The calculation of the liberation spectrum in the product from continuous milling operations is a problem of considerable importance, and it is difficult to solve because the population balance equation must be integrated in two-dimensional space. Complete solutions require a very detailed knowledge of the complex interactions between the fracture patterns and the mineralogical ore texture when brittle particles are subject to impact fracture. Most of the liberation models that have been developed to date apply only to batch comminution processes and under these conditions the liberation problem can be studied in isolation. When the comminution is continuous and forms a unit operation in a flowsheet that includes classification and separation operations, the situation is very different, and then the liberation of the minerals must be described when single particles of known mineralogical composition are fractured. Important industrial examples are conventional milling circuits closed by hydrocyclone and regrind mills in flotation plants. This paper presents an efficient computational algorithm for the calculation of the liberation spectrum produced by continuous milling operations. The algorithm relies heavily on the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram. The modifications that are required to make this diagram apply to practical ore minerals, and the internal structure of this diagram can be established using single-particle fracture on mono-size, mono-grade material but suitable liberation models are essential to interpret the data in terms of the cross transfer coefficients required for the population balance procedure. Throughout Mexican history, mining has been an important, traditional activity. Before the "Discovery of America," native miners worked a variety of deposits throughout the country, including Mixtec gold and gem mines in Oaxaca State and Aztec gold, silver and copper from mines in Michoacán. The 500th anniversary of Mining in Mexico after the "Discovery of America" was initiated by the Mexican mining sector on April 15, 1991. As early as 1548, when the Guanajuato mining district was discovered, Mexico had become a leading world producer of precious metals. Since then, Mexican mineral production has developed in cycles, responding to changing technological, economic and political conditions. During the 20th century, Mexican mine output reached its peak in the decades of the 1930s and 1940s, when it was producing about 40% of the world's silver, 15% of its lead, 10% of its zinc, 4% of its copper and 3.5% of its gold. In 1990, by way of contrast, these percentages of world output stood at 13.5% for silver, 4.7% for lead, 4.1% for zinc, 3.2% for copper, and 0.43% for gold. The lowest production levels were recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, when Mexicanization of the industry and increasing state controls weakened mineral economics to a point that mineral exploration budgets were sharply reduced or eliminated, along with the industry's future. Only the noble old mining districts continued to supply production, with occasional eruptions of "bonanzas" and new extensions in established mining districts.

Iron Mountain Mine Rehabilitation Project Brief History The Iron Mountain Mine is located in Northern California approximately 12 miles northwest of Redding. The ore body is a large, very dense pyritic intrusion, discovered in 1860, and initially minded for silver. The silver played out quickly and 34 years later the ore body was mined for copper. Copper mining was scheduled to cease in 1939, but WWII prolonged the closure. After WWII, the pyrite ore was mined to produce sulfuric acid. In 1949 when large amounts of cheaper sulfuric acid were being generated by the oil industry the underground mine shut down. Little was done with the site conditions until 1970 when the U.S. Bureau of Mines began monitoring the pH of the effluent. The initial pH readings were around 2.0. This was lower than anyone expected. Laboratory tests showed that when the ore from the mine was submerged in water, the pH of the water would stabilize above 4.0. However, the pH got steadily lower. In 1989 with the ph around 0.7, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required the owner to build a capture and treatment facility. During this initial period, the majority of the effort was spent on the treatment plant. The relationship between the mine owner and the EPA was basically an adversarial relationship from the very beginning. In 2001, North Pacific Research was hired to upgrade the capture and control facility. The general layout of the Iron Mountain Mine is shown in Figure 1.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a miniature, portable two-level oxygen-deficiency alarm and produced three prototype models. Each operates from a 4.2-v dc power source, and the highest current drain of any model is 80 ma. An electrochemical cell, which produces an electrical output in proportion to the partial pressure of oxygen to which it is exposed, is used as an oxygen detector. The output of the cell is applied to an electronic circuit that detects two different levels of oxygen percentage below that of normal air, and produces distinct audible signals at these levels. The hazard alarm mode is activated when the oxygen percentage first drops below normal and produces a 500-cps "beep" tone with an intermittency of 1 cps. The danger mode produces a continuous 500-cps audible signal when the oxygen percentage drops still lower.

Profits in the crushed-stone industry, as in any other, represent the difference between selling price and production cost. When consumer demand increases rapidly, as occurred in the crushed-stone industry from 1918 to 1927, selling prices tend to rise. Cost of production usually rises, also, owing to the expense of expanding facilities, searching for and developing new quarries, and purchasing, installing, and operating new equipment. Frequently, also, the inattention of managements to the details of operating costs is responsible for their increase. This is not due to negligence but rather to the necessity of confining attention to the problems involved in producing material to supply orders. When market conditions change and consumer demand becomes stabilized or contracts, the producer's attention usually is directed to assuring the orders necessary to keep his enlarged facilities busy. Hence, competition increases and soiling prices decline.

"The prediction of surface deformations due to underground mining operations has been a long recognized practice with case studies documented as far back as 1556 in Georgius Agricola's De Re Metallica (Latin for On the Nature of Minerals). There is currently increased public awareness and regulatory scrutiny on the potential impacts of underground longwall and second mining operations, but this time the focus is placed on environmental impacts to overlaying bodies of water such as streams, rivers, wetlands, lakes, etc. (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015). Community residents and environmental groups, as well as federal and state regulatory agencies, have often cited adverse stream impacts and demanded stronger measures and scrutiny in issuing mining and reclamation permits (Booth, 2006). Mining companies are required to focus on the protection of sensitive bodies of water through the monitoring of stream flow and water quality, management and rehabilitation techniques, as well as the adoption of ""no mining zones,"" which potentially sterilize large portions of minable coal reserves. This paper examines the use of an empirical modeling approach for the protection of surface streams based on evaluation of ground strain magnitudes. Utilizing enhanced features of the Surface Deformation Prediction Software (SDPS), ground movements can be predicted accurately in the vicinity of surface bodies of water. The modeling of ground movements can aid in establishing optimum extraction sequences, while the magnitudes of anticipated subsidence can be used in the evaluation of mitigation plans when undermining surface bodies of water. INTRODUCTION When utilizing high recovery underground mining methods, such as longwall or room-and-pillar mining, the movement and deformation of the overburden propagates toward the surface and may affect the integrity of overlying surface streams (Peng et al, 1996). Published studies cite three major mechanisms of subsidence as most likely to impact streams: displacement, slope, and strain. While subsidence-induced vertical displacement cause little structural damage to the stream bed, it may create adverse drainage and stream flow issues as the subsidence trough allows for ponding (Dawkins, 2003). Subsidence initiated changes to the slope, or tilt, of a stream may have adverse effects on water flow. As the stream enters the subsidence trough, the gradient increases providing potential erosion control problems. When exiting the subsidence trough, a reduction of the gradient may inhibit stream flow, causing localized ponding (Peng, 2008). While vertical displacement and tilt both may have detrimental effects to surface streams, subsidence induced strains have been documented as being the most damaging to surface streams and structures causing distortion, fractures, or failure (Singh, 1992). When stream beds are subjected to high tensile strain, tensile cracks may form at the surface level allowing for the direct loss of stream flow through fissures. When stream beds are located in areas of high compressive strain, rock layers forming the stream bed can fail as the stream bed, ""ruptures,"" upward blocking stream flow or having the stream diverted into the facture zone at the base (Iannacchione, et. al., 2010)"

Data given in this paper indicate that certain relations exist between different characteristics of sandstone. These relations are not rigid, for all sandstones are more or less heterogeneous. Not every increment of a given horizon follows exactly the relationship; however, studying a reservoir as a whole from a large number of samples, definite trends are found to exist. Apparently nature's processes of sedimentation and diagenesis are such as to give some degree of uniformity. Average relationships are valuable because electrical measurements in a borehole comprise a considerable volume of rock near the hole. Also, it is desirable that a given producing reservoir be studied as a unit. In a permeable reservoir whose pores are filled with a saline solution, it was found that the total porosity and the type of sandstone influence the relationship between its electrical resistivity and the RO and the resistivity of the brine R,. The relation can be expressed by the following empirical equation, Ro = R10O— [i] where 0 is the porosity expressed as a fraction and the numerical value of the exponent lies between 1.8 to 2.0 for consolidated sandstones, and is about 1.3 for clean, unconsolidated packs. This equation indicates that an appropriate electrical log can be used to estimate the porosity of a saline water-bearing reservoir when Rw and the type of rock are known. The fraction R0rw, is called the "formation resistivity factor." It reflects the effect of the nonconducting rock structure on the resistivity of the salt water that fills the tortuous paths through which the electricity must pass. The formation resistivity factor F is found to be related to permeability k. In this case the type of rock plays an important role, as shown by the relation F = ak-b [2] where the values of a and b must be determined experimentally for each horizon. Therefore Eq. I rather than Eq. 2 is used when it is desired to determine the value of F, because small changes in rock structure particularly in the pore size are not critical. Another useful relation, R = R0S- [3] where R = resistivity of rock when partially saturated with brine and partly with oil or gas, S = fraction of the pore space filled with brine, and n equals approximately 2 for both unconsolidated and consolidated sandstone, shows that the connate water of an oil or gas reservoir can be estimated in situ from a resistivity log. Equation 3 shows that in order to estimate the water content of a reservoir a knowledge of R and Ro is essential. The first value can be obtained from the electrical log when all factors influencing the resistivity curve can be properly taken into account. If the safety factor of a mine hoisting rope is checked for the lowest depth, is the rope then safe for all levels? The answer here is no. A new set of volues is proposed. HOISTS for metal mines are seldom designed for one particular depth. They are intended for an ultimate load and depth with a given speed but are first used to hoist from a shallower depth, gradually working to the ultimate as development progresses. Sometimes the mine is not worked on the upper levels because of the kind and grade of ore, the mining of which depends on market conditions. In this case the hoist may be used in the same working shift to lift ore, for example, from the 1200 and the 4400-ft level. This means that the safety factor of the rope should be considered not only when it hoists from the greatest depth, but also when it hoists from the upper levels. According to present safety factor standards, a hoisting rope can have ample safety margin when hoisting from the lower or lowest level and still be shy of sufficient safety margin when hoisting from the upper levels. This will be shown by curves presented in this paper. The safety factor of a hoisting rope as defined by the U. S. Bureau of Mines' is the ratio of the static load to the tensile strength of the rope. It is calculated by dividing the breaking strength of the rope* In Fig. 1 curves A and B are plotted against the vertical suspended distance, which is the abscissa, and the factor of safety, the ordinates. Curve C is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of curve A and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety for new rope for any particular depth. Curve D is a smooth curve drawn through the midpoints of the steps of Curve B and would more closely represent the minimum factor of safety when ropes should be discarded for any particular depth. If a new rope were applied with a minimum factor of safety, then the vertical distance or ordinate under curve D for any particular depth, divided by the vertical distance or ordinate under curve C, would represent the minimum percent of remaining area intact that could be allowed before the rope would be discarded. Also, that section of the ordinate between curve C and curve D is proportional to the section of the area of the new rope that could be allowed for wear and broken wires. Considering that point at 2500 ft on the chart, the ratio do to co would be the minimum percent of rope area remaining at the point of discard. The ratio of that portion of the ordinate cd to co would represent maximum percent of area of a new rope available for wear and broken wires.

The problem of properly controlling the movements of underground trains in the Emma Nevada and Morris Brooks workings of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation of Kimberly, Nev., became more complex as the rate of production increased. Ore from these mines, which are connected through a 7000-ft. single-track haulageway (Fig. I), is hoisted through the Emma Nevada shalt. All production to date has been from one level. Because of heavy ground, even on the main haulage horizon, experience has shown that it is necessary to have a minimum cross section in the drifts, thus making it impractical to have a double track system. In 1937, production was 3000 tons per day; in 1938 it was increased to 6000 tons per day and in 1940 to 9000 tons per day. Each increase necessitated a revision in the method of controlling the underground traffic. In 1937 the tramming signal system consisted of a few signal lights in the main haulage drift. These lights were two 100-watt bulbs in a metal box that had one green and one red lens on each side. The box was mounted on the underside of a drift cap timber and could be seen For a considerable distance. The lights were so arranged that all boxes showed either red or green at the same time and all were controlled by a magnetic contactor at the entrance to each lateral drift. When the lights showed green, the main haulage was clear of traffic and a train could enter it. As the motor entered the main haulage drift, the motorman pulled the cord of the magnetic contactor switch, thus changing all the main haulage lights to red, which indicated that no other train could use the main haulage until the first train had turned into a lateral drift. When a train left the main line, its motorman pulled the cord connected with the magnetic contactors, causing the haulage lights to show green again. This arrangement permitted only one train at a time to use the main haulage and thus limited the number of train trips per shift, but it was satisfactory when the ore handled was only 3000 tons per day. Second SystEM Installed With a gradual increase in production it became necessary to place a train dispatcher in charge of all trains. He controlled their movements orally, giving his orders direct or by mine phone, instructing them where to load, when to leave for the station and when to return. His objective was to group several trains traveling in the same direction. Because of the human element involved, some mistakes were made. The danger of a serious collision was always possible. There was a 90° turn and curve in the underground haulageway, therefore travel in this section was always dangerous if mistakes were made in directing traffic. When the phrase "selection of coal for carbonization" is used, there is always the implied continuance of thought "to make good coke.'' The reason for this, of course, lies in the fact that, in almost all instances, when coal is carbonized coke is the principal product. Under certain conditions the yield of gas may also be a factor, but even here it must be secondary to the coke yield, for in every instance coke represents the largest single product of the process. The importance of coke to the byproduct industry has been considerably enhanced during the past 20 years because of the continuously decreasing financial returns of all the by-products. This fact will account, in part, for the rebirth of interest and investigation in the carbonization process during the past 10 years. Many papers have been written on this subject, with naturally divergent thoughts because of the diversity of interests, but in each instance the common aim was the same—the making of better coke. Scope of Investigation In perusing this literature, the writer was struck with the constantly recurring imposed condition of asking for better coke, but with the distinct unwillingness to make any concession to temperature of carbonization. When there is a high demand for coke, the only means by which the industry can increase the quantity is to shorten the coking time by an increase in temperature, or to increase the quantity of low-volatile coal, or both; and since in many instances the percentage of low-volatile coal can be increased only in small quantities, because of factors to be discussed later, the big increase must come from shortening the coking time. When this is done most of the improvement accomplished by the selection of the coals in the mixture is lost. It is not felt necessary in this paper to discuss the advantages of minimum ash and sulphur and other materials in coal. The value of minimum contents of these materials in coke is well established. When the use of coals high in these contents is dictated, the selection of coals, as we will consider it here, cannot apply to full advantage. The scope of this paper, then, will be to discuss the factors of inherent coal characteristics and operating procedures that influence coke quality, for they are fundamentally related and both must be considered if we are to attain our objective of better coke. A study of either must embrace a study of both simultaneously. To properly evaluate the influence of the coal and to help in the selection, we must first be able to appraise the coke, and interpret fairly the influence of the process in all of its aspects.
