The kinetics of gold-bromide loading onto activated carbon has been investigated in a batch stirred reactor. The amount of gold adsorbed by the carbon was correlated with time based on a second-order equation. The rate constant for gold-bromide species onto activated carbon ranged from 0.27 to 1.2 x 10-3 (kg/t)-l(min)-l from a solution containing 25 ppm of Au, with 0.8 g carbon per liter of solution at 30° C. The equilibrium saturation capacity (Q.) was 36±3.0 kg/t from the same system. The rate of loading increased with decreasing particle size, decreasing pH, increasing temperature, and decreasing concentration of gold in solution. The calculated activation energy E. was 8.8 kcal/mole, significantly higher than those reported for physical adsorption. The equilibrium saturation capacity (Q.) increased with increasing concentration of gold in solution, but was independent of other variables such as temperature, agitation speed, particle size and pH. These rate constants and equilibrium saturation capacity for the gold-bromide species are higher than those reported for the gold-cyanide systems.

Phosphorus slag is one of the most large-tonnage of yellow phosphorus production waste, which for decades stored in the slag disposal, by polluting the environment and creating environmental problems in the regions. Phosphorus slags from the processing of Karatau phosphorites are a very promising source of raw materials not only for silicon compounds but also rare earth metals (REM). Among the REM, yttrium, neodymium, europium and lutetium predominate, which are relevant to high-tech industries. The report presents technological scheme of complex processing of slags of phosphoric production with obtaining of REM concentrate and precipitated silicon dioxide ("white soot"). The regime parameters of the main operations of the technology are determined: I stage- leaching of slag with nitric acid solution; extraction of the REM-containing solution with tributyl phosphate and stripping of the REM with water; settling of solution of salts of oxalic acid, calcining the precipitate to obtain a concentrate S REM oxides and II stage of leaching silicon cake to obtain "white soot". Recovery of S REM from slags of phosphoric production on various redistribution has made, %: leaching – 95.0; extraction - 90.2; extraction on the average ~ 93.2; the production of a concentrate of REM oxide is 93.9. A concentrate containing 17.3 % of REM oxides was obtained. According to X-ray analysis it contains the following phases: calcium oxide, portlandite2, gadolinium oxide and yttrium, gadolinium oxide, gadolinium oxide and cerium, neodymium oxide, neodymium oxide and cerium. Thus, the concentrate can serve as a raw material for the production of individual rare-earth metals like gadolinium, cerium, yttrium and neodymium. After performing the II stage of leaching siliceous cake with nitric acid the samples of "white soot" were obtained. Its chemical composition corresponds to the state standard and has a specific surface area equal to 180 - 200 m2/g. The technology has been tested in a large-scale laboratory scale and will solve the problem of complex processing of phosphorus raw materials and import substitution in Kazakhstan. The end-to-end recovery of S REM oxides and silicon into concentrate and product from their initial content in slags is ~ 75.0 and 98.0 %, respectively.

"Aerosol processing of materials such as (i) gas-to-particle conversion process (e.g., Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method) and (ii) liquid (or droplet)-to-particle conversion process (e.g., spray pyrolysis) has become of major interest to produce novel submicron- or nanometer-sized particulate material used in electronic and chemical industries. After reviewing recent theoretical and experimental researches on the evaluation of properties and morphology of fine particles by the CVD and spray pyrolysis methods, the importance of the process engineering approach· for aerosol processing of materials and the use of advanced aerosol measurement technology have been pointed out.IntroductionMaterial synthesis via aerosol processing offers a route to producing nanometer-sized and submicrometer-sized particles of high purity with specifically tailored chemical and physical properties. Especially, single nanometer-sized particles (nanoparticle materials) are considered to play an important role in the synthesis of nanostructured materials as well as in nanotechnology in 21st century due to their quantum effect and so on.However, the transformation of gaseous or liquid precursors to the final functional particulate matters consists of various complex chemical and physical processes. In order to control the size distribution and morphology of produced particles, it is important to analyze and model various phenomena, such as gas-phase or liquid-phase chemical reaction, nucleation, condensation, agglomeration and sintering that occur simultaneously in aerosol material processing. By introducing the Aerosol Science and Materials Science, the authors have been trying to model the changes in particle properties and morphology by gas-to-particle conversion and droplet-to-particle conversion processes. The authors have also been trying to obtain the experimental data on the particles properties as accurate as possible."

A hydrometallurgical process has been tested at the Sherritt Research Centre for separation of zinc, lead, copper and precious metal values from the zinc oxide fume leach residue stockpiled at the HBM&S operations in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Zinc is found primarily as zinc femte and sphalerite in the residue, lead as lead sulphate and jarosite, and copper as sulphide and jarositic compounds. Gypsum and siliceous gangue are significant diluents. The separation process includes hot acid, atmospheric and reducing (sulphur dioxide) leaching; zinc, copper and lead flotation; and atmospheric iron removal steps. Zinc is recovered to a high strength zinc sulphate solution and to a zinc sulphide concentrate suitable for feed to a roaster or to a zinc pressure leach plant; lead to a high grade lead sulphate concentrate suitable for feed to a lead smelter, and copper to a high grade copper sulphide concentrate suitable for feed to a copper smelter. Precious metals are divided between the zinc, lead and copper concentrates.

"INTRODUCTION Peoples’ and operators’ safety in construction are tightly linked to the engineering choices, as much as the necessity of reducing time and costs of realization. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to address them properly from the earliest stage of the design, identifying the risks connected to the work and the variability of such during the different phases of the project. Risk is often measured as the expected value of an undesirable outcome. Regarding to occupational safety and health, the risk is the likelihood that a person may be harmed of suffers adverse health effects if exposed to a hazard. This combines the probabilities of various possible events and the assessment of the corresponding harm into a single value. However, the actual occurrences are often more complex than a single binary possibility case. In a real case scenario, with several possible accidents, the total risk is the sum of the risks for each different accident, provided that the outcomes are comparable. The semi-automatic tunnel support system along with its erector machine proved to be a solution with improved structural performance, able to reduce the time and yet to deliver an enhanced, quality-aware and safer working environment for the operators. The implementation of the system provides the engineers, the contractors and the owners with an effective alternative option shortlisted in 2015 for the ITA Award for the Safety Innovation of the Year. In a market industry driven by safety and time constrains the efficiency shall be the ultimate goal, in order to provide solutions able to negotiate with the most challenging ground conditions. In this paper, the authors describe the recent developments on regard of this whole new tunnel support system, including design approach and presenting related case histories OFFSETTING THE RISKS Considering the above factors, from the manufacturers’ point of view, an effective way to limit the construction risks is to focus on the material and technological characteristics, their application and the risks related to them including any residual risks. Finally addressing the construction needs also involves time and cost-effective solutions. The path to follow is an integrated approach where the efficient management of the risk is supported by a flexible, user-friendly, and time effective product that is able to provide a safe, reliable and viable solution to address the construction requirements. Therefore, in a market sector driven by safety and time constraints, the efficiency is a key goal, in order to avoid redundancy and yet to deliver a safe working environment able to meet the construction schedule. The safety of all the parties involved is given by stable working conditions, either for the workers, or the operators and eventually the public. Therefore, the solutions provided should ‘strengthen’ the overall condition and such “to limit or to reduce the deformations within acceptable designed limits and to prevent [the tunnel] to collapse” [1: Clause 207.1.4]."

Due to complex mineralogical and chemical interactions of the value and gangue mineral phases present in uranium-containing lateritic ores, deleterious pulp gelation which impacts on value metal recovery sometimes occur during atmospheric leaching. In this study, the leaching behavior and particle interactions of selected oxide (hematite, quartz) and clay minerals (muscovite, chlorite), which constitute predominant host gangue phases of typical lateritic uranium ores are investigated to provide basic, mechanistic understanding of temporal pulp gelation phenomenon. Isothermal, batch leaching with H2SO4 was carried out on concentrated dispersions (30 ? 57 wt.%) of single minerals at pH 1 and 25 or 70 °C and their concomitant solution, speciation and rheology (shear yield stress, viscosity) were characterized. It is clearly shown that despite the high oxide content of lateritic ores, the pulp chemistry and rheology is largely affected by the incongruent leaching behavior of more reactive, acid-consuming aluminosilicate clays. Furthermore, time- and temperature-dependent alumino-silicate species polycondensation interfacial reactions are shown to be responsible for the enhanced particle interactions, reflecting strong pulp rheology in agitation and pumping. If not properly mitigated, high pulp shear yield stress and viscosity have a striking impact on processability and hence, value metal recovery.

The volume of gas in storage reservoirs may be compuled from estimates of hydrocarbon pore volume and gas density. However, both are dificult 10 estimate accurrately. Further, no adequate method has been presented for estimating reservoir performance during operation for Volumetric gas-storage reservoirs. Normally, gas-storage reservoirs exhibit small pressure gradients in the area conr(zilliitg the storage wells, even under conditions of maximum injection or withdrawal. A zone of low permeability usally surrounds, and is in communication with, tile permeable zone which causes the storage reservoir to exhibit a definite pressure lag, as evidenced by lack of pressure stabilization after extended periods of shut-in. An analysis is presented for determining pore volume and gas in place, and for predicting future reservoir behavior of such reservoirs. The mathematical development is presented and a solution is shown for an operating storage reservoir. INTRODUCTION Depleted gas reservoirs arc often used for gas storage. The reservoir usually contains a permeable area in which numerous storage wells arc located. The permeable zone permits high deliverability and injectivity with relatively small pressure loss. However, pressure equilibrium may not be attained even after long periods of shut-in because of the fact that the permeable zone is in communication with an adjacent tight section. Most of these gas-storage reservoirs are sand lenses, such as ancient beaches or offshore bars. The areal geometry of these reservoirs is normally such that flow in the tight zone will be approximately linear, and the solutions presented here should apply. DISCUSSION For purposes of this paper, a gas-storage reservoir is considered to consist of a volume of permeable rock in communication with tight rock, all of which is surrounded by an impermeable barrier. Pressure gradients across the permeable zone are small due to low flow resistance and well density. Hence, the permeable zone is considered to be at a uniform pressure which is only a function of time as gas is injected or withdrawn. The tight zone is considered to be linear with uniform permeability and porosity, and the pressure in the tight zone is a function of both position and time. l'wo solutions for flow in this system are used to define the reservoir and determine its properties. The first solution is for an infinite linear tight zone in communication with the permeable zone. The expression for constant gas-withdrawal rate is Eqs. I and 2 ore superposed to account for varying rates of production or injection and are used to fit gas-storage field reservoir history. The solution for the infinite case, Eq. 1, is first applied to field data for early times following a shut-in period. Constants BDa and c are ohtained by a least-squares fit of pressure and rate data. After the pressure wave from gas injection or withdrawal reaches the external boundary of the tight zone, the infinite solution will no longer apply and pressure behavior should be more nearly represented by Eq. 2 for a gas reservoir in communication with a finite linear tight zone. The values of the constants found from curve-fitting Eq. 1 to the early time data may then be used in Eq. 2 that only the coefficient- L containing the unknown

Bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals is a familiar and commercially available process to enhance gold recovery with problem ores. Pintail Systems, a Colorado, USA based company had developed bio-processes for gold recovery based on natural mineral formation and transformation in a global mineral cycle. The biological recovery of precious metals from ore involves a number of mechanisms that are dependent on the metal-mineralogical association. These processes include: partial bio-oxidation of sulfide ores; oxidation of gangue minerals exposing gold to leaching; surfactant properties of bacteria/nutrient solutions that improve wettability of ores and solution contact with leachable gold and silver; and microbial production and excretion of trace amounts of gold lixiviants, and bio-fracturing or biological alteration of ore minerals. Pintail has demonstrated enhanced recovery of precious metals during cyanide detoxification of spent heaps at the end of mine life. Biological recovery processes also have the potential to be applied to in situ mining technologies. The in situ process application could recover gold from subgrade deposits, small deposits or those ore bodies with uneconomic stripping ratios for conventional mining. In situ biomining can be accomplished at a fraction of the cost of conventional mining and leaching and does not have the environmental liabilities associated with many conventional gold lixiviants.

Open pit mines are getting deeper with time and transportation expenses are increasing because of the increasing haulage distance. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is getting popular in deeper open pit mines as a suitable alternative to truck haulage because it offers a lower operating cost due to shorter haulage distance and less truck requirement. Semi-mobile in-pit crusher, currently the most popular IPCC system, is relocated every two to five years and the short-term plan needs to be updated accordingly. Short-term planning with IPCC is an area of research that has not been explored extensively yet and hardly any model can generate short-term extraction sequence considering an IPCC in place. This research work proposes a mixed integer programming model to generate short-term production plan within a time horizon of 12 months. The objective of the model is to optimally allocate shovels to minimize cost of material handling and maximize revenue subject to meeting plant requirement, maximum allowable tonnage variation and IPCC location constraints to achieve production and NPV targets set by strategic plan. The proposed model has been implemented in a hypothetical case study for verification. The comparison of results between scenarios with and without IPCC is expected to justify the use of IPCC in large open pit mines from a short to medium term perspective. A semi-mobile IPCC system with one relocation is considered in the case study.

In this context, a mathematical formulation is proposed to incorporate mining width constraints into the production scheduling process, aiming to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the schedule while ensuring enough room for the operation of mining equipment.

The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions has been studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was also developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a mixed mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion, but the film diffusion had a major contribution to the overall rate. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.

With the advancement of industrial science and technology, more and more catalysts are used. The spent catalysts produced are solid waste products, which cause environmental pollution if they are not treated. At the same time, the spent catalysts contain some precious metals such as platinum in concentrations that are often higher than in their ore resources. Therefore, the recovery of valuable metals in spent catalysts is a hot research topic at present. However, due to the complex structure of the spent catalysts, dealing with them is a lengthy process. The first step of recovery, enrichment of the spent catalyst, becomes particularly important. In this paper, a pressure solution method is investigated for this purpose, in which the alumina carrier is dissolved and platinum is enriched in the leaching residue.

Zinc bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as EAF dust, Waelz oxides, galvanizing ashes, zinc & brass foundry fumes and converter fumes are little attractive, both technically and economically for processing in ISF plant or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolysis works. The Ezinexm Process allows for the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form, from these materials, regenerating the leaching liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarizes the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroamrnino complex, allows for the recovery of other valued metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver, these being recovered as a metallic cement consequently improving the economics of the process.

A rapid recovery/recycling process was introduced utilizing the surface-chemical properties of finely dispersed mercury and alumina (Al2O3) fibers in aqueous environment. The conventional method of amalgamation or .ball milling. involves the mixing of a substantial amount of mercury to collect free gold during the grinding stage. In effect, a portion of the mercury is transformed into minute droplets that readily float and disperse in the amalgamation effluent. The fine droplets of mercury in the dispersion readily attached onto the positively charged macroscopic alumina fibers (i.e. = pH 9.8) at conditions pH 3 to 10. When an effluent from settling procedure after an amalgamation-grinding stage is passed through a column-bed packed with alumina fibers, maximum collection of negatively charged finely dispersed mercury occurred at pH 3 to 6. The collection/attachment efficiency was 99.5%. The collected droplets of mercury, which are left in the column-bed of alumina fibers, were subsequently rinsed with alkaline solution at pH 10 to 11.5. At these conditions, both mercury and alumina fibers carry negative surface potentials and resulted in the partial detachment of mercury from the alumina fibers. The detachment efficiency was only 30-35%. The attachment/detachment mechanisms in this study were analyzed using the DLVO theory.

"Movement of mill charge in the centrifugal mill is essentially different from that in the vibration mill with circular path despite the apparently similar mode in the motion of mill body. As proved e.g. in [11], this results in substantial advantage regarding the comminution intensity of the centrifugal mill over the conventional vibration mill accounting approximately to one order of magnitude.Back in 1983, Bradley et al. presented a model of the centrifugal mill based on the kinetics of the mill charge by regarding it as a lumped mass. On the other hand, numerical modeling by ‘discrete element method (DEM)’ enabled us to observe the movement of each ball in the centrifugal mill with an extremely minute time intervals (Inoue et al., XX IMPC in 1997). The former approach rendered simple, even though approximate, expression of the mill behavior, while the latter method was advantageous in describing the behavior of the mill in terms of individual events taking place in the mill body, even though the result did not reduce to a simple expression. The characteristics of the centrifugal mill described by both these approaches proved to be in a degree of agreement. Thus, the kinetic approach was capable of presenting the overall view of the mill, while the DEM model was informative of the details that could not be depicted well enough by the simple math expressions."

As the world progresses toward the renewable energy transition, the demand for minerals increases exponentially. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2021 Net Zero by 2050 Report, critical mineral production needs to grow six times to combat climate change. It’s estimated that four to seven percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the mining sector’s Scope 1 and 2 (direct and indirect) emissions. Including Scope 3 (upstream, downstream, and embedded) emissions, the sector accounts for 28% of global GHG emissions. In a typical mining operation, diesel fuel is the biggest source of direct GHG emissions, and haulage is often the main source of diesel emissions. Large haul trucks have been the industry standard for over 50 years and offer flexibility, relatively low capital cost (especially with equipment lease options), and guaranteed technology with known maintenance. The challenge will be to justify their continued use when there are more economical options that lead to significant reductions in GHG emissions. The purpose of this study is to compare five haulage options in terms of GHG emissions, using the methodology defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scopes 1, 2, and 3 (Category 2). Additionally, this analysis compares operating and capital costs associated with the five haulage options (emerging and proven technologies): 1) Diesel-Electric Haul Trucks, 2) Battery-Electric Haul Trucks, 3) Fuel Cell Haul Trucks, 4) Railveyor, and 5) Conveyor. This analysis looks at the emissions and costs associated with operating the equipment (fuel and electricity), the embedded emissions and costs associated with the construction and installation of the equipment itself, and the associated infrastructure (roads, powerlines, and rail).

It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America's Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

Industrial minerals are critical to most aspects of modern society. They are pervasive in both industry and in everyone's lives (McVey, 1989; Barsotti, 1993). They are also the dominant class of minerals produced in the United States but this fact is little known outside the industry. For example, in 1993 (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, table 1) industrial mineral dollar value was double that of metals ($20.86 billion vs. $10.88 billion) and employment levels were nearly so (74,000 vs. 40,000). A further difference is that transportation tends to dominate production costs (FOB end user) whereas they are much less significant in other mining ventures or other industries. Finally, metal mines are more concentrated west of the Mississippi; industrial mineral operations are more prevalent to the east (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, p. 16-17). The significance of transport cost is discussed in Part 2, which is essentially Barker and Austin, 1995. Part 1 will update and expand portions of Barker and Austin (1995) and provide a more detailed discussion of import/export relationships using a China/United States reference point because of China's dramatic influence on some industrial mineral markets since the mid-1980s (barite, etc.).
