Inflation and burgeoning costs are two among many factors which have generated a new surge of interest in "fringe benefits" (sometimes referred to as "supplementary remuneration" or "supplementary compensation"). Other specialized forms of compensation ("perks", in the vernacular) such as company cars, windowed offices, etc., which also are the subjects of current study, are outside the scope of this paper. For businesses, interest in fringe benefits is based on concern for employees? welfare, compliance with government requirements, and an increasingly burdensome impact on bottom lines. In 1980, according to Fred D. Lindsey in the October 1980 issue of Nation's Business, employee benefits will cost American employers an estimated $420 billion. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "some fringes!" Indeed, few if any administrators consider employee benefits as fringes. Employee benefits impact other major areas of a company's operations as well. As listed by Beadle (1980), these areas include employee relations, collective bargaining, short-term costs, long-range funding, manpower planning, compliance with legislation, taxation for the company and for the employee, corporate image in the community, competitiveness for staff, communications, administration, claims cost containment, etc., etc.

Copper concentrate smelting directly in P-S converters was started at Onahama Smelter in 1983. Thereafter, the tonnage of concentrate smelted through the P-S converters increased, such that by 2002, it equaled the tonnage smelted through the reverberatory furnaces. In 2003, 56% of the total copper concentrates treated at Onahama Smelter were processed directly through the P-S converters. Technical improvements are reviewed and advantages of direct smelting in P-S converters are reported.

This preliminary statement presents some of the results of tests carried out at the Lakeside Station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co. , by the fuel section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation of New York . The object of these tests was to determine the thermal efficiency , ease of operation , and other particulars of a boiler equipped with specially designed furnace and burners for burning powdered coal . The boiler tested haş 13380 square feet of heating surface , and is one of eight boilers equipped with the Lopulco powdered coal system supplying steam to two 20,000 -Kw . steam turbines in the largest power house burning powdered coal . Twenty- six tests were run at rates of heat transference varying from 4000 to 8000 B.t.u. per square foot of boiler heating surface , and the mean thermal efficiency attained was about 84 per cent , based on the gross calorific value of the fuel as fired . The efficiency varied little with the rate of steaming , and its high value is accounted for by the small loss from incomplete combustion and the small amount of excess air which varied from 5 to 36 per cent . The coal burned had a gross calorific value of about 11500 to 12800 B.t.u. per pound , contained 2 to 5 per cent moisture , 33 to 36 per cent volatile matter and 9 to 13 per cent ash, and was so ground thaf 89 to 95 per cent would pass through a 100- mesh sieve . The ash had a softening point of 2150 to 2450 degrees F. , but did not fuse together at the bottom of the furnace because it was partly protected from the flame radiation by means of a series of water tubes connected to the boiler which were placed between the fumace bottom and the flame, ..

The national mine-safety demonstration at Pittsburgh, Pa., was projected and undertaken in the hope that it would aid the increase of safety in the mining industry. That the national mine-safety demonstration was warranted and has served a useful purpose was evidenced by the attendance, not only at the public demonstration in Forbes Field, but also at the more special exhibit of the work of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds and at the experimsntal. mine. Nearly 2,000 persons witnessed the demonstrations and exhibits of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds on the morning of October 30, 1911. The spectators were all mine operators, miners, or persons interested in mining, and represented operations in all parts of the United States. Nearly 1,200 of these persons visited the bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton to witness ~th~explosion of coal dust. Had the weather, which was exceptionally inclement, been more favorable, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. At the public demonstration in Forbes Field, which· was witnessed by President Taft, from 12,000 to 15,000 persons, chiefly mining men, were present and attested their interest and enthusiasm in the minesafety exhibits by remaining throughout the proceedings, regardless of the rain which fell all the morning .. Sincethis demonstration, the organization of first-aid corps and of rescue corps has been undertaken at mines where there had previously been no such organizations. The bureau has received letters of commendation attesting the value of the demonstration in drawing· attention to the dangers and to possible means of greater safety in mining. Many of these letters have urged that the results of the demonstration be published for the guidance and instruction of those who were present. In response to these reauests the following account of the mine- BlIIeLY demonstration lias been prepared. IIi its preparation various division and section chiefs of the Bureau of Mines have cooperated. The authors acknowledge the assistance they have received from those section chiefs and other members of the bureau who contributed detailed descriptions of apparatus exhibited at the demonstration or of investigations represented.

On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

Over the last three years there has been an increase in mining congress and conferences focusing on water management. Water in mining is a key concern for mine managers and operations, and we are now seeing this operational dilemma escalated to the level it deserves. According to Frost & Sullivan research, mining water and wastewater treatment and its related technologies will be a U$3.6 Billion global market in 2016, which translates the importance of this issue. Looking at the current mining trends, some factors increased the importance of water in mining operations, including: ? The behavior of gas-storage reservoirs subject to water drive is investigated through analog simulation on an electronic differential analyzer. The simulation technique developed on an LM-10 computer permits the prediction of reservoir volume or pressure resulting from the movement of water in the surrounding aquifer. The method developed on the analog computer consists of setting up an appropriate transfer-function circuit and feeding the arbitrary time-varying boundary conditions as an input signal. The input may be specified as gas reservoir pressure, pore volume or the water flux. Several cases studied include an isolated gas reservoir on a limited aquifer, interference among three reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer and the growth of gas-storage volume on an aquifer. It is concluded that the method developed on an electronic differential analyzer provides an excellent technique to simulate and investigate the behavior of gas reservoirs subject to water drive. The agreement between the reservoir performance as predicted from the simulation technique and as measured from actual field data is found to be better than the range usually encountered in predicting water-drive behavior. INTRODUCTION It is generally known that some gas-storage reservoirs are located on top of blanket sands of large extent, saturated with brine called aquifers. Because the volume of the body of water associated with aquifers is usually very large and water is compressible, the cyclic pressure variations encountered in normal storage service inevitably cause unsteady, compressible flow conditions in the adjacent aquifers. The solution to radial diffusivity equation for a limited aquifer for constant terminal conditions has been know111 since the early 1930's. The solution for the constant terminal conditions for an infinite aquifer was puhlished in 1949.2 The proldem of handling the unsteady flow of water through a porous medium with time-varying boundary conditions has been studied by many investigators through the use of graphical,3 digital4 computing techniques or on an R-C type of electrical analog called a reservoir analyzer.5 The digital computer performs a series of arithmetic calculations to superimpose the solutions of constant terminal conditions, while the R-C type of analyzer permits the simulation of the continuous medium by means of "lumped-cell" electrical resistance and capacitance elements based on finite-difference approximations. The graphical method is based on the convolution integral solution of the partial differential equalion. The purpose of the present study was to simulate the behavior of an aquifer on a general-purpose, electronic differential analyzer to obtain the influx of water or the change in pressure at the reservoir continuous1r and quickly. The use of the electronic differential analyzer was based on well known solutions for the constant terminal conditions already available in the literature.2,6-8 THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT MODEL. The gas reservoir (R) is described in relation to an aquifer in Fig. 1. The permeability and porosity of an aquifer sand, the viscosity of the brine, and the compressibility of the brine and the formation are assumed to be constant. It further is assumed that the blanket sand is not thick enough to give appreciable vertical pressure distribution. The model in consideration is circular with radial geometry. Two facets of surface mining were studied: feasibility of using training simulators to increase productivity of haulage trucks, front-end loaders, and shovels; and improving the efficiency of dragline operations with a computer-aided analysis of dragline usage and the addition of an on-board operator display. Training costs per student were estimated based on current training practices. Training objectives were derived from task: analyses of haulage trucks, front-end loaders, and shovels. The cost effectiveness of training simulators was determined. A computer-aided analysis defined the critical performance parameters. An on-board operator's display is recommended to improve operator efficiency.

As all of us know, the "heat" is on for western coal. The need for western coal is critical if the nation is to reach the goals of Project Independence by 1985. Without the development of western coal, the goals will not be met. It's that simple! That's because 50 percent of our nation's coal reserves lie in the states of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And surface mining is the key to unlocking these reserves. Of the nine states in the coal provinces, five-Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona-are the best examples since surface mining accounts for 88 to 100 percent of the coal mined in each of these states. Collectively, their annual production more than doubled between 1969 and 1972, rising to 35 million tons per year. And, taken individually, each state's production has more than doubled, also. Total annual production from these five key states could very well exceed 180 million tons per year by 1980-four times the 1972 production level. The biggest producer among the five is Wyoming. Wyoming's production tripled since 1969 to nearly 14 million tons in 1973. So the heat is on for western coal, especially from Wyoming. Now we come to the question of how to mine this increasingly precious mineral. What are the available methods? First, let's take a brief look at several characteristics of western coal deposits.

"Gas purging systems are well established in nonferrous metallurgy at multiple steps during metal production, including melting, converting, alloying, and metal cleaning. Since the kinetics of all of these stages are positively influenced by using gas purging systems the overall process benefits are substantial. In the aluminum industry, inert or reaction gases are blown into the melt using porous plugs to achieve improved metal grades, higher productivity, and more efficient energy utilization. To enable the most effective application of the process gases a complete package, termed AL KIN, was developed by RHI that includes porous plugs, refractory expertise, gas supply technology, and gas control equipment. This paper discusses the technological and economic advantages of this system and the specific benefits of fuel reduction, production time savings, decreased process gas consumption, and improved refractory service life and maintenance are illustrated using an aluminum slug plant in Austria.IntroductionIn addition to high quality production, increasing productivity is the main goal in many aluminum cast houses to maintain or even strengthen their market position. The Neuman Aluminium Group, based in Austria, North America, and based in Austria, North America, and China, is the largest slugproducer for tubes, cans, and automotive parts worldwide. Recently, a comprehensive improvement program was initiated at the Neuman Aluminium Austria slug plant in Marktl - the main factory and technological centre of the group. The principal goal of the optimization project was to increase the productivity of the strip-casting production. The investment included a gas purging system, ingot preheating equipment, a new insulated launder system, and optimized melting cycles. However, the introduction of the gas purging system was pivotal to the project and has accounted for approximately 50% of the benefits achieved. This paper describes the AL KIN gas purging technology and details the process benefits resulting from the improvements at Neuman Aluminium Austria."

WHEN excavations are made, at depth, in hard brittle rock structures, as in certain mines in India, in South Africa, and in Ontario, the pressure due to overburden, together perhaps with inherent geologic strain, tends to become concentrated in the walls of some of these openings and the rock bursts, often closing the adjacent drifts and scopes and presenting a serious menace to the miners. Where the rock is much fractured and faulted, the danger is greater, since the pressures tend to shift without warning from point to point, sometimes within a few hours. Attempts have been repeatedly made to find some physical property of the rock which will change with pressure, which can be measured for rock 'in place' in the mine, and which will give an indication of the state of strain, thus warning of an approach to bursting conditions. Some of the properties tested have been the speed of propagation of elastic waves in the suspect rock, variations in temperature due to pressure changes, rate of closure of openings or shifts along fault planes, strain gauge measures, and others. Each of these has proved unsatisfactory for the purpose. The most promising method so far proposed has been the study of the very faint, sub-audible snaps (microseismims) which are produced in rocks under pressure. Such a study has been in progress at Lake Shore Mines since May, 1942. Instruments designed to pick up, amplify, and record the microseismims were perfected and a programme of observing, using the microseismic method, has been carried through with persistent diligence and at considerable expense. In 1943, experience with the method in a pillar section on the west side of the Lake Shore mine gave much promise of predicting bursts. A very heavy burst on January 29th of that year occurred in the exact section of the mine covered by the instruments, and the records indicated a measure of prediction. In response to repeated requests for information, a number of reports were given out, among others a radio talk by the writer over CJKL (Kirkland Lake), which was reported in full in the Northern News . Also, a detailed account of the occurrence was given in an illustrated paper by the writer (l).

This paper gives a description of the methods of mining employed at North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W.GEOLOGICAL NOTESThe main Broken Hill lode occurs as a replacement of tightly folded pre-Cambrian sediments. Replacement has followed certain stratigraphical horizons and the main bulk of the ore is found where these have been packed into the noses of anticlinal and synclinal folds.Throughout the mine the ore-bearing folds pitch north fairly consistently at 45 degrees, as a result of which two favourable horizons in the same fold appear in plan as separate orebodies and these are referred to as the "Southern Orebody" and the "Northern Orebody" respectively.The general dip of the orebodies to the west is about 60 degrees. A typical sill is shown in the plan of the 1,400-ft level (Fig. 1).Both the hanging wall and footwall rocks throughout the mine are weak and, as a result, it is necessary that the hanging wall must be well supported after ore extraction, to prevent subsidence. The weakness in the footwall is confined to a narrow zone, approximately 60 feet in width. "The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. "IntroductionThe history of iron ore production in the United States has followed a pattern not far different from that set in the production of non-ferrous ores; the first interest of the prospector and miner being the discovery and development of high-grade ores. In the early stages of development of most mining districts, high-cost low-grade ores are usually of slight interest due to the additional capital investment required in concentrating plants, as well as the increased requirements of •power and other facilities. As the reserves of higher grade ores are depleted and the technical knowledge of ore beneficiation is broadened, production of concentrates from the lower grade ores is stimulated.The real stimulus necessary to arouse serious consideration of beneficiated iron ore in the Lake Superior district has been provided by the serious inroads made in the high-grade ore reserves by two World Wars.The first shipment of high-grade iron ore from the Mesabi range in Minnesota was recorded in 1892, and the first token shipment of concentrates was made 15 years later, in 1907. Not until 1910 did the production of concentrates assume any great importance. A steady increase in concentrate production over the years is shown by the fact that, in 1910, concentrates accounted for 8 per cent of the total shipments from the State, whereas by the time of World War II this percentage had increased to 22 per cent and by 1948 had risen to 26 per cent. It seems a safe assumption that the shipment of concentrated iron ore, from the Mesabi range in particular, will continue to increase even more rapidly from now on, with other iron ranges of the Lake Superior district following this lead."

"The large extent of global production and consumption of aggregates from quarries, grabs one´s attention and makes its substantial and essential standpoint in the world today pretty clear. A great amount of aggregates is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway industry, concrete production, etc. Considering this fact that igneous rocks display a higher strength and abrasion resistance, this type of rock is preferred in the field of civil engineering. For all these applications, rock quality assurance is a key factor and certainly unavoidable, and it has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure or in other words, their disintegration and degradation. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as Glycol test, methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test have been introduced to distinguish these rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been limited to some specific cases, and they are neither recommendable nor advantageous. In addition, these methods provide partially different results for the same rock. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used day to day in a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. This scientific research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. This method was developed, based on the procedure of the magnetic susceptibility measurement. The obtained values can lead to valuable information regarding the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. This approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies. A detailed and comprehensive discussion will be made on the results of the experiments. The advantages and impacts of the application of this method, on increasing the reserves and environmental protection are also discussed."

INTRODUCTION Efficient exploration methodologies for base metal deposits have huge benefits for future deep sea mining endeavours, and underwater hyperspectral imaging (UHI) has been variably demonstrated to have applications in the identification and characterisation of mineralisation on the seafloor for both nodules and seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) (Dumke et al., 2018 and 2017 respectively). Due to growing resource requirements (Singer, 2017), SMS deposits are considered to be increasingly significant sources of copper and zinc, as well as silver and gold. This style of mineralisation is currently occurring at active hydrothermal vents (black and white smokers) but now-inactive sites also have the potential to be large mineral deposits. As such, the development of novel methodologies to detect both on-going and extinct mineralisations are of high importance. Geological setting During the MarMine cruise (Ludvigsen et al., 2016), non-mineralised host rock, low grade ore and high grade ore grab samples (Snook et al., 2018) was collected by ROV from the Loki’s Castle deposit (Pedersen et al., 2010), located on the Mohn’s/Knipovich junction on the ultra-slow spreading Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR), at a depth of approximately 2300 m. This material has been characterised as part of the MarMine project (e.g. Snook et al., 2017), and, by imaging compositionally constrained material, the measured hyperspectral responses can be used to generate a library for identification of deposits on the ocean floor. UHI technology Remote sensing with hyperspectral and multispectral technologies has seen wide use in prospecting for ores and hydrocarbons on land (Van der Meer et al., 2012). Iron oxides and sulphides have low blue reflectance and high red reflectance in the visible spectrum. The ratio between these two pairs has been used in exploration for terrestrial deposits of hydrothermal origin (Sabins, 1999). This discrimination typically also includes wavelengths exceeding the visible spectrum (1.5µm – 2.5µm). These wavelengths are typically not utilised underwater because infrared wavelengths and higher are rapidly attenuated in water. However, discrimination based on the full shape of the spectral response in the visible light (350nm – 800nm) may still be possible (Bolin and Moon, 2003). Resolving the endmembers from the spectral responses requires prior knowledge about the optical properties of the materials, i.e. their reflectance. These reflectances can be obtained in a controlled environment, where the spectra of the lamps, wavelength- dependent attenuation in water and scattering of light can be accounted for (Johnsen, 2013).

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a process for removing SO2 from stack gases. The process comprises absorption of SO2 in an. aqueous solution of sodium citrate, citric acid, and sodium thiosulfate, followed by reaction of the absorbed SO2 with H2S to precipitate sulfur and regenerate the citrate solution for recycle. A pilot plant was operated at The Bunker Hill Co. lead smelter in Kellogg, Idaho, to assess the feasibility of using the process for flue gas desulfurization. Nominal capacity of the pilot plant, which treated .tail gas from the lead smelter sintering furnace, was 1699 standard meters cubed per hour (15 degrees celsius) of 0.3- to 0.7-percent-SO2 gas yielding about 272 net kilograms of sulfur per day. The pilot plant was operated for about 4500 hours and produced more than 45 net tonnes of sulfur. The operation demonstrated that (1) more than 95 percent of the SO2 could be removed from the lead smelter sintering furnace tail gases, (2) regeneration of the citrate solution with H2S and precipitation of sulfur in conventional stirred vessels was readily controlled and highly efficient, (3) the precipitated sulfur could be continuously recovered as a 99.5-percent-pure product by kerosine flotation and melting, and (4) the 77- to 79-percent-H2S gas used for sulfur precipitation could be readily produced from pilot plant product sulfur, natural gas, and steam. Projected operating costs, including capital charges, for a citrate plant, installed at a 118 000-tonne-per-year lead smelter and treating 49 271 standard meters cubed per hour of lead smelter sintering furnace tail gas, are estimated to be $384 per tonne of sulfur.
