In leaching copper ores knowledge of the rate of dissolution of the copper minerals and of the impurities is desirable. With knowledge of these two factors and data as to what minerals are present in the ore the metallurgist has an excellent start on planning a leach¬ing cycle to fit that ore. The rate of dissolution is rather difficult to predict, and the time required to leach a given ore may differ markedly from that required by another ore. The whole study as related to mixed oxidized and sulphide ores is one of relative rates of dissolution of the different copper minerals and the impurities in sulphuric acid and in ferric sulphate. The aim of leaching is to choose a cycle and strength of solvents to ex¬tract a maximum amount of copper and a minimum of impurities. The consumption of reagents per unit of copper dissolved is a function of the strength of the reagents used and the relative rates of attack on copper minerals and impurities. An opportunity may exist of ob¬taining the kind of electrolyte wanted for electrolytic precipitation and yet of saving on the consumption of reagents by modifying the strength of ferric sulphate and of sulphuric acid during the cycle to fit the time needed for dissolving the sulphide and oxidized minerals present. Former papers have considered the rate of dissolution of azurite, malachite, tenorite, chrysocolla, cuprite, chalcocite, boruite, and covellite in common leaching solvents. A paper soon to be written will consider some of the less important copper minerals. The present paper considers the rate of dissolution of copper from ores of the Southwest in sulphuric acid of varying strength and the ratio of sulphuric acid consumed to copper dis¬solved. In this study two ores containing the copper principally in an oxidized condition were used. This paper summarizes the research effort that was conducted as part of a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Mining Research Center and the Pittston Company. The objective of this investigation was to further the understanding of the floor heave ground control problems that have plagued underground mining of the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia. Floor heave is both economically and structurally undesirable. Floor heave is accompanied by a redistribution of stresses and loads that are associated with an underground opening. This redistribution of stresses may cause roof or pillar problems that otherwise would not have occurred. The floor heave that occurs in the Beckley coalbed is not cons1dered to be caused by "squeezing" or plastic flow of the materials involved. The "squeezing" type floor heave is normally associated with relatively weak floor members that contain significant amounts of clay mineralization. The floor members in the Beckley coalbed are competent, relatively strong materials which fail in a manner that can best be described by the term "buckling." This buckling-type failure is indirectly related to the time-dependent deformation properties of the materials involved, but is considered to be more of a slender column, or panel, type failure than a "squeeze" or "flow"-related failure. The Beckley coalbed has had a history of floor heave ground control problems. The Glen Rogers mine, which opened in the 1920's, experienced extensive floor heave. In a report dated April 1929, James P. Keatley of the West Virginia State Department of Mines described the floor heave in the Glen Rogers mine. Several observations listed in the Glen Rogers report that appear to be consistent with current observations follow: 1. Water plays no apparent part in the floor heave process. 2. No evidence of gas has been found in the floor. 3. The thickness of the overburden, which varies from 183 to 396 m (600 to 1300 ft), has no relationship to the floor heave. In the conclusions of the 1929 report on the Glen Rogers mine, Keatley states, "A statement in brief as to the cause (of floor heave) would lie that an undetermined natural condition doubtless augmented by former and present mining methods causes the bottom to heave." As this report will show, Mr. Keatley's insight into the problem was most accurate. The "undetermined natural condition" is the existence of a biaxial, horizontal, compressive stress field. This stress field is in excess of that which would be expected from gravity loading. This stress field and the material properties of the floor rock combine to cause the floor heave that has been experienced. The floor heave that occurs in the Beckley seam generally occurs as arching, with a tension fracture, near the center of the floor span or as a break near the rib followed by vertical deflection (of the floor) at the rib and sloping of the floor across the entry. Examples of the floor heave are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The two types of floor heave are merely different manifestations of the same basic failure mechanism. When the entries experiencing floor heave were identified on a map of the mine under investigation, it was apparent that there was a relationship between the floor heave and the direction of the entries. The main entries, which are used for ventilation and haulage, experienced the majority of the floor heave. This directional relationship suggested a directionally related loading mechanism, or more specifically, a biaxial, horizontal stress field that exceeds what would be expected by gravity loading. Since the main entries were oriented at a bearing of N25oW, it was hypothesized that the maximum compressive component of the horizontal stress field was at 90° to these entries or at a bearing of N65oE. An in Situ testing program was developed to test this hypothesis and investigate the floor heave problem.

In 1987 the control strategies at the then ZC Mines' New Broken Hill Consolidated concentrator were a miscellaneous mixture of computer hardware and technology for ISA, grinding and residue thickener control. Field instrumentation was based on current-to-air technology of approximately the 1960s. Decisions were made to rationalise computer and field instrumentation technologies; the object being to consolidate control loops into one system to enable expansion of the system to include all facets of plant operation. The first stage was to install a DEC Micro PDP 11/23 computer and serial line communication as recommended by AMDEL Ltd, for the ISA system, as discussed by Walsh and Freeman (1988). The second stage was to select and install a distributed control system for the centralisation of the control loops into one system, and to replace field instrumentation with state-of-the-art technology. This paper deals with the second stage of the rationalisation, in an attempt to give an insight into what is required when personnel are faced with such a decision, details of costs involved in keeping a system functioning and utilised; and the requirement to train personnel for acceptance of further control strategies.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers, mounted in suspension components, can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a global positioning system (GPS) is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck. This research is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) project called "Engineering controls for reduction of jolting/jarring injuries in surface mines." NIOSH is investigating how the work environment of haulage truck drivers can be improved. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that, between 1986 and 1995, 60% of the back injuries were to haulage truck drivers in metal/nonmetal surface mining. Personnel from Phelps Dodge suggested that combining acceleration data with information obtained from a GPS could generate results with a variety of uses. Therefore, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) began investigating how to tie acceleration and GPS data together. It was originally thought that this tool would be used primarily for road and truck maintenance. However, as research progressed, it became apparent that it would also be useful in providing feedback about equipment operations and identifying unusual causes of jolting. Experimental approach Available components that function well by themselves were linked for the purpose of proof of concept. Using a Modular Mining Systems (MMS) product called Vital Signs, SRL researchers took an Aero-Marine Products (AMP) acceleration recorder and hardwired it to MMS Dispatch equipment already installed on a truck. AMP is one of several manufacturers of acceleration recorders frequently used to monitor freight during shipping. MMS Dispatch is used for production accounting and truck dispatching and uses GPS tracking. Through Vital Signs, an analog or digital alarm signal can be recorded. Steve Rhoades, of MMS, wrote unique code that links the Vitals Signs data and GPS location and stores this data in an ASCII log file. SRL researchers installed the equipment in a Caterpillar 793 haul truck. The result was a working prototype. Figures 1 and 2 show the instrument installation in the truck. MAGNESIUM metal, with a specific gravity of 1.73, is two-thirds the weight of aluminium and one-quarter that of steel. It is the lightest metal which is stable in the atmosphere. Before the war it had begun, though somewhat slowly, to take a place among the established metals. In 1939, magnesium production on this continent amounted to some 3,000 tons per annum and was confined to one company. At that time, Germany produced perhaps 20,000 tons. The advent of war, however, increased the demand to fantastic heights and introduced production problems of unprecedented magnitude. By the end of 1943, North American production is expected to reach 300,000 tons per annum (1), an increase of one hundredfold. Such a rate of expansion has not been witnessed previously in the history of metallurgy. It has given the metallurgist an opportunity to try new production methods and to learn in a short time what might otherwise have taken many years. The metallurgy of magnesium is still in its formative years and at this time widely different production methods are in operation side by side. This paper will discuss these methods in so far as information is available for publication at this time. A general description of the new Canadian industry will be included.

This paper reports on research examining disclosures from mining companies regarding their water usage in the Macquarie and Lachlan catchment areas, both parts of the Murray-Darling Basin in New South Wales, Australia. The objective of the research was to assess whether this disclosure is sufficient to allow communities to determine whether mining companies are complying with mining conditions of consent and abiding by the requirements of their water licencing agreements. These requirements are then compared to the water reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Water Accounting Framework for the Minerals Industry (WAFMI). Communities are concerned about whether the mining industry?s use of water will have impacts on their livelihoods and lifestyle and thus require information concerning the quantity of water that will be extracted, how much water will be left for other stakeholders and whether the mining will affect water quality. This is an archival study. It has involved examining relevant publically available information released by mining companies and government regulators and determining if this is sufficient to meet the needs of the local communities. Additionally, it has involved looking at information indirectly provided by mining companies, via the use of intermediaries. Further, information availability concerning basic water accounting and regulatory breeches and whether such information is available at the mine site level has been considered. It is found that while NSW legislation places very little reporting requirements on mining companies, the development consent conditions for new projects and extensions to existing projects are quite significant and should be sufficient to meet the needs of local catchment residents though such information is not always easily accessible for the layperson.

The best procedure consisted of ball-mill grinding and double classification, which gave a properly sized sand containing less iron than the feed.

Many flotation plants use pH to adjust the pulp chemistry of their system to achieve optimum separation. For example, in a sequential lead/zinc circuit the pH during sphalerite flotation is increased to 10.5 or greater to depress galena and pyrite, thereby improving selectivity for sphalerite. However, maintaining a pulp at a particular pH value does not necessarily provide the operator with an abundance of information regarding the chemistry changes occurring within a plant. This paper provides the reader with a number of pulp chemical observations in several plants, showing that the same trends are noted over time; however, the magnitude of the measured values do change. Further, the changes in magnitude are invariably associated with a change in mineralogy. Thus, is measuring pH enough? Can the Eh, dissolved oxygen and temperature be measured at the industrial scale reliably? And, are these measurements useful?

The deterioration of highway and bridge infrastructure has received considerable attention in recent years because of the billions of dollars needed for repair and rehabilitation. A major factor contributing to this problem is the corrosion of steel reinforcement. Reinforcing steels with good corrosion resistance and relatively low price are therefore essential for maintenance, cost reduction and service-life extension of the steel-reinforced structures. This article describes the development of low-alloying steels that offers good corrosion resistance with reasonably low cost. Topics include steel microstructures, mechanical properties, corrosion performance, industrial applications and economic aspects.

Recent updates to Australian industry guidelines emphasise the importance of the assessment of liquefaction potential of tailings. This includes assessment of the cyclic liquefaction potential, and the post-seismic strength of tailings expected to undergo strength loss from seismic loading. Despite this increase in focus, a relatively small number of Australian tailings appear to have been characterised through cyclic and post-cyclic testing. This paper presents the cyclic characterisation of four Australian tailings, consisting of iron ore, lateritic nickel, vanadium and bauxite residue. Material was obtained either from surficial tube sampling or through remoulding samples in the laboratory from slurries. Testing consisted of monotonic, cyclic and post-cyclic tests for each material. For three of the materials, laboratory-scale shear vane testing was also performed to provide a comparison to post-cyclic strengths from direct simple shear.The results indicated cyclic resistances consistent with the results of other tailings presented in the literature. The lateritic nickel tailings provided the greatest cyclic resistance of the four materials tested, followed by the vanadium tailings. This was somewhat consistent with expectations for material behaviour based on index properties. Post-cyclic strengths were seen to decrease as cyclic strains increased, consistent with typical observations in the literature. Following significant cyclic straining, in some instances the post-cyclic strengths approached those obtained through residual shear vane testing. This provides further insight into the strain-dependent nature of post-cyclic strengths for some materials. Increased environmental regulations and pressures have created changing and new demands for tailings management strategies in a variety of mining applications. Critical among these items is the disposal of tailings as the pursuit of increased yields and lower costs have driven the application of different process technologies. With a number of technologies having a niche application focus, the belt filter press has been utilised for decades as a cost-effective and versatile option for dewatering different types of mineral tailings and other waste process streams. One of the critical advantages of the belt filter press is the technology’s ability to adapt and work in numerous plant designs, operating conditions and applications. As permitting and disposal options have become more stringent, plant designers, operators and equipment suppliers must develop comprehensive and site-specific economic, design and process evaluation techniques to ensure proper equipment selection and system design for belt filter presses or any other dewatering technologies. This paper will explore these techniques in relation to belt filter presses (with reference to other technologies) in a variety of different applications, along with other considerations to ensure a successful tailings dewatering system and disposal design. Summaries of equipment performance characteristics, operating and maintenance strategies and optimisation techniques will also be addressed in conjunction with the belt filter press’s adaptability to different plant designs and the resulting tailings characteristics.CITATION:Fenzel, M S, 2015. In its search for additional ways to increase understanding of rock behavior, the Twin Cities Mining Research Center has turned to the scanning electron microscope, an instrument rapidly finding application in research concerned with surfaces of materials. Since features indicative of the manner in which rocks fail may be recorded on the surfaces of fragments as disintegration proceeds, this microscope might be used as a tool for seeking and mapping these minute features. In pursuit of such features, we chose to scan a portion of the fracture surface from a quartzite disk compressively loaded to failure between two pins centered along the disk's axis. The resultant fracture appeared as a rough, diametric plane, and the fracture surface near one of the loading points was scanned with the microscope.

The economics of the producer-consumer interface - the route from mine to market - impact much more severely on specialty industrial minerals, extender/fillers that have to be sold, than on commodity industrial minerals that are basically supplied. Working capital costs for inventories and accounts receivable, fixed capital costs for storage/ warehousing/distribution, and sales and marketing costs all make the extender/filler producer much more of a marketer than a miner. The future survival of an extender/filler producer will primarily depend on the skill he has in the economics of the interface.

Remediation of small-arms firing ranges is being investigated by the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Scheduled closures of military installations, as well as the management of active ranges, require the development of methodologies for heavy metals removal to prevent their entering the surrounding environment. The impact berms contain high concentrations of metals, and the soil and vegetation surrounding the berms were found to have slightly elevated levels. The heavy metals characterized are in the form of whole bullets, a wide size distribution of free fragments, smeared lead on the surface of the soil grains, and very finely attached particles. Gravity beneficiation can remove liberated metal contamination effectively. Weak acetic acid leaching shows promise in lowering the final metal contamination to allow the ,soil to pass the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) criteria.

This risk management approach is based on probabilistic risk assessment and established decision analysis techniques, and appropriately considers the relationships among various mine development decisions, tradeoffs among consequences, the uncertainty in predicting consequences, and the benefits of flexibility to respond to changed conditions.

"The adsorption of collector on bornite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on bornite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. This adsorption mechanism is very similar to the one obtained with chalcocite/xanthate system. However, the result also clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on bornite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. The obtained AFM images also showed that the adsorption increases with increasing the collector’s concentration. When Cytec Aerofloat 238, a dialkyl dithiophosphate collector, is used, it adsorb on bornite mainly in the form of an oily substance, which can be rinsed off mineral surface by flushing with ethanol alcohol. AFM images also show that the adsorption of Cytec Aerofloat 238 increases with increasing the adsorption time. INTRODUCTION The adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) Compared to other copper minerals such as chalcopyrite and chalcocite, much less work has been done to study the adsorption collector on bornite. Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of bornite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on bornite was cuprous alkyl xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Buckley et al. (1984) investigated the surface oxidation of bornite by linear potential sweep voltammetry and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and proposed the adsorption products on bornite depended on the solution potential. Zachwieja et al. (1987) studied the electrochemical flotation of the bornite-ethylxanthate system and reported that KEX reacted with bornite through an electrochemical oxidation reaction forming cuprous xanthate between -0.4 and -0.2v (SCE). Hangone et al. (2005) studied the flotation of a bornite-rich copper sulfide ore using thio collectors and their mixtures and reported that the highest copper recoveries were obtained with the diethyl dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP)."

"A description is given of a series of tests performed to determine the comparative effects which dynamic and static straining, in compression, have on the physical strength properties of mild steel and an aluminum alloy. The dynamic deformation was imposed during the passage of single stress pulses of about 100 micro-second duration. These pulses were recorded with strain gauges mounted near both ends of the specimen. The resulting records were analysed using a simple wave theory; there from the dynamic stress-strain curves for the respective metals were deter-mined and were then compared with the static stress-strain relation. The respective hardnesses of the metals after deformation are evaluates by means of static stress-strain curves in compression. The micro-structures of the metals before and after deformation are also shown. It is observed that dynamic de-formation considerably modifies the rate of strain hardening. This modified hardening appears to be persistent. The observed differences in physical strength properties and micro-structures are discussed in the light of the accepted dislocation theory for metals."

"Unnecessarily restrictive specifications could be limiting the cost effectiveness of deep mixing (DM) applications and therefore limiting use of DM on projects where there are other options. Excessively restrictive standards demanded for strength and permeability certainly increase contractors’ bid prices, and costing the owners and, in the case of Government projects, the taxpayers more than necessary. Yet, lax or ineffective specifications often exist for some vital components of the quality assurance and quality control. In this paper, specifications for key elements of DM design and construction are examined. Recommendations are made to improve and streamline DM specifications to better serve the common objective of constructing a safe and cost effective ground improvement project.INTRODUCTIONSpecifications should, at their best, convey the project design requirements and provide clear direction to the contractor regarding requirements for submittals, materials, execution, measurement, schedule, and other aspects as necessary. The specifications should not be overly conservative, restrictive or ambiguous, and they absolutely should not be deficient in measurement of quality. Guide specifications or recycled sections from previous projects often form the template for new project specifications. But standards that appear in guide specifications or from former successful construction should be critically scrutinized by the designer for relevance before using the copy/paste functions of the specifications writer’s keyboard. Because work does not always go as smoothly as planned, specifications for remediation of non-compliant construction should be clearly stated and enforced. Often, non-compliancy is reviewed after-the-fact and deemed to have met the design intent, indicating that either the specifications were too restrictive or the enforcement too weak.The Federal Highway Administration Design Manual: Deep Mixing for Embankment and Foundation Support, October 2013, was written by a panel of DM expert design practitioners and contractors. Guide specifications are included as Appendix C of the FHWA manual. Those guide specifications have been updated in the deep mixing section of the www.GeoTechTools.org website, and the updated specifications represent the most complete and authoritative compilation published to date. Although the specifications for DM at www.GeoTechTools.org are current and complete, and they portray the state-ofthe- practice, they too must be modified to fit specific DM applications, project needs, and site conditions. The keys to a good set of specifications are to prescribe construction only to the level that is required to meet the design intent, to require appropriate quality control and quality assurance (QC/ QA) activities, and to clearly address remedial measures required for non-compliant work."

"The Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, is investigating the preparation of pulverized coal for fuel. In this study the relative amount of surface in various products and samples had to be assessed. Because of the familiarity with screens and because of the simplicity of using the inverse ratio of the opening for ascertaining the amount of relative surface in the respective sizes, screens down to and including 270-mesh were used. This choice was made in full cognizance of the irregularity of screens, but it seemed that if the same screens were used throughout all the tests the relative values would be satisfactory.In dealing with the subsieve sizes, pneumatic elutriation was used to make several fractions to extend the sizing analysis into the range of hypothetical screens. This kind of a sizing analysis was thought necessary because it is familiar to all operators, and, furthermore, it is amenable to several ways of plotting curves that bring out the characteristics of various coals and various methods of grinding.The method of obtaining the data from which to set up the hypothetical screen scale is the subject of this paper. It consists in determining the average projected area of the particles in the respective elutriated products. By extending the ""area method"" to sieve sizes, a factor is found that may be applied to the subsieve sizes, and thus the scale is projected in a regular manner. This method avoids contentions about specific surface and steers clear of ""average diameter"" except as material sized on screens may be said to have an average diameter."
