Sludges and dusts generated by steel mills usually cause environmental problems and has a high cost solution. This presentation offers a different aproach to the problem with a solution that not only solves the enviromental issue but also brings great savings to the mill. This technology, reuses dusts and sludges in the sintering process, after they are mixed to the right composition.

Removal of As(III) and As(V) in Aqueous Solution There are toxic arsenical species such as As(III) and As(V), and arsenious species have specially strong toxicity. The strong toxicity causes contamination of groundwater and water pollution for the semiconductor production process. This study is concerned with the removal of As(III) and As(V) with various kinds of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing CO32-, SO42-, Cl- and NO3- as interlayer anionic species. The anion exchange property is different from the kind of layered double hydroxides and the Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is superior in the anion exchange property of As(III) and As(V) due to the nature of nitrate ion existing in the interlayer. The pH condition suitable for As(V) removal is 7.1 or more. If the initial conditions such as 10mg/dm3 of As(V) concentration, 7.1 of pH, 1 m3 of amount of solution and 99 per cent of removal are fixed, the required amount of Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is 0.27kg for two step-batch operations. The As(III) is suitable to oxidize to As(V) before the removal processing.

Value added blasting is a process methodology that links tasks and processes, with the aim to improve/enhance the technical application of explosives technology and initiating systems, resulting in improved output. The phases and steps of a typical value added blasting intervention are discussed in this paper. Each step having distinct purposes, principles and methodology. The underlying philosophies and process steps of the programme are described for each step. This paper gives an account of projects that have been completed in two Anglo American Gold Mines. This will include a description of the projects that were conducted at Vaal Reefs 8 Shaft and Western Deep Levels South Mine covering: ? The need for blasting improvements ? The approach that was followed ? The result of the programme.

"Since 1997 the Institute of Mining Engineering 1 at the Aachen University is dealing with the concept of sustainable development in the mineral industries. During this time it has conducted several research projects in this field. Its latest project is on the development of sustainability indicators for the German mineral industry. This paper describes some results of this project. A process chain analyses have been carried out identifying economic, social and environmental effects of the minerals extraction. Thirty indicators reflecting the particular conditions in the mineral industry have been designed. One important challenge was the design of quantifiable indicators taking into account the life cycle of a mining operation as well as mineral beneficiation and enrichment of the raw material."

An account is given of the development of ferritic stainless steels since their discovery in the early years of this century. The alloys became very widely used in the 1950s, the market during that decade being driven strongly by a demand for automobile trim made of ferritic stainless steel. The production of ferritic stainless steel declined as a proportion of the total at the end of the 1950s as consumer preferences changed. However, the market is now growing strongly again, this time driven by a demand for oxidation-resistant alloys for motor-vehicle exhaust systems. The tonnages produced, applications, and market shares of the various alloys are discussed and compared. Trends in world stainless-steel production, product forms, technological development, and usage are examined.

The determinants of human behaviour are numerous and complex. Many scientific disci- plines focus on various processes which play some part in shaping the actions of individ- uals and groups. Behavioural science attempts to synthesise data produced by these investigations in an attempt to formulate principles by which people's thoughts, feelings and actions may be described, diagnosed, predicted and changed. While no comprehensive account of people and their reactions can be attempted in a brief paper a review of six principles does provide a framework within which managers can establish reliable knowledge applicable to all their subordinates and to themselves. This information may be used to arrange organizational environments and management practices which enable people to discover, release and increase their best intellectual, emotional and motivational capacities.

At periodic intervals-typically at the end of each month, quarter, and year- the accounting department in each division of a company distributes a set of reports to the division's managers. These reports describe the financial performance of the division and its major departments over the time period. They identify the revenues generated from the division's products and the costs incurred in their production. The results from individual departments are combined to determine divisional results, and the results from individual divisions are in turn consolidated to determine the results for the overall corporation. Cost reports for each of these activities show actual amounts, budgeted amounts, and the differences between the two. This reporting is carried out for the individual period and for the year to date.

A flotation model developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre was used to predict the performance of copper rougher and scavenger circuits at the copper concentrator at Mount Isa Mines. The model describes the kinetic response of an ore in a flotation cell in terms of ore floatability, cell characteristics and froth recovery. The floatability parameters of the rougher feed ore were obtained directly from a detailed plant survey. Flotation analysis was carried out for twenty different size-by-liberation classes to account for the effects of particle size and liberation on flotation. This paper investigates the capability of the model to predict the flotation behavior of 20 different size-by liberation classes in the rougher and the scavenger banks.

The bulk flotation behaviour of an industrial rougher bank has been determined with a view to characterising the size iepend ent behaviour of the identifiable nineral groups present. A relatively simple flotation model, based on first order kinetics and the assumption of perfect mixers in series ias been used to provide a fit to the operation of the cells. The adequacy of the model is discussed in relation to the characteristics of the ore and the size iependancy of the parameters. It is shown that improved fits are possible if the model accounts explicitly for this size dependancy and demonstrated how the model may be of use in prediction of the grade recovery relationships for different operating conditions as an aid to plant optimisation.

This paper is a survey of the various methods and research efforts by which the drivability of piles is determined. First, a brief outline of the basic theory and the important parameters for driving by vibration are presented. Then, a wide variety of methods by which the drivability of piles is determined are presented and discussed, with special emphasis on methods developed in the USSR. Each of these methods are examined as to how they take into account the various parameters of vibratory pile driving, such as eccentric moment, frequency, dynamic force, motor torque and power, vibrating and static weight, and other variables. Some relation of these methods of field data is presented as well.

We describe a new method of characterising the effect of dissolved materials on the rate of coalescence of bubbles in aqueous media. Single bubbles were allowed to rise to meet the surface of an aqueous solution, and the time of persistence between arrival and bursting of bubble was measured as a function of solute concentration. A laser beam was placed just above the surface of the liquid, with a detector in the light path, so that any disturbance at the surface could be seen as a break in the beam. The arrival of a bubble at the surface could be detected from the behaviour of the trace on an oscilloscope, and when the bubble broke, another significant change in the signal could easily be seen. The time between disruptions was reported as the persistence time. The effect of a homologous series of n-alcohols (C1 to C8) on the persistence time was measured, in aqueous solution. It was found that with increasing concentration of a particular solute, the persistence time increased up to a point, and then declined. However the magnitude of the persistence time was found to increase with increasing numbers of carbon atoms in the molecule. Bubbles of 1, 2 and 3 mm diameter were used. Persistence time increased with increasing bubble diameter, the maximum values observed being of order 100 secs. For a given solute, the persistence (drainage) time increased with increasing bubble diameter. The concentration Cmax at which the maximum persistence time was observed, was found to be independent of the bubble size. It decreased uniformly as the carbon number increased, and was well correlated by the function y1/2 (dy /dc) -2 I dc)-2 . There was no apparent correlation with the surface excess at maximum persistence time.

Equilibrium calculational software programs can be effectively utilized to model the importance of activity or concentration, solubility, temperature, solution pH, solution potential, and ligand complexation on extraction and recovery processes. Illustrative examples using the calculational program ST ABCAL for the creation of diagrams such as EwpH, activity or concentration-pH, and activity or concentration-EH are presented to demonstrate the fundamental characteristics of real hydrometallurgical mercury dissolution and recovery processes. An industrial application will include leaching of mercury from K 106 mercury sulfide waste and solution purification by iron cementation.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the absorption of radium and thorium from waste uranium leach liquor by clays and other materials. This work was conducted in support of the Bureau's goal of minimizing the environ¬mental conflicts, impacts, and occupational hazards Associated with mining and mineral processing operations. Tailings and soil samples from Wyoming and Utah were contacted with tailings liquors to determine the degree of absorp¬tion. Absorption ranged from 0 to 99 percent for radium and from 0 to 31 per¬cent for thorium. Some samples, which readily absorbed radium, were contacted with various salt solutions that could be present in tailings solutions to determine their effectiveness as desorbents. The desorption of radium ranged from 0.06 to 100 percent. An alpha-spectrometric method was used to determine the radium and thorium, concentrations in the solutions and the solids.

The mechanical properties of solid-solution-strengthened columbium alloys have been assessed as a function of alloying additions. Studies included the effects of tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, and vanadium. Elevated temperature fabrication was required at alloying levels above about 15 pct W or 10 pct Mo. Tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium additions increase tensile strength at room temperature and 2200°F, but tantalum additions exert little strengthening. Similarly, tungsten, molybdenum, and probably vanadium additions increase the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, and tantalum additions decrease this parameter. The 2200°F stress-rupture strength is increased by tungsten and molybdenum additions; with 20 to 25 at. pct additions, 100-hr rupture strengths of 30,000 psi are obtainable. Small vanadium additions exhibit mild stress-rupture strengthening, and tantalum additions are innocuous. At 2500°F, tungsten additions retain stress-rutpure strengthening capability, but molybdenum additions are much less effective. Tantalum additions augment the stress-rupture strengthening of tungsten plus molybdenum additions at 2500°F. Of the refractory metals, columbium possesses specific potential for structural use in the temperature range from 2000" to about 2500°F. Desirable features of columbium are its good low-temperature ductility, ease of fabrication, oxidation mechanics (lack of a volatile oxide at moderate temperatures), good availability and reserves, and relatively low density. However, alloying is required to provide attractive strength at elevated temperatures. Published information concerning alloying be- havior of columbium relative to mechanical properties is sketchy, particularly in consideration for long-time applications at temperatures in excess of 2000°F. Only a few stress-rupture data at temperatures from 2000" to 2500°F have been reported;'-' these are too meager to allow rationalization of the effects of various alloying additions on creep or stress-rupture properties. Additional published data do, however, give some insight toward understanding of systematic alloying behavior for columbium relative to low-temperature strength4-' and ductility,' and elevated temperature tensile behavior.4,6 This paper is intended to augment previous knowledge, and to promote understanding of the alloying behavior of columbium for long-time structural service at elevated temperature. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS Solid-solution strengthening is recognized to be of prime importance in improving strength in columbium-base alloys. Other strengthening mechanisms may be (and are, in current alloys) used to augment solid-solution strengthening. As strengthening results primarily from lattice distortion, the strengthening effectiveness per atom depends upon atomic size mismatch between solvent and solute. Another factor in this regard is conformance to ideal solution behavior in the solid solution. Thus, for example, despite appreciable differences in the degree of mismatch between tungsten (5 pct), molybdenum (5 1/2 pct), and vanadium (7 1/2 pct) in solution in columbium, all are about equally effective in straining the columbium lattice at room temperature.'-' Similarly, tantalum additions do not strain the columbium lattice, and little strengthening is expected. Size effects being equal, maximum solution strengthening at high temperatures is anticipated to result from the addition of elements that increase the melting temperature of columbium. This expectation is based on an increase in the electronic bonding forces exhibited in the transition metal series as electronic structures approach those of the Group Vl metals. Thin, heavily doped n-type layers of GaSb have been grown on p-type GaSb substrates. Techniques have been developed for the growth of the n-type layers from a tellurium-doped gallium-rich solution. The solution used consists of 95 at. pct Ga and 5 at. pct Sb. The process consists of immersing the p-type wafer in the solution at a temperature slightly above the liquidus temperature, holding briefly to permit dissolution of the substrate surface, then decreasing the temperature to a value slightly below the liquidus to obtain 1 HE resistivity of n-type GaSb varies linearly with applied hydrostatic pressure, while the resistivity of p-type GaSb is insensitive to such pressure.1,2 The growth. Growth from a solution of GaSb in tin will also be described. In either case the substrate is clamped to a shelf at one end of a graphite boat, and immersion of the wafer and subsequent decanting of the solution is accomplished simply by tilting the furnace. The process is useful for the formation of p-n junctions in III-V compounds and has the advantage that the problems normally associated with diffusion of Group VI elements are not present. Layers up to 4.0 mils in thickness have been grown by the process. material therefore should be useful in a hydrostatic pressure-sensing device. A practical hydrostatic pressure sensor, however, requires the fabrication of GaSb sensing elements of several hundred ohms resistance. Attempts were made to prepare such elements by diffusion, taking advantage of the high sheet resistance of the thin diffused layers and depending upon the p-n junction to provide isolation from the base layer. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2016 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY), and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2016 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2016 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash) and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2016 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data and government-funded exploration activities."

Selected voltammograms in tetraborate buffer solutions in the presence of ethyl xanthate or isopropyl xanthate at pH 9.3, for chalcocite, covellite, chalcopyrite, and enargite mineral electrodes, are presented. The concept of critical Eh of dixanthogen condensation (Ehc) is introduced, and the line of Ehc is thermodynamically defined in plots of log [X i] vs Eh, for methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl xanthates. A reaction scheme of xanthate oxidation in four steps, involving the dixanthogen condensation step, is proposed. A first attempt to interpret mineral flotation from a more general point of view is made. The electrochemical mechanism of dixanthogen formation and condensation is considered as a particular case of a more general and relevant phenomenon, which is the decomposition of the collector giving hydrophobic colloidal forms, whose associative behavior in bulk solution and at the mineral/solution interface is governed by colloid chemistry.

After a brief review of the various hydrocarbon storage methods currently being utilized and statistics on underground hydrocarbon storage, this paper will briefly describe the technology involved in solution mining salt to create caverns of engineered shape and size and briefly discuss the economical and environmental advantages of hydrocarbon storage in solution-mined salt caverns. Other possible uses of salt caverns will be mentioned.

CHEMICAL PRECIPITATION U.S. 4,067,789 - Removal of soluble manganous ions from a zinc sulfate solution formed by leaching roasted zinc sulfide ore with spent electrolyte. An excess of ammonium persulfate or like oxidant is added to the leach solution to convert manganese to insoluble, filterable gamma-manganese dioxide, and the precipitate separated from the solution by filtration.
