"Fluidized bed technology has been used in the industry for almost 100 years. To fully understand the process hundreds if not thousands of researchers were and are involved in finding the way to predict the behavior of the solids when subjected to the flow of media through them and the conditions of the solids in the fluidized state. The difficulties in predicting the behavior of solids in the fluidized state stem from the complexity and abnormality of the parameters related to the solid particles. Theoretical calculations can in some degree account for some of them. Particle size distribution, their shape, density, moisture content and physical and chemical reaction that may exist in the fluidized bed reactor play an extremely important role and influence the behavior of the fluidized bed. This paper focuses on the practical examples of the fluid bed equipment and the use of different conditions to process various products.IntroductionEach process application has its own unique requirements and the designers of the equipment must take into consideration specific process requirements, specific properties of the material to be processed (both physical and chemical), and physical and chemical reactions/changes that are taking place in the reactor (heat and mass exchange, chemical reactions, isomorphic change etc.). Each individual piece of equipment must also satisfy specific requirements/ preferences of the client that will operate and maintain the equipment. Those often represent greater challenges than the process on its own, and are equally important to the satisfactory operation of the plant. That includes aspects like location of the equipment, environmental effects, and expected life of the equipment, process control, access, maintenance, and many others.Over the period of time a great deal of research, both theoretical and practical have been carried out and the results of that work are available for equipment designers. For the simple applications that information is usually sufficient and the selection of a suitable solution is relatively simple. In many instances, the available information is not sufficient, and often specialized test work needs to be conducted to obtain additional data. In many cases a pilot installation is built in which the required process is tested. Only then the commercial equipment is designed. The following deal with specific installations that were designed to satisfy specific requirements. In some instances, additional problems were discovered during the commissioning of the equipment that required on site modification. The continuous monitoring of the equipment that was supplied to the various clients allowed us to further develop and improve our designs."

Two blast furnaces, one a. commercial furnace and the other the Bureau of Mines experimental furnace, were successfully operated with extremely low slag volumes. The lowest slag rate obtained on the industrial furnace was 335 pounds per ton of metal. Using the same burden materials a 245-pound slag volume was achieved on the furnace. The coke rate saving and increase in productivity resulting from lowered slag rates are discussed as well as the factors limiting a low slag practice.

This paper summarizes the analyses of ventilation layouts for mines that experience both spontaneous combustion. The major focus is placed on the longwall coal mine layouts used in several countries. Each of the different layouts is modeled in the form of a ventilation network. The gob of a longwall panel is the most critical location for the occurrence of spontaneous combustion. Airflow leakage paths inside the gob are simulated by using a simplified grid-like network. Computer simulations with this model indicates that the W-system of ventilation is most effective in minimizing air leakage into the gob. Homer, the U-system of ventilation, with pressure balancing behind the face support line, is also found promising for longwall panels. The magnitude of air leakage into the gob is observed to change with the advance or retreat of bee, thus requiring appropriate balancing of pressure to maintain the leakage at a minimum.

From March 1944 to July 1945 the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines made magnetometer surveys of some of the principal iron ore deposits of the Iron Springs district, Iron County, Utah. The district comprises a belt about 23 miles long and 3 miles wide. Most of the large ore bodies are found as pods of replacement ore within a favorable limestone bed lying at the margins of three separate igneous intrusions in the district The magnetic surveys were confined chiefly to this geologically favorable zone at the margins. The iron ore is a mixture of magnetite and hematite. The magnetite content of the ore ranges from 14 to 58 percent. Magnetic anomalies of 1,250 gammas or more were usually found over the near-surface ore bodies. About 62,000 magnetometer stations were taken over a total traverse distance of about 300 miles. Outcropping ore bodies were surveyed to determine, insofar as was possible from the magnetic data, their probable length, width, depth, extent, strike, dip, and tonnage. Geologically favorable areas where no ore is exposed were explored in an endeavor to find new ore bodies. Favorable locations were determined for exploratory diamond drilling, both in areas of exposed ore bodies and in areas of newly discovered magnetic anomalies. Forty-five separate magnetic anomalies that indicate the possible existence of ore bodies were observed. Of these, 13 anomalies are caused by outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size. Five are caused by non-outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size which were discovered, in whole or in part, as a result of the geophysical surveys. Of the remaining anomalies, which lie in virtually un-tested areas where few or no ore bodies are exposed, six probably are caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, nine are possibly caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, and six are probably caused by unexposed magnetite veins of some small commercial importance,

The instrumentation, monitoring, and prediction of a major slope failure at the Chuquicamata mine are described. In December 1967, pre-existing tension cracks on the south end of the east wall of the Chquicamata mine began to open. Various forms of instrumentation were installed for continuous monitoring. These systems included tension crack stakes, crack extensometers, linear extensometers, tape and transit lines, sliding wire contacts, and a seismograph. From the information obtained, the failure date was accurately predicted some five weeks before failure, enabling the mine to reroute truck and rail access; hence, causing a minimal mine shutdown of two and one-half days and preventing any injuries to persons or damage to equipment. The shape and form of the sliding mass are analyzed, as are the possible modes of failure.

Pillar collapses are events that due to their severe consequences can be classified as high risk. The design of pillars in underground room-and-pillar operations should migrate to risk-based design approaches. The authors of this work proposed a risk-based pillar design methodology that integrates stochastic discrete element modeling for pillar strength estimation, and stochastic finite volume modeling (FVM) for stress estimation. This paper focuses on the stochastic FVM component for stress estimation. The mining and geomechanical aspects of a case study mine (CSM) are described and pillar stresses are estimated by using three approaches: (1) analytical solutions, (2) 2D finite element modeling, and (3) 3D finite volume modeling. This operation extracts a 30° dipping deposit, which makes current underground stone mine design guidelines inapplicable for this CSM. This work compares results from each stress estimation approach and discusses uses the point estimate method as a simplified stochastic approach to evaluate the effect of rock mass elastic properties variability on pillar stress distribution. Results from this work show that the three estimation approaches lead to different estimations, possibly, due to the wide range of assumptions each estimation approach considers. It was also determined that the horizontal to vertical stress ratio has a significant impact on pillar stress magnitude. Therefore, it is recommended to perform in situ stress measurements, or assume worst-case-scenario values to account and reduce uncertainty due to this parameter. The stochastic stress estimation approach used in this paper provides results that can integrate a risk-based pillar design framework.

Conveyor belts are a critical component in tunneling projects. This paper reviews current design considerations for conveyor belts. Rubber compounding differences to meet local fire resistance regulations or certain cover characteristics such as higher abrasion resistance or low carbon footprint rubbers for applications are reviewed. Evaluation of fabric belts, steel cable belts and the benefits of each carcass design for a particular use is also examined to help with proper carcass selection to decrease downtime from unexpected failures. Finally, this paper takes a look at some of the differences when working in metric versus imperial units.

MMAJ, a govemmental organization in Japan, has carried out a 4 year project for the development of the decontamination and metals recovering technology for the fly ashes from municipal waste incineration. Heavy metals (zinc, lead and copper) are recovered as raw materials for the non-ferrous metals production, without formation of any waste materials to be disposed. More than 500 thousands tonnes a year of fly ashes generation from the municipal waste incineration has been one of the main social issues in Japan, because most of them need to be disposed to the registered areas after decontamination, and occupy 5% of the municipal wastes disposed. The segregation, flotation and chemical process are applied to the treatment of the primary fly ash from municipal waste incineration, and MF (Mitsui-type blast furnace) Process after the chlorine removal to the secondary fly ash. The main results of experiments are -About 90% of heavy metals, zinc, lead and copper, can be recovered from the primary and the secondary fly ashes to the products for the non-ferrous metals production. -Both of the leaching residue from the primary fly ash treatment and the slag from the secondary fly ash treatment can be used as a raw material for the cement production, meaning that the decontamination technology for the ashes without the landfill has been established. -Dioxins in the primary ash can be decomposed satisfactorily, and the dioxins content in the segregation furnace gas is less than O.lng-TEQ/Nm3 without any gas cleaning system

THE thermal analysis of a metal or alloy is ordinarily made with the aid of heating and cooling curves, in which transitions are indicated by the rapid changes in curvature that accompany .changes in the rate of heat absorption or evolution. Analysis by the method that depends on the change in thermal expansivity is not customary, partly, at least, because of the difficulties involved in making the necessary measurements. However, under certain circumstances, the dilatometric method of analysis may possess advantages over the thermometric method that will justify the additional trouble required. The addition of 1 per cent. of zinc to an alloy has been found to produce, upon the volume changes that take place during transition, effects that suggest the possibility of using the dilatometric method of thermal analysis as a rather sensitive means of obtaining chemical information. Although the illustrations presented in this paper are drawn from data obtained during an investigation of dental amalgams, similar phenomena can doubtless be observed with other alloys. Some of the results found during an investigation made in 19171 have been confirmed by data on the thermal expansivity of amalgams published by Souder and Peters of the Bureau of Standards in reporting tests of dental materials.2 Although the Bureau of. Standards made experiments for the purpose of discovering effects of including zinc as one of the constituents of a dental alloy-a matter much discussed in dental literature but without the presentation of reliable experimental evidence to support the views of ;either side-the reports of the test made by the Bureau give the impression that certain striking phenomena associated with the presence of zinc were not noticed. Among such phenomena are those connected with the conditions that determine whether or not a specimen of amalgam becomes covered with droplets from which crystals develop.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY BY "thermochemical factors" we refer to those variables which affect the net heat which must be put into the bath in order to make a heat of steel from any given set of charge materials. This is admittedly only one phase of the production rate problem. The whole problem includes also consideration of rate of charging, flame radiation intensity, rate of optimum fuel input obtainable without undue damage to the furnace structure and any variations in conditions such as stirring, slag volume or viscosity which affect the rate at which heat can flow down and away from those exposed surfaces where the heat is first received from the flame. Because a given type of charge in a shop is often considered as being nearly constant in both physical and chemical characteristics from one heat to another, and because such a state of affairs may be thought of as resulting in a reasonably constant net heat requirement, this requirement is usually neglected as an invariable, inevitable matter, about which nothing can be done. With normally variable charge, and variable percentages of limestone and cold pig, however, the net heat requirement can be subject to very appreciable change; it may also be affected by such things as the currently popular procedure of blowing oxygen into the bath, To bring the general problem of production rate into better perspective, therefore, it seems worthwhile to try to evaluate the net bath heat requirement and the amount by which it may change through variation in different factors. Because our calculated values of net heat are admittedly uncertain, we have tried to check them in part by statistical data on actual production rates over rather large groups of commercial heats. The results of calculation of net heat requirements in a wide range of actual commercial practices may first be summarized briefly. We find a wide range between the extremes of different practices, as would be expected, with duplex practice (essentially blown metal plus hot metal) having essentially a zero net heat requirement, an all-cold charge practice somewhat over 1 million Btu per ton of steel and a high hot metal practice about 0.75 million Btu per ton. Over the commercial range of scrap plus hot metal practice, increasing the percentage of hot metal from 40 to 78 pct, with other factors nearly constant, decreased the net heat by only some 5-10 pct, The net heat is increased by about 1.2 pct for each I pct of the metallic charge present as cold pig. Calculated values of oxygen supplied by air varied from about 25 up to 60 lb per ton of steel, and in a 60 pct hot metal practice, an increase from 32 to 52 lb oxygen from air decreased the calculated net heat from 0.88 to 0.74 million Btu per ton. Use of pure cold oxygen to substitute for about one half of the total charge ore (about 28 lb oxygen replacing 145 lb ore per ton of steel) decreased the

Climax Molybdenum Company, a Division of American Metals Climax, Inc., operated a hydrometallurgical plant* at Climax, Colorado from August 1966 through August 1968 to recover molybdenum from a mixed oxide and sulfide ore. The ore treated for this addition to the existing plant contained sufficient Molybdenite values to be mined for Molybdenite recovery alone, so that the oxidized molybdenum recovery could be regarded as a byproduct operation. Climax is located at an elevation of 11,300 feet. All process equipment, except thickeners, was enclosed in buildings. Annual snowfall is approximately 250 inches per year. Paved highways and rail service to the plant are maintained and kept open all year. Most of the employees live in the town of Leadville, which is approximately twelve miles from the plant site. The sulfide flotation plant handles 40,000 to 45,000 tons per day of ore. The mine is one of the world's largest underground mines.

Various Continuous Mechanized Shaft Sinking concepts, equipment and projects are also reviewed in this report. Their significance relates to designs and systems related to Shaft Boring. Shaft Boring is increasingly a method considered for the excavation of deep and increasingly large diameter shafts for mines in hard rock. Many methods have been used as an alternative for D&B Shaft Sinking.

Diminishing returns in management's fight to lower manufacturing expenses have added luster to savings that can be achieved in delivered costs through creative management of the distribution function. This is especially true for companies engaged in the production of bulk commodities, for which transport costs may represent 25 to 50% or more of total delivered price, A. E. Cascino, vice president of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, recently gave an example of why top management in his firm is concerned with distribution: "The price of a ton of phosphate rock, f.o.b. mine, is about $7. The cost of warehousing, freight, and handling frequently totals an additional $11 . . . . If one of our competitors . . . discovers a way in which he can cut his distribution costs by $3, we're dead! Even if we wanted to offset our competitor's more efficient means of shipping with reduced f.o.b. price for our product-we don't have that much profit margin . . . ." In a special report on the revolution now occurring in transportation of goods, Business Week stated in its September 24 issue: "Moving and storing goods on their way from mine and mill through various sub-assemblies to their final markets costs anywhere from $50 billion to $75 billion a year- $100 billion if paperwork costs are included.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 23rd Annual National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The four inductees are: William Wheeler Coleman who served 46 years, from 1911 to 1957, as president and chairman of the company that is now Bucyrus International of South Milwaukee, WI, a world leader in the manufacture of surface and underground mining equipment. Dr. Allen Van Heyl, Jr., an economic geologist who served with the U.S. Geological Survey for nearly 50 years beginning in 1943. He studied more of the nation?s mineral deposits than most could begin to imagine. Arthur Lakes contributed enormously to the geological and mining sciences in the western United States as a geologist, teacher, writer and artist over a period of more than four decades beginning in 1869. The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, is named for him. Samuel Calvin McLanahan, through his inventive genius, changed the direction of his family?s company from that of a foundry to a leading manufacturer of minerals processing equipment to become today?s McLanahan

This chapter presents an overview of fatal and nonfatal injuries reported to MSHA during 1986-1995. Reportable injuries follow the criteria for reporting specified in 30 CFR 50. These criteria are listed in appendix A. The data used for these analyses came from the MSHA accident, injury, and illness data closeout files for the years 1986-1995. The MSHA data are described in appendix A and methods used in data analysis in appendix B. There may be slight discrepancies between the figures presented here and other presentations of MSHA data for the following reasons: (1) injuries to nonemployees have been excluded from analysis; and (2) injuries identified by MSHA after the files were closed out are not included. Within the MSHA data, there are differences in reporting requirements for operators and contractors. Contractors are required to report only those injuries that occur during certain categories of work (described in appendix A). For this reason, data on injuries among employees of operators and contractors in the MSHA database should not be considered directly comparable. As discussed in the "Introduction," the MSHA data on fatal injuries differ from the CFOI data (chapter 1) because of varying definitions used for the mining industry. As compared to the CFOI data, MSHA data exclude injuries that occurred off of mine property and include injuries occurring at mills and processing plants on mine property. Tables 4-1 through 4-9 and figure 4-1 provide comparisons of injury frequencies and rates among the commodities. These comparisons are followed by sections 4A through 4E, which provide more detailed tables and figures for each commodity separately. The method used to calculate injury rates is described in appendix B. Since denominator data for occupations (lob titles) were available for 1986 only, estimates of rates by occupation for the entire 10 year period are based on extrapolation from 1986 data. For this reason, estimates of injury by occupation should be interpreted with caution. Fatal Injuries A total of 1,078 fatal on-the-job injuries were reported to MSHA during the 10-year period 1986- 1995. The average annual fatal injury rate for all commodities combined during this period was 30.9 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. Mine operators accounted for 908 (84%) of the fatalities and had an average annual fatal injury rate of 28.2 per 100,000. While mine contractors comprised only 16% (n = 170) of the total number of fatalities, their average annual fatal injury rate was 2.3 times higher than that of mine operators (65.0 per 100,000). Table 4-1 presents the number and rates of fatal injuries by commodity for operators and contractors. Contractors in metal, nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel are grouped together, since MSHA data on employment were not available for rate calculations for these commodities separately. The highest average annual fatality rate for the period, 66.5 per 100,000, occurred among metal and nonmetallic mineral mining contractors, followed closely by coal contractors (63.1 per 100,000). Among mine operators, the highest average annual fatal injury rate was in coal (38.9 per 100,000); the lowest was in nonmetal (14.3 per 100,000). Table 4-2 shows the average annual fatal injury rate by type of operation for each commodity for mine operators only. Of commodities with underground mines, all except stone had higher fatality rates at underground than at surface operations of these mines. The highest fatality rate for any operation occurred in surface operations at underground stone mines (124.5 fatal injuries per 100,000 workers). Stone had the second highest fatality rate for underground operations at underground mines (77.9 per 100,000). The highest rate for underground operations at underground mines occurred in metal (87.6 per 100,000). Table 4-3 shows the number and rate of fatal injuries by U.S. Bureau of the Census occupational groups (described in appendix D) for the 10 occupation-commodity groups with the highest fatal injury rates. These data should be interpreted with caution because the denominator used in calculating the rates was based on an extrapolation from data for the year 1986 only, as described in appendix B. Extractive occupations are represented in this group for three commodities: coal, metal, and sand and gravel. Construction trades are included for coal, sand and gravel, and nonmetal. The distribution of fatal injuries by commodity and work activity for mine operators is presented in table 4-4. A description of the work activity categories is in appendix C. Overall, the leading work activity at the time of injury was using or operating tools and machinery (26.4%) followed by constructing, repairing, and cleaning (24.0%), vehicular operations (18.8%), and materials handling (12.6%). The distribution varied by commodity. The largest percentage of fatal injuries occurred while operating tools and machinery in both coal and stone; during vehicular operations in metal; and during constructing, repairing, and cleaning activities in nonmetal and sand and gravel. Table 4-5 shows the distribution of fatal injuries by commodity and MSHA accident classification for mine operators. A description of the MSHA accident classifications appears in appendix E. Historically the insurance industryÆs involvement in any project has been relatively late in the process. Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authorsÆ experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: personnel; environment; general management; compliance û legislation, systems, protocols; asset management; change management; financial impacts to the organisation; products/services; service delivery; and technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.

"Innovation in the minerals industry has been lagging behind comparable industries like oil and gas. An incremental innovation culture that tolerates long lead times between invention and adoption has been exacerbated by a research grant structure that inhibits radical idea generation. Entrepreneurs who can make the link between ore source, technology and finance will cause a shift in innovation culture and open up substantial opportunities in the minerals industry of the future. By extrapolating existing trends in technology within and outside mineral processing, a crystal ball vision of future innovation is shaped with the aim to lower energy and water demand, reduce CO2 emissions, decrease operating and capital costs, reduce environmental impact, and secure a social licence to operate. Advances in nanotechnology, advanced materials and biotechnology will impact mineral processing, but the initiative for technology transfer must come from mineral processors. Laminates of graphene oxide can offer efficient filtration and separation media, while microfluidic devices will be used for desalination, solvent extraction and analysis. Substantial progress is expected on benign lixiviants and separation agents, such as nanoscale supramolecular hosts that can serve as high-capacity, selective and recyclable ligands and sorbents, and solid aminobiphosphonate-based adsorbents. Radical ideas for the recovery of precious metals from non-assayable ores and the generation of energy above unity will be adopted in selected minerals projects. In-situ mining in which microbes generate lixiviants at mineral surfaces will simplify processing circuits. Specific ores will be subjected to microwave processing and electropulse liberation to enhance recovery. Ultrafine grinding using devices of low energy consumption will be done mainly dry, followed by dry separation. New flotation cells will remove efficiently either coarse particles or ultra-fine particles, with mineral surfaces being modified not just by new reagents but also by selective microbes. Innovation in mineral processing indeed has a bright future."

A contractor-manufactured 4.75m (15'-7") diameter EPB shield excavated a 115m (375 ft) long tunnel under the San Antonio River as part of the Salado Creek to Dos Rios Pipeline Interconnect Project in San Antonio, Texas. Lignite, limestone concretions, and sandstone in the face of the tunnel required the use of disc cutters. Less than 7.6m (25 ft) of sand and gravel hydraulically connected the top of the tunnel to the channel of the river. Fully lagged steel ribs with filter fabric were used for initial ground support and water control. This and other contractor manufactured TBMs in the 1.2 to 4.75m (4 to 16 ft) range are presented with descriptions of the jobsites, equipment, performances, and problems.
