The use of frozen soil as ground improvement and temporary ground support for the excavation and construction of cross passages and adits has gained in popularity over the last decade. Frozen soil provides a number of advantages for this application such as being waterproof, structurally stable, and working well with any soil type. One of the greatest advantages is the ability for the system to be adaptable to the project geometry and site limitations. Multiple case histories illustrate that freezing can occur from the ground surface, from within the tunnel, or as a combination.

Recent investigations in the United States and in other countries have produced considerable information on the nature and occurrence of minor elements in coal. The possibility of recovering certain elements, particularly germanium and uranium, from coal ash and other coal products has received considerable attention. Some flue dusts are potential sources of germanium, and certain lignite deposits are potential sources of uranium, but industrial recovery of these elements has been limited to small quantities for technical and economic reasons. Considering the large amount of coal mined annually, a small percentage of a rare element may have industrial significance if an economical method of recovery can be developed. In 1944 information on the occurrence of rare elements in coal was reviewed in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 669 (46).3 This report is a revision of that paper with the view of summarizing published information available for United States coals, and pertinent information concerning coals of other countries. Selected references from the original paper are retained. New references do not include all preliminary reports when more permanent literature describing complete projects is available. Consequently, the list of references should not be considered complete.

PALEOLITHIC MAN, laboriously shaping a stone implement in his cave, discovered that the dust irritated his eyes and nostrils and hindered his labors, whereupon, muttering a few incantations, forerunners of modern profanity, he removed himself and his work outside. There, ignoring the jeers of the hairy ?old-timers,? he turned his back to the wind and resumed operations in comparative comfort. Thus originated the dust problem in the mineral industries, and its solution. Despite long familiarity with the annoyance, danger, and loss occasioned by dust, little progress was made in the engineering solution of its problems until recent years. Some advance can now be reported but too many traces of ancient tradition and practice still remain. Considerable published information is available but only a part of this is of proved accuracy and utility. The greater portion is either misleading, being derived from too few cases to be of general application, or entirely erroneous, originating in guesswork, legend, or individual inspiration, divine or otherwise. The engineer, confronted with a dust problem, has neither the time nor the special training required to extract the values from this mass of low-grade. It is, therefore, desirable that we attempt to correlate the known values and to put them into a form upon which actual progress can be based. This discussion is, then, for the benefit of that engineer, particularly the engineer in the mineral industries and more particularly in ore-dressing plants, and is merely a gathering of facts already known but difficult to segregate.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, the South African coal industry experienced a series of methane explosions in which well over 200 coal miners lost their lives. In addition, a fire and an explosion in the gold mining sector claimed a further 240 lives. These tragic incidents resulted in the establishment of a research facility at Kloppersbos dedicated to explosion and fires research and the funding of an extensive research program, and almost certainly influenced the government of the day in its decision to establish, in 1993, the Leon Commission of Enquiry into Mine Health and Safety. The results of this focused research program, the wide-ranging recommendations of the Leon Commission and the determination of the coal mining industry to improve its safety record all combined to result in the past 20 years without a major explosion.This paper lists some of the research outcomes and, through three case studies, illustrates what can be learnt from investigations following explosions. The paper concludes with an evaluation of some of the findings of the Royal Commission on the Pike River coal tragedy. Many of the Commission’s conclusions are pertinent and relevant to the coal mining industry worldwide and their implementation could significantly improve coalmine safety; however, a careful study of the available facts indicates there could well be an alternative explanation of the source of the methane, the location of the ignition and the size of the explosion at the Pike River coalmine.CITATION:Phillips, H R, 2015. This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. The hilly regions of Kerala are severely affected by excess rainfall, causing tremendous damage due to landslides and slope failures. It is necessary to strengthen the existing slope profiles to prevent such disasters and avoid their risk to human lives and civil infrastructures. This paper studies the effect of micro pile to reinforce the slopes in Idukki district of Kerala, where slope failures are frequent. Three-dimensional slope stability analysis is carried out on slopes from the Idukki to obtain safety factor values using the MIDAS GTS NX program. The slope is fully saturated herein by taking the model's piezometric surface at the ground level to simulate high rainfall intensity. The critical slopes are then modelled with micro piles to analyze their effectiveness in improving the stability under static conditions. Different micro pile arrangements are considered, and a series of slope stability analyses have been carried out to obtain the optimum configuration with the required safety factor. The FOS values increased by more than 50% with micro piles for all the slopes. The optimum micro pile arrangement obtained for each slope shows that micro pile distribution between the toe and middle of the slope is an effective location for reinforcing slopes.

Geotechnical engineers are routinely tasked with advising suitable stand-off distances below highrisk sections of slopes in open-pit mines that are identified to have potential to deform or collapse. Accurate prediction of failed material runout can mean the difference between continuous safe mining and unwanted high-potential incidents that result in loss of production, equipment damage, injury, or loss of life. This paper updates previous empirical relationships presented by the authors for estimating the volume and runout distance of excavated slope failures, in an open-pit mine operation, using slope geometry as the primary predictor. Cases are sourced from varying slope geometries (fall heights up to 385 m, slope angles up to 80°) and a range of commodities (iron ore, coal, nickel, gold, copper, boron, and limestone), excavated in sedimentary, banded-sedimentary, epithermal, and copper-porphyry deposits, across all six inhabited continents. Analysis of these cases identified positive correlations between slope height and runout distance, and slope height and failed material volume. In general, negative correlations were identified between Fahrböschung angle and slope height, and Fahrböschung angle and failed material volume; however, significant scatter is observed in these datasets. A definitive relationship could not be derived comparing Fahrböschung angle with failed material runout. Slope angle was also found to be a poor indicator of runout. Of the parameters analysed, slope height (i.e., fall height) was found to be the simplest and best predictor of runout distance. This paper presents new charts for predicting failed material runout distance for rock slopes. Relationships are defined for structurally and rock-mass driven slope failure mechanisms at average, 75%, and 95% prediction intervals

With ever rising energy costs, it is increasingly important for mines to operate with energy efficiency. As a large portion of a mine?s energy consumption is often attributed to the operation of mine ventilation fans, maintaining an efficient ventilation system is a critical pro-active way for mining companies to reduce power costs. A common way to measure a mine?s ventilation system efficiency is to calculate the volumetric efficiency, which is simply a calculation of the percentage of total mine air that is usefully employed for production. The purpose of this study is to document a nationwide comparison of the volumetric efficiency of U.S. underground coal mining operations. The results will aim to show just how efficient today?s coal mine ventilation systems are and what factors may be causing their various efficiencies and inefficiencies.

The strongly skewed grade distributions and the need to estimate the local recoverable reserves in a selective mining environment are the two problems that Ordinary Kriging (OK) cannot easily handle. With the recent introduction of the nonparametric, distribution-free technique of Indicator Kriging (IK), the above problems can be solved. This paper describes the results of performance evaluation of IK in an open-pit gold-silver deposit. For performance evaluation, the predictions of local recoverable reserves using IK were compared with the actual reserves based on blast hole information. The IK estimator, although a bit optimistic, performed very well in predicting the total recoverable ounces of gold from each panel on a test bench. The OK estimator was also used to try to predict local recoverable reserves, by treating each panel as either waste or ore, depending on the panel's average grade. Under this criterion. OK was found to be very biased and pessimistic.

Numerical modelling was used to determine the magnitude and direction of stresses around drives both adjacent to and distant from open stopes in the South Crofty tin mine. Modelling predicted that drives near the stopes are situated in a stress-relaxed zone. The peripheries of drives that are sited in solid rock away from the influence of stoping are in compression. Key-block modelling was used to determine the typical geometries of critical blocks and distinct element modelling was used to determine block stability. The conclusions derived from modelling fitted the observational data. This indicated that key-block theory is a valid tool for analysing the stability of roadways in the South Crofty mine. The support requirements for drives located next to stoped-out areas were formulated using a risk analysis approach to key-block formation. The results were compared with support guidelines derived using empirical design methods. Good agreement was obtained for the roofs of the drives but not for the sidewalls. The concept of a critical excavation width was formulated: once an excavation is larger than the critical size the length of rockbolts need not be increased as the excavtion dimensions increase. This may be the case in all rock mases.

"The IsaMill™ was originally developed to address liberation issues at Mount Isa Mines (now Glencore) operations, McArthur River and Mount Isa in the early 1990s. Following on from the industrial success at those operations, the IsaMill™ was commercialised. In the year 2000, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) became the first external user of the technology with a 1.1 MW M3000 IsaMill™ installed to supplement the roaster capacity at its Gidji Processing Plant. The IsaMill™ was used to ultra-fine grind about 10 t/h of pyrite flotation concentrate to 10–12 µm prior to gold cyanide leaching. Based on the success of the Gidji installation, another was installed at the processing plant at KCGM’s Fimiston operation in 2002 in a similar duty.In 2014, a 3 MW M10 000 IsaMill™ was selected to replace the roasters at Gidji as part of the A$98 M emissions reduction project. The mill was commissioned in April 2015 at the design 30 t/h, allowing the immediate shutdown of the two roasters. Replacement of roasting with ultra-fine grinding completely eliminated air emissions at Gidji while maintaining overall plant production rates.This paper details the history of the IsaMill™ at KCGM from the original M3000 to the latest M10 000. In 1991, roofbolts were introduced as a primary support for inseam retreat longwall entries at CBDC's Phalen Colliery. Increasing mine depth (+550 m) necessitated replacing conventional inseam steel sets in these entries because they were being severely damaged during wall retreat and subsequently causing gate end problems. Roofbolts had been used in the Sydney coalfield between 1949 and 1963 in room and pillar working, however, some concerns arose with using roofbolts as a primary support in long (2.2 - 3.4 km) single entry roadways. In order to alleviate these concerns, a phased approach was adopted whereby conventional steel densities remained along with roofbolts. The roofbolt design was such that the roofbolts would be the primary support and the steel sets would experience little or no loading. A detailed geotechnical monitoring program was developed by both CBDC and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratories technical staffs. The results of this monitoring were used to build-up confidence in roofbolts and subsequently reduce the steel set densities until eventually only roofbolts were used as a primary support. This paper will discuss briefly the phased introduction of rootbolts at Phalen Colliery and more specifically the development of geotechnical data collection and interpretation.

The B3 mine is a multiple coal seam strip mining in operation in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil. A traditional truck & excavator operation is used to remove the overburden and selectively mine coal seams, ranging in thickness from 30 cm (1 ft) to 2.5 m (8.2 ft). Blasting is required in order to excavate part of the sedimentary rock overburden where the rock is too hard for mechanical excavation, and to mine the coal seams, selectively.

The climate and location of the Red Dog Mine present several challenges to blasting operations. The mine is located north of 68º latitude, in an area of continuous permafrost. Ground temperatures are below freezing year-round and air temperatures range from -40 to 70°F (-40 to 20°C). Because there is no overland access to the mine, the entire year’s supply of bulk explosives, approximately 7,000,000lbs (3,175,000kg) is shipped in by barge during the 100 day shipping season when the port is ice-free. The first week in July is the earliest that new product arrives at the port. Emulsion usage is maximized from mid April through October when surface water fills the blastholes during drilling. This necessitates that a considerable portion of the bulk explosives are stored for 10 months or more before usage. The emulsion is routinely pumped from the ISO containers at temperatures of 20ºF (-7°C). The mine engineers conducted a testing program during the 2001-2 blasting season to identify the bulk explosives best suited for the conditions at the mine. A secondary goal was to decrease the usage of sensitized emulsion, as this is the most difficult portion of the explosives order to ship. To ensure repeatability when transferring the results to the day-to-day blasting operation, the majority of the testing was incorporated into normal blasting operations in the field. The mining methods used at Red Dog Mine make direct fragmentation analysis impractical and performance testing in the field relied primarily on VOD measurements. The products were also tested for their ability to be pumped in cold temperatures.

Approximately 10,000, 10-Ton, 4 wheel, 2 truck, coal mine cars are in general service in U. S. Mines. None are equipped with an automatic braking system. Very few are equipped with hand or parking brakes. The report lists major manufacturers of the car and develops estimate as the percentage represented. It complies physical specification of cars of major car manufacturers, and develops a composite clearance diagram. It then discusses a pneumatic system employing truck components for an automatic system that could be used as an add-on unit. The components are listed and priced and a schematic circuit is developed for the system. Recommendations as to future programming are made.

The old mine workings on four barite-fluorite veins of the Lake Ainslie district, Nova Scotia, were opened recently and channel sampled. The samples were then forwarded to the Ore Dressing Laboratories, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, for chemical analyses. Following the analyses, the sample rejects were combined to form bulk samples, representing ore from each vein, for small-scale batch test work. Tonnage samples from the veins, for pilot mill testing, were submitted when requested by the Bureau. The results of the analyses on the channel samples showed that there are two grades of ore in the di strict, represented, for test purposes, by the Trout River vein and Johnson vein ores. Small-scale and pilot-plant test work was undertaken on both these ores. The Trout River ore is amenable co concentration but, because of the high-barite-co-fluorite-co-calcite ratio, a fluorite concentrate was not obtainable from the Johnson vein ore as received. However, Johnson ore blended in a 1 :1 ratio with Trout River ore gave a mill feed that was readily concentrated. The test work on these ores showed that the following concentrates are obtainable : (a) A barite concentrate, with a recovery of 85 to 95 per cent of the available barite, analysing 93 co 96 per cent BaS04, 4 co 6 per cent CaF,, and 0.5 co 2 per cent CaCO3. (b) A fluorite concentrate, with a recovery of 80 co 85 per cent of the available fluorite, analysing 94 to 97 per cent CaF, , 1 to 3 per cent BaSO., and 1 to 3 per cent CaCO3

In the U.S.S.R. three of the world's major-known phosphate deposits are located. These have an estimated reserve of 2,600 million short tons of contained phosphorus. The best known lies in the "Khibiny Massif', an alkalaic rock formation some 600 square miles in area with mountain peaks rising to an altitude of 3300 ft above the surrounding terrain. Location and Climate The Khibiny Massif lies north of the Arctic Circle in the Kola Penin-sula, 100 miles south southeast of Murmansk, at a latitude of 67° 30' north and a longitude of 35° 30' east. It is serviced by rail from Murmansk and Leningrad (900 rail miles south). Figure 1. The phosphate operations are centered about the two cities of Apatity and Kirovsk. The former has a population of 35,000 and is on the Leningrad¬Murmansk railway. Kirovsk, 15 miles to the east, is now a city of 85,000. The region is at the limit of the tree line with most of the ground cover typical tundra. The mean annual temperature is -4°C and, in a normal year, precipitation occurs on 240 days. Because the temperature does not exceed freezing for 300 days each year, virtually all of the precipitation is snow. The two towns are nestled between mountains and, because of the weather, extensive avalanche control systems incorporating major engineering construction have been introduced to divert snow slides away from the populated areas. General Kirovsk was first settled in 1923 and the apatite occurrences were recognized shortly after. In 1933, the first concentrator for the recovery of the mineral was completed, producing in its first year of operation 170,000 tons of concentrate. With the growth and demand for phosphate in the U.S.S.R., a second concentrator was erected at Apatity. It calve on stream in 1963. Because of the severe climate, in the early days mining was limited to 85 days per year. With the introduction of new techniques and improved mining methods, the season has been extended to 115 days.

"Those of us who have been concerned with the problem of geophysical exploration in southwestern Ontario have followed the development of the Poulter method with much interest. I have much appreciated the opportunity of reading an advance copy of Dr. Poulter's clear exposition and of preparing the following brief remarks on the probable applicability of the method to the Palaeozoic area of southwestern Ontario.During the years 1944 to 1946, the Ontario Department of Mines, in co-operation with the Union Gas Company and the Dominion Natural Gas Company, operated an experimental party in the hope of establishing a seismic technique appropriate to the •area. The results were completely negative. During two summers' field work, no reflections whatever were obtained except in one area near Windsor. It is the •purpose of these remarks to inquire whether Dr. Poulter's techniques might yield favourable results.It was the conclusion of the report on our work that two principal causes contributed to the failure of the method. In the first place, the geological column possesses few elastic discontinuities and those that exist appear to have low reflection coefficients. In the second place, the area is drift-covered in general. This drift complicates the situation by absorbing seismic energy and by giving rise to groups of complicating refracted phases which obscure the entire interesting section of the record. The situation is further complicated by the high reflection velocities and the relative shortness of the Palaeozoic section, these factors combining to bring in a reflection from the basement in about half a second."

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 162 natural gas samples from 15 states and 4 foreign countries. Of the total samples, 154 were collected during calendar year 1992. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1992. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"X-ray transmission (XRT) sorting has become the preferred recovery technology option in several parts of the diamond-winning flow sheet. In the De Beers Group, applications of XRT are found across kimberlite, alluvial, and marine operations. This is the result of intensive R&D conducted over the years to arrive at a suite of machine embodiments capable of sorting and auditing diamonds across all size ranges.The first applications in the marine environment used the technology in an auditing mode, and served as a useful early predictor of diamond content weeks ahead of sorthouse returns. The same machines are now available with ejection capability to produce high final product grades. The next application was tests on coarse alluvial gravels as an alternative to dense medium separation. The results were very encouraging, and tests are planned for both green- and brownfield kimberlite environments, as well as to explore an alternative to conventional techniques in final diamond recovery. At the Jwaneng mine Large Diamond Pilot Plant (LDPP), the objective is to recover diamonds in the size fraction –45 +25 mm.The technical challenge remains in the finer sizes, for high-capacitymachines as direct alternatives to conventional diamond recovery technologies. This is an area of ongoing R&D and it is only a matter of time before the breakthrough emerges. X-ray transmission fundementalsXRT makes use of X-ray imaging techniques to analyse objects and materials, and has a wide range of applications from baggage scanning for security purposes (Martz et al., 2016), to recycling of waste material (Owada, 2014). During the last decade XRT has been applied to an increasing extent in the minerals processing industry (von Ketelhodt and Bergmann, 2010; Sasman, Deetlefs, and van der Westhuyzen, 2018). Dual-energy XRT (DE-XRT), in which images of the target material are obtained at both high and low Xray energies, allows for elemental analysis and therefore can be used to discriminate between various minerals.A DE-XRT system makes use of a dualenergy X-ray line scan sensor to generate images of transmitted X-rays (Figure 1). Dualenergy refers to the camera, which contains two sensors, one responding to low-energy Xrays and one to high-energy X-rays. Feed material can be imaged either while on the belt, or while in flight."
