"The heat transfer conditions on the outer side of a Sirosmelt lance have been determined using experimental measurements in combination with a mathematical model. By measuring the temperature distribution along the wall of an operating Sirosmelt lance, as well as the thickness of the slag layer on it, it was possible to use the model to determine both the heat transfer coefficient between the vessel contents and the lance, as well as the effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer. The effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer was found to be within the range 0.7-1.3 W.m-1. ºCl, which was in good agreement with measured values for magnetite. The outside heat transfer coefficient varied from 80 to ISO W.m-2. ºC1, which was smaller than quoted in the literature for metal/slag systems. The discrepancy was attributed to the high thermal resistance experienced between the lance wall and the slag layer, as well as the large quantities of combustion gases that envelop the lance tip and reduce convection and conduction from the melt to the lance. INTRODUCTIONThe Sirosmelt submerged combustion smelting process [1] utilizes top injection lances to deliver fuel and air into a metallurgical melt. To help prevent lance failure from attack by liquid slag, helical vane swirlers are used within the annular lance to impart swirl to the flowing air and enhance the heat transfer from the lance wall to the air. The swirlers thus cool the wall, and enable a frozen layer of slag to form on its outer surface. This solid layer ensures liquid slag cannot reach the lance surface, and the lance is protected.A mathematical model of the heat transfer processes associated with the lance has been developed, which combines heat balance equations with engineering correlations to predict the wall and cooling air temperature of the lance, as well as the air pressure distribution. An account of the model was given by Rankin et al. [2]. To further enhance the model and enable it to predict the thickness of slag accumulating on the lance, a detailed analysis of the heat flow through the slag layer commenced in 1992. The long-term outlook Tor Australla's traditional mining products is for flat demand and continuing low prices. This has come about because of three far-reaching changes since earlier boom days: 1. Continuing declines in intensity of usage of basic mine products; 2. The failure of newer western and third world developing countries to realise growth expectations; and 3. Continued production pressure from third world countries (and first-world primary producers) in an effort to earn foreign exchange and rectify trade balances. These trends have led to a general situation of excess supply and weak demand. In this environment, the prerequisites for survival in the mining sector are first-class mines, modern and efficient production methods, low unit costs, aggressive marketing, and products with reasonable operating margins. Many of Australia's mines meet these prerequisites. Following the A$ depreciation and widespread unit cost reductions, most of these mines will be moderately profitable at current depressed commodity prices. They are well placed to benefit from price rises if these eventuate. A new generation of mines is concentrating on a more profitable product range (gold, diamonds, uranium, mineral sands). Australia's balance of trade remains firmly dependent on the primary mining and agricultural industries (Fig. 1). Despite optimistic talk of high-tech developments, tourism and a resurgence of manufacturing, these will remain a small component of Australia's export structure.

This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Mineral Hill copper mine , is one of a series being prepared by the Division of Minerals of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts. of the United States . The Mineral Hill mine is situated on the northeastern piedmont of the Sierrita Mountains at an altitude of 3,650 feet in sec . 35 , T. 16 S. , R. 12 E. , and sec . 2 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , Pima mining district , Pima County , Ariz . ( fig . 1 ) . The claims (figs . 2 and 3) are in a gently rolling area with only scant desert vegetation . The average annual precipitation is about 11 inches . The nearest surface water is the Santa Cruz River , an intermittent stream 8 miles east of the mine . The property is owned by the Banner Mining Co. , a Nevada corporation . This report presents a brief history of the mine , describes the geology of the area and the ore deposits , outlines methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives methods of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves and values . Development and stoping methods are explained , and methods of underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures are described . The concluding section of the paper is a section on milling . The Mineral Hill mine is an old mine that was reopened in 1951 after having been closed for 30 years .

The harmfulness and destructiveness of mine gas explosion is quite serious, which is the first of all kinds of coal mine disasters. Once the gas explosion occurs, it could instantly generate explosion shock waves, high temperature airflows, and disaster gases, which cause the destruction of underground ventilation structures, disruption of airflow direction in a mine ventilation network, and miners’ deaths by asphyxiation. As an important barrier to prevent the spread of accidents caused by the gas explosion, the safety and reliability of the mine seal affects the mine’s production and the health of workers. Due to the demands of coal mine production and transportation, a large number of longitudinal and horizontal roadway networks have been developed underground. There are not only many flat and straight roadways in the complex roadway network structure, but also a large number of different types of bifurcations and bends. Once a gas explosion occurs, the impact of the blast waves on the mine seal after passing through the complex path is difficult to determine. Therefore, this paper establishes a numerical model of bifurcated and cornered roadways and studies how the impact of gas explosion shock waves on the structure of sandwich mine seal after passing through different types of bifurcated and cornered roadways. The damage state of sandwich mine seal is analyzed. The researching finding could prevent and manage the spread of gas explosion disaster, and improve the disaster mitigation of mine explosion accident.

Since 1937 the Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations to provide the technical information necessary to guide the safe use of diesel engines underground in the United States. Coincident with the beginning of the technical study, a survey was made of State regulations pertaining to the use of internal-combustion engines underground.3/ At that time it was found that owing to the known hazards of gasoline locomotives, many States had enacted legislation or regulations limiting or prohibiting their use underground. Some of this legislation prohibited, or could be interpreted as prohibiting, the use of any type of internal-combustion engines in underground workings. After World War II diesel-powered equipment was introduced underground in many States, and pertinent questions are received frequently by the Bureau of Mines about the regulations that permit such applications. Because it was known that new and revised regulations had been made effective in some States in the nearly 20 years that have elapsed since the previous survey,3/ the Bureau decided that a review of the latest regulations in the leading mineral-producing States would be a valuable source of information for those engaged in the production of minerals as well as others. Accordingly, where feasible, this report includes abstracts of State laws and regulations as they affect the use of internal-combustion engines underground, particularly diesel engines. The substance of comments from State officials also are included when these appear to be helpful to interpretation of the regulations.

In both trials the device demonstrated effective and reliable data acquisition capabilities.

As the world’s reserves of coarse and high-grade iron ores continue to shrink, beneficiation is becoming increasingly important. The resulting concentrates cannot be used directly as feedstock for iron making, but require an additional agglomeration step. Pelletizing is preferred, because the uniform chemical, physical, and metallurgical characteristics of pellets make them a more desirable feed for the iron making processes. The heat hardening or induration of pellets is typically done in shaft furnaces, grate-kiln systems or on straight grates. Rotary kilns were originally developed in the late 19th century for Portland cement production [1]. The main development work for the successful adaptation of the process to the thermal treatment (induration) of green balls from iron ore was performed by Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA in the 1960’s [2].The straight grate process, which was first used in 1955 at Silver Bay, Minnesota, was a dedicated development with the aim to pelletize and indurate magnetite (taconite) concentrate [2]. There are various important technical and economical distinctions between the two pelletizing technologies. The most important differences include that a grate-kiln has three distinct pieces of equipment, a preheat grate, a rotary kiln and an annular cooler, whereas in the case of a straight grate, the entire indurating process is done on one piece of equipment only. In addition, both technological solutions have differences in their recuperation systems, direction of air flow in drying, number of burners, form of pellet movement, etc., which cause differences in raw material suitability, process control, economical aspects, plant operation and product pellet quality.

"IntroductionThe data contained in this paper were collected during the course of an investigation which covered 15 representative coal mines in 6 coal-mining States. The purpose of the investigation was to determine by atmospheric sampling how much dust was raised into the air during the various operations of coal mining, such as undercutting with machines, loading coal by hand, and transporting it from the working face to the surface. The data thus obtained were considered from two angles - namely, the possible physiological effect of inhalation and the explosion hazard of the dust. No attempt will be mode to discuss the former factor in this paper.CONDITIONS OF MININGThe mines in which this investigation was conducted were considered representative, and it is believed that the results obtained will suffice for the average dustiness encountered in most coal mines. .All of the coal mined was bituminous, from beds 30 to 120 inches thick. Only the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining was employed. Daily production ranged from approximately 700 to 1500 tons and the men employed from 150 to 450. Coal was undercut by short-wall mining machines in all mines, with the exception of one in which pick mining was employed. Loading at the face was done by miners; none of the mines used mechanical loaders. Electric drills, both for brushing roof and for shooting coal, were commonly used although some roof work was done with jack-hammers and a. little of both with augers. Coal was hauled by motor, mule, or rope power in end-gate cars with capacities ranging from 1600 to 3600 pounds. With few exceptions, coal was won at the face by dry methods - that is to say, no water was employed fox wetting down the dust either during undercutting, loading, or transportation."

The Sago Mine Disaster, on January 2, 2006, placed renewed focus on several different aspects of safety in the underground coal mining industry. One area which received increased attention since Sago and other underground coal mining events is the concept of Safety Culture. This report describes the results of a pilot Safety Culture Assessment implemented at a small Appalachian underground coal mine, hereafter referred to as the Mine. The purposes of this pilot assessment were to (a) evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of a methodology for assessing safety culture that had previously been developed for use within other industries, (b) to initiate an investigation into the understanding and defining of the existing safety culture of the underground coal mining industry, and (c) provide meaningful and useful recommendations for the participating mine for their consideration in their ongoing quest to enhance their existing safety culture. This pilot assessment was conducted in July 2007. The report provides information regarding the presence or absence of safety culture characteristics within the Mine. Observations regarding the characteristics of the Mine?s safety culture that should be sustained are presented. Areas in need of attention and management focus to improve the Mine?s safety culture are presented as well as recommendations for moving forward. Safety culture characteristics that are important for the existence of a positive safety culture have been identified to include: - Safety is a clearly recognized value in the organization. - Accountability for safety in the organization is clear. - Safety is integrated into all activities in the organization. - A safety leadership process exists in the organization. - Safety culture is learning driven in the organization. - A process for establishing a strong and effective Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) is in place. Performance objectives are associated with each of the safety culture characteristics and particular behaviors and attitudes have been identified that can be measured to evaluate these objectives. Using a methodology originally developed with the support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an assessment of selected organizational behaviors and attitudes was conducted to evaluate the Mine in terms of these safety culture characteristics and their associated performance objectives. The methodology involves obtaining a variety of quantitative and qualitative information, using multiple data-gathering methods. The information collected is largely based upon the perceptions of the individuals in the organization. The evaluation is a ?point in time? snapshot of the Mine, but cultural beliefs and assumptions do not change quickly. The feasibility and usefulness of the methodology was successfully demonstrated during this pilot assessment. Publication of this information circular results from an invitation extended to the Bureau of Mines by the Utex Exploration Co. to visit the company mine, on the Mi Vida claim about 39 miles southeast of Moab, in the Big Indian mining district, San Juan County, Utah. The Bureau is pleased to present this record of the Utex mine -- a property that in the relatively short period of 4 months has become one of the major uranium-ore producers on the Colorado Plateau. The ore deposit was discovered in July 1952 by Charles A. Steen, a geologist-prospector, now chief geologist of the Utex Exploration Co., in tae course of drilling the first diamond-core borehole in the Big Indian district. High-grade ore, 14 feet thick, was penetrated by the borehole. Sinking of a shaft, from which to develop the ore body, was begun in October, and the first shipment of ore left the property December 6, 1952. Ore production, as recorded on ore-settlement sheets received by the company up to July 15, 1953, totaled 16,000 tons averaging, 0.51 percent U305 and 1.25 percent V205. Discovery of the ore body and the large production of ore were achieved without any financial assistance from the Government.

"This paper defines the responsibilities and functions of the Maintenance Department, and its organization, physical and human assets, highlighting the unique operating problems. Due to the self-sufficient aspect of the Asbestos Hill Deception Bay project, the Maintenance Department cover-s fields that are numerous and very dissimilar: production, mobile, processing, service, power generation, fire protection, heating, water and sewage disposal equipment. Added to this, buildings, plant and camps, wharves and communications equipment all demand versatility, adaptability and expertise from maintenance personnel. Good maintenance practices are a necessity in this environment and are more critical than at southern locations; that is, high-quality replacement material, complete and well-controlled preventive maintenance, major repairs on a component-replacement basis, updated inventory, efficient training and permanent contacts with suppliers, combined with an equipment improvement program, updated specifications on lubricants, hoses, seals, filters, etc., are mandatory. The seasonal aspect of the operations applies a great deal of pressure on the maintenance team, as the production months do not permit major repairs. Short- and medium range planning and accurate evaluation of equipment conditions highly influence production efficiency. Maintenance control, planning and scheduling do not follow the accepted standard routines, as personnel turnover normally does not permit an accumulation of knowledge of the equipment history and condition by the •individual tradesman."

Multiple drill sections through many of the numerous breccia pipes in the American Eagle copper deposit at Copper Creek, Arizona, have been evaluated by means of alteration and geochemical data. Contoured plots indicate vertically plunging, concentric, cylindrical shells of alteration and mineralized rock that are similar in structure, geometry, magnitude and petrology to the San Manuel-Kalamazoo Deposit, located about 14 miles to the southwest. Both deposits are similar in dimension and consist of multiple, irregular, rod-shaped injections of porphyry into a granodiorite host. Analogous to the San Manuel-Kalamazoo Deposit, most of the porphyry plugs are oriented parallel to the cylindrical axis of the "ore shell". A continuously mineralized, elliptical shell, inferred from deep drilling, is capped by a flatter zone of copper mineralization. Above this flat zone, copper-bearing fluids were channeled upward along conduits that correspond with quartz-sericite "breccia pipes". At depth, zones of sericite and K-feldspar alteration products exhibit conformable relationships with the copper deposition. A "bullet-shaped" ore shell, with a nearly vertical axis, is proposed to explain the conformable zones of altered and mineralized rock. The "nose" or top of the "bullet" is 1800 to 2300 feet below the surface, and structurally controlled in part by steeply dipping Hi and ENE faults. If correct, this model suggests that the vertical ore shell may extend to great depth.

Methane sensors using principle of catalytic oxidation of methane are employed for determination of methane content in ambient air of coal mines. Certain foreign gases or vapors in the air poison the catalyst of the sensor effecting the sensor's response. After literature search of poison compounds of Pt and Pd oxidation catalyst, experimental studies of catalyst poison kinetics were made for three siloxane compounds, tributyl-phosphate, monobromotrifluoromethane, and hydrogen sulfide, selected as poison vapors. Concentration range of the poison vapors was varied in a range from 3000 to 0.1 ppb (v/v). Three siloxane vapors produced strong catalyst poison effect, followed by tributylphosphate, hydrogen sulfide and monobromotrifluoromethane for the high concentration level of the poison vapors. The poison effects are influenced significantly by concentration of the vapors. Threshold poison vapor concentrations where effect of the poison vapors on the sensor is minimal were determined experimentally. Experimental studies were made further for prevention method of catalyst poison by adsorption techniques. Use of activated carbon cloth inserted on the sensor's head prevented catalyst poisoning efficiently.

Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. A proposed design for a plant is given, INTRODUCTION This work was conducted by the Rare Metals Branch as a part of research on zirconium at the Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratories, Albany, Oreg., under the guidance of S. In the hard-rock mining industry, the generation of fines during blasting is an important issue because it has a significant effect on production processes. Although various approaches have been used to estimate fines generation in recent decades, as a practical matter, measuring the amount of fines is nearly impossible given the technical limitations and the scale of mine blasts. In this study, a dynamic PPV damagemodel was developed and applied to predict fines generation as a result of blasting. This modified version of the crushed zone model (CZM) considers dynamic rock properties and peak particle velocity (PPV), which represents the induced stress in blasting. Dynamic rock-fracturing tests were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) to determine the parameters that represent the relationships between rock strength and strain rate as well as the relationships between fines amount and strain rate in the model. A case study was conducted that entailed determining the radius of the crushed zone for given blast designs and rock properties and then measuring the fines amount within this crushed zone. This case study indicated that the dynamic PPV model can provide a rough estimate of fines generation for given dynamic rock properties and blast design parameters and that this method has the potential to be a useful indicator, or index, of fines generation.

THIS paper is chiefly a description of the improvements in dust control chat have been brought about in the assay office grinding room at Wright-Hargreaves. The fume exhaust systems are briefly included because they also are important to the health of the employees. There are three chief factors which determine the efficiency of a dust control system: First, the amount of time and thought spent in designing it. Second, how close! y it is kept up to date with the growth of the plant-a system that is adequate for the number of machines operating when it is installed may fall short of fulfilling its purpose as the plant expands. Third, unless someone is held directly responsible, a system is likely to get out of repair and gradually lose its efficiency-this can easily be detected by regular dust surveys. In designing the present system at Wright-Hargreaves, the object kept in mind was to reduce the dust concentration of all operations to a safe limit, chat is, well under 300 particles per cubic centimecer of air. By doing this, a condition would be attained chat would make it possible to discontinue the use of respirators, which at best are not very comfortable and do not remove all of the hazardous fine-dust particles.

Creede, one of the younger major mining camps in Colorado, grew spectacularly to a town of eight or ten thousand people in the early 1890's following discovery of rich ore in the Amethyst and Last Chance mines. Gross metal production in gold, silver, lead, copper and zinc rose to a maximum of four million dollars a year in 1893. Annual production dropped to much lower figures and ranged between one hundred and five hundred thousand dollars per year during the period from 1914 to 1940. Production reached a gross of eight hundred thousand to one million dollars per year by the mid-1950's. In the years 1953 to 1957, Steven and Ratté conducted geologic investigations which were carried on as part of a cooperative program of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Colorado Metal Mining Fund Board. In a preliminary report on the Creede District, Steven and Ratté suggested that the Bulldog Mountain Fault Zone appeared to be a favorable structure to prospect. On the basis of that recommendation, augmented by independent work done by Manning W. Cox, the property was acquired, transferred to Bulldog Mountain, Inc. and financed by an O. M. E. loan. Late in 1963 Homestake Mining Company, under a Lease and Option Agreement, backed the venture by furnishing additional funds plus management.

The coal seam in the southern coal field of the Ordos Basin serves as the main aquifer, while the region is known for its high-intensity coal mining activities. The coupling effect of mine water and the strong disturbance caused by high-intensity mining have brought serious challenges to the stability of coal pillars. To address this, a formula for determining the reasonable width of coal pillars under the aforementioned coupling effect and establish a criterion for coal pillar instability in this paper. A case study was on the 11,215 working face at the Xiaojihan coal mine in the area to investigate coal pillar stability. Results indicate that the strength and stability of the coal pillar are affected by the water content, with a small water content increasing its strength and large water content weakening it. In high-intensity exploration of watery coal seams, the best stability of the coal pillar is achieved at optimal water content and mining rates. For the Xiaojihan coal mine, the optimum water content and mining rate are 3.31% and 20 m/d, respectively, ensuring the efficient mining of watery coal seams. Furthermore, this study's findings can provide valuable references for the mining design of coal mines with similar geological conditions in the region.

To mining people who have experienced the tremendous expansion of existing operations and the development of new properties over the last several years we do not have to point out the difficulties in hiring skilled equipment operators. To those of you who have opened operations in some of the more remote places in the world this is not just a difficulty. It is an impossibility. Your only recourse has been to try and train whatever manpower has been available. Depending upon your success in training, the next problem has been to keep them. On todays modern equipment, the skill of the operator remains as the greatest single variable affecting the performance of the machine. On a blast hole drill, for example, a skilled operator will get good production footage, acceptable bit life and minimal machine downtime The unskilled operator will not only fail to get the acceptable production footage but all too frequently this failure is coupled with low bit life, high repair costs and excessive machine downtime. Even between experienced operators, on identical machines, in the same kind of material we find significant variations in performance. It is, therefore, the skill of the operator, not just his experience, which makes the difference. The problem, as presented to us by our customers, has been to find a way for the unskilled man, with minimal training, to match the performance of the most skilled and experienced operator. The obvious answer is automation.
