ALUMINUM'S war history is the record of a successful race to expand facilities fast enough to meet the multiple increases in military requirements, principally for aircraft. From the beginning of the war program in 1940 through 1942, requirements estimates were repeatedly lifted to new high levels, and plans for increasing capacity had to be constantly revised. In 1943, basic metal supply caught up with and exceeded requirements, and by 1944, the surplus of primary production was large enough to force reduction in output and plant closings. In the past two years, ingot capacity has been ample, though periodic critical shortages have been experienced for a few fabricated shapes as a result of sudden shifts in demand. (Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AFTER 30 years of development and after an output of $350,000,000 in value of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper, there has not been published a satisfactory explanation of the origin of the immense deposits of the Leadville district. The original examination find survey of Leadville by members of the U. S. Geological Survey was a most magnificent piece of work, but their attempt to explain the origin of the ores was based upon the then-accepted theory of lateral secretion, originated by Sandberger, which theory was afterwards disproved in many cases by further development in numerous districts. This theory contended that the ore in the veins had been leached by surface-waters from the eruptive rocks in the immediate vicinity, and it had its origin in the fact that the neighboring eruptive rocks all contained, to an appreciable degree, the several metals found in the ore-deposits. But the practical miner, reasoning in a simple manner from the condition of things as he found them underground, soon discovered the fallacy of this proposition. He reasoned that, in the case of the Leadville deposits, this theory could not be true, because, if the ores were leached from the overlying eruptive rocks by surface-waters, they would as a matter of necessity be controlled by the action of gravity, and the main bodies would collect in- natural depressions of the underlying limestone, and at all points where such depressions existed. But this was not in accord with the channels of ore as he found there ; and hence the theory of lateral secretion in this district was never accepted. In mid-2015 the steel industry faced a strong crisis due to the weak performance of the Brazilian economy and the persistent entry of Chinese steel into Brazilian territory. This situation demanded that Brazilian steelmakers seek to develop products to meet new export markets. within the volume of exports possible are the rebars, where its applications are in the construction industry. One of the largest importers is Peru which has a large percentage of this export volume. This market demands as a priority requirement the surface quality of blue condition (low oxidation index) and mechanical properties normative.in order to meet the items required by the customer at a competitive cost, a vanadium microalloyed steel was applied to the hot rolling process without heat treatment after the last rolling pass. Where the great challenge was to achieve a high level of stretching without compromising the minimum limits of tensile strength. Assuming that the steel used is the correct one interventions were made on rolling parameters such as set-point temperature, residence time of pieces in the furnace, linear mass and rolling speed. All the changes made were based on statistical tools and practical tests. Finally, with the execution of actions generated from the statistical analyzes and tests it was possible to reduce process losses by 96%.

Environmentally correct composites, made from natural fibers, are among the most investigated and applied today. In this paper, we investigate the mechanical behavior of polyester matrix composites reinforced with continuous fique fibers, through bending tensile tests. Specimens containing 0, 10, 20 and 30% in volume of fique fiber were aligned along the entire length of a mold to create plates of these composites, those plates were cut following the ASTM standard to obtained bending tests specimens. The test was conducted in a Instron Machine and the fractured specimens were analyzed by SEM, the results showed the increase in the materials tensile properties with the increase of fiber amount.

Upgrading molybdenite ore can be technically difficult and expensive if talc is a major impurity in the ore. The layered structure of molybdenite and talc decreases the surface specificity of floatation and suppression agents, thereby making molybdenite ore beneficiation inefficient if under some wet processing methods. However, oxidic talc surfaces may be distinct from the sulfidic or oxysulfidic molybdenite surfaces, such distinction related to electron work functions and/or densities of electron donors/acceptors sites. If such differences are present, the upgrading of finely sized molybdenite ore by dry triboelectrostatic methods may hold advantages over traditional wet methods.

Edward S. Simpson, Perth, Western Australia (communication to the Secretary): In 1896 the East Coolgardie gold-field was divided into three fields, viz. : Area, square miles. Officia1 Centers. (1) East Coolgardie,. . 634 Kalgoorlie. (2) Broad Arrow,. , 588 Kurawa. (3) Northeast Coolgardie,. 22,960 Kanowna. The whole of the area embraced by the eastern gold-fields is covered with late Tertiary sands and gravel, with occasional beds of clay shales. These mostly overlay granite which occasionally shows through in small round hills. At Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and other mining centers, belts of diorite, serpentine and highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks appear on the surface. The rainfall at Kalgoorlie in 1897 was 4.75 inches. That the climate has not always been so arid is evidenced by the recent discovery at Coolgardie (only twenty-five miles away) in the late Tertiary formations of a thick bed of brown coal, containing numerous fossil fern-leaves. As assayer and mineralogist to the Government of Western Australia I have had occasion to examine a large amount of the Kalgoorlie ores, both in Perth and at the mines at Boulder itself. In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel's Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.

A critical step in open cut coal mining is clean removal of the overburden. This is usually achieved by drilling, blasting and digging. A key part of this process being successful is to stop drilling at the correct blast ‘stand-off distance’. The stand-off distance is the distance between the base of the drilled blasthole and the top of the coal horizon to be mined. Having this correct provides a protective cap of rock above the coal horizon so that the blast will fracture all the overburden without damaging the coal horizon or mixing it with the overburden. Drilling beyond the correct stand-off distance causes the blast to continue into the coal horizon, damaging it and mixing it with the overburden, leading to significant losses of coal product. Conversely, drilling short of the correct stand-off distance results in additional work to remove the intact overburden.

A CORPORATION would go into bankruptcy if its affairs were conducted as are those of the state of New York, according to the Committee on New York State Government Reorganization of the American Engineering Council of the Federated American Engineering Societies, in a report to the chairman, of the Joint Judiciary Committees of the Senate and Assembly. The report, just made public, was signed by the three members of the committee who were appointed by Herbert Hoover. They were H. de-B. Parsons, chair- man, Paul G. Brown and Lewis B. Stillwell. Although the American Engineering Council is a national organization, it decided to aid in governmental reorganization in New York State because of the magnitude of the task. The Council's committee in its report urged the passage of three state reorganization amendments for consolidation of departments, an executive budget system, and a four-year term for the higher state officials. TWIP (Twinning-Induced Plasticity) steels have exceptionally good combinations of strength, ductility and damage tolerance which satisfy the recent requirements of automotive industries. Firstly, TWIP has the most beneficial effect on the work-hardening. It is believed that deformation twins increase the work-hardening rate by acting as obstacles against gliding dislocations. Moreover, TWIP steels have low to intermediate stacking fault energy and hence undergo extensive mechanical twinning during deformation, which in turn leads a good combination of both strength and ductility. To explain the mechanical characteristics and the mechanical behavior of the TWIP steels, we have been made some investigations and experiments that show the effects of microalloying elements and deformation mechanisms. In this study, three different compositions of TWIP steels have been produced. The microstructure and mechanical properties are characterized by using optical, electron microscopy and mechanical tests.

State governments are increasing their efforts each year toward promoting the safety of miners .. Accidents underground are being avoided and mines made safer by means of revising and adding to their mining laws , by enforcing them through mine inspection departments , and by hearty co - operation with other agencies working miners ' safety . The U. S. S. Bureau of Mines as " permissible " for use in gaseous mines ; it is accordingly reproduced in part : "hen during my first inspections of several coal mines in the district I found gas , or fire- darp being given off more or less constantly from the freshly cut coal at numerous points throughout the mines , I became uneasy relative to safety conditions , and am still considering your safety from many angles , but I am more concerned about the gas given off and the coal dust produced daily, than any other factor at the present time .

In the early part of the your 1919 the Bureau of Mines undertook a study of methods of handling oil after it had buon produced, with the view of pointing out the losses due to evaporation and other causes. Observations on present methods show that the oil is subject to largo losses in both quantity and quality from the time it loaves tho well until it is recoivod by the pipe-lina company. During this time it is splashed into four or more tanks of various sizes and with little or no protection over the tops. From the settling tank, where the flow of oil is tamporarily stopped in order to permit sparation of ter and sediments, through the gago tanks and leaso gathering tanks to the largo tank storage where it is hold for many days, rich gasoline vapors roadily escape, especially from tho ghor gravity oil. As no effort is made to measure the oil before it reached the storage tanks, where it is delivered to the pipe-line company, the lossos of the light products of the oil can only be approximated, and, as final results will show, are no doubt usually very much underestimated. In conducting this investigation, the Bureau has endeavored to make tests that would show quantities and values lost, in order to impress better upon those concerned what might be saved through a little more diligence. Eperiments were conducted on both California and Mid-Continent oils. The field operimental work done in California, on which a report is to be published in the near future, is cutlined briefly below: The field work consisted in collecting from operating companies data on storage of oils in large tankage and in performing experiments in the field on storing and piping oil to small lease tanks under practical conditions. Acourate Easurements were takon on the volume, gravity and gasoline content of the oil as it passed through the various stages in its removal from the lease. The work extended over the four seasons of the year in order to obtain better the effect of varying winds and high and low atmospheric temperatures during those periods. Thanks are due to the many oil operators who have taken a personal interest in the work and gave valuable information and assistance. One company furnished the oil and tanks and much of the apparatus and labor. This company also per- mitted the work to be done on its properties in the Coalinga field. This was of material aid, as the results were to be comparative and therefore it was necessary that the same gravity oil be used throughout the experiments.

The aim of this study is to compare amino acids and organic acids in the extraction of gold from silicate ore. Amino acids were found to have higher efficiency of gold extraction than organic acids at the same acid concentration, which is likely due to amino acids having both carboxylic and amine groups in their structure, while organic acids only have carboxylic groups. Five amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and seven organic acids (citric, malic, tataric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acids) were selected to investigate gold extraction efficiency. Aspartic acid was found to have greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid. The optimal gold to aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6, and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35 to 42 percent of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. Further studies are needed to increase gold leaching and reduce incubation time. The results imply that aspartic acid can be used as an alternative reagent to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore. This method is nontoxic to humans, is environmentally friendly and can have real applications.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the continuous personal dust monitor) within a sociotechnical system (STS) framework to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results address how to best incorporate the overarching principles of meta-design STS during the technology integration process. Specifically, quantitative and qualitative data show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce organizational unpredictability and may improve communication within the system to help reduce technology adoption time.

Most of the future phosphate resources in Florida, which accounts for 70  percent of production in the United States, are contaminated with too much dolomite that is difficult to remove with existing industrial practices. The low-grade ore quality coupled with increased phosphate demand is of concern to the Florida phosphate industry. In order to resolve the dolomite issue, various beneficiation technologies were designed and evaluated, but none have been sufficiently successful [1].

Orano Mining maintains a significant level of Innovation and Development Research for its sites in Canada, Niger, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and France. This effort is formalized within the six major thematic programs below, which include more than one hundred affiliated R&D projects:  Geological understanding, tools and methods for exploration  ISR technology (geology, modeling, mining development tools)  Mining technology (SABRE)  Ore treatment and processing (in particular via our Centre for Innovation for extractive metallurgy, CIME)  Environment (radiochemistry, modeling, tools and methods for remediation)  Digital Mine (sensors, transmission, database, and data modeling) This paper describes the main actions of these six programs, their stakes, and their progress. There is no single path leading to innovation but fostering an innovative context and a structured project approach are essential ingredients to successful development and industrial deployment. As a result, Orano Mining has, over the years, developed a disciplined methodology for R&D portfolio and project management. This methodology, presented here, targets a reduction in time to implementation while valuing both the expertise and the work in project mode.

Bentonite is one of the main players in the stability of drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution significantly affect drilling mud’s rheological properties. Although the Specifications for Drilling Fluids Materials report on Oil Companies Material Association (OCMA)-grade bentonite states that the API recommended powder having 2.5 percent mass fraction as the maximum value of residue of diameter greater than 75 μm, there is no other information on the specific size distribution for API bentonite. It was found that API bentonite has a specific size distribution with specific mixing weights. It is important to investigate why that mixture represents the optimum properties of drilling mud and how each individual size fraction has a specific function in the mixture. To clarify the effect of individual size as well as the collective effect of the size distribution, API bentonite was classified into different size fractions, with each tested separately for controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness and packing density.

Increasing demand for high-grade manganese (Mn) ore has led to the practice of selective mining, which produced low-grade Mn ore as waste and in the long term could lead to environmental pollution. Research had been carried out to extract Mn from low-grade ore, which mostly exists as black Mn(IV) oxide (MnO2). Most extraction methods involved the reduction of insoluble MnO2 to soluble Mn2+ in acidic media. Metals other than Mn are also transferred to the pregnant leach solution (PLS) during the leaching process, especially iron (Fe). Due to high Mn concentration in PLS, precipitation is considered the best method to isolate Mn from PLS compared with solvent extraction and ion exchange/absorption. However, due to unselective leaching, the presence of Fe in the PLS makes the Mn separation and purification difficult. Therefore, in this research, the parameters affecting the selectivity of Mn over Fe in leaching process were investigated.

Land uplift due to mine flooding has become a significant challenge with extensive historical mining activities, particularly in Germany’s Ruhr district. The cessation of coal mining operations has led to a gradual rise in groundwater levels, altering geotechnical and hydrological conditions and causing surface uplift. This study develops a system dynamics (SD) model to investigate the dynamic interactions of influential variables such as groundwater levels, total stress, porosity and permeability with land uplift over time. The model integrates causal loop diagrams (CLD) and stock flow diagrams (SFD) to comprehensively understand the system’s behavior. SFD illustrated that for a 10 percent increase in groundwater level, the land uplift increased by about +6 percent, and a rise of 200 percent in total stress caused an 18 percent increase in effective stress, which decreased the land uplift by about 20 percent. This study highlights the importance of dynamic modeling in informing land-use planning and mitigating the long-term impacts of land uplift after mine closures.
