(New Haven Meeting, February, 1909.) THE Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory is the gift of Prof. John Hays Hammond to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Professor Hammond was graduated from this school in the class of 1876, and has always shown great interest in its welfare and progress. In 1903, he offered to build and equip for it a mining and metallurgical laboratory. This offer was gratefully accepted by the trustees; and in October of the same year the architect, W. Gedney Beatty, and the writer were employed to draw up plans for the building, which is the largest of its kind in this country. The Treasurer's report shows the total gift of Professor Hammond, including land, building, and equipment, to have been $128,741.53. This does not include $5,000 given by Professor Hammond to defray incidental expenses. "With the continuous depletion of conventional sources of non ferrous metals, low grade complex sulphide deposits have been regarded as an alternative source of supply of zinc, copper, lead and also silver and gold. In spite of very important efforts in research in this domain it is still a long way to go in order to achieve reliable technological solutions both in ore dressing and metallurgical treatments which enable these complex materials to be regarded as commodities. The RLE process to treat bulk concentrates such as those obtained from portuguese ores, under development at LNETI and QUIMIGAL premises, combines experienced unit operations and innovative configurations and is an effective contribution for the future use of these materials. The results of three years of experimental work and main conclusions on the overall feasibility of the process are presented.IntroductionIn spite of the very well-known problems associated to the development of complex sulphide deposits, the economical importance of the enormous reserves of these materials, widespread all over the world, is so evident that its future use as source of supply of basic and precious metals and other minor elements is almost unavoidable.Critical steps in that direction are mainly concerned with favourable economical conditions and sound metallurgical practice for the treatment of nonferrous metals concentrates, which are nowadays still considered as non-conventional raw materials.Since Portugal is one of the countries where these orebodies occur more extensively, Portuguese authorities have dedicated since the beginning of the seventies, a big effort on finding economical and reliable processes for the recovery of copper, lead, zinc and also gold and silver, and for this purpose, several alternatives on ore dressing and metallurgical processing were studied, however without full sucess.Five years ago LNETI, a research laboratory, and QUIMIGAL, a chemical company, both state owned, decided to launch a research programme for the development of a metallurgical process for the treatment of NFM concentrates, which received financial support from NATO under its programme ""Science for Stability""."

Coal has been transported by belt conveyors in mines for many years; however, only since the beginning of the general mechanization period have complete transportation system of this type been employed. Aside from my complete belt-conveyor transportation systems, belt conveyors are frequently used in conjunction with other transportation. Many early installations, for the most part, were made without standards as a guide. As a result, some States have outlined certain requirements based more or less on experience following mine fires. Correlation of these regulations should result in more uniformity in connection with standardization of regulations. The National Electrical manufacturers Association has published standards for mining-belt-conveyor installations2/ that should be helpful to the coal-mining industry generally. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2F3/ requires certain controls for permissible-belt- conveyor drives, and similar requirements are listed in Bureau of Mines bulletin 514.4/ Committees of the American Mining Congress have prepared much valuable information concerning operation of belt conveyors, and a subcommittee on fire-resistant belting has been active. 5/

The nonmetallic minerals work of the Bureau of Mines started with the organization of the Mineral Technology Division in 1912. A special experiment station devoted to the mining, preparation, and processing of nonmetallic minerals was established in 1923 at New Brunswick, N. J., and concentration problems on nonmetallic minerals of all kinds also were studied at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. In July 1936 the Nonmetals Division was organized, and in May 1937 the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, N. J., was moved to and made a part of the new Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md. At present the Nonmetals Division operates at three points: The Eastern Experiment Station, College Park, Md., which is headquarters for the division chief; the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and the Northwest Experiment Station, Seattle, Wash., where coal washing and preparation studies are included with those on nonmetallic minerals. Sand, gravel, and aggregate work is carried on by the Mining Division, as sand and gravel preparation are intimately associated with mining methods. The Economics Branch of the Bureau of Mines also prepares occasional papers on nonmetallic technologic subjects in connection with the presentation of statistics on a particular industry and reviews of the mineral industry in foreign countries for use in the monthly publication, "Mineral Trade Notes."

"Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

Oven widths for experimental and commercial slot-type ovens differ appreably in most instances; the experimental ovens usually ranging from 10 to 14 inches and the commercial units from 14 to 21 inches. Application of results obtained with experimental ovens to commercial practice thus requires major extrapolations. A critical survey of the literature indicated that sufficient information about the effects of variations in oven width on the carbonizing process is not available to permit such extrapolations to be made with any considerable degree of confidence.

"Tunnels are built with a design life expectancy of over 100 years. One key component of such a design is the waterproofing system, which must reliably fulfil its function during the whole service lifetime of the tunnel structure. This paper deals with the determination of test criteria for the durability assessment of geosynthetic products in tunnel sealing systems. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa. To verify the results of the new test procedure the material properties of geosynthetic products samples removed from older tunnels are investigated. Based on the presented results of the still ongoing research programs some preliminary conclusion regarding the updating of regulations for tunnel sealing systems are given. INTRODUCTION Watertightness is directly related to the durability and serviceability of the concrete lining. Therefore, modern traffic tunnels and shafts (Figure 1) are generally protected against mountain/ground water and water penetrating through rock fissures by a sealing system, for example with a loose-laid polymeric sheet membrane. Hereby the waterproofing sealing systems must be reliably fulfilling their function during the whole service life of the tunnel structure, regularly of more than 100 years. In consequence, the quality and lifetime performance of the waterproofing materials—beside the correct professional and careful installation in a tunnel infrastructure, is of great importance. The challenge for the industry, owners, operators and designers is ultimately the development of qualification testing and requirements (acceptance criteria) for products to ensure the design lifetime performance. Hereby the qualification procedure is seen as a routine integrated in standards, norms or guidelines, wherein test procedures should cover typical environments for the specific application fields. Polymeric synthetic raw materials are increasingly used in products with long service lifetimes (e.g. in injections, gaskets, waterbars, spray-applied and sheet waterproofing membranes). During service they are subjected to chemical (e.g. oxidation processes) and physical (e.g. changes in morphology) influences from the environment, which affect their mechanical properties—and they age. Hereby organic materials are more affected than inorganic materials. Also, polymers show strongly temperature-dependent properties compared with other construction materials. However, their long-term aging behavior is not given per se and has to be explored extensively by suitable tests, which simulate—under accelerated processes—real exposures and loads. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa."

There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. A laboratory study of acid-ferrous sulfate treatment of low-grade manganese ores from the Cuyuna range, Minnesota resulted in 93-percent extraction of manganese as manganese sulfate with consumption of 3.8 pounds of H2S04 per pound of extracted manganese. Two types of ore were treated in consecutive stages. The first are contained carbonate minerals of manganese and iron, both soluble in H2S04 solution. The second ore contained manganese oxide minerals, insoluble in straight acid solution but soluble in the ferrous sulfate solution obtained from treating the first ore. Leaching data were obtained by countercurrent percolation of coarse (minus-1/2-inch) ore particles at room temperature and by agitating minus-65-mesh ore particles in heated solution. Extraction of manganese and acid consumption were the same, but the percolation leach required 6 days compared with 1 hour for hot agitation. Variations in the size of ore particles treated, leaching time, acid concentration, solution temperatures, and method of applying ferrous sulfate solution to the oxide ore were studied. The effects of several reagents for removing iron from solution and improving filtration were also studied.

High-purity quartz (SiO2) is an important material widely used in many industries, including semiconductor technology, telecommunication, and optics. The content and distribution of impurities in quartz significantly affect the processing methods. This paper provides an insightful review on the processing of high-purity quartz, covering the analytical techniques, separation methods, and the critical procedures used to assess the quality of quartz ore. More importantly, the critical review of the thermal phase transition separation method for fine-grained mineral inclusions, micron-grade fluid inclusions, and lattice-bound trace elements is notably opened for the first time. It is proposed that the research field as a monopolized industry would benefit by expounding the critical problems that occur during the preparation of high-purity quartz.

The tank house of Tamano refinery, that started its operation in January, 1972, was constructed incorporating the application of Periodic Reverse Current (P.R.C.) from the outset of design works. In 1973, the production of electrolytic copper came up to 8,000 mtpm, a sharp increase ds compared with the designed capacity of 7,000 mtpm, and successful operation has been achieved up to the present. P.R.C. has been employed for the purpose of raising productivity level and reducing copper inventories. Since there were various problems in P.R.C. application to such a large sized cathode as 1 m x 1 m, special attentions were paid to the following items: -Development of a unique bus bar to make an electrolytic current to each electrode as uniform as possible. -Improvement of circulating method of electrolyte. -Application of high-performance equipment to realize a uniform spacing between anode and cathode. Owing to these creative technical developments mentioned above, technical level for operation up to 350 amp per sq m of cathode current density has been established. The quality of electrolytic copper, which was a matter of interest, has been proved to be as excellent as those of conventional electrolysis products through a long term supply to the field of SCR and Dip forming where high levels in quality are required.

The Secretary of the Interior acting through the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey is authorized by the Strategic Materials (Public No. 117 - 76th Cong., Chapter 190 1st Sess.) to make investigation concerning essential minerals of which the quantities or grades obtainable from known domestic sources are inadequate. The Bureau of Mines, in carrying out its part of this program, may investigate deposits of such minerals in whatever manner may be necessary, in order to determine (1) the extent and quality of the are, (2) the most suitable method of mining and beneficiating it, and (3) the cost at which it may be produced. The essential objective in doing these things is to determine where and how supplies of minerals and metals of which domestic production is usually inadequate might be obtained in a national emergency, even though at higher cost than usual.

Sunshine Mining Co.'s Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the US. Maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and un-certain silver markets, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a two-year, $400,000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants. This saved the company about $650,000 per year.

"SummaryThe results of this investigation indicate that the gold in the cyanide tailing of refractory gold cyanides is occluded in fused •particles formed during roasting. This conclusion was reached following microscopic examination of calcines produced at various furnace temperatures with different atmospheres, and a •comparison with calcines produced by decomposing samples of completely sulphated concentrate under conditions such that the maximum particle temperature varied between 6•50°C. and 1,100°C. This comparison showed that the particle temperature during a normal roast may be several hundred degrees higher than the furnace atmosphere, or that the fusion is associated with a low melting (950°C.) eutectic mixture of FeO and FeS.Because of the unavoidable particle fusion during a furnace roast, and because low particle temperatures are essential for gold extraction by cyanidation, aqueous medium oxidation under high oxygen pressures was studied. Gold recovery from calcines produced by this means was over 98 •per cent •compared with a maximum of 80 per cent from furnace calcines.IntroductionMANY arsenical gold ores are called 'refractory' because much ' of the gold cannot be satisfactorily extracted by cyaniding the raw ore or concentrate. Even when such ores are roasted to oxidize .the iron and arsenic and 'release' the gold, often 10 to 25 per cent of the gold present is lost in the cyanide residues."

In this paper, the author will briefly discuss how the System works and how it can be put to use in automatic grinding circuit control. Throughout, detailed consideration will be given to the many factors that can significantly influence how successful a specific application is.

A fibra de juta é uma das fibras com grande potencial para ser aplicada como tecido reforçando compósitos poliméricos Este trabalho avaliou a resistência ao impacto para compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçado tecido de juta. Os corpos de prova foram fabricados com diferentes percentuais de tecido de juta: 0, 10, 20 e 30% em fração volumétrica. O tecido sido de juta foi embebedado com resina poliéster (estado líquido) e curado em temperatura ambiente durante 24 horas. As amostras foram ensaiadas utilizando o pêndulo impacto Izod and a superfície de fratura foi examinada utilizando o microscópio eletrônico de varredura. A resistência ao impacto Izod dos compósitos poliéster-juta cresceu de maneira linear com o aumento da quantidade de tecido de juta. Utilizando 30% de tecido de juta, foi possível obter 83,1 J/m enquanto o poliéster puro (0% de tecido) obteve 21,8 J/m. O bom desempenho do compósito poliéster-juta pode ser associado com a dificuldade de romper o compósito em virtude do tecido de juta, assim como, as trincas produzidas através da interface poliéster/tecido de juta que colaborou com o aumento na absorção de energia durante o ensaio de impacto Izod.

For over 50 years R W Miller & Co Pty Ltd operated old coal properties abandoned by former owners as uneconomic, some of which dated back to the last century. The companyÆs ability to survive with what were relatively poor quality coal resources required a small efficient management organisation. In 1970 R W Miller was involved in negotiations with other coal companies through coal sales contracts to develop private coal areas under the provisions of the old Coal Mining Act (1906) and these efforts led to the development of Lemington colliery. At the same time development of the Ironbark colliery holding near Newcastle commenced. In 1971, R W Miller approached the New South Wales Government for a resource replacement area to prospect for coal in the Upper Hunter Valley. Authorisation No 33 was finally granted on 30 September 1975, but the company found the area was inaccessible as most of the surface was owned by the Australian Army. Later R W Miller was granted Authorisation 66 of 2167.5 hectares at Mount Thorley near Singleton on 1 November 1976. The development of this coal mining project coincided with the second OPEC oil crisis in 1978 and a short-term boom for coal resources and the unrealistic expectations generated by the boom. This paper gives a broad outline of the development of the Mount Thorley project between 1976 to 1986 including the feasibility study and the many governmental and industrial delays that resulted in a three-year time overrun in the project development period.

THE property of Howey Gold Mines, Limited, is situated at Red Lake, Ontario, one hundred and seventy-five miles east of Winnipeg and eighty miles north of the Canadian National railway. The mine has been a continuous producer since April, 1930, and, at present writing, a total of 3,042,690 tons has been hoisted, giving a production of $6,422,858.55, for a grade of $2.32 per ton. From 1,064,477 tons mined during the past two years, however, the yield has been only $1,389,607.03, or $1.41 per ton (gold at $20.67). Present output is at the rate of about 1,470 tons. per day. THE ORE-BODY AND WALL-ROCK: The Howey ore-body is part of a quartz porphyry dyke, which has. intruded an area of greenstone. The dyke strikes north 65° east, and its dip varies from 85° to the south at the surface to practically vertical below the. 1,000-foot horizon. Both along the strike and on the dip, the width of the dyke varies from 25 to 200 feet, the widest portion occurring below the 1,000-foot level. To the east of the ore-body, the dyke increases in width and finally splits into tongues of porphyry enclosed in greenstone, diorite, and congloJ11erate. To the west, it passes into the adjoining property, its width at the boundary being 100 feet. The rock in the ore-body is hard to drill, but, because of numerous horizontal slip-planes, it breaks well when blasted. This characteristic makes it possible to break large breasts or benches with a relatively small number of holes. The ore broken in this manner is consequently quite coarse, a large part of it requiring secondary breaking.
