IT is customary to plot crystallographic planes or axes on a Wulff stereographic net which is ruled with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. If a single crystal is placed at the center of a sphere, the coordinates of a crystallographic plane or axis are the coordinates of the point where the axis intersects the sphere. The standard (HKL) projection is the projection for which the sphere is rotated so that the (HKL) pole is at the center of the projection. Schiebold and Sachs' and many others have published standard projections for the more important planes of a cubic crystal. With Tables I and 11, it is possible to plot any plane (HKL) of a cubic crystal on a standard (001) projection if the absolute values of the individual H, K, and L are nine or less, which is almost always the case. Using the methods outlined by Barrett,' the standard (001) projection can be rotated so that any arbitrary plane is at the center of the projection. The tables are believed to be important for two reasons: 1—The heretofore published standard projections usually are not of the proper size to fit the stereographic nets available. With these tables a standard projection can be made which will be of exactly the proper size for the available stereographic net. 2—With the tables, planes that do not appear on the previously published standard projections can be easily plotted. For these reasons, the tables are especially useful in the study of optical reflections from etched surfaces and can also be used to make a standard projection for the axis which is normal to the macroscopic surface. (This axis can be found by X-ray or optical methods.) Then if the crystal is etched, the effect of the etchant can readily be determined by comparing the latitude and longitude of the reflecting planes (as determined with an optical goniometer) with the standard projection that has been prepared. CENTRIFUGAL force has been utilized for the dewatering of fine coal for over 50 years by means of machines commonly called centrifugal dryers. In any centrifuge the coal and water are subjected to a spinning action which usually inctedtocreases in intensity as the coal progresses through the machine. This spinning action, or the centrifugal force that it induces, tears water away from coal particles and produces a dewatered coal. The effectiveness of the dewatering action for any particular machine is governed by the size-consist of the coal and the centrifugal force imparted to the water on the coal. Four makes of centrifuge are currently being used to dewater fine bituminous coal in the United States. These include the vertical, basket-screen C.M.I. (Centrifugal and Mechanical Industries) Carpenter, Reineveld, and the horizontal solid-bowl Bird. The C.M.I. and Reineveld centrifuges are similar in construction and are variations of the Elmore centrifuge, varying principally in the slope of the basket, operating speed, size of perforations in the basket, and diameter of the basket. The same operating description suffices for both. These centrifuges are made up of two rotating elements, an outside conical screen frame and an inside solid cone which carries spiral pusher blades. The screen frame is supported by a hollow shaft, and the solid cone by a spindle shaft passing through the hollow shaft. Both the screen frame and the solid cone rotate at high speeds; the solid cone, with its scraping flights, rotating somewhat more slowly than the screen. The wet coal enters the machine at the top, falls on the cone, and is thrown against the screen by centrifugal force. The coal slides down the screen until it meets the upper end of the flights, where it is moved slowly along the flights until discharged at the bottom. The elfluent passes through the sieve basket or screen and discharges into a launder. The Carpenter centrifuge consists of a conical rotating element with a vertical axis, built up of three rows of perforated stainless-steel plates or stainless-steel wedge-wire or round-wire sections cut and rolled to conform to the surface of the cone. Wet material is delivered to a conical hopper inside the centrifuge casing and is distributed in a thin, even layer over the inner surface of the cone by a disk mounted on the rotor shaft. Impacting of the coal against the screen and the centrifugal force exerted as the material moves downwards creates a dewatering effect. The moisture is forced through the coal bed and then through the perforated plates of the basket, collecting in a circular trough built into the centrifuge. The effluent is conducted from the trough through the centrifuge casing by outlet pipes. The dewatered coal is discharged over the inside bottom edge of the rotor. The Bird centrifuge consists of a tank or truncated conical shell, which is revolved at the desired speed by means of a drive sheave. A screw conveyor rotates inside the cone or bowl at a slightly lower speed in the same direction of rotation. The feed entrance, in the center of the large end of the truncated cone, is high enough to allow formation of a pool of slurry. Adjustable effluent-discharge ports are located in the large end of the bowl so the level of the liquid can be regulated. The solids are moved forward by the screw conveyor as fast as deposited and carried above the level of the pool for an interval before leaving the bowl. Interest in mining narrow, vein-type ones has increased world-wide during the last few years despite the fact that prices of metals have not risen in proportion as production costs of mining, such as labour and energy. In many mines, where narrow ones are mined, the mining technique and equipment used have been poorly mechanised. The mining methods have been cut-and-fill or shrinkage stoping. Pneumatic jack-legs have been used for drilling and slushers have been used for loading. The methods that have been used can be called the 'first-generation' methods. Work has been very hard for miners. It has been dangerous and exhausting. Production volumes of mines, and a s a result of that, also profits have been low.

The design of effective ground support requires a sound understanding of the pre-mining state of stress in the stratum to be mined. Irregularities in the stress field encountered during multiseam mining are governed primarily by the previous mining in the surrounding strata. The aim of this study is to quantify the effects of rock mass transverse isotropy on the vertical stress redistribution in the rock strata beneath supercritical longwall panels. Wilson?s equations for determining the stress distribution induced in and beyond a single longwall panel after it has been mined have been adopted, and a plane strain finite element analysis of an elastic medium, together with the stress changes predicted by Wilson, was used to calculate the final pre-mining stresses in the underlying strata. Values of the independent shear modulus (G¢) of the rock strata, ranging from 0.1 to 1 times the isotropic shear modulus (Giso) in the plane of the strata, and a Poisson?s ratio (?) of 0.25 have been investigated. The key finding of this study is that the predicted magnitude of vertical stress in the transversely isotropic strata beneath a mined supercritical longwall panel is larger and changes more quickly with horizontal distance than is the case for an isotropic rock mass. This finding is of significance for the design of ground support measures in multi-seam mining operations.

Three drilled foundations for an elevated water-tank were instrumented, tested and monitored during construction and the first two years in service. One shaft was load tested by the Osterberg method. A void was detected in one shaft by cross-hole sonic logging, pulse-echo logging and concrete coring. The void was instrumented, hydrostatically tested and pressure grouted. The shaft was ?abandoned? and replaced by two smaller shafts with a straddle beam cap. One of the replacement shafts and the cap were instrumented. The strain that appeared in the abandoned shaft, the replacement shaft and the cap were monitored during the remainder of the construction, through the commissioning test and the first two years of service. The results demonstrate the precision and sensitivity of the vibrating wire strain gage.

At its simplest, the classification and characterisation of an orebody is a matter of Where, What and When. Where and with what spatial resolution are measurements taken, What properties are measured, and When are the data acquired, processed, and delivered to create the most value. This paper delves into how existing and near-term advances in measurement technologies, field automation, and whole-system-digitisation are combining to open new routes for mine and exploration productivity improvement. Commencing when the initial exploration hole is dug, the advancement in deployment of survey technology—from expert-operated, to driller-operated, to driller-integrated—is used to demonstrate a template for adoption of higher technology measurements. We then introduce and discuss the multi-use measurement as offering outsized returns from a single measurement run, highlighting two new technologies that acquire rock strength while drilling and downhole assay data as examples. For rock strength, we highlight a novel approach to determining Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) while drilling, its relationship to and advantages over Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE), and how it offers utility to multiple downstream processes. For downhole assay, we detail how a back-tophysics approach to Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) analysis offers significant advantages over other measurement methods and earlier implementations of PFTNA, generating a rich data set that can significantly extend and improve the information on which mining decisions are made. Finally, we discuss the possibilities enabled via optimising data delivery, collection, and curation— noting a fundamental limitation of historical systems and exploring the possibilities that will be unlocked by soon-to-market solutions that better enable Orebody Characterisation data to (virtually) move in space and time with rock material post-blasting. Ultimately, the value of optimising the Where, What, and When from point of measurement to the moment it generates maximum value will create greater life-of-asset production for a lower cost and energy input.

DOUG HALBE: Our next topic is one that I would think everyone might want to contribute to. I'm sure everyone here has had some experience in this area. If you haven't, I'd suspect you've never really run a mill. This is what we call "Horrible Spill Areas We Had When We Started Up the Plant and How We Fixed Them." Our next speaker has had a really great operating career. He had many years with Newmont in the Carlin area, and now he's executive vice president and chief operating officer of Independence Mining Company: Jim Komadina. I don't have to be nice to the speakers anymore, do I? [laughter] You may wonder why we picked Jim Komadina to give this talk. I was involved many years ago in the start-up of Newmont7s Gold Quarry plant. Jim held quite a responsible position there. I'm not going to say anymore, but I have in the back of my mind this picture of the pump floor and a rowboat and a guy rowing around on the pump floor. [laughter] Jim, was that you? [laughter] JIM KOMADINA: Probably. I wasn't responsible for the design. [laughter] Actually it's amazing. I've seen a lot of these plants and actually had the opportunity to walk around them, so when I say this, "Horrible spills I have seen and done," it's because I've been responsible for more than my fair share of them. But having seen a lot of spills, I will present a little bit of wisdom about how to prevent them.

"AbstractA laboratory work was performed to study the mechanical behavior of a Portuguese soft soil chemically stabilized with binders and reinforced with metallic fibers when subjected to tensile stresses. To this end and in order to compare the tensile strength results done by two different tests, there were conducted two types of experimental tests: Tensile Split Strength Tests (TS) and Direct Tensile Strength Tests (T). The samples tested had the same binder quantity and different fiber contents, which allowed the characterization of the tensile behavior of the stabilized and reinforced soil, as well as the definition of the best fiber content. Results show that the binder is the main parameter controlling the behavior of the stabilized and reinforced soil until failure, while the influence of the fibers is noticed mainly at the post-failure behavior. The comparison between the tensile strength done by T and TS tests shows that the tensile split test can be used to estimate the tensile strength, although its results are lower than those obtained by the direct tensile tests in general.IntroductionDue to its poor mechanical characteristics, the construction on soft soils presents difficulties that require the use of soil improvement techniques such as chemical stabilization. However, even when mixed with binders, the tensile strength of the stabilized soil is poor, requiring, in certain cases, the use of expensive steel reinforcement or metallic beams, with obvious impact on the final cost of the work. Thus, for the cases where the tensile strength is a design requirement, the soil stabilization should be design with another element, whose primary role is to give tensile strength to the improved soil (Teles 2013).To fill the lack of published studies focused on soft soils both chemically stabilized and reinforced with metallic fibers, the present research aims to analyze the behavior of the improved soil when subjected to tensile stresses. To support the research there were conducted direct tensile tests (T) to directly measure the tensile strength of the samples and tensile split tests (TS) or Brazilian tests to obtain it indirectly. The samples tested had the same binder quantity but five different fiber contents in order to study the influence of the fibers in the improved soil behavior. In addition, a comparison between the results of both tests was made."

Particle beneficiation tests are often conducted to determine how the recovery of a key component of a particle mixture varies with overall product yield, i.e., the separation curve. The results can be misleading when an attempt is made to determine the effect of feed grade by comparing separation curves representing different feed grades or key component concentrations. This is a shortcoming of the conventional recovery versus yield diagram, which may not appear to be affected by feed concentration. To overcome this shortcoming, a method is presented for transforming and normalizing the recovery and yield coordinates so that the separation curves representing dif-ferent feed concentrations are directly comparable.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using pure crystalline apatite to investigate potential causes for low extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4-1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4-1/2H2O morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

This paper discusses equipment replacement strategies and specifically addresses the upgrading of technologically superseded equipment. The process of equipment replacement evaluations is reviewed, and areas have been highlighted where currently accepted practice results in a bias towards retaining existing equipment longer than otherwise justified. The Discounted Average Cost Method is described and the advantages of the technique for this style of decision making discussed. Several key issues influencing the replacement evaluation are also presented together with examples from recent consulting work.

A study, part of a doctoral dissertation (Matthias, 1991), was conducted during 1987 and 1988 to establish the means by which professionals assess and maintain their competence during the various stages of their careers. The study elicited responses from fifty-nine subjects representing engineering, pharmacy and medicine (twenty subjects from engineering, nineteen from pharmacy and twenty from medicine) on their perception and assessment of continuing competence. The findings revealed a wide variation of how professionals perceived their continuing competence and the means they adopted to keep current. The implications of the study are significant for adult education practice and theory building. The author strongly believes that now, more than ever, engineers must take ownership of their careers and professional development activities. While management and supervision have a key role to play, it is the engineer, who is ultimately responsible for the scope, planning and implementation of her/ his professional development needs. An example from one high technology company will illustrate these points.

The problem of the measurement of in situ stresses in rock masses has, in recent years, become one of the prime concerns of investigators and researchers in the field of rock mechanics. Numerous instruments have been developed for that purpose and various techniques have been used to determine the absolute values of these stresses at a point.l The "stress-relief" technique has gained the widest acceptance. In its usual application it relies on one of the two following principles: (1) Measurements of the changes in a "solid inclusion" in a borehole,2 or (2) Measurements of the diametral deformation of a borehole with a free boundary." The theoretical development, in the case of the latter, is based upon an evaluation of the deformation of a circular hole in an infinite plate under the action of a uniaxial stress field. Expressions for the deformations may be obtained by using either the plain strain or the generalized plane stress theoretical approach of the classical theory of Elasticity, which assumes that the material is linearly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The solution for the case of a biaxial stress field is obtained by the Principal of Superposition. The circular hole becomes elliptical after deformation takes place under the action of a uniaxial or biaxial stress field applied to the plate. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a series of laboratory tests to investigate the effectiveness of using a flooded-bed scrubber with exhaust ventilation in deep-cut faces. An experimental test program to determine the impact on respirable dust levels resulting from changes in face airflow, curtain-setback distance, operator positioning and operating parameters of the external spray system on the miner was completed. Gravimetric sampling was conducted in the immediate return and at three sampling locations on the off-curtain side of the entry. Statistically significant differences in dust levels, on the order of 0.5 to 1.2 mg/m3, were observed between specific sampling locations and changes in several test parameters. Dust sampling results indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber and exhaust ventilation can be a viable dust-control system for extracting deep cuts up to 12.2 m (40 ft) in length. The impact on methane was not evaluated.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a novel method of flocculation dewatering of phosphatic clay wastes using polyethylene oxide as the flocculant. Research was conducted to determine whether ethylene oxide gas was present in the air in the vicinity of disposed waste materials which had been flocculated with polyethylene oxide. Samples of clay waste materials containing polyethylene oxide were prepared in stoppered glass bottles in simulated disposal environments. Gaseous samples, removed over a 75-day period using an airtight syringe, were injected into a gas chromatograph that was capable of separating ethylene oxide from air. The presence of ethylene oxide gas was not detected in any sample. To determine possible degradation products of polyethylene oxide, the properties and reactions of ethylene oxide and its polymers were reviewed. Based upon the literature survey and experimental study, it was concluded that adverse environmental effects were not likely to result from the use of polyethylene oxide for flocculating phosphatic clay waste products.

People in the real estate industry are fond of saying that the three most important features of a piece of property are, in order, location, location, and location. This is perhaps the reason that the owners of a well known high-end restaurant chain chose to spend $15 million dollars to renovate 5000 square feet of basement in a 22-story commercial building in the heart of New York City's Time Square. The goal was to create a music club with a stage area and dance floor with a mezzanine level surrounding the dance floor. In order to create the 50' x 40' dance floor and 20' x 40' stage area, 3 concrete columns were removed. New transfer girders were used to transfer the loads of these columns to new steel columns. For the mezzanine, nine columns had to be underpinned. All work continued while the restaurants, shops and offices above carried on business as usual. This paper details some of the means and methods utilized as well as the challenges faced by Underpinning & Foundation Constructors, Inc. in underpinning the columns and installing the new transfer steel.

During a recent National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health field evaluation of a newly designed filtration and pressurization system for an enclosed cab of a surface drill, it was determined that the drill operator's respirable-dust exposure was significantly increased during time periods when the cab door was opened to manually guide another section of drill steel into place to achieve additional cutting depth. Although no dust cloud was visible when the door was opened to perform this task, the drill operator's exposure was documented (over a three-day test period) to be nine times higher than when the cab door was closed. Even at this higher respirable-dust concentration, the drill operator's exposure remained well below the permissible exposure limit governed by the federal dust standard; however, an alternative method is being investigated to guide the drill steel in place in order to eliminate this increased exposure. .

This report covers the work on developing criteria for determining when a hazard exists when mining stratified mineral deposits beneath bodies of surface water. The nature of water bodies is considered, the disturbance to the strata induced by mining is described, inundation case histories reviewed, reasonable water inflows derived, and methods of mining to prevent or minimize the hazard are presented. Criteria are given whereby effected industries and agencies can recognize a potential hazard and plan a mine accordingly, releasing considerable mineral reserves otherwise considered unminable.

The quantitative indexes would give her/him the opportunity to reflect on her/his works, and enable us to gain in-depth insight into the teleoperation, and furthermore give us with promising hints to improve it.

A 25-mm diameter dense-medium cyclone was tested to investigate the effects of geometry and operating conditions on cyclone performance when processing -150 I'm coal. The emphasis was on examining those variables (e.g., flow rate and inlet velocity) which impact the separation kinetics (specifically the number of g's and the mean retention time) and the occurrence of apparent bypass. Apparent bypass, indicated by partition curve "tails", results from the short circuiting of the feed coal to one or both of the product streams and represents a loss and/or contamination of the clean coal. This paper presents the results for this series of tests.
