Rapid drifting enables quicker access to orebodies, higher production rates and a resultant reduction in production cost. The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) funded by the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization (CAMIRO) has developed a methodology for safe rapid drift development within the underground metalliferrous mining industry in Canada According to industry survey, about 36% of drift development cycle time is spent on support installation. MIRARCO has developed a methodology for safe rapid drift development based on minimizing time spent on support installation. The methodology includes a critical review of the rockmass classification systems, examination of current support practices in the mining industry and civil tunneling, review of rapid drift development practice in South Africa, introduction of risk hazard procedures to account for material property variability and the development of a WIZARD as a quick decision-making tool for the implementation of the procedures. A comprehensive field data collection procedure was put in place and data collected from various mines to verify and calibrate the support selection rationale. The findings of the research programme resulted in the development of an improved rockmass classification system and showed that construction effects have drastic influence on support levels but is often not accounted for in assessing support levels. Stress effects and structurally controlled failures are the other important factors to take into account in rapid drift development. Three support classes were established for safe rapid drift development as No Systematic Support, Light Support and Strong Support. The support levels took into account cost, rate of installation and safety based on compatibility with ground characteristics. This paper describes the methodology for safe rapid drifting within the underground metalliferrous mining industry in Canada and highlights the key issues and major drivers behind their continued development at the Geomechanics Research Centre within MIRARCO.

This paper identifies the need for the development of specialized inverse solution techniques for the analysis of pressure transient data for the characterization of the transport and sorption properties of coal seams. Central to the proposed inverse solution technique is a specially structured artificial neural network (ANN). The most important transport and sorption characteristics of coal seams are butt and face cleat permeabilities, macropore porosity, Langmuir volume constant, Langmuir pressure constant, and sorption time constant. Conventional methods, such as type curve matching techniques and laboratory-derived measurements are handicapped in terms of being representative over the entire domain of interest. In this paper, we utilize analytical forward solution techniques for various combinations of characteristics of coal seams to generate training and testing patterns. These training patterns are shown to an ANN structured to learn the ubiquitous non-linear relationships that exist between coal seam properties, input conditions and the pressure transients measured. The trained networks are then extensively tested to ensure that they have effectively learned the training patterns. In the final stage of the development, the networks are run in the prediction mode. The responses of the networks are found to be in agreement with the input data. The developed networks are able to generate results generally within 5% error margin for permeability and porosity and 20% error margin for the sorption characteristics of coal seams. A number of examples highlighting the capabilities and degree of effectiveness of the network in characterizing the coal seams areincluded. "On July 26, 2000, the Canada Foundation for Innovation announced an award of $1.3 M dollars for The Centre for Environmental Research in Minerals, Metals and Materials, CERM3, at The University of British Columbia. Additional funding was also provided by the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund ($1.3 M) and the UBC Stewart Blusson Fund ($0.7 M). Annual industrial grants and contracts are providing support funding for the on-going research projects. Corporate membership in CERM3 entitles each participant to a seat on the technical advisory committee (TAC) as well as access to the five laboratory facilities currently under construction. Both the federal and provincial governments will also participate in the TAC through NRCan-CANMET and the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines, respectively. CERM3’s mission is:• to develop innovative methods to deal with environmental problems created by mining activity;• to promote sustainable development as a hallmark of management decision-making; • to produce mining and processing engineers with the required environmental skills; and• to enhance the image of mining in society as a vibrant and necessary component of a modern economy and society which disturbs the environment for the benefit of mankind.CERM3 brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from over 12 departments at The University of British Columbia (UBC) to work on mining-related environmental problems. These include: chemistry; soil sciences; chemical and biological engineering; earth and ocean sciences; microbiology; civil engineering; electrical engineering; metals and materials engineering; mechanical engineering; mining and mineral processing, the Westwater Research Centre; the Institute for Resources and the Environment; and the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. The centre intends to interact with scientists from industry, governments and other universities across Canada and around the world. CERM3 aims to become Canada’s leading environmental research facility for the mining industry. This paper describes the evolution of CERM3 and its coordinated multi-disciplinary approach to mining and the environment. Some of CERM3’s research projects include:• developing new protocols for environmental analyses to provide consistent and reliable assays;• isolating a natural virus for Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and other bacteria responsible for acid rock drainage (ARD);• designing bio-remediation and adsorption techniques for mine effluents;• promoting and enhancing the use of hydrometallurgy to reduce environmental pollution;• examining new approaches to comminution to decrease energy consumption;• developing a magnetically levitated hoisting system to reduce the footprint of a mine operation;• building a state-of-the-art supercomputer network laboratory for mine/mill simulations; and• designing intelligent bulkheads to seal tunnels following mine closure to survive for 1000 years.This latter project involves the establishment of a research station at the Britannia mine site, 45 km north of Vancouver, which will provide a full-scale facility to design the “Millennium Plug” and contribute directly to the solution to one of North America’s worst ARD-contaminated sites."

Transporting goods from producers to consumers is a fundamental part of the US economy. The demand for transportation closely reflects the economic health and well-being of the nation's industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors. The inland waterway barge industry has traditionally played a key role in transporting needed commodities to industries on an economical basis. Barges account for 10% of the domestic intercity tonnage carried by all transportation modes. Water carriers operating on inland waterways hauled more than 450 Mt (500 million st) of cargo in 1980-up from 428 Mt (472 million st) in 1970. Inland Waterway Shipments Metallic and nonmetallic minerals comprise one of the largest commodity groups moved on inland waterways. As illustrated in Table 1, metallic and nonmetallic mineral shipments accounted for more than 69 Mt (77 million st), or nearly 15% of all commodities shipped in 1980. Putting this tonnage in perspective, coal and petroleum represent the two largest commodities moved on inland waterways. In 1980, petroleum and petroleum products accounted for 138 Mt (152 million st), or 28% of all commodities shipped. Similarly, coal represented 120 Mt (132 million st), or 25% or all commodities shipped. Even though shipments of metallic and nonmetallic minerals are smaller than coal and petroleum, they still account for a sizeable portion transported. The inland barge industry moves a variety of metallic and nonmetallic minerals ranging from manganese ores to building cement. Minerals transported by barge include: • iron, copper, bauxite, and manganese ores for metal production; • lime and limestone for construction and electric utility scrubbers; • phosphate rock, natural fertilizers, and gypsum for agricultural needs; • sand, gravel and crushed rock, clay, asphalt, tar, and pitches, and building cement for construction purposes; and • a host of other minerals to meet industrial needs. A few mineral commodities are responsible for a large proportion of waterborne mineral shipments.

Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 M tons annually. They produced about 150 M tons in 2005, over 99% of which being from open-cut mines [1]. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. At present, there are only five small underground mines, three of which are old and the other two have only recently begun mining operations [2]. However, severe ground control problems have been occurring regularly, roof falls in particular. At a new mine developed from the highwall, a large bolted roof fall occurred at the heading face, killing two miners. Unfortunately, mining engineers and/or miners in this mine do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the operations of underground coal mines. Since 2001, Japan has started a ?five-year plan for coal technology transfer? to fill Japan?s moral obligation as the largest coal importer in the world. The research team for this accident was organized and the on-site investigation was conducted in order to find the cause of this accident and make the solution. This paper describes the roof fall accident at the mine, discusses its causes and mechanism and suggests the introduction of some techniques for improving the current support system considering the strata and stress conditions by means of field observation and finite element modeling.

A knowledge of the mechanics of wave propagation through the earth is essential if reliable communication systems are to be designed for coal mine environments. To obtain a reliable basis from which accurate propagation predictions could be drawn, a series of theoretical Studies have been prepared for the Bureau of Mines by Mr. Ramsay Decker of Spectra Associates, Inc. through a subcontract with Collins Radio Group. These reports formulate the analytical techniques from which wee may derive frequencies and antenna configurations that yield the optimum signal-to-noise ratios over the greatest distances in mine environments. The reports of sections 2 and 4 deal with analytical techniques for determining the signal-to-noise ratio within a mine environment for loop-to-loop and line source-to-loop antenna configurations. The analytical results of these reports were then implemented into computer programs to obtain predictions concerning through-the-earth signal propagation. These preliminary predictions are based on noise data compiled by Bensema, Maxwell and Stone, and WVU prior to the extensive research conducted by the National bureau of Standards (NBS). These initial measurements indicated a 20- to 30-dB lower noise level than that measured recently by N BS. The recent NBS data is that used by Collins in the final predictions.

Experimental work is report on the gasification of 90-percent through 200-mesh, strongly coking Sewickley-bed coal with oxygen and with steam in three temperature ranges, namely, 2,700° to 3,400° F., 1,600° to 2,000° F., and 230° to 250° F. Thirty-one runs have been made, during which 56,000 pounds of coal have been charged to the generator at feed rates of 200 to 450 pounds of coal per hour. The average results, not the optimum results, are given in the following tabulation:

In 1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 yr; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. coal mining workforce from March through September 1986. A companion report, Information Circular (IC) 9193, "Characterization of the 1935 Metal and Nonmetal Mining Workforce:' provides similar information for the U.S metal and nonmetal mining industry.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. "The content of production reports has its origins in raw measurements taken in harsh production environments. The ensuing measurement/estimation errors always affect reproducibility such that, regardless of the fact that they are balanced through statistical data reconciliation, reported numbers are simply the most probable values of inferred probability distributions. This has important implications for how metal recoveries should be monitored and reported. Indeed, in a context where many process optimisation activities are based on small improvements in recovery, there should be no doubt that inadequate handling of measurement/estimation errors can easily exaggerate or mask actual changes in process performance. However, estimates of the reproducibility of reported metal recoveries are rarely reported to plant management. This situation persists despite the fact that a code compliant metal accounting system must inform management about business risks related to metal accounting. To this extent, this paper focuses on the continuous management of reproducibility level of metal recoveries in compliance with the best practices. Sensitivity analysis of primary and secondary metal accounting models is performed to show the resulting probability distributions for metal recoveries. Some guidelines are given for designing and managing metal accounting systems capable of achieving and sustaining predefined levels for the reproducibility of metal recoveries.INTRODUCTIONEach and every mineral processing plant produces daily, weekly and monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalty elements are presented. While such production reports are usually consulted in offices, underlying raw measurements are taken in harsh production environments where mechanical vibrations, humidity, corrosion and dust, to name a few, disturb measurement procedures. It is thus no surprise that several authors (Francois-Bongarcon & Gy, 2002; Gaylard, Randolph, & Wortley, 2014; Holmes, 2010; Spangenberg & Minnitt, 2014) have reported pervasive issues related to mass/sampling measurements in the context of mineral processing."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been concerned for many years with the general problems of underground coal mining and the particular problems due to the methane content of the coal. The Bureau and others have worked diligently to improve the health and safety conditions for underground coal miners. It has been recognized for many years that the methane in coal would have some value if it could he recovered and used, Also its removal before coal mining began or during the mining cycle itself would make mining safer and more economic due to a potential saving in ventilation costs. The work covered in this report was carried out to review methods of removing methane from active and inactive regions of operating coal mines and to determine how the methane could be concentrated and utilized economically.

The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation in order to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration.

INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

This report describes research directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen (02) sources which exhibited improved 02 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(02)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. The Ca(02)2) was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x-ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(02)2 synthesis process were studied. Next, the reactivity of Ca(02)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (C02) was evaluated and was compare o that of K02 under flow-test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of K02 and Ca(02)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, K02-based, self-contained self-rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(02)2 or a mixture of K02 and Ca(02)2 were used as a replacement for K02.

The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

Sulphate decomposition was studied in the conditions of a typical copper flash smelting heat recovery boiler. The aim was to determine the kinetics of the copper sulphate decomposition reactions and to find out if they are likely to take place in the process conditions prevailing in an industrial HRB. The information is essential in CFD-modelling of the reactions taking place in the boiler and for optimising the process. Thermal decomposition of sulphates was studied by thermogravimetry. The experiments were conducted with a commercial copper sulphate, a partially sulphated copper oxide and an actual process flue dust. The main variables studied were temperature and gas composition of a N2-O2-SO2-mixture. The samples were characterized with SEM, optical microscope and XRD. Temperature affected the decomposition rate strongly but the gas composition had a minor effect on the kinetics. The decomposition was fastest in the partly sulphated oxide and slowest in commercial copper sulphate. Keywords: Sulphate decomposition, flash smelting, heat recovery boiler, flue dust

The Bureau of Mines studied pressure-buildup data from a number of California gas wells to determine if the reservoir properties calculated from these data correlated with field-observed reservoir properties. Pressure-buildup curves from 24 wells showed distinct changes in slope, indicating changes in permeability of the reservoir rock. Calculated distances from the wells to indicated permeability changes were in fair agreement with distances deter-mined in the field. Pressure-buildup curves from three wells had more than one distinct change in slope, indicating multiple permeability changes. Thus field data supported the theoretical relations used to calculate reservoir properties from pressure-time relations measured in gas wells.
