Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. It has' been found that lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh Coal bed cause the subsidence coefficient to vary within the area of the subsidence trough. This precludes the use of European developed predictive models, which are based upon a constant subsidence coefficient. Regression analysis of the distribution of subsidence coefficients from 11 Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, longwall panel studies on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation. This equation has been incorporated into a BASIC computer program for use on a personal computer that allows users with no previous knowledge of the theory of subsidence to predict vertical movements over typical longwall panels in the Northern Appa1achian Coal Basin.

Wilkes-Barre Meeting, Julie, runs., THE ore-hearth was the earliest type of furnace used in smelting Mississippi Valley lead-ores, which are very pure, and low in silver-content. The first smelters made no attempts to recover lead from the smoke; and since about 15 per cent. of the lead -in the charge escaped in this manner, early practice with the hearth was decidedly wasteful. At most of the large smelting-plants blast-furnaces with auxiliary roasters were substituted for the hearths long ago. But, upon the introduction of the Lewis and Bartlett bag-process for collecting fume, the ore-hearth was used by companies engaged in the manufacture -of pigments, simply on account of the large percentage of fume made by it. In fact, the extraction of lead was kept down by the use of hot blast and other devices. During recent years, however, several smelting companies have realized that the preliminary roasting of galena for the blast-furnace is not economical, and have, therefore, replaced the roasting-furnace with a modification. of the old Scotch hearth, in which a large percentage of the lead in a charge is recovered directly as pig-lead, while the remainder passes partly into fume and partly into slag low enough in sulphur to be charged into the blast-furnace without further treatment. The results obtained have proved so satisfactory, both As to recovery and operating-expense, that one eminent metallurgist has predicted the universal use of the ore-hearth on non-argentiferous ores. The-ore-hearth, thus employed as an adjunct to a blast-furnace plant, is rather a desulphurizer than a smelting-furnace proper,-the chief object being to make a blue slag suitable for the cupola-furnace. This paper presents a dynamic analyses of heap leach pad stability under high phreatic levels and various levels of seismic loading. The dynamic analysis were conducted as fully non-linear two dimensional analyses with fully coupled liquefaction triggering using the Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) computer code. Also, the geotechnical parameters, appropriate earthquake record selection and modification, model calibration, numerical analyses and results are discussed.

Despite an increasing focus by media, communities and activists driving an elevated regulatory focus in Australia and indeed some other mining jurisdictions, the mining industry globally has had limited successful mine lease relinquishments and transfers to support a next land use.Critique from anti-mining lobbyists frequently uses the large estimates from historically abandoned mine sites to influence risk-averse regulatory reforms to improve environmental performance. The mine rehabilitation regulatory processes in Australia, and specifically in the State of Queensland, are thus largely in place to prevent mining operators from abandoning their obligations.Regulatory responses to the lack of mine rehabilitation and closure performance in the last five to ten years have primarily focussed on compliance and enforcement of rehabilitation conditions in environmental approvals. Additionally, financial assurance measures have been tightened to protect against abandonment of rehabilitation obligations by the Industry, including the Chain of Responsibility legislation (Queensland Government, 2016b) in April 2016, to hold to account those who have benefitted from mining and processing/refining projects, and then avoid their environmental obligations.CITATION:Swart, P B and Erskine, P D, 2018. THE first commercial production of bituminous coal in the United States was in 1820, and formation of acid in the areas from which the coal was removed began at that time. Thus it is 130 years since the development of mine acid began. The coal operator has had to deal with the acid water produced in his mines, and his losses from corrosion of pumps and equipment have been tremendous. Other industries and the public have been forced to spend large amounts for their water requirements because of the acid discharge from the mines. There are many contradictions in the literature on this subject probably because of variations in the analytical procedures followed and differences in the methods of calculation and reporting. The opinions previously expressed may be summarized as follows: The production of mine acid has been looked upon as a simple chemical reaction wherein the oxygen of the air has reacted with pyrite to produce ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid. This reaction appears in many chemistry texts and generally has not been considered worthy of further study. Since the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration or activity was developed and expressed in terms of pH, indicator and instrumental methods for pH determination have become readily available, making it natural to think of it as a measure of acid content. Special purpose analytical methods applicable to potable waters, sewage effluents, and boiler waters, based in general upon the determination of what may be regarded as impurities, have been applied to more concentrated solutions constituting mine discharges, without reference to the fact that these specialized procedures had been developed to serve as operating guides for water-treatment plants. Increased flow was thought to result in a dilution of the acid produced. When the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a fellowship at Mellon Institute, the first approach to the problem was to review some of the chemical reactions involved and their relation to acid production. Since the sulphates of iron were among the principal constituents of coal-mine drainage, the first studies were based upon solutions of chemically pure ferrous and ferric sulphate. These are both neutral salts, that is, the iron and the sulphate are equivalent, but they produce acid reactions in water solution because as salts of strong acids with weak bases, they hydrolyze to form acid solutions. INTRODUCTION The Chimney Creek Gold Mine (Gold Fields Operating Co. - Chimney Creek) is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. The operation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields Mining Corporation, the North American branch of Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, London, England. The plant started up in November, 1987, less than three years after discovery of the orebody and three months ahead of schedule. Ore is mined in an open pit and is processed by combined dump leaching and milling techniques for gold and silver recovery. The mine is set to produce approximately 150.000 ounces of gold and 50,000 ounces of silver per year over a 12 year life at current reserve estimations. The mine was designed and constructed at a cost of $79.3 million with engineering and construction services provided by Davy McKee Corporation, San Ramon, California. Key Gold Fields operating staff were involved in the design of the facility from the start of the project: The Mine Manager, Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist were all involved full time on the project within 5 months of the first ore discovery. Emphasis was directed at optimizing operating efficiency and in particular minimizing labor costs in the plant. It was recognized that a high level of instrumentation and control would be required to achieve this. The risk associated with the instrumentation and control systems implemented was to be minimized by using equipment and systems that had been proven in industry while utilizing the most cost effective, state-of-the-art technology available. The reliability of the overall control system was considered to be critical in view of the cost of downtime associated with the gold extraction plant. BRIEF PROCESS DESCRIPTION The dump leaching process treats approximately 1.2 million tons per year of low grade ore at an average grade of 0.035 oz/ton. Run of mine material is dumped on a lined leach pad and weak cyanide solution is applied by drip irrigation. Pregnant solution run off is pumped to carbon columns in the milling plant for gold recovery and the barren solution returned to the dump leach circuit. Average gold recovery is 60%. This process has little instrumentation and control associated with it. The milling operation treats 700,000 tons annually of higher grade ore (0.200 oz/ton initially, dropping to an average of 0.135 oz/ton after first two years). Recovery is directly related to head grade (fixed tail assay effect) and currently averages 96%. A single pass through a jaw crusher reduces run of mine ore to minus 12 inches. The ore is stockpiled and reclaimed by loader for grinding in a two-stage milling circuit consisting of a SAG mill and ball mill, the latter in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyanide and lime are added into the SAG mill to start dissolution of gold as early as possible in the circuit. The ground product leaves the milling circuit at approximately 78% minus 200 mesh and is fed to an unique "double thickener" leaching-recovery circuit. This circuit has been discussed in detail in a paper by J. G. Mansanti et a1 (1). Two thickeners are arranged in counter- current configuration with three leach tanks. Overflow solution from the first thickener is treated by carbon-in-columns (CIC) for gold recovery with 85% of the soluble gold recovered onto this carbon. Underflow slurry from this thickener is pumped to the leach tanks, with a total retention time of 12 hours, and then gravitates to the No. 2 thickener. Overflow solution from the second thickener is used as a wash in the first thickener. Underflow slurry from the second thickener is treated in a carbon-in- pulp (CIP) scavenging circuit to recover the remaining 15% dissolved gold. Gold-loaded carbon from both the dump leach and milling circuits is stripped in batches using the Zadra hot caustic- cyanide elution process. Gold (and silver) is recovered from the hot strip solution by precipitation with zinc dust and the product recovered on Funda pressure filters. The precipitate is retorted to remove any mercury and then smelted into buttons. The buttons (approximately 80% gold, 15% silver) are shipped to an independent refiner in Salt Lake City, Utah, for further treatment.

Haul trucks have the potential to generate large amounts of respirable dust. This respirable dust has been shown to be a health hazard to personnel, especially if it has a high silica content. Lack of dust sampling data from haul trucks prompted the completion of a study to quantify respirable dust concentrations. These field studies were conducted measuring instantaneous respirable dust at stationary locations from passing haul trucks at a stone quarry and at a coal mine site. Fugitive dust levels from haul trucks were analyzed to characterize dust dispersion. This analysis indicates safe following distances for haul trucks and other heavy equipment to avoid overexposure of respirable dust from the lead haul truck.

Mr. Schorr says : " Brown coal and peat are briquetted as a rule without binder," but this statement is entirely true only so far as raw peat is concerned, and it is but partly true of brown coal. With regard to raw peat, briquetting without bond is carried on successfully both in Europe and America, and the development of the industry in Canada is fully described in the Bureau of Mines report for 1903, mentioned above. While there is still room for improvement in the efficiency of some of the arrangements for drying the peat previous to briquetting, a very satisfactory fuel is made at a price which enables it to compete with coal. During the late strike in the anthracite regions of Pennsylvania, the manufacture of peat: briquettes received a considerable impetus, and possibly the attention directed to it on this account may result in a. considerable increase in the output. This bulletin covers all mines in the United States that were operated in 1936 to produce metallic ores and all mines that were operated to produce nonmetallic minerals other than coal, stone, sand, gravel, or their products. Reports from mine operators revealed a better safety record for fatal accidents in 1936 than in any other year except 1934 during the 26 years for which annual surveys of accidents in the mineral industries of the United States have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines. On the other hand, the record for nonfatal injuries, although better in 1936 than in any year prior to 1930, was not as good as it was from 1930 to 1935, inclusive.

"The problem of recovering potash from the mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H2O), occurring in large quantities in the salt beds of Texas and New Mexico, has been under investigation at the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines continuously since 1928. Most of the results previously obtained have been published in technical journals and in a series of Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.The experiments described in the present report were performed to ascertain whether a continuous countercurrent extraction of calcined polyhalite by hot water would yield satisfactory recoveries and concentrations of sium sulphate in the top liquor. Previous investigation by Storch 4 had shown that the rate of solution of uncalcined polyhalite was too slow to be of value in an industrial process, and Storch and Clarke 5 had demonstrated that calcination of the polyhalite greatly, accelerated the rate of solution in hot water, allowing most of the potassium sulphate to be readily extracted."

In order to devise a practicable soaking pit schedule for use at The Steel Co. of Canada Ltd.'s Hamilton Works, soaking pit heating temperatures, sooking times, pit capacity, and safe maximum mill drafts were correlated with fluctuations in the current or load of the bloom mill driving motor. Other variables such as total delays in the pit, rolling schedules, mill delays, and track times were also investigated. IN order to show an easily applied and accurate means of establishing soaking pit heating temperatures, soaking times, pit capacity, and safe maximum mill drafts, these various factors are correlated herein with fluctuations in the current or load of the bloom mill driving motor. Rolling practices have a considerable influence on the production capacity of a blooming mill. The maximum values of the torque, in particular, are of importance, since even instantaneous current peaks lead to the tripping of the motor by the overload relay and result in loss of mill time. The establishment of safe maximum drafts and accelerations for ingots of different sizes and of a soaking pit practice which would ensure a consistent and satisfactory plasticity of the metal is of considerable importance for increasing the efficiency of both the blooming mill and the soaking pits. The Bloom Mill Dept. of the Hamilton Works, The Steel Co. of Canada Ltd., is equipped with one 44 in. mill driven by a 7000 hp motor with the setting of the overload relay at 22.0 ka. The speed of rotation of the motor is regulated after the Ward-Leonard system. There are three basic speeds of 9.5, 28, and 47 rpm and a further possibility of increasing the speed by weakening the field. This last possibility is hardly ever used during practical operations. The rolling program of the blooming mill is varied, both in the size of the ingots to be handled and in the steel grades. The total tonnage handled by the mill is about 2,000,000 ingot tons per year. At the time of the investigation, the Bloom Mill Dept. was equipped with 22 soaking pits (6 regenerative, 14 bottom-fired, and 2 one-way top-fired pits) with a total bottom area of 2770 sq ft. The pits are fired with a blast furnace-coke oven gas mixture having a calorific value of 155 Btu per cu ft. The foregoing figures show that the production program was such as to impose the necessity of a most efficient usage of the available equipment. For this purpose, the operations of the 44 in. mill and of the soaking pits were investigated, and the results of the investigation were used as a basis for a revised soaking pit schedule and drafting practice. The plasticity of an ingot of a certain chemical composition when being rolled is determined mainly by the following factors: I—the ingot size, both thickness and width; 2—the length of the gas soak; and 3—the surface temperature. The first two factors determine the uniformity of the temperature distribution over the cross-section of an ingot. The third factor introduces the level of the heating of an ingot. The torque produced by an ingot being rolled is determined by the area of the metal displaced, its plasticity, and acceleration values. On the other hand, with shunt motors the torque is determined by the current. This can be assumed to be correct with only a small degree of error for compound motors with a relatively small effect of the series windings as long as the velocity is not regulated by weakening the field. Since the spread is relatively unimportant when compared to the width of an ingot and since it is also reduced several times during rolling by edging passes, the draft alone and not the area of the metal displaced may be taken into consideration with ingots of a similar size. It is therefore possible to determine the main features of the heating and drafting of an ingot by measuring the current and acceleration of the mill motor. After the acceleration has been taken into account, the amount of current will be an indication of how the motor responds to a heating and/or drafting practice and these practices can be adjusted in order to get the desired result. As peak currents are more likely when heavier ingots are rolled, the rolling of plate and slab ingots was investigated. Conditions prevailing when smaller ingots are rolled can be deduced from the results obtained on heavier ingots. All measurements were made when plain carbon grades under 0.15 pct C were rolled. The motor current, the voltage across the armature, and the rpm were recorded simultaneously on synchronized charts, Fig. 1, which moved with the speed of 6 in. per min. Each draft was recorded by a special observer. The rpm curve made it possible to establish the acceleration at any given moment. For purposes of correlation, the maximum current during a pass and the corresponding acceleration were used. The charts made it possible to establish the position of the roller's lever at any given moment as well as the total time of a pass. The slab ingots were divided into three groups (28x35, 28x45, and 27Mx53 in. ingots) and each group was investigated separately. Since they account for most of the current peaks, only flat passes were used for purposes of correlation, a total of 1373 having been investigated.

Investigations were carried out on the effect of polyslip on the strain hardening of aluminum single crystals. The orientations investigated were those lor which the tensile axis was in the [001], [111], [112], and [012] directions plus another for which the Schmid angles for {111}(110) slip were 1 deg. The experimental data were analyzed on a model based on the intersection of dislocations with particular emphasis on the effect of polyslip on the activation volume for inter-section. It is shown that the rate of strain hardening inreases for those orientations wherein attractive dislocation intersections occur and that those orientations which produce the greater number of such intersections exhibit the greater strain hardening. Good correlation of the data is obtained with the concept that attractive junctions, as proposed by Saada, Play an important role in accounting for the rate of strain hardening. EXISTING concepts on the nature and cause of strain hardening in fcc metals have been deduced principally from experiments on the deformation of single crystals under single slip. The effect of crystal orientation on the shapes of the stress-strain curves for single slip have been summarized by seegerl and more recently by Clarebrough and Hargreaves.2 Tensile specimens whose axes fall near the center of the [001]-[011] line of the standard triangle of the stereographic projection exhibit the longest range of easy glide (Stage I) and the lowest rates of linear hardening (Stage 11) whereas specimens whose axes lie near fie [001]-[111] line of the standard triangle have limited or no easy-glide range and exhibit somewhat higher linear strain-hardening rates. Specimens whose axes lie near the [001] or the [ill] poles do not exhibit easy glide and have the highest rates of linear hardening. Kocks3 has shown that the highest rates of linear hardening Occur under Polyslip when the tensile axis coincides with the [111] or the [ 001] pole. Since the rate of strain hardening is sensitive to specimen orientation and the incidence of polyslip, these relationships might help to discriminate between various dislocation models for strain hardening in fcc metals. Previous attempts to analyze the effect of orientation on strain hardening,1"3 however, did not provide a unique answer to this problem. Consequently the present investigation was undertaken wherein additional data, particularly that for the effect of polyslip on the activation volume for intersection, was also determined in order to provide more complete information on the details of strain hardening. The increase in industrial demand is responsible for a consequent evolution in the process of injection of aluminum under pressure (Die Casting) to achieve requirements such as; greater geometric complexity of injected parts, larger dimensions, hard-filled cavities, thin walls, and more refined mechanical and aesthetic requirements. Thus, the industries have searched for sensible increases in pressure and injection speed, always combining the best resistance and performance of the wells submitted to the new process conditions. The need for more aggressive applications for the cavities means that there is a constant evolution of the entire production chain in the manufacture of molds, passing through several processes, among them; machining, designs with complex engineering solutions, refining in the process of heat treatments and surface treatments. Allied to these needs, high performance steels manufactured by differentiated processes with high fracture resistance, hot strength and wear must be selected. This work aims to present the main factors considered in the development of high performance molds, the engineering of materials involved, technological trends and technical engineering solutions for the different variables of the die casting process.

"Composite agglomeration process (CAP) is an innovative method for preparing blast furnace burden. For CAP, the classified raw materials of pelletizing feeds and matrix feeds are mixed, charged and sintered. The characteristics of these two kinds of feeds obviously affect the permeability of per-ignition bed, as well as the sinter productivity and quality. In this study, the Ergun equation is proposed to predict the pressure drop of CAP bed using the particle size distribution. The calculation process indicates that the Dv and the Em are the two tuning parameters. The results show that there is a gap between the calculated values by Ergun equation and the measured results by pressure drop testing facility. Eliminated this error by modified the Ergun equation and then validated it through experimental studies using simulated CAP mix and test facility. Therefore, the modified Ergun equation can be used to predict the permeability of CAP bed.IntroductionThe sintering process is one of predominant agglomeration processes for preparing ironmaking burden from iron-bearing materials. Sinter accounts for 70-80% of the blast furnace burden in China and the continuous improvement of sinter quality provides a guarantee to anterograde production of blast furnace. In a leach pile, the drainage layer or commonly known as the cover layer has been a matter of discussion due to the multiple phenomena or events that occur within it which impacts negatively the leaching process. All these events are directly related to the loss of draining capacity and irregular flow net due to an excessive compaction and entrapment of fines reducing the flow velocity which in turn cause more fines to get trapped. Over time the problem will continue to worsen rapidly and accelerating continuously like a geometric progression. When the cover layer gets to a certain level of deterioration, the only alternative to continue operating safely is to replace the entire cover material, a huge cost for any mining operation. TESRA has developed a solution to counteract the accelerated advance of the deterioration of the drainage layer. The solution consists of using large agricultural tractors coupled to a proprietary design of a heavy- duty subsoiler-ripper for deep tillage for loosening and breaking up the ground at various depth and with different legs spacing from 0.4 m or above. Also, if the ground still requires additional breaking, TESRA proposes the use of a rototiller that breaks any lumps to homogenize the ground to a certain particle size. With the subsoiler-ripper/rototiller combination equipment a layer of 0.5 m deep is properly treated to match closely the original conditions of the ground thus regaining the flow net as close as to the original seepage condition. Once the ripping is completed the subsoiler-ripper tool is replaced with another that is similar to a plow and thus continue with the installation of drainage pipes. The tool digs a Y-type profile trench allowing the pipe to sit precisely at the bottom of the trench, contributing additional lateral and lower support. This tool controls the installation depth of the drainage pipe at different inclination grades and also eliminating any irregularities that may block the flow of the leaching solution. Sometimes the obstructions block completely the flow of the solution. The main result of this methodology is the reduction of groundwater levels and at least 2% less humidity in the leaching gravel due to an increase in the draining capacity of cover. The methodology developed by TESRA applied during a couple of cycles of a dynamic leach pile has proven to be a real alternative to remedy and recuperate the cover close to its original conditions. The methodology requires only one large tractor and two accessories operated in different stages while replacing the more traditional and less efficient machinery such as the Bulldozer, Motor-grader, and backhoes.

Bromide stabilizes the auric or aurous ion by forming a stable complex in acidic aqueous solution. The oxidizing agent normally used for the process is bromine, which is a corrosive liquid with high vapour pressure. This is, in fact, the main reason why it has not found acceptance yet as an industrial oxidant for gold. Ferric ion with hydrogen peroxide and/or sodium hypochlorite have already proved to be effective oxidants for the dissolution of gold from a rotating disc in a bromide-containing aqueous solution. In the present work, preliminary tests with four selected ore samples were tested to evaluate the dissolution of gold with the same system already tested with the rotating disc (Br-/Fe3+/H2o2/NaCIO). Compared to the conventional cyanidation, results were superior in one instance only. The major obstacle seems to be the maintenance of a suitable potential to allow the complex formation. However, the studied system may be interesting, is in some situations it may yield better results than conventional cyanidation; therefore, further investigation seems to be worth doing.
