Gem-quality red beryl in the Wah Wah Mountains of southwestern Utah formed as a post-magmatic mineral in a topaz rhyolite flow. Unlike topaz, this beryl occurs along fractures in devitrified rhyolite, rather than in lithophysal vugs. The flow occupies a graben and perhaps a significant paleo-drainage. Beryl occurs at medial depths within the eroded flow, about 170 m below overlying mafic lava flows. Both beryl-bearing fractures and the host rhyolite show an unusual amount of argillic alteration compared with other topaz rhyolite flows. Alteration may be related to the incursion of surface water along shrinkage fractures within the flow. Whole-rock concentrations of CaO within the host rhyolite are very low (<0.01 % to 0.18%) compared with other topaz rhyolites and Be concentrations (about 20 ppm) are about average. Low Ca activities prevented fluorite precipitation and allowed Be transport as fluoride complexes. Beryl probably grew at subsolidus temperatures (-300-650°C), but above the temperature of kaolin development (200-300°C) as fluoride-rich vapors, released by devitrification, encountered fractures and mixed with vapors derived from surface water flowing through the fractures. Beryllium fluoride complexes reacted with water vapor, silica minerals, alkali feldspar, water, and Fe-Mn oxides along fractures to produce red beryl. Continued reaction of the cooling flow with surface water at lower temperatures probably produced a boiling, more acidic fluid that produced the argillic alteration. Consequently, eruption of low-Ca topaz rhyolite followed by entrance of surface water into medial portions of a devitrifying and still hot lava flow appear to be critical factors that led to red beryl formation.

"These are heady times for the mining industry, with strong metal prices, investor enthusiasm for the junior explorer and ready access to finance for mineral projects. Many projects were shelved in the past because of technical deficiencies — insufficient tonnes or grade, metallurgical problems, the deposit was too deep or too narrow, or the project was physically or economically under water. With the possibility of sustained metal prices, now is the time for those previously “challenged” projects to be re-evaluated and financing sought for continued development. The question is, do these deposits have reasonable prospects for economic extraction, as required by all mineral resource reporting codes? NI 43-101 defines a mineral resource as that portion of the mineral inventory that has reasonable prospects for economic extraction. However, a mineral resource is not simply an inventory of all blocks above a given cut-off grade. The spatial distribution and geological and grade continuity must also be considered. The qualified person (QP) must consider factors significant to project economics at the mineral resource estimation stage, and not just when qualifying mineral reserves. CIM Best Practice Guidelines for estimating mineral resources require the factors significant to project economics be current, reasonably developed and based on generally accepted industry practice and experience. In establishing the cut-off grade, it must realistically reflect the location, deposit scale, continuity, assumed mining method, metallurgical processes, costs and reasonable long-term metal prices appropriate for the deposit. Variations within the resource model (rock characteristics, metallurgy, mining methods, etc.) may necessitate more than one cut-off grade or economic limit in different parts of the deposit model. There must be sufficient knowledge of the metallurgical characteristics of the deposit, which should be supported by preliminary metallurgical test results."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to describe the results of a preliminary investigation of a method thought to be useful in interpreting geological structures in un-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The writer is not aware of the method having been described or investigated previously, although no thorough search of the literature has been made.The method to •be described is based on the assumption that, in argillaceous sedimentary rocks, certain ceramic properties are diagnostic for certain beds within areas of variable limits.Two ceramic properties• have been investigated: pyrometric cone equivalent (P.C.E.), and bloating characteristics of shales. The enquiry has been directed toward testing the usefulness of these properties in determining the following:A -The correlation of shale beds and, by inference, of coal seams, sandstone beds, or other such structures associated with them.B.-The location of contacts between marine and non-marine shales where lithological, palaeontological, or other evidence is lacking.Limitations of time and facilities have prevented a thorough investigation of this problem. The results given in the present paper are preliminary only. It is hoped, however, that they will occasion discussion or even lead to more thorough investigation of the method by individuals or organizations.There are, admittedly, various limitations to the proposed method. It is thought to show some promise when used in conjunction with the well-known and established methods used in stratigraphic correlation and, more particularly, when the conventional methods are not applicable."

Para la remoción del mineral de cada método de minado, se utiliza la perforación y voladura. En cuanto a la evacuación del mineral grueso de los métodos de minado semi-mecanizado y mecanizado, se utiliza la locomotora con vagón. OWING to the pressure of routine analyses at the laboratory during the past year, work of an investigational nature on water problems has been greatly curtailed. Favourable reports by the boiler inspectors indicate that the operators are giving satisfactory attention to feed-water treatment at the several . power plants. Some of the operators prefer lime and soda, others the phosphate and soda treatment. Springhill is still on the same commercial treatment as they were using last year, and satisfactory results are being obtained. This individual preference for a particular treatment, although it may be different for feed waters of similar nature, indicates that so long as proper conditions of alkalinity and concentration are maintained within the boiler, it is immaterial what chemicals are used in the treatment. This statement refers, of course, to the low-pressure boilers. In high-pressure boilers, a treatment such as lime and soda cannot be satisfactorily employed, on account of the precipitated calcium carbonate unduly increasing the amount of suspended matter. Only one case of impending trouble was reported during the year. That was at Seaboard, shortly after the new unit was placed in operation. Dissolved oxygen, considerably in excess of the permissible 0.030 cubic centimeters per liter, was detected at various points on the feed line. It was suspected that a de-aerating heater was being operated at too low a temperature, and chemical tests, made before and after the necessary adjustments, proved that this was the source of the trouble. While it has been impossible to give mine waters the attention they require, progress can be reported in the work carried out by the Mechanical Department. Past investigation of the action of mine water on various acid-resisting alloys is now bearing fruit, and it can safely be said that repair work on mine pumps has been reduced by nearly one-half.

Description of Operations: Before proceeding with a discussion of our health and safety programs at Pioche, it may be proper to give a brief description of Pioche and of our operations there. Pioche is one of the early Nevada mining camps. It was founded shortly after the discovery of high grade silver ore in 1863 and mining has continued with more or less regularity to the present day. In an era of lawlessness, Pioche was notorious. The story persists that 75 men died with their boots on before one died a natural death, and old payroll records show that nearly as many gunmen were employed to stand off claim jumpers as there were miners working the mine. That was probably as close to a safety program as the times permitted. Pioche is situated in southeastern Nevada on the main highway between Ely and Las Vegas. The camp is on the flank of "Treasure Hill," near the original silver discovery, at an elevation of about 6000 ft. The present day population of about 2000 is primarily dependent upon the mines of the area, although Pioche also serves as the county seat of Lincoln Couqty and as the center of the surrounding livestock industry. The camp is served by a branch of the Union Pacific Railroad and receives power from the generators at Hoover Dam. The Pioche operations of the Combined Metals Reduction Co. were started in 1923 when the first complex lead-zinc ore was shipped to the company&apos;s mill at Bauer, Utah. The modern mill at Pioche was completed in 1941. The operations are medium sized in the nonferrous field, employing an average of 350 men in the mine, mill, and related works. The complex lead-zinc ore is mined from replacement deposits in a comparatively flat, extensively faulted, limestone horizon. Mining methods vary from stull-supported open stopes to filled square-set stopes. The thin bedded limestone and shale overlying the ore is allowed to cave as areas are mined out and caving frequently follows closely upon ore extraction. The relatively heavy ground and the numerous faults add to the problems of safe mining. The mine is well mechanized and the mill and surface plant are modern and well equipped. Labor is organized in a C.I.O. union and labor-management relations have been unusually harmonious. During most of the period since 1923 a competent supervisory staff worked to reduce safety hazards but the primary responsibility for safety rested on the individual workman. Accidents happened and all too frequently they were regarded by all concerned as unavoidable. In October 1939, the late Robert L. Dean became superintendent at Pioche. Most of his previous experience had been in the fields of iron and coal mining and from that experience he brought the concept that no accident is unavoidable. Many of the features of our present health and safety programs were initiated by Mr. Dean during his term as superintendent. Health Program: Our health program centers in Dr. Q. E. Fortier and his new, well-equipped, and well-staffed, modern hospital in Pioche. The program starts with a thorough pre-employment physical examination and is followed by yearly re-examinations at the expense of the company. The Pioche Mutual Benefit Association, to which all Pioche mine operators and employees belong, pays benefits covering hospitalization and surgery expense incurred by employee members and their families. The Association is governed by a board of directors elected by its members. The mine operators of the district donated the original capital and pay the monthly dues of the employee members. The object of this paper is to try to put what man and nature do into perspective. The facts indicate that although man may sweat a little, Ms. Nature is by for the greatest pollutor of all.

The support of roof in mines is dependent largely on the character of the top rock and its occurrence. The formations overlying the orebed in the Birmingham district are sandstone and slate. The sandstone occurs in beds of sufficient thickness to constitute important elements in the system of support; the slate is relatively strong but is thinly stratified. The alternating beds of sandstone and slate furnish an excellent combination in that the former are strong and the latter are impervious; however, their continuity is broken by jointing or slip planes. The thickness, and consequent weight of the overlying formations, is important in so far as the size and arrangement of pillars are concerned but may be relatively unimportant, temporarily at least, as a factor in the support of the roof. The position of the respective beds of sandstone and slate, their relative thickness, and their inherent weakness because of the occurrence of faults and folds, may exert a predominating influence on their support in place, which is affected only in part by the weight of the cover. The only mine in this district that operates under a cover of approximately 2000 ft. (1900 ft.) is the Shannon so-called "twin slope," situated 14,000 ft. southeast of the portal of the No. 7 mine of the Tennessee Coal, Iron, & Railroad Co. The conditions in this mine indicate what may be expected in other mines when the same depth is attained; in fact, the effect of pressure is shown in several mines that have not reached two-thirds of that depth. It is evident, then, that conditions affecting the support of roof will not improve but rather will become more difficult with the extension of the mines into the valley under a constantly increasing weight of cover. Further, the difficulties will probably be augmented by the occurrence of faults and other disturbed ground, the presence and position of which at present are largely unknown.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia, about 50 km north of the town of Southern Cross. Ore is trucked from three geographically isolated sources to the crusher at Koolyanobbing, where it is blended before and during crushing. Lump and fines products are produced and railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR is examining alternative processing paths, from mining to ship loading, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing costs. Modifications to the system must be consistent with potential future expansions and maintain the low inter-shipment grade variability on which CNR prides itself and has built a strong relationship with its customers. In searching for the optimum process design, many options from mine face to ship loading must be evaluated and compared. Pilot plant studies are infeasible, while complex mineralogical interactions, competing goals and numerous possible system configurations limit the applicability of theoretical analysis. It was therefore concluded that simulation modeling would provide the confidence to take the next step into production trials. This paper describes techniques applied at CNR to simulate grade variability resulting from potential process design changes. The simulation models are easily run Excel-based modules, with each module representing a different part of the process. The modules use extensive Visual Basic macros driven by Excel&apos;s user-friendly interfaces. Presentation of the results is enhanced by Excel&apos;s excellent graphical capabilities. The simulation software stores and graphically presents time-stamped data from a run, enabling detailed analysis of different process configurations. Final success of a simulation run is measured by inter-shipment variability (standard deviation and process capability) and in-process ore tonnages. Meaningful results from the simulations require the initial input data contain the same correlations present in the real production environment, between the mineral components, production linkages and across time. The data also have to allow simulation of potential changes to mining method and introduction of new pits into the blend. Mining data from the real operations under study are therefore used, with average grades and variability adjusted to match potential future development proposals. It is also necessary to filter out medium and long-term variations from the production data as this variability is best controlled through the conventional medium to long-term mine planning process, not by the process design being studied. The filtering was carried out using a Fourier transform technique, which is described.

"This study examines the problems faced by open pit mine superintendents who make choices about how to direct their materials, either to the waste dump or to the mill. The paper explores the effects of introducing a 10% sampling error and a 0.9-times to 1.1-times sampling bias on positively skewed distributions for precious and base metals, negatively skewed distributions in the case of bulk commodities, and normal distributions as is the case for coal deposits. Parent distributions for each commodity were created on a 25 x 25 m grid using transformations of gold, iron ore, and coal data-sets, spatially based on a nonconditional Gaussian simulation. Ordinary kriging of grades for the three commodities into a 10 x 10 m grid provided the reference case against which the distributions with the sampling error and sampling bias for the commodities were compared. Imposing cut-off grades on the actual-versus-estimated scatterplots of the three commodities allowed the distributions to be classified into components of waste, dilution, ore, and lost ore. Ordinary kriging of values for each deposit type acted as the reference data-set against which the effects and influence of 10% sampling error and 0.9-times to 1.1-times sampling bias are measured in each deposit type. Indications are that the influence of error and bias is not as significant in gold deposits as it is in iron ore and coal deposits, where the introduction of small amounts of error and bias can severely affect the deposit value.IntroductionThe effects of poor sampling and the financial implications for mining companies, traders in mineral assets, and sellers of metal as dore or commodities is documented in a number of studies, the most notable of which is that by Carasco (2004). He examined the financial impact of poor sampling practices in the Chilean copper industry and found that finacial losses due to poor sampling amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars over the life of a mining operation. Holmes (2004) examined the effects of correct sampling and measurement as the foundations of metallurgical balances, and found that revenues from the sales of large iron ore shipments may be profoundly affected by poor sampling practices. In South Africa the way in which sampling of in situ gold-bearing reefs affects the mine call factor has been an ongoing study since the disparity between the estimation of gold in the reef and the actual gold bullion produced was noted by early investigators such as Beringer (1938), Jackson (1946), Sichel (1947), Harrison (1952), and a number of others."

Arsenic plays a major role during electroreflning of copper. Both the arsenic content in the anode and the arsenic concentration of the electrolyte have, in conjunction with other impurities such as lead, antimony, bismuth and oxygen, a direct influence on the quality of the cathode. The mechanisms are currently slime. inclusion and precipitation of insoluble compounds in the bulk of the electrolyte. Arsenic has also been reported to have a depassivating effect on the anode. An influence on the anode slime adhesion has also been found. A literature survey is given and these data are compared with and completed by our own results based on lab and pilot scale experiments as well as on Olen tank.house practice.

"This article is directed at plant production, engineering and maintenance personnel. Seldom does any industrial operation take the time to study the costs involved in the generation of what is probably their most expensive plant utility energy source.IntroductionIn the typical industrial plant in Canada, a 200 hp, 900 cfm, air compressor costs about $60,000* per year to operate (Fig. 1). In 1989 when BC Hydro embarked on their industrial energy management program Airflow Energy Ltd. were asked to spearhead the “Efficiency Compressed Air” portion of that program with a mandate to perform onsite overview surveys and physical hands-on testing of some 300 selected industrial plants throughout British Columbia for compressor efficiencies and wasteful air leaks (Fig. 2). The program duration lasted until 1995, during which time a tremendous amount of data were amassed relating to equipment types, clients’ operating habits, end-use applications and operating costs.During the past six years, Airflow Energy also performed somewhat similar surveys but on a smaller scale in Alberta, Ontario, the United States and the Republic of China. It was no surprise to find some inherent equipment concerns related to efficiency as well as neglected energy wasteful air leaks, so British Columbia was not alone and the problems appear somewhat universal."

"In-situ wet grab sampling and post-installation coring of soil-cement structures are typically carried out for Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) of deep mixing (DM) schemes. Wet grab sampling and testing is used to provide data to indicate that performance requirements are being met during production, in advance of coring, which typically occurs at 28 days or later, following installation. While unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests from wet grab samples provide good production indicators, industry practice often requires that acceptance criteria of soil-cement structures be based on UCS results from representative core samples.This paper outlines the approach adopted for field sampling and QA/QC testing carried out in highly variable subsurface conditions at a site located in northern British Columbia (BC), focusing on postinstallation soil-cement coring and strength testing for an extensive deep mixing scheme. A discussion on suitable methods of coring soil-cement structures and appropriate selection of samples for testing that are representative of the in-situ soil-cement structures is provided. This paper also discusses the selection strategy adopted for verification of strength and modulus parameters used for design, providing spatial and time coverage, as well as the acceptance criteria implemented, and provides comparisons with published industry recommendations.BACKGROUNDAn extensive deep mixing ground improvement scheme was completed for the development of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Facility to be located in Bish Cove, BC, Canada. The deep mixing scheme was implemented to treat very weak native deposits in-situ to support two mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls up to 20 m (66 ft) high, and their associated bulk earthworks. Within the DM area, the subsurface conditions were highly variable, ranging from deep (up to 21 m (69 ft) thick) deposits of very soft to soft clayey silt to silty clay, overlying layers of dense to very dense gravelly sand to sand and gravel, to compact deposits of silty sand (up to 15 m (49 ft) thick), overlying dense sand and gravel. Bedrock was encountered beneath the granular deposits and generally comprised granodiorite with occasional andesite dykes."

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today&apos;s business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

Correct slope adhesion is related to the conformity of the slope’s real geometry to slope planning. It is very important in mining because slope design has economic and safety implications. Slope design conditions can interfere with mining waste and ore proportion. Without a correct wall, the development of the mine can be hindered, which can reduce the amount of ore available. Furthermore, correct slope design reduces the possibility of melting and allows traffic with equipment and people in the mine. However, defining the wall is a more complex work as the characteristics of the rock require the use of blasting techniques. Therefore, Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS), in partnership with the engineering team at the Chapada Mine, at Lundin Mining, has developed this study in order to increase slope adhesion. The basis of this study is a near-field vibration test, which enables the creation of vibration attenuation law, and a seed wave damage model has allowed the characterization of the rock present at the Chapada Mine. During 1980-2000, the Florida Phosphate industry will deplete its Central Florida Polk County reserves. As a result, new mines will be built in the ?so-called? Southern Florida Reserve areas. These new mines will require new mining, beneficiation and tailings disposal technologies in that the southern reserves have different characteristics than have been encountered in the Central Florida deposits furthermore, government regulations will necessitate the development of new tailings and clay disposal methods. This paper reviews these challenges for the phosphate industry and how these opportunities can be expected to effect plant design and plant operating practices.

IN every commercial establishment,&apos; it is customary and necessary to take inventory, periodically, and to account for profits and detect losses, to achieve productiveness and enhance efficiency. So, too, in the ordered life of every individual, there is the need of periodic introspection. The exercise of the Sabbath for rational thought, the utilization of pause, or rest, from the technique of daily occupation, orient the efforts. These are the constructive opportunities by which we grow always better than we were. Thus, also, there&apos; is need of a periodic analysis of the organizations to which we belong and toward which we con- tribute. So we find&apos; reason for the fitness of our loyalty. There seems to be no half-ground for the engineer. Whatever presumes to bear his name demands either the crushing pressure of his heel or the supporting pressure of his hand.

DURING the field season of 1938, the Ontario Department of Mines assigned a combined geological and geophysical survey patty to the investigation of the location, genesis, structural relationships, and economic possibilities of the hematite deposits at Steeprock lake. The investigation was carried out by detailed mapping of the rock exposures and a magneto-metric survey of the drift-covered portions of the area. This was supplemented during the winter of 1938-39 by further geophysical work conducted on the ice. Dr. A. A. Brant, of the Department of Physics, University of Toronto, was in charge of the geophysical work for the Department of Mines in the summer and for the Sterola Exploration Company in the winter. The writer supervised the geological examination. Scope of the Paper The present paper is an attempt to acquaint the members of the Institute with the structure and mode of occurrence of the deposits, since many people are of the erroneous opinion that they are analogous to the Mesaba and Michigan deposits. It is hoped that, from this discussion, they may be able to draw some conclusions of their own regarding the nature of the deposits, and the importance and future possibilities of the region.

[The Cartersville mining district is in Bartow County, Ga., about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. Barite, limonite, ocher, amber, hematite, and, manganese oxide ores have been produced from the strict since about 1840. In the search for a possible source of manganese ore, Bureau of Mines engineers made a preliminary study of the district from September 1950 to January 1951. During this study 139 deposits were examined, and many mineral exposures were sampled. Manganese mineralization occurs as fine oxide and concretionary pellets in residual clays, as fine oxides in umberous clay, in brown-iron deposits, and in a limited quantity in mud ponds and Jig-tailing piles. The future supply of ferrograde manganese ore from the district, using current mining and benefication methods, appears limited to the recovery of the hard manganese ores deposits. Rough estimates indicate a reserve of manganese-bearing clays of about 8,000,000 long tons. This type of deposit has been extensively exploited and the larger deposits mined out to depths of from 50 to 200 feet. The remainder of these deposits are low grade, are covered with deep layers of colluvium, or lie below the ground-water table. Any future production from this source will require systematic prospecting, improved concentration, and an increase in the price of concentrate.]
