New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

The pelletizing process for low grade iron ores has undergone continual changes since its inception over twenty years ago. These changes have necessitated filtration equipment changes in order to produce a product suitable for balling. With modern techniques it is now possible to produce pellets of 68% Fe from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Low grade ores require fine grinding to liberate impurities This shift to finer grinds over the years has necessitated major changes in the filtration steps. Techniques are now available for producing suitable product from ores with Blaines as high as 3600 cm2/gram. This has been made possible by the development of high performance filters. Recent developments have reduced maintenance costs and produced higher production reliability. The paper discusses iron concentrate filtration from its beginning to present day design. It will be shown that the dewatering step prior to balling has gone through four generations of filters. Particular emphasis is placed upon hydraulic studies which have allowed today's optimum designs.

Today’s industrial technology offers to optimize and reutilize the resources available in terms of scum that remains after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. Vast reserves of low-grade coal exist and tons of mill scale are produced everyday after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. The present research work aimed to optimize the various parameters of solid-state reduction of mill scale using low-grade coal from Rajasthan, India. This study investigates the effect of reduction temperature (850–950 °C in steps of 50 °C), reduction time (60 to 180 min, in step of 60 min), mill scale size (800– 300 μm), and mill scale to coal ratio (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) on achievable metallic iron percentage and its metallization. A higher percentage of iron content is obtained at a lower particle size of 300 μm. The structural analysis is carried out on 300 μm mill scales using XRD analysis, which shows the percentage of iron is approximately 63%, and metallization above 80% can be obtained under the reduction temperature at 900 °C for 180 min, for 1:3 ratio (mill scale to coal ratio). The chemical composition of the mill scale is obtained using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and particle sizes as well as distribution of mill scale are determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elements present in the mill scale are also verified using EDS, which indicates the presence of a major portion of Fe, followed by Fe2O3, Si, and C, respectively.

The zinc pressure leach process developed by Sherritt Gordon, Ltd. permits the direct leaching of sulphide concentrates according to the overall reaction, ZnS +H,zS04 +402.+ZnS04+H20 +S0 The kinetics of the leach are affected by three rate controlling steps; ( l) oxygen mass transfer from the gas to the leach solution, (2) homogeneous oxidation of ferric ion to ferric ion by dissolved 011.ygen and (3) ferric ion leaching of zinc sulphide in the presence of a sulphur dispersing detergent (lignin sulphonic acid). Fundamental studies have been conducted to identify the factors that influence the kinetics of each individual rate controlling step. Oxygen mass transfer studies have been directed toward optimization of the agitator configuration for solids mixing and gas pumping from the atmosphere above the leach slurry. The rate of ferrous oxidation by molecular oxygen and the rate of zinc sulphide leaching by ferric ion have been studied over a wide range of temperature and solution compositions. The study of zinc sulphide leaching by ferric ion was supplemented by a series of interfacial tension measurements in the liquid sulphur - zinc sulphate solution system. The various kinetic studies have been summarized in terms of the importance of each rate to the performance of the process.

This Bureau of Mines study examines the acoustic vibrational spectra of rock slabs in the range of 0 to 5,000 Hz. The power spectra of so-called drummy rocks were found to be diagnostically enhanced in the range of 200 to 1,000 Hz. Comparison of the power in this band with that in a band from 3,000 to 3,500 Hz provides a quantitative measure of rock stability. A prototype field instrument was designed, constructed, and field-tested. This battery-powered instrument computes the power contained in the two frequency bands mentioned, compares the magnitude of these two quantities, and displays a number that is related to the detachment of the block tested. Field tests show that this instrument is capable of giving reliable measurements of block stability under conditions of noise and dust that would seriously degrade the accuracy of normal sounding techniques.

The demand for rare earth elements for everyday technology and applications has initiated much research into the extraction and recovery of these rare earth elements. An otherwise unknown group of minerals, eudialyte is a zircon silicate consisting of rare earth oxides (REO), contained in a unique mineral structure and represented by a complex chemical formula. Research into extraction and recovery of rare earth elements involves various beneficiation and hydrometallurgical techniques. The goal of beneficiation being to efficiently liberate and upgrade the REO content, followed by hydrometallurgy to extract the desired elements. This overview will discuss previous research on treating eudialyte group minerals via different mineral processing and extraction techniques.

This paper describes the process employed and the work undertaken to enable the surrender of the mine permit relating to the two tailings deposits at the abandoned Red Mountain Mine site near Rossland, BC. The first phase of the work undertaken was to provide urgent remedial work for protection of the environment, primarily through rehabilitation or replacement of surface water drainage systems. The second phase was to up-grade the water management systems to the appropriate level given their consequences of failure. The final phase of work is to ensure long term geotechnical stability of the facilities to the same level of risk. Establishment of a sustaining fund will facilitate long term monitoring and maintenance of the facilities.

Bituminous coal piled in heaps or bins frequently undergoes a process of spontaneous heating as the result of the absorption of oxygen. It seems probable that the first absorption of oxygen by coal which has not previously been exposed to the air may occur as a condensation or a combination of oxygen in some form which does not result in the production of carbon dioxide, but slow combustion soon begins. The absorption of oxygen is accompanied by an increase of temperature, and this by an increased rapidity of absorption; hence the dangerous condition proceeds from bad to worse, until the kindling point is reached, unless the process is interrupted. A dangerous rise of temperature can be prevented by excluding oxygen, by increasing the bulk of coal in proportion to its surface exposed, or by circulating enough air to dissipate the heat produced. The storage of coal, in practice, varies from almost complete exclusion of oxygen, by storing under water, to such freedom of access as exists when the coal is stored in open piles. Oxygen available for absorption by coal is supplied by the air in the interstices between lumps and by additional air which may enter the pile through circulation. The size of the coal largely affects both of these supplies; for if the fragments are small the spaces between them constitute a small percentage of the total volume, and little oxygen will be available unless the circulation of air brings in a fresh supply, while with large fragments the percentage is relatively large; circulation also is much easier through a pile of coarse lumps. In the case of lump coal, although a large amount of air may be present, the exposed surface is comparatively small and there is little opportunity for the absorption of oxygen to be so rapid as to cause dangerous heating. Attempts have been made to prevent heating by allowing a sufficient circulation of air to carry off the heat generated; obviously this method cannot be applied to fine sizes nor mixed sizes. When storing coal at the University of Illinois, an attempt has been made to use so much fine coal and to pack it so thoroughly as to prevent circulation of air, while also reducing the original air in the pile so as to prevent heating. "A sensitive colorimetric assay for detecting mucins and glycoproteins rich in 0-glycosidically linked saccharides is reported. The method combines the susceptibility of N-acetylgalactosamine terminating 0-glyco idically linked saccharides to P-elimination with the Morgan-Elson reaction for N-acetylhexosamines with free reducing ends. All mucin and mucin-type glycoproteins but none of the serum-type glycoproteins tested resulted in characteristic color production. All mucins tested gave linear responses in the range 5 to 200 ""g and the assay was also adapted to the microscale involving the use of 96-well microtiter plates. The microassay in which the volumes of samples and reagents are scaled down 2.5-fold was particularly useful in monitoring of mucins, in the presence of other glycoconjugates, in large numbers of samples obtained during fractionation procedures. Cesium chloride, cesium bromide, potassium thiocyanate, and various detergents do not interfere with the colorimetric determination. Guanidine hydrochloride, cesium triftuoroacetate, and B-mercap- . toethanol decreased color by 30 to 45%; however, the interference was not serious to prevent the use of the method for detection of mucins in their presence. The use of the method for the specific detection of mucin during fractionation by gel filtration and density gradient centrifugation of cystic fibrosis sputum samples is demonstrated. Mucins are an important class of biomacromolecules whose structure-function relationship is poorly understood (1,2). The investigations of mucins are hampered by difficulties in purifying these very large size molecules which appear to avidly bind other components of the mucus (3,4). One of the problems during purification is the specific detection of mucins. For example, during the various purification steps, the fractions containing mucins are typically detected by assaying for neutral sugars (hexoses) (5,6), for sialic acids (7), or for periodate oxidizable saccharide units (8). However, these methods are not entirely satisfactory because neutral sugars, sialic acids, and periodate-oxidizable saccharides are also components of other glycoconjugates. In addition, the neutral sugar and sialic acid measurements are also subject to interference from high levels of proteins and nucleic acids."

Increased awareness of a healthy work environment is common to all industries and the stone industry is no exception. The presence of operating diesel equipment, welding, stone production blasting, and silica dust in a working environment all contribute to air quality issues in underground stone mines. Particularly recognized is the exposure of workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent regulations call for a DPM standard of 160TC ug/m3 (TC = Total Carbon). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of these mines and consequently reduce the exposure of workers to harmful airborne contaminants. The results have shown that the ventilation of underground stone mines can be significantly enhanced using improved ventilation controls and techniques. Large-opening stone mines present specialized ventilation challenges because their entries are much larger than in other types of mines. Most stone mines have entries about 40 feet wide and up to 30 feet high, with bench areas that may extend even higher. These large entries present the positive opportunity to move large air quantities at relatively low mine fan pressures resulting in lower fan horsepower and reduced operating costs. However, the difficulty in ventilating large-opening mines is that even with large air volumes, the air velocity is often less than 100 feet/minute. Higher ventilation velocities more quickly dilute and remove contaminants from the face areas. Higher ventilation airflow velocities can be achieved by effective ventilation planning and proper choice of ventilation fans.

"The cost of occupational injuries and diseases in the mining industry in Quebec was estimated for the period of 2010 to 2012. The method used takes into account the financial and human costs assumed by employers, workers, and the community. To better direct research and prevention toward issues with the most significant consequences, the results are presented in various ranking tables, which stakeholders might find useful.RÉSUMÉ Le coût des accidents du travail et des maladies professionnelles dans l’industrie minière au Québec a été estimé pour la période 2010-2012. La méthode utilisée prend en compte les coûts financiers et humains endossés par les employeurs, les travailleurs et la communauté. Afin de mieux orienter les recherches et la prévention vers les problèmes ayant les plus graves conséquences, les résultats sont présentés dans divers tableaux de classement, qui seront d’une grande utilité aux parties prenantes. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is much safer today than it was 30 or 40 years ago, mainly due to a more qualified workforce, the use of automated equipment, and a corporate culture more focused on occupational health and safety (OHS); however, the number and the severity of occupational injuries and diseases continue to make this industry one of the most hazardous. In the province of Quebec, the mining industry accounts for approximately 0.4% of paid workers but is the source of 4% of fatal work accidents. It is, therefore, important to continue the prevention efforts already underway in the mining industry.The difficult global economy, which has affected the mining industry in the last few years, is an opportunity to reaffirm that sound management of OHS can have a positive impact on companies’ productivity and profitability. Occupational injuries and diseases are costly for the companies concerned and for society as a whole. Reducing their occurrence makes it possible to reduce not only the size of workers’ compensation board contributions but also several other financial and human costs."

"Since 1984, there have been 39 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM). In January 2015, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) finalized a regulation to require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines (MSHA, 2015). Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHAapproved proximity detection systems are commercially available.NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system (Schiffbauer, 2002) and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs (DuCarme et al. 2013; Jobes et al. 2012; Carr, DuCarme et al. 2013 and Carr, Li et al. 2013). In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate (Li, Carr et al. 2013 and Li, Jobes et al. 2012) and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators (Carr et al. 2010 and Jobes, et al. 2012).To evaluate the performance of proximity detection systems implemented in industry, NIOSH researchers conducted tests in 2013 on three systems installed on CMMs at three underground mines in Illinois and West Virginia. The results of these tests indicated that, while generally consistent performance was observed, there were opportunities for improving performance. These results were presented at the 2014 SME Annual Meeting (Carr, Lutz, et al. 2014). Since that time, second-generation systems have become available to the industry and are becoming more commonly used.Beginning in early 2014, NIOSH researchers conducted underground testing of these secondgeneration proximity detection systems installed on CMMs. Five tests were conducted on four installations of second-generation proximity detection systems, with one installation being tested twice. The tests were conducted at mines located in Illinois, Virginia and Kentucky with seam heights ranging from 137 cm (54 in.) to 213 cm (84 in.). These tests were conducted using the same test protocol used during first-generation testing, which is summarized in the following section."

Graphite blocks are currently used in the concentrate - slag zone in primary PGM smelters, and can possibly be extended to the matte zone. This project evaluates the interaction between synthetic matte and graphite blocks on a laboratory scale. Static crucible tests were performed where graphite crucibles (prepared from standard and high-grade graphite) were filled with synthetic matte (27.7 per cent S ? 46.1 per cent Fe ? 17.0 per cent Ni ? 9.2 per cent Cu) and heated to 1550°C for different time periods (1?5 days). Matte penetration was evaluated using a SEM, while graphite dissolution was evaluated by measuring the carbon content of the matte with a LECO carbon analyser. Matte penetrated into standard grade graphite up to approximately 2 mm, while matte infiltration into the high grade graphite was limited to the immediate hot face. The saturation solubility of graphite in the synthetic matte at 1550°C was 0.43 per cent. Copper, iron, nickel, and sulphur were detected in an accretion that formed in the water-cooled part of the furnace. This accretion consists of mainly Cu-S and Cu-Fe-S based phases.

Real gross national produce (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.0% in the fourth quarter (table 1). The restrained quarterly growth rate was the slowest in 2 years, and was substantially slower than the 2.5 % rate of the previous quarter. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the summer drought reduced the fourth-quarter growth rate by 1.1 percentage points. A growing trade deficit and a reduction in business investment were the key economic factors curtailing growth. The trade deficit widened by $6.8 billion, reflecting both a surge of imports and a slowing of exports. Business investment declined 3.7%, mainly as a result of a slowdown in computer sales. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 3.8% for 1988, the fastest in 4 years, despite the drought. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, real growth measured 2.7%. Increased exports and business spending for plant and equipment accounted for much of the 1988 GNP growth. Employment continued to grow as the manufacturing sector added 414,000 new workers (table 2). Of these, the primary metals industry added 26,000 workers, and the clay, glass, and stone industry added 10,000. The civilian unemployment rate remained low throughout 1988, fluctuating between 5.3% and 5.4% during the last quarter.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). Coalbed discontinuities historically have been hazardous to mining as well as obstructions to efficient production. An effective means of mapping these features is needed in order to plan safe and efficient mine development. This Bureau of Mines report discusses the use of surface seismic techniques for this purpose. At a southwestern Pennsylvania mine, a system of coalbed discontinu-ities (paleochannels) was accurately mapped by the Bureau of Mines using borehole log methods and underground observation. This site was chosen to test the value of a high-resolution surface seismic reflection on technique for coalbed mapping. A statistical study performed at this mine indicated that the probability of accurately delineating this paleochannel system with conventional borehole methods was remote. A total of 1.47 miles of high-resolution seismic survey, comprised of four seismic profiles, was conducted in known and suspected coalbed discontinuity areas. Several test holes were drilled on the seismic lines in order to evaluate the interpretations. It was found, based on these and other existing boreholes, that it is possible to predict these dis-continuities. Paleochannel washouts were correctly predicted in several instances but in other instances were either incorrectly predicted or not predicted in areas of known discontinuities.
