The froth phase plays an important role in the flotation and upgrading of the final concentrate. At present, the techniques that have been used in the mineral industry to measure the froth recovery have limitations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the froth in an industrial flotation cell. A unique device has been developed which is capable of decoupling the froth zone from the pulp zone. It consists of two concentric tubes. The inner tube acts as a dropback collection chamber or catcher. The particles that detach from the froth phase fall directly into the catcher and are collected as froth dropback. The froth recovery measurements were carried out in a rougher bank of a copper concentrator treating sulphide minerals. The dropback device is designed so that it can be immersed into a plant size flotation cell and plant froth recovery measurements can be taken at any given time. During the experiments, the bubbles laden with valuable mineral particles entered the device from the plant flotation cell, subsequently rising to form a froth layer at the top of the device. The particles that detached from the froth zone were collected in the dropback collection chamber whereas the concentrate sample was collected by a launder. By drying, sizing and chemical analysis of the concentrate and dropback samples, the froth recovery, was estimated on the basis of the valuable component. This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World," (Information Circular 80 1 7, 196 1. ) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader's attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler's control over copper, then bronze, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group's position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group's ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs, which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study, evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed unidirectional powered precleaner, filter and pressurizer that brings clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This research effort provided another example of the enhancement in air quality that can be achieved in an enclosed cab from the implementation of an improved filtration system and by establishing positive pressurization from increased intake air volume and sealing the cab. This testing showed a significant reduction in respirable dust levels in the enclosed cab when comparing baseline versus post-testing results. Since dust levels were similar near the roof and floor of the cab during post-testing, the unidirectional flow pattern did not appear to significantly improve the performance over the conventional design in this study.

"Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems (VTS). To investigate flow effects under realistic conditions, especially clogging effects, a 136 m high test facility for flow analysis in vertical transport has been constructed using available mining infrastructure. Tests are run in a closed circuit, using a system of downfall and riser pipelines connected to a compact sediment injection- and separation unit as well as the centrifugal pump. The riser is equipped with pressure sensors, as well as temperature sensors, flow meter, concentration meter and high speed camera to allow comprehensive analyses of the flow regime and behavior of transported material within the flow. Additional mobile measurement devices allow wear and tear analyses of pipe material. This paper focuses on the determining factors of the tests leading to the design as well as the installation and trial of the test facility itself and explains the used components and work principles. INTRODUCTION Since the 1970s several research projects had been conducted investigating in the possibility of deep sea mining. In recent times projects for deep sea mining operations have started again, considering the rising demand on natural resources, especially raw earth elements. Yet projects like the Nautilus project on the deposit Solwara 1 [1], or Japanese projects focusing on the region of Okinawa [2] and Chinese projects [3] planning on depths of “only” about 2,500 up to 3,000 m. Until now no economical deep sea mining project was realized, due to the enormous difficulties of deep sea environments. Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects, considering transportation heights up to 5 km. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems or VTS [4]. Critical parts of the system would be identified and investigated to deliver solutions and higher the technology readiness level to a level were planning of a pilot project can be considered. At first case examples for mining projects of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS, 1,600 m water depth) and manganese nodules (MnN, 5,000 m water depth) had been calculated on basis of economical frame conditions, such as planned production rates to be efficient. As depicted in Figure 1 two major possible systems had been used for comparison, airlift system and pump system, considering multiple pump stations or single pumps. Based on the results and comparisons for the calculated vertical transport systems critical components and flow effects had been identified."

A common problem in Gas Treatment Centers (GTC) from primary aluminium smelters is the temperature of the gas to be treated : above a threshold, filtering media are irreversibly damaged. The traditional way of dealing with high gas temperature is to dilute with fresh air, which implies over sizing - and therefore higher cost for - the GTC in order to have the capacity to treat this dilution air without compromising on pot suction. A system was developed which decreases gas temperature without having to use dilution air. This system is based on water pulverization in gas collectors. The water vaporization leads to a temperature decrease of the gas. A pilot system was trialed in our R&D unit. Satisfactory results led to the development of an industrial system based on Envirocare equipment (partnership), which was trialed in our production plant in Tomago (NSW, Australia). This patented system was then generalized in this plant, which is now using it with success during austral summer.

Coal is a low-cost and high-calorific-value fuel. The coal mining industry worldwide has been suffering from severe accidents due to coal dust explosion hazards since its inception. Statistically, it was observed that 12,489 fatalities had occurred in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900–2020. There are numerous methods for detection, prevention, and control of coal dust explosions in mines. The underground mining environment is unpredictable and has an array of variables. These undulating factors make it difficult to prevent or control the coal dust explosion hazard. However, coal mining is done aggressively throughout the world, especially in developing countries as coal is a major source of thermal energy used in power plants contributing to about 38% (IEA, (2019), World Energy Outlook, IEA, Paris https:// www. iea. org/ repor ts/ world- energy- outlo ok- 2019.) of world electricity. Worldwide, coal dust explosibility studies are carried out in experimental mines, laboratories, and simulations. The complexity, lack of proper infrastructure, and unavailability of laboratory equipment sometimes make it difficult to study coal dust explosibility. The authors have discussed in detail and proposed that the CFD modelling can be a viable option for studying and evaluating coal dust explosibility.

Introduction The first experiment in underground gasification of coal in the United States was conducted at Gorgas, Walker county, Alabama, under a co-operative arrangement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Company, at the suggestion of the Power Company. The test was conducted on property of the Alabama Power Company, that owns some 19,000 acres of coal-bearing lands on which there is developed a highly mechanized mine producing some 2,500 cons of good quality steam coal per day. At the same locality ?there is a 200,000 kilowatt steam plant one of the largest in the southern portion of the United States. The Alabama Power Company owes much of its beginning in 1912 to British vision and courage. The original plans for building hydroelectric plants in Alabama, and for the construction of necessary transmission lines, were submitted to Sperling & Company, bankers of London, who agreed to underwrite certain bond issues, the proceeds of which would be used in launching the new Company on its programme. The set-up by which these funds from England were received was through an intermediary Canadian company, which the English investors desired. The Canadian company - Alabama Traction, Light and Power Company, Ltd. became owner of the securities of the Alabama Power Company and marketed its own securities through the banking house of Sperling & Company. Without assistance at this time the Alabama Power Company could not have gone ahead with its programme of expansion and the bringing together of the properties necessary for laying the foundation for a strong Company, fortified with ample power resources essential for future requirements and for dependable service to the public.

PREAMBLE THIS PAPER comprises material presented in two separate 'Papers at the British Commonwealth Scientific Specialist Conference on Fuel Research held in London, England, in July, 1950. These papers are now available for publication in Canada, since only essential parts of the conference discussions, in addition to the resolutions resulting therefrom, will be published in the official Proceedings of the Conference. Inasmuch as the information presented concerns Canadian organizations and training facilities for fuel research, it should be of general interest to Canadian scientists, and especially to the Coal Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Part I, the alternate title of which is Facilities in Canada for Fuel Research and for Exchange of Information and Staff, does not include research on peat, oil shale, petroleum oils in general, and natural gas, and omits studies of the geology, constitution, and production of coal. Special reference is, however, made to research on the heavy crude oils and bitumen of the Western Prairie Provinces, and particularly to their production and treatment to produce crudes for oil refinery processing.

Tunneling could be a major challenge to tunneling contractors as tunneling operations can be seriously affected by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performance. Specifying the appropriate TBM methodology, selection of systems and features, is critical for managing tunnel risks and contribute to successful tunneling project. The paper analyzes tunneling records from the recently completed City of Toronto’s Ashbridges Bay Treatment Outfall tunnel project and underlines the righteous selection of the TBM type and associated TBM systems in achieving good advance rates during tunnelling and managing project risks. The paper intends to draw attention of a few aspects of TBM technical specification importance and highlight the lessons learned from this process.

"Mining companies routinely invest in improvements to their processing operations, but often these enhancements do not work to full effect.Improvements can be ineffectual because underlying process problems are not identified or prioritised for correction or repair.This is frequently because ‘black box’ solutions deployed to implement process control improvements typically rely on instrumentation to provide data for algorithms to work effectively, and these solutions are often ineffective or disabled at mineral processing sites.There are three key reasons they can fail to deliver: vital instrumentation is not calibrated or functioning as required basic process control and loop tuning was not implemented correctly or is in need of tuning there is an inability to support the ‘black box’ solutions on-site.Many of these problems can be overcome by implementing operational analytics that identify where problems are occurring and prioritise where improvements need to be made.Incorporating operational analytics into process improvement is not a new methodology. It is more a back-to-basics approach to make more efficient use of capital and systems already deployed.Data collection systems, such as the OSIsoft PI System, provide real-time and historical process information for process control experts to analyse and identify areas for improvement. However, most systems are not used effectively. With some simple enabling, data collection systems can provide evidence for prioritising investments in improvements and determining an investment’s effectiveness.MIPAC advocates that the initial step, with analytical evidence, is that clients review the control strategies and implement small influential instrument repairs/calibrations and operator training. As sponge iron is much like porous, coarse sand, it is a tempting material to use in place of coarse scrap iron as a precipitant of metals, for scrap iron is relatively awkward to handle and exposes only a small amount of surface to pregnant solutions. The results of the experiments described in this bulletin are largely a record of the behavior of sponge iron as a precipitant of lead and copper under laboratory conditions comparable to those that would obtain in a commercial plant were it attempted to secure the maximum contact of surface between solution and precipitant. Physically, the study is largely one of the rates of diffusion of the metal ions in the solutions and through the metallic coatings surrounding the sponge iron particles. The practical objectives are to remove completely the valuable metals from solution and at the same time to obtain a precipitate of good grade. In order to fulfill this latter requirement, the precipitant should be almost completely consumed. These practical ends are usually secured by having the two substances involved pass each other counter-currently-that is, in such a manner as to have the strongest precipitant in contact with the most impoverished solution, and vice versa. EXPERIMENTS WITH LEAD SOLUTIONS In nearly all of the schemes involving the leaching of lead from its ores the metal has been put into solution as the chloride, and fairly concentrated liquors have been employed. The solubility of lead under such conditions is comparatively small at best; the hot pregnant liquors from which the metal is to be precipitated are then made nearly saturated with respect to lead, and only a very small amount of acid is used. Therefore it was not as necessary to learn the behavior of the sponge iron in precipitating lead from solutions of widely differing composition as to learn under what conditions, and with what mechanisms, this precipitation might be carried out most readily.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) has recently completed the construction of copper leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning facilities at their Toquepala and Cuajone plants in Southern Peru. Much of the ore for these new operations is the result of the existing mining operations that have been in existence as early as 1959. At Toquepala, pre-conditioning and bacterial dump leaching of the sulfide ore that was too low in copper content to be processed through the copper concentrator began in 1987. The Cuajone heap leach operation is treating copper oxide ore that has been stockpiled since the Cuajone concentrator began operation in 1976. The pregnant leach solutions from the dump leaching at Toquepala and the permanent pad heap at Cuajone are combined into one plant feed solution. Adjacent to the large dumps at Toquepala, a solvent extraction and electrowinning facility has been constructed. The electrowinning facility has a planned annual production rate of35,000 metric tons per year Grade A cathode copper. Initial production of the cathode copper began in November 1995.

"With more rigorous regulations being enacted in the mining industry, a need exists for cost effective and environmentally compliant technologies to remove selenium from mine impacted waters to ultra-low concentrations. Existing selenium treatment methods have high life cycle costs, introduce risks of acute fish toxicity, and produce biological waste residues that represent future liabilities. Furthermore, achieving selenium discharge limits of less than 4 ppb is a challenge for existing technologies. Selen-IX™ is a technology developed by BioteQ that selectively removes selenium from mine impacted waters to less than 1 ppb. The technology is purely physico-chemical and takes advantage of the basic principles of ion exchange and electrochemistry. Unlike conventional electrocoagulation that removes suspended solids and breaks emulsions or oxidizes heavy metals, the electrochemical process employed by Selen-IX™ relies on creating conditions where iron acts as a highly effective reducing reagent transforming selenium from a dissolved species into elemental selenium bound in a solid phase. The iron-selenium by-product of Selen-IX™ is an inorganic, non-hazardous and chemically stable solid. Due to their high iron content, the solids produced by Selen-IX™ are of interest to the steel making industry as a low cost feedstock. This offtake potential can not only reduce the life cycle cost of selenium removal by reducing disposal costs but more importantly, eliminate the risk of future environmental liabilities. In this paper, the basics of Selen-IX™ technology are presented along with results of successful piloting on streams from coal and copper-gold deposits.INTRODUCTIONVarious contaminants are released into mining wastewater during the extraction and processing of metals. One such contaminant is selenium. A naturally occurring element found in rocks and minerals, mining activities accelerate its release into the environment. Selenium in trace quantities is essential to all life forms but at higher concentrations it can be harmful, especially to aquatic life where selenium bioaccumulation can lead to reproductive deficiencies."

Many of the difficulties faced by the U.S. mineral industry in 1982 and 1983 emanated from the worldwide recession, from the high value of the U.S. exchange rate, and, in part, from actions taken by foreign governments to protect selected industries. While some problems will be minimized with continued worldwide economic recovery, others remain and may require special attention by U.S. policymakers. These problems include declining U.S. production capacity in selected mining and mineral processing industries, the impact of the high value of the U.S. exchange rate, and protectionist trade practices by competitor nations. Illustrative of the last is the International Trade Commission (ITC) determination in June 1984 that both the domestic steel and copper industries have been substantially injured by foreign imports. In its July 1984 recommendations to the President, the ITC suggested higher tariffs and quotas for 5 years on 70 percent of steel imports but conditioned the aid on cost-cutting and modernization steps by the domestic industry. In the copper decision, two commissioners recommended increased duties, two recommended that quotas be imposed, and one recommended that no relief be provided. The President decided in September to seek voluntary restraint agreements with nations that export steel to the United States and rejected both quotas and higher tariffs on copper imports. General Economic Setting This decade opened with the U.S. mineral industries struggling to deal with double-digit inflation, record high peacetime interest rates, and almost 7 years of oil-cartel-induced energy price increases that seriously affected the profitability of energy-intensive industries such as mineral production and processing.

The most promising candidate for the recovery of alumina from non-bauxitic sources is the leaching of clay by HCL acid followed by crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) by hydrogen chloride sparging. Hydrothermal precipitation of boehmite ( ?-A100H) from aluminum chloride solution will simplify the process, will reduce energy consumption and will eliminate corrosion problems involved in calcination of ACH to obtain alumina. This report summarizes the results of Phase I of a program to study the precipitation of boehmite from AlC13 solutions. The amount of boehmite precipitation from dilute A1C13 solutions (5 wt%) is . negligible below 200°C. Above 200°C the precipitation increases with increasing temperature approaching 40% at 300°C. Addition of HCl acid to the dilute A1C13 solution even in small quantities drastically reduces boehmite precipitation. Solution impurities such as Fe, Ca, Mg, or Na substantially promote the precipitation of boehmite. No precipitation is observed from concentrated A1C13 solution (30wt%) representing the leach liquor.

This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines study on the hazards of large-scale conveyor belt fires in underground coal mines, as a function of both air velocity and distance from belt surface to gallery roof. The fire hazards considered were smoke obscuration, toxic effects of carbon monoxide (CO), and elevated air temperatures downstream of the fire. All of these hazards scale with the ratio of fire intensity to ventilation airflow. These hazards were all found to be greater at the lower belt-to-roof distance, owing to the greater fire intensities that resulted. The hazards of smoke obscuration and elevated CO levels were greater at lower air velocities. Smoke obscuration was found to be the earliest hazard, reaching critical levels before the stage of belt flame spread. Critical levels of CO and downstream air temperatures were not reached until the later stages of flame spread. Fire growth rates during rapid flame spread were much greater than rates measured during the early stages of belt burning. Data were analyzed to determine the early-warning capability of fire sensors. Smoke sensors provided the earliest warning, followed closely by CO sensors. Thermal sensors did not exhibit any early warning capability.

Conventional and advanced coal preparation technologies were investigated through both a literature search and through direct contact with investigators and developers. In addition to a brief description of each process, performance characteristics including feedstock type, ash and sulfur reduction, thermal energy recovery and cost are provided in a tabular form. Seven of the most commonly utilized conventional coal preparation processes, including those respectively accepting coarse, intermediate and fine coal feed, were reviewed. It was found that certain properly implemented and well maintained conventional processes were capable of better than 75 percent ash removal while recovering 90 percent or more of the inherent thermal energy. Almost 50 advanced coal preparation processes were investigated based on biological, chemical and physical principles. Physical processes investigated included cycloning, homogeneous heavy media, electrostatic, high gradient magnetic, flotation and selective coalescence. Using pulverized coal as a feedstock, some of these processes are respectively reported to be capable of removing better than 95 percent ash. 95 percent pyritic sulfur, and 50 percent organic sulfur while incurring energy losses of less than 5 percent.

In mining, which is one of the industries with the highest risk of occupational accidents, a primary goal is to enhance safety through the thorough investigation of accidents using reliable methodologies. In this research, the data from 13,653 accidents reported in the Karadon Hard Coal Enterprise between 2000 and 2011 were analyzed and compared using the life-table and Kaplan-Meier methods. Accident records were classified and analyzed into four categories: environment-related, equipment-related, person-related and other accidents. Findings in terms of survival time indicate that environmentrelated and person-related accidents had the highest risk in Karadon, with equipment-related accidents having the lowest. This study established the reliability of using survival analysis methods to investigate occupational accidents in the mining sector. Given that environment-related and person-related accidents occur in a relatively short period, such as one year after starting work, it is recommended that research be done to improve workplace and occupational safety measures and broaden the training given to miners. Additionally, it is determined that increasing the use of automation and mechanization in underground coal mines, combined with developing a thorough equipment safety training program to raise awareness of the danger, can help prevent person-related occupational accidents caused by the interaction between equipment.
