In this study, the efficacy of Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 in the leaching and beneficiation of Agbaja iron ore was evaluated under varying conditions of temperature, ore particle size, and pH. Agbaja iron ore is a Nigerian low-grade ore containing about 43%–52% iron and a high amount of gangue materials, including phosphorus (1.4%–2.0%) and sulphur (0.12%). The study was organised in triplicate in shake flasks with 48 samples. One millilitre of washed cells of Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 suspended in normal saline at 0.5 McFarland standard (108 cells ml-1) was introduced into each flask containing 50 g of sterilised ore in 100 ml of bioleaching medium, and the samples incubated at room temperature for eight weeks. The levels of upgraded iron, mobilised sulphur, and phosphorus were determined by atomic absorption and ultraviolet spectrophotometric analyses, respectively. Results showed that a particle size of 0.8 mm was optimal for iron upgrading and sulphur mobilisation while 1.0 mm ore size was optimal for phosphorus mobilisation. Up to 89.60% of the iron was upgraded while phosphorus and sulphur were mobilised, leaving residual values of 0.223% and 0.02%, in the ore, respectively. The organism produced best beneficiation results at a pH of 2.5 and a temperature of 3ºC. Correlation analysis with the Pearson’s correlation model showed a positive correlation between iron upgrading and sulphur-phosphorus removal (r =1.000, and r =0.967), respectively. These results present Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 as a promising candidate for large scale leaching and beneficiation of Agbaja iron ore.

"This article describes, through the presentation of five cases-history, technological advances that the Authors together with Tunneling Contractors devised for coping with adverse geotechnical conditions. It is believed that by introducing these new elements in a method that has proven its value in Italy and abroad for the last 40 years, the umbrella arch method, due to its versatility and simplicity, can become a universal method for conventional tunneling in very poor ground conditions. After a description of common faults and mistakes in applying the method, 5 projects are presented which demonstrate that self-drilling pipes give excellent results in terms of performance a zero volume loss, while, function of the ground conditions the various grouting mixtures used, such as expansive jet-injected cement-base grouts and bi-component resins, extend the use of the umbrella-arch in variety of grounds even in presence of water-bearing lenses. The case-histories provide successful applications in different conditions.BASIC FEATURES OF UMBRELLA ARCH METHODThe umbrella arch method provides a short support of the tunnel vault just ahead of the excavation face. The method foresees the drilling and installation of peripheral, sub-horizontal steel pipes in the ground, followed by their grouting. The umbrella arch method is also known as forepoling, steel pipe umbrella, reinforced protective umbrella or simply “umbrella”. The umbrella arch method does not have a static function because the immediate stabilization of tunnel section is entrusted to the internal shell of steel ribs and shotcrete. The “umbrella” provides a pre-support of the excavation which has to be stable for an adequate length and duration permitting the installation of the next steel rib and shotcrete under conditions of safety (Figure 1).The umbrella-arch provides pre-reinforcement of poor ground around the tunnel perimeter in a simple and flexible manner that is adaptable to different ground conditions. In fact, it is possible to vary the number and length of pipes, the distance between them, their diameter and thickness as well as the overlapping length of two succeeding umbrella arches. The versatility of the umbrella arch technique allows its application to: clay deposits, granular alluvial deposits, moraine and debris materials even when containing large blocks, heavily jointed, foliated and tectonically disturbed rock masses."

Occupational health and safety is regulated by statute and common law. South Africa has, like many other countries, legislated extensively on occupational health and safety. Despite the body of legislation, the common law continues to play an important role as far as it concerns contractual, delictual and criminal liability. Two major Acts regulate occupational health and safety viz. the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 (?OHASA?) and the Mine Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996 (?MHSA?). The MHSA applies to mines and works as defined and related aspects. OHASA applies to other industries but does not apply to employers and workplaces to which the MHSA and certain matters covered by the Merchant Shipping Act, No. 57 of 1951 apply. See section 1(3) of OHASA. 2 The employer?s health and safety obligations in terms of the MHSA 2.1 Section 2(1) of the MHSA provides amongst others, as follows: ?The employer of every mine that is being worked must: (a) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is designed, constructed and equipped: (i) to provide conditions for safe operation and a healthy working environment (ii) ... (b) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is commissioned, operated, maintained and decommissioned in such away that employees can perform their work without endangering the health and safety of themselves or of any other person?.

This report concerns Contract No. 3B of the Port Richmond Project, for the Department of Water Resources of the City of New York. It involves the construction of 7, 000 ft. of 7 ft. finish I. D. interceptor sewer by tunneling in soft ground, as well as associated manholes, regulator chambers, siphons and miscellaneous sewers and structures, beneath a heavily travelled perimeter road in Staten Island. The Contractor is Richmond Constructors, a joint venture of Grow Tunneling Corp., sponsor, MacLean Grove & Company, Incorporated, Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc., and Andrew Catapano Co., Inc. Project manager is Paul DeMarco, Vice-President of Grow Tunneling Corp. The cortract, as designed and bid, requires the use of liner plates 101 -0" O. D., and both cast iron and steel designs of several widths were included in the bid documents by the owner. The specifications also required the contractor to install and put into operating condition, prior to commencement of mining, a complete low pressure compressed air plant and all accessories for mining in compressed air, even though the contractor was given the option of using other methods of ground water control. A third requirement of the specifications was that a shield be used, either manual or mechanical, and with full provision for "breasting". While apparently the hysteria with regard to silicosis and other occupational diseases has largely subsided and this subject is being more carefully considered and soberly judged, it would be poor policy for any employer to maintain that the storm has ended and that he can relax and revert to conditions as they were 5, 10, or more years ago. The fact is that the plan of paying occupational-disease compensation is now in its infancy and can be expected to grow rapidly. At present, while all of the States of the Union, including the District of Columbia and excepting only Arkansas and Mississippi, have compensation acts, only the following make provision for occupational diseases to some extent or in one way or another: California, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia? Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Silicosis is compensable in one way or another in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, and possibly in other States. During the past few months, occupational-disease legislation (largely silicosis) has been considered in some form in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. It will be surprising if comparatively comprehensive occupational-disease legislation is not on the statute books of nearly every State in the Union within the next 5 years. With this situation confronting him, the farsighted industrialist who has the interest of his organization at heart, if he has not already done so will immediately start to "put his house in order" by studying possible occupational disease hazards to his employees and promptly applying known remedial measures or attempting to devise such measures if none exist. Unquestionably, one of the most important of the surveys to be made relates to dust occurrence, as State laws on occupational disease are almost certain to contain provisions, on silicosis and, with almost equal certainty, the provisions of any State law are not likely to be particularly similar to those of other States.

Prior to the merger of BHP and Billiton, both companies had a keenfocus on improving their performance in health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) matters. This shared intent, albeit executed insomewhat different ways, provided an excellent foundation for the newCompany. During the integration planning phase, a team was formed toconsider the organisational design for consistently achieving world class HSEC performance. The design included the policy platform, resources, structures, standards and procedures to be implemented in the merged entity. A key aspect of the design was the fully integrated HSECManagement Standards. These Standards create the framework for theconsistent application of BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Policy at all of ourmanaged operations across the world. The Standards have their origin in similar frameworks adopted by BHP during the 1990s, as well as thewell-known quality related standards (eg ISO 14001). However, they areunique in that they combine all aspects of HSEC management into asingle integrated set of auditable standards. By combining these areas and integrating our HSEC Management Standards with other aspects of the æBHP Billiton WayÆ, we are establishing a holistic, line management driven improvement approach. Over time, the BHP Billiton Way will embed a systematic improvement philosophy that we expect will become a key source of competitive advantage. The HSEC Management Standards are consistent with ISO 14001,OHSAS 18001, the Australian Minerals Industry Code for EnvironmentalManagement and generally aligned with SA8000. While compliance withthese external standards ensures that a systematic approach andimprovement plans are in place, BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Standards gofurther to include minimum performance requirements that reflect theintent of our HSEC Policy. Therefore, implementation at site levelensures that robust systems are in place to implement our Policy and that accreditation can be achieved to external standards if required.To assess implementation of the HSEC Management Standards anaudit system has been designed which incorporates both self-assessmentand peer review. Each site is required to undertake an annualself-assessment of compliance with the Standards using a commonassessment protocol. Every three years a peer review is conducted at each site to confirm the results of self-assessment and to provide a means of sharing knowledge throughout the Company. The review teams are composed of line managers and HSEC professionals from around theCompany, representatives of our joint venture partners and independentspecialists as required. The Company has committed to public reportingof the audit results through our annual HSEC report and this is reflected in our published targets. From a wider perspective, as we in the resources industry strive tocollectively raise our HSEC performance and reputation, there may be arole for industry based HSEC Management Standards complemented bya level of independent review.

The recent activity of numerous foreign mining companies in the once flourishing tin fields in Cornwall, England has resulted in renewed interest in the evaluation of hypothermal tin deposits. These deposits are mainly narrow tabular bodies and are usually steeply dipping. They exhibit thermal zoning the mineralization changing from lead/zinc through copper to tin with depth. The tin zone virtually never exceeds 1,000' in depth and the ore shoots within this zone tend to be erratic and localized. The grade which is presently considered to be economic is about 0.7% Sn. , this means a concentration of about l% cassiterite (the only economic mineral) which, being twice as heavy as the gange, represents only. 5% of the lode volumetrically. Within the lode, only one third may reach this economic grade and values within the shoots can range from 100% cassiterite to zero over a few inches. The enormity of the problem of evaluating such a deposit has not been fully appreciated by the companies involved whose experience has, for the main part, been in larger and more predictable ore bodies. This paper attempts to put these problems into perspective and out- lines the useful applicatations of statistical and computer techniques. It also stresses the need for enlightened interpretation of data by men familiar with the problem and that even in this day and age, educated, intuitive deduction should not yet be relegated to the limbo of alchemy and witchcraft.

The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

The level of mineral exploration activity for platinum in recent years, especially in North America, has ranged widely. Exploration programs have been based on a variety of ore deposit models and deposit types. These range from the classic magmatic model for sulfide/oxide deposits and their associated placers, through hydrothennal models for bonanza-type deposits, to low-grade mineralization potentially amenable to lower cost bulk mining methods. The platinum-group element (PGE) distribution in these different deposit types is not well-known however, and PGE determination is fraught with analytical difficulties. To properly assess a prospect or to achieve effective recovery by mineral processing, it is important to determine the mineralogical distribution of the PGE.

The small town of Bruce Mines lies a few miles east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on the north shore of Lake Huron. This was the site of the first copper mine. This copper smelter used a reverberatory furnace, based on the Welsh process, and operated in the period of 1849 to 1850, when the plant was destroyed by fire. During the period of 1850 to about 1869, crushed and sorted ore was shipped to England and later to the United States. In 1869, a roastleach plant, based on the Henderson Process, was constructed at Bruce Mines and was operated until about 1872. This short article describes the early development of this historic operation. Although the rich copper ore found in the vicinity of Bruce Mines was known to the Indians, its discovery in or about 184 7 was credited to Mr. Keating, who named the area Bruce in honour of Lord Elgin (James Bruce), Canada's Governor General. In 1848, the property was acquired by the Montreal Mining Company for 40 000 pounds sterling and the company immediately sent a small party to investigate the deposit. The party sank a shaft on a lode within a hundred yards of the lake and also reported two adjacent lodes farther inland, which were left undeveloped until the turn of the century. Initially, the foundation of the headframe and hoist was built above the frost line and when the machinery was set in motion it collapsed. Eventually, the shaft was to reach a depth of 300 feet. By 1849, the property was well established and the small settlement consisted of 77 miners, 65 labourers, 4 boys, 11 tradesmen, including blacksmiths and carpenters, 2 mining captains, 1 engineer, 2 clerks and 1 superintendent. The community, including the workers' families, numbered about 250.

The particular purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the development of underground conveying as applied to methods of working coal in the mines of Alberta. Historical A retrospective view of coal mining discloses a continuous effort, on the part of those interested, to substitute mechanical contrivances for hand labour. A patent for a coal-cutting machine was granted to Michael Menzies in 1761, at which time much of the transportation of coal underground was accomplished by means of sledges. Early forms of cutting machines attempted to duplicate the action of a miner's pick, and one hundred years lacer than Menzies? patent we still find this class of machine, driven by water power or compressed air, in use to a limited extent. A coal-cutter using the principle of a circular saw and worked by hand was exhibited in London in 1851, and from these crude beginnings the machines of today have been evolved. Transportation of coal underground has similarly been subject to considerable improvement. The above mentioned Michael Menzies took out a patent in 1750 covering the use of a self-acting incline plane, which is probably the earliest record of any system devised to lighten the load of the crammer or car-pusher of those days. In the year 1868 the Gillot & Copley machine was patented, this being a compressed-air-driven disc coal-cutter which proved highly successful. The chain cutters were a natural development from this type, and for a number of reasons they have been even more successful in the majority of cases.

Clinton Creek Mine in west-central Yukon produced 0.94 million tonnes of fibre from 15 million tonnes of asbestos ore between 1968 and 1978. The mine closed in 1978. The deposit lies along the margin of a medium sized ultramafic pluton that intrudes schistose and gneissic rocks of the Yukon Metamorphic Complex. Country rocks are metamorphic equivalents of a mixed sedimentary and volcanic assemblage deposited during Precambrian or early Paleozaic time. Movement along the north west-trending Tintina Fault System probably caused the fairly high meromorphic grade that altered the original rocks to schists and gneisses. The ultramafic pluton hosting Clinton Creek Mine is one of several bodies that were emplaced along a deep seated imbricate fault system parallel to the Tintina Trench. Most of rhe intrusions were hydrothermally altered to serpentinite, bur apparently only the one at Clinton Creek contains commercial quantities of asbestos. The Clinton Creek pluton was probably injecred slowly at relatively low temperatures into the crustal rocks as a "mush" that cooled gradually, allowing sufficient time for serpentinization and chrysotile fibre crystallizarion.

One of the most dramatic changes, from a geological perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological staffing and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services. As a result, there has been a change in the way geological information is generated, managed and retained within the industry. This paper describes the changes that have taken place in the industry, provides two case studies of how companies manage their geological Intellectual Property and reviews some of the issues associated with management of in-house and outsourced geology services.

This is the second of a series of publications that describes the progress of mechanical longwall coal mining in the United States in which a German coal planer was employed.3/ Details of the equipment, a description of its operation, and the results obtained in mining the experimental panel were published in the preceding report. Experimental mining with the planer in the first panel showed an improvement in performance over conventional mining methods at the coal company's Stotesbury 11 mine. The work, which was begun on an experimental basis, soon proved successful, and the coal company purchased the equipment for continued use. Two panels, adjacent to the first, were developed and mined with the planer. Each of these panels was shorter than the preceding one because water seepage from a surface creek limited development. On completion of mining in the third panel, the planer equipment was moved by the cooperating company to a nearby mine operated in the same coal bed where a large area of coal suitable for planer mining is available.

Short-range mine planning (less than five years) previously was accomplished using contour and isopac maps, pencil and paper, an abacus, and our lucky quarter. Through the use of both micros and mainframe time sharing, Glenrock Coal Company (GCC) has been able to virtually put the old equipment away (except the problem solving quarter). In the process, GCC has saved many man-days and eliminated the more tedious parts of mine planning, such as picking elevations off a map with an engineer's scale and repetitive calculations. These savings have allowed GCC to do a more extensive job of mine planning as well as offer more alternatives, making GCC better prepared for possible economic changes. Mine planning, simply, involves looking at what has been done and deciding what needs to be done using various constraints. The application of this concept is not as easy as it sounds. The need for experience and insight cannot be replaced by a machine, but machines can supplement a person's ability by doing the bookkeeping and the repetitive work. Through the application of computers and their accessories, GCC has brought mine planning to a more modernized state. The following paper will detail the development and use of one system as used at GCC. According to the Darcy?s law, filtration rate should increase with increasing pressure drop (?P) across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, ?P is created by the free water present on the surface of a filter cake. Thus, ?P can become negative when the free water disappears from the cake surface, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In the present work, we have developed methods of overcoming this problem by either increasing the air pressure inside or applying vacuum outside a centrifuge. Laboratory dewatering tests conducted using these provisions showed that the moistures of various minerals and coal fines can be reduced to the level that can obviate the need for thermal drying. The new concept has been successfully tested both at pilot- and full-scale, which lead to commercial deployment through Decanter Machine, Inc., under the trade name Centribaric® centrifuge. Compared to equipment used in hard rock mines, the lifespan of equipment deployed in oil sands operations tends to be shortened due to the abrasive nature of the material and soft ground conditions in which it operates. One of the challenges of oil sands mine planning is to determine the most cost-effective replacement time for aging equipment. For cost engineers dealing with aging equipment, the options become an economic trade-off between taking the chance of higher frame failure or buying new equipment. Therefore, the ultimate question is: “When is the best time to replace the equipment?”

"Recovery of water is always a major factor in the Beneficiation process. As Preparation Plants become larger the recovery of water for reuse, is a critical cost consideration. Tema Isenmann Inc in conjunction with our sister Company Multotec Manufacturing, has over the years, developed numerous different Screen Panels, Sieve Bends and Static Screens for dewatering. This paper will focus on a new innovation, the TeePee™ Panel which has double the open area of conventional Screen Panels. This results in efficient dewatering (reduced filter cake moistures) which allows for the use of smaller Vibrating Screens or increased capacity on existing Vibrating Screens. A major factor in the efficiency of any Screen Panel, including TeePee™ Panels, is the performance of the Vibrating Screen. If the Vibrating Screen does not have the required gravitational force or screen area to drain it will not dewater efficiently. Therefore a holistic approach has to be taken where the Vibrating Screen needs to operate at an optimal level, in conjunction with the correct Screen Panels, to achieve efficient dewatering. Key performance areas for Vibrating Screens are therefore detailed in this paper with an emphasis on important dewatering criteria. Case studies of different dewatering applications are included, where the use of TeePee™ Panels, has shown a marked improvement over conventional flat Screen Panels in reduction of filter cake moisture content.INTRODUCTION Dewatering can be done in a number of different ways and is largely dependent on the ore type, the particle size distribution and to what extent one needs to dewater will determine the method used. There are a number of different dewatering methods that can be used for particles above 200 micron, including Screen Bowl Centrifuges, Filter Presses, Static Screens, Static Sieve Bends and Vibrating Screens. This paper will focus primarily on Vibrating Dewatering Screens showing improved drainage and a reduction in the filter cake moisture content. KEY PERFORMANCE CRITERIAL FOR VIBRATING DEWATERING SCREENS For clarification the critical key performance criteria for Vibrating Dewatering Screens are set out in this paper. Dewatering Screens Vibrating Dewatering Screens are normally linear motion, either horizontal or inclined at 5 to 7° upwards with a vertical or back sloped plate at 45° to the rest of the screen deck. The back plate will often have screen panels in them to increase the dewatering capability, as shown in Figure 2 below."
