"Conventional wisdom is that gold not assayable is not recoverable or does not exist. There has been no formal study on the possibility that gold assays using advanced spectroscopy such as mass spectrometry and neutron activation could grossly underestimate the gold recoverable by proprietary extraction techniques. Such gold is not considered here to be æinvisibleÆ to detection but rather æabnormalÆ or ædistortedÆ at atomic level. Large-scale extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores has not been demonstrated, hence this emerging field still lacks credibility and acceptance. For fear of harming their reputation, few academic researchers or companies are expected to venture into this field until it is well proven. This paper aims to create awareness amongst metallurgists of the potential of æabnormalÆ gold ores by reviewing unconventional observations, the pseudoscience mainly available in non-peer reviewed web sites, and hypotheses for the recovery of ænon-assayableÆ gold, including: the occurrence of high levels of nano-sized gold in clays detectable by high-precision analytical instruments, which represents æinvisibleÆ gold accounts of ambient transmutation of elements, mainly using thermal methods orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements (ORMEs), which are virtually undetectable by conventional means, and their conversion to normal metals the possibility of a æhigh spinÆ state of transition metals the formation of microclusters altering the chemical behaviour of gold and the possibility of clustering with other elements. It is suggested here that gold in ores displays a range of clustering, from ænormalÆ gold amenable to conventional extraction to the ORME state. The concepts of æintermolecular waterÆ in forming complex salts locking up precious metals, electro-dissolution in strong acids, and electrowinning at both the anode and cathode are discussed as a means of treating æabnormalÆ gold ores. It is also possible that the gas phase extraction of gold chlorides under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, as well as transferred-arc plasma fuming of gold through carbothermic reduction of sulfides, could be used as a basis for extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores.CITATION:van Deventer, J S J, 2013. This paper describes how Brisbane-based PanAust Limited develops process control strategies that are implemented at all operations and are used in functional descriptions for plant upgrades and new projects.The process control strategies are determined by operating management philosophies designed to maximise returns from the company’s assets.The approach is endorsed in the project planning and design phases to ensure facilities and equipment that form the major production assets are fit for purpose and capable of enabling the production managers and operators of the projects to maximise shareholder returns.PanAust’s process control approach has been to develop sets of process control standards which focus on two key areas. The first area covers hardware requirements and architecture, software objectives, control models and individual loop tuning methods. The second area defines control room layout, graphic standards and the alarm philosophy. The application of these standards in a new plant or upgrade decreases the time required to achieve design capacity and optimal performance.The PanAust process control strategy changes the operator’s role from one that controls a number of individual loops to one that sets the control objectives of the processing plant. To achieve optimal performance, all the process areas of the plant are analysed to identify opportunities to improve throughput, recovery and stability. Once a key opportunity is identified, a process control strategy is developed which defines the objective of the control, its functionality and how an operator will interact with it. After development of the control model the operators assist engineers to test and debug it. UINQUESTIONABLY the petroleum industry not only can supply the world's present oil requirements but even can meet a considerable increase in demand if it should come. The United States produced last year 1 1/3 billion barrels of crude oil, or more than 60 per cent of the world's total. It could have provided more, if needed, because we has a large shut-in crude producing capacity. Our refining capacity of 4,500,000 0 barrels per day is more than 2 per cent above our average refinery run for 1940. Adequate crude supplies and manufacturing facilities also exist outside of the United States. Large crude reserves exist in South America, in Iran and Iraq, in Russia and Romania, in Sumatra and adjacent islands. The refineries of the Dutch West Indies, of Iran, and of the Netherland East Indies are well located in relation to crude reserves and world trade lanes. Furthermore, flexibility in the manufacturing facilities permits adjustment of yields to meet a considerable range in variations between demands for products. Only with regard to 100-octane aviation gasoline is there any apparent refinery problem. Even here so far as this country is concerned, additional refining facilities can be installed well within the time that would be required to turn out the airplane engines which will use this super fuel.

"Amongst the mineral products of Canada gold holds the second place in value of yearly output. . . . . .The production of gold has increased steadily during the past six years and has somewhat more than doubled in that time. For the past four years Canada has been third among the gold producing countries of the world, surpassed only by the Union of South Africa, and the United States of America," and now yields somewhat more than 9 per cent of the annual output of the world."-"The Gold Situation in Canada". Bulletin of Development Branch, Canadian Pacific Railway. The history of gold mining in Canada is comparatively modern and does not take one further back than the late 'fifties of the 19th century. If the efforts of the early explorers in Canada were expended in "seeking with equal ardour, proselytes and gold", history fails of any record of their success in the search for the precious metal. As early as 1849 not a few Canadians travelled from the east by land and water to the Californian goldfields. In the then settled part of Canadathe east-people were alive to the value of any mineral discovery; but the west, owing to its remoteness and to there being no ready means of communication, was virtually isolated from the east.

This circular is one of a series of reports on coal mining methods and cost s which are being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for the purpose of making available to those interested in the industry a knowledge of the mining methods employed in mines where mechanical and hand loading is practiced and the cost data on the several operations pertaining to the removal of coal from the working faces and its transportation to the tipple for loading into railroad cars. The methods employed are influenced by the natural local conditions with respect to the thickness and character of the coal beds and the overlying strata, the means employed for roof support and its control, and the disadvantages incident to the development of mines in thin coal beds.

Large tonnages of the magnesium silicate mineral , olivine, are known to exist in the mountains of western North Carolina and in the Puget Sound region of Washington. The North Carolina deposits alone are reputed to contain at least 230 million tons of ore averaging 45 to 49 percent of magnesium oxide In both areas the mineral is readily accessible and can be mined by the simplest methods ; one of the largest of the Washington deposits is located at tidewater .

Tomago Aluminium, a 400,OO tonnes per annum primary aluminium smelter in Australia, has installed Ozone for biological control of its process water. The system was designed in Australia by Ionics Watertec Engineering, whilst ANCO Australia monitors the water quality and provides technical support for the project. The motivation was initially to reduce operating costs, however investigations indicated that there were substantial environmental benefits to be achieved by the elimination of a part, or all of, the chemicals being used to control the system. Also the existing chemicals appeared to be losing their ability to control biological growth in the system, in particular, the legionella bacteria. Ozone water treatment commenced in January 1998 and after a short transition period has operated without chemical addition since. There appears to be no doubt that the biological control is effective, the clarity and purity of the water has improved and initial testing indicates that the corrosion control rate is acceptable, although some chemical corrosion control may be introduced after further testing around the total circuit to guarantee protection

The domestic mineral and material industry grew in some key sectors and declined in others during 1993; overall, the industry was poised at yearend for stronger growth in 1994. Metals production is expected to increase with anticipated growth in U.S. motor vehicle sales. There also may be increased demand for industrial minerals in 1994 based on domestic highway and building construction. Additional information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material industry is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Industry Performance The value of processed materials produced from minerals in the United States during 1993 is estimated to have been about $326 billion, an increase of 5% compared with that of 1992. The estimated value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1993 was $31.6 billion, about 1 % less than in the preceding year. The value of domestic minerals production has risen in 28 of the last 33 years.

"Abstract-Diesel emission particles (DEP) from an engine operating on the Federal Test Procedure VDC were dispersed in an aqueous mixture of dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL). a major component of pulmonary surfactant and saline and were tested for genotoxicity using the unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) assay with autoradiography techniques in cultured Chinese hamster lung cells. A DEP sample from the same source was dispersed in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and subjected to the same assay. Both dispersions (in DPL and DMSO) were found to induce UDS in a dose-related manner. After separation of the sample into supernatant and sediment fractions. the activity of the DEP sample was found to reside in the supernatant fraction for the DMSO-dispersed sample; and in the sedimentary fraction for the surfactant-dispersed sample. These findings further indicate that genotoxic activity associated with DEP inhaled into the lung may become bioavailable through the dispersion properties of pulmonary surfactant components.INTRODUCTIONTHE mutagenicity of diesel emission particles (DEP) has been studied intensively (LEWTAS and WILLIAMS, 1986). Carcinogenic effects of diesel exhaust in exposed animals have been reviewed (NIOSH, 1988) and an evaluation of carcinogenic risks to humans from diesel engine exhausts has been published (IARC, 1989). Using components of pulmonary surfactant such as dipalmitoyl lecithin (D PL), dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) or dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) dispersed in physiological saline, we have previously shown that diesel soots express mutagenic activities in the Salmonella histidine reversion assay system and in the sister chromatid exchange assay using the cultured Chinese hamster lung (V79) cells. Mutagenic activity of diesel soots dispersed in DPL, DPPE and DPPA was quantitatively comparable to and in some cases greater than, the activity expressed by an equal mass of soot extracted by dichloromethane-dimethyl sulphoxide (DCM-DMSO) (WALLACE et al., 1989).Unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) is accepted and frequently included, as one of the tests in the battery of assays used to assess carcinogenic-mutagenic potential -of chemicals (MITCHELL et al., 1983). In this study, induction of UDS in V79 cells by DEP, dispersed in the major component of pulmonary surfactant DPL, was carried out. The purpose of this study is to validate the suggestion generated from our previous work that mutagens associated with inhaled particles may be dispersed or solubilized in the phospholipid component of pulmonary surfactant and become active in such a phase (WALLACE er al., 1989) and to test the fractionated DEP sample using UDS assay for a more complete evaluation of its genotoxicity."

A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on pressure oxidation pre-treatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pre-treatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperature. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

The Flin Flon mine is at present hoisting 5,000 tons of ore daily. In 1943, a peak production of 6,188 tons daily was maintained. Before discussing secondary blasting, it is felt that a short review of stoping procedure will be of value. A list of papers dealing with various phases of the mining operation is appended. Stoping Practice Stopes vary in width from 30 to 150 feet, in length from 200 to 450 feet, and in height from 200 to 500 feet. A typical stope would be 300 feet long, 300 feet high, and 90 feet wide. The dip of the orebodies varies from 60° to vertical, with an average of 82°. The ore is heavy, having a specific gravity of 4. Both sub-level benching and radial drilling are practised. Blast-hole diamond drills are responsible for 85 per cent of the total production. Two sizes of hole are drilled at present, 11 7 6 -inch and 1%-inch. For bench drilling, the burden on the 1 7/16-inch hole is six feet, with holes on 8-foot staggered centres; in radial drilling, the burden is six feet, with nine feet between the toes. The burden on the l 5/8-inch hole is eight feet with holes on 11-foot centres, or 13 feet on the toe of fanned holes. Holes are blasted with two No. 8 instantaneous electric caps per hole, using 403 Polar Forcite. A powder charge of 0.15 pounds per ton is used, with a tonnage factor of 5 and 6.4 per foot drilled for the two sizes. Two rows of holes are blasted together. Fragmentation is satisfactory with the above drilling pattern and powder charge. However, some overbreak and fall-off locally results in oversize material. It is estimated that, after primary breaking, 75 per cent of the ore will pass through the grizzly openings and 15 per cent will pass the draw points, leaving 10 per cent that must be broken further to pass the draw points.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well 'as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

The need for the more accurate measurement of blasting results has increased substantially with the proliferation of the types of explosives available to mining operations in South Africa. The primary object of blasting is the production of broken rock of a specific size distribution. A method for the measurement of size distribution, more popularly known as fragmentation, is being developed at Sishen Iron Ore Mine, and the object of this paper is to describe the method briefly and so encourage an exchange of views on reliable methods. Once the fragmentation of broken rock can be assessed reliably, meaningful conclusions can be drawn from blasting trials. It will then be possible for equipment productivity to be related to muckpile properties, with the accompanying advantages.

A strain of Pseudomonas stutzeri isohted from selenium contaminated surface waters, was found to be effective . in reducing selenate (Se04 2) stoichiometrically to selenite (Se03 2 '), which was further reduced to elementaJ selenium (Se0 ). These reactions were concurrent with the microbial oxidation of lactate. In order to assess quantitatively the amounts of seilenate and selenitein solution, improvements to existing analytical methods (ion exchange chromatography and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry technique) .were made.

"IntroductionTHE OPINION is held by many persons outside the mining industry, and by some within it, that mine •operators customarily find it advantageous to mine •only the richer parts of orebodies and to leave behind, perhaps permanently, leaner material which could be mined only at a lesser profit. This opinion and the inference which might be drawn from it that 'gutting' of mineral resources is a common feruture• of the mining industry are prejudicial to the intertsts of the industry and deserve careful scrutiny. Oddly enough, a theory of mine economics which gives much support for the opinion was advanced first by members of the mining profession itself, has been repeated •several times in mining literature, and to my knowledge has never been adequately refoted.According to the theory, selective mining of the rich ore first on a large scale will yield substantial gains and these gains do not merely reflect the desire of 'money minded investors' for a quick return but derive from the logical application of compound interest rates and the concept of ;present value. W. O. Hotchkiss and R. D. Parks (1) illustrate the reasoning with a hypothetical example in which an orebody of 4,000,000 tons may be mined either in its entirety in forty years at $1.00 per ton profit or selectively with the recovery of only the richest half in twenty years at $1.50 per ton profit. They show that, with Hoskold rates of 4 and 8 per cent, the present value of profits from mining only the richer 2,000,000 tons exceeds the present value of profits :from mining the whole orebody by about 20 per cent."

In late 2013, the installation of the world's first application of a break-through technology for rail hardening was started at Baogang Iron & Steel (Group) Co. Ltd. in Inner Mongolia, China, one of world's leading rail producers. The "Injector Dualphase Rail Hardening" (idRHa+) system was developed by Primetals Technologies and Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A. (RINA-CSM) a Technical Center headquartered in Rome, Italy. Baogang was a key partner, providing its large expertise of premiumrail producer, including its experience with existing offline technologies. With a design based on thermal, mechanical and metallurgical models, idRHa+ can apply customized cooling protocols, so to obtain the desired microstructure and hardness distribution across the rail head, with a high degree of accurateness and operation flexibility. idRHa+ can be installed in inline or offline configurations. During 2014, the system was successfully commissioned at rail mill #2 in the city of Baotou, Inner Mongolia, and entered the regular commercial production. This paper gives an overview of the key concepts behind idRHa+'s design, the progression of its commissioning and testing till the ramp-up to consistent industrial operation. Derived from idRHa+ research and experience, other water-cooling technologies are available for different applications such as: quenching & tempering of medium-large sections, control of distorsion of merchant bars, quenching of stainless grades for improving the resistance to corrosion.

The oxidation of sulfides is a complex process involving gaseous products and intermediate species given rise to emission and absorption spectra which carry out important information about the reaction process. This information could be used for on line monitoring of pyrometallurgical reactor if the appropriate sensors were available. We present in this paper an analysis of the concept that has been successfully applied in iron and steel making industry, as well on fuel combustion control, where the spectra measurement gives the possibility for online monitoring and automatic control of high temperature processes. This concept has not been widely applied in the nonferrous pyrometallurgical primary production. The design of new sensors is discussed from the analysis of spectra measurements during flash combustion of copper concentrates at laboratory scale.

"The Spyrometer™ imaging pyrometer brings new dimension of imaging capabilities to temperature measurement technology by combining a high temperature video camera with scanning optical pyrometry. This gives the operators the ability to observe process conditions while measuring the temperature of virtually any object or region in the field of view. Since the lens tube of the camera can be air or water cooled, it is possible to see inside furnaces giving a very good view of many different types of metallurgical processes. Specific benefits in process knowledge and maintenance tasks for furnaces in different types of metal industries are discussed.1-Principles of Imaging PyrometryLens tube, camera and processorImaging pyrometry is the combination of video imaging and computer-driven pyrometry that measures the temperature of certain zones (selected by the operator) within the image viewed on the monitor screen. To obtain a detailed image of the metallurgical process under observance, it is necessary to place the optical objective of the camera close to the process. The Spyrometer™ (which is Quadtek's tradename for its imaging pyrometer) objective is housed in a lens tube that is cooled and permits insertion inside the vessel of interest. The length of the lens tube is chosen on the basis of making sure that the tip of the tube is just beyond the refractories lining the inside of the furnace. In most pyrometallurgical processes, we have found that the most reliable system set-up uses a water cooled shroud to cool the lens tube optics. A sapphire window provides maximum protection from the environment. Even in the case of the water cooled version, there is an air purge for the lens that keeps the objective clean and protects against hot metal splashes."

Refractory wear caused by melts is one of the major determining factors for the interval of shut-down repair of the metallurgical furnaces in general. Calcium ferrite slag employed by M it subishi Continuous Copper Converter, shows hi& fluidity and corrosive characteristics against most of the refractories. In order to improve the corrosion resistance of the refractories, the mechanism of MgO-based refractory wear by the calcium ferrite slag was intensively studied. The dissolution behavior of the refractory into the molten slag and the penetration of the molten slag into the refractory were observed by crucible tests and newly developed oscillating furnace tests. It was found that the wear of MgO-based refractories by the calcium ferrite slag is mainly dominated by the internal structural failure caused by the penetration of CaO-Cu20 rich slag which is formed as a result of the preferential absorption of FeO, from original slag by the spinel of the refractory.

"U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mines to use refuge alternatives (RAs) to provide a breathable air environment for 96 hours. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is heat and humidity buildup inside the RA. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress or even death. MSHA regulations require that the apparent temperature in an occupied RA not exceed 95 °F. To investigate this, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. The test results showed that the average measured air temperature within the RA increased by 9.4 °C (17 °F) and the relative humidity approached 94 percent at the end of a 96-hour test. The test results were used to benchmark a thermal simulation model of the tested RA. The validated thermal simulation model predicted the volume-weighted average air temperature inside the RA tent at the end of 96 hours to within 0.06 °C (0.1 °F) of the average measured air temperature. IntroductionIf an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who fail to escape from the mine can enter a refuge alternative (RA) for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the potentially adverse thermal environment inside an RA from the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration, and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress, heat stroke or even death."
