WIDESPREAD interest in the better utilization of coal is indicated by the attendance of over seventeen hundred men interested in the pro- cessing and utilization of coal and its by-products, at Pittsburgh, Nov. 15 to 18. The conference was truly international in scope and of a scientific character, and must be considered a real success. There were dele- gates--official and unofficial-from America, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden. Several Federal and 28 State departments had representatives, also many colleges and universities, and many leading industrial and mining corporations throughout the country. A feature of the sessions was that papers were mostly read in full and attentively listened to, although in some cases they were of a technical nature. The proceedings were opened by the president of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Thomas C. Baker, who spoke of the importance of the conference and felt that without foreign cooperation it could not have been held. There was no need to apologize for the movement of Carnegie Institute of Technology in the matter. Coal is commanding attention in every part of the world; so is power; and coal will remain the chief source of power for generations to come. The coal chemist is working with the engineer, and nobody can forecast what developments there will be in fuel technology. This conference may be the turning point of fuel technology in America. The development and application of these new processes may be of great benefit to Pittsburgh.

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

"Linear circuit analysis (LCA) is a fundamental tool that may be used to evaluate, design and improve the performance of mineral separation. The traditional LCA methodology provides a comparative evaluation of circuit designs purely from the unit interconnections. The quantitative approach uses the analytical circuit solution to evaluate the slope of the circuit’s partition curve at the midpoint. Since the partition slope is often associated with a separation’s general selectivity, this numeric value is used to compare and rank alternative configurations. Unfortunately, the partition curve slope only reflects the separation potential of middling material. By itself, this value does not account for the relatively high unit dollar value of pure material or the gains and losses in mass yield associated with alternative circuit configurations. Realizing the value in the LCA methodology, but respecting the limitations of the partition slope valuation, the authors have derived two new performance indicators that quantitatively address pure particle misplacement (the Partition Moment of Inertia) and circuit mass yield (the Yield Score). Together, these parameters provide a better indication of separation economics in typical mineral and coal separation systems. Since the two parameters provide independent information on circuit selectivity and circuit yield, a Pareto efficiency, multi-objective function selection approach is proposed for preliminary circuit selection.IntroductionOver the past 30 years, numerous scientific and industrial studies have proposed various mineral processing circuit design methodologies that attempt to optimize the allocation of separation resources within the processing plant. Over this period, the methodologies have undergone various transitions, including the increased inclusion of process models and computationally intensive algorithms, as well as a general shift from a purely technical solution (Lauder and McKee, 1986) to partially economic solutions (Abu-Ali and Sabour, 2003; Cisternas et al., 2014). Today, circuit design is largely driven by flowsheet simulation; however, no consistent design methodology is used across the industry.One intriguing approach for circuit evaluation is linear circuit analysis (Meloy, 1983a). This method evaluates the separation potential of the circuit solely considering the unit configuration and stream interconnections. No preliminary data other than the basic circuit configuration is required to use the approach."

"Surface conditioning (also referred as etching) of plastics prior to metallization is generally conducted with sulfuric I chromic acid solutions. Although these baths perform well technically, the presence of Cr (VI) imposes serious operating problems of an environmental nature. The present work reports ·the results of a study of surface conditioning o(ABS using solutions based. on sulfuric acid, with hydrogen peroxide and/or nitric acid, replacing chromic acid, as oxidants. Process performance was evaluated by SEM and by the uniformity and adherence of electroless nickel coatings applied on selected conditioned samples. The results showed that the evaluated types of solutions could be optimized to perform as well as the chromic-based baths, with a much superior environmental quality.IntroductionMetallization of plastics is normally undertaken for either decorative or functional purposes. Through metallization, the specific properties of plastics such as light weight, design flexibility, and low-cost of manufacturing are enhanced by the addition of properties usually associated with metals. These include reflectiveness, abrasion resistance, electrical conductivity, and a variety of decorative effects (1).The available processes that can be used for metallization of plastics are vacuum metallization or vapoµr deposition; indirect metallization and plating (1). Plating can be sub-divided into electroless plating and electroplating. In electroless plating, metal ions in aqueous solution are deposited on the .activated plastic surface by oxi-reduction reactions without the aid of an external electric potential, forming a thin metallic layer. This electroless deposited film has two functions: (a) it provides an electrically conductive substrate that allows further coating by electroplating; and (b) provides a secure bond between the plastic substrate and the electroplated layer (1,2). In case the electroless metallic part requires an additional layer for finishing purposes, or just an increase in thickness, the part can be additionally electroplated with a· variety of metals - in most cases those are copper, nickel or chromium (3)."

(Communication to the Secretary) : The investigation so fully described by Mr. Laudig was undertaken with the idea of determining if it is possible to learn by expesiment, without an actual trial in the furnace, what economical results can be expected from the use of a given ore-mixture. The research was necessarily preliminary, and the results obtained are only to be depended upon so far as they relate to the samples treated. With the exception of the ores obtained from the stock-piles of the Buffalo Furnace Company, and several samples taken at a neighboring furnace, there is no certainty that the ores represented the average shipments of any mine. For this reason the publication of the names of the ores might do producers a great injustice. The names of the ores arc therefore withheld, and their identity is further .veiled by leaving out of the analyses the phosphorus-contents. The investigation was begun with the preconceived idea that the rate of reduction would be found to be dependent upon the accessibility of the particles of the ore to the action of the reducing-gas. In other words, a spongy, brown hematite or a very fine Mesabi would be the easiest reduced. I had formed a scale with No. 21 first, No. 30 second, No. 1 third, Nos. 5, 24, 25 and the remaining Mesabis fourth, etc , which is sufficient to show how much actual results differ from a judgment based on physical characteristics. I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

"Characterisation of sulfide minerals (eg pyrite, sphalerite) in historic tailings can assist in determining whether there are economic benefits of reprocessing such materials using modern metallurgical practices. In addition, there are associated environmental advantages if the historic tailings are actively generating acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). At the Old Tailings Dam (OTD), Savage River, Western Tasmania, 38 Mt of pyritic tailings were deposited from 1967 to 1982; consequently it has been recognised as an AMD source. Long-term management options considered for this site have included the establishment of either a water, hard-engineered or vegetation cover. However, due to geotechnical challenges posed and the lack of success demonstrated by previous pilot studies, these strategies have not been implemented. Instead, resolving the pyrite chemistry can allow for a first-pass assessment of whether reprocessing these tailings is a feasible option as part of a long-term management strategy for this legacy site.Tailings samples (n = 144) were collected across the OTD from up to 2 m depth from five facies (A–E), and four zones (1 to 4; defined by hydrological regime and grain size). These materials were subjected to acid-base accounting (ABA) and mineralogical evaluations to determine their geoenvironmental characteristics. Following this, 26 samples were selected for in-depth laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations to evaluate pyrite chemistry across different tailings facies. The results revealed enrichment of Co and Ni in these materials. Specifically, Co content was up to 3.0 wt per cent, particularly within facies C to E, and Zones 3 and 4. Cobalt is recognised as a critical metal, therefore, reprocessing should be considered as a future rehabilitation option for the OTD, pending resource definition using established codes and practices.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Fox, N and Jackson, L, 2016. This paper presents costs for a coal log pipeline that can transport coal over distances from 50 km to 1500 km. The coal log pipeline (CLP) concept is a new technology in w hich coal is compacted into water impermeable circular cylinders that can be suspended in water flowing through an underground pipe. CLP includes processes to prepare the run-of-mine coal for compaction, the injection of coal logs into a pressurised water-lilled pipeline, the conveyance of the coal through a pipe including special pumping stations, and the treatment of the coal logs and water at the pipeline outlet. An 8 inch (203 mm) pipeline can transport more than 2 Ml of coal per year. CLP components have been extensively tested in bench-scale facilities where these tests have included start up/shutdown steady state flow behaviour, end of pipeline treatment of water and coal log handling, water hammer effects, abrasion of logs and pipeline, coal log manufacture, and other engineering operations. Several sites are being considered in the United States (US) for the first commercial demonstration that will probably take place in 1998. The cost calculations are based on realistic values for all the components of a CLP. including a return on investment. For pipelines of different diameter, values for coal transportation are presented in terms of $(USVtonne as a function of distance.

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). FoR a number of years the senior author has been interested in the various geologic and engineering problems involved in the development of the petroliferous districts of northeastern Mexico, having in a previous paper* endeavored to present a summarized statement of the information relating to the geology and soil resources of this region. Of the many interesting geologic phenomena, perhaps those which have been the object of most speculation relate to the igneous intrusions which, in places, have a controlling influence on the accumulation of oil in commercial quantibies, a relationship which has been tentatively explained by various observers with as many interestingly different views. The authors of the present paper aim to record, in the course of a general discussion of the various viewpoints, some additional data, and present further tentative conclusions with a view to rounding out an up-to-date summary of the subject. The greater part of the area in question lies in the State of Vera Cruz, only a northwest fraction being in the State of San Luis Potosi. Vera Cruz is bounded on the north by the State of Tamaulipas, the northernmost of the Mexican States along the Gulf. The topography of the States of Tamaulipas and Vera Cruz and of Texas and Louisiana to the north, is controlled by the Gulf coastal plain which in northern Vera Cruz has an average width of about, 60 miles, the transitional topography between that of the rugged Banks of the Sierra and the lowlands of the coast being made up of a series of terraces and irregular hills and valleys. Along with other transportation modes, the barge industry will be greatly effected by trends in domestic coal production. Traditionally, coal has been one of the major commodities moved by barge. Now, because of events in the international energy market, coal is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a major component of the country's energy program. Perhaps even more significantly, a series of events have caused other countries to turn to the United States as a source of coal. Although the outlook for coal demand is optimistic, it will be greatly influenced by the ability of the transportation sector to handle the additional traffic. Because of our long experience in moving large quantifies of coal, the barging industry is in an excellent position to capitalize on coal's increased popularity. A brief description of the barging industry should facilitate the discussion of coal as it relates to the barging industry. Barge companies operate on a 40.23-Mm (25 000 mile) river system which includes the East and West Coasts and the Mississippi River System. Included in the Mississippi River System are the Allegheny, Monongahela, Kanawha, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Warrior - Tombigbee and Mobile Rivers as well as some smaller tributaries. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which stretches along the Gulf Coast from Brownsville, Texas to Apalachicola, Florida, is also considered part of the inland waterway system.

"On January 1st 1996 Inco Limited, Tamrock OY, Dyno Explosives Group and CANMET formed a consortium for the development of robotic mining equipment. This project is a five year research and development agreement that combines the talents of the above organizations to facilitate the creation of mining equipment and systems for robotic mining.The projects are based on the communication system developed by Inco Mines Research and currently sold and marketed by Automated Mining Systems Limited. Main projects include the development and implementation of a positioning and navigation module (including a software mapping system that will be inherent to each piece of equipment), robotic systems for development and mining, and software systems to support the use of this equipment. Included in the program is the establishment of a test mine, at Inco’s 175 ore- body at Copper Cliff. This facility will allow collaboration of companies and research organizations for the design and testing of techniques and equipment for Robotic mining.This paper discusses the creation of this new research alliance, the Mining Automation Program or MAP."

The oil shales in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado occur in the Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation. The oil shales were deposited in a unique environment of deposition which caused the mineral nahcolite (NaHC03) to be precipitated within the oil shales. Post-depositional tectonics resulted in extensive fracturing of the Middle Zone of the Parachute Creek member, and to a lesser degree portions of the Lower Zone, which allowed percolating ground waters to dissolve the nahcolite in the fractured portion of the oil shale beds which is characterized by broken porous oil shale, certain beds of which have collapsed into rubble and debris. The extent and porosity of the Leach Zone aquifer is dependent upon the percentage of kerogen and nahcolite originally deposited in the oil shale. Any oil shale development program in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado will need to be preceeded by an extensive study of the Leach Zone in order to determine the effects on a mining program.

A new prinicple of side dumping front end loading for underground mucking machines has completely changed the concept of underground loading and haulage equipment arrangement both in production and development work loading. Versatility and adaptability of this type of machine permits combinations with a broad range of haulage means not possible with -conventional overhead loaders. Steel "armored" conveyors serving this type of loader are replacing conventional rail mounted car haulage to give a continuous loading operation and effect important economics of reduced manpower, faster loading rates and fewer working areas for a required production. First used in Germany this easy to control and highly efficient means of placing rock from the muck pile on or into haulage means has advanced the art of underground rock loading more in the past three years than any other advancement since the first successful small crawler mounted air powered loader was introduced in 1954. Bucket type loaders with a relative new side dump principle are gaining in popularity for underground loading. They are replacing conventional overhead loaders in present applications and becoming first choice in new ones. Primarily for hard rock development and production loading they are also widely used in production loading of coal and other soft materials. This discussion briefly traces the historical development of hard rock underground loaders to the new side dump type and its present population. In more detail various applications, loading techniques and the advantages of operation, production and economy with the side dumper in hard rock loading will be dealt with.

Many metallurgical processes use submerged gas injection to increase the contact area between gas and liquid phases in order to promote faster overall reaction rates. The work presented in this paper is part of an experimental investigation to measure the gas-liquid interfacial area available in bubble plumes within molten metal baths. Measurements of the nitrogen absorption rate during submerged injection into molten iron baths have been used to estimate the interfacial areas of the bubble plumes. A theoretical model was used to predict the superficial nitrogen transfer rate under mixed liquid phase mass transfer -interfacial reaction control. The interfacial area was calculated by dividing the overall nitrogen absorption rate by the superficial rate. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the interfacial areas measured in our laboratory with data from a comparable system reported in the literature. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of three theoretical models and one empirical correlation. The models of Turkdogan (3) and Zhao and Themelis (5) gave the best agreement with our data.

No economic activity would take place without human ingenuity, driven by our needs and wants. Economic activity is made possible by the energy from fossil and other energy sources, our technological hardware, the buildings and infrastructure made from materials such as metals, plastics, wood, water, and numerous industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are difficult to define; however, they generally include utilitarian minerals other than metals and fuels. Some of the industrial minerals form an exception to this categorization and, as explained elsewhere in this book, belong to more than one category because of the manner in which they are used. Industrial minerals are so numerous, and their applications so ubiquitous that they often do not receive the attention given to metals or fuels. Nevertheless, without industrial minerals, many of our most fundamental economic activities such as construction of our cities and towns, control of floods, transportation of our people, the search for minerals, the smelting of metals, and the delivery of supplies of clean water would be impossible. How then do we assess the economic importance of such a variety of materials lumped together under the general designation of industrial minerals? The price per ton or the total amount consumed do not satisfactorily explain the relative value of these materials to the economy. For example, the current price of limestone is about $5/t and the price of fluorspar is about $190/t. However, nearly 1.1 Gt of limestone, valued at about $5.5 billion, are consumed in the United States annually, compared with 590 kt of fluorspar, valued at about $1 12 million. It would not, however, be accurate to conclude that the mineral with the higher total value is always more economically important. Many other questions must be answered before making judgments of this type. These questions include how many people are employed in the production, processing, and distribution of the mineral? How is the mineral used? Is it partly or entirely imported? Where do the imports come from? How is the mineral transported? Is the mineral considered critical to national security? Is there a substitute material available in case the mineral supply is interrupted? Where would the substitute be produced? What would be the basic material from which the substitute will be produced? Even when these questions have been answered satisfactorily, the economic importance of the mineral is not completely known until the consuming sectors are studied as well. For example, even though the manufacture of fighter aircraft is vital to the national security, it employs only a fraction of the number of people employed in the housing and construction industry or the automobile industry or the appliance industry. Mineral commodities consumed in these latter sectors of the economy are more significant than those consumed in the production of fighter aircraft, because nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on the purchasing power of individual consumers. In comparison, the entire defense budget accounts for only 6% of the GDP. There is no easy way to present the importance of industrial minerals to the US economy because most minerals have diverse applications and products made from industrial minerals often con- tribute to the production of other goods and services. One way of highlighting the value of a mineral would be to relate it to the GDP reported by categories such as construction, machinery, stone, clay and glass products, electrical and electronic equipment, paper and allied products, and chemicals and allied products. These GDP categories represent industries fundamental to the economy totaling $644 billion, or about 12% of the GDP in 1990. However, these categories are not convenient for discussion of the many minerals that are used in our complex economy. In a general way, minerals are the 5% of our economy that make the other 95% possible. This chapter, therefore, discusses a selected few industrial minerals to illustrate their importance to various sectors of the economy.

This article deals with open pit mine planning and a computer technology known as Direct Block Scheduling, or “DBS”. This is an emerging technology for modeling mine exploitation strategies using mixed-integer linear programming. This technique has proved to yield stronger economic results compared to the Lerchs-Grossmann (“LG”) algorithm currently used at the beginning of the mine planning process. The article briefly describes the shortcomings of current practice; then, this delves into the superior results obtained by DBS technology compared to current practice. Finally, the article argues that results achieve so far by DBS could be enhanced even further. To do this, the framework to apply this emerging technology, which is also used in current practice, should be modified to better exploit the capabilities of DBS technology. To better understand this change, an illustrated case study is presented at the end of the article.
