In 1977, Congress enacted Title IV of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), providing for an "abandoned ml.ne reclamation fund". This fund, taken from a fee collected from operating coal mines, provides capital for the reclamation process. However, given the number and extent of abandoned mine sites in some states, the question of project selection is important. This paper describes a project in progress to create a Management Information System application for project ranking under multiple objectives. The benefit of this project for the need of new environmental control technologies will be discussed.

WHEN the Board of Directors of the Institute in June 1931 approved the formation of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite and its then membership of eleven, little did any of those concerned envision that twelve years later the annual Committee luncheon would attract 34, and the technical session, jointly with the Iron and Steel Division, more than 70. Yet that was exactly what happened during the February meeting just passed. And what is more important, some members of the Committee are now predicting that by 1944 over 10 per cent of the iron ore produced in the United States will come from these Eastern Magnetite properties. Chairman Crockett, in opening the meeting, advised that due to the serious illness of Meredith E. Johnson, State Geologist of New Jersey, Mr. Johnson would be unable to brief his scheduled paper, which would therefore be reserved for a later date.

"An innovative concept is proposed whereby the operating power for haul trucks in certain areas of an underground mine are reduced in order to lower ventilation costs. Airflow that must be provided for diesel-powered equipment in most jurisdictions are regulated based on engine peak power capability and engine emissions, both of which can be lowered by artificially reducing the capacity of the engine through the engine control unit. Advances in asset tracking and ventilation on demand enable this methodology and this study demonstrates that it could represent significant value for mine operators. An examination of haul truck duty cycle indicates that de-rating of engine operating power based on the truck’s location in the mine can enable a step change in ventilation rates, often with no material impact on working conditions. Methods for implementation and estimate of cost savings will be defined.INTRODUCTION Ventilation of underground workings remains a significant operating cost burden for modern mine operators. In particular, ventilation rates for underground diesel mining equipment are often defined by local regulatory bodies and are assumed to present minimal opportunity for optimization or savings, at least until battery propulsion systems can be adopted. Commonly, the quantity of air flow required is defined by the peak rated engine output power of diesel equipment. For example, Ontario Regulation 854 SS 183.1 (3) states that “The flow of air must be at least 0.06 cubic metres per second for each kilowatt of power of the diesel-powered equipment operating in the workplace”. Jurisdictions that define air flow using the prescribed CANMET or MSHA ratings use peak engine emissions to calculate air flow required for dilution ventilation. These approaches are similar in that the maximum power capability of a vehicle’s engine is used to define the ventilation rate in all areas where it travels, regardless of what power output is actually used in any of those areas. Examination of the duty cycle of a typical underground haul truck identifies a large variance in the power output of the vehicle depending on its location in the mine and the activities undertaken at these locations. For example, travel on a mining sub-level requires a fraction of the truck’s peak power due to the minimal grade and significantly reduced travel speed. So if we can reliably reduce the peak engine power capacity and engine emissions in areas where peak power is not required, we can logically cut the ventilation rates for those areas."

"SUMMARY Every tunnel designer has to consider the power of water ingress when designing a new tunnel. Either you choose solutions with simple methods to divert the ingress water or a robust system with the intention that it will give gain on low maintenance costs and a long lifetime. This article describes a new method to divert ingress water in a robust way and more economical than traditional concrete lined tunnels. This system is based on a bolt grid suspending a water tight membrane, which is reinforced and covered with sprayed concrete. The method has been in limited use in Sweden since 2005 and with continuous improvement, still going on, it is now applied for the large project “Stockholm Bypass”, a 21km long highway project. TUNNEL MAINTENANCE RELATED TO WATER INGRESS The Swedish Transport Administration maintain approximately 190 various tunnels that is constructed by a number of different methods, (Swedish Transport Adm 2015). Commonly the ground conditions are good and fairly low ground support is needed. Contrary water and winter conditions can be sever, which gives high impact onto the tunnel design and in particular methods to protect against “frost and water ingress”. During a tunnels lifetime it is common that maintenance related to water ingress occurs several times and sometimes frequent occasions every year. Such maintenance costs and consequences of lost open time for the tunnel can rapidly become higher than the initial cost of the tunnel. Thereby it is obvious that spending time during design to evaluate requirements for a suitable system against water ingress is preferred. Icicles Icicles are formed when water is below freezing degrees and drips or run from an ingress point. At very cold conditions also water flows running at high velocity freeze into ice and a rapid growth can appear. If the integrity of the tunnel traffic area is interfered by icicles they urgently have to be removed before they cause an accident. Typically the tunnel or a part of the tunnel must be closed to do such maintenance. TUNNELS FROST AND WATER INGRESS PROTECTION IN SWEDEN In Sweden methods to perform “frost and water ingress protection” are primary developed for drill and blast tunnels as it is most common tunneling method. The foundation Swedish Rock Engineering Research has done a comprehensive report SveBeFo Rapport 77 that describes water and frost prevention in Swedish tunnels up to year 2005. Below is only slight description of those various methods. Lately some more attention is paid to concrete lined tunnels made by TBM since TBMs successfully built water tight tunnels in City Tunnel (Malmö) and Hallandsås Project. When environmental demands require maintained ground water levels, water tight tunnels made by pressurized concrete lining becomes more economical and on the same time also becomes protected from icicles and water drips."

This study details a mineralogical and textural characterisation of West African iron ores with an emphasis on their behaviour during mineral processing. By means of both qualitative and quantitative characterisation, a simulation of the beneficiation process applied to these iron ores is performed. A series of different analytical tools are used, including:X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for qualitative mineralogical analysis;• qualitative optical microscopy (phase identifi cation, description of micro-textures) and (semi)• quantitative optical microscopy (counting of particles, phases and textural types); and• chemical analysis.All the information provided by these analytical methods are combined into a quantitative mineralogical and textural analysis, here called ‘modal analysis’, which enables us to simulate the capability of West African iron ores to be benefi ciated by magnetic and gravimetric separation techniques.On one hand, both qualitative XRD and optical microscopy have revealed the presence of the following mineralogical phases: magnetite, haematite, goethite and quartz. On the other hand, the chemical analyses provide us with quantitative inputs expressed as oxides. We have converted the oxides into mineralogical contents expressed as magnetite, haematite, goethite and quartz. In this way, we build a simple quantitative mineralogical analysis.Beside this, the semi-quantitative approach of the characterisation by optical microscopy also provides us with a liberation study, enabling us to split the gangue-bearing content between two types of particles:1. liberated gangue-bearing particles, and2. composite particles composed by both iron (oxhydr) oxides and gangue-bearing minerals.We have assumed that we could anticipate the behaviour of these two kinds of particles through a mineral process, by simulating the removal of at least the liberated particles of gangue. Optical microscopy also revealed a trend in the weathering profi le of the Tokadeh ore horizon with a decrease from bottom to top of magnetite and an increase of both goethite and martite showing a higher level of oxidation and hydration in the upper ore horizon.We have applied this removal extent upon the quartz content of the mineralogical quantitative analysis and we have re-calculated the quantitative mineralogical analysis considering the expected decrease in the quartz content. Finally, by converting the re-calculated (oxhydr) oxides contents into iron grades and summing them, we do obtain a fi nal simulated iron grade for the upgraded products.

Portland cement is obtained by a conventional synthesis process from a mixture of limestone and clay at high temperature (1450 °C). This work reports the possibility to obtain cement silicates via alternative methods like Solution Combustion Synthesis (SCS), which optimize both time and temperature, and the consequences to energy efficiency and mitigation of CO2 emissions. The production of one ton of cement emits between 0.62 and 0.97 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. In this process the CO2 emissions are between 21 and 59%. The combustion methods are chemical redox processes in which, at high temperature, a self-sustaining and fast wave is generated from using chemical precursors and organic fuels.

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. "Moorhouse is founded on what at the time of construction were the deepest base grouted piles ever installed in London, specifically designed to accommodate settlement from the proposed development of Crossrail. This paper describes design and construction issues associated with this project with special emphasis on the construction aspects of installing these piles in a heavily congested site in Central London.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of the deepest base grouted bored piles in a congested site in Central London in 2002 posed a number of design and construction problems. To add to the complication, the new structure's footprint is within the safeguarded zone of the proposed new cross London rail link, Crossrail. Therefore the piles were required to be designed to allow for the effects of construction of the proposed Crossrail's tunnels and a new station at Moorgate. The design and construction issues associated with this project are described in this paper and methods used to address such issues are presented.MOORHOUSE DEVELOPMENTThe new nineteen storey high Moorhouse building was commissioned by Moor House Limited Partnership and will form another new Central London landmark building by the British architect Foster and Partners. Two of the four facades feature complex geometry to fulfill the city's planning requirements. The building is a steel frame structure stabilised by a reinforced concrete core. Floor plates span between the core and the perimeter with two rows of internal columns.The complex geometry of the superstructure requires a diagonal ""bandolier"" to transfer floor loads to certain perimeter columns. Another salient feature of the superstructure is the ribs that are provided to act as sloping columns to carry the loads down to the foundations."

"A novel ironmaking technology is under development at the University of Utah. This technology produces iron directly from iron ore concentrate by gas-solid suspension reduction. Hydrogen is the main reducing agent for high reactivity and for the elimination of carbon dioxide release in this ironmaking process. The direct use of concentrates allows bypassing the problematic pelletization/sintering and cokemaking steps in the steel industry.Intrinsic kinetics of the suspension reduction of magnetite concentrate particles by hydrogen has been measured. Experiments were carried out in the temperature range of 1423-1673 K, other experimental variable being hydrogen partial pressure, the amount of excess hydrogen and particle size. Under most experimental conditions, 95% reduction was attained within several seconds, which presents sufficiently rapid kinetics for a suspension reduction process. The reaction kinetics followed the nucleation-and-growth equation, and a rate equation that contains all the effects of the experimental parameters has been obtained.IntroductionWith the rapid increase in steel production, it is critical to control CO2 emissions which is the main greenhouse gas. It is inevitable to release a huge amount of CO2 when coke and/or coal are used as the main reducing agent in producing iron. As one of the methods to reduce the CO2 emission from ironmaking, the utilization of the gaseous reducing agents and fuels, including hydrogen, has been investigated [1-6]. The use of such gases forms the basis for a new ironmaking technology under development for producing iron directly from fine concentrates by a gas-solid suspension technology. This technology would reduce energy consumption by about 40% of the amount required by the blast furnace and drastically lower environmental pollution, especially CO2 emission, from the steel industry [4]. This is accomplished by adopting H2-based reductant and bypassing pelletization/sintering and cokemaking steps. Unlike other gas-based alternative ironmaking processes using shaft furnaces or fluidized-bed reactors, the suspension reduction technology is a high-intensity process because it will not suffer from the problems that other processes do when operated at high temperatures mainly from the sticking and fusion of particles."

"Different approaches are used for calculating the ‘energy requirement’ of a process. The determination of energy requirement becomes confusing for a process in which a fuel is also a reactant. The key issue is which heat of chemical reaction should be included in the ‘energy requirement’ value. We will use the example of ironmaking processes to illustrate the problem. The different approaches essentially boil down to the question: does one include the combustion heat of the reductant used in the reduction reaction or just the heat of the reduction reaction? Depending on the viewpoint, either approach can be accepted; it is a matter of convention. There is a need, however, to select a standard approach because the absolute value of ‘energy requirement’ of a process depends on the choice. The energy requirement of a novel flash ironmaking process will be compared with that of an average blast furnace operation.IntroductionDifferent approaches are used for performing energy balance calculations and perhaps more significantly in presenting the ‘energy requirement’ of a process. The question becomes more involved for a process in which one or more reactants are also used to generate the process heat by combustion. Often the key issue is which heat of chemical reaction to include in presenting the ‘energy requirement’ of the process.It is worthwhile to note at the outset that the difference in energy requirements between different processes for converting similar raw materials to the same desired product is largely unaffected by the choice of chemical reactions to be included. However, the absolute value presented as the ‘energy requirement’ of a process can be different by a large amount depending on the approach. We use the example of ironmaking processes to illustrate the problem. In these processes, as currently practiced or under development, carbon and/or hydrocarbons (including hydrogen) are used as the fuel as well as the reactant for reducing the iron oxide mineral.The different approaches in this case essentially boil down to the following question: does one include the combustion heat of the reductant used in the reduction reaction or treat the reductant portion as just a reactant? Depending on the viewpoint, either approach can be considered acceptable. It is a matter of convention. There is a need, however, to select a standard approach because the absolute value of ‘energy requirement’ of an ironmaking process (e.g., the currently dominant blast furnace process) depends on such a choice. It is particularly important to clearly state the specific approach used when the energy requirement of ironmaking is compared with those of other industrial processes such as petrochemicals production."

Coal, as energy resource, possesses numerous characteristics and properties which all have an influence on its gasification behaviour. The two properties considered as critically important when evaluating a coal source for gasification is its mineral content and slagging behaviour. Research has indicated that slagging formation can be inhibited or even prevented by the addition of a fluxing agent. It is thus of great importance to understand the mineral interaction during gasification in order to select a suitable fluxing agent for the prevention of slagging and clinker formation in the gasifier. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effect of iron as a fluxing agent and study the transformation of the mineral and added iron during gasification. A pre-determined amount of pure elemental iron (between 2wt% and 20wt%) was added to a base case coal sample in order to study the effect of the addition of iron to the coal. The transformation of the iron in conjunction with the possible iron containing minerals present in the coal was studied by means of Mössbauer analyses. Typical characterisation techniques included proximate analyses, ultimate analyses and ash composition analyses. The ash fusion temperature analyses (AFT) were used to study and predict the slagging behaviour of the iron-spiked coal samples. Even though AFT analyses only provide an average flow property, it gives a good indication of the changes that the iron addition induces on coal properties. FactSage modelling was carried out in conjunction with the Mössbauer and AFT analyses. From the proximate, ultimate and ash composition analyses it was clear that the coal used con-formed to the average characteristics measured over an extended time period. From the AFT values it was seen that an increase in the flow temperature occurred with the addition of pure elemental iron to the coal, which can be of importance for operational purposes as to raise the gasifier temperature and not to have slagging problems to occur in the gasifier. The Mössbauer data show that he-matite is the main Fe-component that forms from the pyrite originally present and from the added iron to the coal, consistent with FactSage modelling, which shows that the partial oxygen pressure determines which mineral species will form. This study opens up new possibilities when considering operational problems experienced in in-dustrial gasifiers. Successful completion of this study and a study to look at reducing conditions in the gasifier will also add to the knowledge that already exists regarding fluxing agents.

Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 km2) to small (100 km2) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies can put limits upon the geologic interpretation of such bodies. Three examples in Montana, U. S. A. are discussed: (1) the Boulder Batholith, a late Cretaceous quartz monzonite series of intrusives of 4000 km2 outcrop area; (2) the Little Rocky Mountains, an up-domed area, in which an Eocene porphyry (130 km2) has intruded the Precambrian crystallines and lower Cambrian sediments; and (3) the Crazy Mountains, an Eocene diorite (100 km2), which has intruded the Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments. In both the Boulder Batholith and the Little Rocky Mountains, intrusive rocks are less dense than the surrounding rocks and negative anomalies are found (40 and 28 mgal, resp.). In the Crazy Mountains, the intrusive is more dense than the surrounding sediments and a sharp positive residual anomaly of 42 mgal is observed. The analyses of the gravity anomalies predict that: (1) the thickness of the Boulder Batholith is on the order of 10 to 15 kms and is concave upward; (2) the Little Rocky Mountain syenite is not a simple laccolith, but is T-shaped and extends in depth to about 16 kms; (3) the Crazy Mountain diorite is not a simple small scale series of stocks, but a large connected body extending in depth 5 kms to the basement (although nothing can be said of it within the basement because there is little density contrast). The analyses of the anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.

Several water treatment options have been studied and piloted. A process based on activity of sulphate reducing bacteria combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one process step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide and consequently metal sulphides will precipitate. The final design for the commercial scale plant is described.

The purpose of this investigation was to find whether the moduli of elasticity obtained were the same for the following methods : ( 1 ) Deformation of a borehole in a prism subjected to uniaxial stress ; ( 2 ) deflection of a thin beam of uniform cross section uniformly loaded ; ( 3 ) sonic - pulse velocity measurements , and ( 4 ) strain measurements on a prism under uniaxial stress . The rock tested was chosen for its good elastic behavior and relatively good homogeneity and elastic isotropism . The same rock was used for all methods . Results indicate that for given environmental and stress conditions the moduli obtained by each of the four methods check one another within the limits of experimental error and that the differences introduced which are characteristic for each method are smaller than physical variations within the rock tested .

DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. This paper details geometallurgical investigations undertaken at DeGrussa to date; from feasibility metallurgical test work through to geometallurgical modelling and management practices, as well as reconciliation between observations at feasibility study level and subsequent observations in production.CITATION:Condon, J, Butler, C, Hooper, B and Vass, P, 2013. Talc mining in Vermont has in recent years undergone a progressive change in mining methods and in mining equipment. Underground mines have been phased out except in special circum- stances, and continuous mining machines (CMM?s) have replaced conventional drill/blast mining systems. Talc mining in Vermont began in the late 1800?s, and has continued without interruption to date. Beneficiation (flotation) has been applied since the early 1930?s, and has provided special products for toiletries and other markets. At the present time, there are two active companies that have evolved from the cumulative absorption of nearly ten smaller operations.

This manuscript aimed to examine the impact of operating parameters on the wet grinding of talc in a vertical-type stirred media mill. Within the scope of the research, the effects of operating parameters including media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size, and grinding time were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw), and energy consumption (Em). As a result of the present research, the following optimum grinding test conditions were determined: 65% media filling ratio, 40% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. After determining the optimum grinding conditions, the Box–Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio was found to significantly affect the decrease in d50 compared to the other two parameters. Furthermore, the minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese; they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way; there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution began. In the 1850s, miners began experimenting with liquid nitroglycerine on a limited scale. This was a very sensitive and dangerous explosive. Fortunately in the 1860s, Alfred Nobel succeeded in stabilizing nitroglycerine by absorbing it in kieselguhr-and a new product, dynamite, was born. With it, miners were able to unleash the great energy of nitroglycerine for blasting purposes. But dynamite was still a very sensitive explosive. In subsequent years, other explosives of various strengths and characteristics were developed, such as blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamites, (all containing some nitroglycerine or nitrostarch), and liquid oxygen explosives. These products and their variations supplied the blasting trade for many years. A grained ammonium nitrate product containing some carbonaceous material entered the market in the 1930s. This explosive had below-zero sensitivity-meaning: a No. 6 blasting cap imbedded in it would not detonate it. A more sensitive initiator, called a primer, was needed to detonate this mixture. From Rags to Primacord to Solid-State The first initiator for an explosive charge was probably a rag slowly burning its way to the charge; this method was quite unreliable. Then came the burning fuse, which was an improvement. Next was the nonelectric blasting cap initiated by a fuse. With these initiators, a miner needed quick reflexes and good legs; upon lighting the fuse, he had to run immediately for cover. Development of the electric blasting cap that allowed for accurate timing eliminated this hazard; the electric cap, however, introduced other safety problems because of its susceptibility to extraneous electricity, e.g., ground currents, lightning, and static electricity. These caps also became available in millisecond delays. Development in the mid-1930s of Primacord, a detonating fuse insensitive to electrical currents or impact, further reduced blasting hazards, and is generally acknowledged as the safest known means of initiation. Eventually, Primacord millisecond connectors also became available for delay patterns in blasting. In the mid-1960s, the Primadet delay was introduced; it is a practical nonelectric detonator system that offers the precise timing of electric blasting caps-and is immune to the hazards or effects of extraneous electricity. Recently, Research Energy of Ohio, Inc. introduced a new type of solid-state blasting machine that combines a sequential timer and delay caps. It enables the efficient breakage of rock with a minimum amount of shock, ground vibration, and noise. Improvements in Blast-Hole Drilling World War II created an enormous demand for coal and other minerals in the U.S. and elsewhere. Great efforts and large amounts of capital were spent to find new mineral deposits and develop better mining methods. But while mechanization in mining proceeded at a rapid pace particularly in open-cut work, there was a definite lag in developing new or improved machines for drilling blast holes. The industry continued to depend largely on horizontal, churn, and pneumatic drills. No better machine was available for large scale production. The need for improvement in this phase of mining became more acute in the post-war years. Despite efforts toward further mechanization, mining costs rose rapidly because of mounting inflation and increasingly high wages. In most operations, drilling and blasting the overburden became the principal item of cost. Therefore, whatever size holes were being drilled, the holes had to be spaced so that any foot of the bore hole could be loaded with the maximum load required for the number of cubic yards of material that each foot of the hole was carrying. Much has been said about digital computer control of metal and mineral ore dressing processes, but little has been done. This pa- per discusses what practical use can be made today of a digital computer in an ore concentrator and how such application can be made successfully. A hypothetical, but commercially common, grinding and flotation circuit is presented in terms of analog measurements which can and are being made in existing plants and a centralized computer control system which is reasonable in terms of today's technology. Dangers and possible disadvantages of such an approach are discussed as well as estimated benefits. Possible future benefits are presented in terms of improved control technology. Development of new measuring devices is not considered as a criterion for computer benefits. The control systems described have been utilized successfully in existing ore dressing operations. However, the degree of success or failure of analog systems is generally left to the interpretation of management rather than absolute analysis. Many factors affect the economic operation of a mineral recovery circuit such as size of facility, flow sheet design, number of operating personnel, percent of recoverable mineral in the ore body, loss to tails, and haulage rates. In existing mills where little or no instrumentation has been used, it is extremely difficult to prove or disprove the advantage of analog control systems on one mill line versus its sisters due to the lack of standards and the lack of ability to separate final products by ton.
