This paper presents a case history of a mature and well-established quarry company that has attempted to keep pace with an ever-changing economy. It examines the impact of socio- economic and technological factors on the company's marketing efforts, and looks at the role of both short and long range planning. The realities which have had to be faced and how product requirements have been kept in balance with production restrictions are also discussed.

A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on the pressure oxidation (POx) pretreatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pretreatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperatures. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a computer program called the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE). The purpose of the program is to provide a starting point for estimating the air quantity needed to dilute diesel particulate matter (DPM) in an underground large opening mine, albeit taking into account various input assumptions. The AQE estimates the total air quantity needed to dilute DPM emissions that enter the main airstream of the mine to current statutory levels. It helps operators pinpoint vehicles that are high DPM contributors. In addition, it allows the user to make “what if” scenarios by varying the input parameters to achieve the most efficient and practical ventilation system. The AQE is a stand-alone software program that does not require any type of spreadsheet software. Engine data must be known or estimated with some accuracy and assumptions must be made in order to limit the variability of the program output. Program calculations and two case studies, for validation purposes, are included in this report. It should be noted that the program does not ensure adequate face ventilation and personal exposure compliance.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the properties of zinc alloys containing 25 to 40 wt pet Al and 0 to 0.7 pet Mg. Microstructures, hardness, and tensile properties were evaluated for material as extruded at 285° C, solution treated at 300° to 400° C, and subsequently aged at 100° to 200° C. The alloys without magnesium are characterized by low hardness and strength with high tensile elongation and reduction in area. It was verified that magnesium effectively retards the Zn-Al eutectoid transformation below 275° C and markedly increases hardness and strength with decreases in ductility. Solution treating at 350° C results in large grain sizes and gross embrittlement. Subsequent aging of the Zn-Al-Mg alloys at 200° C restores ductility substantially and stabilizes the structures, but strengths are considerably reduced. Combined strength and ductility properties are better for the as-extruded condition than for any heat-treated condition. There is usually little advantage in overall tensile properties from increasing magnesium above 0.1 pct.

The mechanical behaviour of Opalinus Clay, an indurated over-consolidated argillaceous rock, is heavily influenced by the presence of preferably oriented bedding planes. The objective of this study is to illustrate a new modeling approach aimed at capturing the bedding-induced anisotropy of Opalinus Clay as observed in the laboratory and in situ. The combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM) is employed as the main simulation tool. FEM/DEM is a numerical method that models material damage processes by explicitly considering fracture nucleation and propagation. A transversely isotropic elastic constitutive law is used to account for different elastic property values in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the layering, while strength anisotropy is captured using a directional cohesive fracture model. Quantitative calibration and validation of the model is based on laboratory results of indirect tensile tests and uniaxial compression tests. Emergent strength and deformation properties, together with the simulated damage mechanisms, are shown to be in good agreement with experimental observations. Preliminary results relative to the analysis of a circular tunnel show that the approach is able to reproduce the main Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ) formation mechanisms as observed in the field.

The present paper presents the study of light green smectite clay, from Paraiba, Brazil, submitted to mild acid attack under moderated conditions. Usually, clays are subjected to treatment with strong inorganic acids at temperatures near the boiling point and at high acid concentrations and then, widely used as bleaching agents. The treatment occurred under bellow boiling temperature and at short times of reaction (90°C, reaction times of 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours in close reactor, concentration of the aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid 1.5 M, clay/acid solution ratio of 1g/10mL). The purpose of these attacks is to reduce the concentration of impurities providing color, with minimal change in the clay minerals structure, aiming at use in products of high value such as cosmetics and polymer/clay nanocomposites. The raw clay and the attacked samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDS).

Safety of mine ramps begins with an analysis of stress that almost certainly must be done numerically to take into account ramp geometry, route geology, rock properties, and pre-ramp stresses. The popular finite element method serves analysis purposes quite well. As a practical matter several obstacles to implementation need to be addressed including collection of rock and joint properties along the proposed ramp route, selection of ramp type, and specification of cross-section shape, size, and route grade. Additionally, stresses along the proposed route must be specified, preferably from in situ measurements. One need not be an expert in numerical methods to proceed to ramp design, although a background in mechanics of materials and rock mechanics is essential, and a first course in numerical methods is quite helpful. The necessary software is easily brought to the design task, more accurately, to the task of design evaluation. This software also addresses other important mine design problems including design of safe (1) main entries in stratified ground, (2) barrier pillars, (3) bleeder entries, (4) inter-panel barrier pillars, (5) room and pillar mines, (6) shafts, and (7) “tunnels” (Pariseau 2022).

In uranium metallurgy, the main purpose is to obtain a product containing 80-85% U308 (yellowcake) from ores whose average grade is a mere 0.21% U30& Essentially, the task of extraction and concentration involves dissolving the ore's U308 values, followed by purification and concentration of the uranium-rich solution (using such operations as filtration, clarification, and ion-exchange), and then selectively precipitating and isolating U308. Leaching is First Step In yellowcake production mills, the first chemical change occurs by leaching the ore with either sulfuric acid-as done by Anaconda and Kerr-McGee-or with an alkaline solution of, say, sodium carbonate, as done by United Nuclear-Homestake Partners. The choice of either acid or alkaline leaching is not an arbitrary one: it depends on the chemical and physical characteristics of a particular ore. That is, on the presence of clays, organic compounds (usually of carbonaceous origin), and soluble impurities, as well as on the ore's wetness and grindability.

"Pre-concentration in minerals processing presents clear advantages in energy efficiency, water efficiency, reduction of consumables and minimization of capital and operating costs. Outotec’s sorting solutions are powered by Tomra Sorting in order to achieve pre-concentration of concentrator feed in a variety of mineral processing applications. Sensor based sorting combines advanced sensors with rapid computational evaluation and mechanical separation of valuable material from waste and/or gangue. Modern sensor based sorting machines typically use fine air jets to propel individual rocks, thus optimizing recovery and minimizing “mis-sorting”.Gold is generally present in such low concentrations that sensors suitable for ore sorting cannot directly detect it. Therefore, in order to sort gold ore, properties of associated host rock are used. Free and sulphidic gold is often hosted on the quartz-host rock contact zone. Laser scattering effect can be used to detect the surfaces of quartz and composite quartz-host rock particles for subsequent sorting with very high recovery of 95 to 99%. In addition, ore often preferentially fractures along the quartz-host rock contact zone in the crushing circuit. This behavior helps because it liberates more quartz for detection.The feasibility of sorting is investigated for four gold projects in Northern Europe with similar mineralogy. This includes geometallurgical evaluation, amenability testing, small scale “mini-bulk” factory testing in full scale sensor based sorting. The results of the various tests are presented and basic feasibility demonstrated with information on flow sheet development. In addition, the amenability process is evaluated and recommendations made for future projects."

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operator in other districts a detailed description of ho mining method used ins results obtained in tie exploitation of the bedded magnetite deposits of the Mineville district. In the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, Brazil, hard and soft high-grade hematite ore may occur as schistose bodies in shear zones mainly related to the Cambotas-Fundpo thrust system. These orebodies are almost entirely constituted of oriented specularite platelets that develop both as a product of crystal-plastic deformation of hematite and solution-precipitation processes. Both mechanisms interact in the partitioning of the strain, while solution-precipitation is responsible for the precipitation of hematite and localised leaching of silica resulting in the formation of syntectonic ores. The analyses of fluid inclusions from specularite crystals of the Conceitpo and Timbopeba deposits, located in the northern and southernmost areas of the eastern high-strain domain of the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, were studied using infrared microthermometry and Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence. The results indicate the participation of highly saline aqueous H2O-NaCl fluids containing other additional cations (Ca, Fe, K and probably Ti) in solution and homogenisation Temperature (Th) averaging between 130¦ - 190¦C. However, the partial fusion of metastable saturation phases indicates crystallisation temperatures of approximately 400¦C. The mineralisation process produces high-grade orebodies as well as Fe-rich specularitic itabirites that are explored in that area. The shear zones are related to thrust faults mapped and interpreted as related to the PanAfrican/Brasiliano Orogeny that affected the Quadrilßtero Ferrffero, thrusting the Paleoproterozoic platform sequence of the Minas Supergroup over Mesoproterozoic quartzites of the Espinhato Supergroup. They intersect and even overprint an early metamorphic and tectonic fabric of Paleoproterozoic age (Transamazonian Orogeny). The geological and fabric relationships lead to the conclusion that the fluids involved in the mineralisation were most probably of external origin, of still unknown source (possibly igneous), during the closure of the Spo Francisco Craton.

"Manganese ore from Metals Reserve stock piles at Deming, N. Mex., Cushman, Ark., and Philipsburg, Mont., were processed in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., to determine their suitability for the production of electrolytic manganese. Manganese was produced successfully from all of the ores.The ores, crushed and ground to minus 33-mesh, were roasted in a Skinner furnace to reduce the manganese and were then leached with spent electrolyte, from the cells, containing sulfuric acid. Acid-leach extractions of 96 percent on Deming, 89 percent on Cushman, and 97.5 percent on Philipsburg ores were obtained. Neutralization of leaches with ammonia results in the highest manganese extraction; but Cushman and Deming leaches could not be neutralized with ammonia, because the amount required was more than enough to maintain the proper ammonium sulfate concentration. A combination of ammonia and calcine was used. However, ammonia was satisfactory for neutralization of Philipsburg leaches. Sulfuric acid needed for make-up was as follows: Deming, 0.380 pound per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia and calcine; Cashman, 0.402 pound per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia and calcine; Philipsburg, 0.594 round per pound of manganese extracted when neutralized with ammonia alone.All of the leach slurries settled well enough to be separated and washed in countercurrent thickeners.Impurities were precipitated with hydrogen sulfide and removed by filtration. Cushman ore solution contained only- small amounts of impurities and required 0.055 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter of solution for purification. Deming and Philipsburg solutions contained large amounts of zinc and required 0.55 and 0.65 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter of solution, respectively.Electrodeposition was satisfactory on all three ores and current efficiencies of 62 to 66 were obtained.A process for the production of electrolytic manganese has been developed by the Bureau of Mines, first on a laboratory scale4/ and then on a semicommercial pilot-plant scale.5/ At first the- pilot plant operated on ore from the Three Kids mine near Las Vegas, Nev., to determine the practical features of the process on ore of this type. Since completing the work on this ore, the pilot plant has been used for processing other domestic ores to obtain engineering data and other economic information regarding the amenability of such ores to the process."

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mime in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. In the present study, the energy release rate (ERR) index was used to evaluate three underhand stope backfill parameters--cement content, density, and placement gap-to determine their influence on rock bursts. This index provides a relative measure of the likelihood of rock bursting for a given rock mass. It is known that the elastic idealization of the rock mass inherent in this method causes underestimation of stope closure and hence underestimation of the influence of backfill on rock bursting. However, this evaluation still showed that (1) changing from present practice to one in which backfill was omitted altogether would increase the ERR by 42 pct and (2) perfect placement of backfill would reduce the ERR below present practice levels by 28 pct. The easiest step toward perfect placement would be elimination of the placement gap, which accounted for half of the difference in ERR between present practice and ideal placement conditions. There was no indication that increasing initial fill strength through increased cement content would affect the ERR.

There are a number of methods that can be adopted for predicting the ultimate lateral resistance of a free-head rigid pile, from the conventional Brinch Hansen and Broms solutions to three-dimensional finite element analyses. Often these methods give rise to significantly different pile ultimate lateral capacities which could lead to either unsafe or too conservative designs. It is also well known that finding a rigorous and practical solution is challenging due to the complex three dimensional and nonlinear soil-structure interaction. This paper reviews some of the most common methods and produces results of pile ultimate lateral capacities embedded in cohesive or cohesionless soils. Subsequently, a finite element analysis is performed using PLAXIS 3D modelling under the same design conditions. Based on comparison of results, limitations and advantages are highlighted, and the most suitable method is proposed from a practical point of view.

"The distinction between data suitable for process control and data subject to aliasing only becomes quantifiable with the availability of rapid real-time measurements. Expecting the dynamics of flotation to vary for different ore types, process flows and equipment types; a study was conducted to compare the dynamics of different flotation processes. The results shed light on the critical sampling intervals required for process control which in turn allows process stabilization and optimization. The technology used for the in-line measurements is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy and has been introduced into the mineral processing industry over the past ten years. It has been widely implemented in the sulphide flotation industry in South Africa for the real-time measurement of grade.BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE A study was conducted by Du Plessis and Keet (2010) to quantify the minimum sample frequency required for grade and/or impurity control. The study was based on chromite data collected at 15 second intervals from the concentrate line of a flash float cell in the Platinum industry. The data captured the natural process variation of the entrained chromite through water recovery due to changes in feed parameters and flotation performance. It was found that the minimum rate of sampling required from the studied flash float concentrate was 2 minutes. This sampling interval time accounted for 90% of the variance in the process data. It was further found that a sampling interval time of longer than 4 minutes produced data with no significant correlation to reality. The dynamics of the flotation process has been misjudged in the past but can be quantified with the availability of real-time grade measurement based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy. The objective of the study was to compare the dynamics of different sulphide flotation processes through the comparison of maximum sampling interval times required to combat aliasing. All data were collected from single stream analyzers that are currently installed at mineral concentrators. The technology used is based on diffuse reflective spectroscopy."

This paper presents a case history of liquefaction susceptibility evaluation study for a major infrastructure project in the San José area. The subsurface material of the study area consists of Holocene alluvial deposits composed of interbedded and crosscut clays and silts, sands and gravels. The simplified approach for liquefaction triggering evaluation was carried out using both CPT data and SPT data representing site’s seismic capacity and the peak ground acceleration associated with a return period of 975 years at ground surface representing seismic demands. Site-specific cyclic stress ratio (CSR) profiles as seismic demand are also estimated from one-dimensional site response analysis. The simplified approach uses empirical depth stress reduction factors (rd) based on generic shear wave velocity profiles to account for the non-rigid response of the soil profile in estimating CSR. The CSR profiles of the simplified procedure were examined by completing site response analyses using site-specific soil profiles to represent site-specific seismic demands in the liquefaction triggering evaluation. The paper concludes with a comparison and discussion of the liquefaction evaluation examining results from CPT versus SPT data, and the comparison of CSR profiles from the simplified procedure versus site-specific response analysis.

The concept of "profit" is implicit in the definition of an ore reserve. It is suggested that the flexible concept "economic" is more appropriate. This allows different economic considerations to be taken to account when determining what is ore at the feasibility study stage; during actual mining production; before mine closure; and from the viewpoint of the national economy. Economic factors which are highly variable, and largely beyond a mining enterprise's control, affect the economic exploitation of a mineral resource. Major economic factors include: metal prices; operating costs; the cost of original and replacement capital equipment; the cost of capital; taxation and royalties; inflation; exchange rates and the state of the world economy. The paper suggests why a careful quantification of the average value, trend, and variation from the trend of major economic factors should be made and how this will lead to a better definition of ore reserves. The paper also discusses the necessity of reappraising economic factors during the life of a mine in order to maximise the economic surplus and to minimise the wastage of natural, economic and human resources employed in mining.
