"The French Mine (formerly the Oregon) is 4 miles by road south of the Nickel Plate Mine. It lies on the steep eastern slope of the Similkameen River valley at elevation 4,000 feet, between Cahill and Winters Creeks.The property was discovered in .1901 and bought 4 years later by Messrs. French and Deardorf. It was developed in a modest way by the owners and by several companies until 1947, without success. The spectacular showings of bornite and chalcopyrite in the outcrop drew attention to its possibilities for copper rather than gold. Diamond drilling by the owners in 1947 yielded several high-grade gold intersections and created new interest. In 1949 the property was purchased by Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited. Exploration drilling and geological mapping outlined sufficient ore to commence production in 1950. Except for a few months each winter the operation has been continuous, and to the end of 1954 had produced almost 30,000 tons of high grade ore. The ore is crushed at the mine and hauled 8 miles by truck to the Company mill at Hedley, where it is treated together with the ore from Nickel Plate.Regional GeologyThe country rock consists of brown tuff, flows, limestone, and cherty formations belonging to the Nicola group (Rice 1947) of Triassic age. West of and just below the mine is a large mass of granodiorite which is part of the same body that underlies Nickel Plate Mountain. Bedding attitudes in the mine area are locally complicated, but dips are generally less than 45 degrees. To the south and below the mine the beds stand almost vertical, continuing downward with this attitude for 2,000 feet to Winters Creek. The main granodiorite contact is also steep, conforming to the sedimentary formations, whereas northward towards Nickel Plate it dips gently to the northwest, slightly flattter than the thick westerly dipping pile of sediments above it. The interpretation of this structure by Billingsley (1936) is that the French mine lies near the crest of the large northeasterly trending asymmetrical anticline which contains in its gently dipping western limb the Nickel Plate orebodies. The granodiorite body conforming roughly to this shape seems to occupy the core of the anticline. Sill-like prongs of granodiorite extend upward to the east from the main mass, outcropping over wide areas at the head of Winters Creek (Figure 1). There is a possibility that overthrusting from the west, similar to that on Nickel Plate Mountain, occurs not far below the French mine.An interesting feature of the granodiorite-sediment contact is that where it dips gently westward no alteration exists in the sediments, but where it has a steep front pronounced heat effects are indicated by the presence of a thousand-foot-wide zone of reddish garnet skarn."

Metallographic techniques developed from studies of corrosion films and electroplated coatings on aluminum alloys, are discussed. These methods, the result of work at the Naval Research Establishment, give extremely flat fields at the interface despite the large difference in hardness, in cases where electrolytic polishing could not be used. Techniques to overcome the similarity in refractive index of immersion oil, aluminum ox1d~, and mounting plastic are also considered, as are methods for improving visual and photographic contrast in areas of interest. A device for marking specimens is also de-scribed. ELE•CTROLYTIC polishing is inapplicable in the study of surface films on aluminum, whether corrosion films or electrodeposits. Mechanical procedures must there-fore be followed. Sample flatness and edge retention are of paramount importance. Special measures are required in the study of oxide films, because of the close proximity of the refractive indices of aluminum oxide, mounting plastic, and immersion oil.

Certain steel mill wastes contain significant amounts of zinc oxide due to the use of galvanized scrap during the steel making process. Typically electric arc furnace (EAF), and basic oxygen process (BOP) flue dusts contain 20 to 30% zinc oxide and 40 to 50% iron oxides, along with smaller quantities of lead and cadmium. These materials can be recovered from the flue dusts by using a proven rotary hearth furnace (RHF) process. By-products of the recycling operation include a crude zinc oxide fume, which is captured in a baghouse filtering system, and sponge iron that may be recycled into the steel making operation. Crude zinc oxide properties plus the operating experience from two commercial RHF installations utilizing MR&E's DRyIron™ Process will be presented.

One function of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is assessing potential economic impacts of federal land withdrawal policies. This often requires performing economic ana1ysls for an area with limited geologic information available. Input to the economic decision process relies heavily on estimates of mine and mill costs for the potential resources in the area being considered. A methodology for performing these cost estimates was needed to address this situation.

Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators have become standard equipment in gold grinding circuits for recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG). The downstream benefits of installing a gravity circuit are well understood, and in general, if there is a reasonable amount of GRG in the ore, a gravity circuit is usually installed. The benefits of gold gravity recovery have also been well documented, with a large database of successful case studies. As well, predicting production scale gravity recovery results ahead of installing gravity has become a common practice. The missing link between lab and full scale has always been the ability to predict the recovery benefit of installing gravity ahead of actually doing so. Being able to predict the recovery benefit in advance would help an operation in assessing the economic benefit and help justify the capital costs of the gravity circuit with much less uncertainty.

Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD) is used in the production of computer circuit boards and metal shapes in nickel, gold, copper, cobalt, etc. All varieties of .MOCVD use the decomposition of a vapour of organometallic compounds to produce different forms of ultra-pure metals, or alloys. CVD Manufacturing's proprietary MOCVD process has been adapted and developed to produce commercially ultra-pure metal shapes, metal powders, and metal foams. Therefore, it is a purification process. The typical process has three steps. First, a volatile metal organic compound is produced from volumetrically contaminated metals, metal oxides, etc. Typical feed materials are metal powders, ores, concentrates, or a slurry of metals and contaminants. Secondly, the volatile. metal organic compound is purified by fractional distillation. Thirdly, the purified metal organic compound is decomposed into different forms of ultra-pure metals, such as net shapes, powders, or metal foams. A mixture of metals can be purified either by the selective production of volatile materials, or a separation can be achieved during the second step, in the fractional distillation stage. The purification and recycling of metals by the MOCVD process will be discussed, particularly with regard to nickel, aluminum, gold, the platinum group and other metals.

Bismuth, one of the heavier chemical elements, is a pinkish metalloid that is chemically related to antimony. It is a byproduct of lead and tungsten extraction and, to a lesser extent, of copper and tin extraction. Antimony is a metalloid and less heavy chemical element, an extraction coproduct of metals such as lead, silver and gold. While both bismuth and antimony are metalloids, their major uses are as chemical compounds. Different individuals have calculated the boundary stresses around elliptical openings in an infinite elastic medium for various conditions of loading. With caution, such calculations are useful in indicating stress trends in mining. This paper illustrates an application to caving operations and suggests that abnormal field stress would have an adverse effect. Introduction GELDART and Udd (1), applying elastic theory, confirmed, and set out graphically, the stress distributions on the surface of elliptical openings with axis ratios varying from 1.0 (a circle) to infinity (a crack). The loading conditions varied from uniaxial to hydrostatic, and inclinations for the opening, with respect to the stress axis, varied from 0° to 90°. As most mine openings can be generalized into this elliptical conception, the usefulness of the presentation lies in the fact that given reasonable estimates for the stress ratio, the axis ratio, and its inclination, then the trend in stress concentrations as an opening develops can be readily approximated.

It is a pleasure to speak to this group about special crusher installations which are in the bauxite and phosphate rock processing industries. The installations to be discussed demonstrate the variety of conditions, materials, and results desired which must be evaluated before a selection is made from the specialized crusher technology available today. Those of you who are closely involved with phosphate rock and phosphate products processing will find some of this information a bit interesting and perhaps alien to your own descriptions or every day references. "In this research, pyrite cinder which contains 53.51% Fe and 0.54% Pb was processed by magnetic roasting separation to obtain a concentrate with 64.62% Fe and 0.56% Pb. The concentrate was then leached with hydrochloric acid to remove lead. Several technological parameters which may influence the removal efficiency were investigated: the mass fraction of hydrochloric acid, pulp density, the leaching time and temperature. On the conditions that the mass fraction of hydrochloric acid of 5%, pulp density of 30%, the leaching time of 30 minutes and leaching temperature of20°C, the lead content in the concentrate was reduced to 0.19%. The product was suitable for agglomeration and pelletization. Through the analysis of the lead distribution and phase change during the whole process, the mechanism of lead separation from pyrite cinder was analyzed.IntroductionPyrite cinder is rich in iron, which defines its most extensive and effective use as raw materials for iron making. However, some pyrite cinders contain much non-ferrous metals, which is detrimental for the iron making process. Lead, one of the harmful elements, will destroy the blast furnace lining. Besides, it causes pollution of the environment[1]. Therefore it is necessary to remove excessive lead before entering the blast furnace. To separate the lead from pyrite cinder, much research was done, including flotation, high temperature evaporation and leaching. High temperature evaporation consumed too much energy. The flotation was difficult to obtain high- grade iron ore concentrate[2]. Majority of the leaching was direct leaching of pyrite cinder, which was also difficult to get high-grade iron ore concentrate[3]. This article explored the magnetic roasting method to get high-grade iron ore concentrate, acid leaching method of the concentrate to remove excessive lead, providing guidance for the efficient utilization of pyrite cinder."

The capacity of the Outokumpu Pori refinery is today about 125 000 mt in 1998. The anode slime amount is about 700-800 mt. The copper is removed with pressure leaching. Selenium roasting is done with the gas roasting. The doré smelting in the furnace is done with the tilting rotating converter with oxy-fuel burner (TROP). Doré anodes are treated in the silver electrolysis. Gold is recovered from the gold mud with the quick hydrochloric acid leaching process. The important point in the leaching is to get into contact the solid copper with the oxygen and liquid. Outokumpu has an efficient agitator for this purpose. The GLS-agitator (GLS=gas, liquid and solid) is powerful for mixing oxygen, liquid and solid together. The current production in Pori plant is 40000 kg of silver, 5000 kg gold, 40000 kg of selenium and one hundred kilograms of platinum-palladium concentrate.

The United States is dependent on foreign imports for about 80 percent of its ilmenite, about 60 percent of its rutile, and virtually all of its monazite. Nearshore marine sand deposits and beach-complex sediments in the southeastern United States are important domestic sources of ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, and a number of other less well known economic heavy-mineral (HM) species. Because global onshore reserves of placer titanium minerals may fall short of demand in as few as 20 years, offshore research in HM placers will become more important. The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) defined by the shoreline and the 200-m isobath varies in width for the modern U.S. coastline from a fraction of a kilometer to about 150 km offshore of Cape Cod, Mass., and includes an area of about 3.91 x 105 km2. It probably contains 3-7 x 1011 m3 of sand and gravel which may locally contain commercially exploitable placer HM deposits.

"Production of strontium metal from its oxide was studied under the pressure of 1-5 mbar by methalothermic process. SrO with 99 % purity was used in the experiments. Effects of Al powder addition (100, 200, 300 % of stoichiometric ratio) and time were investigated on recovering of metallic strontium. Effects of BaO addition (100 %, 200 %, 300 %) was also investigated. The final residues were examined for their chemical composition. XRD, AAS and Flame Photometer were used for chemical analysis. More than 96 % of strontium metal recovery can be obtained.IntroductionStrontium is an element which is used in many advanced technology applications. Barium strontium titanat, strontium bismuth titanat, and strontium bismuth tantalat thin films are promising materials in ferroelectric and Schottky-based microelectronics technologies, especially for memory applications. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques as magnetron sputtering, thermal evaporation and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are the most widely used methods for growth of these thin films [1-3]. In these techniques high-purity of Sr metal is used as evaporation sources and sputtering targets. Furthermore, metallic strontium is used as a ""getter"" in electron tubes, and as an alloying elements in aluminum alloys [4].The most used Sr compound is SrCO3 and widespread process used in production of SrCO3 is the hydrometallurgical carbonation of celestite. Although there are considerable amount of Selestite reserves, SrCO3 and strontinum metal are not being produced in Turkey, yet [5].Concentrated celestite (SrSO4) is conversed to SrCO3 in carbonate media. Black ash and direct conversion processes are currently used methods. There are many satisfactory studies about hydrometallurgical carbonation of celestite and decomposition of SrCO3 [6, 7]. Since strontium metal is produced from it’s oxide (SrO), SrCO3 needs to be decomposed to SrO."

This paper is based on the accident prevention pro-gram carried out in the coal mines of Alberta. It defines the role of the Alberta Mines Branch and of The Work-men's Compensation Board, and relates how a safety pro-gram was initiated. The formation of the Alberta Class 1 Mining Safety Council is also described. The responsibilities of both management and the individual worker are then outlined, and the main features of a successful accident prevention program are delineated. T HE purpose of this paper is not to repeat generalities and platitudes about industrial safety, but rather to relate the experience of Alberta coal mines during the past number of years in their efforts to keep accidents to a minimum. It has been learned from experience that many basic principles are as sound today as they were 20 years ago. How-ever the complexities of modern mining methods and the modern man or miner have created problems that did not exist then.

The production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) from its minerals such as ilmenite is challenging, and subsequent isolation of titanium from TiO2 is even more difficult because of the metal-oxygen bond strength. Currently, titanium sponge is mainly produced via the Kroll process, which is energy intensive and generates large quantities of waste. A number of international research groups have come up with technologies for the production of titanium metal. However, none of them have been commercialised, because of engineering or economic issues. The team at Bradford have confirmed that ultra-pure titanium powders can be separated from TiO2 powder through metallothermic reduction and are working to scale up the process.

The production of primary aluminium can potentially lead to metal that, with minimum treatment, meets a high purity standard. Smelters that can achieve a significant proportion of their production in this manner have a competitive edge which is of growing importance as the use grows for such items as compact discs and the like. Superimposed on the desire to produce high quality metal are stringent environmental requirements that the industry must adhere to. The environmental 'legislation focuses on fluoride emissions and the approach adopted is towards a zero waste management philosophy. The fluoride recycling process does, however, result in volatile impurities being captured and recycled to the cell. Aluminium has an extremely high reduction potential and this results in a significant proportion of the recycled impurities being reduced at the electrolyte metal interface and thus contaminating the metal. This paper reviews sources of impurities and the impact of the operating procedures adopted on metal treatment.

The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Application of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies - the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing internet infrastructure - to the mining industry is discussed. IoT technologies are aimed at making projects safer, better optimised and more economic and are applicable to current or new underground or open-pit mines, regardless of size. Two examples are presented of successful implementation of IoT technologies, the Chelopech gold, copper and silver mine in Bulgaria, where production has increased from 500 000 to 2 000 000 tonnes/y and communication costs have been reduced by US $2 500 000 over 2 y, and the Pilbara project in Western Australia, where remotely controlled wirelessly connected autonomous trucks have covered ca. 3 000 000 miles and hauled almost 250 000 000 t of ore since 2008
