Today’s mining industry faces rapid transformation driven by automation, climate responsibility, and ESG demands, requiring more than technical expertise. Future mining engineers must blend engineering excellence with key human skills such as communication, leadership, resilience, empathy, adaptation to change, curiosity and lifelong learning. Based on two recent surveys, one to senior leaders with over ten years of experience in the mining industry and a second, focused on understanding the perceptions of young professionals, this paper explores which skills become core competencies by 2030 for navigating complexity, leading responsibly, and enabling sustainable transformation. Furthermore, it also examines how educational institutions can adopt strategies to foster the development of these critical skills, preparing future mining talent for evolving challenges.

The long-term production schedule of open pit mines that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a given project relies on the proper design of phases (pushbacks) within the ultimate pit limits. There is not a phase design algorithm applied in the mining industry today that gives yearly production schedules that are optimum.The majority of phase design algorithms currently in use by the mining industry aims at grouping the blocks that fall within the ultimate pit limits into phases such that the average value of the blocks within each phase decrease as the size of the phases increase. Current phase design methods are typically based on a pit limit optimisation algorithm, originally introduced by Lerchs and Grossmann (LG) in 1965. To obtain multiple pit shells to be used for the phase design, the LG pit limit algorithm successively applied to economic block models by changing the price of the commodity or some other factor that properly parameterises the size of the pit. These modified economic block models are developed by predetermining the destination for each block in the model based on a breakeven analysis and highest economic outcome between alternative destinations. Phase designs determined by these existing algorithms may be suboptimal if a given project utilises multiple processing facilities for metal recovery and particularly if these facilities have restrictions (constraints) that require blending of attributes in the feed. To overcome these problems in obtaining phases that optimise overall production schedules, a new algorithm is developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The algorithm determines the phases of an open pit mine by taking into account multiple process options for the blocks and period by period blending requirements. This algorithm has been implemented within a software program (the software) and is being prototyped successfully in the design of improved pushbacks at a copper mine in South America and on a gold mine in Nevada. This presentation will demonstrate the shortcomings of the traditional phase design methodologies based on comparison of results coming from the new approach versus the traditional.

In light of the rapid deployment of bottom blowing smelting in China over the last ten years, one has to wonder why it has taken the copper industry so long to adopt ultra-high oxygen enrichment via Savard-Lee type injectors. As early as 1976, Kellogg and Henderson suggested, in their landmark paper on energy usage in the copper industry, that ‘maximum use of oxygen enrichment of process air’ was one of seven ‘energy saving features’ for copper matte smelting and converting. Yet today, shrouded injection and high oxygen enrichment has not been implemented in copper bath smelting outside China and Vietnam. In this paper, the authors explore the reasons why bath smelting processes such as the Noranda Reactor and the Teniente Converter still operate around 40% oxygen enrichment, while the bottom blowing SKS/BBS process typically runs at 65 to 75% oxygen, with all three processes producing white metal. Are there fundamental metallurgical explanations for this striking difference beyond the long-standing skepticism towards high oxygen shrouded injection and its perceived high implementation cost?

Groundfall accidents have been the leading cause of fatalities in the underground coal mining industry for many years. Statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that approximately half of the victims of these fatal accidents were in an area where no devices had been installed to support the mine's roof. This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to summarize the opinions of 268 coal miners, 29 rust-line supervisors, and 30 MSHA inspectors concerning why people go under unsupported roof, and how to prevent this behavior. Interviews were conducted at six minesites.

Why does a continuous casting mould powder, which works successfully on a particular caster with respect to semi quality, fail to perform on a caster of a similar design utilizing liquid steel from a similar route for an identical product without some tuning of its make-up and composition? In casting sequences of the same steel grade, why do some apparent random heats produce poor surface quality with respect to cracking when otherwise good surface quality is realized? The answer to these questions lies in the interaction of the mould powder, the casting hardware, and the casting process variables. Using, as examples, data collected from within Corus UK and during collaborative work on the assessment of mould powder performance and its effects on surface quality, the interaction of the mould powder, the casting hardware and the casting process variables is explored. The steelmaking route and its associated alumina load, unexpected changes to slag chemistry, infiltration of the slag into the mould strand gap, and the nature of the slag film are all shown to affect powder performance. This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

Brownfield project portfolios are notoriously hard to manage. Day to day there is a constant stream of changes and challenges within projects and across the whole program. When the budget year is over, we?re often left wondering: did the facilities get what they really needed? Did we get value for the capital that was spent? Did we get all the project control and process improvement that we paid for? Great work has been done over the years by the Project Management Institute, Construction Industry Institute and Independent Project Analysis to identify what leads to project success, develop project delivery systems and equip project leaders to perform better. But is attention to individual projects all we need when the job is to deliver a portfolio of many projects? Let?s work with an analogy for a moment, and say a project is like a car, and a project manager the driver. Why can?t all the projects in the portfolio get home in time for dinner? The answer, of course, is that the commute home is about traffic, not just about cars. The road, the signals and the actions of other drivers affect us in our individual cars. Optimizing traffic flow is not about managing individual cars, it is about creating the conditions that allow all traffic to move as smoothly as possible. When we?re stuck in traffic, it doesn?t really matter that we are skilled drivers who know our exact location and our engine?s vital signs. Success with a brownfield portfolio requires more than the equivalent of driver training and a good GPS in every vehicle. Managing the annual budget requires more than tight management of each project. This is not a suggestion to abandon project management in the brownfield multi-projects world; the idea is to find and apply the right tools for delivering a portfolio. Remember, we want confidence in 3 areas: 1. that the facility is getting what it really needs, when it needs it 2. that we are getting value for money invested in facility modifications and improvements, and 3. that our controls are adding value by guiding our improvement What are those portfolio tools? The job they have to do is distinct from project-level thinking: ? Create a clear and balanced business pull for project ideas ? Maintain a respectable plan for fiscal, resource and business control ? Organize the work into a steady flow ? Manage the nature and timing of value-driven project substitutions and priority changes ? Focus on overall business value added and best use of resources ? Repurpose the projects organization into being the way the facility gets improved

Gold ores in the geologically more recent rocks are often associated with copper minerals which pose problems of high reagent consumption with conventional cyanidation practice. Many examples exist in northern Australia, Indonesia, Papua­New Guinea, Chile, and Brazil where, despite various treatment options (LaBrooy, 1992), the processing of oxide and transition ores is uneconomic either for copper or gold recovery. Hence, there is a need for a reagent which is selective for gold without leaching copper minerals. The ammonia-cyanide system appears to meet this criterion (Muir et al, 1989; LaBrooy et al, 1991; Costello et al, 1992; Hayes and Corrans, 1992) but it has proven difficult to optimise and apply to a variety of ores due to differences in the mineralogy and reactivity of ores and a lack of understanding of how the system works. Recent work on the mechanism, however, (Muir et al, 1993) has thrown a new light on the problem which should allow better process control. Ammonia­cyanide mixtures behave neither like free cyanide nor free ammonia and too much of either reagent in the mixture is detrimental. The key to the process is understanding how ammonia enhances gold extraction yet inhibits copper extraction in an essentially cyanide environment.

A native-born New Englander (June 23, 1881), he naturally went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received the Bachelor's degree in mining in 1904. Just why a Fitchburg. Massachusetts boy yearned to he a mining engineer he has never explained, but why should any boy ever have to explain why lie wants t? be a mining engineer? The paper describes challenges the author has encountered on Australian underground gold and nickel mines over the last eight years, when recovering high-grade gold/nickel bearing mine floor material with a mobile supersucker/giant vacuum cleaner and other equipment. Whilst for a number of years the mine floor vacuuming and other mine floor clean-down technologies have been accepted/adopted and are working well in other parts of the world and on the South Australian opal mines, regrettably, they have not yet gained acceptance of mining executives and mine managers of gold and metal mines in Australia, who still elect to leave the never to be recovered gold/metal behind or to put it plainly - waste it.For reporting purposes during the mining process, the portion of gold/metal included in calculation of ore reserves prior to obtaining capital funds for their development, continues to be camouflaged in various reconciliation and call factors. This approach, ie wasting of capitally developed and already broken ore stocks should be viewed by the shareholders as totally inappropriate to say the least, especially with the current gold and other metals prices.The author attempts to provide answers as to why the technology referred to above has not yet been accepted on Australian gold and metal mines and outlines the way forward.CITATION:Biegaj, K, 2012. China, India and South Korea are three developing/newly industrialized countries that can show a very positive economic development in latter years. Moreover the three countries also feature amongst the countries with the highest level of activity in deep seabed mining today. India was the first country to achieve Pioneer Investor status in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The country has carried out comprehensive exploitation of nodule deposits in the Central Indian Basin. India has an active programme for development of mining technology and internationally, India is probably the leading nation today as far as processing technology is concerned. China for its part has established a central coordination unit for its deep seabed involvement and its exploration and technology development is already well underway. South Korea has applied for Pioneer Investor status and much indicates that it will be allocated its own minesite in the autumn of 1994. The three countries are in mutual contact in the area of the Law of the Sea. Korea contacted both China and India when drawing up its application for pioneer investor status and allocation of minesite. However, no cooperation exists between the three regarding for example technology development, economic analysis or in studies of the environmental consequences. The main purpose of this paper is to focus on why and how the three countries would be well advised to cooperate in the above areas. Economic, technological and organizational aspects all point in that direction.

The selection of samples for metallurgical test work is generally focused on providing geologically representative samples. One of the major problems experienced with metallurgical test work using drill hole data, is the small sample sets selected for metallurgical testing. Major process and financial decisions are being made from results obtained using snapshot samples. Snapshot samples means that samples are basically selected only by grade and spatial location with the assumption that the rest of the orebody or portion of orebody is similar and will respond metallurgically the same way – ie the assumption is that the mineralogy and lithology are basically the same as the test sample. From the test work, algorithms were usually developed and used to describe throughput and recovery using some explanatory variables including grade (mineral chemistry) and ore hardness. These algorithms were then used in the recovery models to determine tonnes produced and plant throughput. However, the metallurgical parameters are a function of many geological factors including grade, lithology, alteration, mineralogy, spatial relationships and SG. In previous years, the limited mineralogical information available was deemed enough for the metallurgist to make decisions as to how many samples are needed to evaluate the metallurgical performance of the ore during processing, and subsequently the basis for the plant design. If the orebody is consistent and not complex or refractory (thus, relative simple lithology), then only spatial and grade samples will be needed to evaluate the throughput and recovery, so limited mineralogical information may be acceptable. There is now, however, an increasing realisation that the mineralogy and geology change, as do the metallurgical characteristics of the orebody, so limited samples may not be sufficient for effective metallurgical test work.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect correct mineralogical information has on the subsequent metallurgical test work program and process selection using a case study. Factors such as type of rock, rainfall and topography are thought to influence the minerals that ultimately form in various orebodies, with the result that different orebodies often react differently during metallurgical test work programs. It is therefore important to obtain accurate mineralogical and elemental deportment data, which will also indicate where the valuable metal containing minerals are located within the orebody. The better you plan and execute your metallurgical test work program during the early phases, the more accurate the decision-making process will be during the selection phase. Improved integration between geology and metallurgy data gathering (geometallurgy) during early phases will result in more accurate predictions with regard to throughput and recovery during modelling and process. Equipment selection will be considerably simpler in later phases with early planning, with improved mine and process scheduling and subsequent net present value (NPV).

The mining industry’s attention has shifted over the last decade with the recovery from the downturn resulting in greater development of innovation and new work methods in a bid to remain competitive and deliver higher productivity. The emphasis on cost reduction to improve profit margins has primarily been the focus of the “work smarter” campaigns embraced within the industry. But is this strategy holistically the best-for-business, or does it place a ceiling on revenue opportunities and inhibit mining companies from truly maximising value? Businesses need to maintain a balance between active cost management and revenue generation often resulting in cost reduction strategies at site level. These strategies have merit, assessing areas of cost wastage across operations and creating space for opportunity. However, this potentially can create distractions from the goal of enabling growth and lead to the sacrifice of quality and delivery. Focusing too heavily on cost reductions without addressing revenue generation is an unprofitable lens to look through, and the relationships between cost, revenue, quality and profit margin can often be overlooked resulting in missed opportunity to maximise value. How these relationships are effectively employed by mining companies to reap the rewards from an overarching corporate perspective down to site level remains a fluid concept depending on the nature, operating market and strategy of the business. A common directive from businesses to their operations is to strive for greater profitability and productivity. The quantification of these requirements, and the nature of the cascading message delivered, impacts the methods employed by the operational team to meet the expectations of the business. Cascaded strategies, if not delivered with appropriate participation and buy-in can often be perceived to be knee-jerk and create frustration for operations who are squeezed to deliver on expectations by slashing site costs. This squeezing is not only felt by the mining operation but at the individual level and can result in increased team stresses. In some cases, this may also steer behaviours towards activities that result in corner cutting and an elevation of operational risk, potentially increasing associated incidents and injury. Driving down costs by any means can create an unhealthy tunnel vision where value is no-longer assessed for best-forbusiness results. By flipping the viewpoint to a value-based approach revenue opportunity may be realised and potentially exceeded, however this opportunity may be missed if value is over shadowed by a cost heavy focus. By analysing a selection of real operational cases (ranging from mining contractors through to in-house mining giants), it becomes apparent that practical revenue maximisation strategies are not only key to an increase in value and cash flow but to a stronger understanding of business drivers for sites and operators alike. In the cases evaluated additional revenue opportunities are foregone in favour of cost reduction strategies resulting in negative impacts on the associated operations and wider businesses. Alignment towards value generation is king. If strategies are not implemented focusing towards value and revenue maximisation, the opportunity loss experienced by mining operations could continue be great and the question should be posed; when the next up-turn hits will operations be ready to reap the rewards or still have a glass ceiling above their heads?

Mining epitomises the challenge of sustainable development, because few sectors have such a direct impact on the natural environment, yet few are more important to the economic and social health of almost every region in the globe. In a global industry, with increasing competition for exploration and mining investment dollars, sustainable development must also be resolved within an international competitiveness framework. In formulating a response to the challenge of sustainable development, the State and Federal Governments do not fully appreciate the extent to which technology drives the solution on a range of issues. In some cases` a dangerous fatalism about the state of science has led to an unhealthy æstop productionÆ attitude that puts our industry and economy at risk. As a technical institute representing the professionals in the minerals sector, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) sees one of its roles as being to highlight the way in which industry innovation can facilitate solutions. The AusIMM is currently evolving a greenhouse gas emissions policy. As a case study it throws into sharp relief the way in which irresponsible ælimits to growthÆ policies could have a negative impact on the sustainability of the sector, as well as the importance of a technology- based solution. With 80 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in the next twenty years projected to come from developing economies, such as India and China, major reductions will only be achieved if cost-effective, low emissions energy technologies are deployed in developing countries, and more energy efficient processes of producing key commodities for them are brought online. As a supplier of the key energy resources and materials that will be in high demand to feed developing economies, and with knowledge intensive industries with excellent R&D links across mining and manufacturing, Australia is well positioned to contribute to develop key low emissions technologies. However, we will only be able to take advantage of this position if the Federal Government commits to a holistic greenhouse emissions policy that does not penalise industry. We need effective æpushÆ polices aimed at leveraging investment in low emissions R&D that are closely linked in to æpullÆ policies aimed at stimulating technology uptake.

The objectives of this paper are two-fold. First, it will show what problems can arise when single estimated values are substituted for a distribution of values when evaluating an open pit mine project in the face of uncertainty. Secondly, it will show how the ability to deal with uncertainty and risk in mine project evaluation can have a significant impact on the ownersÆ and stakeholdersÆ investment decision-making. Here a new mine evaluation framework, the integrated valuation/ optimisation framework (named IVOF), is introduced as an alternative tool for mine project evaluation where uncertainty and risk are incorporated in the evaluation process.

Confronted with this prevailing attitude, Canada's mining industry starts out with two strikes against it in its bid to attract and hold on to its fair share of available work force.Behavioural scientists have, for decades, been seeking answers to the questions:• ""Why do people work?""• ""Why do people choose a particular occupation?""• ""Why do people choose a particular organization?""• ""Why do people leave one organization for another?""• ""Why do some people stay in an organization?""• ""Why do some people work harder than others?""Their answers to these questions, although tentative and often contradictory, are being used by more and more organizations to solve people problems. Few industries can afford to ignore them, least of all, perhaps, the mining industry.Consider the following developments:I. General Motors and the United Auto Workers turn around the car assembly plant in Tarrytown, New York in seven years from the plant with the poorest labour relations and production record to one of the best under a program referred to as ""improving the quality of work life.""2. "There’s a bit of confusion and misinformation in the tunneling and underground construction industry regarding contractor joint ventures. If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. Other benefits of the JV arrangement include: • Oportunities to gain new expertise and capacity.• The ability for firms to move into new geographic markets.• JV agreements are not long-term commitments.• Sharing of financial support for a project.• Sharing of financial risks within a project. between the partners.• Can complicate dispute resolutions with the owner and between partners"

When is it the proper time to initiate engagement with various stakeholders, including Indigenous communities? This paper will demonstrate what stage of a project’s evolution is the appropriate time to initiate a stakeholder engagement plan. It will look at aspects to consider when identifying the communities to involve. It will describe the contents of a Stakeholder Engagement Management Plan as well and touch on how tried and true options analyses, such as a Multiple Accounts Analysis can be used to inform the results of the engagement, guide the development of your project and clearly document the engagement process. It will illustrate the benefits of initiating engagement at the appropriate point in your project’s schedule, and the limitations of doing so too early and at later stages of the project engineering. The benefits of this approach can be realized within any legislative Jurisdiction including the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act 2012 and Canada’s new Impact Assessment Act.

The Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (40%) and higher Cl contents (3,000-10,000 mg/kg). Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.
