The selection of control system equipment for a mineral plant is based on several criteria, including opera tor interface, supervisory capabilities, ease of maintenance, ease of programming and configuration, compatibility with auxiliary control equipment, and total cost. The paper discusses the technical evaluation procedure with respect to control system equipment available today.

"The effects of mixed collectors on some physicochemical parameters (thin film lifetime, kinetics of expansion of the three-phase contact, equilibrium three-phase contact angle and surface tension) involved in the elementary act of flotation were investigated experimentally.We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko et al (1970) to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates at 1:1 molar ratio. The experiments were performed at a range of concentrations at pH 6.5. The equilibrium contact angle was measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Sheludko method (Mingins and Scheludko, 1979). The surface tension was measured by the method of Wilhelmy (Adamson, 1960). It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system."

Generally, water-soluble polymers are effective in convergence of water jet ejected from a nozzle as they add viscosity to water. However, excessive additional polymers (added to keep water viscous) could increase friction on the contrary. Therefore, we have totally modified the jetting system from every possible aspect, such as the shape and upstream conditions of a nozzle in order to keep the flow spread to the minimum as stated in my presentation.

Joy Mining Machinery has developed a new generation of ultra-heavy shields for Anglo Coal Australia?s Moranbah North Mine in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland. These are the largest two-leg longwall shields yet produced by Joy. The longwall at Moranbah North posed a number of challenges, among them a thick, inclined, sometimes undulating seam with increasing depths. The result of this was the need for larger, heavier, more powerful roof supports. Knowing that future longwalls would be going deeper, mine management determined that shield yield ratings of at least 1,750 t (1,930 st) was what would be required.

Develop and demonstrate a lightweight material that has low thermal conductivity and that would be suitable for placement using shotcrete methods. This material could be applied in deep, hot mines where mine drifts must be insulated. Its use would decrease mine refrigeration needs and reduce energy costs.

Gaby Copper Mining?s Gabriela Mistral property is located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, at an altitude of 2,660 m (8,727 ft) above sea level. The reserve contains an estimated 562 Mt (620 million st) of oxide ore with an average grade of 0.41 percent total copper. The mine went into production in 2008. Gaby Copper faced the problem of having no reliable way to measure the solids level. This is a challenge that exists throughout the mining industry, where dust in the air and accumulation of solids on a sensor make accurate measurements difficult in areas such as transfer chutes, the rock box underneath crushers, silos and anywhere else that information is needed on the level of solids. The next-generation technology in the Sitrans LR560 radar from Siemens addresses this challenge. With a frequency of 78 GHz ? higher than previous generations of radar ? it provides a more robust signal for measuring in areas where there are high levels of dust accumulation. The Sitrans LR560 provides a signal beam angle of four degrees, significantly narrower than any other product on the market can offer.

Restrictions on fugitive emissions and crushing operations continue to get tighter. Although fugitive dust control in the gold mining industry has historically been difficult, there are now several options that can make dust control both effective and efficient. Using new technology, mine operators can now design and maintain a dust control program that can reduce product losses, decrease equipment failure, cut cleaning costs, and meet air quality compliance standards as well as provide a better working environment. This paper discusses the sources of fugitive emissions related to the gold mining and crushing operations and describes effective new control methods.

JOHN LIVERMORE CHRISTIE belongs to that group of metallurgists who entered the industrial field during World War I and have been responsible for many of the important metallurgical developments since that time. He was born in Montclair, N. J., on Jan. 31, 1894. After graduating from Montclair High School he attended Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, received his Ph.B. degree in chemistry in 1915 and that same year was employed by the Bridgeport Brass Co. in its laboratory. Among his first duties was the return to Sheffield Scientific School for two years of graduate work in metallography under C. H. Mathewson; receiving his M.S. degree in 1917. Thus we see him becoming one of that group of eminent physical metallurgists who, with Dr. Mathewson's teaching as a foundation, have done outstanding work in metallurgy.

Operators concerned with the destruction of their piping by acid mine waters will be interested in the method by which this problem was solved at the Cardiff mine of the Homer group. Rubber lined, or acid resisting metal pipes were found too expensive. Casting concrete lining in pipe would have required a minimum thickness of one inch, thus excessively reducing the pipe's diameter, as well as taking twenty four hours per length of pipe. The Naylor Pipe Co. of Chicago, having experimented with centrifugal lining of pipe with concrete, provided information which eventually solved the problem. An experimental plant was constructed as shown, and the following procedure developed : (1) Kerosene is used to remove the interior oil coating of new pipe. Closed with blank flanges, the pipe is revolved for eight minutes at varying speeds. Stopping and starting the motor achieves a good washing action. The kerosene is then drained off, and similar washing action with caustic soda removes any excess. Swabbing in done with burlap fastened to a 1/2-in. pipe. The 1980's has seen a revolution in gold mine developments in Australasia. We are witnessing a near ten fold increase in all phases of gold mine development ranging from exploration through to production. Ounces produced have yet to mirror this activity but have increased from a low point of 600,000 in 1980 to 1,800,000 ounces in 1985 in Australia alone. In 1980 the region had less than 10 gold mines, yet 14 new mines started production in 1985 and as many as 28 might start up in the next 18 months. Developing gold mines in the 1980's in Australasia has not been the easiest of jobs, yet the great number of new developments suggest that we have entered a new era that will rank in history along with the 1850's, 1890's and 1930's as high points.Within- our Australasian region two very distinctive styles of gold deposits are being discovered and developed. On the Australian mainland the new mines are in geologically old rocks and are mostly the low grade haloes surrounding worked out high grade deposits. Most are limited life open pit operations depending on recent innovative carbon-in-pulp or heap leach technology. In the Pacific Islands region the style of discoveries are geologically recent, large bulk-low-grade deposits often geologically analogous to porphyry copper deposits. These deposits are typically 10 to 20 times larger than those being proved up on the Australian mainland.

Screens serve several important functions in CIL and CIP processes for gold extraction. One important screen application known as interstage screening allows slurry to be continuously transfered through a series of CIL or CIP tanks while retaining activated carbon in the tank. In some cases, this has been accomplished by using airlifts to carry slurry containing activated carbon to an external screen which separates carbon as oversize and returns it to the tank by gravity. The undersize slurry advances to the subsequent tank. More recently this has been accomplished using launder screens and Kambalda type screens. These are essentially static screens that rely on air blasts or mechanical sweepers to clear carbon away from the screen surfaces.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize and discuss a variety of site specific conditions which are typically evaluated as part of the engineering design process for heap leach pads, solution control ponds, and associated facilities. The following sections will focus primarily on the topographic, climatologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical evaluations critical to selection of heap leach sites, and selection of a preferred heap leach configuration or method. Other important considerations in the design of a heap leach project, including evaluation of ore properties and leachability, pregnant solution processing requirements, spent ore neutralization/disposal requirements, and other anticipated reclamation requirements are beyond the scope of this paper are not addressed in any detail.

Tunnels and other underground structures are typically designed using ground-structure interaction models instead of traditional structural analysis programs. This allows for the degree of load sharing etween the two odies to e calculated allowing for a more efcient design. hile modern codes outline the use of limit states with factors on applied actions, limit states are not typically compatible with ground-structure interaction models. Consequently, the engineer is left to develop rational methods for incorporating load factors into their analyses. Several methods can be considered, including the Largest Factor Method, Averaging Method, Subtraction Method, and Split Factor Method. This paper discusses the approaches, compares their effects using a case example, and provides a recommendation for designers.

Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

Prof. Henry M. Howe, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*):—The results presented in Mr. Mathewson's paper are of very great interest. Perhaps the most interesting is that shown in Table I. and Fig. 1, in which the arsenic decreases in 10 min. from 0.22 to 0.07 per cent. This is such a large decrease that it is to be hoped that Mr. Mathewson will verify it by repeating his tests with a matte of similar composition. This is particularly to be desired, because the simultaneous removal of sulphur appears to be very small. All three blows further agree in showing that the removal of arsenic is in the very early part of the blow. The fact that the removal of arsenic then ceases abruptly cannot be explained completely by the fact that the arsenic has fallen so low as by its lowness to resist further removal, because in the first blow the arsenic becomes stationary at 0.06 per cent., whereas in the third blow it does not become stationary until it has fallen to 0.034 per cent. The abrupt ending of the removal of arsenic is more likely to find its explanation in the composition of the slag, and it is to be hoped that Mr. Mathewson will supplement these extremely valuable data with others in which the composition of the slag at the same time shall be given. The sudden rise of arsenic toward the end of the third blow I suppose must be referred to an error in sampling or analysis.
