"A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. The smelting tests were conducted as part of a wider CSIRO Minerals’ research project aimed at developing a single-stage continuous copper-making process. The objective of the flotation work was to maximise copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases.In rougher/scavenger tests on the reduced low copper and self-pulverising slags copper recoveries above 92% were obtained with copper enrichment ratios varying between 2.3 and 2.9. For the oxidised high copper slag copper recoveries were poorer - only 47% of the copper was recovered with an enrichment ratio of 3.3. The presence of the slow floating copper-ferrite phases in the slags limited further (selective) copper recovery. Ageing of the high copper slag, that is, a significant delay between grinding and flotation, resulted in a deterioration of the copper flotation response.The critical parameter affecting the flotation of copper from direct converting slags was found to be the form of the copper in the slag. Slags containing a higher proportion of the more desirable form of copper for flotation will provide the best opportunity for high copper recoveries to be consistently obtained, allowing improvements in the economics of the overall copper-making process."

The ever growing interest to the complex iron ores may be attributed to possible production of the naturally alloyed metals and the efficient recovery of the associated elements. However, the conventional technique for complex ore processing is complicated and in some cases even impossible. A pyrometallurgical benefiation of such ores without melted slag formation has been advanced. A version of the technique assumes pellet production with metal coagulated within a slag shell on grinding the pellets, the metal phase is mechanically separated from the slag shell. The technique has been run up with ferro chromo nickel, high-titanium, high-magnesia, alumina phosphorus ores and concentrates. Another version of the pyrometallurgical benefication without melted slag formation in a rotary kiln has been developed from the schemes for processing red mud of alumina manufacture and high-titanium concentrates. Means have been put up to improve schemes available for lex iron ore processing with primary emphasis on material pretreatment before blast furnace and steelmaking processes. Vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite conentrate oxidized pellets possess low strength at reduction. The technique suggested for pelletizing in the controlled atmosphere improves the afore said pellet metallurgical properties. Prodution of metallized pellets in a conveyor roasting machine holds considerable promise for blast furnace and steelmaking processes. In processing the high-sulphur iron ores still another technique is proposed to roast the fluxed pellets with 95% and more desulphuration.

"A new method of deoxidation and desulfurization of molten iron with magnesium vapor has been developed. An immersion tube, which was filled with pellets of the mixture of magnesia and carbon powders, was put into the molten iron. Magnesium vapor produced by carbothermic reduction of magnesia inside the tube was injected directly into the molten iron with argon carrier gas. The effects of temperature and carrier gas flow rate on deoxidation and desulfurization were investigated. A mathematical model of the reactions was developed. The rates of deoxidation and desulfurization were controlled by mass transfers of magnesium vapor in the gas-phase and oxygen and sulfur in the liquid-phase. This method may offer high efficiency for magnesium deoxidation and desulfurization of molten iron.IntroductionMagnesium is a strong refining agent in steel-making processes1 • At steelmaking temperatures, magnesium has a very low solubility in liquid iron, and a very high vapour pressure2 • Deoxidation and desulfurization with magnesium take place essentially through the interaction of magnesium vapor with oxygen and sulfur dissolved in molten iron, and magnesium can change chemical composition of nonmetallic inclusions3 • However, addition of magnesium to the steel bath is dangerous and does not give high efficiency in the refining process4 • Furthermore, as a refining agent, the price of magnesium is higher than aluminium and CaO fluxes. In the present study, a new method of the deoxidation and desulfurization of molten iron was developed using magnesium vapour in-situ produced by carbothermic reduction of magnesium oxide. Pellets made of mixture of magnesia and carbon powders were charged into an immersion tube, which was made of alumina or graphite. The magnesium vapor was injected directly into the melt. The effects of pellet mass, experimental temperature and carrier gas flow rate were studied on the refining rate. A mathematical model of the refining reaction was proposed on the basis of the experimental results."

The Tata Steel mill at Skinningrove in the North East of England produces top hat sections for mineshaft guides in sizes 102 and 150 mm. The top hat section is the technically preferred shaft guide choice for modern deep mine shafts. This paper explores the relative service performance of top hat and square hollow section guides in service. Comparative corrosion performance is reviewed and the paper describes work commissioned by Tata Steel (as Corus) undertaken by Aker Kvaerner Engineering to evaluate relative winding speeds, relative loads and fatigue life in service. The experience of supply to UK Potash mining is discussed and the future view of high capacity hoisting and larger section size market need and availability is assessed.

The exclusion of coal fly ash from regulation as a hazardous waste has led to increased interest in returning ash to the coalfields for co-disposal. A multi-year column study used coal refuse with high potential acidity (4% total-S), and two alkaline ashes in various bulk-blends. The unamended refuse acidified rapidly, producing acidic (pH 1.7) leachates, high in dissolved metals. Treatments blended with sufficiently high amounts (20 to 33%) of alkaline ash produced alkaline (PH >8.4) leachates with low metal levels, while lower ash blending rates acidified over time to produce metalliferous leachates. Examination of solid materials indicated that pyrite oxidation was occurring to some extent in all treatments. A regression equation (r = 0.95) was developed to estimate time to net acid release for mixtures of these materials. Ash alkalinity and refuse potential acidity must be balanced to insure water quality for co-disposal environments, or the ash materials should be isolated away from acidic drainage waters.

McDermitt Mine is located in northern Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 5 miles south of the Orgeon-Nevada line (Figure I), within the Opalite Mining District. The operation is a joint venture between Placer Amex Inc., San Francisco, and Mineral Exploration Company Ltd., a limited partnership. The McDermitt orebody possesses a discontinuous, gently dipping blanket-like form within 150 feet of the surface over an area 2200 by 2500 feet. The ore zone averages 20 feet in thickness. The ore minerals consist of cinnabar (HgS) and corderoite (Hg3S2C12) deposited parallel to bedding within argillized, Miocene age, tuffaceous lacustrine sediments. Exploration indicates reserves of approximately 3,000,000 tons ore at a grade of 10 pounds mercury per ton (0.5%) An open pit mining operation utilizing scrapers and bulldozers supplies a concentrator with 700 tons of ore per day. The milling operation consists of autogenous grinding, flotation concentration, concentrate dewatering, and tailing disposal, with a design capacity of 100 tons per hour. The furnace section consists of a concentrate filter, vertical six hearth furnace, mercury condensing system, and exhaust gas scrubbing systems. It has a design capacity of 1000 pounds of dry concentrate per hour. The McDermitt orebody is situated about 2000 feet north of the Cordero Mine which, with adjacent properties, produced over 115,000 flasks (76 pounds per flask) mercury from 1941 to 1972' Two other major mercury producers in the district have been the Bretz and Opalite Mines, located in southern Malheur County, Oregon, within 5 miles of the Oregon-Nevada line. Bretz and Opalite have produced about 14,800 and 12,370 flasks mercury respectively, from 1926 to 1965.1/

Scrubbing is gaining increasing recognition as a valuable tool in the treatment of Mesabi Range intermediate iron ores. In general, the earliest washing plants included log-washers in their various flowsheets. While log-washers certainly did impart a degree of scrubbing to the crude ore, such treatment bears little resemblance to the type of scrubbing being practiced today. At the time that these early plants were erected, only the true wash-ores were being processd. ("Wash-ores" are defined as crude ores in which relatively coarse chunks of almost completely liberated iron are found in a matrix of loosely-consolidated fine sand.) To treat ores of this type, sizing at approximately 65 to 100 mesh was sufficient to produce a merchantable concentrate. As crudes were being treated in which there was little "locking" of iron and silica, log-washers tended to disappear and large screens and classifiers took their place in Mesabi range flowsheets. The "screening and classification" type of flowsheet 'had its greatest usage in the 1945-55 period, generally speaking. During this same period, many operators found it necessary to supplement the "wash-ore" type flowsheet with heavy-media treatment.

Plastic materials have been associated with electric and electronic applications since the early days of the electrical industry. Plastics can amount to 30 percents of the scrap mass. Generally, they are treated with flame retardants such as halogenated ones and they can result in different toxic chemical compounds. These plastics can be used as combustibles in the recovery of copper and precious metals. However, during their combustion, halogenated flame retardants can produce dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-furans. The estimated thermodynamic data of several organic compounds resulting from combustion of electric and electronic scrap, have been used in conjunction with the program HSC to calculate the conditions for dioxin and furan formation. The results show that the formation of the dioxins is dependent on the quantities of carbon, hydrogen, chlorine and oxygen reacting in a given system, as well as on parameters such as temperature and pressure.

"The AusIron process is a new development of the well established Ausmelt bath smelting technology(l). The development of this technology has been tied to the South Australian Steel and Energy (SASE) project which brings dedicated coal and iron resources together with this new technology. SASE is a joint venture between Ausmelt (40%), Meekathara Minerals (40%) and the South Australian Government through Mines and Energy South Australia (MESA) (20%). It will use a multiple lance furnace to process iron ore using steaming coal for both fuel and reductant.It is intended to build the simplest plant economically possible. Refinements such as preheating and prereduction of the ore are compatible with the technology but are not expected to be necessary in the first generation plant.The joint venture is negotiating with suitable partners for funding of the project through to commercial implementation at a target scale of2.5 mt/a of pig iron.ObjectivesAusIron aims to produce pig iron directly from steaming coal and from any of a variety of iron sources in a simple furnace system with a minimum of pre-processing of either coal or iron ore. Preheating and prereduction of ore are compatible with the technology but may not be necessary. The immediate aim is not to be the technology that uses the least quantity of coal to produce iron metal but rather the technology that uses the least number of dollars to produce metal.The chemistry of iron making is well known, probably better known than that of smelting of any other metal. Iron has been made for thousands of years and it is possible to make iron from charcoal and ore in a simple blast furnace the size of a beer barrel. The focus is therefore not making iron but rather making it more cheaply than it is made by current technologies. Large blast furnaces now set the standard and new technologies must perform better if they are to gain market share. It is still the cost of iron, energy units and capital going into these mega blast furnaces which ultimately set the market price for pig iron."

Squeezing extra performance from existing equipment (‘sweating the assets’) is key to continuous improvement initiatives, particularly during times of cost cutting where the option of spending additional capital to facilitate circuit upgrades can be severely constrained. A common challenge, however, is identifying the best combination of settings for different process variables, as their effects can be camouflaged by interactions with other process variables and, of course, noise in historical data.This paper describes a recent investigation at Boyne Smelters Limited to identify strategies to coarsen the product of its dry, fixed-speed, open-circuit AG mill, without the need for installing pre-screens prior to the mill. The product is used as insulation material for the reduction of alumina to aluminium, and an excessively fine product was inhibiting the ability of the cover material to dissipate heat from the underlying anodes. The approach was to undertake a series of experiments, designed according to statistical criteria, to elucidate the effect of key process variables (feed blend and power draw) upon the product sizing. The results provided clarity about what strategies would encourage the production of a more desirable mill product (with some surprises). "This research aims at improving the beneficiation of coals and minerals in fine and ultrafine size fractions. A widely used method for upgrading fine and ultrafine particles is froth flotation, which is generally classified into mechanical flotation and column flotation. The present work is focussed on column flotation. A flotation column equipped with a conventional bubble diffuser/sparger was used with oscillatory air supply generated using a fast-switching solenoid valve. The flotation tests were carried out for coal particles and mineral particles, respectively, and a comparison in flotation performance was made between oscillatory air supply and steady air supply. It was found that use of oscillatory air supply with a proper valve switching frequency and on/off time ratio to replace steady air supply could lead to increased recovery of coals or minerals by more than 14 percentage points and substantial reagent cost savings. The improved flotation performance was attributed to enhanced gas dispersion and flow conditions. This research offers a simple new approach to improving the beneficiation of fine coals and minerals with using flotation columns.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation has been widely used for the separation and concentration of fine coals and minerals by exploiting the difference in their affinity to air bubbles in aqueous medium. Froth flotation is an effective method for beneficiation of coal and mineral particles in a certain size range. It remains difficult to upgrade ultrafine mineral particles. One of the reasons for the ineffective flotation of fine particles is the low probability of bubble-particle collision in the collection zone (i.e., the pulp zone). According to Reay and Ratcliff (1973) and Yoon and Luttrell (1989), the probability of collision is significantly affected by bubble size and particle size, and the collection zone recovery can be increased by decreasing the bubble size."

Rockbursts and rockfalls cause very large safety and productivity losses in underground mines. One of the major unsolved problems of safe, economical rock support in underground mining has been that of maintaining anchorage during dynamic rock loading conditions or seismic related occurrences. It is recognized that the large displacements and high strain rates in excavation walls and underground structures cannot be countered by increasing the strength of stiff rock-reinforcing systems but must be accommodated by introducing yieldability into the support elements. This paper introduces a low cost yieldable support system which provides viable solutions to dynamic support loading. Such system should not only provide a feasible and more effective rock mass stabilization strategy but improve mine safety and reduce losses.

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

The copper mineralization of the Mesozoic Passaic Formation of New Jersey is typical of copper deposits in eastern North American Mesozoic sediments. Most such deposits are located at the base of the first of several basalt flows that are interbedded with continental, red-bed sediments. The copper mineralization is similar in most respects to that of the Keweenawan Basalts of the Lake Superior area. The first basaltic flow units of the eastern North American Mesozoic basins, and the Keweenawan Basalts, are continental quartz tholeiites of similar chemical composition and copper contents. The copper minerals and associated zeolite facies metamorphic mineral assemblages of these two rock units are also approximately the same. Stoiber and Davidson (1959) suggested that Keweenawan copper was mobilized and concentrated during metamorphism. The evidence pertaining to the Mesozoic copper deposits of New Jersey is consistent with such an interpretation and also with DeVore's (1955) suggestion that ore fluids commonly arise as a result of the mobility of metals under metamorphic conditions. There is additional evidence that final metamorphic concentration of Mesozoic copper was preceded by an initial stage of hydrothermal precipitation related to fluids emitted by basaltic magma.

"The adsorption of dehydroabietylamine acetate on quartz, hematite, rutile and baddeleyite has been deter-mined for concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 5,600 µ. moles/I and for pH values ranging from 2.5 to 10.5.The surface tension, UV and IR spectra, equivalent conductance and ion concentrations for dehydroabiety lamine acetate solutions have been determined.Contact-angle and flotability studies have established that good collection may be obtained with this amine but that selectivity depends on the suitable use of depressants for some of the minerals."

In the present study, from experimental results, a new concept of possibility of flotation separation of quartz from feldspar is presented. The effect of the nonionic surfactant Brij 58 on the flotation behaviour of quartz and feldspar has been investigated. The effect of the surfactant adsorption at the solid-liquid interface was also studied. The results demonstrate that maximum flotability of quartz occurred at low concentration of surfactant. Feldspar is not collected by this surfactant. Flotation tests with feldspar that had previously been subjected to leaching by hydrochloric acid yielded similar flotation response as that of quartz. The effect of removal of alkali cations from feldspar surface on its flotability was investigated. The effects of inorganic and organic additives on the flotation recovery of quartz are discussed in terms of the slating-out or salting-in properties of these additives. In this paper the activation behavior of quartz using Ca(OH)2 as an activator in quartz reverse flotation with anionic collector was evaluated and their adsorption behavior was investigated using a variety of techniques. The adsorption of the collector KS-I on the surface of quartz with and without Ca2+ was primarily characterized using Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation technique (QCM-D), which is a high sensitivity in-situ surface characterization technique. The flotation performance was evaluated using a laboratory mechanical flotation cell at different process parameters such as pH, collector dosage, and Ca(OH)2 dosage. The anionic collector evaluated was a commercial fatty acid KS-I. The QCM-D data showed that the collector adsorbed on quartz more readily with Ca2+ as activator. The mass and structural property of the collector layer adsorbed on quartz surface at 2.16×10-3 mol/L of Ca2+, 0.3 g/L of collector and pH 12.0 have been studied using the technique of QCM-D. The chemisorption of the collector KS-I on the surface of quartz in presence of Ca2+ were also demonstrated by means of zeta potential, QCM-D and FTIR analysis.

The Barrick Bullfrog underground mine was established as an afterthought to the main open pit. As open pit ore dwindles, the underground mining becomes increasingly more important as an ore source, and to the overall economics of the project. This situation is similar to many other mines, and there is a strong move towards underground mining in the United States today. There are inherent problems in starting and operating underground mines in the shadow of any open pit operation, and at the Bullfrog there were several attempts at productive increases that were both successful and unsuccessful.

Electronic detonators are increasingly being used in today’s blasting in quarries, seismic, surface and underground mines. Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, field programmability and digital safety means. Because of the prerequisite electrical communications between the electronic detonators and the blasting machine, the layout or hook-up of these detonators can play an important role in obtaining the communication fidelity.

A new simple correlation has been developed to evaluate the performance of classifiers. The new correlation has been tested on existing data from 150 different hydro-cyclone classification tests. It is shown that this model provides a meaningful improved method of mathematically describing the classification process.
