"The operators of mineral processing plants collect daily samples from strategic process streams with a view to prepare production balances to assess plant performances. The rules to minimize the risk of systematic sampling errors are known and applied in many mineral processing plants. The mass of the sample to be collected is calculated to yield a target measurement reproducibility considering the fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous material. This paper demonstrates that this practice is partly valid if one does not account for the time variation of the ore composition during the day. The concept is demonstrated using samples collected on a 30 minute basis from different streams of a gold ore concentrator. Results show that depending of the natural variability of the stream characteristics the mass of the daily samples may not be the critical variable to obtain reproducible measurements. On the other hand the number of cuts taken during the day could impact on the variance of the measurements obtained from daily samples.IntroductionMineral processing plants may treat several thousand tons of ore every day to produce concentrate or impure gold ingots. The operation and performances of these plants are monitored on a daily basis through the collection of ore samples from various streams of the processing circuit. The samples are prepared and assayed to obtain the concentrations of target elements that are subsequently used to calculate the mass flowrates in the streams of the circuit and ultimately the distribution of the target metals for the estimation of the plant performances (Morrison, 2009; Lachance and Leroux, 2016).The acquisition of representative and reproducible samples is therefore the first step in the characterization of plant performances. The term representative sample is used here to indicate an unbiased sample, i.e. a sampling procedure that does not introduce a systematic error. Rules for the collection of unbiased samples are reviewed in the literature by different authors (e.g. Morrison, 2009) and are not discussed in this paper. The term reproducible indicates the dispersion of the measurements around the average value of a characteristic of a stream meets an acceptable level of variance. The reproducibility of a measurement process (sampling and analysis) is assessed by the relative standard deviation or coefficient of variation of the measurement that is a function of the sampling and assaying errors (Morrison. 2009; Gy, 1979). Usually the focus is put on the fundamental error of sampling whose variance can be controlled by the choice of the primary sample mass or adequate particle size reduction during the preparation of secondary or tertiary samples extracted for the chemical analysis. When a sample is taken from a stream that exhibits a time varying characteristic, the obtained measurement exhibits a variability that is not only a function of the sample mass but also of the natural variability of the ore in the sampled stream. This paper examines this aspect of the sampling of a time varying process on the reproducibility of composite samples for a day of production."

A population balance model accounting for the transient variations in drop size distributions in a stirred liquid-liquid system is analyzed for its effect on chemical reaction conversion in a stirred, batch reactor. The analysis is applied specifically for phase transfer catalytic reactions, which indicates that transient effects of evolution of drop size distributions may be important in such systems.

The Deep Mixing Method (DMM) was employed to raise and support the LPV (Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity) -111 Levee in New Orleans. Even using innovative technologies, the tight schedule to achieve the 100 year elevation by June 1, 2011 was a daunting endeavor. The size and scope of DMM proposed for LPV-111 was on a scale never attempted outside of Japan. Over 1.65 million cubic yards of DMM was installed. LPV-111 is adjacent to the Bayou Sauvage Wildlife Refuge, which is the largest urban National Wildlife refuge in the United States. By utilizing DMM to control settlement and improve stability of the taller levee, side slopes were steepened from the conventional 1V:4H to 1V:2.85H, thus avoiding encroachment into the Bayou Sauvage and reducing the amount of clay needed for the completed levee. The COE utilized Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) for this contract. The ECI process allowed for input from the DMM contractor, TREVIICOS South, in order to optimize equipment resources and material requirements. This paper gives an overview of the extensive DMM requirements for LPV-111 and explains the benefits of the ECI process.

RECENTLY Aust et al.&apos; proposed a model of non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation based on a vacancy gradient induced uphill diffusion process of solute to grain boundaries. According to their proposal, solute atoms which are attracted to vacancies would, during the cooling of a sample, migrate with vacancies toward grain boundaries (vacancy sinks) and thereby enhance the solute concentration in boundary regions. For solute atoms which are not attracted to vacancies no such boundary solute enrichment would be expected. These concepts were given experimental support by boundary and bulk mi-crohardness measurements of various thermally treated dilute zinc and lead alloys and also doped aluminum oxide. The underlying assumption in their work was that solute enrichment in boundary regions is indicated by higher microhardness values. From thermodynamic considerations1&apos;2 it appears that the solid-liquid solute distribution coefficient (K), defined as the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid at equilibrium, indicates whether attractive or repulsive forces exist between vacancies and solute atoms. K < 1 indicates a solute-vacancy attractions, K > 1 indicates no, or a repulsive, vacancy-solute interaction. This note is to report on observations of different grain boundary etching phenomena in high purity zinc alloys. These phenomena appear to depend on whether a K < 1 or K > 1 solute is present. In experiments designed to measure directly the solute enrichment in grain boundary regions, samples of zone refined zinc with 0.1 at. pct solute additions were cooled from 380°C at a rate of 3°C per min. A surface layer of approximately 50 was then removed from the samples by chemical polishing. The samples&apos; surfaces were then protected by a chromating treatment such that in a subsequent etch only grain boundary regions were dissolved. The dissolved regions were approximately semicircular troughs, 10 µ in width. The grain boundaries were usually in the middle, i.e., at the bottom, of this trough. For zinc containing the K < 1 solutes cadmium and aluminum, the grain boundary was always indicated by a ridge as shown in Fig. 1. For pure zinc, and zinc containing the K > 1 solutes copper and gold, a groove at the bottom of the trough indicated the boundary position, Fig. 2., To test if these different grain boundary etching behaviors were possibly connected with the segregation process discussed above, the Zn-Cd alloy was again heated to 380°C and quenched into brine. After surface protection and etching it was found that this specimen no longer exhibited the grain boundary ridges but rather grain boundary grooves as shown in Fig. 2. It would appear, therefore, that the boundary ridge is a consequence of a process occurring during the slow cooling of the samples. From absorption spectrophotometric analysis it was found that for slowly cooled samples containing K < 1 solutes, the solute/zinc ratios of the material from the boundary trough were consistently considerably higher than the solute/zinc ratios of the bulk alloys. This boundary region solute enrichment was not observed in quenched samples. It is concluded therefore, that the boundary ridge shown in Fig. 1 is directly or indirectly connected with nonequilibrium solute segregation.

Deepwater discharges of sulfide flotation tailings have been practiced for several decades. Oxygen penetration and organic matter content in such environments are the two major factors that determine their reduction-oxidation condition and hence the rate of sulfide mineral dissolution under such discharge environments. In this study, the effects of solution redox potential and pH on the dissolution of some heavy metals from sulfide flotation tailings were examined. Zn, Pb and Cu concentrations in solution were all higher at a higher redox potential and lower pH. Dissolved Zn concentrations reached 100 ppm even at a low redox potential of 105 mV and near neutral pH after 33 days. Pb concentrations were below 2 ppm at 105 mV and near neutral pH after 165 days. At 105 mV, the Cu concentrations were below 0.2 ppm at near neutral pH after 165 days. At pH 2.3, the Fe concentrations were higher at 420 mV than at 105 mV. But at pH 6.8, the Fe concentrations were lower at 420 mV than at 105 mV, due to the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and the subsequent precipitation of ferric hydroxide. Arsenic concentrations in solution were all less than 0.002 ppm. For Zn, Cu and Fe, no significant differences were observed between the tests in solutions prepared using seawater and those using distilled water. However, Pb concentrations reached higher levels in solutions prepared using seawater.

Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for &apos;average&apos; competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of &apos;highly&apos; competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of &apos;highly&apos; competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

Gold was determined directly in eight different mill cyanide solutions, by atomic absorption spectroscopy in an acetylene-air flame. Some of the mill solutions were diluted with water to bring them into the most sensitive absorption region (5-50 p.p.m. Au) whereas those solutions with very low gold content &#171;2 p.p.m.) were concentrated by evaporation.Calcium was complexed with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to avoid the undesirable effect of a precipitate on atomization.When added to standard gold solutions, EDTA had no effect on absorption, nor did any of the impurities common in mill cyanide solutions.Known amounts of gold, ranging from 2 to 30 p.p.m., were added to mill solution&apos;aliquots and recovered to within 100 &#177; 2&#183;5 per cent. For duplicate determinations under normal worKing conditions, standard deviation was 1&#183;32 p.p.m.Excellent agreement was found between atomic absorption gold values and accurate fire assay values.INTRODUCTIONAtomic absorption spectroscopy has been shown to offer a rapid and accurate method for the determination of trace amounts of a number of metal ions. The concentration of a solute in a dilute ),zetallic solution may be measured by any of several parame- ters including weight percent, atom fraction, atom ratio, and lattice ratio. The ratio of filled to unfilled interstitial sites is useful for interstitial solutes. A variable 2 proportional to this ratio is used as a measuve of concentration. For component 2 irz a bitzary solution z2 = n2/Ym - nz/b) where b is the numberber of interstitial sites per lattice atom. For a nonmetallic solute or for one which strongly increases the actiuity of sulfur, it is convenient to assign arbitvarily a value vj = — 1. When this is done the derivative is found to be constant in each of the ternary solutions studied. The activity coefficient of sulfur in a complex liquid iron solution may be expressed as where nk is a second-order cross product determined in the quaternary solution Fe-S-j-k. The equation is used to calculate tlze activity of sulfur i)z three sevetl- component solutions. IN thermodynamic calculations concerning dilute solutions it is unnecessary to invoke laws and relations which extend across the concentration range to include concentrated solutions. In most binary metallic systems, as arkeen&apos; has recently pointed out, there exist two terminal composition regions of relatively simple behavior, connected by a central region of much greater complexity. When the solute is a nonmetal there is only one such region and in many systems the concentration range is extremely limited. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest a method for the calculation of activities in such a terminal region in which one or more solutes are dissolved in a single solvent of predominantly high concentration. HENRY&apos;S LAW In the usual textbook statement of Henry&apos;s law, concentration is stated in mole fraction. This has the advantage that it makes Henry&apos;s law thermodynamically consistent with Raoult&apos;s law. Since all measures of concentration at infinite dilution are related by simple proportion it follows that mole fraction, molality, atom ratio, weight percent, or any other unit of concentration can be used with the appropriate constant. At finite concentrations, however, calculations based on the law depend upon the unit employed. Deviations from Henry&apos;s law at finite concentrations depend upon the composition variable employed. They are evaluated in terms of activity and interaction coefficients2 which have become familiar features of metallurgical thermodynamics. It is the purpose of this paper to propose a measure of concentration for metallic solutions containing interstitial or nonmetallic solutes by means of which the calculation of activities in complex solutions may be simplified. The discussion will be restricted to free-energy interaction coefficients3 typified by Wagner&apos;s c|a BINARY SOLUTIONS The several measures of concentration which are to be considered are shown in line a of Table I. The corresponding activity coefficients are in line b and the deviation coefficients, sometimes called self-interaction coefficients, are in line c. Henry&apos;s law simply states that the activity coefficient approaches a constant value at infinite dilution. By adoptihg the infinitely dilute solution as the reference state and defining the "Henrian" activity as equal to the concentration in this state, the activity coefficient is always unity at infinite dilution. This convention is far sim~ler and more useful in dilute solution than emploiment of the &apos;Raoultian" activities and it will be used in the following discussion. The several definitions and equations of Table I will be referred to by means of their coordinates in the table. Early observations of deviations from Henry&apos;s law in metallic solutions were shown graphically4 rather than analytically. For the case of sulfur in liquid iron5 the slope of a plot of logfs vs (%S) was constant in the range 0 to 4.8 pct S, indicating constancy of eh2&apos; in Ic. He was proposed by wagnerz and has been widely adopted. The a function of IIIc recently employed by ~arkenl was designed specifically for dilute solutions. Darken has shown that the value of a12 remains essentially constant for many binary solutions within a substantial range of compositions. "This paper examines the application of blasthole sloping to narrow vein mining in Canada, for ore deposits where widths are less than two metres. While the technique has now been utilized for more than ten years, it remains in the experimental stage and on-site testing is necessary for its adoption at new mining operations or in differ¬ent geological settings. It is intrinsically a safer method than other narrow vein methods in current use.The investigation describes the main operating parameters for mines recently surveyed. The criteria for method applicability are defined and the problems encountered are studied. It is concluded that blasthole sloping for narrow vein mining is a viable modern method which promises to gain popularity and that emerging fragmentation technology and blasting research can be used to further increase applicability of the stoping method."

Paynter, B. K. Loveday and C. G. Robinson Economic surface mining of multiple seams by T. V. Falkie and W. E. PorterIn introducing his paper, Mr Roman said that whereas in manufacturing plants the yearly production levels were usually chosen to produce the largest annual cash flow, in a mining operation, the raw materials (ore) were exhaustible so that the production had to be scheduled to maximize the total net present worth of the operation. This optimum production schedule could be determined by using dynamic programming. The required information was readily available to management at most mines. The &apos;possible operating range&apos; of production rates lay between the rate with the highest profit per ton. and that with the highest profit per year. The optimum production rate started typically at the top of this range and decreased slowly as the deposit was depleted.Dynamic programming was used to determine several production schedules for a hypothetical mine-mill complex. The effects of changes in the ore grade estimates, size of deposit and acceptable rate of interest on the production schedule were taken into account. Apart from the fact that the net present worth of the overall profits was larger than that obtained by conventional methods, it appeared from the cases studied that the amount of metal recovered was also greater.Dr it P. King commented that this was a very interesting application of dynamic programming. He pointed out, however, that the market price of the metal was likely to vary significantly and randomly during the life of the mine, and he suggested that the problem should, therefore, be reformulated as a stochastic dynamic programming problem.If the price of the metal rose to abnormally high levels, a much higher than normal production rate could be expected. The results of analyses given in Table 5 showed that the production rate was a function of market price. In his view the stochastic problem could be solved just as easily as the deterministic problem.In reply to a question by Dr King as to whether the function relating recovery to production rate (Table I) was based on real data, the author replied that it was based on the results of an analysis conducted at the Union Carbide Corporation&apos;s Pine Creek tungsten mine in California.Dr D. M. Hawkins stated that costs were incurred when the production rate was altered, for example, in appointing or laying off staff, and that in practice it may be necessary to take these costs into account in finding the optimum production rate. Mr Roman replied that, while normal administrative costs were accounted for, the additional costs incurred in appointing and laying off staff were not taken into account."

"The separation of hematite fines (100% - 38 um) from quartz fines (100% -75 um) was investigated using coarse hematite (-212 + 150 um) as a carrier in an oleic acid collector system. Oleic acid additions, per cent coarse additions, combined conditioning time and ferric chloride additions were examined.It was found that carrier flotation is a dominant mechanism for fine hematite recovery at oleic acid levels greater than 200 g/t and coarse additions of 10 per cent. Hetero-aggregation is favoured under conditions of lower levels of oleic acid in the presence of ferric chloride and at conditioning times greater than ten minutes.Ferric chloride acts as a depressant for pre-reagentized coarse hematite at oleic acid levels below 150 g/t. At concentration levels above 500 g/t, ferric chloride interferes significantly with the success of carrier flotation of fine hematite.The sensitivity of carrier flotation to changes in oleic acid addition, ratios of fine and coarse material, conditioning time and the presence of an inorganic electrolyte emphasizes that its application is only suitable when flotation conditions can be stabilized.IntroductionThe production of fine material is unavoidable during the comminution of iron ore . Due to the difficulty of recovering iron from this fine material by various gravity separation methods, flotation can often be a more attractive process producing high-grade material at high recovery. One variation of the flotation process, that can be useful for recovering ultra fine minerals (<10 um) , is known as carrier flotation. This process involves the utilizat ion of coarse particles ( > 150 p.m) which act as flocculation centres to which the fine hematite particles (10 - 40 u.m) become attached and are carried or "" piggy-backed"" into the froth phase."

The effect of solute concentration and diffussivity on dendritic solidification of dilute binary aqueous solutions has been investigated; chlorides of sodium, potassium, lithiurn, and hydrogen were used as solutes. Dendrite spacings were measured in spherical droplets and in unidirectionally solidified specimens. In the droplets, the freezing rate is uniform over the entire specimen and remains constant from the beginning to the end of solidification. In the unidirec-tionally frozen specimens the freezing rate varies within a given volume of liquid during the solidification cycle; in addition, it varies with location uithin the specimen. Mass transport analysis has been used to calculate the supersaturation, AC, supercooling, AT, and transcerse growth velocity, V , of ice dendrites during solidijication from the dendrite spacings measured in the droplels. The ice dendrite spacing in a given solute increases lineary with the solule concentralion at a fixed freezing rate. The ualues of AC, AT, and V increase with an increase in solule concentration. The value of AT in the aqueous solution is of the same order of magnitude as in Al-Cu alloys of the same concentration; the dendrite spacings in Al-Cu alloys also increase with an increase in solute concentralion. For the jamily of aqueozrs solulions incestigaled, the dendrite spacing increases linearly with solute diffusivity at fixed values of concertralion and freezing ,rate. The values of ?C and ?T decrease, whereas the value of V increases with an increase in solule diffusicity. K. = -132 ± 10) 1. FREEZING of solutions is almost always an ehunmix-ing" process because the composition of crystallizing solid generally differs from that of the parent liquid. " Solute concentration and transport are therefore in]portant considerations in solidification of solutions. The influence of these factors on the dendritic solutions produced from metallic solutions is of practical significance since the properties of the solid aggre-gate are often strongly influenced by dendrite spacing.&apos;&apos;&apos; Alexander and Fthines3 found that dendrite spac- ings generally increase with solute concentration in several metallic systems. Michael and Bever1 have observed an increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings in dilute A1-Cu alloys. Rohatgi and AdamsJ have reported a linear increase in a aluminum dendrite spacings with increasing copper contents up to 28 pct in A1-Cu alloys. Bolling and Tiller"&apos; have theoretically examined the effects of solute concentration and diffusivity on the growth of cells and dendrites. Their analysis of dendritic growth assumes a steady-state growth and the maximum possible velocity for dendrite propagation. In addition, the quantitative analysis is restricted to dendrites of rotational symmetry and is therefore not directly applicable to the plate-shaped dendrites of ice obtained in the present study. There are practically no experimental observations of the effect of solute diffusivity on dendrite spacings in metallic systems. The reason appears to be the lack of experimental data on solute diffusion coefficients in liquid metallic solutions. The present work is concerned with the effect of solute concentration and diffusivity on dendritic solidification of dilute aqueous solutions: the solutes examined are potassium chloride. sodium chloride, lithium chloride. and hydrogen chloride. There were several reasons for selecting these solutes. The variation of dendrite spacing with freezing rate in these solutiolls is similar to that observed in A1-Cu alloys.8 These aqueous solutions have almost identical phase diagrams at dilute concentrations. "This paper looks at how Syncrude Canada Ltd. is utilizing the Conveyor Belt Monitoring technology developed and patented by the Australian CSIRO and licensed to Syncrude by Conveyor Belt Monitoring of North America, Inc. The technology involves magnetizing the steel cables in the conveyor belts and detecting the fields produced by breaks, gaps or cable ends using special sensors which feed the signals into a multi- channel recorder to provide permanent traces of the various events taking place in the steel cable belts.The data is analyzed and combined with existing belt audit programs, to assist in predicting belt life, change-out criteria and belt design, belt loading and construction. All of these applications of the CBM technology leads to better utilization of resources and forms an integral part of the conveying system reliability program."

The subject matter of this paper will be discussed under three main headings. 1.-Fire-Resistant Fluids: (a) the need for such materials, based on historical events; (b) a definition of fire -resistant fluids; (c) general description, characteristics, operational parameters, advantages and disadvantages of oil-in-water emulsions (HFB), water-polymer fluids (HFC) and anhydrous or synthetic fluids (HFD). 2.-A review of equipment associated with the use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids; (a) performance testing of hydraulic equipment, i.e. gear pumps, vane pumps, axial and radial piston pumps, hydraulic motors, etc., pressure, speed, filtration limitations, etc., and effects on valves, elastomers, paints, etc.; (b) hydraulic system design features and selection of suitable units; (c) types of mining applications currently employing fire-resistant fluids. 3.-Test methods used to evaluate fire-resistant fluids: (a) fire testing methods, i.e. wick tests, spray ignition testing, hot manifold tests, factory mutual tests, all to establish fire-resistancy parameters and acceptance; (b) new developments in fire-resistancy evaluation; (c) the examination of other performance tests, e.g., effects of evaporation, sliding wear, life of rolling element bearings, etc.

This paper describes some aspects of the planning of a new colliery which commenced production in the Middleburg district in 1966. An account is given of some of the problems encountered in the early years of operation and of what was done to solve them. The conclusion is reached that design of plant and machinery should be flexible to permit multiplication of units.
