THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily , the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.^ After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's, development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water, and the streams of the anthracite . regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a National Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. Blasting regulation and restrictions are tougher today than ever before. When blasting in population centers, strict limitations are often placed on the environmental effects caused by blasting, more specifically vibration and overpressure. Blast-induced vibration can be a tricky thing to manage at times, but there are a variety of options at our disposal to help optimize and manage vibration. This paper focuses on the application of rudimentary signature hole analysis to optimize blasting vibration in localized areas surrounding a mine.

Open access to forecasts of mine geotechnical performance in the form of open databases of model results has been considered risky in the past, with a concern that the results will not be understood or will be misused. However, some modelling techniques allow very high similitude modelling of mine deformation and the results can be presented as deformation, damage and other parameters which are unambiguous and which all engineers can be more easily trained to understand. With some effort, sufficient reliability and quantifications of error are possible to overcome many of the issues.Allowing more members of the planning team to have direct access to forecasts of mine deformation will promote awareness of geotechnical issues and will act as a mechanism for improving mine designs. The models will also be more easily integrated into quality assurance programs, by providing a framework for understanding measurement results.The sufficiency requirements for undertaking simulation aided mining engineering will be presented, included some conclusions about requirements for training, quality standards and software development.

A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.SoC (O°F). Other areas where FCA has found utility has been de-icing conveyor belts, idler, idler arms and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

The jet piercing process, developed by Union Carbide Canada Ltd., is well established in blasthole production in open-pit mining. By this process, holes can be drilled, shaped and chambered for blasting. In suitable ore or rock formations, a considerable cost reduction can be achieved. This paper reviews the equipment used, relates how cost savings may be accomplished, and concludes with a mention of the most recent developments in this field. JET piercing and chambering, a process for blasthole production in open-pit mining, leads, in many instances, to improved drilling and blasting techniques and costs. It is a method of working rock with a supersonic flame and, to be most effective, depends upon a characteristic of the rock called spallability. Spalling, in this case, is the breaking away of surface particles from the rock body due to stresses caused by the thermal shock of the jet flame. Various rock properties contribute to this action, but, in general, the harder the rock the greater the spallability and the more effective and economical is the jet process. The jet process has the capability to drill, ream, shape and chamber holes for blasting.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has determined the microwave heating rates for a suite of minerals and reagent-grade compounds. Maximum temperature achieved for the samples and the time required to reach temperature are reported. Heating rates of powdered samples are presented as a function of incident powers up to 3,000 W at 2,450 MHz. Descriptions of the microwave cavities, test cells, and a thermocouple assembly used to measure temperature in the microwave field are given. Many minerals of value heated in the microwave field, whereas host rock or gangue materials did not. In general, heating rates increased as incident power was increased. Exceptions to this were some very good (CuO, Fe304, and PbS) and very poor (CaC03 and SiO2) microwave-absorbing materials that showed negligible changes with increased power. Applications demonstrating the use of microwave energy in mineral processing that are described herewith include oxidation-reduction reactions, mineral liberation, and mercury retorting-vaporization. Microwave data on mineral heating rates will provide insight to possible chemical and mineral processing applications as well as assist in predictions of processing parameters.

Low-cost housing, like automobiles, should be appraised in the light not merely of first cost but of upkeep as well. Even more important than the number of miles the family car will go on a gallon of gasoline is the number of days the family home can be kept comfortable on a ton of fuel. A furnace tender who tossed every third shovelful of coal into the ashcan would lose his job promptly, but the effect is the same when homes continue year after year to pour out precious heat through uninsulated roofs and walls, Greater economy in household heating means even more to the national economy than to the individual, especially now that we are preparing for defense. Our fuel resources, although large, should be conserved. If less fuel is used for civilian needs, augmented requirements for defense can be met without unduly increasing the number of men needed at the coal mines and oil ells or adding new producing units that might complicate ultimate readjustment to peacetime conditions when the emergency is past and over-expansion of many industries brings new problems if unnecessary demands for transportation facilities are reduced, public carriers will be able to haul more munitions, and manpower needed for national defense will be released; and by protecting workers from health hazards in their homes additional man-hours of productive effort will be gained. Moreover, reducing the running expenses of houses by proper heat insulation helps home owners to maintain payments on property, and by minimizing foreclosures helps to stabilize the financial structure of the country. In short, here is a situation where the interests of the individual and the Nation are identical and the greatest good for the greatest number is obtained without sacrifice to anyone.

Garden Well is a shear-hosted Archaean orogenic gold deposit located 100 km north of Laverton, Western Australia. The Garden Well processing plant is designed for a nominal 491 t/h milling rate and annual capacity of 4 Mt. The plant has three key innovations:1. a scrubbing circuit, expected to reduce grinding power consumption by up to 20 per cent2. a secondary cycloning/gravity circuit, providing a second opportunity for gravity gold recovery (additionally, the circuit effectively increases the leach residence time of the coarse gold bearing fraction of the leach feed by approximately 60 per cent, without any additional tankage)3. the use of mid-stream oxygenation to enhance gold recovery.The Garden Well deposit is free-milling with overall laboratory gravity/leach gold recoveries exceeding 95 per cent at a P80 grind size of 150 ¦m. Three mineralogical domains have been identified: oxide, transition and fresh, with the fresh domain having subdomains of fresh ultramafic and fresh shale. There is a high component of gravity recoverable gold in all three domains.This paper will discuss these innovations and the design challenges and the risk mitigation strategies that were adopted to ameliorate the prototyping risk. During the last decade, advances were made in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) technologies. Combined with heap leaching, these technologies made it viable to exploit large, low-grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra Mine is a good example for such a deposit. The deposit is situated in northern Chile at an elevation of about 4,000 m (14,000ft), 70 km (45 miles) north of Calama. Codelco sold 51% of the El Abra to Cyprus Minerals in June 1994, with Codelco retaining the balance. In 1993, Cyprus and the engineer on the project began discussions withinternational companies regarding the materials-handling system requiredfor the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast-track project.

The Pipeline ore body was discovered in March 1991. The construction of the new mine and mill did not start until early March of 1996. Upon completion of permitting and corporate project approval, the 289 million USD project was “fast tracked”. The commissioning began 11 months after start of construction and the project ended 40 million USD under the budget figure. The objective of this paper is to review and highlight the Pipeline Project history from discovery, design, lawsuits, permitting, and re-design through to current - 1998operating practices. Particular emphasis will review the process design, design mistakes, and design successes. The paper will review project history, feasibility, design concepts, operator training, construction, financial and the current operation. Additional discussion will review what design features worked and which did not work within the process plant.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experimental work on comminuting coal. The size distributions of coarse fragments and fine particles were obtained under different modes of energy application--drop, impact crushing, wedge impact, compression, and shear tests. Four levels of energy application were used in the impact crushing and wedge impact tests. Airborne dust and respirable air-borne dust distributions were obtained for the impact crushing and wedge impact tests. Analyses of nonairborne dust and coarse fragment-fine particle distributions were carried out on impact, wedge, compression, and shear tests. The experimental size data on nonairborne dust were fitted to normal, log-normal, power law, Weibull, log-Weibull, and exponential distribution functions. Both the nonairborne dust and the coarse fragment-fine particle size distributions are best described by Weibull distributions. For the impact crushing tests, mean product size was found to be inversely related to specific crushing energy. The particle counts in a given size range of airborne and nonairborne dust were found to increase with increased input energy and specific crushing energy. However, in another sense the particle distributions were independent of energy level; that is, the percent-ages in a given size range were approximately constant regardless of energy level. Respirable airborne dust was related to respirable-size nonairborne dust by a power law.

"Circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) combustion technology has been around for over 40 years, but over the last 6 years it has been commercially demonstrated at the 500 MWe scale at the Lagisza plant located in Bedzin, Poland. The CFB at the Lagisza plant has unique first-of-a-kind design features, such as vertical-tube supercritical steam technology and a lowtemperature flue-gas heat extraction that allows the plant to achieve high plant efficiencies of over 43% (net lower heating value). Another unusual feature for a coal power plant is that this plant meets all its atmospheric emission permit levels without any post-combustion de-NOx or de-SOx equipment such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or flue-gas desulphurization (FGD).CFB clean coal power technology is entering the utility power sector just in time to help deal with declining quality in internationally traded coals and to promote the large-scale use of economic, low-quality domestic fuels. Owing to the very attractive price discounts, growing supplies of low-quality Indonesian coals are outpacing the supply of high-quality Australian, Russian, and US coals. In Germany and Turkey, the use of domestic lignites for power production provides a secure and economic energy solution while creating domestic jobs.Conventional pulverized coal (PC) boilers will have trouble accepting these off-specification coals because of their narrow fuel specifications; they typically call for heating values above 5500 kcal/kg. This limitation is not an issue for CFB technology because of its ability to burn the worst and best of coals with heating values ranging from 3900 to 8000 kcal/kg.This paper provides an outlook for future coal supply, quality, and price, as well as a review of the technical and economic benefits of CFB technology firing low-quality fuels for utility power generation."

Metallurgical process control systems in mineral plants often employ state-of-the-art monitoring analysers in an attempt to optimise plant operations and enhance mineral recoveries. These systems are unfortunately invariably fed by simplistic ‘sampling’ designs consisting of various in-stream methods or pressurised probes. These are unfortunate compromises and provide a false picture of what a mineral flotation or other process can achieve. The situation is further aggravated by some manufacturers using misleading marketing to suggest discrete cross-stream methods for metallurgical accounting and unreliable continuous in-stream off-takes for control sampling and that they are of synonymous integrity.Reliable, absolute or representative samples are often absent in many modern day concentrator plants, due to compromises around sample taking, particularly in terms of delineation and extraction errors and thus leading to sample bias. For more reliable information from online analysers we need a continuous, but much more reliable sample taken, than is current practice.Online analysers require a fully proportional and continuous supply of sample for effective process control, otherwise maximised or benchmark recoveries will be nothing but a pipe dream. Large discrete cross-stream samples from mechanically less reliable equipment cannot be used as feed to online analysers, as it will negatively impact real-time feedback and efficient process control.It is possible to build correct sampling systems that could do both process controls online and metallurgical accounting at the same time. Multotec Process Equipment (Pty) Limited, in close association with experienced sampling consultant Francis Pitard, have jointly patented a concept to achieve this and which is embodied in the design of the unique Rotating Cone® Sampler (International Patent Application No. PCT/IB2016/057464). This paper explains why the valuation of mining assets is often a very different exercise from the valuation of the shares in the mining company which owns those assets. The fundamental reason for this is that mining assets, and the shares of the company which owns those assets have different risks. In order to properly value mining securities it is essential to: ò ensure all the different risks and other factors which impact on the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares are taken into account; and determine the extent to which the different risks and other factors are addressed in the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares so as to avoid double counting or not counting at all. If the alternative, but far from consensus, view is accepted that the correct valuation methodology to apply to shares in mining companies should be based on option pricing theory then conventional valuation practice of both mining assets and shares in mining companies will need to be fundamentally reassessed.

The first indication of tungsten in the Bishop area was the discovery of scheelite concentrations in a gold placer operation in the ( since named) Tungsten Hills in 1913. After early intermittent production, the deposits of the district were slowly discovered and developed. The Pine Creek mine, located in 1916 and under the direction of Union Carbide Corporation since 1935, became the principal producer in the district. By the end of 1965, the total production of the district had reached 3,450,932 units of WO3, 17,071,242 pounds of molybdenum, and 19,599,110 pounds of copper. The topography of the district is characterized by its extreme relief, ranging in elevation from 13,986 feet to about 4400 feet in the Mount Tom quadrangle. The present topography is the result of the uplift and erosion of the Sierra Nevada and the great subsidence of the Owens Valley with its related deposition and volcanism. The general structure of the pre-Tertiary rocks consists of a series of tightly-folded metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock remnants surrounded by exposed plutons ranging in composition from hornblende gabbro to alaskite. The metasedimentary rocks consist of low- to intermediate-grade metamorphic equivalents of fine-grained sediments deposited during the Paleozoic era in a miogeosynclinal environment. Later volcanics were deposited in a eugeosyncline. The ore bodies in the Bishop district consist of scheelite-bearing tactite formed by the pyrometasomatic replacement* of calcareous sediments along the contact with an acidic granitic intrusive. A number of the metasedimentary remnants have had tungsten deposited along their edges.

IN the fall of 1953, The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd. put into operation a completely new and modern plant for sintering the rather complex assortment of materials which comprise the feed to the Lead Smelter at Trail, British Columbia. This Lead Smelter is one section of an integrated metallurgical plant producing lead, zinc, silver, gold, cadmium and other metals. Since most of the incoming lead concentrate contains appreci- able zinc values, and most of the zinc concentrate similarly contains appreciable lead values, the cross-routing of residues or tails from the respective lead and zinc plants offers obvious advantages in recovery of metals, and has been practiced for many years. A disparity has existed, however, between the output of zinc plant residue and the capacity of the Lead Smelter to treat it, with the result that over the years a stock-pile of residue had been accumulating, and by the end of World War II had reached the formidable total of half a million tons. To treat this stock-pile, in addition to all current zinc plant residues and, of course, the regular quota of lead concentrates, became a prime objective of the Lead Smelter following World War 11. In the solvent extraction -electrowinning recovery of copper from oxide or sulfide ores there is a continuous transfer of iron and other impurities from the primary leach solution to the copper electrowinning electrolyte via chemical transfer or mechanical entrainment. Iron is the principal impurity that has to be controlled in the electrolyte by a "bleeding" of the electrowinning solution. This bleeding transfers copper and sulfuric acid back to the primary leach circuit along with the iron. Copper is recovered via the solvent extraction process and generally the sulfuric acid is used as a reagent in leaching. Unfortunately, cobalt, which is added to the electrowinning solution to modify the anodic process, is irreversibly lost through the bleeding operation. This cobalt loss represents a significant operating cost to SX-EW copper producers. DiphonixTM ion exchange resin contains diphosphonic acid and sulfonic acid functional groups on a polystyrene-divinyl benzene matrix. This resin has been found to strongly and selectively extract ferric ion from copper sulfate -sulfuric acid solutions containing cobalt. Thus, an ion exchange process using DiphonixTM resin for the control of iron has been developed to replace the conventional bleed stream process. The new process minimizes the loss of cobalt from the electrowinning circuit and strips the iron into a sulfate based solution suitable for leach solution makeup. In addition, this process can effect a lowering of the total iron concentration in the electrolyte circuit with an associated increase in current efficiency. In this paper, data on the loading and elution of iron are presented. Laboratory and pilot scale data will be discussed along with information on process design and comparative economics.

Controls on environmental loading from acid rock drainage (ARD) are not well understood in waste rock material. In particular, relationships between subsurface flow and the timing, duration, and intensity of leaching of metals and acidity from waste rock dumps remain ill defined. This study investigates field-scale relationships between subsurface flow processes and geochemical processes in unsaturated waste rock. A 12-metre tall, unsaturated waste rock pile, constructed in 1994, was deconstructed and sampled at Key Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, during the summer of 2000. A detailed sampling methodology was developed to characterise physical and chemical properties of waste rock material within the waste rock pile. Physical properties were characterised by measuring soil-water suction, volumetric water content, and grain-size distribution at 60 random locations within the pile and grain-size distribution at 20 grid locations within the pile. Attempts to develop a field-based soil water characteristic curve from physical field-data failed due to spatial variability and hysteresis of waste rock properties. As a result, grain-size distribution was used as a relative measure of subsurface flow. Paste pH, pore-water geochemistry, mineralogy, and water-soluble extraction results were used to characterise geochemical processes and sulfide oxidation at each of the 20 grid locations. Geochemical characterisation results demonstrated the preferential weathering of marcasite relative to pyrite and chalcopyrite. Dolomite was the main buffering carbonate mineral. Gyspum, jarosite and iron oxyhydroxides were the main secondary minerals. Pore-waters contained up to 800, 11.7, and 6 mMolar (78 000, 690, 1400 mg/L, respectively) of sulfate, nickel, and uranium, respectively, suggesting significant weathering has occurred. Measures of weathering indicators show no discernable correlation with grain-size distribution nor do they show any spatial relationship within the sampled grid. Reasons for this may include limited duration of waste rock exposure to weathering and development of fluid flow-paths, and limitations of characterisation methods used. Indeed, six years may not be long enough for weathering patterns to develop due to fluid flow-paths in this unsaturated waste rock pile.
