A dynamic model is used to represent the single-stage closed grinding mill circuit at Mogalakwena North Concentrator. The circuit consists of a ball mill closed by a hydrocyclone. The circuit is modelled according to a semi-mechanistic non-linear dynamic model available in literature. An algebraic routine is used to fit model parameters to steady-state process data. Preliminary validation results against dynamic data indicate that the model is capable of capturing the main dynamic trends of the plant. Since classical system identification techniques proved insufficient to produce accurate models; the non-linear model can be used as a reliable source for model-predictive controller design. Due to the unbalanced top coal drawing process, the recovery ratio is low, and the equipment stability is poor in the longwall top coal caving mining (LTCC) with an inclined seam. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM). The basic procedure is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Taking the panel no. 8103 in Beixinyao mine as the research object, the characteristics of drawing body shape, particle movement trace, and variation of recovery ratio are investigated by using Particle Flow Code. Furthermore, the effect of mining-caving ratio on the top coal drawing law under DGCM is revealed by the simulation results, and compared with the single-opening sequence caving method (SSCM) and the doubleopenings sequence caving method, advantages of DGCM are determined in inclined seams. The results show that the drawing body can be divided into the left and the right under DGCM. Specifically, the drawn top coal particles in the left are from the upper part of this support, that in the right are from the lower part of next support, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the drawing body shape are more significant when the mining-caving ratio is relatively small. In addition, with increasing mining-caving ratio, the recovery ratio of the panel both increases gradually underDGCMand SSCM.When the miningcaving ratio is less than 1:1, the recovery ratio of DGCM is obviously higher than that of SSCM, indicating that DGCM can greatly improve the recovery ratio. While when the mining-caving ratio is larger than 1:1, the recovery ratio of two caving methods is basically equal; however, the advancing time is significantly shortened under DGCM. This study are of great significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC with an inclined seam.

The time and amplitude statistics necessary to adequately describe electromagnetic (FM) noise in mines are illustrated through computer software techniques. They are 1) Allan Variance Analyses (AVA), 2) Interpulse Spacing Distributions (ISD), 3) Pulse Duration Distributions (PDD), 4) Average Crossing Rates (ACR), and S) Amplitude Probability Distributions (APD). These statistics are illustrated using data taken from a rather large store of raw analog data recorded in operational mines. The curves generated for the illustrations characterize the noise environment in the mines from which the corresponding data were taken, and should aid in the design of reliable communication systems for such mines.

"Scientific, engineering, and biomedical research teams synergystically developed major topical research areas in the Respirable Dust Center. Descriptions of their interactions and resulting accomplishments demonstrate how cooperative research within and among these study groups benefits the overall respirable dust research and practical application needs of the mineral industries.The development of a state-of-the-art small animal inhalation exposure facility suitable for studies of fresh and aged coal mine dust, a major goal of this research group, will contribute toward the GTCRD goal of advancing the understanding of causative mechanisms for the occupation-related lung impairments and the airway diseases of mine and mill workers. Such understanding includes improved definition of the role of various aspects of the lung environment (e.g., surfactant and the mucociliary system) in the disposition and toxicity of respirable dust, comprehensive characterization of the role of the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) and its secretory products on the development of dust-related lung disorders, and an expanded search for methods to reduce the toxicity of respirable dust both before and after it enters the lung. The National Academy of Sciences has recommended, in Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines, that respirable dust research should include study of the behavioral and constitutional factors affecting individual susceptibility to workers' pneumoconiosis occupational disease and the development of methods for detecting the potential onset of pneumoconiosis earlier and more conclusively than can be done using X-ray methods. These recommendations have guided the research group in its goals of establishing and disseminating a scientific protocol for standardizing the inhalation testing for all research objectives within the Generic Center which involve small animal exposures and implementing the infrastructure necessary to make lung tissues obtained during inhalation studies available to all researchers within the Generic Center."

"Lately various voltametric methods have gained increased attention as an analytic tool in hydrometallurgy. Voltammograms with mercury drop electrodes or glassy carbon electrodes provide information about the electrocrystallization of cathodic deposits and allow calculation of kinetic data by means of characteristic parameters like the peak potential and peak current and their variation with the voltage scanning rate.Cyclic voltammograms are also suitable for identification of reaction sequences. Voltammograms with carbon paste electroactive electrodes containing metal sulphide additions reveal information about the dissolution behavior. The stripping voltammetry can be applied to analyze metal ions and organic additives (e. g., thiourea) in extreme low concentration. Typical application of the various methods studied with microcomputer controlled measurement system are explained by examples selected from copper hydrometallurgy.IntroductionThe use of electroanalytical methods in metallurgical process control can be dated back to the starting period of industrial copper refining, when the deposition of the metal ions was followed electro-gravimetrically by weighing the electrode with deposits (1). The principles of metal deposition and dissolution have not changed but the methods to follow these phenomena were subjected to noticeable developments and especially the introduction of polarographic investigations by Heyrowsky (2) has greatly contributed to the progress in electro-analysis. A review about the fundamental work on the electrochemical kinetics in earlier time is compiled in a monograph of Vetter (2). With the steady improvements in the instrumental techniques, it is nowadays possible to apply several current and potential modulations for measurements with improved selectivity and sensibility. There is however, still a lack in theoretical interpretation of the data obtained. "The development of certain mines in the East Tintic mining district, Utah, has been hindered considerably by the presence in the rock strata of heavy irrespirable gases which at times flood the lowest working places, as well as by abnormally high rock temperatures in the lower horizons. A study of these features was completed in the spring of this year, and the information obtained is summarized here.Heavy gases.Only four mines have been affected to date by the presence of heavy gas, and only one of these is producing lead-silver ores in quantity. These four embrace a territory extending about three miles north and south and about two miles east and west, while both within and fringing on this territory are a number of prospects which have not been affected.Thus far no fatalities have resulted from gas inflows, but a number of men have been temporarily overcome, and a few have had narrow escapes from death by suffocation. That the record is not more serious is mainly due to the fact that the gas inflow, as a rule, is relatively slow, mining operations have been quite carefully conducted, and the presence and extent of a gas inflow can be easily determined by its extinguishing action on the flame of miners' lights.When first encountered, about 1910, gas inflows occasioned much lost time. In some months the lost time averaged as much as ten days, while one mine cites for a certain month a maximum of 26 days lost out of a possible 28 working days. With improvements in mechanical ventilation and the passing of time, interference with work from the presence of gas has gradually lessened. During the last few winters, the main trouble has been with the mines being flooded with gas overnight when fans were not operated, although men have been driven out of the lowest development openings several times each winter with fans operating. At present, the main danger is in the lowest development openings having only one exit, wherein men might be trapped and possibly suffocated during an unusual and extremely rapid inflow of gas, or during an ordinary inflow, should the one source of power for the fan be disabled."

This is the second of two interrelated studies of waterborne transportation. The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. All the principal mineral-industry imports and exports of the gulf coast are mentioned in the report, including metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuel products, The gulf coast foreign trade in mineral industry products was determined to be composed of a small number of commodities.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon's pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon's pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (15%) of Professor Gershon's pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

Around the world many potash mines experience brine inflow problems. The presence of brine in underground excavations may induce structural and stability problems. A study has been carried out to simulate the effect of brine on the performance of pillar support. The testing program consisted of loading potash specimens in a creep frame, and simulating inflows by continuously pumping brine into an experimental cell. Brine temperatures and load conditions were varied to simulate several mining and inflow conditions. Specimens were fitted with acoustic emission transducers to monitor energy emissions during an eight-hour test duration. Samples of brine were also collected to provide K+ and Na+ concentration data necessary for an accurate assessment of the dissolution process. Test results indicated that dissolution rates are highly dependent on brine temperature and load conditions. Loads approaching 50% UCS tend to generate very high rates of energy emissions, often leading to the failure of the simulated pillars. This study demonstrated that acoustic emission could be effectively used for predicting the performance of pillars when exposed to inflow brine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated a light-scattering technique for discriminating between spherical and nonspherical particles. This evaluation was a three-step procedure. The first step required collecting light-scattering data for a variety of particles. This was accomplished with a particle analyzer called the DAWN-A. The DAWN-A measured the scattered light intensities of individual particles at a forward scattering angle of 40°. These DAWN-A measurements of individual particles are called scattering signatures by the Bureau researchers. The second step in this evaluation was to calculate a sphericity index number using the scattering signatures produced by the DAWN-A. The sphericity index number can range from 0 to 1. A calculated sphericity index of 1 would show that based on the intensity of scattered light, the particle was a perfect sphere. The third and final step of this evaluation was the comparison of the calculated sphericity indices of the various particles. Comparing these indices made it possible to discriminate between the nearly spherical waterdrops and the nonspherical coal and rock dust particles.

"The mining of coal in thick and inclined seams is difficult, and there are only a few countries in the world that are really interested in the problems associated with their exploitation. In France a considerable amount of investment has been made in the mechanization of systems appropriate for such conditions.For seams inclined up to 50 degrees, of normal thickness, a new system was introduced in 1967. It consists of a longwall advancing to the rise with walking props, a shearer and hydraulic backfill. During the first two years the panel productivity was an average of 25 TN/MS, and they foresee the possibility of reaching an average of 30 TN/MS.A system for thick beds, both horizontal and inclined, is in p•rocess of being mechanized. In 1969 they started with a method consisting of a longwall in a footwall slice, or sub-level drifts with walking props, and caving and drawing up to a height of 20 m of coal. Recent experiments with a shearer have produced panel productivities between 9 and 11 TN /MS, and there is hope that with experience an average of 16 TN/MS will be obtained.In 1964 a method was initiated for beds inclined from 60 to 90 degrees, based on a mechanical cutter designed by the collieries in Lorraine. An overhand slice of 4.2 m in height is taken with a drum cutter mounted on the end of a boom. Hydraulic fill is placed at the completion of a slice. The face productivity, which has been from 13-20 TN /MS, can be perhaps increased to an average of 22 TN/MS. For those companies with important reserves in inclined and thick seams, these French systems may be worth the trouble of examining in some detail."

Probably one of the most significant departures in tunneling practice is the introduction of Diesel locomotives far haulage (Diesel trucks have been used for some time). The fallacy of the belief that they do not generate carbon monoxide or toxic gases and can be used indiscriminately has been proved by the authors through observation for several years of atmospheric conditions surrounding the use of Diesel engines in tunnels. Diesel locomotives haves been introduced in tunnel haulage for reasons other than safety or health. Except to the extent that they replace trolleys, with their danger of causing electrocutions, modern Diesel locomotives do not increase safety Or remove any ordinary hazards to safety or health. In fact, they create such hazards, the extent of which is limited entirely by the carbon monoxide-content level set, method of ventilation, adequacy of the measures.

The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. In this study, solvent extraction of zirconium by using triphenylphosphine oxide as extractant has been investigated. The results showed that extraction of zirconium by triphenylphosphine oxides in nitric acid and hydrochloric acid media were negligible. Extraction of zirconium in acetic acid media with concentration of 0.01~0.2 M has been studied and the results showed that the maximum percent of zirconium extraction was 40% in acid acetic with concentration of 0.01 M. By addition complexing agents such as potassium thiocyanate with the concentration of 0.01~0.2 M zirconium extraction increased up to 86% in 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate. By addition of sodium salicylate with concentration of 0.01 M and in pH=2.5, the maximum extraction of 96% was achieved. The striping of zirconium from organic phase can be carried out by 0.5 M solution of sulfuric acid.

The dynamics of explosive detonations are understood; however recreating a real-world, to-scale scenario is costly. The use of a shock-tunnel allows testing to be done on a smaller scale, with the simulated effect of a large explosion. Analyzing explosive waveforms using this method can greatly reduce cost in testing blast-resistant products, such as anti-terrorism devices, mine safety products, and military equipment. The purpose of this project is to better the understanding of how the waveform dynamics of an explosive detonated within a shock-tunnel differ from those in an open-air arena test.

The possibility of diamonds occurring in Canada was first raised by W. H. Hobbs in 1899, who concluded: "that the apex of the fan of diamond distribution probably lies somewhere in the strip of the territory bordering James Bay on the east." This was based on the occurrence of diamonds in surficial sediments at various locations south of the Great Lakes. There are two recorded discoveries of drift diamonds in Ontario: (a) the Peterborough Diamond, 33 carats in size, poorly documented and found sometime before 1920;and (b) the Jarvi Diamond, 0.255 carat, found during 1971 in Sheraton Township near Timmins . Both discoveries were in surficial sediments and their source(s) have not been located. During 1960, Selco Exploration Company Ltd. started a heavy-mineral sample program of river gravels in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario. This was continued by Canadian Rock Company Ltd. (1962-1963) and the Ontario Division of Mines (1973). The surveys discovered the presence of kimberlite minerals in gravel samples from streams draining the Moose River Basin. A total of 53 pyrope grains, four magnesian ilmenites and one grain of chrome diopside were identified from 32 sample locations. A study of the distribution of these minerals suggested the kimberlite source rocks to be located along the north margin or within the Kapuskasing gravity "high" in the area immediately south of James Bay. The Jarvi Diamond, found on an esker east of Timmins, could well have originated from this area. During 1965, an esker was sampled by the Geological Survey of Canada, and the results attracted attention to the area south of Lake Abitibi. At 9 out of 34 sites sampled along the Munro esker, Lee recorded the presence of pyrope garnets and very minor chrome diopside.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines determined the effect of common sulfide minerals on the corrosion rates of various types of ferrous alloy grinding media. Data obtained from this study will aid in determining the contribution of any electrochemical reactions between sulfide minerals and grinding media to the total grinding media consumption. Common sulfide minerals used in this study were chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite. In the presence of oxygen, chalcopyrite was found to increase the corrosion rate, galena was found to decrease the corrosion rate, and the effect of sphalerite was dependent upon the type of grinding media. Possible electrochemical reactions of these minerals in the presence of grinding media are suggested.

The cadmium and cyanide are main poisonous components in cyanide electroplating cadmium waste water of an electroplating plant in Shenyang. The content of cadmium is about 26 mg/L and the content of cyanide is about 11.782 mg/L in this waste water. The main form of cadmium and cyanide are ions which are Cd2+and CN?. Because the cadmium and cyanide exceeded the standard seriously, the waste water must be disposed before it discharges. The microbiological method of treating heavy metals in wastewater has many advantages. For example, it has a fast adsorption velocity, high processing efficiency, wide range of pH and temperature, few invest, low running cost, no the second pollution and so on. At the same time, the CN? could be degradated by some microbiology. The physical nature, the chemical nature of Bacillus mucilaginosus, the adsorbing condition and adsorbing regular of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium in the wastewater are studied by using Bacillus mucilaginosus as adsorbent removing cadmium from electroplating wastewater. The experimental results show that the adsorbing rate of cadmium is over 92%, under the room temperature(about 25?), stiring revolution in adsorption being 800 r/min for 30 min, pH being 5 , the bacteria being cultured after 5d with the biomass of Bacillus mucilaginosus 40g/L (wet weight). The mechanism in biosorption process of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium is analyzed and discussed by TEM , Zeta potential,and infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results showed, the chemical involving is main adsorbing form, while electrostatic attraction, ions exchange, hydrogen bonding and Van Der Waals force are concerned cooperatively. ?NH2 ?, ?C=O?, ?C=O?NH?CH2, ?CH3, ?OH are main adsorbing groups. At the same time, the floatablity of removing cyanide by Bacillus mucilaginosus is explored.

THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.
