The Bureau of Mines has investigated the effect of refractory oxide additions, introduced in soluble form, on the refractory properties of 42-, 58-, and 70-pct-A1203 brick. Brick having porosities ranging from 12 to 16 pct were impregnated with solutions containing chrome, chrome-iron, zirconium, calcium, magnesium, cobalt, nickel, tin, and manganese ions. Additions of some of these ions provided dramatic improvements to such properties as hot modulus of rupture, hot load, and particularly slag resistance. These improvements can be related to reduction of porosity, amorphous grain boundary phases, formation of more refractory bond phases, and reduction of the wettability of Al203-containing refractories by metallurgical slags. Fifty-eight-percent-AI203 brick, impregnated with chrome, showed hot modulus of rupture, hot load, and slag resistance two to five times better than those of untreated 70-pct-AI203 brick. This could result in reducing the Nation's dependence on imported refractory-grade bauxite generally required for high-A1203 brick, as domestic alumina resouces could be used to produce the improved refractories.

Hydrogen sulfide was decomposed to elemental sulfur in an electrical discharge. With He, N., or Ar diluents, a threshold voltage between 1 and 3 kV was required for the decomposition reaction to occur in a laboratory ozonizer. Above the threshold voltage, the HAS decomposition rate increased with increasing voltage, but the increase was more pronounced with argon diluent than with either nitrogen or helium. In common with other reactions in an electrical discharge, the B2S decomposition decreased with increasing temperature in the range of -410 to +61° C. The reaction did not appear to be rate-controlled by a solid-gas sorption step because the introduction of activated charcoal into the electrical discharge zone did not significantly affect the decomposition yield. In the presence of polymeric chlorofluoro-carbon oil, 90 pct conversion of the 3 pct H2S in helium was obtained at 14 kV, 60 Hz, a 2-mm electrode gap, and a gas-residence time greater than 1 min. Under the same experimental conditions in the absence of oil, the conversion was only about 50 pct.

While not well established, there is evidence that the mining industry is encumbered by several work-related fatigue risk factors. Compared to other industries, mine workers are more likely to report inadequate sleep and work longer hours per day. Given these observations, there is a critical need to identify effective ways to intervene, manage, and mitigate mine worker fatigue and sleepiness when present. One barrier to this is confusion around the similarities and differences between fatigue and sleepiness, which can result in these terms being treated as interchangeable regardless of context and make it difficult to assess and mitigate safety risk.

"Since the beginning of the petroleum industry in 1839, up to within two or three years ago, these has been a dearch of engineers who have had the fundamental technical training also sufficient practical experience so that they could compete with practical men. Need for Technical Investigations in Industry: As in the early stages of the mining industry, the petroleum industry has been rather slow in realizing the need for technical assistance and investigators in the development and production of oil lands. The rapid increase in consumption, however, during the past few years has accentuated this need more than anything else could have done. When it is realized that our production cannot longer keep pace with the demand, it is easily understood why it is imperative that be instituted which will tend to conserve and prolong the supply of oil from the fields now known. It is interesting to note from preliminary production figure given cut by the U. S. Geological Survey, for the year 1919, that the United States produced about 430,000,000 barrels, an increase of 22,000,000 or 6 per cent over 1918 production and also there was imported, chiefly from Mexico, a little over 52,000,000 barrels, making a total of 430,000,000 barrels, to satisfy the trade demand in the United States of which almost 6,000,000 barrels was exported. Stocks were not materially increased.Other significant facts regarding our petroleum industry, are that just recently the U. S. Shipping Board in soliciting bids for 24,000,000 barrels of fad oil to meet prospective needs, received bids for only 1,500,000 barrels at prizes ranging from 75 to 90 per cent higher than was paid last year. One large company on the Pacific Coast has stopped its export trade, and has notified consumers,of gas-engine distillate that they will no longer make deliveries of this product. This will materially affect the farmer, in many instances, through his use of the truck and tractor."

Two graphical techniques which are commonly used to assess batch separations are analysed in terms of reaction kinetics to provide a more powerful method of evaluation. An alternative and more general approach, based on the selection and application of suitable efficiency criteria, is also presented. The method proposed distinguishes between selection and collection efficiency in flotation and can be used to estimate the degree of liberation in the feed. New solid-state electrochemical sensors 1;.1sing Li2SO4-Ag2SO4 electrolytes have been developed to measure SO2 and/or SO3 in gas mixtures. Silver embedded in part of the electrolyte is used as the reference electrode. Although single-phase electrolyte sensors yield accurate results for one to two days, a two-phase electrolyte cell exhibits excellent long-term chemical stability. For example, stable and accurate potent iometric responses have been obtained over a six mo.nth period. The. advantages of the two-phase electrolyte ( 23 mol% Ay 2SO4 ) cell include excellent mechanical strength on temperature cycling and an insensitivity to compositional variations in the electrolyte and to temperature fluctuations. Experimental tests have shown excell.ent results in SO2-air. mixtures with the SO2 concentration ranging from 3 to 10,000 ppm (vol). However, the SO2 concentration range was limited by a lack of standard gas mixtures, and our sensor cells can be used to measure S02 concentrations significantly less than or larger than our experimental range. Results also indicate that the presence of significant concentrations of CO2 and H2O in the gas mixture has no effect on the sensor response. Thus the two-phase electrolyte ( 23 mol% Ag2S04) sensor has exceptional selectivity, reliability and long-term chemical and mechanical stability.

In October 2013 JSW Steel decided to place an order to Primetals Technologies Austria (former Siemens VAI Metals Technologies) for the installation of a comprehensive Level 2 process optimization system for more than 20 existing production facilities of various suppliers. For SMS-I new L2 systems are provided for two hot metal pretreatment stations, three hot metal desulphurization stations, three ladle furnaces, two 1-strand slab casters, a ladle tracking system as well as a shop supervisory system. Additionally the existing L2 system for one 1-strand slab caster is being upgraded in the course of the project. In SMS-II new L2 systems for the 7 hot metal desulphurization stations, 4 ladle furnaces, 1 new RH vacuum degasser, ladle tracking system and a shop supervisory system are supplied. Despite of the challenging time schedule the commissioning of the single facilities started within less than 12 month after contract effectiveness. The installed Level 2 process optimization systems together with the achieved results are described in this paper.

Water-swelling fluormicas and fluormontmorillonoids were synthesized and described. They were found predominantly in the system Mg0 - MgF2 - Si02, with varying amounts of Li+ or Na+, Some water-swelling synthetic minerals were prepared with only strontium or lead in the twelvefold position, Water- swelling compounds containing either K+ or Ba+ were not found. The synthesized water-swelling products were shown by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and chemical analysis to be typically two-silica-layer, platy compounds, Except for the complete substitution of fluoride for hydroxyl, the compounds were similar to the natural micas or montmorillonites. The stability and properties of the compounds were further established by electrodialysis, by differential thermal analysis, and by anion and cation exchange methods. Fluoride in the interlayer positions was nonexchangeable except through decomposition of the product. Exchanging the sodium or the lithium of the synthetic fluormicas or fluormontmorillonoids with potassium ion, particularly those derived from KOH provided a product from which a completely inorganic paper of extraordinary flexibility was fabricated. This paper had excellent mechanical and electrical properties except for water adsorption and a high power factor. Neither of these problems was solved during this investigation. However, papers with dielectric strength from 1,500 to 5,000 volts per mil were readily fabricated, particularly from the lithium containing fluormicas or fluormontmorill onoids.

Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

Thallium is a very minor element found in lead ores. It's behaviour during lead smelting has recently become of much greater interest due to the effects it had on the health of waste heat boiler maintenance contractors at a Canadian smelter. In this paper the behaviour of thallium in both traditional and direct lead smelting processes will be examined using computational thermodynamics techniques. Yazawa and his coworkers have made extensive use of computational thermodynamics to examine and illustrate pyrometallurgical processes. It has been shown that thallium behaviour during smelting is strongly influenced by the extent of oxidation of the lead concentrate and by the presence or absence of chlorine in the charge. The condensation behaviour of thallium species in the waste gas handling system was also modelled and it has been confirmed thallium-rich deposits can form at the high temperatures prevailing in waste heat boilers.

Gravity gold circuits have an important part in reducing operating costs and maximising recovery in modern gold plants where coarse gold is present in the ore body. The design and selection of equipment has a vital part in the overall effectiveness of the gravity gold circuit. There are a number of associated factors that need to be taken into consideration when selecting the most suitable equipment for gravity gold circuits including occupational health and safety, security and labour requirements. This paper is a case study that outlines the validation behind the design, selection of equipment and subsequent benefits of the recent upgrade of the gravity circuit at the Marvel Loch gold mine with the main component to the upgrade being the installation of a Consep Acacia Reactor. Since the upgrade there has been a significant increase in gravity recovery, which has reduced the amount of gold reporting to the leaching circuit therefore reducing reagent consumption and overall operating costs. There has been an increase in overall gold recovery and therefore increased gold production. The benefits to occupational health and safety include the removal of toxic gases being released in the gold room during the previous practice of gold concentrate calcination and the removal of the arsenic and nickel from the gold doré, which poses a risk during refining. Manual handling and security has improved as there is no physical contact with gold concentrates during the automated process using the Acacia reactor. The total time for gold room personnel working in the gold room has also reduced from around six hours per day to less than one hour per day.With the continuing development of low grade gold deposits, there will be an increase in demand for low capital, high recovery gravity gold circuits that can significantly increase overall production while reducing operating costs.

"During the past year, the Pittsburgh experiment station of the Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods for the quantitative estimation of carbon monoxide in blood. This work was necessary because reliable methods of analysis are of the greatest importance in the bureau's research work on prevention and treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning among workers in mines and metallurgical plants. Two of the methods considered involve color comparisons. In one of these methods, differences in tint can be noted fairly readily, while in the other, they are much more difficult to detect. The latter, however, is otherwise considerably simpler. It was decided, therefore, in studying the possibilities of this second method, to use the most sensitive eyes in the laboratory force.Preliminary trials.The method under investigation was the Haldane carmine determination of carbon monoxide in blood. The plain oxyhamoglobin of the blood in dilute solution is a pale straw color, when exposed to carbon monoxide it becomes a cherry pink. In the analysis dilute indigo carmine is added to oxyhsmoglobin until the solution matches in tint the carbon monoxide hemoglobin. The eye wanted, then, was the one most sensitive to faint pinks. But just how to select the analyst was not clear At first the Williams test scale, used in the Navy, was considered, but on con¬sultation with Dr. L. L. Thurston, bead of the Department of Psychology at Carnegie Institute of Technology, the following procedure was adopted.Instead of standard tests made up of all colors, only those occurring in the analysis were used. Solutions were prepared of the two hemoglobins, from which twenty-four different pairs were made up and placed in test tubes like those expected to be used in the analysis. One of each pair differed from the other in percentage of carbon monoxide hemoglobin by amounts varying from 2-1/2 per cent to 20 per cent. Each pair was compared in a box built in our own shop. This was 20 inches long and 5 inches square in cross section. One end was covered with ground glass. Just inside this glass cover were provided two slots, each the width of the test tubes used. The tubes to be compared were dropped into these slots through two holes in the top of the box. The device was placed before a window away from the sun, and so arranged that the light conditions were the same on each slit or opening. The person to be tested was seated before the box, and as the two tubes were placed before him side by side, he marked whether A (left) or B (right) contained the more cherry pink. This procedure was continued till he had compared all the pairs."

Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedw ell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1% (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2% improvement in the circuit underflow density. The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil® dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary to solution neutralisation improvements.

Arsenic bearing minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13), which may associate with major copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and bomite (Cu2FeS4), usually report to the copper concentrate in conventional flotation due to their similar flotation properties. Arsenic in a copper concentrate causes environmental problems and also problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical process. Voltammetric studies were carried out to investigate the oxidation characteristics of enargite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bomite. Contact angle measurements and micro-flotation tests were conducted to examine the flotation characteristics of enargite and chalcopyrite under controlled pulp potentials. Selective flotation of enargite from chalcopyrite under varied pulp potentials was conducted to investigate the feasibility of arsenic removal from a copper concentrate. The test results indicate that the non-arsenic bearing copper minerals ( chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) were easier to oxidise than arsenic bearing minerals ( enargite and tennantite) in an alkaline solution. Enargite floated well at a potential as high as +0.45 V vs. SCE while chalcopyrite was completely depressed at a potential higher than +0.43 V vs. SCE. Selective flotation revealed that enargite can be successfully removed from chalcopyrite through controlling the pulp potential at +0.30 ~ +0.50 V vs. SCE.

LOOKING back over the industrial and commercial progress of the United States during the last half century the outstanding influence has been the growth of the use of the fluid fuels, petroleum and natural gas. At the turn of the century these fuels supplied only 8 per cent of the energy requirements of the nation. Last year nearly 45 per cent of our heat and power supply were derived from these fuels. These figures are merely statistical reflections of the fundamental change in our national economy which has affected, in so many amazing ways, the life of this generation. The factors which have caused this change are still operative. The trend which has thus been established still continues and growth in the use of these fuels is, in all probability, still well below the peak, both for this country and for other parts of the world. Two great wars have not essentially changed this basic trend; if anything they have served to accelerate it. World War II did not alone increase our requirements for liquid fuels; it demonstrated the absolute essentially of petroleum resources to our national security. Petroleum is no longer just an important factor in our national standard of living; it is the most important single element in our national defence-

Introduction The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, the country's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in northeast Colombia, about 145 km (90 miles) from the coast (Fig. 1). In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port. This forms a modern, efficient, and integrated system. The project is embodied in a 50-50 association contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally. Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of the partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2 to 3 Gt or 2.2 to 3.3 billion st) of high quality bituminous coal. Exports began in the first quarter of 1985, at modest levels through what is called Early Coal Facilities. The permanent coal handling system began operation in February 1986. Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) in 1989. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth in production into the 1990s is feasible. Importance of transportation The success of a new coal export venture, such as Cerrejon, depends heavily on efficient transportation. In the international coal industry, overland and ocean transport can in some cases account for 40% to 50% of the final value of the product. Many coals, such as western US subbituminous coals, cannot reach export markets at all because of their low heat content and great distance from export markets. By the same token, low-grade resources are often commercially attractive for local markets even in the face of competition with much higher quality coals from distant sources. This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. Results of research on the hydrothermal precipitation of zirconium oxide from the Bureau of Mines' zirconyl chloride-sulfate strip liquors indicate that nuclear grade material can be prepared by this process. Greater than 99% of the zirconium value can be precipitated at 250-260°C in short (5-10 minutes) reaction time without consumption of acid value of the liquor. Thus, precipitation of zirconium dioxide on a continuous basis, i.e., the zirconium dioxide is precipitated in a continuous mode of operation by pumping the strip liquor through a heated pressurized reactor and recycle of the acidic (spent) liquor to the process stage are favored. The results of accompanying studies of liquod/solid separation, product washing and dewatering, product purity, and chlorination of the product are presented and discussed.
