The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research aimed at providing technology for a low-cost, high-recovery, environmentally acceptable mining system to recover the vast thin-seam coal reserves existing in the mountainous areas of the Appalachian region in the Eastern United States. As part of this research, the Bureau is evaluating new techniques to address these coal resources. This report summarizes the results of a worldwide technical search on thin-seam coal mining, the formulation of various methodologies for mining mountaintop thin seams, and the implementation and status of a physical model test program to validate and further develop the most promising concept-the "roof-fall-tolerant" mining system.

"The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. A case is made for the direct flotation process and the key parameters to achieving success in large scale direct flotation of pyrochlore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) is a niobium bearing mineral which has been the primary global source of niobium since the first pyrochlore mine commenced operations in the late 1960s (Gibson et al., 2015a). The process of grinding mill quality assurance brings with it associated truths and myths. When the mill quality assurance process took its first great steps forward in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were in response to the conditions existing, in our industry, at those times. In the late 1990s, we are faced with different conditions, and problems, and need fresh solutions. Yet the system developed for the early 1980s has produced no new approaches for the late 1990s, becoming instead more hardened and entrenched. This lack of development and actual resistance to research is now costing the industry significant amounts of money in late start-ups and useless scrap loss.

Column flotation is finding increasing use in the flotation of copper, molybdenum and other heavy metals and coal. Columns have proven operational, cost and metallurgical advantages which caused us to investigate their use in the proposed Escondida flowsheet. A comparative pilot plant test with 35 tons of ore showed that one column can replace three stages of cleaning and result in a significantly higher concentrate grade with no loss in recovery.

Seismic systems are a tool for the monitoring and forecasting the rock mass response to excavation. Common issues encountered at mine site audits and reviews are: how to design an effective seismic system, implementation of the design, interpretation of seismic source results and understanding the reliability of the seismic source. These issues are often a function of several items including: • Experience of site personnel in undertaking seismic system design. • Personnel not envisioning multiple phases of system expansion to understand system robustness issues. • System design/expansion occurring in response to damaging seismic activity rather than planned expansion of a system • The mine access development is often localised in comparison to the total orebody being mined hence, planning sensors in longholes in advance of development rather than in short holes close to development will improve the three-dimensional aspect of the network. • Limited site processing of the seismic event data, hence engineers do not see the uncertainty associated with event location, size, source and system layout. Mine site users require a framework to appreciate the challenges and limitations in locating large events. For example, event locations are given as precise measurements (to the nearest centimetre) whereas the volume of deformation resulting in the event often has dimensions of tens of metres or more (as defined by the source radius). A stronger awareness of the uncertainty of rock mass yield within large seismic sources will assist site users in the interpretation of rock mass damage. The encountered design and implementation errors are reviewed and discussed with a practical set of rules presented to provide a robust seismic system that provides consistent results and increases the user’s understanding of uncertainty in source location and size. The authors’ experience across multiple mine sites, seismic systems and damaging seismic events over a 30 year period has been summarised into practical rules for site personnel of all experience levels.

There was a large reserve of bauxite resources in China. And these resources were mainly the dias-pore-bauxite and contained plenty of aluminosilicate including kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite. Reducing the contents of aluminosilicate would be significant to the using of Chinese bauxite resources. In this paper, from the single mineral flotation experiments, the surface properties and flotation beha-viours of aluminosilicate including kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite, using dodecyl amine (DDA), N, N-dimethyl-dodecyl amine (DRN12) and N-dodecyl-1, 3-propane diamine (DN12) as collectors, had been investigated. The flotation results shown that the flotation behaviours of aluminosilicate had been influenced greatly by three amine collectors; and the effect was in the order of DN12>DRN12 >DDA. On the basis of FT-IR spectra and zeta potential measurements, the ionization of surface hydroxyl, as well as isomorphic exchange of surface ions, accounted for the mineral surface charges. And the mechanisms of interactions between the mineral surface and collectors mainly included two modes: electrostatic adsorption and hydrogen bonding; for the DDA and DRN>DDA. 12, the mechanism was mainly electrostatic adsorption; and for the DN12, the mechanisms of electrostatic adsorption and hydrogen bonding both existed. Results of quantum chemistry research shown that the collecting ability of amine collectors was greatly influenced by the electro-negativity of N in the amine molecules; and The |E(EHOMO| and ?E (HOMO-ELUMO) of N atom in DRN12 and DN12 were lower than that of DDA, and the positive charge of ?N group in DRN12 and DA12 were higher than that of DDA. All these calculation results could explain the collecting power of DN12>DRN12>DDA.

In the past decade mineral deposit models have become an important tool for the exploration geoscientist. By combining genetic theories on the formation of particular deposit styles, with geological, geochemical and geophysical criteria relevant to ore location, it has been possible to more effectively focus exploration effort to the regions and local targets which have the best chance of success. However, such models have their limitations, and must be carefully and critically applied and continually updated as new technical and research information becomes available.

Conventional barrier pillars in underground coal mines are intended to protect mains and sub-main entries for relatively long periods of time. Inter-panel barrier pillars that may be used in especially deep coal mines, say, below 800 m (2,400 ft), are intended to protect longwall panel faces and adjacent panel entries for the life of nearby panels. Barrier pillar failures have serious consequences, especially when failure is sudden and catastrophic. Design of barrier pillars is thus of considerable importance to safety and efficiency of operations. Locally, failure occurs at the limit to elasticity when stress tends to exceed strength. Strength of rock is stress dependent, so an analysis of stress is central to rational design of barrier pillars. There are several approaches to stress analysis for coal mine pillar design that range from the simplified but popular tributary area method including variations that use empirical definitions of the tributary area (volume) to more sophisticated numerical methods such as the boundary element method and the finite element method. Despite ease of use, empirical methods are limited and always suspect when applied to conditions beyond their scope of definition, while boundary element methods do not generally include pillars in the solution domain. The finite element method is not so restricted and thus is a natural choice for conventional and inter-panel barrier pillar safety analyses. Caving of roof strata certainly affects the distribution of stress about longwall faces and nearby barrier pillars. Conventional wisdom that considers roof strata to respond as cantilever beams indicates the longer the span the greater are loads on longwall faces and face supports. Failure of roof beams, caving, shortens spans and relieves face and support loads. The same view is applicable to barrier pillars in that long roof spans outside of barrier pillars leads to higher pillar loads than short spans. Hence, caving should be beneficial to barrier pillar safety. However, the benefit may be small depending on the extent of caving and only in the form of a slight reduction in overburden weight transmitted to the barrier pillar, especially in case of inter-panel barrier pillars. FINITE ELEMENT MODEL Finite element models for stress analysis in rock mechanics are formulated in consideration of physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. These models meet the essential requirements for equilibrium of stress, satisfy strain displacements relations, and in a general sense, relate stress to strain through material laws, often referred to as constitutive relations. The last may be complex and replete with nonlinearities. A de facto engineering material law is the elastic model in the form of Hooke?s law for linear, homogeneous materials that may be anisotropic. A limit to elasticity is imposed by strength in the form of a failure criterion or yield function that accommodates triaxial stress states. Examples used in rock mechanics are the well-known Mohr-Coulomb (MC)criterion, the popular Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, and the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion. The first is linear in stress, while the second is nonlinear. Both do not include any effect of the intermediate principal stress. The last is also linear in stress but includes the intermediate principal stress. All show an increase in the major principal stress at failure with confining pressure. In the UT2/3 finite element programs, the failure criterion Y is a nonlinear, anisotropic form and is also the plastic potential [1]: [YJI=+ 11NYJI=+- (1) ] where N is an exponent, usually 2, and J2 and I1 are nonlinear anisotropic forms of the second invariant of deviatoric stress and the first invariant of principal stress. The form (1) reduces to DP when N=1and isotropy prevails. When Y = 1, the limit to elasticity is reached and plastic deformation is possible. The material constants that enter (1) are all computed from unconfined compressive, tensile, and, in case of anisotropy, shear strengths. These latter strengths may be estimated from conventional laboratory test data. Of course, joints in field-scale rock masses induce different values. How different is often a matter of conjecture. For comparative studies, laboratory rock properties seem adequate. Inelastic, that is, plastic behavior occurs with strain beyond the elastic limit. Strain hardening, ideal plasticity, and strain softening are possibilities. Ideally brittle behavior with complete loss of strength is an extreme form of strain softening [2]. Caving may also be considered as strain softening with a less drastic reduction of material properties. As intact roof strata fail, fall, and form a rubble pile below, a new material is formed with greatly reduced elastic moduli and strengths, say, 1/100th of the original intact moduli and strengths. From another viewpoint, caving is simply a natural cut and fill process. Input for stress analysis by the finite element method includes: 1. Preexcavation stress state 2. Geology (stratigraphic column) 3. Structure (major faults, joint sets) 4. Elastic moduli 5. Strengths, and specific gravities of each rock type 6. Excavation sequence Output from an analysis includes distributions of: 1. Stress 2. Strain 3. Displacement 4. Local factor of safety (element fs) The last is defined as the ratio of strength to stress and in view of the failure criterion (1), is the ratio [fsJstrengthJstress=] where the numerator is the maximum possible value and the denominator is the actual value of the square root of the second invariant of deviatoric stress. This invariant is a measure of shear stress intensity but also reduces to uniaxial tensile and compressive strengths as the case may be. ALTHOUGH many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other interested parties to give out their "inside information." Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County at this time. LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally, until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 2 ½ hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75° west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south. 45° east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parallel syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin', south of the Cement anticline. The position of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of Cement, has not been discovered.

"Although coal-mine explosions rank third among causes of underground fatalities, they receive more wide-spread attention than any other accidents in mines because frequently many persons lose their lives in a single disaster. Each bituminous coal-mine explosion endangers the lives of approximately 100 persons--the average number employed underground in a commercial mine. A critical analysis of coal-mine explosions in a restricted district gives a cross-section of relative existing explosion hazards, of common causes of ignitions of gas and dust, and of effective prevention measures. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines is collecting data on coal-mine explosions in the various States, and this circular is one of a series analyzing the causes and recommending methods for thy prevention of similar occurrences,The data on this circular are based on records of the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines. Unfortunately practically all of the early records were destroyed by fire in the State House at Charleston, W. Va.; the remaining records were made available to the authors by N. P. Rhinehart, chief of the Department of Mines, and his cooperation is gratefully acknowledged.The earliest available reference to coal in West Virginia is that made by John Peter Lally who in 1742 found ""a great plenty of coals"" near a river later called Coal River. In 1809, Nicholas Roosevelt found coal along the Ohio River and used it on the New Orleans, said to have been the first steamboat west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1810, Conrad Cotts opened a mine near Wheeling and sold coal for domestic purpose in 1812, a mine was opened on the Ohio River opposite Mason City and produced 1,200 bushels of coal that year. In 1840 the total West Virginia coal production was 298,691 tons; in 1863, the production had increased to 444,468 tons, and in 1883, to 2,335,833 tons. During this period apparently most of the coal was extracted from coal outcropping on the hillsides; little danger of gas ignition existed at that time, but explosions from blown-out shots occurred frequently. On February 22, 1383 the West Virginia legislature enacted legislation providing for a mine inspector to inspect the mines of that State, to prevent mine accidents, and to insure properly ventilated mines.In a special report to the Governor on December 31, 1884 the Inspector of Mines reported:We have 5 shafts, in 4 of which there is more or less gas; and in 1 of our drift mines there was an explosion on the 27th day of March 1880, whereby 2 men were killed and a boy badly burned.Table 1 lists 287 explosions in West Virginia coal mines. Several early explosions were listed in the annual reports of the West Virginia Department of Mines as ""blown-out shots"" or ""powder explosions"". The injuries usually were described; explosives accidents have been eliminated from these and other available data, and only those in which dust or gas were involved have been included in this paper as explosions."

The worldwide talc industry has experienced significant changes since the 1980's. Consolidation of companies and operations in Europe, Australia, and North America has altered the face of supply and distribution. Imports of Chinese and Australian crude have increased competition and product options. The number of processing operations without local mines has moved competition closer to the market area. Quality controls related to ISO certification and tighter specifications demanded by the customers have altered the way our mines and mills operate. Ceramics, coatings, and paper applications continue to consume the majority of processed talc.

The catenary system of line construction possesses so many desirable characteristics from the operating standpoint that it has wide application for all types of electric traction. Many steam roads are electrifying sections of their lines, and in most cases are operating both steam and electric locomotives over the same track. This means that the overhead catenary system is subjected to the severe corrosive action of locomotive smoke, and data concerning the resistance of various alloys to this form of corrosion are very desirable from every point of view. Reliable and specific information and data on the subject of corrosion due to steam and smoke from locomotives are extremely meager and, on this account, extensive service tests, together with accelerated tests, have been made on a number of commercial metals and alloys. The observations and data recorded in this paper are the result of a preliminary test which was started in 1923 and which has been carried on to the present time. The recognition of the need for even more detailed and accurate data has resulted in the undertaking of another test which has been in progress for about a year. The result of this test will be published in due course. Some years ago The Ohio Brass Co. was asked by one of the large steam railroad companies to furnish data on construction details for a catenary system which it was considering for one of its divisions. The selection of materials which would give the necessary physical characteristics as well as withstand the severe corrosive action of locomotive gases caused electrical railroad engineers considerable concern. At that time, there were available no specific or authentic data on these important questions: no systematic investigation of the problem appeared to have been made, even though it's importance was generally recognized. Such observations as had been made were crude in that they had been limited largely to visual inspection which too frequently is most misleading. However, the scattered information which was collected gave important clues as to how best to start an investigation. Technical literature was studied, metallurgical experts were consulted, and the problem was discussed with engineers who were in close contact

CHARLES A. CHASE, manager of the Shenandoah-Dives Syndicate, operating the Shenandoah Mines in southwestern Colorado, reviewed the current work at that property at a recent meeting of the Colorado Section, in Denver. This operation is a new one, having been in effect only two years, but the properties that were consolidated by Mr. Chase had had certain production in earlier years, since when they had: been inactive. These properties are located. in the high mountains of the San Juan section in Colorado, and although they had had a substantial production of ores of good grade in the upper levels, the project as a whole involved the bold undertaking of driving through the mountain, starting on the Mayflower claim on the Arrastre Gulch side and passing through the Mayflower, Slide, Terrible, North Star, Dives and Shenandoah No. 3 claims. This is a distance of over 8,000 ft. which is known to be mineralized, and the main operating tunnel was started at an elevation of approximately 11,000 ft. The main exploration work has already extended in nearly 4,200 ft. and the present mining production of nearly 550 tons daily is being secured while the main exploration work is being continued. The main heading is now within the North Star claim and the plan of operations involves continuing ahead for a few hundred feet and then starting an upraise which will he 2,200 ft. high and which will connect with the old workings of the North Star mine. The plan of ruining then will he to drive levels along the vein in both, directions to daylight and retreat downward, taking out all the ore and abandoning, the workings after the ore is removed. In this way one level after another progressing downward will be abandoned. The raise will be of two compartments, one of which will carry the 8-ton skip and the other the counterweight and manway. So far the ore has been broken over an average width of more than 11 ft., with an output of 39 tons per machine shift.

Sampling equipment manufacturers endeavour to ensure that the mechanical equipment installed in sampling systems are designed and manufactured to adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or other standards relevant to the application. The mechanical parameters necessary to achieve these standards can be well controlled and requirements such as constant speed can be met through good mechanical design and engineering. However, when the equipment is installed and put into operation, the ISO compliance of the system is out of the hands of the equipment manufacturer and handed to the operator, who may be a generalist control system integrator.Making a sampling system perform according to standards, and being able to monitor and report on compliance require that the sampling system knowledge and the control integration is combined and applied in an integrated approach. Using a dedicated library of control routines developed for sampling can change a system from having compliant equipment to being a compliant system. By the use of flotation tests it was confirmed that there are two functions of oxygen in sulphide mineral flotation. Sized samples of galena and chalcopyrite were sulphidized, washed free of excess sulphide ion, and then contacted with air-saturated water for certain lengths of time. The mineral was then transferred to a sealed laboratory flotation cell containing water with a known concentration of dissolved oxygen. Xanthate and frother were added and flotation continued for 1 min.Both the extent of mineral oxidation and the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly affected the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite. The response to a change in either variable is dependent on the level of the other, but generally best flotation occurs with the maximum degree of air saturation of the pulp. Galena flotation is hindered by oxidation of the mineral beyond a small threshold amount but a similar effect for chalcopyrite was not observed...

AN insistent and steadily growing demand is evident for the broadening of undergraduate curricula in engineering. Among suggested additions are training in public speaking, report writing, business law and contracts, accounting, finance, money and banking, scientific management, economics, social and labor problems, psychology, and ethics. The demand for these subjects comes from the older engineers and from the industries that employ our graduates. Of course, many of the men who suggest such changes are influenced largely by their personal needs and contacts, but the demand is sufficiently widespread to merit serious study by educators. In fact, many educators themselves concur in the proposals for broader training. These matters were examined intensively a few years ago in an exhaustive study of engineering education. Opinion at that time was rather strongly against any profound change. Since then, however, the whole economic system has undergone violent disruption. Even if recommendations made a few years ago were appropriate to the conditions then- obtaining, the enormously changed conditions of the present make advisable a further careful study of this problem. In recent years, mergers, to reduce costs, have sharply limited the number of engineers employed and have thereby intensified the struggle to secure positions. In this stiffer competition, engineers with the most adequate training undoubtedly fare the best.

Placer Dome, US operates the Bald Mountain Mine. The Bald Mountain Mine is a surface operation located in remote northwestern White Pine County in east-central Nevada, approximately midway between Elko and Ely. The mine is in the Newark Valley along the southwestern flank of Bald Mountain a part of the Ruby Mountain range, at an approximate elevation of 7,500 ft (2,286 m). The geology at the Bald Mountain Mine is highly altered, both mineralogically, and structurally. Highwall stability and control have long been an issue at the operation, due largely to the varying geologic conditions. In some blasts as many as seven distinct geologic unconformities exist. These unconformities affect both final high wall integrities, as well as blast fragmentation characteristics. A 60 million ton (54.5 million tonnes) layback expansion of the existing “Top Pit” as well as development of a new satellite pit, “Sage Flats”, is being undertaken. Design final highwall pit slopes have been steepened from the traditional 47º to 55º in order to reduce overall ore-to-waste ratios, thereby improving economic viability for the expansion over the 4.5 year life of the project. With the increased usage of electronic detonators throughout the mining industry, mine operations staff, as well as representatives from the mines explosive supplier felt that an evaluation program incorporating electronic detonators would be warranted. The areas of focus for this evaluation would be resultant highwall pre-split integrities, peak particle velocity measurements (both near field and far field), frequency measurements, loader productivity, and visual interpretation of the results. The mine incorporates 25 ft (7.6 m) benches and uses separate trim blasts in conjunction with production blasts in order to reduce blast effects along final highwalls. Hole diameters in production blasts are 7? ” (200 mm). Typical production blast patterns are 18 ft x 18 ft (5.5 m x 5.5 m), drilled in a square pattern configuration. Shot sizes vary greatly, ranging from 200 holes to as many as 800. Bulk low percentage ANFO/emulsion blends are utilized as the redominant blasting agent. This report presents a summary of the results of a four-phase program conducted for the Bureau of Mines to evaluate underground mine fire detection systems. In addition, Phase IV is presented in detail. The major accomplishments of this program are: 1) quantification and prediction of the distribution of fire products in a mine pas¬sageway; 2) quantification of "equivalent protection" by fire detectors as contained in Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations; 3) definition of detection criteria; 4) design of a detector test program for determining detector spacing requirements; 5) design, construction, operation, and calibration of a fire test apparatus for evaluating mine fire detectors; 6) quantification of several mine fire sources; 7) evaluation of several fire detector types including heat, CO and CO2 gas, and ionization smoke detectors; 8) development of generalized spacing criteria for mine fire detectors; and 9) development of performance specifications. Reports for Phases I through III are included in Appendices.

Strauss, vice president of Metals Reserve Company, Washington, D.C., dated May 22, 1945, to the chief of the Metallurgical Branch, Bureau of Mines, in Washington; includes the following: Because of the present critical shortage that exists in the supply of corundum required by certain industries in war production, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Mr. W. C. Keeley, Vice Chairman for Metals and Minerals, War Production Board, has recommended that the Reconstruction Finance Corporation though Metals Reserve Company, proceed with preliminary mill testing of the corundum ore in Gallatin County, Montana, and that the results of that testing be transmitted to the War Production Board. If the results of the testing work are considered satisfactory, Metals Reserve Company will then provide for the actual mining and milling of the ore for the production of corundum concentrates.Pursuant to the above stated recommendation by the War Production Board, Metals Reserve Company desires to make -use of the facilities of the Bureau of Mines testing plant at Rolla, Missouri, for conducting sink and float and other concentration tests on representative samples of the Montana corundum ore. Two, and possibly three samples of ore are to be tested which will have an aggregate weight of approximately 50 tons."
