decreased exponentially with time. This disadvantage was solved by Frazer et al. (1986) by operating the generator with a sinusoidal voltage near the minimum resonance frequency of the generator. This adjustment enabled the generator to produce respirable cotton dust for six hours or longer.Frazer et al. (1987) utilized the modified acoustical generator to produce a cotton dust animal exposure system. The cotton dust concentrations were estimated by a miniram, a light scattering aerosol Monitor. The system operator used the miniram values to adjust the system's parameters to maintain the desired concentration level.PurposeThe objective of this study was to introduce a computerized feedback loop to the operator controlled cotton dust animal exposure system. The miniram's estimates were analyzed by a microcomputer to determine what adjustments in the flow of dilutant air were necessary to maintain the desired cotton dust concentration. The Hidden Valley Gold Project is located in a remote and mountainous area of the Morobe Province approximately 30 km south of the township of Bulolo and approximately 90 km south-southwest of the provincial capital, Lae. The Hidden Valley deposit was discovered in 1984 with the nearby Hamata and Kaveroi deposits discovered in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Reserves (Harmony, 2009) at these three deposits are 42.1 million tonnes of ore containing approximately 2.9 million ounces of gold and 45 million ounces of silver. A further 5.4 million ounces of gold and 84 million ounces of silver are in the resources category. The process plant is designed to treat 4.2 million tonnes per year of gold/silver ore extracted by open cut mining methods. Ore is classified into three ore types according to oxidation state: oxide, transition and primary. The silver to gold grade ratio is high for the Hidden Valley and Kaveroi ores, generally in the range 15 - 20:1, and much lower for Hamata, typically 1 - 2:1: Primary ore is the dominant ore type at Hidden Valley with sulfur grades up to about two per cent sulfur. Oxide and transition ores are more prevalent at the Hamata deposit, but its primary ore has up to five per cent sulfur grades. Variable ore types, particularly in the initial years of operation, high silver to gold ratios and limited plant site area, due to the challenging terrain, present the main processing challenges for this project. This paper describes the operating strategies and process development for the main areas of this circuit, highlighting selections of processes and equipment that achieve cost effective, yet flexible solutions to the treatment of ores from these deposits.

The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles. This paper highlights the use of an innovative mine production scheduling scheme for grade-control planning tasks that take into consideration grade-model uncertainty. The scheduling exercise has been carried out with the help of a multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGa) for the production scheduling operations. The underlying motive behind the use of MOGa has been the generation of a set of pareto optimal solutions to meet the goals of the target-grade specifications for the considered multiple grade attributes. Several new concepts related to MOGa formulation, in particular the mutation operation and the convergence criteria of this algorithm, are proposed in this paper. The modeling of grade uncertainty into the scheduling outputs has also been incorporated through a set of conditional simulated grade maps. The proposed scheme of production scheduling operations has been applied for the grade-control planning operations in an iron ore mine to meet the targeted grade specifications of iron, silica and alumina, and a risk analysis has been performed to this end.

The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements. REEs are used widely in high-technology, clean-energy products as well as weapon systems. China's dominant position as a producer of over 95% of the world REEs output and the world's increasing reliance on REE products have highlighted concerns about the future availability of rare earths in recent years. This paper briefly reviews the REEs world reserves, production, consumption, the impact of our heavy reliance on REEs products and China's changing policies on REE export on world supply chain.

Rare earth elements (REEs) become increasingly significant for renewable energy devices and high-technology electronic products because of their large-scale popularity and applications. In this project, a field-emission scanning electron microscope was used to characterize the composition and distribution of REEs-bearing minerals. X-ray elemental maps were acquired with a large area x-ray detector (60 and 80 mm2 collecting area) and annular detector (60 mm2 collecting area), which allow fast x-ray acquisition at high count rate. These elemental maps were transformed into phase maps, which are used to identify the composition of the mineral phases and the REEs distribution over a large area. The phase maps are an easy way to distinguish the phases with and without REEs and compare the efficiency of different REEs extraction processes. Different methods (manual and automatic) for producing phase map were studied by comparing the distribution of REEs obtained from the same area.

THE investigation of domestic tales was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, at the request of the U. S. Army, on Dec. I, 1941: "Considerable concern has been expressed by the Supply Arms and Service over maintaining continued availability of supplies of the necessary raw materials. These ceramic products are used by the Signal Corps in all army radio equipment, and to a greater degree in the new ultra-high-frequency equipment. The Air Corps has become a user of large amounts of radio-grade ceramics for aircraft spark-plug covers required for high-altitude operations. In addition, the use of this material is essential to the proper functioning of the radio air-navigation aids of the Civil Aeronautics Board." HISTORY The use of steatite and talc in ceramic bodies goes back a great many years. If pure, tales shrink little under heat-treatment and are very resistant to heat shock. The massive form, commonly called "steatite" by the trade, cuts and works easily, and this was naturally the first method used in obtaining articles of talc. When gas was in general use for illuminating purposes, a large business was carried on in the manufacture of tips for gas burners.1 With the development of uses for electricity, low-tension insulators were made in a similar manner; and, in fact, the forming of shapes from massive talc continues. However, as the business increased, cuttings and waste became more and more of a problem. In the twenties, one of the larger producing firms had a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines at its Columbus station to work out a body using the finely powdered material. Somewhat earlier, manufacturers of spark plugs used the finely ground talc as part of the body and to some extent in wall-tile bodies. Somewhat later it came into use for kiln furniture and similar products and still more recently it has been used in some dinnerwares. With the development of the radio and the high-frequency fields generated, it was found that a dense steatite porcelain was far better than even high-tension electrical porcelain, which is a clay-flint-feldspathic type of body. Until the war increased the demand, the several pioneer steatite-porcelain manufacturers were able to furnish adequate supplies. When war began in Europe and Asia, three important foreign sources of raw material were cut off; i.e., the French, Italian, and Manchurian tales. Introduction The impact of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and their state counterparts underscore the intention of the nation's lawmakers to reduce the risk from hazardous substance to American society. The promises and requirements embodied in these laws, together with their prospects for liability, will continue to have a very substantial impact on decision making in the mining industry. These laws present the prospects for staggering liabilities, often of an unquantifiable nature in terms of time and amount. It is therefore necessary to keep them in clear focus. This is particularly true in light of President Reagan's signing into law the Superfund amendments on Oct. 17, 1986, and in light of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) major policy pronouncement of July 3, 1986, regarding solid wastes from extraction of ores and minerals. This article examines the general trends as well as the specific provisions of these laws in an effort to assess the prospects of liability for the mining industry of releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Hazardous substances vs. hazardous wastes The distinction between the terms "hazardous substances" and "hazardous wastes" is important to appreciate for the purposes of assessing the potential for liability for a mining operation. Hazardous substance is a term that appears in and is defined in the Superfund Act. In Superfund, it is defined by reference to other substances that have been declared to be hazardous under other federal environmental statutes, such as RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. Hazardous waste is a term that is less all-encompassing than hazardous substance, as that term is defined by RCRA. Hazardous substances do not need to be wastes to be considered hazardous for the purpose of Superfund liability. A "release" of a hazardous substance into the environment can bring about potential liability under Superfund. Many mining wastes, even though they are not considered hazardous wastes by EPA under RCRA, have been determined by that agency to be capable of bringing about liability under Superfund if they contain chemical substances, such as the heavy metals copper, lead, mercury, zinc, silver, and others. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the mining industry to be able to answer whether one has hazardous waste at a mining site. That question only goes partway in addressing the potential for liability. The next question is, do one's solid or liquid mining wastes contain hazardous substances that could bring about liability under Superfund? Superfund 1980 law: A review Some provisions of Superfund as it existed before its recent amendments must be considered. The law provides that the owners and operators of mining sites, together with those who transport hazardous substances to such sites, can be held jointly and severally liable for the cost of cleaning up the site. The concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of cleanup. One of the most common critical areas of longwall mining in terms of ground stability are the gateroad and bleeder entries. These critical entries provide much-needed safe access for miners and allow for adequate ventilation required for dilution of hazardous airborne contaminants and must remain open during mining of a multi-panel district. This paper focuses on the stability of the longwall entries subjected to a single abutment load such as bleeders, first tailgate, and last headgate. First tailgate and last headgate are also referred to as blind headgates and tailgates. A study of a longwall district through conditions mapping, support evaluations, and numerical modeling was conducted and evaluated by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The condition mapping and support evaluations were performed on entries that spanned the previous five years of mining and relied on a diverse selection of supports to maintain the functionality of the entry. Numerical modeling was also conducted to evaluate various support types with further investigation and comparison to the condition mapping. The study demonstrated the importance of the abutment load decay versus distance from the gob edge, the potential for a reduction in material handling related injuries, as well as optimal usage of secondary and standing support.

In 2007, the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) temporarily expanded its seismic monitoring network in Emery County, Utah, in response to the August 6 Crandall Canyon mine collapse that trapped six workers. In spite of this additional coverage, no seismic events were located in the area during a six-day period (gap) from August 8 to August 13. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) ?Command Center Log Books? however, contain references to 16 instances of underground ?bumping? and ?bouncing? that occurred during the gap. When ground truth information provided by the log books is compared to the raw seismic data recorded by the UUSS network, the correlation offers insight into the chronology of mininginduced seismicity (MIS) in the aftermath of the collapse. The new research focuses on identifying and locating seismic events that occurred during the six-day gap using double-difference relocation techniques and correlating them with log book ground truth. Ten seismic events were identified in the vicinity of the mine during the six-day gap, ranging in magnitude from coda magnitude (MC) 0.5 to 1.4. Three of these events were amenable to location by double-difference techniques. The location of one of these events is directly confirmed by ground truth information from the log books. As a result of this new research, the accuracy of Crandall Canyon double-difference locations has been improved, and the number of events correlated with ground truth information has increased. The seismic events occurring in and around the collapsed area appear in two distinct sections of the mine?east and west of the center of collapse. It was originally reported that the post-collapse events occurred in episodic clusters. The first two episodes occurred to the east, followed in time by a cluster on the west, and then by a third episode on the east. With the addition of new events to the data set, this pattern is no longer as clear, although the events still occur in clusters. Only one MIS cluster was found to occur within the bounds of the minimum estimated collapse area (Pechmann et al., 2008).

This report summarizes part of the work performed under the USBM Contract No. H0155113, "Noise Abatement of Continuous Mining Machines." It reviews, briefly, the aboveground tests performed on a Jeffrey 120M conveyor that were documented in Vol. I of the subject contract; and describes the performance of treatments implemented on underground equipment. The noise level at the operator's position in the aboveground-test facility was reduced from 101.5 to 91 dBA using treatments with satisfactory - aboveground - durability. Extensive underground evaluation has been performed only on the constrained layer damping, which has reduced the conveyor noise by 2 to 6 dBA depending on the operating conditions, and has been shown to be sufficiently durable. Other promising candidates for exploratory evaluation include resilient layers for the top/bottom decks, and smoother discontinuities between adjacent conveyor sections.

Since 1976 CVRD is carrying out tests to develop a type of pellet made with organic binder. One binder that showed good possibility to be used in industrial plants is Peridur. An extensive framework of tests was run in CVRD's pilot plant. The results are presented in this paper. Finally, the decision was taken to carry out an industrial production of 50.000 t of pellets. It was scheduled for March '81. The results are shown in this pager. It was not observed any detrimental effect of the peridur neither in the process nor in the product quality.

SYNOPSIS A description is given of a new computer programme that has been developed for the rapid computation of the changes in temperature and humidity of air passing through mine airways. The programme enables the ventilation engineer to calculate air temperature increases along airways with an ease that is comparable with that of looking up a set of graphs or tables in an engineering hand-book. The pertinent information for a particular airway can be fed to the computer either on a standard punched card, or by typing directly into the computer at a remote terminal teletype unit.

This report details the continuation of mine power systems transient research under USBM Grant G0155003. The purpose of the work, which commenced under Grant G0133077, is the elimination of safety hazards created by transients" and the objective is to provide knowledge about transients existing in a-c and d-c coal mine power systems. The report chapters cover theoretical background, instrumentation, and experimental investigations. The instrumentation discussion scans measurement problems and considerations plus the development of a low-cast peak-detector. Transient data from in-mine measurements are presented and include high-voltage distribution and d-c trolley systems. Extremely unique field exercises are described involving actual power equipment connected on the surface to duplicate typical underground coal mine system arrangements. Here, transients on high-voltage distribution resulting from vacuum circuit breaker operations could be observed under controlled conditions, and work centered around how surge capacitors effect transients. Using the in-mine and staged transient data, specific conclusions and recommendations are made with emphasis on high-voltage distribution.

A U.S. Bureau of Mines designed and fabricated in-seam tester (1ST), retrofitted with a dust shroud, was used to establish a respirable dust index (RDI) and to determine cutting forces from a variety of bit types in four coal mines and a salt mine. Results from cutting tests at four coal mines showed that radial bits required the lowest cutting force and the least specific energy. Generally, for each conical bit the RDI and cutting force increased when the included bit tip angles increased from 70° to 90°. During field tests it was not possible to measure the total quantity of respirable dust produced by each cut; therefore, attempts were made to determine the amount of dust that became airborne from each test cut. The test results show that the quantity of airborne respirable dust is very erratic and cannot be related to bit type. Two statistical methods were employed to analyze RDI, but no correlation was found between the RDI and bit type. Despite scatter in test results for RDI, significant difference was found in RDI generated in four coal seams. In general, RDI increased with the increased cutting force for each coal seam from mine 1 through mine 4.
