PERHAPS the most widely used dispersants or gangue depressants in nonmetallic flotation are sodium silicates, which vary in silica-to-soda ratio from 1 to 3.75. Typical manufactured silicates in order of decreasing solubility and increasing amounts of silica are Metso, silica-to-soda ratio of 1.00; D, 2.00; RU, 2.40; K, 2.90; N, 3.22; and S-35, 3.75.* References in flotation literature1,2 to the use of sodium silicates are often weak because they fail to mention the type of silicate used. Metso and silicate N have occasionally been mentioned, but when the type of silicate is not mentioned, it is usually assumed to be N, the cheapest of the soluble silicates and the one recommended by sodium silicate manufacturers as a flotation agent. In the All is-Chalmers Research Laboratories a systematic study was made of the effect of different alkali-silica ratios on the concentration by flotation of two scheelite ores. One of these was a high grade ore from the Sang Dong mine in Korea. The effect of such factors as pH; addition agents; and conditioning time, temperature, and pulp density on the flotation efficiency of this ore have been described previously. The other ore was a low grade ore from Getchell Mines Inc., Nevada. The mineralogy and techniques of concentrating this ore have been described by Kunze. Hereafter these ores will be referred to as the Korean and Nevada ores. Experiments were made with both to determine the effect of three factors—-type of silicate, concentration of silicate, and pH of the pulp—on recovery and grade of tungsten in a rougher concentrate. Average WO, content of the Korean ore was 1.50 pct and of the Nevada ore 0.27 pct. The predominant tungsten mineral in both ores was scheelite, which was accompanied by a small amount of powellite. The powellite and scheelite were finely disseminated through both ores and required a —200 mesh grind for liberation. Major gangue minerals in the Korean ore, in decreasing order of abundance, were amphi-boles, quartz, biotite, garnet, fluorite, and calcite. Bulk sulfides composed about 3 pct of the total weight. Gangue in the Nevada ore, in descending order of abundance, was garnet, alpha quartz, calcite, phlogopite, wollastonite, and amphiboles. Sulfide minerals were 3 to 4 pct of total weight. Batch flotation experiments were made with 500-g samples of ore, each sample wet-ground to 90 pct passing 200 mesh. The finely ground ore was floated in a Fagergren batch cell at 25 pct solids. The natural pH of the Nevada ore was 8.9 and of the Korean ore, 8.5. The D, RU, K, N, and S-35 sodium silicates were obtained in colloidal dispersions with varying amounts of water. The most alkaline, Metso, was in dry powdered form. For convenience in addition, 5 pct solutions by weight were prepared from each of the silicates, on the basis of dry sodium silicate dissolved in the correct amount of distilled water. Chemical analyses of the various silicates are given in Table I, together with the pH of the 5 pct solutions. A preliminary bulk sulfide float was made with secondary butyl xanthate as the collector and pine oil as the frother. The WO] analysis of the sulfide concentrate was nearly 1 pct for the Korean ore and about 0.1 pct for the Nevada ore. The tungsten contained in the sulfide concentrate constituted about 3 pct of the total tungsten in each ore. No effort was made to recover these tungsten values. The scheelite was floated with oleic acid. Adjustments in pH were made with sulfuric acid or sodium carbonate. A 1 pct solution of 85 pct Aerosol OT was sprayed on the froth and sides of the cell during the scheelite float to aid in dispersing the minerals and to decrease the entrapment of gangue particles. Six tests were planned for each of the six types of silicate in which concentrations of 1, 2, and 4 1b of silicate per ton of dry ore were investigated at both 6.5 and 10 pH. All tests were made at room temperature. The performance of each silicate was judged from the grade and recovery of WO, in the scheelite rougher concentrate. Tungsten recovery was calculated on the basis of the scheelite remaining in the ore after the preliminary sulfide float. Testing of each silicate at three levels of concentration and two levels of pH required 36 tests with each scheelite ore. Variance analyses were performed on the concentrate grades and recoveries to determine whether or not the type of sodium silicate, the concentration of sodium silicate, or the pH significantly affected recovery or grade. Results Concentrate Grade: A variance analysis of the concentrate grades for the Korean ore showed that concentration of the silicate and pH of the ore pulp were major factors in producing a high grade concentrate. Also, the silica- to-so da ratio was important as an interaction with pH. The concentrate grade vs silica-to-soda ratio is plotted in Fig. 1. Analysis of the helium content of a natural gas presents more than the usual difficulties encountered in applying the thermal--conductivity method because of the relatively small amounts of this inert gas present and the wide variation in the other constituents. However, the numerous advantages of this method and its adaptability to continuously recording and control instruments make it worthy of consideration. A specific application of the method described yields quantitative results only when used with gas mixtures of known qualitative compositions which vary within predetermined limits. Periodic analyses for the helium content of a producing gas well may be conveniently made by an absorption method3/ and a continuous analytical method is not necessary for this purpose. Natural gas containing 1.75 to 1.90 percent of helium produced from Government-owned wells is processed in the Amarillo (Texas) Helium Plant of the Bureau of Mines. The helium extracted in the plant is supplied to the Army and Navy, and the processed natural gas is sold to a commercial gas company4/. As complete recovery of the helium in the raw material is not economically practicable, the processed gas contains 0.1 to 0.3 percent of helium, depending upon conditions of operation;- Production is checked against the helium removed from the gas, which before the installation of the thermal--conductivity apparatus was calculated from the analysis of a cumulative sample of the processed gas. As conditions of operation affect the residual helium content to a large extent, a composite sample was an uncertain index of the efficiency of the process.

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.

LOW and Gensamer' demonstrated a number of years ago that the yield point phenomenon in mild steels was associated with the presence of fer-rite soluble carbon or nitrogen. More recently the yield phenomenon in body-centered-cubic metals containing interstitials was rationalized by Cottrell' in terms of a simple dislocation model. Interstitial atoms interact with dislocations in two ways; they cause not only local expansions but induce local tetragonality in the lattice. Consequently, interstitial~ interact with the hydrostatic tension and shear components of the stress about dislocations. They tend to migrate toward the expanded regions of edge dislocations and to assume sites that relieve the shear stresses of screw dislocations. Thus, a dislocation saturated with solute atoms constitutes a lower free energy state than that obtained when the dislocation threads through the average composition regions of the matrix. A greater stress will be required to separate the dislocation from its atmosphere than to move the dislocation through the matrix. This factor gives rise to the upper yield stress, which is required to unleash a series of dislocations in a localized region. This local yielding is propagated across the specimen to form a thin band of plastically deformed material known as a Lueder's band, making an angle of about 45" to the stress axis. Once the band has formed, deformation continues at the lower yield stress by the spreading of the Lueder's band in the direction of the applied stress. Undoubtedly the spreading of Lueder's bands at the lower yield stress is accomplished by the high stress concentrations at the band fronts, which serve to induce continued unlocking of new dislocations in advance of the migrating band fronts. Cottrell and Bilby have shown that the dependence of the yield point on temperature can be deduced by assuming that thermal fluctuations aid the stress in unlocking small dislocation loops from their solute atmospheres. Once a loop that exceeds a critical size has been nucleated, the entire locked diqlocation is released and can migrate. Fisher4 simplified this analysis by assuming that the locking forces were short range, so that if the dislocation loop were displaced only one Burgers vector from its atmosphere, it would be unlocked. Applying his model to the special case of delayed yielding under a constant stress of the order of the upper yield strength, he demonstrated that the delay time 7 for yielding should depend on stress and temperature according to where A and B are constants, G is the shear modulus, and u and T are the resolved shear stress and absolute temperature, respectively. Cottrell and Bilby, Fisher, and Fisher and Rogers' have shown that the above deductions are at least in qualitative harmony with the experimental facts. A number of investigators5-0 have shown that the yield point phenomenon can also be induced in sub-stitutional alloys of face-centered-cubic metals. In general such yield points are not as pronounced as those encountered in body-centered-cubic metals containing interstitials. The yield point phenomenon in these materials is usually enhanced by prestrain-ing at low temperatures and aging at intermediate temperatures. Undoubtedly the yield point phenomenon induced by strain aging substitutional alloys also results from locking of dislocations. But the locking of dislocations in substitutional alloys of face-centered-cubic metals differs somewhat from interstitial locking of dislocations in body-centered-cubic metals. Substitutional elements in face-centered-cubic lattices cause only radial displacements of the adjacent lattice points. Consequently, only the edge components of dislocations can be locked by the mechanism suggested by Cottrell. Additional locking, however, can be obtained by the Suzuki mcchanism.10 In face-centered-cubic metals, dislocations exhibit lower energies when they are present in the

Even as the rational selection of excavation equipment requires a matching of machine performance capabilities to rock response characteristics, the functional features of transportation systems must be matched to the characteristics of the materials handled in order to secure optimum, trouble-free operation. In particular, ore passes and chutes must be designed for flow in order to insure controlled draw whenever a chute is opened. The alternative to quantitative design is, of course, the well known ad hoc procedure of freeing plugged ore passes, cleaning up spillage from flooded chutes, etc., after installation of the system. Since the voluminous empirical work sporadically undertaken through the years evidently had not led to reliable design methodology, it seemed worthwhile to attempt a rational and complete description of the movement of material through ore passes. The concepts of de- formable body mechanics applicable to gravity-induced flows of granular media or "soils" were involved. Accordingly, the mathematical theory of soil plasticity was adopted as a working hypothesis, and a two-dimensional laboratory model of an ore pass constructed in order to investigate the appropriateness of the theory. The general experimental strategy consisted of formulating the movement of material in ore passes as a boundary value problem in soil plasticity, determining the required boundary values of stress and velocity experimentally, and then using these data for the initiation of a theoretical solution for stress and velocity throughout the moving mass of material. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental constituted the test of the original hypothesis.

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

"Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. L’intervalle le plus court fournissait des données plus étroitement liées à la fonction d’abattage (B) car d’après l’hypothèse avancée, le besoin d’abattage secondaire était moindre. Certains paramètres de la fonction de sélection (S) et de B ont été déterminés ; les paramètres restants ont été estimés à l’aide d’un simulateur de modèle d’équilibre de population. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

A liga AZ91D apresenta 9%pAl e 1%pZn e pode ser submetida a tratamento térmico de solubilização seguido de envelhecimento para melhoria de propriedades mecânicas por meio de precipitação da fase beta-Mg17Al12. Esta fase, porém, pode ter efeitos distintos sobre o comportamento de corrosão da liga. Buscando estudar a influência do tamanho de grão da matriz alfa e a presença de precipitados beta sobre a resistência à corrosão da liga AZ91D, este trabalho utilizou lingotes com estrutura bruta de fusão na obtenção de amostras solubilizadas, laminadas a frio e então envelhecidas, para subsequente análise microestrutural e do comportamento de corrosão. A solubilização ocorreu a 445ºC por 24h e foi efetiva em dissolver quase completamente a fase beta. A laminação levou a uma redução de 20% da espessura das amostras e de 400 para 130 µm o tamanho de grão médio, após envelhecimento. O envelhecimento feito a 200ºC em 2 e 24h permitiu a precipitação de fase beta em maior quantidade e melhor distribuição por contornos de grão em relação às amostras fundidas ou solubilizadas. Ensaios de imersão foram realizados, apontando uma leve queda na taxa média de corrosão quando se lamina a amostra, enquanto as amostras solubilizadas (sem fase beta) mostraram maior susceptibilidade à corrosão. Assim, é possível indicar que o refinamento de grãos é benéfico ao formar uma rede de proteção em ligas de magnésio AZ91D, apesar de introduzir defeitos gerados pela laminação.

The deterioration rate of any metal or alloy is increased in a erosion-corrosion application because the passivated surface layer is removed by the solid particles contained in the pumping fluid and the material surface becomes corrosion active again. Numerous attempts were made to engineer a stainless steel with higher hardness and unaffected corrosion performance. Alloys of special interest in such an area are the duplex stainless steels particularly the CD4MCu material which has the capability of being hardened due to its ferrite-austenite microstructure. Unfortunately, the CD4MCu with higher hardness comprises different intermetallic compounds which will increase the corrosion rate. The paper is analyzing the erosion-corrosion performance of a new type CD4MCu with 32% higher hardness and superior wear performance. The corrosion performance of this new alloy is better than the corrosion performance of the common CD4MCu material which the industry could supply. The corrosion effectiveness was evaluated with the Huey test, the potentio-dynamic anodic polarization test and the weight loss test whereas the erosion resistance was established with a low stress ball-on-disk type apparatus. The Wilfley hard CD4MCu material had 39% lower weight loss and 32% smaller volume loss than the common CD4MCu alloy The hardness range of the centrifugal pump parts poured and processed with the Wilfley hard CD4MCu is 320-350 HBN versus 250-255 HBN hardness of the common CD4MCu. After approximately 18 months of experimentation and field testing it was clearly established that the life time of the Wilfley hard CD4MCu is higher than the common CD4MCu and consequently centrifugal pumps were supplied to different customers in North and South America. An important problem in the efficient conduct of industry is that of helping the individual employee to formulate an attitude toward his work which will result in the reduction of accidents and the promotion of safety. Perhaps nowhere is the need greater for this type of Psychological training of carefully selected men than at oil refineries whore both the raw materials and the finished products are highly inflammable and explosive in nature. However, the refinery organization usually is well adapted to educational safety activities - much more so than in the producing, pipe line, and marketing departments where the personnel are more or less scattered; but the same general principles of conduct hold true in any industrial organization. This problem of directing the attention of the employees to their specific tasks or helping them to control and frequently eliminate hazards engendered by adverse mental attitude or emotion is met most satisfactorily by carefully selecting applicants and placing them at jobs for which their ability, best fits them. The subsequent training of these carefully selected employees to assure their most effective work in accident prevention mu be accomplished in a variety of ways, such as by personal supervision and instruction, inspections, drills, and by the studied use of well thought out safety pamphlets and posters. This procedure is simple in outline and not original in scope, yet the importance of selecting and training the personnel has, not been generally accepted by the petroleum industry until recent years. In 1926, the Bureau of Mines, while making a study of accidents in the petroleum industry, found that medical examinations of prospective employees were not receiving unanimous endorsement by all companies, and the point was stressed that the selection and allocation of employees was a problem requiring serious consideration in the petroleum industry.

Foi estudado o efeito da temperatura no comportamento à corrosão sob tensão do aço inoxidável dúplex AISI 318 em solução contendo 115.000 ppm de cloreto, pH4 a temperatura ambiente e a 70°C. Ensaios de tração com baixa de taxa de deformação foram realizados. Foi avaliada a susceptibilidade do aço inoxidável dúplex AISI 318 à corrosão sob tensão no potencial de circuito aberto e em vários potenciais anódicos e catódicos. Os resultados mostraram que a redução do alongamento variou com o potencial aplicado. Os resultados experimentais mostraram que o aço AISI 318 ficou imune à corrosão sob tensão em potencial entre -750 mVECS e 1.000 mVECS na temperatura ambiente e entre -650 e -100mVECS para a temperatura de 70°C. Em potenciais maiores que o potencial de pite observou-se uma redução drástica no alongamento em ambas as temperaturas. No entanto, quando os potenciais aplicados foram abaixo de -650 mVECS para a temperatura de 70°C e -750mVECS para a temperatura ambiente, houve uma redução no alongamento final até a ruptura, provavelmente através do processo de fragilização por hidrogênio.

This report describes a primary or direct, continuously sampling, and automatically averaging gravimetric method for analyzing gaseous mixtures of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide) hydrogen, and (by volume measurement) nitrogen. The gaseous mixture is analyzed by passing it at a controlled and definite rate through a system that permits carbon dioxide and water retained by appropriate absorbents to be determined and the residual-gas volume (essentially nitrogen) to be measured. The accuracy and dependability have been established by comparison with very carefully conducted Orsat analyses. The method was developed for, and has been satisfactorily applied to, the analysis of blast-furnace top gas. It permits relatively attention free operation, using simple and low-cost materials usually found as basic equipment in the analytical laboratory. It provides, over a wide range of time or sampling intervals (from less than 1 to over 24 hours), the average composition, in terms of volume-percent, for those components usually determined in blast-furnace gas, if (as is usual) the flow rate of gas from the blast furnace is essentially constant over a selected analysis interval. Oxygen and methane are not determined; but, since these gases are normally absent or present only in traces, their analysis is seldom required.

Benchmarking is a business management process that seeks improvement through the study and reapplication of practices conducted by industry leaders. This discussion presents objectives and organization of benchmarking applied to mining geomechanics. Similar procedures have been successfully applied to mining companies, laboratories, and research organizations involved in mining geomechanics throughout the world. Benchmarking is a structured process that allows an organization to learn from the "best" in the field. The objectives of benchmarking vary depending on the company's targeted areas for improvements. Typical goals include ground control cost reduction, enhanced safety, optimization of geotechnical staffing, development of state-of-the-art design procedures, or the adoption of the "best in the field" geotechnical data management. Once the objective of the study is established and the practices and procedures to be benchmarked are identified, a benchmarking team is formed from internal and outside specialists. Benchmarking in geomechanics is fundamentally different than in most other fields because of the effects of local geologic conditions and regulations, both of which must be understood by all on the benchmarking team, before a comparative analysis can be made.

The major obstacle in recycling steelmaking slags to the blast furnace is their phosphorus content. Removal of the phosphorus, which is primarily associated with the silicate and phosphate phases, would allow for greater recycle of these slags for their iron, manganese, and lime contents. Calculations show that separation of the silicates from the oxide phases would remove nearly 90% of the phosphorus from the slag. The variable grain size of the as-received slag made liberation by fine grinding difficult. Therefore, slow-cooling experiments were undertaken to improve the grain size distribution. The grain size distributions were determined using in-situ image analysis. The samples were ground to their apparent liberation size and high gradient magnetic separation was used to separate the magnetic oxides from the nonmagnetic silicates and phosphates. Liberation analysis and modeling was performed on selected separation products for discussion of benefication characteristics.

Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

Relax: the world today is not running short of many mineral commodities, even though prices are spiraling upward. Einstein?s observation still holds true that everything is still relative, as long as one can pass on the incremental costs of production to the consumer. However, a strong consensus exists among many of the companies comprising the minerals processing industry that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the easy-to-mine, high-quality resources that make juicy profit margins, which shareholders like. For the most part, the resource cherries have all been picked, and established mineral processing companies that are exhausting their reserves, or in the process of looking to add reserves so as to create longevity for their company, have no recourse but to look long and hard at what were once considered the dregs of the earth. Even end users, such as steel companies, are now looking to become ?miners,? to establish captive iron ore resources. Owning a captive resource facilitates a dependable supply of feed materials, which translates into effective cost control and a guarantee for a thriving sustainable business in the future.

Electrical conductavity and therrnoelectvic nzeasuretnents on synthetic hematite slabs with 0.01 to 0.90 at. pet Ti and with 0.30 at. pet Ca were made. Additions of titanium and of calcium both increased the electronic conductivity with titanium yielding greater n-type behavior and calciurn p-type behavior. Reduction studies of hematite to magnetite in CO-CO2 atmospheres between 600° and 900°C initially exhibited linear kinetics. These linear rates were increased by additions of titanium and decreased by calcium. IN recent years many studies have been reported in the literature on the kinetics of the reduction of hematite and magnetite to iron. In addition, Hansen and Josephl and Schenck and Schultz2 have reported studies on the reduction of hematite to magnetite, the first step in total reduction to iron. In order to evaluate the results of the studies of over-all reduction in terms of the actual mechanism of the reaction and to define further the important factors in the rate- controlling mechanism of the magnetic roasting reaction, the following experiments were undertaken. Specimens of undoped hematite and hematite containing titanium or calcium in solution as doping agents were reduced to magnetite in CO-CO2 mixtures. In addition, electrical-conductivity measurements were correlated with the reduction kinetics using concepts of defect solid-state chemistry. EXPERIMENTAL Fisher certified Fe2O3 powder was used to make specimens for both the electrical and kinetic studies (see Table I for analysis). Doping with titanium and calcium was accomplished by adding TiO2 and CaO powders to the Fe2O3 powder. The powders were mixed in a Waring blender for minimum times of 1/2 hr. Satisfactory blending was achieved based on comparison of analyses of individual specimens af- ter reduction. The specimens were formed in a steel die using opposed punches with a rectangular opening 10.0 by 40.0 mm. The Fe2O3-TiO, platelets were pressed cold at 16,000 psi. They were sintered for approximately 16 hr at 1075°C in air, in accordance with information in the literature3, 4 on the time and temperature needed to obtain solution of the titanium in the hematite. The Fe2O3-CaO mixtures were first cold-pressed at 20,000 psi and sintered for 3 hr at 1225°C to insure solution of CaO. This material was then ground to -325 mesh in a 6-in. ball mill and the resulting powder was used to make platelets in the same manner as above. The sintered platelets were usually between 1/16 and 1/8 in. thick. They were ground on a carborundum wheel and polished on 2/0 paper. Typical dimensions of the kinetic-study specimens were 1.6 by 0.8 by 0.05 cm, and a typical weight was 0.3 g. Conductivity and thermoelectric specimens were approximately the same size, but were subjected to further sintering in order to ensure maximum densification. Finally, all specimens were measured to the nearest 0.0005 in. and weighed on a Mettler H-15 balance to the nearest 0.0001 g and the density calculated. The average density of the specimens used for the reduction studies was 4.87 g per cc, or 7.1 pet total porosity. The standard deviation ranged from 0.14 to 0.063 g per cc within a composition group. In the present study, the apparent surface area as measured with a micrometer was taken as the true surface area. The chemical analyses for calcium and for titanium within a group showed maximum variations of 50.04 pet from the average values used in Figs. 9 and 11.
