Most early research on solvent extraction of coal has been concerned with the molecular structure of coal. Although rush work is continuing, practical aspects of the subject also are being emphasized. For example, development of the Pott-Broche extraction process resulted from the discovery of very efficient solvents for the pressure-extraction of coal. Recently, Orchin and Storch reported the use of even more efficient solvents under similar conditions. In addition to the discovery of more effective solvents, the possibility of efficient extraction at atmospheric pressure is obviously of practical interest. H. J. Rose observed that phenanthrene at its atmospheric boiling point readily dispersed 80 percent or more of Pittsburgh-bed bituminous coal. This fact served as the starting point of the present investigation, ill which determination of the chemical specificity of this solvent and the chemical nature of the resulting extracts was undertaken. This paper represents a progress report of the results obtained to date.

On July 30, 1979 New Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the decade-old National Environmental Policy Act went into effect. These new regulations replace approximately seventy different sets of agency regulations, providing some uniformity throughout the Federal government in the conduct of environmental reviews and preparation of environmental impact statements (EIS). This attempt by the Federal government at a general improvement in the preparation and quality of EIS's presents an opportunity for the mining industry to evaluate how the EIS process for mining proposals can be expedited. The environmental impact statement is often a key element on the critical path of a major mining project. Preparation of the EIS is ordinarily the responsibility of the Federal agency with primary decision-making authority over the project. Still, the proponent, i.e. the mining company, can play a major role in the process and have a major impact on the timeliness and adequacy of the effort. Typically, the Proponent will conduct (or will hire consultants to conduct) environmental baseline studies of, for example, air quality, wildlife, geology, water quality, vegetation and archaeology. These studies are then compiled into an environmental report and submitted to the agency. The agency verifies the data and incorporates them into the environmental impact statement.

[Gypsum is one of the most important nonmetallic c minerals, as is indicated by the fact that the United States consumed approximately 3,500,000 tons of natural and calcined gypsum in 1937. The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. The balance was used in the uncalcined condition as retarder in Portland cement and or agricultural purposes.]

"Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a coal-mass model to realistically simulate the deformation and loading behaviors of the ribs of coal pillars in underground coal mines. The scale-dependent properties (stiffness and strength) of coal material were considered in the coal-mass model. In this paper the orientation of face cleat with respect to driving direction was integrated in the coal-mass model. The controlling parameters (dimensionless coal-mass scale and fracture strains) of the modified coal-mass model were calibrated using a published case study of coal pillar strength. Numerical models with wide ranges of controlling parameters were conducted to simulate the test pillar. The best match between the numerical modeling results and the measured stresses and deformations was achieved by using a coal-mass scale of 30 and fracture plastic shear and tensile strains of 3.25% and 0.325 %, respectively. INTRODUCTION The failure of coal pillar ribs by itself are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can indirectly contribute to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the past decade, rib failures have resulted in 12 fatalities, representing 28% of the ground-fall fatalities in U.S. underground coal mines. Mining depth has always played a very important role in assessing rib stability. Gauna and Mark (2010) completed an analysis of rib fatalities that occurred between 1996 and 2010. One of their most prominent and influential findings was the identification of a relationship among fatalities, depth, and mining height. Therefore, Coal rib stability will continue to be a challenge for future deeper mines in U.S. coal basins. In the past several decades, research efforts have focused on roof support. The current rib control practice in U.S. coal mines is to select rib bolts through a trial-and-error approach (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Rib failure incidents can be can be substantially reduced or even eliminated by adopting an engineering-based coal rib design approach. The factors affecting rib stability in coal mines are numerous and mutually dependent. These factors include but not limited to mining height and overburden depth, interburden thickness for multiple-seam mining, coal strength, cleat density, entry direction with respect to cleat orientation, existence or absence of partings in the coal, percentage of extracted roof and/or floor rock, density of rib bolt support (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Moreover, it is difficult to isolate the particular effect of a specific factor on the overall rib stability. Therefore, a reliable empirical rib design approach is not achievable because it requires a significant number of case histories to be collected in order to have a reasonable range of all of the critical parameters. However, numerical modeling can be a practical tool to assist with rib support design if the modeling is realistic, which can only be achieved through calibration and validation of the numerical model against field data."

Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) has been proven to be an excellent candidate as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) for hot sections in, for instance, heat or internal engines and gas turbine parts. The main functions of these coatings are reduction of heat losses, reduction of fuel consumption, increasing efficiency, and extending durability and life. One of the main problems involved is wear behavior in the development of such coatings for these applications. Using air plasma spraying (APS) technique, conventional and nanostructured 8 wt % yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) coatings were deposited on austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304) disc-shaped substrates. The coated substrates were subjected to pin-on-disc wear tests, using 10 mm silicon nitride and zirconia balls as the pin. The coefficient of friction was recorded in real time. The weight loss of coated substrates was measured. Coatings were characterized before and after being subjected to wear testing by various techniques including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Effects of various experimental parameters such as wear distance, test temperature, and counterface material were also investigated. Results obtained revealed that, regardless of experimental conditions applied, the nanostructured zirconia coating shows better wear and tribological properties than those of the conventional one.

The National Steel Pellet Project and the Butler Taconite Project are operated by The Hanna Mining Company in the vicinity of the towns of Keewatin and Nashwauk, on the western Mesabi Range. Production began in 1967, after seven years of exploratory and development diamond drilling and reconnaissance magnetic surveys, Previously, direct shipping hematitegoethite ores and gravity concentrates had been produced in the area from numerous open pits and several underground mines since the start of the century. Total shipments of these oxidized ores amounted to more than 200 million tons, but at the present time such reserves are nearly exhausted, and there are no mining operations in the Keewatin-Nashwauk area except at the two taconite projects. The locations of all of the present taconite operations on the Mesabi Range are shown in Figure 1, extending for a distance of about seventy miles from the Butler plant to the Dunka River area. The Butler and National plants have a combined rated capacity of 4.4 million tons of pellets. Their reserves cover a combined strike length of about eight miles on the Biwabik iron formation. All of the intervals between present taconite operations on the Mesabi are potential sources of additional magnetic taconite; in particular, exploration and economic studies have been carried out by Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the Biwabik area between Aurora and Virginia, and by Pickands Mather and Company in the Hibbing area. However, west of the Henna and Butler holdings, it appears unlikely that magnetic taconite exists in commerical quantities at economic depths due to extensive oxidation of magnetite to hematite.

"Coal and coal byproducts produced annually contain a sufficient amount of rare earth elements (REEs) to meet current U.S. demand. The REEs exist in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed elements associated with clays, and chemically bonded elements within the organic coal matrix or host mineral. Researchers at three universities collaborated to evaluate the effectiveness of existing physical and chemical concentration processes for the recovery of the REEs. The efforts found that physical separation processes can increase the total REE content in the thickener underflow material collected from a Central Appalachian coal cleaning facility from around 300 ppm to values greater than 17,500 ppm on an ash basis. Leaching followed by solvent extraction was found to be the most effective to recover the REEs from coarse middlings materials collected from multiple coal basins, as indicated by recovery values exceeding 80 percent. Based on material characterization data and process evaluations conducted for several potential feed coal sources, economic recovery of the REEs will require byproduct production of both clean coal and REE concentrate using a process flowsheet that is unique for each source. IntroductionRecent studies initiated by the National Energy Technology Laboratory showed that U.S. coals contain significant amounts of rare earth elements (REEs), suggesting that rare earth minerals (REMs) and/or REEs can be produced as byproducts (Ekmann, 2012). According to the report, the richest source of REEs is the Central Appalachian coal. At present, there are 208 coal preparation plants located in the region consisting of areas within the states of West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee, with a total capacity of 166,495 t/h, or more than 1 Gt/y (Fiscor, 2014). If only a portion of these plants are retrofitted with advanced separation processes, the U.S. coal industry would become a significant producer of REE concentrates as byproducts. An inherent advantage of becoming a byproduct producer of REEs is that no mining cost needs to be part of the production cost."

Zinc mining at Jefferson City began in 1854 with small scale production of oxidized ore from open pits. Significant production began in 1913 with the development of the Mascot Mine by the American Zinc Company. In 1965, four flotation mills were treating crude ore at the rate of about 12,000 tons per day and the Mascot-Jefferson City district currently is the largest zinc producing area in the United States. The producing mines, Mascot, Young, North Friends Station, New Market Zinc, Grasselli, Davis-Bible, Coy, and the Jefferson City, are 15 to 28 miles northeast of Knoxville in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province, an area of gentle relief lying between the more rugged Great Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland escarpment. The ore is strata bound, occurring essentially within a stratigraphic range of 200 feet in the Lower Kingsport and Upper Longview formations of Lower Ordovician age. In the lower strata of the mineralized section, the ore generally is found in coarsely crystalline elastic dolomite breccia containing silica and chert debris within a sequence of aphanitic limestones. The upper strata of the mineralized section are fine-grained primary dolomites that, in the ore zones, have been fragmented in mosaic patterns by solution collapse with the interfragmental space filled by white gangue dolomite and sphalerite. The mineralogy is unusually simple, sphalerite being the only important sulfide. Pyrite is very sparse. Dolomite gangue is abundant, silica was deposited in quite small amounts, calcite is minor, and fluorite and barite are very rare. The principal ore controlling structures are rubble breccia zones that were formed during the post-Lower Ordovician-pre-Middle Ordovician erosion interval by supergene solution as a phase of the development of a regional karst system of underground drainage that extended to' depths of at least 800 feet. The major Appalachian orogenic structures are post-ore and have been superimposed on the ore bodies. There is substantial evidence to support the current thinking of the writers that the ore deposits were formed at a depth not exc1~eding 800 feet.

Simulation of coal preparation circuits is becoming a widely practiced technique used for the design of coal preparation plants. On a much more limited basis, simulators are finding application in off-line process control. A typical application in the latter category involves inputting projected coal washability data for a shift into the simulator and using the software to optimize product quality and recovery within a range of predefined specifications. The plant is then operated at SG?s of separation determined from the simulation exercise for the one shift time period. This procedure is useful in that it incorporates some form of advanced planning into preparation plant operations. There is an attempt made to reflect changes in feed coal quality on a shift by shift basis rather than continually running the plant near design specifications with changes in SG?s of separation being made in response to an inadequate sampling program which only provides a spot measurement of material that has already passed through the plant. Instead of instituting changes on a shift by shift basis, NHI has proposed a method whereby monitoring three major operating parameters, * Feedrate to jig * Flowrate from hydrocyclone overflow * Density from cyclone overflow the ongoing plant operating performance can be accurately predicted on a continual basis, i.e., updated hourly. Using a distribution curve to predict the split between the clean coal and refuse from a given separator does not account for variations in efficiency that occur as a result of variations in operating parameters. NHI and Arch have studied the effect of both jig loading and solids content in the recirculating load to the jig on product quality. As a result, relatively simple measurements can be made on-line in a preparation plant which will provide input data to the simulation program that enables the prediction of jig/hydrocyclone circuit performance on a real time basis.

The effect of grain refinement on the tensile and fatigue crack propagation behavior of sand cast magnesium alloy AM60B has been investigated in the present study, C2Cl6 in the amount of 0,3% was used to grain refine the melt, The fracture toughness tests were conducted in laboratory air at room temperature (25°C) using a sine-wave cyclic frequency of 20Hz and a load ratio of R = 0,1, The response in the Paris's regime and the critical stress range were determined, Preliminary findings have shown that C2Cl6 has a significant effect on both the tensile properties and fatigue crack propagation of the alloy tested, Grain refinement increased both the yield and ultimate tensile strength by more than 46%, and decreased the crack growth rate from 2,7 to 1,4 MPa Vm , However, the grain size seems to have a smaller effect on threshold stress intensity factor range. The fracture surfaces of specimens were examined optically and under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the relationship between grain size and fatigue properties.

The multi-gravity separator (MGS) is a novel piece of equipment for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. However, the published literature does not demonstrate its use in the separation of Iron ore fines. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the effects of different process variables on the performance of an MGS for the beneficiation of Iron ore fines. The results obtained from this study revealed that among the parameters studied, drum rotation, amount of wash water and angle of inclination play dominating roles in controlling the yield and grade of the Iron ore. The majority of the newly developed Multi gravity concentrators have tremendous potentials for various applications. Therefore, the performance evaluation of these concentrators treating various minerals, coals, heavy metal recovery from tailing dams, etc., have become an active research topic. Several attempts have also been made to develop appropriate mathematical models of individual concentrators. Despite all these efforts, these concentrators have yet to find the widespread applications they deserve. The ?as received? sample assayed 40.80% Fe, 40.90% SiO2,0.24% Al2O3and 0.20 % LOI and all other trace elements within the specified range. The current paper deals with the Mineralogical studies, characterization and process amenability studies of Sub grade Iron ore from Deposit No. 5, Bacheli complex of Bailadila using Multi Gravity Separator (MGS).

REE analyses of cumulate plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma can- not be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data is more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a re- appearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultramafic zone of the complex.

Cerro Verde is one of several large porphyry-type copper deposits in Southern Peru. The copper occurs as primary sulphides, with a significant oxide capping. The exploitation of the deposit has been correspondingly divided into two stages, the first consisting of copper production from oxides, and the second from sulphides. Minero Peru successfully started the Stage I plant in June of 1977 with the first production of electrowon copper cathodes. This paper is essentially devoted to a description of the Stage I process, which can be summarized as follows: Ore is trucked to the primary crusher, where it is crushed to 225 mm and conveyed to a coarse ore stockpile. Ore withdrawn from the stockpile is secondary crushed to 65 mm, conveyed to a truck loadout bin, loaded into trucks and driven to the leaching pads. Ore is placed on the pads in lifts and sprayed with sulphuric acid solution to dissolve the copper. Copper-bearing solution forms a pond behind a dam at the lower end of each pad and is pumped from there to the solvent extraction plant. Copper is extracted from the leach solution into an organic phase and is then stripped from the organic phase to form a purified concentrated copper solution suitable for feed to electrowinning. In electrowinning, the copper is finally recovered as cathodes suitable for sale as refined copper.

Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement in coal-fired boiler design that offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling which can, in turn, increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. This report discusses, in general, AFBC technology and, in particular, progress at the 20-MW Pilot Plant built by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) at its Shawnee Power Station near Paducah, Kentucky.

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way, or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example for the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the USA. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. (UNEP 2017) The European Union has already begun to de-scribe pathways to decarbonization. This paper describes the methods and equipment used by the Utah Copper Co. in constructing a vehicular tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Completion and use of this tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic permitted abandonment of the long-used county highway connecting Bingham and Copperfield. Expanding- operations of the Utah Copper open-cut mine, necessitated construction of a vehicular route away from the ore body. The site Of the tunnel is well beyond ultimate nit slopes and future mining operations. The tunnel not only diverts vehicular and pedestrian traffic is but also carrier, creek water, copper water, sewage, pipe lines, and. power and telephone cables between the two communities. The dimensions of the tunnel permit one-way traffic only. Traffic-control lights have been installed. Owing to the possibility of accumulation of carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhausts, automatic gas detectors has been installed at various stations. These detectors control the operation of a large exhaust fan situated at the upper portal of the tunnel.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act Public Law 109-236) was passed by Congress in response to three major underground coal mine accidents in the United States that claimed the lives of 19 miners. The Act resulted in substantial changes in the underground coal industry relative to the use of technology for mine escape, rescue, disaster response and other areas where the lack of these technologies contributed to the fatalities caused by these tragedies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MINER Act, which makes it an opportune time to reflect on the events that led to its passage, the changes that have been made since then, and the work that remains to be done.As discussed below, the last decade has demonstrated tremendous cooperative efforts among mining operators, technology innovators, labor, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulators, resulting in substantial improvement of the technologies used for escape and rescue and noteworthy progress toward meeting many of the goals of the MINER Act. While the MINER Act and this article pertain primarily to coal mining, many of the technologies are equally applicable to any underground mining and have already found some acceptance outside of coal.Technology gaps targeted by the MINER ActThe MINER Act addressed several technology challenges:• Problems with donning and switching between self-contained, self-rescuers (SCSRs).• Poor visibility in smoke.• No wayfinding assistance for escape from the mine.• Limited breathable air supply.• Inability to locate trapped miners.• Inability to communicate with trapped miners.• Failure of mine seals."

"INTRODUCTION Limestone (which consists essentially of calcium carbonate) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) occur widely in the United States. Their presence is of vast economic importance, because they are used much more extensively than any other form of rock. In 1945, limestone (which, broadly, includes dolomite) was quarried in every State except Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island, and also in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Total production (including that used in cement and lime manufacture) exceeded 151,700,000 tons, or 79 percent of the quantity of all kinds of stone sold or used during that year.Important well-known uses of limestone are as concrete aggregate, road material, railroad ballast, for liming the land, for cement manufacture, as riprap for shore protection, harbor work, and spillways at dams, and as building stone.. None of these uses, however, are considered herein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the industrial and chemical uses that are less widely known and yet are of tremendous importance in a great variety of processing industries. Important examples are dolomite as a refractory furnace lining and limestone as a fluxing agent in blast furnaces, and as a raw material employed in sugar, paper, glass, and alkali manufacture.PRIOR REPORTIn May 1941, the Bureau issued a report 4/ that described these uses in some detail. As new and important developments have taken place during the ensuing years, a revision and representation of the salient features of these uses seem desirable. Asphalt filler and mineral wool uses included in the earlier report are omitted from this paper because they are identified more closely with the highway and building industries, respectively, than with the industrial applications."

Strategies and achievements in the Asian steel industry to construct industrial ecological chain are reviewed largely in the case of Japan, Korea and China. Emphasis is placed on the development of resource circulatory system for the minimisation of various wastes and emissions of green house gases (GHG), toxic gases and polluting particulates. The minimisation includes:Rationalisation of iron and steelmaking processes; Implementation of available relevant measures/technologies; Life cycle assessment in designing steel from semis to assembled products; Reduction, reuse and recycling of materials and energies; and Utilisation of core competence technologies to process domestic and industrial wastes. In view of global nature of the above wastes- and emission-issues, inter-industrial linkage and international cooperation across the borders in the Asian countries have become more important. Inter-industrial linkage definitely serves to cut back the wastes and emissions. Examples of such linkage and factors influencing the sustainability of the linkage are described with expectation for further development of the linkage. Importance of international cooperation cannot be overstressed under the circumstances where steel production in China exceeded 220 Mt and world production exceeded 945 Mt in 2003 and is still increasing. Industrial plants located in the province of Quebec, Canada, are subjected to large variations of the ambient air temperature, Building ventilation systems of these plants must have some flexibility in order to meet industrial hygiene standards (TLV for chemical substances, heat stress and cold stress) at any time of the year, The building ventilation of a bath treatment plant of an aluminium smelter in Quebec was examined under summer and winter conditions, Part of the plant has periodic emissions of hydrogen fluoride gas and heat from hot anode butts, CFD modeling was used to optimise the building ventilation of the bath treatment plant, The present study proposes a modified building ventilation system, which improves the internal environment, complies with industrial hygiene standards and also reduces heating costs by 20 % during winter.
