"Flotation is generally regarded as a process that is only applicable to metallic minerals. However, its scope is now known to be greater than this, because some of the nonmetallic minerals are floatable, such as graphite, sulphur, and fluorite. Recent observations show that limestone may be added to the list of floatable nonmetallic minerals. Such work is being done on a laboratory scale at the Southern Experiment Station (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) of the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, where experimental magnetic concentration of the low-grade iron ores of the Birmingham district is in progress. Certain experiments have demonstrated that the limestone may be floated from the magnetic log-washer tailing, and then incorporated in the iron concentrate.If the loss of lime could be prevented, some ores though low in iron and high in insoluble contain enough lime to make their concentrates self-fluxing. Since this loss in the magnetic log-washer can not be avoided, the Time must be recovered from the tailing by some method and added to the magnetic iron concentrate before sintering. Then the resulting concentrate will be self-fluxing.While seeking a suitable means of treating the tailing for recovery of lime, flotation was tried. It was at once evident that this method had possibilities, during the early part of the investigation, soap solution made from a common soap was used as a flotation reagent. The froth obtained was a fairly good lime concentrate. This result was an important clue, and led to tests with the use of such reagents as oleic acid and sodium oleate. Later, cresol, creosote, coal tar and other similar flotation reagents were tested in combination with the oleic acid and soap solutions. As a result, oleic acid and cresol used together were found to be satisfactory.The tailing from the magnetic log-washer is in excellent physical condition fur flotation. The iron ore had been ground in a ball mill to 100 mesh for magnetic concentration. Hence the bond between the lime carbonate and the other constituents of the tailing was well broken."

Microstructural studies of a Mg-10.3 pct Al alloy showed that discontinuous precipitation during aging multiplies the grain boundary area available for easy deformation in elevated temperature creep. An increase of strain rate for a 6.2 pct Al alloy at 400°F, where precipitation and creep are concurrent, caused an increase in the volume percentage discontinuously precipitated at the completion of the process. The relatively poor elevated temperature creep resistance of heat treated alloys of the Mg-AI-Zn type was explained in these structural terms. C resistance of the heat treatable Mg-A1 based alloys is poor compared to that of Mg-Ce based alloys. While the latter show a continuous precipitate, Mg-A1 alloys prefer a discontinuous precipitate at grain boundaries. '.:' It has been concluded that the excellent creep resistance of Mg-Ce alloys was primarily due to the continuous precipitation which especially localized at the grain boundaries.' The purpose of the present investigation was to obtain a parallel correlation, if such exists, between the poor creep resistance and the state of precipitation in Mg-A1 alloys. Discontinuous precipitation produces about three times as many true grain boundaries as originally existed. This microstructure would be expected to have a marked influence in creep, where quantity of grain boundary area is important. Experimental Procedure The two experimental alloys contained 6.2 and 10.3 pct Al. They were made from electrolytic magnesium by alloying under flux and casting in 3 in. diam permanent molds. The ingots were extruded into 1 1/4 x 1/8 in. flat stock under the following conditions: billet preheat 700°F (2 hr), container and die temperature 700°F, speed 3 fpm, and area reduction ratio 45:1. The creep specimens were machined from blanks which had been solution heat treated 24 hr at 770°F and aged 16 hr at 400°F. Attempts were made to control the grain size as closely as possible for extruded stock. The grain size after solution heat treatment was about two thousandths of an inch for the 6.2 and five thousandths for the 10.3 pct Al alloy.

Generalized conditions for rod or ribbon growth by the twin plane re-entrant edge mechanism are given. It was shown that this mechanism can result in growth of twinned platelets from dilute metal solutions. The platelrts 01 the fee metals are faceted by (111) planes and contain two or more twin planes. Microsegregation traces were revealed in silver grown from a thallium solution. VOGEL has already set down conditions for dendritic growth;1 however, this was the normal single-crystal dendritic growth experienced during solidification. In this work it is desired to set down the crystallographic conditions that will lead to rod or ribbon growth with smooth facets. These are as follows. a) The growth must be crystallographically limited (i.e., faceted growth). b) In order to have directed growth, some mechanism must allow easier nucleation than two-dimensional nucleation. That mechanism is afforded by the re-entrant edges at twin planes.213 Thus there must be twin planes present in the rods or ribbons. c) The growth direction must lie in the twin plane. If not, the twin plane will grow to the face or side of the ribbon and the site of easy nucleation will be lost. d) The growth direction must be parallel to at least one plane of the faceting planes, and no set of the faceting planes can be perpendicular to the growth direction. A corollary to these conditions involves the number of twin planes necessary to maintain the indestructible re-entrant edge. The number depends on the crystal structure of the material. An analysis of the data available shows that a material whose faceting planes form an open figure requires at least one twin plane while materials whose faceting planes form a closed figure require at least two twin planes in order to form the indestructible re-entrant edges for extended growth. The conditions and an assessment of the possibility of rod or ribbon growth are given in Table I for several crystal systems. As can be seen the fee, diamond and zinc blende, or-thorhombic, rhombohedral, and one form of the hexagonal lattice systems can yield this type of growth, but not the bcc metals nor the hexagonal

8.1 INTRODUCTION Several methods currently exist by which gold may be recovered from a pregnant leach liquor. Two of these methods are discussed in this chapter, the Merrill-Crowe (zinc cementation) process and the carbon adsorption process. These two methods represent the most frequently used techniques for gold extraction and are, -in fact, used almost exclusively in U.S. heap leaching operations. Because of the efficiency and ease of use of these two methods, it is extremely likely they will continue to be quite prevalent within the gold mining industry in years to come. The remainder of this chapter includes information on the history of the two processes, descriptions of the actual processes, criteria to consider in selecting a recovery process, and commercial design and construction considerations for both of the gold recovery methods. As with other chapters in this book, some fairly technical information is presented for the benefit of those readers needing a greater level of detail. However, the overall intent of the chapter is to provide an overview of the processes likely to be used in gold extraction, thus giving the reader a firm basis for more technical research into the topic, should this be needed. 8.1.1 History of Zinc Cementation During the late 18901s, zinc cementation was introduced for the precipitation of gold and silver from cyanide solutions. This occurred at about the same time as the introduction of the cyanidation process, the history of which is recapped in Chapter 1. The initial cementation process involved introduction of a gold-bearing cyanide solution onto a bed of zinc shavings. It proved to be quite inefficient because the reaction rate was very slow. The zinc quickly became "passive", inhibiting further gold deposition. Shortly after this first introduction, zinc precipitation was improved by adding a lead salt (usually lead nitrate) to the zinc. This allowed a zinc-lead couple to form on the surface of the shavings, eliminating passivation of zinc surfaces and thereby allowing continued deposition of gold. "In the present research, a deposited brown coal fly ash was used as raw material for geopolymer. The reactivity of the fly ash was altered using mechanical activation, which is one of the promising methods to improve bulk and surface reactivity. The mechanical activation experiments were carried out in a high energy density mill using 5 m/s circumferential speed, and various residence times (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 60 min). The effect of mechanical activation on particle size distribution was measured by a laser particle size analyzer and structural changes using FT-IR. Geopolymer samples were prepared from mechanically activated fly ash with an alkali solution. The progress of geopolymerisation was monitored using an Isothermal Conduction Calorimeter. The heat flow curve obtained indicated that reactions were more prominent and started much earlier in the mechanically activated samples. This observation is further supported by the compressive strength results which also improved in geopolymers using mechanically activated fly ash. Based on the obtained results, it can be inferred that mechanical activation is a possible way to enhance the reactivity of fly ash and consequently properties of resulting geopolymers.INTRODUCTIONCoal fired power plants generate fly ash and slag in huge amount worldwide, about 780 million tons/year (Heidrich et al. 2013). Due to the relatively low utilization rate, enormous quantities of these wastes are landfilled in ponds. The fly ash is the finest grained particle fraction of the solid ash, which is transported with flue gas, and removed by electrostatic or bag filters. The fly ash has pozzolanic activity, it does not react with water, but in the presence of calcium hydroxide solution hardens and solidifies, producing a reaction product practically insoluble in water (Opoczky, 2001). The most important property of the fly ash regarding geopolymerization is its reactivity, which depends on the chemical and phase composition, the dispersity (specific surface area, particle size distribution), and the morphology of the fly ash particles, and determined by the physical properties and chemical composition of the fly ash. Geopolymers concerning their chemical structure are polysialates, where the sialate (silicon-oxoaluminate) network is built up from the bonds of Si-oxide and Al-oxide by sharing oxygen atoms (Davidovits, 1988)."

Neutron capture prompt gamma-ray analysis provides the best method for on-line analysis of the elemental composition of large volumes of bulk material. This paper summarizes the Monte Carlo models which simulate the radiation transport within two such analyzer systems; namely, the borehole configuration and the conveyor belt configuration. The models are useful in the design optimization of the analyzer systems, in minimizing the amount of experimental calibration data for calibrating these analyzers, and in investigating the detection sensitivity for different elements. The computational scheme in these models is made extremely efficient by the use of various powerful variance reduction methods and by efficient data management. Experimental verifications of the two models carried out in the laboratory indicate very good agreement with the Monte Carlo results.

APATITE, the most abundant crystalline phosphate mineral, is found in igneous rocks and probably is the primary origin of all other phosphates, whether mineral or organic. Its chemical formula may be expressed as Ca5(Cl,F) (PO4) 3. The chlorine may be replaced almost entirely by the fluorine. It is found in large or small hexagonal prisms, usually of a vitreous luster and a green or red color, but also violet, white, or yellow. It is found largely as an accessory mineral in granitoid rocks. Its hardness is 4.5 to 5 and its specific gravity is about 3.2. There are many other phosphate minerals-for instance, amblygonite, autonite, collophane, lazulite, monazite, pyromorphite, torbenite, triphylite, turquoise, vivanite, wavellite-with base elements of calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum, manganese, lead, cerium, lanthanum, lithium, or several of these in combination and with various amounts of water of crystallization. However, these phosphate minerals have but little value save as specimens for mineral collections, the exception perhaps being turquoise. While large deposits of igneous apatite are mined today for the production of fertilizers and chemicals, more than 90 pct of the world phosphate production is derived from secondary apatites, called phosphorites. These calcium (and magnesium, aluminum, and iron) phosphates have been formed in the alteration of sediments by solutions containing phosphoric acid. Such solutions have come from the weathering or leaching of igneous rocks containing apatite, bone deposits of prehistoric animals and marine life, or guano deposits (excreta of birds). These phosphorites are mostly alterations of phosphatic limestones that took place slowly over many years. Whether it is apatite or phosphorite that is being produced, it is known in the trade as "phosphate rock." The sedimentary phosphate deposits are of marine origin. Some, as laid down, were rich in phosphate or have become so by subsequent subaqueous action and have not been further enriched since emergence from the sea. An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

Extensive exploration for uranium metal by the Department of Atomic Energy in India led to the discovery of new carbonate host rock uranium deposits Tummalapalle and Gogi, which are located in southern part of India. Alkaline leaching at elevated temperature and pressure using autoclave is the central unit process in the overall strategy for extraction of uranium from these new ore deposits. Autoclave leaching is affected largely by intrinsic nature of the ore and by the process variables and the equipment settings. In order to understand such a complex process and also to be able to predict the process performance under randomly (ore grade, uranium mineralogy, gangue mineralogy etc.) and consciously perturbed variable settings (partial pressure of oxygen, temperature, concentration of leachant, stirring speed and time), sound and robust mathematical models are needed with analytical and/or numerical solutions. Present investigation attempts to develop a variant of kinetic correlation based on shrinking core model for batch alkaline leaching process in an autoclave. The leaching model incorporates particle size distribution according to popular Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation, rather than assuming a single mean size for all the particles participating in the leaching reaction. Kinetic experimental data generated in autoclave leaching of Gogi uranium ore was used to evaluate various constants of the model developed. The ore sample used for experiments assayed 0.21 per cent U3O8. The partial pressure of oxygen was varied between 0.15 to 6.5 atm, temperature from 343 K to 438 K, concentration of sodium carbonate leachant in the range 0.47 g mol/L to 0.94 g mol/L, and the stirring speed from 573 rev/min to 900 rev/min in the experiments. The goodness of fit of the leaching process model is found to be >0.95. Morphological studies carried out on leached and unleached particulate matter using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X ray analyses are included in the present study.

"Goldcorp’s Hoyle Pond mine has recently completed several projects which have impacted the overall ventilation system. The project includes extending the Fresh Air Raise (FAR) to depth, development of a new Return Air Raise (RAR), and the installation of new sensors and ventilation controls throughout the mine. Two years after the completion of #2 Winze, the mine is ramping up its ore production to 1,300 tpd (up from 1,100). To ensure safe and profitable production, a reliance upon technology has been needed to provide the required ventilation to the work areas according to the mine plan. To systematically assess the mine’s ventilation in real-time, a significant increase in remote monitoring was required. This included installing additional flow, pressure, temperature and gas sensors. The first step in upgrading the existing monitoring was to purchase airflow and differential pressure monitors and install them in key areas of the mine. This paper presents the process of expanding the monitoring capability at Hoyle Pond mine, the selected equipment and the results of the implementation. The intended goal was to improve safety while minimizing capital and operation costs. The monitors were installed in strategic locations to provide immediate feedback on the impact of changes to the primary ventilation airflows. Comparing the available sensor technologies, installing them and systematically monitoring the ventilation served as a first step towards developing a mine wide Ventilation Control System. In addition, the initial state of the monitoring and control system, with final results and the chosen solution for the mine site, are presented. INTRODUCTION The Hoyle Pond mine is located in the City of Timmins, within the Porcupine mining district, Ontario, which has produced more than 70 million ounces of gold since 1910. Currently, approximately 60% of Porcupine Gold Mines gold production comes from the Hoyle Pond underground mine. Mechanized cut and fill and long-hole mining methods are used to extract the ore. The remainder of the ore comes from the Hollinger Open Pit mine. The Dome Underground mine ceased operations in 2017. Hoyle Pond is currently mining at 1820 meters below the surface and plans to go deeper. The average dry-bulb as wet-bulb temperature underground varies according to the depth and surface conditions which has extremes of –40°C in winter to +30°C in summer. The total airflow volume pushed down from surface is 240 m3/s to accommodate the diesel-powered equipment needed for normal operations. In order to improve the quality of air underground a program has been implemented to use diesel particulate filters, starting with the truck fleet and 6-yard scoops, followed by the intention to implement the rest of the functional diesel-powered equipment and eventually move to electric equipment."

Orano Mining maintains a significant level of Innovation and Development Research for its sites in Canada, Niger, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and France. This effort is formalized within the six major thematic programs below, which include more than one hundred affiliated R&D projects:  Geological understanding, tools and methods for exploration  ISR technology (geology, modeling, mining development tools)  Mining technology (SABRE)  Ore treatment and processing (in particular via our Centre for Innovation for extractive metallurgy, CIME)  Environment (radiochemistry, modeling, tools and methods for remediation)  Digital Mine (sensors, transmission, database, and data modeling) This paper describes the main actions of these six programs, their stakes, and their progress. There is no single path leading to innovation but fostering an innovative context and a structured project approach are essential ingredients to successful development and industrial deployment. As a result, Orano Mining has, over the years, developed a disciplined methodology for R&D portfolio and project management. This methodology, presented here, targets a reduction in time to implementation while valuing both the expertise and the work in project mode.

The mechanism of hardening in heat-treatable zirconium alloys was foUNd to be analogous to that for titanium alloys. Zirconium containing a relatively large addition of a ß -stabilizing element such as molybdenum or columbium can be hardened by the following transformation: Lean alloys, having insufficient alloy content to retain ß at room temperature are hardened by the following transformation: Application of these findings in Zr-Mo-Sn and Zr-Nb-Sn alloys produced strengths as high as 190,000 psi with reasonable ductility. PRIOR research on zirconium alloys has been concerned with development of greater strengths and creep resistance by solid-solution hardening or by dispersion hardening. Although solution and aging heat treatments had been applied earlier to zirconium alloys, quenching frequently produced low ductility. The possibility that the ß-to-w transformation, discovered earlier in titanium alloys,' might also occur in zirconium alloys and cause low ductility was considered, and, indeed, was found as predicted2 to be the case. In the earliest experiments, the heat-treatment response of titanium, too, was disappointing. However, by avoiding the formation of the embrittling w phase, it became practical to obtain room-temperature strengths higher than 180,000 psi, with elongation values of 10 pct.3 Based on the present concept of titanium heat treatment, the principal requirement for a heat-treatable zirconium alloy is that it contains a certain minimum amount of one or more ß -stabilizing elements. Only molybdenum, columbium, and tantalum, when present in sufficient amounts, are known to stabilize ß zirconium to room temperature during rapid cooling from the ß field. Tantalum was undesirable because of its high thermal-neutron cross section. Aluminum and tin are effective a stabilizers, but aluminum has been shown to seriously decrease the corrosion resistance of simple zirconium alloys in hot water. Therefore, for the present study, tin was used as the stabilizer addition. The alloys selected for this evaluation are presented in Table 1 along with their analyses and ß-transus temperatures. Noise from vibrating screens is generated in two ways: 1) Noise due to the material being processed and, 2) noise from the screen itself. Non-metallic decks had been shown previously to reduce material noise. The noise reduction and change in screening performance was quantified for six non-metallic decks using dolomite, granite and coal as the materials. The non-metallic decks were from 2 to 7 dBA quieter and from -1 to +10 percent less efficient as compared to a steel wire cloth deck of the same open area. Damping of the sidewalls and isolation of the drive mechanisms had been shown, in a development configuration, to reduce the noise of the screen itself. Tests of four prototype damping treatments gave reductions up to 4.9 dBA and the mechanism isolators gave an additional 2.1 dBA. The treatments were successfully life tested in two ways: 1) Lab tests to a simulated 25,000 hours were conducted on samples of the treatments in a corrosive salt spray to simulate coal plant wash water and, 2) the full size treatments were run on a full size screen for 5,000 hours.

"In June 1985, Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) was established. During the past 30 years, various major achievements are made in the discipline of rock mechanics and rock engineering field, especially in the last ten years. This paper will discuss the main rock engineering progress in association with China National Science and Technology Awards, “973 Program”, and “Tan Tjongkie Lecture”. The current status of rock engineering in China and some hot problems are summarized. Furthermore, some suggestions are given for addressing those problems. INTRODUCTIONThe modern concept of rock mechanics and engineering was initiated and developed after the Second World War. In this regard, the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) was established in 1962, subsequently further promotes its development. In June 1985, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering was established. Various chief scientists, including professors Tan Tjangkie, Pan Jiazheng, Sun Jun, Wang Sijing, Qian Qihu, have made their huge efforts to the development of Rock Mechanics and Engineering in terms of the large-scale rock engineering projects in China.The achievements in the last 30 years significantly promote the development of China in different fields, such as energy, transportation, national defense and other national economy and major infrastructure facilities (Wang et al. 2004; Qian 2010, 2011). In other words, these projects also promoted the science and technology progress in rock mechanics and engineering across the world. Reviewing and analyses of the experiences on those key rock projects are beneficial to its technological development. She and Dong (2013), in view of literature statistical analysis, discussed the status and research progress in rock mechanics field associated with the last 30-year China's developments, including the rock strength and deformation theory, rock fracture and damage mechanics, the constitutive relation of rock dynamics, rock field coupling, rock reinforcement and stability analysis, etc. The challenging issues in rock mechanics were also proposed, which are the main concerns in rock engineering practices, engineering exploration, design, construction and operation."

The increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields tias demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure alunlinum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual tools. Comparison oF Cutting Tools Cutting tools commonly used for machining free cutting brass usually have little, if any, top and side rake; they are ground on a medium to coarse abrasive wheel and used without any cutting compound or with a cutting compound that has a paraffin base. Those ordinarily used for steel have some top and side rake, are usually ground on a medium to fine abrasive wheel, and are often used with soluble-oil cutting compounds. The proper tools for aluminum and its alloys should have appreciably more side and top rake than the tools for cutting steel; should have very keen edges obtained by grinding with fine or very fine abrasive wheels supplemented in many cases by hand stoning with an oil-stone; and should be used with suitable cutting compounds whenever possible. In many cases, tools suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys are not appreciably different from tools commonly used for cutting hardwoods. The front clearance of a tool most suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys should be about 6°, the top rake from 30" to 50°, making the total angle of the cutting edge of the tool from 35' to 55". However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual tools. COMPARISON OF CUTTING TOOLS Cutting tools commonly used for machining free cutting brass usually have little, if any, top and side rake; they are ground on a medium to coarse abrasive wheel and used without any cutting compound or with a cutting compound that has a paraffin base. Those ordinarily used for steel have some top and side rake, are usually ground on a medium to fine abrasive wheel, and are often used with soluble-oil cutting compounds. The proper tools for aluminum and its alloys should have appreciably more side and top rake than the tools for cutting steel; should have very keen edges obtained by grinding with fine or very fine abrasive wheels supplemented in many cases by hand stoning with an oil-stone; and should be used with suitable cutting compounds whenever possible. In many cases, tools suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys are not appreciably different from tools commonly used for cutting hardwoods. The front clearance of a tool most suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys should be about 6°, the top rake from 30° to 50°, making the total angle of the cutting edge of the tool from 35° to 55°. Studies have been carried out on the dead roasting of a copper-iron and a copper-nickel-iron sulfide concentrate, followed by segregation roasting with coal and leaching with either curpric sulfate in aqueous acetonitrile or cupric chloride in brine solution to preferentially solubilize copper. The effect of dead roasting and segregation roasting conditions on the overall leaching of copper and the separation of copper from iron and iron and nickel is reported. An excellent separation of copper from iron and a good separation of copper from iron and nickel can be obtained provided sulfur is removed to 0.5 per cent or less during the dead roast and provided the coal addition and temperature of the segregation roast are near the minima required for the segregation of copper.

A mathematical model of the industrial hydrocyclone based on fluid dynamics is a better alternative to the currently existing empirical models. The swirling-flow velocities are determined by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with an appropriate turbulence model. The solution of the momentum-balance equations yields the flow field inside the hydrocyclone which determines the particle trajectories, and subsequently the classification curve. The essence of the model is that the physical dimensions of the hydrocyclone and the slurry characteristics can be incorporated, and the influence of these parameters reflects on the flow predictions. The predicted tangential and axial velocities in a 250-mm hydrocyclone are in good agreement with the laser-Doppler velocimetry measurements. Finally, the predicted classification curves show good agreement with experimental data measured on a KREBS Dl0B hydrocyclone.

The federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal industries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Because of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. The taxes indicated above, therefore, are not final and may conceivably be very materially increased. For 1918, the taxes are expected to be still greater, but no compilations are yet available. Taxes at a high rate are to continue indefinitely. The subject is clearly of gravest import to the mining industry in particular. The Commissioner of Internal Revenue, who is charged by law with the administration and collection of the taxes, is determined that these functions shall be performed in a just and businesslike way. Fairness and finality are to be the chief objectives. In view of the peculiar conditions that attach to the tax program as applied to mines and other wasting industries, like oil, gas, and timber, the Commissioner has resorted to professional advice and assistance by manning a Sub-division of Natural Resources with competent engineers, brought in from the several industries, into whose hands he has placed for solution the technical questions involved. These engineers have a two-fold duty: (1) to devote to the solution of these problems their own knowledge and experience; (2) through their acquaintance with their respective industries, and with the men engaged in those industries, to focus upon these problems, by conferences and otherwise, the best opinion of the country.
