THE-report of the advisory committee to the U. S. Bureau of Mines, on the use of oxygen in metallurgy, brings to the art of steelmaking a radical change in the method of operation of the many processes of this widely diversified industry. When completed, the improvements suggested by the use of oxygen will be far-reaching and revolutionary. As to its effect upon the iron blast furnace, the use of oxygen should be as important as any of the improvements in the art of iron smelting and should take its place beside the German "Hochofen" which was the first attempt to use a shaft for preheating the stock, and beside the hot-blast stove which heated the blast before entering the furnace. The former initially produced molten iron and the latter made unbelievable economies in fuel consumption. It would seem that a discussion of this paper would be best served by following the conclusions on page 17 of the report and analyzing them seriatim. 1. (a) A decrease in costs, due to higher smelting heats is only attainable by taking full advantage of these heat units. This is affected by, adding additional ore to the burden which in turn increases production and yields a larger tonnage upon which to figure costs. These economies appear in decreased cost per ton of iron for coke and limestone consumed, and a proportionate reduction in all items entering the cost above materials. We can take no exception to these. premises. It is a well-known fact that silicon in the iron and sulfur removed" are the result of hearth temperature, other matters remaining constant. To a practical furnaceman the most satisfactory manner of controlling a furnace is by increasing the burden. It is not necessary, therefore, to consider the question of refractories, for this discussion presupposes that the temperatures in the furnaces will be kept practically where they now stand for making the various grades of iron. The same situation obtains in regard to the height of the furnace, which, as intimated, was one of the great strides forward in this art, and its abandonment at this time, is inconceivable. The shaft prepares the stock so that at each succeeding step we have exactly the proper conditions. All the stock entering the furnace is dried and preheated. The limestone is calcined by sensible heat practically at no cost, for this is sensible heat which otherwise would pass from the top with the gases. Under normal conditions, external calcination has been attempted without tangible results. FROM the viewpoint of the oil producer, the oil refiner, the oil marketer, and the investor, in oil securities, a brief picture of the crude oil supply and demand in the present critical season of the year will be timely and interesting. Although crude oil production has been in a comparatively poor statistical position this year, increased sales and sustained refinery and crude oil prices have allowed increased profits for many oil companies. The large amount of crude oil going into storage during the present period of peak consumption, just previous to the major yearly fall decline in consumption, has caused oil producers to make plans to leave the oil in the ground for the present in several of the areas of large flush production. The present moment is looked on as the turning point in the current year.

The Eucla Basin in southern Australia is emerging as an important global source of zircon from heavy mineral sands. Understanding the geological evolution of the basin and movement of heavy minerals down peripheral paleovalleys and along paleocoastlines is essential to effectively refine exploration strategies for heavy minerals in the basin. Integration of geoscientific datasets in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment has proved to be effective in reconstructing depositional environments along the Cenozoic basin margin and in tracing the buried paleorivers that once drained broad areas of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Yilgarn and Gawler cratons, the dominantly Mesoproterozoic Musgrave and Albany-Fraser Provinces, and the Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic Officer Basin. Sea level highstands during the late Middle Eocene (39 - 36 Ma) are associated with formation of the Ooldea coastal barrier complex and the zircon-rich heavy mineral deposits at Jacinth, Ambrosia and Tripitaka. More extensive transgression during the Late Eocene (36 - 34 Ma) built the complex Barton shorelines that host the Cyclone deposit and the extensive ilmenite-dominated occurrences of the Barton West prospect. Multi-generation reworking of the source sands is indicated by the high proportion of deposits that are zircon-rich relative to titanium minerals. The age distribution of zircon grains in heavy mineral concentrates from the Ooldea and Barton barrier systems points to the Musgrave Province as the predominant ultimate zircon source. Paleorivers discharging along the northern basin margin presumably carried a sediment load that was then redistributed by easterly longshore drift to build the extensive coastal sand deposits along the northern and eastern basin margin. The south-eastern extension of these deposits was reworked during Miocene-Pliocene (15 - 2 Ma) times into a series of regressive strandlines that show angular discordance with the Eocene coastlines. This discordance is consistent with evidence for long-wavelength tilting of the Australian continent from Middle Miocene times, as the continent drifted toward a dynamic topographic low induced by convective mantle processes associated with the South East Asia subduction systems. The Dromedary and Gulliver’s deposits probably formed at this time. Ongoing research is focused on the geological features of the basin that influence heavy mineral transport, concentration and preservation, and the processes leading to deposits with high zircon content.

Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. Substantial benefits have been realised in the drill and blast department by developing empirical correlations that relate the MRMR values in the geotechnical model to a blastability index, fragmentation, required powder factor and costs. Through the courtesy of the State Department, the Bureau of Mines has received a compreensive report on the jede industry of Burma, pre- pared by American Consul Winfield H. Scott, Rangoon, Burza. This mater- ial is the main basis for the present circular, although free use also has been made of reports on the jede industry in China and Germany by consular officers in those countries, to whom footnote credit is given. The word "jade" is said to be derived from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" (hijada) meaning, literally, "stone of the side," as jade was supposed to cure pains in the side; nephrite (a jade mineral) was named from the Greek word meaning kidney, because it was formerly warn as a re- medy for kidney diseases. To the Burmeso, jade is known as "Kyauksein," or green stone, and to the Chinese, all varieties of the material are referred to as "Yu" or "Yu-chi", According to Confucius, jade was symbolical of. justice, harmony, intelligence, and humanity, and the Chinese of today believe that by using ornaments made of this stone, the wearer is. protected from the "evil eye" as well as from diser.se. Ornaments of carved jade were known to the ancient civilizations of Mexico and Peru and to the peoples of other sections. of Central and South America, Jade ornaments also have been found in the lake dwellings of Switzerland and in Crete; thile in China, as far back as the Chou dynasty (B. THE information obtained by examining and analyzing the core drillings from 15 diamond-drill holes shows that with the proper equipment little difficulty should be experienced while sinking the shafts at the 15 selected sites. Although a number of holes penetrated formations containing a high percentage of silica,, the health hazard from dust can be removed by using proper dust-control equipment. Methane was detected in small amounts in only one (hole 5) of the boreholes. The methane hazard should present no difficulty if adequate ventilation is employed while sinking the shafts.

"Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U.S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in the production of 58 million tons of fly-ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludge.s annually. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and by-products as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which makes them unsuitable for existing markets.Mineral processing techniques are useful for upgrading and utilizing combustion by-products. Fly-ash can be processed to remove unburned carbon, or utilized as a binder component in ore pelletization and agglomeration processes; bottom ash can be processed to produce certain aggregate grades; CO2 emissions can be sequestered using modified leaching techniques; and many scrubber sludge’s require processing before they can be used for producing gypsum products.The experiments described in this paper were carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion by-products, particularly flue-gas scrubber sludge. A process was developed for upgrading unoxidized Flue-Gas Desulfurization (FGD) sludge’s by removing the primary impurity (unreacted limestone). A combination of hydrocycloning followed by froth flotation reduced the limestone concentration to as little as 1.7%, while recovering 66% of the sludge weight as a clean product. The recovered limestone was sufficiently concentrated that it could be recycled to the scrubber for more complete utilization."

Centennial Coal operates the Springvale longwall mining operation which extracts coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale, and the neighbouring Angus Place mine, have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions where combinations of a relatively high stress regime and weak, laminated roof and extensive geological faulting has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life. Following development, the mines underground roadways can experience high levels of roof movement which may lead to roof falls. Multipoint wire extensometers are extensively used throughout the mine for roadway condition monitoring, and to reactively drive remedial strata support through trigger action response plans (TARPs).As a result of the use of high-density extensometer monitoring over a long period, the mines have an extensive archive of legacy data. Data processing has evolved over time in order to accommodate the increasing data volume, including direct data entry from the recently introduced hard-wired real-time monitoring instruments. It is likely that telemetric real-time instruments will be introduced in the future, which will cause another step change in data management requirements. This paper discusses the transition to and evolution of relational database management systems for extensometer and associated data.This paper also presents case studies of the use of a new software tool for reprocessing legacy data to enable time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. The software can be used proactively in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. "Although electrical energy use at copper smelters is typically about 15-20% of operational costs, it is something which is not very often analyzed and discussed at a detail level in technical papers and presentations. This paper aims to list different equipment configurations per smelter area and estimate their electrical energy consumptions versus unit of material processed. In addition chosen smelting technology and oxygen enrichment rates affect the overall electricity consumption and therefore some overall guidance is provided for efficiency gains.INTRODUCTION In principle, processing plants, such as copper smelters, require electrical and chemical energy together with some degree of human input to process input materials into desirable output form like metallic copper. From the standpoint of metallurgical plant designers, the thermodynamics of smelting, when it comes to releasing and conserving thermal energy, is sufficiently understood and frequently discussed in the literature in detail, but judging from the quantity of publications, the way how we exactly utilize electrical energy is not. This article is meant to illustrate how electrical energy consumption is distributed among different process units and equipment types at copper smelters using various smelting technologies. In general, typically about 15-20% of operational costs are related to electricity and at locations with high electricity prices the potential savings can be quite significant for the overall profitability of the plant operations. In today’s tight profit margin environment any potential savings are more than welcome. The purpose here is not to promote any certain copper smelting technology, but to open a discussion on how and where we use electrical energy, and how the overall energy use could be lowered with the implementation of newest electric power saving designs and solutions. Using the principles outlined in this article, it should be fairly easy and straightforward to replicate the calculations and even improve them wherever it is seen necessary for the greater benefit for us all in this industry"

Rare earth elements (REEs) are utilized in numerous disciplines, including chemical engineering, the nuclear industry, metallurgy, medicine, electronics, and computer technology. Recycling products containing and extracting them from effluent is necessary to satisfy the rising demand for these elements. Some studies investigate the adsorption of rare earth elements from dilute aqueous solutions to remove them from effluent. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that lab tests demonstrate high adsorption capacities, which vary widely depending on the adsorption type and conditions. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms usually describe adsorption isotherms. In addition, the finest models for describing adsorption kinetics are pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order models. The thermodynamic parameters, such as the changes in free energy, enthalpy, and entropy, provide additional information regarding the energy changes. Additional research is required to develop environmentally friendly adsorbents that can be used to remove REEs from actual mine wastewater.

Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. THE growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. Historically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treatment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European universities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with the university departments of the other sciences.

The measurement and management of deformation in underground excavations is a key responsibility of geotechnical and mining engineers. A critical aspect of these roles is to ensure there is sufficient ground support capacity for the expected demand.Current methodologies for monitoring deformation and ground support serviceability-limits require measuring displacement at distinct points, or using visual observations. These current methods limit the assessment to a qualitative interpretation of deformation across the entire excavation.Recent advancements of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDar) technology permit a new method for monitoring deformation that allow a full 3D image of extended sections of an excavation to be precisely scanned. The results from the comparison with subsequent scans provide valuable information on the magnitude, direction and extent of regions exceeding the ground support serviceability-limits. This new method now provides a quantitative assessment across the entire excavation being monitored.The implementation of regular scanning has been demonstrated to be highly advantageous not only at mines with swelling or squeezing ground, but also at mines with rapid seismic induced deformation. The use of LiDar technology as a routine deformation measurement tool for geotechnical and mining engineers (and further applications) are discussed in more detail in this paper.CITATION:Jones, E and Beck, D, 2017. "Rock hardness is dependent on the type and quantity of the various mineral constituents of the rock and the bond strength that exists between the mineral grains. As the book “The Complete ISRM Suggested Methods For Rock Characterization, Testing and Monitoring:1974-2006” explains, hardness is a concept of material property. As such, the quantitative measure of hardness depends on the type of the test employed.Among the three types of tests that have been used to measure the hardness of rocks and minerals: 1) indentation tests; 2) dynamic and rebound tests; 3) scratch tests, the authors of this paper chose indentation tests, more specifically the Vickers test, and complementary verified the correlation between the results of the Schmidt sclerometer tests (rebound tests) and the Vickers microhardness tests in a set of the same 9 (nine) granite rocks.The objective of this research was to verif y the correlation of one created index, based on the Vickers test that can be able to represent the rock material hardness. We know that Vickers tests determine the microhardness of individual rock minerals. A pyramidal shaped diamond is applied to the surface with a specified force. The area of the permanent residual deformation divided by the applied force is a measure of the hardness. Using the relative participation of the mineral components of the rock, we established a hardness index denominated EVM (Equivalent Vickers Microhardness).The correlation of the EVM with others strength properties and application parameters like UCS (Uniaxial Compressive Strength) to study sawability of granite blocks have presented very good results. The association of equivalent microhardness with others strength parameters, allowed to find powerful algorithms for analyzes of the rock materials behavior under diversified circumstances, as the sawability of granite blocks, as we can see in Fig. 1.Other very interesting correlations were found as the EVM values and that were obtained by the use of the Schmidt impact hammer for the superficial hardness determination."

Sampling and metallurgical test work during various phases of engineering?studies?is of?paramount importance for a robust processing plant design. When developing a process flow sheet, risks in achieving desirable financial outcomes are minimised by ensuring appropriate sampling and adequate metallurgical test work supports the engineering and cost estimation at each phase of project development.The quality and type of samples used for metallurgical test work are just as important as the metallurgical test work itself. The key characteristic required of any sample is that it represents some defined portion of a mineral deposit. Representivity should take into account the spatial orientation, lithology, alteration, degree of oxidation, mineralogy and competency of the ore such as hardness and abrasiveness. Statistically representative sampling procedures and an appropriate metallurgical test work program should be designed to bring metallurgical understanding up to feasibility study standard and to give a basis for process plant design.Snowden has observed that the quality of sampling and quantity of metallurgical test work carried out during the various phases of engineering studies are often insufficient to truly support a robust plant design. To explain in any depth the industrial relations of Broken Hill I believe that it is necessary to trace some of the many happenings that created the present industrial climate. While appreciating that our relations with the local industry are relatively good, it must be pointed out that to preserve and improve this present situation a duty is owed to everyone connected with the industry (workers, share- holders, etc.) by management and unions to see that just and reasonable agreements are found for any disputes. If the companies ever take the local position for granted it would soon die, killed by someone who may get some short term benefit, but who would lose something of incalculable worth in the long run. "Due to the low concentrations of gold, direct measurement of gold concentration in ore on belt has not been seriously considered to now. Pre-concentration or sorting strategies have largely consisted of particle sorting based on secondary characteristics such as colour, which can be successful in select cases. CSIRO has produced sample measurement results using gamma activation analysis of ~300 gm samples with accuracies of around 30 ppb at best. With this encouragement, a feasibility study into gold ore measurement on belt for the purpose of sorting pods of gold ore has been undertaken. The study described here included, prototype design options with existing industrial Linacs, extensive Monte Carlo modelling of measurement sensitivity and shielding, further sample measurement, a study of the interaction of target measurement accuracy and sorting efficiency, and a rough estimation of potential economic benefit. The projected model sensitivity of around 0.1-0.15 ppm (1 standard deviation) in 10 seconds for 1 ppm average feed result in good bulk sorting performance and intriguing economic potential.INTRODUCTION Pre-concentration or sorting strategies for gold ores have largely consisted of particle sorting based on secondary characteristics such as colour or density, which can be successful in select cases (Klein, 2010). No method is available to measure gold content for sorting in particles or even in bulk on belt, principally due to the low concentrations of gold present. In fact, in many cases it is difficult to do rapid bulk grade measurements of base metal ores with concentrations many orders of magnitude higher. By a fortunate quirk of nature gold is particularly amenable to gamma activation analysis (GAA). CSIRO has performed extensive work in GAA of samples of crushed ore (Tickner, 2017). This has resulted in the Photon AssayTM technique that is currently being commercialised through the CSIRO spinoff company Chrysos. The technique relies on the recent availability of industrial high intensity X-ray sources such as Linacs which are currently being used in industry for security, medical and sterilisation applications. This development has led to CRC ORE funding a feasibility study to determine whether on-belt measurement of gold concentration is possible at a rate and accuracy sufficient to be useful for bulk sorting, where pods of ore are diverted rather than individual rocks. The study in the first instance is based on Monte Carlo modelling that has successfully predicted the performance of the sample based gold measurements. As well as the measurement feasibility consideration was also given to the likely heterogeneity of gold ores and hence the degree to which useful separation could be achieved. This is then tied to a back of the envelope evaluation of the order of magnitude economics of bulk sorting in an example deposit."

For material or process development as well as for quality checking of materials, thermal diffusivity measurement may be the tool of choice in many applications. Especially if diffusivity is measured locally resolved, a lot of information can be read out of such a ?diffusivity image?. This paper explains the method to measure coplanar specimen like plates and lists some interpretations of diffusivity images, like inhomogeneity of sintered materials, structural voids or inclusions. Diffusivity is a material property, describing transportation of heat in solids in spatial and temporal terms. With thermo cameras it is possible, to measure diffusivity of larger areas simultaneously. The result is an area of diffusivity values that may be plotted or displayed like an image. The paper reports on both, the design and decision making for the filters in a backfill plant in Europe as well as more then 10 years of operation and maintenance experience of the vacuum disc filters installed. It begins with the first step, the filter sizing based on a sample provided by the customer, followed by the commissioning of the filter units and reports on the development of the filter performance during the following 10 years of operation. Based on the physical properties of the sample and the process targets of the client for the backfill plant, the paper shows the logic steps taken in the laboratory to ensure the target moisture, determine the required filtration area and filter size as well as the selection of the ancillary units and the formulation of the performance guarantee. The paper discusses some issues with filter operation during the commissioning phase and the actions taken. Finally, the paper concludes by highlighting the gradual change over the more than 10 years of operation and how this change affected filter performance and operating costs.
