Since its development about forty years ago by J. V. N. Dorr (Cyanidation and Concentration of Gold and Silver Ores, McGraw Hill Book Co., 1936, 1-5), and others, continuous countercurrent decantation has not only become one of the standard methods for extracting gold and silver from their ores, but has also found wide application in other metallurgical and chemical industries. In 1917 L. B. Eames published an excellent paper (Countercurrent Decantation, Trans AIME, 1917, 57, 143- 158), in which he determined the effects of grade of ore, ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated, variations in the density of the thickener spigot discharge and variations in the value of the barren solution upon the gold assay of the solutions discharged from the thickeners in the system. Eames showed that, other things being equal, the dissolved gold lost in the tailing varies directly as the value of the ore and as the value of the barren solution. The tailing loss de- creases rapidly as the ratio of solution precipitated to ore treated is increased to about three or four to one. Beyond this point the improvement is negligible.

"In the mineral processing, clay minerals have negative effects on the flotation of valuable minerals. In this study, we investigated how the floatability of malachite (CuCO3·Cu(OH)2) is affected by presence of the clay minerals in the fundamental aspects. Flotation experiments were conducted by using Na2S and PAX (potassium amyl xanthate), and the floatability of malachite was compared between the cases in the presence and absence of clay minerals. The results showed that floatability was greater in the absence of clay minerals than in the presence of clay minerals and decreased with increasing weight percent of kaolinite under same conditions applied. In addition to examine how clay minerals affect malachite floatability, we conducted flotation experiment with changing clay adding order. The results indeed showed that malachite floatability was affected by clay adding sequence. INTRODUCTION The demand of copper is growing as industrial development increases, but mineral resources are limited. Therefore, studies for Cu oxide flotation are being conducted to improve their recovery(1-3). However the mining industry is well aware of the difficulty in treating copper ores in the presence of clay minerals(4). Clay minerals have unique properties and these properties may affect flotation. In the previous studies, the effect of slime coating of clay minerals on flotation was investigated(4-6). For example, Zhao and Peng (2014), Peng and Zhao (2015), and Arnold and Aplan (1986) found that clay slime coating on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and coal surfaces through the electrostatic attraction reduced surface hydrophobicity and then depressed the flotation. Other researchers have also reported clay minerals have impact on pulp rheology. Especially in the case of bentonite, pulp viscosity increased with increasing amount of bentonite and the higher pulp viscosity have deleterious effect on copper recovery(7, 8). However, these studies only focus on slime coatings and pulp rheological behavior. Forbes et al. attempted to decoupling rheology and slime coatings effect on flotation but this study has limitation that individual role of two clay species either attached to mineral or suspended in bulk solution was excluded(9). Hence, in this study, we aimed to investigating the effects of individual clay (suspended and attached) on malachite flotation."

A sequential sampler, based on the Archimedes screw, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. Its initial purpose was to collect air samples during tracer gas studies in underground mines. However, the basic concept can be applied to other sampling needs, including sampling of liquids. A prototype was built and successfully tested in the Bureau's Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pa. The simple design makes the sampler inherently durable and low in cost.

And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. In many modem concentrators the use of supervisory systems in their grinding circuits has meant more consistent operations and increases in capacity. These systems rely on a series of specific algorithms that uses different pieces of information and drives actions over the process. One of these algorithms is the ball mill overload detection, which plays an important role in any supervisory strategy designed to maximize ore feed rate in wet grinding circuits. This paper introduces different overload detection algorithms, and compares them in terms of the time taken to detect the overload condition. This comparative analysis is based on highly noisy power draw measurements obtained in an industrial plant.

Tunnels and underground projects are inherently more risky than vertical projects, which typically utilize more conventional design and construction approaches and are undertaken in the context of relatively ascertained and defined conditions. On tunnel and under-ground projects, there are a host of special risk factors, including unknowns and uncertainties as to the physical and behavioral characteristics of the ground, the inextricable interdependence and necessary interaction of design decisions and construction means and methods with those ground conditions as well as the manner in which risks are allocated among project participants for un-anticipated subsurface conditions. Public-private partnerships (PPP) projects, in their own respects (and independent of any major subsurface component), pose significant risk for all private sector participants. The main driver of owners to procure projects using PPP is financial, as often all, or substantially all, of the design and construction risk are transferred to the private sector consortium, including the design-build (D-B) team. For a concerning number of those public owners, that risk transfer regime includes rather onerous and aggressive contractual terms that allocate to the private sector participants substantially all risks associated with the encountering of unanticipated subsurface conditions. These aggressive risk allocation provisions, while directly impacting project participants upstream of the consulting engineer, have an indirect and corresponding risk intensifying effect upon consulting engineer professional liability exposure. Proper handling of the radioactive fraction associated with the production of rare earth elements (REEs) in the mining industry is essential for a sustainable environment and human health. Actinides, such as uranium and thorium, have similar chemical properties to REEs, and are often co-dissolved in current hydrometallurgical processes. This causes radioactive contamination of the infrastructure through the extraction cycle. The present study optimizes, through experimental design, a sequential leaching procedure with Na2CO3/NaHCO3 and HCl for the rapid and selective dissolution of REEs and actinides. Optimization focuses on the main operating parameters (time, temperature, and concentration); different types of minerals, REE composites, and ores; on achieving maximal leaching yield; and on minimizing dissolution of the gangue metals (Fe, Si, and Ca). The final sequential procedure was rapid (1 h), effective, and led to the segregation of Th, U, and REEs with limited dissolution of the gangue metals.

The processes and equipment for INLRFH (Isothermal Normalizing by Utilizing the Residual Forged Heat) of alloy carburizing steel products are presented. It is shown that four key parameters: namely (I) cooling rate before isothermal normalizing, (IT) the lowest cooling temperature before isothermal normalizing, (111) isothermal normalizing temperature and (IV) isothermal normalizing time, should be controlled. The prediction and calculation of these parameters can be achieved on the basis of components treated and the technical requirements of the steel parts by an on-line expert system. The cost-reductions due to the energy savings resulting from implementing this system for automotive parts heat-treatment are most promising.

"Present Situation:At the beginning of 1920 a general feeling of optimism was noted in many talc-producing districts. The industry seems to have recovered from the temporary depression of the first half of 1919 and many mills are running at capacity production with their entire output for 1920 contracted for. The imports of talc for 1919 were only slightly larger than in 1918 by weight and probably no more by value. Thus foreign competition has not begun to be seriously felt. Several new companies in this country have been organized, some to operate new deposits and others to continue the work done by others.An interesting phase of the present situation is the possibility of increased use of talc in paint. There is a shortage of barium sulfate used as a paint filler. Since, for some uses, talc is considered second only to BaSo4 as a filler for paint, it is possible that part of the shortage could be relieved by an increased use of talc.A series of physical tests upon all pigment materials used in the manufacture of paints is being conducted for the Paint Manufacturers Association of the United States. It is important that all types of talc be represented in these tests. Producers of finely ground talc, 200 mesh and finer, are urged to submit samples of at least two pounds each of these grades that are available to paint makers with trade name and quality data, to the Institute of Industrial Research, 19th & B Streets, N. W., Washington, D. C., where the tests are being conducted."

"In a time that seems to be dominated with nothing but bad news coming from the mining industry, there is a success story that has been quietly happening in Southwestern Wyoming for more than 60 years, and it is one that is likely to continue for many decades to come.Beneath the wind swept high desert plains of Sweetwater County, WY, about 32 km (20 miles) west of Green River, lies the Green River Basin where five companies, including Tata Chemicals North America (TCNA), are mining the world’s largest known deposit of trona and, in turn, are collectively producing 15.3 Mt/a (17 million stpy) of soda ash.“We have a long-term growth story that has been, and will continue to be a steady earner for many years to come,” said J. Martin Keighley, managing director of TCNA who has been in charge of the mine, formerly known as General Chemical Industrial Products Inc., for Tata Chemicals for about three years.According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Keighley is safe with his prediction of future success. The BLM estimates that there are enough reserves in the Green River Basin to last another 2,000 years. Currently, four trona beds in the Green River Basin are being mined and in all, there are 25 major trona beds that occur within the Wilkins Peak Member of the Upper Eocene Age Green River Formation. The trona deposit as a whole covers about 2,500 km2 (1,000 sq miles) within the Green River Basin.And imagine, this economic mainstay in the region was discovered accidently.Prior to 1948, soda ash, the salable commodity that comes from trona and is used in a host of products including glass and detergent, was produced synthetically. In 1938, an oil and gas exploration team working in the Green River Basin came away with a find that would change the soda ash industry and the physical and employment landscape of southwestern Wyoming forever. Within 10 years, the communities of Green River and Rock Springs, which were built largely on the back of coal mining and railroads, had another commodity beneath their feet."

Ni current collector has excellent electronic conductivity and mechanica, properties. However, nicke, cannot be used in H2S-containing syngas SOFCs due to sulfur poisoning and coking. Copper coated nicke, is prepared by electrochemica, deposition. XRD, SEM, and EDX techniques are used to characterize the samples. After high temperature treatment in syngas containing, the coated samples exhibit high resistance of coke formation and sulfur corrosion compared to pure nickel. Therefore, copper coated nicke, is a promising anode current collector for H2S-containing syngas SOFCs.

The operation of combustion engines of various types at high altitudes and other combustion processes at reduced pressures have made it desirable to determine limits of flammabilities -under these conditions. Experiments carried out by the Bureau of Mines have shown that although natural gas-air mixtures become more difficult to ignite as the pressure is reduced below atmospheric, with a suitable source of ignition the limits of flammability are as wide at 175 mm mercury absolute as they are at atmospheric pressure.

Today, sodium cyanide is extensively used for extracting gold, however it is highly toxic to the environment if not managed properly. This paper discusses the key challenges presented to gold operations in efforts to come into alignment with the Russian environmental regulations and suggests solutions to overcome these challenges. It is a fact that the major environmental threat cyanide poses to water sources. Therefore, natural water sources should be well protected from the adverse effect of cyanides used in hydrometallurgical processes. For this, the following site procedures and facilities are practiced: in-site and external water recycling systems, reclaim water treatment if required and tailings ponds with water impermeable screens (tailings ponds with controlled leakage). Cost comparison analysis of cyanide destruction methods was carried out. It was revealed that the aldehyde treatment method developed by Irgiredmet JSC demonstrated the best economics. Cyanide emissions are treated by mass-manufactured packed and membrane devices which allow to keep cyanides at the acceptable limiting values established by environmental regulatory agencies.

A number of investigators have studied the electrokinetic potential (?) of kaolinite as a function of pH. (1,2,3,4,5) These investigators all agree that the ? is negative except at quite acid pH values. The actual shapes of the curves reported by the several authors vary considerably. In spite of the general negative character of kaolinite the mineral has a rather high anion exchange capacity. (6,7,8) The cation exchange capacity is the lowest for the clay minerals. (6) It has been shown that anionic surfactants adsorb readily onto the mineral even up to neutrality, often in quantities exceeding the reported anion exchange capacity. (7,8) At least part of the anionic adsorption should be onto positive edge sites thought to exist on the mineral. (9,10) In the present study ? of kaolinite was measured as a function of pH using both the streaming potential (sp) and microelectrophoresis (m.e.p.) methods. In addition ? was measured at various pH values as functions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride (TMDAC) concentrations. In some experiments decyl alcohol (DA) was added.

"UHE Peixe Angical is a 452 MW hydroelectric power plant located on the Tocantins River in Tocantins, Brazil. In 1999, geologists began feasibility studies to estimate the river’s hydroelectric potential, and the decision was made to proceed with the construction of a power plant. In 2002, after extensive investigation, the studies indicated geological homogeneity at the site for the dam, except for an anomaly detected on the left margin, and construction began on the $1.2 billion project.As the work began, the complex ground conditions presented several serious difficulties. The solution was unlike any undertaken before in Brazil— a 100-m-long secant cutoff wall, with 76 1.8-m-diameter piles of up to 78 m deep. All were placed in a six-month period.In the preparation for the detailed construction plans, further studies in the area of the anomaly better defined the geology so that a treatment program could be developed. The feasibility study had detected silicified rock with high permeability in one area, and an injection curtain was designed with five injection lines. In the other area with an anomaly, further investigation revealed a permeable marble formation that was 50 m thick. Here, a specific injection program with three injection lines was developed.The injections started in February 2005 in the marble formation area. By July of that year, only the primary and secondary holes were drilled from the three lines, resulting in a space between injections of 1.50 m. By the end of July, the drilling was halted. The contractor had identified a thick area of heterogeneous material below the transition zone that was characterized by a mixture of soil, fractured rock and hard fractured rock. The anomalies were detected while drilling, and both the general contractor and the designer concluded that the phenomenon of “piping” was taking place.Constructing a positive cutoff wall became a priority."

Studies of the northeastern Mississippi bauxites were initiated primarily for the purpose of ascertaining the quality and quantity of the ore. Subsequently, this ore was found to have a rather dubious economic value as was previously suspected but never established in earlier economic reports (1, 2, 3). However, the quality of ore was found to be higher than previously thought. Even though the ore bodies were determined during the early stages of this study to be too thin, small and widespread for commercial production a continuation of the study was not abandoned. On the contrary, the present investigation was intensified concentrating less on the economic application and more on stratigraphy and genesis. Considering the ever increasing demand for aluminum products the northeastern Mississippi bauxite district which includes portions of Tippah, Benton, Pontotoc, and Union Counties may soon become, in spite of inferior quantities of ore, an attractive area for bauxite production. Presently, however, the meager quantity of ore discourages exploitation. On the other hand, these northeastern district bauxites are facies of more extensive units of lignite bearing high aluminum clays, and considering the advances in aluminum extraction from clay these clays may in the future beckon mining interest. The bauxite of the northeastern Mississippi district, mapped as a part of the Betheden Formation (4). has an outcrop trend along the county lines of Tippah and Benton Counties and the extreme western portion of Union and Pontotoc Counties.
