Despite the wide interest in titanium and its compounds, no heat and free-energy-of-formation values for titanates (that is, compounds formed from titania and other metal oxides) have been available heretofore except for ilmenite (FeTi03). Such data are needed for understanding and developing processes for producing titania and titanium tetrachloride from ores (and possibly slags) and in connection with ceramic usage of titania. This paper reports experimental measurements of the heats of formation at ordinary temperature of 11 titanates-ilmenite, perovskite, barium metatinate, strontium metatitanate, barium-strontium metatitanate, barium orthotitanate, strontium orthotitanate, barium-strontium othotitanate, geikielite, magnesium-titanium spinel, and magnesium dititanate. The experimental method was solution calorimetry. The solution calorimeter was operated at 73.7°C. and used a strong hydrofluoric-hydrochloric acid mixture as the calorimetric fluid and reaction medium.

This paper discusses research carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL) in the field of discrete-event simulation of mine equipment systems and reliability assessment of these machinery using genetic algorithms. The AutoMod simulation package, from Brooks-PRI Automation Inc., is used in this research. It is a 3-D discrete-event simulation/animation software tool for creating realistic depictions of manufacturing and materials handling systems. Discrete-event simulation involves modeling of real-life systems based on variables and events which occur or change at distinct points in time. In our case, a two level, multi-drift sublevel stoping model was created in AutoMod for the simulation of the equipment fleet employed in the development cycle (drilling, explosives loading, blasting, materials hauling, ground support) of a typical underground mine in the nickel mining region of Sudbury in Ontario, Canada. The equipment primarily considered in the simulation is Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) vehicles (scooptrams), drills, explosives-loaders and roof bolters. The purpose of the simulation study is to assess the impact of equipment failures to mine?s production throughput. In more detail, using Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) data of scooptrams derived from a reliability assessment model based on genetic algorithms, LHD failures are incorporated into the simulation model. These failures cause production interruptions to the development cycle and consequently loss of hauling capacity. This paper will indicate the significance of equipment failures to a mine?s production and suggest a methodology based on the combination of discrete-event simulation and a predictive reliability assessment model using genetic algorithms for the study and analysis of mine equipment systems.

In the present work, the flotation behaviours of zircon, rutile and ilmenite using sodium oleate as collector in absence and presence of depressants were thoroughly investigated. The maximum in the flotation recovery of any of the above minerals falls within similar pH ranges. A range of inorganic and polymer depressants were examined in order to improve the separation of zircon from rutile and ilmenite. Optimum values of conditioning pH and depressant concentration to achieve maximum recovery and best selective floatability of zircon were obtained. Selective flotation of zircon from Ti-bearing minerals was anticipated from single mineral experiments under different pH values, depressant and collector conditions.

All of these elements are eliminated to some degree in the subsequent roasting, smelting and converting operations.Information on the elimination of impurities during the smelting of copper is surprisingly meagre, however, rather more information is available on impurity removal during the smelting of the ore in reverberatory or blast furnaces."

The drive to reduce water usage globally has led to the mining industry reassessing its water usage - owing to past environmental degradation due to effluent discharge, tailings disposal and process water seepage into the water-table (Haggard et al., 2015). Factors such as water scarcity and environmental restrictions have created the necessity for recycling of process water in mining and other industries. Water recycling, however, causes an accumulation of ions in the process water, which may affect the strength of reagent action on the target mineral and in turn critical aspects of flotation may be impacted. Prior studies have shown that certain ions have specific effects on flotation: for example, calcium and copper have been found to enhance the adsorption of depressant onto gangue (Feng et al., 2013, Wang et al., 2016). Calcium and sulfate ions have been seen to give a higher concentrate grade than other ions present in process water (Manono et al., 2012). An increase in ion concentration will increase the mineral grade due to a decrease in entrainment (Corin et al., 2011). In recent times, smelter off gases treatment plants have become more efficient and environmentally friendly. Where in the past it was acceptable to process only high strength, treatable furnace gases, new smelters must now treat primary gases and abate dust and SO2 from secondary gases: Processing smelter gases can present some interesting challenges. Some equipment can see varying concentrations of sulfuric acid, up to the boiling point, with a periodic table of contaminates thrown in for good measure. Treating weaker secondary gases have, in the past, been cost prohibitive. Nowadays, new technology, like physical absorption or catalytic carbon, show promise for economically treating low strength secondary gases. Modem smelters do a much better job of treating the SO2 laden gases generated by the smelting process but significant challenges remain.

In order to meet federal air pollution guidelines, it is necessary to remove a considerable quantity of sulfur from many North American coals. This may be accomplished by oxidizing the sulfur to water soluble forms, followed by washing the coal. Selective oxidation of the various sulfur forms can be accomplished through the use of a variety of types of bacteria. In this paper, the various bacteria and their requirements are described, and processes using bacteria to remove coal sulfur are discussed.

The behavior of cobalt as a by-product in the NilCu smelting and converting processes effects directly the quality of the final products as well as the revenues gained from the overall process. An effective way to evaluate and predict this important behavior is thermodynamic modeling which reduces the time and the cost of experimental investigation. In this work a thermodynamic model of cobalt-containing matte phase in NilCu smelting and converting processes is presented. The model predicts a priori the thermodynamic properties and phase relations of the ternary and multicomponent matte based solely upon the optimized parameters of the binary systems. This model can be used with other models such as those of slag, metal, gas etc. to predict various aspects of cobalt behavior such as matte- slag, metal-slag distribution, etc.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

"Single-roll strip casting process is studied using computational fluid dynamics which takes into account fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification. The computational model is based on the conservation Jaws of momentum, energy and continuity. Correlation of strip thickness, solidification zone length, and puddle shape on single-roll strip casting of Al-1 %Mn is explored. Feeding pressure and roll speed are investigated. The results show that the··strip thickness slightly increases with pressure, similarly the length of solidification zone. The variations of strip thickness and solidification zone length with roll speed show a sharp decline for strip thickness and slight decline for the length of solidification zone with increasing roll speed. The constraint and free-jet flow have different feature in term of flow field. Severe turbulence is observed on the free-jet flow.IntroductionThe near-net shape casting of strip metals is a demand nowadays. The demand is particularly stimulated by the challenge to become more competitive through enhanced performance. The improvement in the existing processes and new innovative technologies are introduced by the metal industry to gain better product quality, more efficiency in energy consumption, low throughput, yield and operating costs [1-3].There are many advantages that can be obtained by the direct casting of strip. The most prominence is the elimination of hot rolling. Beside that the high rate of heat extraction associated with strip casting offers the possibility of a finer, Jess segregated cast structure. The microstructure will result in the improvement of mechanical properties compared to conventional material, or alternatively the opportunity of using grades of metal outside the normal range for continuous casting.The concept of single-roll strip casting has been difficult to commercialize, because of the complex interactions between fluid flow, solidification, shrinkage, and stress, which lead to serious quality problems. Besides that, the quality and the thickness of the strip are affected by the thermal properties of the strip, roll cooling conditions, roll geometry, and other process parameters. To understand how these parameters affect the strip formation, some researchers have modeled the process [4]."

The application of high power microwave energy to secondary crusher products has been shown to induce micro fractures and cracks in the ore. This suggests that heap leaching could benefit from microwave-induced fractures, as the extent and kinetics of heap leaching processes depend on the accessibility of grains to lixiviants, which can potentially be improved through microwave treatment. The density and pattern of microwave induced cracks and how these cracks subsequently affect heap leaching recovery has not yet been investigated. The objective of this study was to apply X-ray micro computed tomography (X-ray CT) to investigate microwave induced cracks in large cone and HPGR crushed sphalerite particles within 3D space. The ore particles were microwave treated in a single mode microwave applicator coupled to a switched mode power supply and a water cooled microwave transmission sub system operating at 2.45 GHz. The ore particles were treated at specific absorbed microwave heating energies of between 2 and 3kWh/t by treating at 6 kW of forward power for treatment times of 1 s. X-ray tomography analysis was conducted on fine (-5+4.75) mm, medium (-16+9.5) mm, and large (-25+19) mm sphalerite particles before and after microwave treatment at voxel resolutions of 5 µm, 15 µm and 25 µm respectively. Image segmentation, thresholding and spatial registration techniques were used to study crack patterns in 3D images of HPGR and cone crushed particles. Analysis of the X-ray CT images after microwave treatment shows considerable micro crack formation within the Cone and HPGR crushed particles. The cracks pattern showed interphase cracks propagating across all phases, with no evidence of preferential cracking. A greater density of microwave induced cracks was observed on fine (-5+4.75) mm particles compared to the medium (-16+9.5) mm and (-25+19) mm large particles. The results showed overall increased particle porosity following microwave treatment.

The objective of this research was to devise and test an apparatus to rapidly evaluate the cohesive and frictional strength of coal in situ, in order to increase the safety and percentage of coal recovery from underground coal mines. During the first year device was designed utilizing the bore-hole shear test principle from soil shear strength testing: Two opposing corrugated plates are forced outward to exert a controlled contact pressure against the sides of a previously bared hole, and then the plates are very slowly pulled along the axis of the hole to cause shearing of coal in contact with the plates. Results with the device are expressed in terms of a friction angle[_] and a cohesion c. The [ ] angles obtained from an Iowa coal arc in close agreement with and fall between results from triaxial and direct shear laboratory tests on the same coal. The measured cohesion was found to be much less than from the comparable laboratory tests. It may be increased by pre-stressing and other techniques to embed the shear plate teeth for the first shear test point.

The emerging marine minerals exploration and mining industry is currently focused mainly on the technical elements for its success such as developing exploration and mining technologies. However, in one sense, the technical challenges are quite soluble whereas those arising in the fields of the environment and public opinion could present this new generation of miners with problems that are far more difficult to overcome. One need only look at the issues currently faced by mining projects on land to see how powerful the new forces of so-called ?civil society? are in stopping mineral developments in many countries. From the geographic viewpoint, there are many countries but there is just one ocean, so the impacts experienced by any one operation are likely to have pervasive repercussions throughout the industry. A well-oiled NGO development protest lobby will see leverage in resisting this new industry and will seize on the single-ocean angle. The Australian Minerals Industry has established a voluntary Code for Environmental Management that provides an active and valuable model for satisfying the ?court of public opinion? and in delivering economic results to industry that are in current jargon, sustainable. An explanation of the Code for Environmental Management, and the reasons behind 44 companies representing more than 300 operations and 85% of Australia?s sizeable mineral production being signatory to it will be given. Participants see it as a means to future shareholder wealth.

Aluminum is produced by the Hall-Héroult process, which involves passing a current through a molten mixture of alumina dissolved in cryolite (Na3AlF6) to reduce the alumina to aluminum. This process occurs in an electrolytic cell comprising a steel shell lined with a carbon cathode and refractory bricks. After a certain period of operation, the carbon cathode deteriorates and is removed from the cell along with the refractory bricks. These removed materials are referred to as spent pot lining or ?SPL?. Typically, 30 Kg of SPL waste is generated for every ton of Aluminum produced. Globally aluminum smelters produce more than 500,000 tons of SPL each year. Even though SPL has a high fuel value (8000 to 9000 BTU/lb) and contains valuable metals, it is classified as a hazardous material due to its cyanide content and leachable fluorides. Various disposal/recycle techniques have been developed over the years for SPL but none of them is satisfactory. Thus, large quantities of SPL are still being dumped in landfills. In some countries, even the land filling of SPL is not permitted. The safe disposal of SPL thus remains a challenging problem to the aluminum industry and the search continues to find methods of converting SPL into a non-hazardous waste and/or recovering the valuable materials contained in the SPL. We have developed a process to produce hydraulic setting cements (eco-cement) containing a novel fluoride rich cementitious phase, from SPL by an energy efficient, low temperature clinkering route. A raw mix blend of SPL, lime/limestone, calcium sulfate and tailings sands based on a set of design criteria developed by us, is clinkered in a two stage process; 2 hours soak at 800 °C followed by clinkering at 1000 °C for another 2 hours, to produce a soft clinker. The SPL eco-cement is made by grinding the clinker to a fineness of 5000 cm2/g Blaine with 1% by weight borax as a set retarder. A good quality cement having as high as 20 % by weight of SPL in the raw mix (28 % by weight in the cement clinker) is thus produced. The physical properties of the SPL cements are found to be comparable to the Indian standard (IS) specifications for Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC). We have produced the cement in a few Kg batches and tested the reproducibility of results from batch to batch for further scale up. The performance of a water-drive reservoir having a gas cap depends primarily on the movement of the gar-oil and oil-water contacts. The movement of the contacts during production depends in turn on fluid withdrawals and how the reservoir pressure changes as fluids are produced from the reservoir; that is, on how effectively the aquifer maintains pressure by replacing withdrawals. inasmuch as pressure changes, fluid withdrawals, contact positions, and produced gas-oil and oil-water ratios are interdependent, the analysis and prediction of the performance of a reservoir produced in a given way must take into account this interdependence throughout depletion. This paper presents an analysis which, within the limitations of the assumptions made, yields an engineering approach to predicting future performance based on reservoir pressure and production history. The most significant assumption is the method of extrapolation of future gas-oil and water-oil ratios. The extrapolation procedure smoothly increases both ratios to preselected values as the remaining oil column undergoes a specified decrease in thickness. This preselection is made on the busis of previous field experience in depletion of similar reservoirs under similar conditions. For computing future performance a vdumebic balance L combined with the differential equation defining pressure distribution in the aquifer to obtain positions of water-oil and gas-oil contacts. From these positions are extrapolated produced water-oil and gas-oil ratios. Reservoir performance can be investigated when oil production rates are dependent upon various factors including the performance of the reservoir itself. Examples of practical application of the procedure are included. INTRODUCTION To predict performance of water-drive reservoirs with gas caps and thin oil columns, it is necessary to describe the motions of the fluids within the reservoir during the entire production period to depletion. These motions depend on the pressure changes and on the withdrawal of oil, gas and water. Production of oil from the oil zone primarily causes water to move in to take its place; production of gas from the cap tends to cause oil to migrate into its place. In addition, the volumes of oil and gas remaining in the reservoir depend on changes in the pressure, since a decrease in pressure causes fluid expansion, gas liberation and oil shrinkage. A method of relating the future pressure to total withdrawals is used to describe the motions of fluids within the reservoir under conditions arising in possible modes of production. The analysis is based on two relationships and will reduce the problem to one amenable to digital computation. The first of these concerns the dependence of the pressure distribution in the entire aquifer furnishing the water drive upon the total reservoir withdrawals. This dependence is dictated by the permeability distribution and the extent of the aquifer; at present, such information is most readily obtained from the performance history by means of the resistancecapacitance reservoir analyzer. The second relation involves withdrawals, pressure in the reservoir, and movement of oil, gas, and water within the reservoir. The analysis is subject to certain simplifying assumptions that are necessary to permit solution of the problem. A comparison of the methods of this paper with those presently practiced is pertinent. One method of analysis is to use the reservoir analyzer to predict reservoir behavior based on aquifer characteristics determined from production history. Inasmuch as the total withdrawal rate depends upon the gas-oil and water-oil ratios, which depend in turn upon, among other things, the positions of the gas-oil and water-oil contacts, these ratios must be assumed in advance. In this paper these ratios are, instead, related to the computed positions of gas-oil and water-oil contacts. Thus, our method can be applied to problems in which the oil production rate is limited by produced gas-oil ratio, or to problems in which it is desired to determine the variable gas injection rate that will maintain the gas-oil or water-oil contact stationary. These problems cannot be worked satisfactorily on the analyzer. Another method presently used is based on a paper by Hurst.' Glencore, in collaboration with Cascadia Scientific, conducted a study to improve the haul roads at the Antapaccay mining operation. The study utilized Cascadia's SmartRView platform for data collection, complemented by precise instrumentation installed on both Komatsu and Caterpillar haul trucks Antapaccay worked closely with Cascadia's Data Scientists,employing various statistical methods to analyze the data and identify potential enhancements to the haul road design. The study utilized Cascadia Scientific's heat mapping tool to identify road segments with high fuel intensity . As a result, four main road segments were identified for improvement.

The value of U.S. mineral raw material output reached a record $63.1 billion in 1975. This high exceeded the 1974 value of $55.2 billion by 14 percent. Among the three major mineral categories -fuels, metals, and nonmetals -only fuels showed an increase in value. Both the metal and nonmetal categories showed declines in value. The significance of this nearly $63 billion mineral output can be noted in the fact that it is the basis for the subsequent production of over $270 billion a year in energy and processed materials. Of the 78 individual mineral commodities included in these 1975 totals, only 17 registered gains in output, while 45 registered value increases, reflecting higher prices.
