The acid rain legislation has passed into law. This new law has caused the power generation community to investigate alternative methods to obtain compliance with the new legislation. One thing all of the power companies have concluded is the answer is not easy. Do we switch fuels to burn all low sulfur compliance coal? Maybe possibly only partial desulfurization by means of a dry sorbent system? Or, finally, maybe a wet scrubber system? Whatever the choice, the power community needs to investigate all of the alternatives. In 1988, ICF Kaiser Engineers, Inc. (ICF KE) responded to a request by the U.S. Department of Energy for the engineering development of advanced physical fine coal cleaning. ICF KE responded and was awarded a contract to conduct a multi-task program to develop an advanced flotation system to eliminate pyritic sulfur and retain as much energy as possible. ICF KE assembled a team that included members of industry, academia, and industry research organizations to conduct this multi-task program. The program includes sixteen (16) tasks. This team had personnel to help solve some of the anticipated problems and to provide industry prospective on the viability and commercial potential for any concepts proposed. The primary team consists of a major coal producer, Babcock and Wilcox, Eimco Process Equipment Company, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

"The number of investigations reported during the past year indicates that control of the health hazard due to abnormal air conditions is still a matter of serious consideration in the mining, metallurgical, and allied industries.Australia. - In an investigation into the health and working conditions of employees in the mining industry of Tasmania and Victoria3, it was found that although pulmonary tuberculosis may occur early in life, silicosis is e disease of slow evolution and does not appear frequently under the ace of 40. A period of at least ten years in the industry was found necessary to produce silicosis, and in no case was the disease found in those who had not worked underground. A very high incidence of silicosis was found in all fields among those who had worked underground 20 years and longer. There was some evidence that silicosis complicated by tuberculosis may occur earlier than uncomplicated silicosis.England. - In a paper presented before the Section on Occupational Diseases of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. L. Middleton, the medical inspector of factories, called attention4 to the occurrence of silicosis in various industries throughout the country.punitive on some quite harmless industries. Thus Middleton says: ""Where the amount of dust is small the action of the phagocytes is likely to be effective, but where it is great . . ."" What dosage is indicated by ""small"" and ""great"" in this connexion? If the meaning of ""small"" were known, would it be correct to go on to say, as he does, ""each successive dose of silica produces a summation of effects""? Then, again, would it be fair to say ""a comparatively brief period of exposure may be the only determining factor""? What, in minutes, hours, or days per week, per month,' or year, is intended by ""a comparatively brief period""? ""Intermittency of the process"" is another expression used in summing up the reasons for and against a standardization of air purity by a gravimetric process or enumeration of the particles; the arguments against such a standardization are, by Middleton, considered strong, but they are by no means convincing to us. A standard has been accepted in respect of the amount of lead in milligrams per 10 cubic metres of air; Dr. Ronald Lane showed in another paper read that adherence to this makes the occurrence of poisoning highly improbable. Mavrogordato has placed on record figures of silica dust at different stages of the improvements in the workings of the Rand mines, and such a control is in constant operation in them today.We emphasize these points because apparently the Government has taken the unusual course of legislating first and postponing inquiry to a later date, as in the ""Various Industries (Silicosis) Scheme, 1939."" The insurance companies also have a considerable interest in the matter of compensation for the silicosis risk. Where exposure - as in the refractories industries, the grinding industries, sandstone industry, and pottery industry - is day in and day out, they rightly demand a premium far higher than for any other disease scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act - 5 per cent on the wages bill. row every industrial employer, such as the paint and varnish manufacturer, who has a sack of crushed silica in his store .room, from which he extracts once a week enough to make a paste With spirit and add to his other ingredients in order to give them the necessary ""bite,"" becomes involved, and may have to abandon the use of the material or pay 8 per cent on his wages bill for an absolutely negligible risk.. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

"The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. There are a lot of big enterprises for extraction and processing of oil, gas, coal, iron, gold and rock salt. Besides of it, refractory clays, limestone, mica, gypsum and talc are mined in the region. The most important type of mineral raw material is a gold. More than 8.5% of the total mining in the Russian Federation is extracted in Irkutsk region. It is about 0.7% of the world production. The environmental problems of mining and processing enterprises are a complex set of issues that requires of the searching of effective methods to be solved. One of the key environmental problems remains the reduction of waste generation and the introduction of environmentally safe waste management. After analysing different methods of environmental impact assessment it is established that the method of Life Cycle Assessment is one of the most effective methods for mining production. This method base? on the material balance of flows of raw materials, products and waste. The method of Life Cycle Assessment allows to identify the effects of environmental pollution under the influence of mining and processing at a quantitative level and to show real quantitative forecasts of the possibility of managing the flows of raw materials and waste.INTRODUCTION The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. Placer gold is extracted by more than 40 enterprises. In connection with this, there are many plans about a building of new and reconstruction of concentrating factories. Consequently, an increase in the volume of processing is expected. The main projects are the construction of a new mill of the Mining and processing plant GOK “Vysochaishy” with a capacity of 2.6 million tonnes of ore per year; the development of the “Uhakhan” gold-field - 23 km from the “Goltsa Vysochaishy” gold-field; the opening in the Bodaibo region the next parts of the gold-deposit ""Pervenets"". "The proportion of arsenic-bearing copper concentrates that supply the copper industry is on the increase. The current strategy of miners and smelters to blend feeds to reduce average arsenic levels is rapidly becoming unsustainable as more concentrates with even higher arsenic levels enter the marketplace. In addition, the capability of smelters to manage increasing arsenic levels to more stringent and restrictive environmental standards is limited by available process technologies.CESL Cu-As Technology is a viable technical and economic alternative to traditional smelting. It offers the advantage of simultaneous leaching and precipitation of the arsenic in a single processing step while achieving high copper extractions. The process has been piloted in six separate, fully-integrated pilot campaigns for feeds ranging from ~1% to 12% arsenic in concentration. This paper will focus on the behaviour of arsenic in CESL’s leaching/precipitation step and operational factors that influence it, and on the chemical and physical characteristics of the subsequent iron-arsenic residue that represents today’s best available technology from a long-term sustainable (capital/operating costs, metal recovery, safety, environmental) perspective.The examples provided will demonstrate copper extractions approaching 99% and arsenic deportment to residue of 99%. Instantaneous settling rates of the residue were measured at 15+ m/hr. Data from subsequent short and long-term stability testing of the residue confidently support the view that the scorodite-bearing residues from the process will be stable and provide an acceptable arsenic management practice. The technology offers increased revenue and environmental certainty for miners, smelters & refiners to support the development of metallurgically challenged copper-arsenic deposits. Furthermore, results will be presented demonstrating the technology’s ability to successfully incorporate hazardous arsenic containing smelter by-products such as dust into the process feed and simultaneously extract copper value while fixing the arsenic in a stable residue."

(Pty) Ltd, Rustenburg Platinum Holdings Ltd, Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd, Western Platinum Ltd, The O'okiep Copper Co. Ltd, Messina Ltd, and Palabora Mining Co. Ltd. The following are described for each company: background, development, geology, mining, concentration, and current situation. The last-mentioned company, being South Africa's largest producer, is dealt with in greatest detail.

"Introduction;As in the case of TNT previously presented*, this report presents the results of an investigation to discover the safest and best way of utilizing picric acid for industrial blasting purposes. It describes the physical and chemical properties of this explosive, gives precautions to be observed in handling, packing, preparation of cartridges, and holes, presents the results of field tests in blasting stumps and bowlders, and compares the results with those obtained from dynamite.The investigations reported herein were undertaken and this paper has been prepared, solely to aid in the salvage of the surplus picric acid accumulated for war uses and released by the declaration of the armistice. No funds were available nor have any been appropriated with which to defray the expense of converting this picric acid into any other form or to prepare any explosive mixture from it. The sole problem was to find appropriate uses for this military picric acid in existing needs and to show that it can be efficiently used in carrying out essential civil projects.It is not intended by this publication to promote the use of picric acid as an industrial explosive further than is necessary for the proper utilization of this surplus. On the contrary, the authors believe that picric acid by itself is unlikely to come into general use as an industrial explosive, chiefly because of its cost but also as shown by the clouds of smoke it emits on explosion and the nature of the reactions it undergoes because we do not obtain from it its highest efficiency. As demonstrated in its previous use in Joveite, better results and higher efficiencies may be obtained by mixing picric acid in proper proportions with sodium nitrate or ammonium nitrate, to more completely oxidize the picric acid, and another nitrosubstitution compound, such as nitronaphthalenes, with which do desensitize and waterproof the composition formed. By such admixture not only may the energy resident in the picric acid, be more fully utilized but the cost of the resulting blasting explosive should be much less than that of picric acid."

Hot springs, geysers, steam-emanating fumaroles- these creatures of nature were until recently little more than geological curiosities, but today they are exciting the interest of engineers around the world for it has been shown that such hyperthermal areas can be profitably harnessed by man to provide heat and power for his communities. Although water from hot springs was used centuries ago to heat some Korean dwellings, is being used today by one-third of Iceland's population for similar purposes, and is finding industrial applications in New Zealand and elsewhere, the most dramatic use of geothermal energy has been its conversion into electricity. The largest installation at the present time is that at Larderello, Italy, where the Count of Larderello began to experiment in the production of electricity from geothermal steam in 1904. Eight years later after a quarrel with the local power company, the Count installed his first steam turbine, a unit of 250 kw capacity.

Coal consumption has increased globally by 57% over the last ten years. Underground mining typically provides coal of the highest calorific value and accounts for the greatest proportion of production. Despite a negative environmental image and indeed impact, this industry appears likely to thrive on the global scale for many years to come. Such mining consumes large amounts of electricity with implications for carbon dioxide emission at power plants and emits substantial quantities of the powerful greenhouse gas methane. In response to this significant carbon footprint, the European Union has funded research to examine the potential for a range of improvement technologies in a project entitled Low Carbon Mine Site Energy Initiatives (LOWCARB). Coal properties related to seams and mines, together with longwall characteristics, provide the basis for research into modelling optimally efficient methane drainage with a view to assisting mining as well as maximising electricity generation at surface and hence oxidation of the methane. Possible systems for the oxidation of very low concentration methane in ventilation air, which contributes the greatest greenhouse gas impact due to the volumes emitted, have been studied and modelled. Simulation and investigation of intelligent optimisation of electricity demand patterns provide the basis for reducing the demand peaks at mines and hence the cost and ultimately the carbon footprint of a mine, while specific investigations have been undertaken into ventilation efficiency at an unusually challenging mine and simulation of mine water pumping in order to develop an innovative method to monitor pumping systems efficiency. For post-mining use, the potential of disused shafts for compressed air energy storage to improve the operation of future electricity grids with high renewable energy penetration by reducing peak generation capacity requirements has been studied. While underground coal mining will always by definition be related to a significant carbon footprint, this paper provides an overview of a set of initiatives that can make a positive environmental impact while controlling costs across a huge global industry.

The movement of materials is normally associated with a number of problems, some more easily overcome than others. Orebodies are frequently located in remote areas to which transport lines have to be opened. In the case of Mount Isa Mines Limited, the geographical isolation from the major consumer areas necess- itates long lines of transport and communica- tion. The problems associated with transport of metals and minerals vary from time to time because of the changing industrial environment. The increased size of vessels, changes in handling methods, and the economic pressures brought on by increased costs of transport without any guarantee of aligned increase in metal prices all contribute to difficulties which have to be faced by the mining companies in their effort to reach the markets with their products.

"Large capacity piles are important type of foundation elements that are needed in case of high column loads such as in tall buildings with large span between columns. In many projects, especially if the designer uses the concept of one pile supporting one column (Hamza, 2003a & b). The axial capacity of the large bored deep foundations can be further increased by grouting the shaft skin and the base of the pile. The increase in the capacity of the piles due to grouting can be tremendous. Thus grouting appears as an ideal solution for achieving more reliable foundation and greater savings (Littlechild et al., 2000). A data base of pile load tests of instrumented grouted piles is under development in a major study aiming to propose a simple method to estimate the axial capacity of large bored grouted piles. The data base include pile load tests from projects constructed in Egypt and abroad. The main goal of this paper is to analyze pile load test(s) from one project. The tested deep foundations included 1.2 m diameter and 1.5 m diameter piles and a barrette of size 1.0mx2.8m. The instrumentation of the tested piles and barrette allowed for the separation of skin friction and base contributions to the axial load. Further, the contribution of the skin friction of every layer along the pile shaft could be identified. The results of the analysis clarified how base and shaft grouting increased the axial capacity of the pile and decreased the settlements for certain load level compared to conventional un-grouted piles installed under similar conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, significant research has been carried out to develop new techniques which are suitable to withstand problems in major projects such as high applied loads in high rise building, large spans structures projects and structures designed using the concept one pile supporting one column (Hamza, 2003a & b). Base and shaft grouting of piles are one of these new techniques which aim at decreasing the settlements and increasing the capacity of the pile under axial load that became major requirements in large projects (Stocker, 1983; Mullins et al., 2001; and Hamza, 2015).Base grouting consists of injection grout under pressure at the base of the pile after the concrete is sufficiently hard. Field evidences showed that the ultimate end bearing of base-grouted piles could be as high as 1.5 that of non-base-grouted bored piles (Suckling and Eager, 2001). Further, field evidences was provided by Shahien and El-Naggar (2015) that showed an increase in end bearing resistance due to base grouting reached to 2 to 3 times that of non-base-grouted bored pile. On the other hand, shaft-grouting causes increase in the soil density in the zone which had been disturbed by the pile construction and thereby improves the shaft resistance of the pile. Field measurements by Gouvenot and Gabaix (1975), Stocker (1983), Robson and Wahby (1994), Troughton and Stocker (1996), Byrne et al. (1998), Joer and Randolph (1998), Hamza and Leoni (1998), Littlechild et al. (2000), Hamza and Ibrahim (2002), Hamza (2003 a&b), Hamza (2015) and Shahien and El-Naggar (2015) showed that the shaft resistance of grouted piles could be nearly 1.5 to 5 times that of non-grouted piles."

Funds for this purpose hate been supplied by the State of Michigan supplemented by contributions of labor and some supplies from the Federal Government during the depression. The iron-mining companies have cooperated in securing samples and have also furnished much valuable information relative to the various formations.

"IntroductionSINCE ancient times, the precious metals have played an important role in influencing the course of history. Silver and gold happened to occur, although in small amounts, in those countries where the early civilizations developed. Their persistent brightness certainly amazed the primitive people, who also found it easy to shape them into ornaments •and implements. Ever since then their properties have made them seem desirable possessions.Use of precious metals as money was the natural consequence of man's desire for them. The possibility of changing an ornament into a tool or food at any time, and the ease with which such medium of exchange could be carried and hidden, further increased the demand for the two metals.Silver was probably discovered after gold and copper, and was undoubtedly found by prehistoric man as native silver. The oldest silver articles have been discovered in Chaldean tombs and date back to 5000 B.C. The earliest ascertained producers of silver were Asia Minor and the Iberian Peninsula. The Romans worked deposits in Spain, Britain, and France. In the Middle Ages, some silver was extracted from German deposits, and near the end of the Middle Ages systematic workings were carried on at Freiberg, Schneeberg, and Joachimsthal (1).Before the discovery of the New Continent, the Aztecs and Toltecs in Mexico, and the Incas in Peru, had made extensive use of silver. In the 16th century the Mexican deposits became the largest source of the world silver."

THE subject of this paper is apt to bring to mind wells ranging from 6000 to over 8000 ft. in depth. However, it is uncommon to pump wells at depths greater than about 5000 ft. Fig. 1 shows the number of wells being pumped at various depths by one company in Southern California. FIG. 1.-NUMBER OF WELLS BEING PUMPED BY ONE COMPANY FROM VARIOUS DEPTHS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. A few companies have a very few wells pumping at depths greater than this. This paper will deal with wells between 3000 and 5500 ft. in depth. Most California oils at these depths are between 25° and 35 gravity. The subject is so broad that it will be necessary to omit many interesting phases, and to treat others very briefly. Power, power transmission equipment, power efficiency, counterbalancing, sucker rods, pumps and volumetric efficiency will be discussed.

Costs of disposing of steel slag are estimated based on the present method and a proposed alternate method for a steel mill in the Pittsburgh area. Estimated cost data were calculated by the Bureau of Mines and do not reflect the investment and operating costs and credits of a specific steel mill and processing plant. The alternate method of steel slag disposal would result in an appreciable cost savings to the mill and concurrently supply the industrial and commercial markets with low-cost, high-quality construction materials.

Good morning and thank you for the opportunity to address this yearÆs New Zealand Minerals Conference.   As you have already heard from the Associate Minister of Energy, the Government believes that the minerals industry is an important part of our economy. In particular, our coal and lignite resources have the potential to play an important role in New ZealandÆs energy sector as both a primary fuel and as a means to produce electricity.   The Government has taken a keen interest in the primary fuel sector given the declining reserves of natural gas sector. The energy sector is a key driver of economic growth and it is therefore critical that we have a reliable supply of primary fuel as part of the energy mix.   In a global sense, New Zealand is like many other countries regarding the need to secure energy for the future. Natural gas will be a key bridging fuel in the transition from an energy market based on fossil fuels to one based on renewables over the next century.   However, natural gas as a solution to this energy transition has some pragmatic limitations for New Zealand. There is uncertainty as to when new domestic reserves of gas can be discovered and developed. And the alternative of imported LNG poses a number of costs and risks to the economy.   New ZealandÆs coal resources are vast-estimated to be enough to last hundreds of years at the current rate of extraction. The main question is can extraction be increased and sustained to meet the demand of domestic power producers and at the same time meet commitments to lucrative international markets?   At this point it is appropriate for me to place coal into context with Governments overarching policy objectives for energy. The Government has stated objectives for the energy sector emphasising energy efficiency and an increased focus of renewable energy, while still ensuring security of supply and certainty as to energy costs and risk. Coal certainly can make a contribution to these objectives going forward.

The Melbourne City Link Project has two tunnels, the Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which have been constructed by Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) under a design and construct contract. The two tunnels are located essentially under the Kings Domain, the Yarra River and, in the case of the longer Burnley Tunnel, under the inner suburb of Richmond. The Burnley Tunnel is 3.5 km long and reaches a depth of 65 m at the central Swan Street Shaft, the invert being at RL -60 m. The Domain Tunnel is 1.6 km long, with the invert reaching RL -20. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in the siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian Age Melbourne Formation. Construction aspects of the driven tunnels as related to the engineering geology have been described by Hutchison et al (1998). The Silurian bedrock is a fractured rock aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Excavation of the tunnels allowed temporary groundwater inflows which substantially de-pressurised portions of the various aquifers. This de-pressurisation provided the potential to accelerate on-going secondary consolidation rates of the Holocene Aged Coode Island Silt (CIS) and the older Quaternary Fishermens Bend Silt (FBS) deposits, in areas where these materials directly overly the aquifers. As a large portion of the urban area of South Melbourne and the old river course of the Yarra River contain extensive CIS deposits, and were within the drawdown influence of the tunnels, the management of the hydrogeological regime was very important. The permanent design of the tunnels comprised drained and undrained sections (a partially tanked design) which, along with some permanent recharge, provide long-term protection against the possibility of accelerated settlement rates. During construction TOJV implemented a comprehensive groundwater management plan to deal with issues related to the temporary drawdown of the aquifers and the temporary acceleration of settlement. This paper describes the hydrogeological regime, the effects of the tunnelling, the monitoring programs, the extensive temporary recharge system, and the consultation program that TOJV utilised to manage the hydrogeological issues.

"This paper presents key outcomes of a major Asia-Pacific Partnership project between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd.; ce projet cherche à développer et à démontrer des technologies avancées à la mine Pansan, à Huainan, en Chine. Une perspective globale a évalué les conditions fondamentales des strates et du méthane dans les couches de charbon durant l’exploitation et a optimisé les séquences d’extraction et les systèmes de captage du méthane dans les mines de charbon. The suitability of magnetic surveys flown at low altitudes to identify buried heavy mineral (HM) strands has long been accepted. This is despite the low intensity magnetic response often obtained from such strands. The fundamentals of the magnetic survey method dictate that the closer the instrument is to the source the stronger the response. As such the optimal elevation for the magnetometer is at or near the surface. Iluka sought to use a ground based magnetometer to aid in the exploration target generation process and allow accurate targeting of exploration drill holes. Following the initial trial Iluka recognised the potential additional application of data obtained by a ground based magnetometer over known strand deposits. The detail of the ground magnetic images can confirm the assumed strand continuity between cross-sections of close spaced drilling and can aid in the definition of the geometry of different generations of mineralisation. The ability to confidently determine that the deposit has not been truncated by post emplacement erosion of the mineralised deposit may enable reductions in drilling requirements as well as assisting mine planning activities. Iluka intends to investigate advanced modelling of the magnetic data to determine the level of strand geometry and HM content resolution that can be achieved from the ground magnetic survey data and its potential application in the mining grade control process.It is anticipated that the surveying of Iluka’s known resource deposits will provide the ability to correlate the magnetic response from new exploration targets with those from known deposits for a given depth, HM grade and mineralogy suite.
