Phenol was discovered in coal tar by Runge (1)1/ in 1834 and was isolated (2) in 1841 as pure phenol by distilling the tar, extracting with caustic soda, acidifying the extract, and fractionating the tar acids. Later, o-cresol was isolated (3) through careful fractional distillation of the tar-acid mixture. The m-and p-cresols distilled within a boiling range of about 1.50 c. and had to be separated by other means. Raschig (4) fractionated the tar-acid mixture to obtain pure o-cresol, sulfonated the mixture of m-and p-cresols, and treated the cresol-sulfonic acids with superheated steam at 1200 to 1300 c. to hydrolyze the m-cresol sulfonic acid, the p-isomer was not affected at that temperature. He also attempted to make use of the different crystallizabilities of the m-and p-cresol sulfonic acids (5). When treated with sodium bisulfate and sodium pyro-sulfate at 100° to 110° C. or with sulfuric acid (90/0) at 20° C., only the m-cresol was sulfonated (6). Hoffman-La Roche (7) treated the meta-para mixture with concentrated sulfuric acid at 40° to 100° C., when m-cresol and part of the p-cresol was sulfonated, and precipitated the m-cresol sulfonic add by diluting with water. The same sort of separation may be carried out by means of 80 percent sulfuric acid at 35° C. and 35 mm pressure (8).

This first section of case histories of mineral discoveries, Vol. 3, covers some of the milestones in porphyry copper and skam exploration successes. It was during the era of these discoveries that large, complex exploration departments emerged as permanent adjuncts of large mining companies. The discoveries helped shape how and where exploration activity was conducted. Probably the most important factor in exploration success is management. Few management people are mentioned in this section or in any exploration history, yet the distinction between success and failure ultimately rested with the decisions they made. One of the most successful groups was initiated by Roger Straus and Herbert Brownell when they sought to make Asarco into an important metal producer. Relying on Clem Pollock and L.H. (Bill) Hart to identify and push worthwhile projects, the Asarco management remade the company. Asarco will benefit from exploration successes com- pounded by that team for years to come. Duval is an example of a management that decided to add metal production to its industrial minerals output. When Page Morris was president, that company opened three major porphyry copper mines and became an important factor in metals. Under the Monis management team, Duval became a leader in exploration. At the other end of the scale are managements that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and by so doing changed the character of their companies in other ways.

Sao Bento Mlnerai;;ao Mine (SBM), located 100 kms northwest of Belo Horlzante, Brazil, was commissioned In 1987t1l to produce 185 kg per month of gold from 240 tpd of refractory sulphide flotation concentrate. The concentrate Is processed by a Sherrill Gordon design pressure oxidation circuit followed by conventional CIL gold recovery process (Flgur .. J). The original plant design foresaw expansion to 480 tpd, and In this regard the acidic effluent neutralisation, CIL and carbon circuits were designed for future expansion to treat the higher tonnage. The pressure oxidation section was sized for 240 tpd with the Intention to double the Installed plant equipment to provide 480 tpd capacity when required. This decision was based In part on the novelty of pressure oxidation to treat refractory sulphide concentrates in 1984 when the process design was finalised. General Mining, Metals & Minerals (Pty) Ltd (GENMIN), has been actively Involved for the past 30 years in the development of bacterial process for the oxidation of refractory gold concentrates; the results of this development program have provided the registered process BIOx®. The successful Implementation of BIOx® technology for treatment of refractory gold concentrates at GENMIN's Fairview Mine In October 1986t2l, as well as the substantial experience accumulated in laboratory and pilot testing of some 40 other sulphide concentrates, Justified reconsideration of the oxidation process best suited to provide the Incremental sulphide oxidation capacity planned for SBM.

IN order to make clear the reasons for the basic importance of petroleum and natural gas in the world today, and the problems faced by our scientists and technologists in using efficiently these great natural resources and finding possible replacements for them, it will be necessary to present a brief discussion of hydrocarbon chemistry The most important use of petroleum products is as fuel, particularly for the various forms of the internal-combustion engine There are, of course, hundreds of thousands of chemical compounds that give off heat when they burn, that is, when they combine with the oxygen of the air If a capable chemist were assigned the problem of finding the ideal volatile liquid fuel for use in an engine, he would probably begin by referring to the tables that give the heats of combustion of the chemical elements Of all the ninety-odd elements, hydrogen shows up with by far the highest heat of combustion-about 52,000 British thermal units per pound Unfortunately, however, hydrogen is a very light gas, which can be liquefied only at very low temperatures To burn it as fuel in an automobile would require a balloon about as big as the car to hold the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline, or, the hydrogen could be compressed in heavy steel cylinders, but -this would require about 125 pounds of steel per pound of hydrogen. A laboratory study was carried out to evaluate the effect of oxygen and lead nitrate on the recovery of gold by cyanidation of a free milling gold ore, which contains 0.4 % copper as chalcopyrite. Efficient gold extraction is achieved only under specific conditions. The recovery of gold was increased from less than 90% to up to 98% by addition of lead nitrate. In the pre-leaching, the kinetics of oxidation of soluble sulphides are not an accurate indication for the length of the treatment. Even though the consumption of cyanide was reduced due to the inhibition of the dissolution of chalcopyrite by increasing additions of lead nitrate, cyanide consumption had to the held above 1.85 kg/t to maintain good recovery of gold. The continued addition of lead nitrate above 300 git had no impact on the recovery of gold. It was also found that the addition of lead nitrate at the start of cyanidation gave the same performance as when added during pre-leaching. The addition of oxygen increased the recovery of gold by 1.5%. The concentration ofNaCN had to be maintained in the range of700 mg/L because of the high concentration of copper in solution. The recovery of gold dropped significantly when the average NaCN concentration fell below 640 mg/L. Application of the findings of the laboratory study at the industrial scale led to improved plant performance.

A thermal oil-recovery experiment was conducted in the Venango First sand, Goodwill Hill oilfield, Warren County, Pa., about 10 miles northeast of Titusville. The Quaker State Oil Refining Corp., Bradford, Pa., performed the experiment with assistance from Sinclair Research, Inc., Tulsa, Okla., and the Federal Bureau of Mines. The Goodwill Hill field was discovered in 1885. Primary-production oper- ations continued until 1930 when an air-gas injection project, which is still in operation, was started. At the location of the combustion experiment, the reservoir is 400 feet deep and 30 feet thick, with wide permeability and porosity variations. The crude oil is typical Pennsylvania Grade paraffin- base oil with a gravity of 43.9° API and a viscosity of 4.55 cp at 60° F. The well pattern for the experiment consisted of 5 producing wells, enclosing an area of 1.28 acres, and a central ignition-injection well. An air-natural gas mixture was ignited in the ignition well on July 29, 1961. Ignition was followed by injection of air and natural gas at various rates. The experiment was suspended January 5, 1962, when it became evident that economic oil production could not be achieved. There was no conclusive evidence that self-sustained combustion was achieved or that combustion increased oil and water production. A slight increase in liquid production was attributed to stripping action caused by the air-injection rates, which were higher than those normally used during air-gas injection.

Unusual circumstances may require that a longwall retreat into or through a previously driven room. The operation can be completed successfully, but there have been a number of spectacular failures. To help determine what factors contribute to such failures, a comprehensive international database of 131 case histories has been compiled. The cases include six failures where major rock falls occurred in front of the shields, and seven even more serious failures involving major overburden weighting. The case studies suggest two types of room failure mechanism. The first is a roof fall type failure caused by loading of the immediate roof at the face as the fender or remnant longwall panel narrows. The second is an overburden weighting type failure caused by the inability of the roof to bridge the recovery room and face area, and affecting rockwell above the immediate roof. The data indicate that the roof fall type of failure is less likely when intensive roof reinforcement (bolts, cables and trusses) is employed together with higher-capacity shields. The overburden weighting failures, in contrast, occurred when the roof was weak and little standing support was used. Weighting failures were not greatly affected by the density of roof reinforcement. In one of the overburden weighting cases, in a Pittsburgh coal bed mine, stress cell, convergence, bolt load and extensometer data have been used to analyze the failure in detail. Bracken Gold Mine ceased mining operations during February 1993. The clean-up of the gold plant, which had already commenced in September 1992, was completed in January 1994. The mine had been in production since early in 1962 but, because of a decreasing ore reserve, increasing working costs, and a relatively low gold price, closure had become inevitable. The closure had been under consideration since August 1983, when the first estimate was made regarding the amount of gold that could be recovered from the clean-up operations. Until that stage, it had been accepted that Bracken would conform to the commonly accepted idea that 0.25% of the total gold produced by the plant would be recovered during the clean-up operation. This idea was dispelled when the initial estimates indicated that the gold recovery would vary between 0.049 and 0.095%. The actual figure realized was 0.036%, showing that there is no generalforl1ula for the calculation of the amount of gold to be recovered from such clean-up operations. During the clean-up operation, Bracken became an unexpected contributor to the State's Reconstruction and Development Programme by having al the mine and plant buildings purchased and converted into a community development centre. This shortene4 the time available for the clean-up, and several of the buildings remained intact. However, the foundations and sub-soils had been sampled extensively, and it is considered that no recoverable gold was left behind.

Power ultrasound may be applied to enhancing the processing of minerals. The enhanced performance is achieved through the very localised high-energy release at the mineral surface from the collapse of cavitation bubbles produced by power ultrasound. This gives rise to two effects: initially, the rapid cleaning of mineral surfaces û of oxidation products and coatings of fine adhering gangue minerals û and the attenuation of the boundary layer at the mineral surface during leaching, which allows fresh leachant to contact the surface more readily. Work carried out at CSIRO in conjunction with Tiwest Joint Venture has demonstrated that it is feasible to apply ultrasound to the leaching process in order to enhance the removal of contaminating minerals. When applied to the production of synthetic rutile from reduced ilmenite produced by the Becher process, the use of ultrasound proved beneficial to both the aeration and the final acid leach process. The effect of ultrasound was less marked in the case of the aeration process, once the method of introducing and dispersing the air was optimised. In the subsequent acid leaching step of the Becher process it was found that the application of power ultrasound could reduce leaching time to about one quarter of the time required when only agitation was employed. Projected capital and operating costs, based on currently available commercial equipment, are also presented, and indicate that the use of ultrasound is commercially as well as technically feasible.

(written discussion *).-Ad-vantage will be taken of this occasion to mention briefly a form of double potentiometer which has been used at the Bureau of Standards for about 2 1/2 yr. in calibrating thermocouples. The calibrations referred to are those made by comparison to standard couples. In order to insure equality of temperature between the couples, the junctions are fused together; consideration of fundamental principles will show that this introduces no error. Two separate potentiometers are used, one connected to each thermocouple, and each potentiometer is provided with a reflecting galvanometer. The two spots of light are reflected on to a single scale, the galvanometers being set in such a position that the spots coincide on the scale at a point marked zero when the circuits are open or when the potentiometers are balanced. By setting one potentiometer to a desired value and adjusting the other so that both spots pass across the scale together as the temperature rises or falls, simultaneous readings are obtained. By making observations first with a rising temperature and then with a falling temperature, the rates of rise and fall being approximately equal, and taking the means of the results found, several minor errors such as those clue to differences in the time lags of the two systems, etc., are eliminated or greatly reduced. What is experience worth? Representatives from the Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Societies discussed the question as part of the 1970 Annual AIME Meeting held in Denver, Colo. the week of February 15. Petroleum engineer-consultant, Michel T. Halbouty of Houston, Tex. offered his own clarification of present-day employer-employee relationships in engineering as a whole. "Longevity does not equal experience on the job. Further, when employees are considering salary increases and promotions, job performance is considered all the time; experience two- thirds of the time and length of employment one- half the time." He added, "worth is really what the employee can get for it and experience is essential to survival." Halbouty also noted that salary and responsibility is a function of man's value to his company and is about "as discrediting as grey hair." As far as the engineer is concerned, he reported, the company's ability to pay is, in large measure, not considered. From the company's viewpoint, however, the employee is expected to learn his first year on the job. His second year, he is expected to make his presence felt, Should he require three years to orient himself he might soon be looking for another job. The petroleum engineer pointed out that when the employee wants to know why the salary scale tends to plateau off in later years, most employers react by recognizing that employees "flatten themselves rather than the company flattening them."

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) ZINC is, as is well known, very brittle at a temperature of about 210° C. (410° F.), and may then be readily pulverized in a mortar. By sifting it may be obtained of uniform grain. I have been accustomed to prepare products passing through 40, 60, and 80-mesh sieves, and also by bolting through a fine handkerchief. The principal analytical uses to which I have hitherto applied this material are to the reduction of iron directly from the ore by heating it with the pulverized zinc, and the reduction of ferric to ferrous compounds in solution. In the first case the pulverized ore, 0.5 gram or less, is intimately mixed with about ten times its weight of the pulverized zinc (the finer the zinc the better), in a porcelain crucible, and this mixture is covered with about the same amount of zinc. The crucible is then heated at the top of the flame of a Bunsen burner, at a dull red heat, for about ten minutes. The crucible should not be covered. When cool, the crucible, with its contents, is placed in a flask treated with hot dilute sulphuric acid, and brought quickly to a boil. The zinc and reduced iron are dissolved in a few minutes and the flask is then tightly corked and allowed to cool. When cool, the iron is directly titrated by potassium permanganate.

Mechanisation has been a predominant theme of the past 50 years in the mining industry, particularly underground mining. As the level of technology employed has increased, the anticipated productivity gains have not been realised and the differences are not explained by the demand for higher standards of safety and security. Now, mining costs are so high and productivity so low that the resultant return on investment for many Canadian operations has fallen to levels considered unacceptable in a competitive capital market. Simply continuing technological development cannot reverse this trend and its financial implications. The focus on technological development has distracted us from some basic truths. Systems that are more complex are more likely to fail and cost-effective processes depend on the continuity of productive activity and the flow of material. When putting these facts together, it becomes clear that in a system that has fixed external conditions, the single most crucial issue is the effective management of the operational cycle. By its nature, technology focuses our attention on what gets done and how it gets done, while the crucial issue is the increasingly longer periods in the operational cycle when nothing productive is being done. What is required is to match the level of technological complexity to the fixed system conditions, which are virtually unchangeable. This paper looks at the overall system and objectives and attempts to present an appropriate level of technology for the Canadian mining industry, now and in the foreseeable future.

Many problems have surfaced in our economy during this decade, and the mining industry has certainly had its share: huge capital outlays for environmental controls, volatile markets, double-digit inflation, inadequate capital markets, political uncertainties-plus shortages of energy, manpower, supplies, and equipment. All these and other problems have left their visible marks on the economy of our industry. Solutions are slow in coming; perhaps, in some instances, there are no right answers. However, it appears that many companies are using joint ventures to an increasing extent in efforts to reach partial solutions to some of these problems. A joint venture does present an economic alternative that should be examined-especially when trying to answer questions arising within the current economic context. The dictionary defines "venture" as an undertaking involving chance, risk, or danger. The word was originally applied to hazardous undertakings involving delivery of cargoes to distant ports and subsequent disposition of the merchandise, but it is now applied to any project of limited scope and temporary duration. When two or more entities join in such a project, it becomes a joint venture, and this is the context in which I have used the term. Joint ventures may be formed for exploration, for development of a new ore body, or for expansion of an existing operation. Each requires different approaches for negotiating and drafting the agreement governing the conduct of the joint venture.

In the thiosulfate gold leaching process, thiosulfate is used to complex gold following electrocatalytic oxidation of the native metal by Cu(II)-ammines. Unfortunately, Cu(II) complexes also catalyse the undesirable conversion of thiosulfate to polythionates. We have been seeking alternatives to ammonia, which fulfil the role of ammonia but minimize thiosulfate decomposition. One aspect of these studies has involved the determination of the rate of thiosulfate oxidation by the Cu(II) complexes from UV-Visible spectral changes. Various ligand classes, including pyridyls, polyamines, aminocarboxylates and picolinates, have been tested and the majority found to inhibit thiosulfate decomposition. Interesting variations in reactivity with the nature and denticity of the ligand and L/M ratio have been observed. In the case of open chain polyamine ligands with 2 to 5 nitrogen donors, the rate of thiosulfate oxidation was generally found to decrease with the denticity and the concentration of each ligand. Saturation of the Cu(II) coordination sphere appears to inhibit the oxidation of thiosulfate when excess thiosulfate is present. The Cu(II) complex of the branched polyamine ligand, tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) exhibits this behaviour in excess thiosulfate. Interestingly, when the [Cu(tren)(OH2)]2+ complex is in excess oxidation of thiosulfate was observed. This unexpected finding prompted a spectrophotometric study of this reaction which has revealed that the oxidation of thiosulfate involves several processes, two of which involve the formation and decay of a tetrathionate radical.

Introduction The best way to eliminate the possibility of rapid excavation in tunnel work is to start an argument between Owner Engineer and Contractor. And arguments are readily started when work is progressed without a frank open agreement on the rules of the game. Fifty years ago a tunnel contractor took a job to excavate and line a tunnel, providing all labor and materials under the guidance and continuous instruction of the Engineer who provided all survey work, checked each new heading and set the lines for the next round of drill holes, usually designed and ordered protective measures, kept record of progress and controlled payment for the work. In my first job in a tunnel, muck cars were loaded by hand and hauled by donkeys. Progress was, at today's criteria, not rapid. The Contractor or in the case of a large concern, his executive field representative was always at the site, knew most of his men by name, and there was a mutual feeling of respect between him and the Engineer in charge of the work. Misunderstandings were cleared up when they came up, expeditiously and fairly, even though satisfaction was not always expressed. The Owner came for the ground breaking and usually for the holing through shot. The Owner had full reliance on the Engineer's ability and integrity. The Engineer recognized the Contractor's expertise in being able to man the job and produce results.

In the course of carbonization of coal under a rising temperature condition, volatile matter (V.M.) is released. The kind and amount of V.M. released depend on the kind of coal. Components of V.M. are tar, hydrocarbons (CH4, C2H4, C2H6, C3H8), CO, CO2 and H2, which are released in this order as a function of carbonization temperature. When the carbonization of coal under a rising temperature condition is interrupted at a certain temperature, TC, max, semi-coal-char with residual V.M. is obtained. If some optimum interruption-temperature is chosen, small but most suitable amount of V.M., namely H2, is retained. When the semi-coal-char thus obtained is heated again under the same rising temperature conditions but up to more than TC, max (1), the residual V.M. is released from just around TC, max (1). We propose novel iron ore agglomerate bearing such semi-coal-char with some strength. While simple iron ore agglomerate bearing coal char will start the reduction reaction as solid-solid reaction at somewhat higher temperature, the proposed one will start the reduction reaction as gas-solid reaction at somewhat lower temperature but a little higher than TC, max. Samples of semi-coal-char and novel iron ore agglomerate bearing such semi-coal-char have been prepared and evaluated.

The great philosopher, Marshall McLuhan, is said to have stated that the use of forecasting as a means of guiding future actions is akin to driving an automobile through observations made in the rear-view mirror! In effect, in forecasting it is assumed that there will be an orderly progression from the past into the future, and that the model will be sufficiently unvarying for use to gauge both the directions and the rates of change. The concepts of forecasting have served man well in disciplines in which the relationship between causes and effects can be clearly demonstrated; such as between rainfall and crop yield, for example. These are of no value, however, when conditions change rapidly and unpredictably, or when there is no model at all. Even worse, under such circumstances our preconceived notions may cause us to make some horrendous errors in judgement. Such are the risks at present in attempting to make an assessment of the educational needs of the minerals industry for the coming century! The model, and the conceptions that we have had of the linkages between cause and effect are in disarray. Minerals markets are chaotic, and there is almost no ability to forecast trends in metal values. Linkages between supply and demand seem tenuous. Internationally, producers are struggling for survival. Mine closures, temporary shutdowns, and reopenings are frequent occurrences. Decision-making under uncertainty is probably one of the most certain things about the world mining industry Today!

Man is born on Mother Earth without knowledge or skills. Soon he finds physical needs for food, clothing, shelter, exercise, and relaxation. His personal needs are self-expression, new experiences, and amusements, while his social needs have been classified as work, status, security, friendship, companionship, and love. He finds himself infinitesimal in comparison to the whole. Often- times when he feels smug, he is actually riding for a fall. And nothing is much worse than frustrated man. The postwar world does not provide the Utopia of peace and prosperity of which man had dreamed. In fact, it seems that the sacrifices and waste of that great struggle are being lost in the morass of stupidity, selfishness, and cupidity which unfortunately are still the most conspicuous traits of the human race. Perhaps it is too soon to expect the blessiilgs which are supposed to appear in a peaceful world, and man's thought is clouded with a pessimism engendered by the conflict itself, in which all activities tend to enhance his pessimistic nature. Must man submit that it is a law of nature for nations to go to war? The war has demonstrated that when faced with a common danger, peoples differing in antecedents, language, forms of government, and resources can unite for a time, pool their skills and abilities, and emerge victorious from a contest unparalleled in magnitude, ruthlessness, carnage, waste, and cost.
