"SummaryThe results of this investigation indicate that the gold in the cyanide tailing of refractory gold cyanides is occluded in fused •particles formed during roasting. This conclusion was reached following microscopic examination of calcines produced at various furnace temperatures with different atmospheres, and a •comparison with calcines produced by decomposing samples of completely sulphated concentrate under conditions such that the maximum particle temperature varied between 6•50°C. and 1,100°C. This comparison showed that the particle temperature during a normal roast may be several hundred degrees higher than the furnace atmosphere, or that the fusion is associated with a low melting (950°C.) eutectic mixture of FeO and FeS.Because of the unavoidable particle fusion during a furnace roast, and because low particle temperatures are essential for gold extraction by cyanidation, aqueous medium oxidation under high oxygen pressures was studied. Gold recovery from calcines produced by this means was over 98 •per cent •compared with a maximum of 80 per cent from furnace calcines.IntroductionMANY arsenical gold ores are called 'refractory' because much ' of the gold cannot be satisfactorily extracted by cyaniding the raw ore or concentrate. The work covered by this report was undertaken at the request of Dr. J. A. Holmes, late Director of the Bureau of Mines, to whom the writer had been recommended by C. W. Goodale and E. P. Mathewson, of Butte and Anaconda, Mont. The director's offer was accepted for the honor it conferred and for the useful results that might be promulgated by the work in the technical field covered. The investigation was facilitated by permission to visit various works and sometimes by contributions of important definite information on a given subject. In this report considerable space has been devoted to general and theoretical principles on the ground that under modern conditions the best results in any field of activity can be attained only with the a. id of an adequate knowledge of the best theories underlying the practice. The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so that it will make no difference whether pig iron or gold bullion is offered for test. It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate any one method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.

SUMMARY. The supports account for over 501 of the total expenditure for a longwall face. The success and economics of a face depend upon the optimum selection of type and density of the supports. Empirical solutions involving uncertain safety factor are replaced by a geo-mining approach developed at OMRS in which the support resistance is defined by the stability index of the roof rock mass and the failure pattern of the immediate roof. The paper gives the methodology adopted to define the support resistance for Alkusha colliery longwall face of Jharia coalfield (India). The stability index of the roof mass varied from 218 to 520 for the individual beds and 1100 to 1374 for the immediate roof mass. The exact support resistance for the condition was found to be 42 t/m2.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world's economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) operates the Cayeli underground copper mine in Turkey. In response to a lost time incident (LTI) that occurred at the mine in 2022, the mine management decided to introduce a new safety approach on-site. The initiative began with a comprehensive safety culture analysis conducted by Arti Consulting, involving focus group studies. Employees actively participated in candid discussions, sharing their insights on safety issues and offering solutions. These conversations were meticulously audio recorded, resulting in over 150 000 words collected from more than 100 employees. These transcribed narratives then underwent rigorous semantic analysis, with the assistance of a sociologist, to identify and dissect patterns of unsafe behaviour. This analysis found areas for improvement, particularly in near-miss and incident reporting, quality of safety toolbox talks and effectiveness of pre-work risk assessments. Subsequently, mine management deliberated on these insights and devised corrective actions. An emphasis was placed on involving all employees in the corrective actions through communication training, empowering them to own the decisions and changes made. These impactful measures were seamlessly integrated into FQM’s Think! Safety Program, which embodies FQM’s sensible health and safety strategy. FQM partnered with Strika Entertainment (Strika) to develop innovative visual-first safety communication tools that use illustration, animation and graphic design to simplify complex messaging into easy-to-understand edutainment. As part of this approach to safety communications, Cayeli and Strika revamped the safety toolbox talks to encourage employees to voice their concerns and receive feedback when their suggestions were implemented. The response from employees has been positive, with over 200 unsafe behaviours and conditions reported within the initial two months of launching the Think! Safety Program. Remarkably, the Cayeli Mine has not experienced any LTIs for the past 500 days as of 9 December 2023. This paper encapsulates the dedicated efforts to transform Cayeli into a safer mining operation.

"It is frequently necessary to excavate a tunnel for Civil Engineering purposes, or wells for petroleum exploitation, in laminated rock mass like schists or phyllites or in highly foliated gneisses. The determination of the pre-existing in situ stresses is essential, in order to assure the stability of these excavations. In most cases, the pre-existing triaxial stress field is arbitrary in relation to the tunnel or well axis. For these rock masses the concept of Generalised Plane Strain can be correctly utilized.There are closed form solutions for the calculation of stresses in anisotropic rock masses under Generalised Plane Strain conditions (Lehknitskii, 1981 and Hong , 1994). Based on these analytical solutions, established for the cases of Generalised Plane Strain, a synthetic problem will be formulated: the theoretical in situ stress tensor acting on this rock mass will be determined, with the aid of Bayesian Inverse Problem Techniques, as developed by de Mello Franco (2009). Additionally, the reliability of results obtained will be evaluated, in accordance with the research performed by this author. INTRODUCTIONThe Inverse Problem Technique, as developed in the paper, is based on the definitions and concepts obtained from the current literature and used for the solution of Inverse Problems, but the innovation to be presented is the utilisation of Bayesian Techniques and the determination of the reliability of the results obtained. This will be shown in a synthetic example where the determination of the in situ stress tensor, from strain measurements in a drill hole is supposedly performed. It is assumed that this drill has its axis arbitrarily placed in relation to the rock mass. Generalised Plane Strain conditions will hold for use with problem. The equations of Beltrami – Mitchel, in agreement to Lekhnitskii (1981) and Ong (1994), will be used in this synthetic case, for calculating strains, hypothetically measured in the hole before the final excavations. Finally a synthetic example for the determination of the in situ stress in a fully anisotropic rock mass, based on Bayesian Techniques and its reliability, developed in de Mello Franco (2009) is presented."

With a growing emphasis on maximizing the value by rapidly deploying it across their assets, mining firms are eager to identify any issues that may hinder such efforts and to refine their approaches to overcome them. As such a CDE vision can be considered realized when the following components are addressed and functioning as intended - People: the right resources working together and efficiently to achieve shared goals, Process: well-defined workflows mapped out for key value processes, Technology: availability of the correct tools and applications to increase efficiency in work execution and Locations: regional locations/ sites that need to be linked for collaboration and information exchange. For the above vision, an approach that considers the degree of interaction between the roles in metallurgy operations, mineral resource planning, mine engineering, plant operations, logistics and infrastructure, and which accounts for the current technology states across these groups to determine sub-processes where the impact of a CDE will be the most is critical. In effect, CDE is more about transforming an organization?s operational philosophy than a technology driven project. This paper examines the definition and components of a CDE in a mining context. Real-time operations co-ordination, maintenance interventions, production analysis and optimization processes are examined along with current state technologies and manual processes as candidates which are likely to result in most benefits from collaborative work processes. Finally, the paper examines technologies that can be used to further enable a collaborative working environment.

We have studied optical properties of fluorescent nanoparticles. These particles consist of a metal (gold/silver) core, an empty and a dye labelled silica shells. The different dye molecules with moderate quantum yields (about 0.3) has been used. Almost all of types of nanoparticles show fluorescence enhancement. This enhancement is strongly dependent on the degree of the overlap between the surface plasmon band of the metal and the absorption/emission band of the dye molecules. The results are interpreted in terms of competition between local field enhancement and quenching of fluorescence by the metal surface.

IT is a well-known fact that the results of different analysts, when operating on the same identical sample of steel or iron, are far from concordant, and it not infrequently happens that great annoyance and trouble in the commercial community are occasioned by these discrepancies. Attempts have been made at various times to investigate the causes of such differences and to obtain more reliable methods of analysis. The most important of these was made by the British Association in 1889: The following gentlemen, with Sir W. Roberts-Austen as Chairman, and Professor T. Turner as Secretary, were constituted as a committee to investigate the question, viz.: Sir F. A. Abel, Mr. Edward Riley, Mr. G. J. Snelus, Mr. John Spiller, Professor J. W. Langley, and Professor Tilden. Average .samples of steel were prepared in America under the superintendence of Professor J. W. Langley. The steels, in the form of turnings, were divided and distributed to sub-committees in Great Britain, America, France, Germany, and Sweden. The first bulletin (269) 3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, compiled the entropy values then available for the elements and in-organic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. Elaborations and revisions followed in 1936 (272) and 1941 (280), when over 500 usable entropy values were tabulated. The present bulletin constitutes a further elaboration and revision. The accumulation of data since 1940 has been marked, and 800 entropy values now are available. The present bulletin also contains all the pertinent explanatory matter that appeared in its predecessors. Thus, it retains the same dual purpose of assembling the available values of the entropies at 298.16° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds and giving enough explanation of methods of calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—In order to throw some light on this interesting subject, a series of experiments were made with strips of mild steel, containing about 0.14 per cent. of C and 0.22 per cent. of Ma. These strips were thoroughly cleaned and brightened before use, salts were added to distilled water until it corresponded as nearly as possible to the analysis given by Mr. Lee, and in this water at different temperatures were placed four strips of steel; while four other strips, at corresponding temperatures, were placed in the water used at the Washoe Reduction Works. The latter plant has had no trouble from corrosion of furnace-jackets, pipe-lines or boilers. The analysis of the water used at the Washoe works is: Grains er U. S. Gallon. CaCO3........... 2.92 CaSO3........... 0.76 MgCI3........... 0.64 MgCO3........... 0.58 A1203........... 0.12 Fe2O3........... 0.12 SiO2........... 0.58 NaCl........... 0.35 Organic matter, etc.,........ 1.16 7.23 This water is neutral to litmus; while the artificial Copper Queen water was very slightly alkaline, which Mr. Lee informs us is also true of the water at Douglas. Both waters mere well aerated by pouring from beaker to beaker, and by blowing in air from the experimenter's lungs. The results of these tests, given in Table I., show that there is no significant difference between the effects of the two waters.

Gold deposits hosted by banded iron formation (BIF) in Ontario exhibit a marked association with localized zones of deformed and hydrothermally altered BI:F . Secondary sulphides and carbonates are conspicuous. Proposed carbonate-facies IF , or exhali tes, such as green carbonate in the Larder Lake camp and ankerite veins in the Porcupine Camp are structurally controlled, hydrothermally deposited zones of carbonate replacement and fissure filling. Gold precipitation from hyd r othermal fluids in strain-generated conduits may be due to (a) plating upon secondary sulphides, (b) pH change due to carbonatization of BIF or (c) destabilization of gold in solution due to sulphidation of BIF .

The problems caused by interaction in multi-horizon mining are world wide and are not limited to the coal industry. These problems will continue to increase as mining of new seams multiplies and replaces production from mined out horizons. Interaction problems are particularly evident in the Appalachian coal fields which contain many mineable, contiguously placed coal seams. Selection of the mining sequence of these seams, historically and currently, is based primarily on considerations of seam ownership, availability, and economics. Experience has shown, however, that mining any seam can seriously affect subsequent operations in coal seams both above and below the one being mined. This interaction effect is often detrimental to the recovery cost and safety of mining the subsequent seams. Designing to avoid or minimize interaction effects represents a major challenge to the modern coal mining industry and therefore is the focus of this research. In an effort to evaluate past interaction effects and provide guidelines for future mine design, interactive ground control problems were categorized into four areas. These are pillar load transfer, massive interseam shearing, subsidence and pressure arching effects. To facilitate research, each of these areas was studied separately although in reality these subdivisions are arbitrary and have considerable overlap.

This information circular, which describes mining methods and practices at the Baguio Gold Mining Co., Philippine Islands, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs. Since January 1952, Baguio Gold Mining Co. has operated its rehabilitated mine and mill in the Baguio district. Postwar labor and supply costs are three or four times prewar costs, whereas ore tenor and tonnage are about the same. Ore reserves remain approximately the same, but deeper and more spreadout operations add to increasing costs. Recently the company has acquired an adjoining property, which may lengthen its life substantially. Costs and general operations are more or less typical of the district, which includes three other active gold mines. Gold ore mined in the district totals approximately 4,300 tons per day.

Despite the successful industrial practice to recovery KCl by flotation, the adsorption state of collectors at KCl salt surfaces is still not fully understood. In this paper, the captive bubble contact angle measurements at KCl and NaCl crystal surfaces in their saturated solutions are reported. The influence of different collectors and their concentration are considered. The results show that both cationic and anionic collectors produce a hydrophobic state at the structure breaking KCl salt sur-face, with finite contact angle values of between 30o and 40o. In contrast, the contact angle at the structure making NaCl salt surface is zero at all collector concentrations, suggesting that no collec-tor adsorption occurs, a supposition that is supported by results from molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). Further, it appears that the presence of surface defects such as edges and corners promote the adsorption of collectors at the KCl surface, and that the flotation is achieved by bubble attachment at the edges/corners of KCl particles with the formation of aeroflocs.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1978, 12 companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 65% of production capacity. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 31% of the total capacity; Gulf Coast States 23%; Northern States 26%; and other Southern States 20%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1978 was valued at $5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1978, building accounted for about 25%; packaging 22%; transportation 23%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses 11%.

"Creating stable, safe, constructible and cost effective support to openings in segmental linings is often an important component of successful delivery of a tunnel project. The many constraints on successful implementation include operational, spatial, geotechnical, structural, and constructability. Failure to address these adequately can lead to significant impacts on cost, schedule, and safety. With reference to past project experiences, this paper provides a guide to the most commonly deployed solutions and their pros and cons to help designers quickly identify the most appropriate solutions for a particular project, or act as a starting point for developing new and/or project specific solutions. It highlights the challenges that designers and contractors must address together for successful support of tunnel openings, and the constraints that arise. It then describes the common structural forms of support, and how each form can mitigate the constraints, allowing an effective opening support system to be implemented. INTRODUCTION While only a small portion of the total excavated volume of a typical tunnel, cross passages are often one of the most complex elements of a bored tunnel to construct. Cross passages in soft ground typically involve ground improvement, groundwater control, and multiple temporary support measures to ensure safe construction in ground that has been overstressed due to the construction of the running tunnels. Permanent lining construction requires careful detailing of waterproofing and reinforcement to support both long term ground and water loads and support the broken out rings of the main lining. While there is not a great deal of literature specific to cross passage construction, the main issues are discussed in some detail by Lawrence and Taylor (2011). However, the temporary support of the running tunnel segmental linings during cross passage construction is not always given the attention it deserves. The authors have been unable to find much literature on the design of such systems, much less the considerations that have led to a particular solution. Lawrence and Taylor only mention two potential methods of support. It may be easy to dismiss the opening support as an inconsequential item, but selection of the wrong support type can have significant impacts on both cost and schedule."

"New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below mill cutoff -grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyritebearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan’s mine in Morenci, AZ. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation. Introduction The Morenci ore deposit, located in eastern Arizona, has been mined for copper for 140 years. Mineralization in the Morenci district consists of sulfides and oxides. To process these ores, Morenci operates concentrator and leaching circuits. Leaching accounts for two-thirds of the copper produced in Morenci. More than one-half of this leaching-derived copper production comes from run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles. The largest category of material moved in Morenci is destined for ROM stockpiles and waste dumps. Materials that are not economic to mill or leach are designated “waste.” However, this designation can change based on improvements in extraction technology and commodity prices. Chalcopyrite does not leach well due to its refractory nature. For predominant chalcopyrite mineralized ore, copper recovery during a typical leaching cycle may be as low as 5%. For this reason, chalcopyritedominant ores below mill cutoff grade have historically been classified as waste. By incorporating advanced leaching technology to improve metal recovery from previously leach-resistant ore types such as chalcopyrite, the Morenci Mine has been able to reclassify substantial amounts of this “waste” to “ore.” Process chemistry Chalcopyrite copper extraction is temperature, oxygen and ferric dependent. The temperature is achieved primarily by pyrite oxidation (Eq. (1)) and secondarily by oxidation of chalcopyrite itself (Eq. (2)). The regeneration of ferric in solution can be enhanced by providing the appropriate acid and oxygen levels according to Eq. (3). In the absence of microorganisms, this reaction is very slow."

The rare-earth group are among the least familiar of the 92 known elements. Moreover, the relatively few people who have even heard of the rare earths ordinarily regard them merely as very rare elements having unusual names but doubtful commercial application. This typical attitude can be attributed partly to the fact that no commercial uses have been developed for most of the members of the group and partly to the fact that those which do enter into useful articles do so anonymously. Most people speak with a degree of familiarity of the "chromium" plating on their automobiles or household appliances; "antimony" ash trays and cigarette boxes are on sale in many department stores; and "tungsten" lamps and even "molybdenum" steels are advertised in popular magazines. However, the average user of a pocket cigarette lighter is not conscious that the important sparking element is a "flint" made from ferrocerium, and if he does chap on to inquire about the composition he is likely to be told that it is "sparking alloy", "misch metal", or 'pyrophoric alloy." Similarly, the wearer of spectacles made of "Crookes" or other tinted glass probably is not aware that the light softening effects are due to the presence of rare-earth oxides, or that the arc light on his street may owe its brilliance to cerium fluoride in the carbon electrode. Despite a variety of practical applications, however, most of the rare-earth metals still must be listed as scientific curiosities. In fact, little is known as to the properties which may make them useful products at some future date. Meanwhile it is important to note that Nature has been relatively generous in her distribution of the rare earths and that adequate supplies of most of them will be forthcoming when these elements have proved their worth as commercial products.

Results of the study targeted to development of universal acidic-extraction-precipitation technology for gallium recovery from the sublimates are presented in the paper. This will let to utilize a new non-traditional source for gallium production. Phase composition of gallium containing dust was studied. Forms of gallium in the sublimates were determined. The main form is Ga2O3, however, GaP form is also present in the cottrel dust and Na5Ga3F14 form is present in the dust of aluminum electrolysis. The possibility of gallium concentration was established via secondary pyro-selection of the dust. Kinetics of interaction of dust components with sulfuric acid was studied. The products of the interaction subsequently were leached with water. Optimum conditions for direct leaching with HCl and H2SO4 were determined providing gallium recovery from the cottrel dust and the ash carry outs up to 95 %. Gallium recovery from the primary dust and the secondary dust of aluminum electrolysis was at 52; 64 % and 63; 83 % respectively. Effect of Fe, P, K, Na and Al admixtures for gallium extraction from hydrochloric acid solutions was studied. It was shown that gallium chloride complex (GaCl4-) is extracted into the organic phase from the following acid mixtures: HCl + H2SO4, HCl + H3PO4, HCl + H2SO4 + H3PO4, HCl + HF. Kinetic regularities of gallium extraction in the system (tri butyl phosphate) TBP ? HCl - Ga were studied using diffusion cell method with agitation. Optimum conditions for gallium extraction from complex hydrochloric acid solutions with TBP were found providing 99.9 % recovery and separation coefficient for gallium and iron (III) of more than 25 in one stage. Sodium hydroxide and water were selected as reagents for re-extraction of gallium from the organic phase. Different options for disposal of by-products that are formed in the processing of cottrel dust, ash sublimates and dust of aluminum electrolysis were proposed and tested.
