"Measuring the blast pressure associated with an explosion suspended above the ground (Free Air Burst)is a common research objective in Explosive Engineering. Theoretically, the shockwave from a Free Air Burst (FAB) configuration expands radially and the shockwave is assumed to have a smooth (uniform) shock front. The way in which the FAB explosive charge is suspended, packed, and the charge geometry can affect the shockwave expansion. These factors can generate a non-uniform shock front. As the scaled distance between the pressure sensor and the FAB increases, the shockwave expansion averagesnon-uniformities into a uniform shock front, at which point the FAB suspension system becomes less critical than when the scaled distance is “close-in” (Z <3)."

The Tandem Cold Mill is composed by stands with rolls positioned so that the rolling force can be transmitted to the strip being processed. Due to the mechanical stresses inherent in the process, the roll bearings are heated and are equipped with lubrication and cooling systems. Nevertheless, there is the challenge of continuously monitoring the temperature of the bearings, which would allow preventive intervention in case of overheating. This paper presents an in-house solution to temperature measuring system applied to the backup roll bearings of a continuous Tandem Cold Mill. The system uses Zigbee technology and is integrated with the main control system, allowing early diagnosis of bearing heating and proper intervention. Results and features of the system are discussed.

The Star Lake property, located 115 km northeast of La Ronge, Saskatchewan is underlain by metamorphosed andesitic tuffs and flows which have been intruded by the dioritic to granitic Star Lake Pluton. Gold mineralization on the Star Lake property was first discovered at Ru h Lake by E. Beveridge in 1959 and by M. and E. Hird in 1961. In 1960 E. Partridge discovered Kahn 18 and Kahn 28. In 1982 the SMDC-Starrex joint venture completed geophysical and geochemical urveys including magnetics, VLF, IP/Resistivity, vegetation, bulk till and oil sampling, followed by drill testing of pecific targets. To date the most ignificant depo it is the 21 Zone which contain drill indicated reserves of 230,000 tons grading 0.5 oz/ton Au . The 21 Zone con ists of quartz with 5-10% (locally > 30%) drusy pyrite, minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, chalcocite and arsenopyrite. The 21 Zone is enclosed by a 25-50 m wide band of mylonitized monzonite. The mylonite occurs in the central portion of a 300 m wide northeasterly trending zone of brittle deformation .

Pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation for fifty years. This paper traces the history of Sherritt from its origins in northern Manitoba, and the development of the first hydrometallurgical nickel-cobalt refinery in 1954, utilizing pressure hydrometallurgy, to the modern day refinery. Sherritt&apos;s involvement with pressure hydrometallurgy during the past 50 years has included the operation of the refinery, the development and licensing of technology, incorporating pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations, to more than 30 companies worldwide, the joint venture at Moa, Cuba involving both leaching and precipitation at elevated temperature and pressure, and the production of specialty metal powders. Developments in each of these areas are reviewed.

The Crestmore Mine of the American Cement Company lies at the eastern end of the Jurupa Mountains, 50 miles east of Los Angeles. Originally, a quarry was opened in 1908 for "limestone" used in the manufacture of cement. The mining operations eventually went underground employing first a modified system of block caving and later the "room and pillar" scheme. The limestones are relatively small roof pendants preserved in an enveloping and intrusive quartz diorite. They occur as two irregular lenticular bodies roughly parallel at the top and tending towards convergence at depth. Their dip varies between 25 and 30 degrees E. The presently mined lower bed, Chino limestone, is typically composed of alternating bands a few inches to a few feet thick of medium to coarsely granular white crystalline limestone and somewhat yellowish limestone (brucite marble). A "room and pillar" scheme of mining is currently employed in the lower body of the Crestmore Mine. The levels are horizontal and access is provided by a spiraling road starting in the old quarry. The present depth of operations is an average 750 ft below the surface. Fig. 1 gives a three-dimensional general sketch of the mine. The long axis of the rooms is in an E-W direction, normal to the strike of the beds. Fig. 2 is a horizontal map of the 130 level, the deepest level mined presently. It is in this level that most of the in-situ investigations have been conducted. The present investigation was made possible by a non-restrictive grant of the American Cement Company to the University of California. With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

Limitations on allowable levels of vibration from construction activities generally consider either annoyance or damage. While activities such as drilling and roller compaction primarily create annoyance, the major concern for blasting is usually damage. Many years of research have developed correlations between peak particle velocity and either threshold or structural damage. We emphasize the term “correlation” for two reasons. First, peak particle velocity is only a single-valued representation of a vibration waveform, and does not characterize it completely. Second, a given peak particle velocity by itself, even a particle velocity waveform, will not damage anything – strain does. Why not measure strain all the time? Strain is very localized, and can vary substantially over short distances, so choosing the appropriate strain measurement can be difficult. Measurement of strain is appropriate when either the behavior of a specific structural element is needed, or the overall response of a structure can be adequately represented by a well-selected strain measurement. We will discuss the appropriateness of both particle velocity and strain as deformation and damage descriptors, in general. We will also describe a specific case history, from a tunnel project in New Jersey, correlating strain with peak particle velocity. Finally, we will make recommendations for the choice of measurement type for some common situations.

For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington&apos;s inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. "The Several approaches were tried for developing an electrochemical route for producing high purity silicon from molten salts. K2SiF6 and metallurgical grade silicon were used as the source of silicon. Molten LiF-KF and pure KF with additions of K2SiF6 were used as electrolytes at temperatures from 550 - 900 oC. Silicon was cathodically deposited and anodically dissolved in the fluoride electrolytes. High electrorefining efficiency was obtained for many elements after electrolysis experiments at constant potential or constant current. The main challenge was to reduce the contents of boron and phosphorus. Another difficulty was to remove inclusions of solidified electrolyte. The lowest energy consumption was estimated to be ~ 3 kWh/kg Si, while the best current efficiency for Si deposition was found to be ~ 95 %.IntroductionSilicon is the most important material for photovoltaic power generation devices because of high feasible efficiency, low ecological impact and slow degradation. Development of a new and less expensive route for producing silicon of the desired quality is necessary in order to make solar cells competitive. Electrochemical routes may be an alternative possibility, and many laboratory studies have been reported over the past few decades. Most of the studies have been performed in molten salts, chloride or fluoride, at moderate temperatures so that solid silicon was deposited at the cathode. The production of high purity silicon has shown an annual increase of about 25 %, due to the increasing demand of solar grade silicon (SoG-Si). For future increased use of solar energy it is important to develop alternative, more energy efficient and cheaper processes for SoG-Si production compared to the Siemens process.Common silicon sources have been SiO2 and K2SiF6 for electrowinning and MG-Si in the case of electrorefining. A serious challenge is to find an oxygen evolving anode for electrolytes containing dissolved oxides. Especially at moderate to high temperatures and in molten fluoride electrolytes this is a difficult task.Many experimental results have been reported in molten chloride electrolytes. Nohira et al. [1-3] and Chen et al. [4] cathodically deposited silicon by electrodeoxidation of solid SiO2 in molten CaCl2 by potentiostatic electrolysis. An alternatice approach is to use electrorefining of low-cost metallurgical grade silicon (MGSi) to produce SOG-Si. In previous studies [5], an MG-Si anode was used, and silicon was successfully electrodeposited on a molybdenum wire in a CaCl2 based melt. It was found that the anode was strongly passivated due to the precipitation of silicon. Also, some deposits detached from the molybdenum wire because of the poor adherence to the cathode.Considering the Cu-Si alloy which has a good segregation effect for some impurities, and should not passivate, could be a good candidate anode for electrorefining. The EKATI"" Diamond Mine commenced operation in October 1998. It is operated by BHP Diamonds Inc., which is a part of the Non-Ferrous and Industrial Materials Division of BHP Minerals, a business unit of BHP Company Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia. The EKATI"" Diamond Mine is a joint venture of BHP Diamonds Inc. (51%), Dia Met Minerals Ltd. (29%), Charles E. Fipke (10%) and Dr. Stewart L. Blusson (10%). In December 1993, an office was opened in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories specifically for the then Northwest Territories Diamonds Project (EKATI"" Diamond Mine) development. EKATI"" Diamond Mine is located 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife and 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories of Canada (Figure 1 ). The site is located in a remote tundra area of continuous permafrost, north of the tree line, which is part of the Canadian Shield. Wekweti (Snare Lake), a Dogrib community approximately 180 kilometres southwest of the project, is the closest neighbour. The mining area and facilities lie within the 10 960 hectares land leases held by the joint venture. The total claim block (core zone and buffer zone joint ventures) covers 344 000 hectares. To date, more than one hundred kimberlite pipes have been identified within the claims. Five of these provide the basis for the present mine plan. Total capital investment in the project is over C$700 million. At full production employment will be about 600, including employees and long-term contractors, with over 33% being Aboriginal from the Northwest Territories.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a full-scale test of a composite polyurethane-aggregate seal in a hydrostatic chamber at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. This composite seal consisted of a polyurethane and limestone aggregate core that was formed between two concrete block walls. In the hydro-static chamber test, water is used to pressurize the seal. During the test, the maximum average water pressure the seal was able to withstand was 18.9 psi. Further, the seal began to yield at an average water pressure of only 17 psi. At the time of the test, the minimum seal design requirement was 20 psi under 30 CFR4 75.335 (2005). Therefore, based on this test, the seal did not meet the regulatory minimum design requirement. Uniaxial compressive tests conducted on samples from the polyurethane-aggregate core revealed that both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of the material were much less than that for polyurethane only with a density of 10.0?12.0 lb/ft3. The significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture results from the formation of a soft polyurethane foam around each piece of aggregate. The formation of the soft foam seems to be caused by residual moisture from the aggregate. The moisture also caused the density of the polyurethane in the polyurethane-aggregate mixture to be less than the design requirements. The lower density of the polyurethane in the mixture, along with the formation of zones of pure polyurethane only, resulted in the overall seal density being less than the design requirements. During seal construction, steps were taken to control the moisture, but were not successful. An analysis of the seal failure showed that the calculated shear stresses at failure and the estimated shear strength of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture are fairly close. This suggests that the strength properties of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture along with a weak zone of poorly bonded aggregate controlled the maximum pressure the seal could withstand. At the time of the seal testing, the minimum design requirement was 20 psi, as specified at 30 CFR 75.335 (2005). New emergency temporary standards for seal designs were promulgated on May 22, 2007, with a minimum requirement of 50 psi under specified conditions. However, it will be shown that the evaluation of the polyurethane seal performance as designed to meet the older 20-psi criterion can be relevant to the design requirements under the new standards.

Magnetic separation of iron ores is one of the fastest-growing segments of the minerals beneficiation industry. The tonnage of taconite ores processed annually by magnetic separation will, in a few years, reach 100 million. Magnetic separation occupies an attractive position in the field of ore beneficiation. It is a simple yet effective method, used for some 150 years and steadily growing more important. This type of beneficiation orginated in 1792, when William Ful-larton was issued a British patent covering the separation of iron ore by magnetic attraction. What is magnetism, and why are some materials capable of being magnetized and others not The study involves many unknowns, and even a partial answer to these questions would be a dissertation in solid state physics and perhaps other fields of science. But the last two decades have revealed basic facts as to why certain materials are magnetic and what happens to them when they are magnetized. Some of the newer studies in solid state physics have developed a theory that can be applied to studies of magnetism. It is claimed that magnetism stems fundamentally from the spin of electrons in atoms that tend to go in pairs, spinning in opposite directions. The atom as a whole can act as a magnet only when there is an imbalance of electronic spin. Whenever an atom has an odd number of electrons, therefore, this imbalance exists. This neutralizing effect explains why a piece of material that contains atomic magnets is not necessarily magnetic. The physicists tell us that iron is composed of many small magnetized regions called domains, which consist individually of millions of atoms. The piece of iron becomes magnetized when an external force lines up these domains in the same direction. Fundamental data developed by physicists working in fields far removed from minerals beneficiation are now available for developing better magnetic separators for ore processing. More Data Needed on Magnetic Properties of Minerals: There is less information on magnetic properties of minerals than there is for certain aspects of magnetic separator design. When the data on magnetic properties is available, it is often directed toward the study of powders for tape recorders and other highly scientific endeavors that are of little use to the beneficiation engineer. W. R. Crane&apos;s table of tractive forces, published in 1902, is still a guide in the study of magnetic minerals. Bits of other information regarding electrostatic conductivity, dielectric constant values, and permeability of various minerals have also appeared but are of small practical value in magnetic separation of ore. It is extremely important to obtain pure mineral specimens for making investigations and to record results that may be of use in studies of magnetic processes. Reference to the large volume of data developed by those concerned with analysis and design of permanent magnets soon reveals that these people have extensively evaluated the effect of various impurities on magnetic properties. Much of the science of the ferrite industry is based upon spinel-type structures which are varied by substitution of selected elements or even subtraction of elements, leaving vacant sites in the space lattice. Magnetic separators are used to beneficiate a wide variety of industrial minerals. In this application the relatively large volumes of nonmagnetics are usually the commercial products. Many low sulphidation epizonal gold and zinc-lead vein deposits within magmatic arcs are situated on basement highs, and post-date both the main volcanic episode and porphyry copper (gold) mineralization. These features are best explained by emplacement of a flat batholith a few kilometres beneath each mineral district, as recently demonstrated by geophysical data in the Baia Mare district of Romania. The batholith provides heat for the hydrothermal system, and results in extensional faulting both through up-doming of the overlying rocks, and in some arcs through incipient collapse of the thermally weakened crust under regional extensional stress. More water-rich magmas emplaced at greater depths could explain some deep epizonal and mesothermal gold deposits situated outside magmatic arcs.

U.S. environmentalists have tended to oppose all new energy developments. Their efforts may be counterproductive because opposition to, say, offshore oil directly leads to the continued use of other energy sources that may have a higher social cost. Rather than attempting to eliminate all pollution from energy production, which would be prohibitively expensive, one should minimize the social cost of energy production for the given demand. Linear programming is used to rank various oils (California State and O.C.S., Gulf of Alaska, Prudhoe Bay, Athabasca tar sands, oil shale and certain foreign crudes) in terms of their social desirability. The objective is to minimize the cost of supplying the California market, subject to resource, sulphur and oil spill constraints. Social desirability is indicated by the inclusion of the oil in the optimal solution and the size of the associated shadow price. the larger the shadow price, the greater the benefits of increased production. The more negative, the greater the cost associated with forcing consumption of that fuel. The environmental shadow prices indicate the size of the trade-off between a particular environmental standard and minimum cost. The trade-offs can be surprisingly large. any reasonable spill standard can be achieved by changing the development pattern. Generally, the further offshore, the smaller is the environmental degradation, but the more expensive is the oil. Foreign oils can be economically and environmentally inferior to domestic oils. Crude from the California O.C.S., San Joaquin Valley end Prudhoe Bay appears a valuable resource, while the Gulf of Alaska, synthetic and foreign crudes appear marginal to submarginal.

Na atualidade a produção e a utilização de DRI estão aumentando nos países desenvolvidos, principalmente devido à redução do preço do gás natural e do sucesso da nova tecnologia de extração de gás de xisto. Os custos operacionais e os problemas ambientais são, efetivamente, os fatores tecnológicos importantes a serem considerados na otimização da produção de DRI. Portanto, o teor de carbono do DRI tornou-se essencial em virtude da capacidade de gerar energia química no banho de aço, complementando assim a eletricidade em FEA, e as contribuições exotérmicas da oxidação de Si e C nos conversores LD. Este trabalho faz parte de um programa completo de cooperação entre a companhia de mineração Samarco e o Grupo de Siderurgia da PUC-Rio, lidando com as equações cinéticas da metalização e carburização simultânea em fornos de redução direta. Para este efeito, o reator foi dividido em três zonas internas: Redução, Transição e zona de resfriamento. Além disso, também foram consideradas três regiões concêntricas: periférica, média e centro. Á partir desses resultados, para um tipo de pelotas RD específico, mistura de gases utilizados nas instalações industriais e similar flui-dinâmica do processo, as equações cinéticas de metalização e carburização foram estabelecidas para cada zona. Um programa computacional METCARB, totalmente baseado nessas equações cinéticas, foi então concebido. Finalmente, uma validação adicional procedeu-se tendo em conta duas corridas operacionais industriais.
