The past several decades have seen the rapid expansion of multinational mining companies? exploration and production activities around the globe. This trend has resulted from a number of factors, including increased demand for resources as a result of worldwide economic growth, the diminishment of known and proven reserves, rising commodity prices, technology improvements, and the liberalization of investment regimes in developing countries with significant natural resources. With those opportunities, however, come associated risks and significantly increased legal compliance obligations that may be imposed by various bodies. That includes domestic regulations, as well as foreign civil and criminal laws with extraterritorial reach. A failure to adhere to those laws can have dire consequences, including substantial monetary fines and penalties, severe damage to a company?s reputation, and even jail time for individual company employees.

On July 30, 1979 New Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the decade-old National Environmental Policy Act went into effect. These new regulations replace approximately seventy different sets of agency regulations, providing some uniformity throughout the Federal government in the conduct of environmental reviews and preparation of environmental impact statements (EIS). This attempt by the Federal government at a general improvement in the preparation and quality of EIS's presents an opportunity for the mining industry to evaluate how the EIS process for mining proposals can be expedited. The environmental impact statement is often a key element on the critical path of a major mining project. Preparation of the EIS is ordinarily the responsibility of the Federal agency with primary decision-making authority over the project. Still, the proponent, i.e. the mining company, can play a major role in the process and have a major impact on the timeliness and adequacy of the effort. Typically, the Proponent will conduct (or will hire consultants to conduct) environmental baseline studies of, for example, air quality, wildlife, geology, water quality, vegetation and archaeology. These studies are then compiled into an environmental report and submitted to the agency. The agency verifies the data and incorporates them into the environmental impact statement.

The unprecedented demand for capital investment in the mining industry today has intensified management's interest in every known technique which will help to reduce operating costs and increase production. One proven approach leading to the accomplishment of this objective is well known in the mining industry and is gaining added prestige, particularly where keen competitive conditions exist. This approach is in the area of incentives applied to mining productivity. An investigation of many incentive plans now in use throughout the mining industry revealed a predominant number of conventional type plans, Most of these plans are designed to reward the hourly-paid employee on the basis of percent over and above a standard hourly or daily ton rate, By contrast, this search failed to divulge any incentive plan solely and independently developed for production management employees. This does not mean that such plans in the mining industry are nonexistnet, but it does indicate that production management incentive systems are scarce or are being kept under wraps.

A new analytical approach for characterizing and improving the performance of ball milling is presented. Individual ball mill circuit design and operating variables can be related to overall circuit performance through two distinct parameters for classification and breakage. The ball mill circuit functional performance equation is presented. Applications in the industrial plant and in the research field are discussed.

Flotation recovery in geometallurgical modelling is usually predicted based on relationships developed from batch flotation testing of different ore types. These batch flotation tests are usually performed at a constant set of operating conditions and at a fixed feed grind size P80. Usually the laboratory feed grind P80 is that which is expected to be produced in the full-scale flotation circuit for that particular ore type.Flotation recovery will be a strong function of the valuable mineral particle size distribution, with lower recovery of ultra-fines due to poor flotation kinetics, optimum recovery for the intermediate sized particles and lower recovery for the coarser particles due to poorer liberation of this fraction. This valuable mineral particle size distribution is not characterised by the solids P80 parameter alone. The proportion of material in each class will also be a function of the slope of the size distribution and the degree of preferential grinding of the valuable mineral in comparison to the total mass of the ore.This paper will demonstrate (through example) how these other size distribution parameters can change with a change in grinding technology, the size and operating conditions used in a grinding unit and the characteristics of the classification technology used in conjunction with the grinding unit. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate how this can result in these parameters being very different in laboratory testing to that produced in the full-scale comminution circuit. A rule of thumb that laboratory rod milling rather than ball milling produces a size distribution most similar to that of the full-scale grinding circuit will be challenged. These differences can result in a significant change in flotation recovery. It is therefore important to consider these parameters when developing a laboratory geometallurgical program, to enable more accurate prediction of the flotation recoveries that will be achieved in the full-scale process.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E and Jankovic, A, 2013. The Bureau of Mines investigated the in situ vertical component of the rock stress in the rib of the haulage drift on the 6100-level of the Star mine, Burke, Idaho, using the flatjack and borehole deformation methods. The estimate of the vertical component of stress about 2 feet into the rib at a station along the haulage drift on the 6100-level of the Star mine by the flatjack method is approximately 5,875 psi, whereas the borehole deformation procedure at this station yielded a value of 5,500 psi for the same depth into the rib. The test zone is approximately 5,625 feet below the surface.No attempt was made to extrapolate stress estimates beyond the depth of the flatjack installation.

In 2010, Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s operations commenced the planning and design of a sampling and analysis system for the new 50 Mt/a Cape Lambert Port B (CLB) facility. Current sampling systems at the ports consist of automated robotic, mass-based sampling protocols employed at Dampier, and semi-automated, time-based sampling systems operating at Cape Lambert Port A.The new sampling system at CLB has brought together a fully automated sampling and analysis system utilising time-based sampling, with the capacity to sample ore products of medium quality variation as defined in ISO 3082 (ISO, 2009). The CLB system is required to sample at shiploading rates from 6000 t/h to 13 440 t/h and provide full load-port analysis. The sampling approach is to proportionally extend primary increments (of varying mass relative to shiploading rate) to a standard length using variable speed aero-belt conveyor systems. This enables a fixed number of secondary cuts to be achieved for all primary increment masses and to be delivered to the automated cell. The cell is required to be capable of concurrently processing four individual shipments, each containing multiple cargoes.Achieving the target sampling precision for all export cargo sizes has culminated in the planning, design and construction of the largest automated iron ore port laboratory in the world. The CLB sampling and analysis cell was commissioned in Q3 and Q4 2013. Kennecott's Ray Mines Division (RMD) is located in central Arizona. The pit and silicate plants are located at Ray while the 27,500 tpd concentrating facilities are located at Hayden, approximately 20 miles away from the pit. Ore is delivered in 100 ton railroad cars, 60 cars per train via the Copper Basin Railroad. The side discharge cars are dumped into a 6,000 ton trackhopper. There are 6 Nico feeders, two per belt. Three 48" belts transport the -8" ore to three 7' standard (secondary) Nordberg crushers. Each crusher is preceded by a 6' x 12' Tyler double deck screen. The secondary crushers are open circuit. The -1/21t material from the screens is transported directly to the fine ore bin at the mill. The discharge from the crushers and the intermediate product -2 1/411 x +1/2" is conveyed to a surge bin. The tertiary crusher feeder belts discharge onto five 61 x 161 Tyler double deck screens, each followed by a 7' shorthead (tertiary) Nordberg crusher in closed circuit. The -1/2" product joins the -1/2" ore from the secondary crushers and both are conveyed along a 42", 4,230 foot long belt to the fine ore bin that feeds the grinding circuits. When hard ore is experienced at the concentrator the daily throughput decreases by up to 10%. This coupled with the fact that the ore is generally becoming harder with mine depth provided the incentive to improve the performance at the crushing plant.

Zinc mining at Jefferson City began in 1854 with small scale production of oxidized ore from open pits. Significant production began in 1913 with the development of the Mascot Mine by the American Zinc Company. In 1965, four flotation mills were treating crude ore at the rate of about 12,000 tons per day and the Mascot-Jefferson City district currently is the largest zinc producing area in the United States. The producing mines, Mascot, Young, North Friends Station, New Market Zinc, Grasselli, Davis-Bible, Coy, and the Jefferson City, are 15 to 28 miles northeast of Knoxville in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province, an area of gentle relief lying between the more rugged Great Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland escarpment. The ore is strata bound, occurring essentially within a stratigraphic range of 200 feet in the Lower Kingsport and Upper Longview formations of Lower Ordovician age. In the lower strata of the mineralized section, the ore generally is found in coarsely crystalline elastic dolomite breccia containing silica and chert debris within a sequence of aphanitic limestones. The upper strata of the mineralized section are fine-grained primary dolomites that, in the ore zones, have been fragmented in mosaic patterns by solution collapse with the interfragmental space filled by white gangue dolomite and sphalerite. The mineralogy is unusually simple, sphalerite being the only important sulfide. Pyrite is very sparse. Dolomite gangue is abundant, silica was deposited in quite small amounts, calcite is minor, and fluorite and barite are very rare. The principal ore controlling structures are rubble breccia zones that were formed during the post-Lower Ordovician-pre-Middle Ordovician erosion interval by supergene solution as a phase of the development of a regional karst system of underground drainage that extended to' depths of at least 800 feet. The major Appalachian orogenic structures are post-ore and have been superimposed on the ore bodies. There is substantial evidence to support the current thinking of the writers that the ore deposits were formed at a depth not exc1~eding 800 feet.

The Black River Falls Mine is owned and operated by Jackson County Iron Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Inland Steel Company. It is located in vest central Wisconsin, seven miles east of the city of Black River Falls. This is the first taconite plant in the state of Wisconsin. Iron mining started in this area in 1856 but soon failed due to the low grade ore and crude methods of mining and transportation. Inland Steel Company acquired the property in 1939. Some drilling and test work was done in 1940, but the economics of developing the property at that time were not favolable. Improved methods of concentrating and pelletizing in the 1960's made it possible to build the present plant. Due to the limited ore reserve of 45,000,000 tons with expected recovery of 33% it was necessary to limit the capacity of the operation to 750,000 TPY with a life of 20 years. There was some concern about an operation of such limited capacity. A million ton operation was considered the minimum size plant for a profitable operation.

"INTRODUCTION The first ten papers of the series on smelting in the lead blast furnace described the operation at the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, Utah, and at the plant of the Bunker Hill Smelting Co., Kellogg, Idaho, which handled a very rich lead concentrate. These previous papers may be considered a picture of the traditional lead smelter treating custom ores and of the smelter that will treat the type of product likely to be made in the future - lead concentrates of an increasingly rich grade.The great plant at Trail is of special interest to those smelting lead products containing much zinc and faced with the necessity of transforming all of their byproducts into commodities which may be sold profitably. The plant is equipped to produce electrolytic zinc, lead, copper, silver, bismuth, and cadmium. Part of the sulphur evolved from treating the ores is converted into sulphuric acid. Complete fertilizers for agricultural purposes are also produced.The smelter of lead ores has long considered that zinc is one of the most difficult ingredients that he has to handle. Even with the gretat improvement in flotation practice today, the residues from electrolytic zinc plants leaching zinc concentrates must still be smelted for their lead content. Of the total gangue material not separated from the lead concentrate sent to the smelter, zinc is still one of the most notable in percentage. The most successful way of coordinating the over-all operations of a concentrator, an electrolytic zinc plant, and a smelter provided with a plant for re-treating the blast-furnace slag for its lead and zinc content must be of interest to many treating complex ores.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe data in this paper were collected in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, and its entire technical staff. Como ejemplo, se analiza el caso del cofinanciamiento de la obra “Mejoramiento del sistema de agua para consumo humano del anexo Pueblo Nuevo”, que benefició a 195 familias con un servicio de agua de calidad las 24 horas del día. De este modo, se corrigió una fuente de conflictos sociales y se materializó una alianza para el desarrollo local entre la mediana minería y la minería artesanal. Por su parte, Asociación Pataz entregó certificados de donación, deducibles del Impuesto a la Renta, a los aportantes.

IN the summer of 1934, gold was discovered on Lodge bay, on the north shore of lake Athabaska in northern Saskatchewan, about fifty miles east of the Alberta boundary line. The first claims were taken up by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, and there was a 'rush' to locate similar showings. Staking continued through the summer and succeeding winter, and in the spring of 1935 the provincial government established a recording office at a convenient point which is central to the more important holdings and where 'planes can land in any weather. During the past summer, the name of this townsite was changed from Beaverlodge to Goldfields, and a post office was established here. The season was one of great activity; a great deal of assessment and development work was carried out and a large amount of further prospecting done. In addition to the work by private companies, geological investigation was carried out in the region by a Federal Geological Survey party under the charge of the writer and a reconnaissance examination was made of an area of some 7,000 square miles surrounding the region of particular interest. Though this was the first discovery of gold in the region it was not the first occasion that prospecting had been carried out along the north side of lake Athabaska. Over twenty years ago, a number of prospectors were at work in the area and a large number of claims were staked, many of which were never recorded. One man by the name of Piché, in the years 1910, 1912, and 1913, took up a considerable number of claims north of Pine Channel narrows, east of Fond du Lac. His discoveries, which consisted of small showings of sulphides in sedimentary gneiss, proved to be of no economic importance. In 1915, a sudden widespread interest was aroused by the report that a sample of ore collected near Fond du Lac had yielded a very high assay in silver. In March and April of that year, prospectors began to rush into the field by dog teams to take up claims, and, as soon as the Athabaska river was free of ice, others started by boat from Athabaska Landing. Some hundreds of claims were staked and recorded in the Dominion Land Office at Edmonton or at Fort Smith. By July, most of the prospectors had? left the region, having failed to find any silver ore. In 1921, considerable prominence was given to the area a few miles east of Goldfields by reports that very large masses of iron ore were available there. Claims were taken up, but the material is much too low grade to be considered commercial ore.

"Severe drilling conditions and difficult mud problems are briefly out-lined as the major cost items in all production operations. The chief problems discussed are abnormal pressures, high temperature, trouble-some shales, and low rates of penetration. These problems have been eliminated or greatly reduced in many areas by• the proper application of recently developed drilling mud products and techniques. These severe problems and their solutions are discussed generally: the application of high-density weighting materials to overcome abnormal pressures; surfactant muds with sodium polyacrylate as a solution for deep and high-temperature drilling; shale control muds and new dispersants for severe shale problems; and low-solids emulsions and •extreme-pressure lubricants for greatly improved rates of penetration."

Neutron activation analysis for mineral identification has attracted the attention of numerous investigators, judging from the publications on this subject in the past few years. 1-9 The appealing aspect of this method of mineral analysis is its proven sensitivity in the laboratory. In principle, activation analysis is one of the few petro-physical methods whereby a direct analysis for a mineral itself is possible in a borehole. The successful application of activation analysis requires the use of particular neutron reactions, measurement of selected gamma-ray energy intervals, and optimum bombardment and detection times. For copper analysis, Labanov et al., 10,11 using a low-energy PuBe source, reported an acceptable logging means. On the other hand, Pradzynski12, in analyzing ores and process tailings, used high-energy neutrons and photons for surface measurements of process samples. The work of Labanov et al. was based on measuring the rate of decay of the activated copper and hence was not as definitive as might be desired. Equipment is commercially available to carry out activation studies in the field 13,14 Gamma-ray spectra can be successfully transmitted over ordinary logging cables and, with borehole high-energy neutron accelerators and lower-energy chemical neutron sources, a variety of neutron activation methods can be studied. The purpose of the study discussed in this paper was to determine the feasibility and practicability of logging for copper using neutron activation techniques and commercially available equipment. The laboratory study showed that Cu could be detected in rock samples in the laboratory by high-energy neutron activation of 63 Cu. In the field, however, due in part to the large volume irradiated, the direct detection of copper using high-energy neutrons was not as promising. Detection of copper by measuring both the direct gamma-ray emission and the excessively strong low-energy gamma-ray absorption appears promising. Copper was not detected either in the laboratory or

"FOREWORDThis paper provides a unique description of a method devised for mining a very thick steeply dipping seam of soft gassy coal which was prone to spontaneous combustion. The editors con¬sider that the information in this paper should be important to those who may have to consider mining such seams again at some time in the future and therefore believe that the paper warrants reprinting in the present volume. The author was ask¬ed to review the paper and to add any additional relevant in¬formation. He provided the accompanying footnote, only a month before his death on April 22, 1982.IntroductionIn the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels. and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated.The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not lend themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition the present operations in this particular' seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not encountered on the upper level.Coal will, without question, long continue to be an impor¬tant factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion."

Planning for a project does not start with the announcement of the approval for a project. Planning actually begins when the project is only a prospect and it involves the years of experience of many people because their expertise influences the final decisions. In partial anticipation of the Pinto Valley project, as well as a search for improvement in the Copper Cities operation, two projects were undertaken. The first project was to substitute one 26" cyclone for three 20? cyclones in the single stage grinding circuit. The second project was to replace the Hunt air flotation cells with 300 cubic foot mechanical cells. The 300 cubic foot cells were just being introduced, consequently two types of cells were selected for testing. The results from both projects influenced the decisions on equipment for the Pinto Valley project.

A 32-channel continuous monitoring system has been developed to monitor radiation working level (WL), fan operation, and air door position. The system consists of a surface receiver unit and an underground transmitter that is connected to the various monitors. A continuous WL monitor used with the system can generate alarms at two different WL readings. One of these levels is variable from 0.00 to 0.99 WL and generates an alarm on the surface receiver. The other level, fixed at 1.0 WL, generates an underground alarm in the vicinity of the monitor. The detectors for fan operation and air door position work on the principle of a completed circuit to the underground transmitter (multiplexer). When the circuit is broken, as is the case when a fan is off or an air door is open, an alarm is generated at the surface receiver. This alarm remains in effect until the circuit is completed, signifying the fan has been turned on or the air door has been closed.

"The Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory (URL) is located on the eastern boundary of the Paris Basin. The URL started to be built in 2000 (shaft sinking operations) in the framework of ANDRA’s (French national radioactive waste management agency) research program aimed at determining the feasibility of a reversible deep geological disposal of high-level and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste (HLW, IL-LLW). Its underground drifts are used to study the Callovo- Oxfordian claystone layer between 420 m and 550 m in depth.The ongoing research program (started in 2006) following the “Technology Readiness Level” (TRL) Scale is more dedicated to technologies improvement and demonstration issue of the different disposal components, even if characterization and monitoring studies are still ongoing.In rock mechanics, at the main level of the URL (located at 490 m), construction and evolution of disposal cells of different size are studied for HLW and IL-LLW packages. A step by step approach, started in 2006, is carried out based on comparison of HM behavior of parallel drifts excavated/supported by different construction methods. These various configurations give insight of the influence of construction method on the EDZ extent and evolution and on the progressive loading of the support, which are key issues to design the Cigéo disposal drifts and excavations.The concept of disposal cells studied for HLW consists in horizontal steel lined micro-tunnels 80 m long and 70 cm in diameter. Several campaigns of tests have been carried out since 2009 in order to demonstrate the feasibility of excavating such micro-tunnels and study their behavior under different conditions (with and without back filling the annular gap between the rock and the casing, watertight or not casing). A full scale demonstrator representative of the benchmark concept has also been excavated, to study its behaviour under thermal loading with heat produced by electrical heaters."
