The paper industry in the Pacific Northwest is a potentially large market for industrial clays. Current trends within the paper industry towards higher quality newsprint, filled and coated papers, offers an incentive for exploration in the region since the current supply of kaolin is mainly from Georgia in the southeastern U.S. Freight rates commonly exceed US$100 per tonne. The kaolin resources of the Pacific Northwest require expensive processing technologies to meet the industry specifications and it is doubtful that any large development of the local resources can be supported at the present time. Competition from high-quality regional resources of carbonates is another factor weighing against the development of local kaolin resources while there is a potential threat from shipments ofAsian and Brazilian kaolin in the early part of the 21st century.

When the Federal investigation of coal - dust explosions in mines was begun in 1908 , following a series of mine explosion disasters in 1907 , mining men generally questioned whether coal dust in air is explosive unless " gas " or methane is present , though perhaps in small amounts not detectable by a safety lamp . The experimental tests beginning in 1909 at the Pittsburgh testing gallery, and after 1911 , at the Experimental mine , demonstrated to the mining public the explosibility of coal dust in itself . There followed much controversy , both among practical mining men and scientists , as to whether the coal-dust particles uni te directly with the oxygen of the air, or whether gas is instantaneously distilled from the dust prior to explosive combustion , the gas enveloping each particle and propagating the flame from one to another . In considering methods of preventing explosions , this question made no difference for practical purposes , but it did have bearing in determining the relative inflammability of dusts of different coals . This led to the experiments by Guy B. Taylor and Horace C. Porter , on the momentary heating of the inflammable coal dusts , reported in this paper . Meanwhile , experiments on the inflammability of coal dust conducted in the Experimental mine , under my direction , and in the laboratory by J. C. W. Frazer and later by J. K. Clement and J. N. Lawrence , showed that different kinds of coal dust differ markedly in inflammability , thus confirming experiments made by Messrs . Taffanel and Durr at the Lievin Testing Station , France , and by various investigators in Great Britain . Both the French and British investigators concluded that their experiments demonstrated the distillation of volatile matter preceding inflammation .

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.

Several inorganic reagents and organic polymers were tested as depressants in the single mineral flotation of ultrafine iron oxide and hydroxylapatite with Dowfroth 250 as a frother. It was observed that the inorganic reagents and the low molecular weight polymers generally caused dispersion of the ultrafine particles, and consequently their recovery into froth products more or less equaled the recovery of water. On the other hand, the high molecular weight polymers caused different degrees of flocculation of the ultrafine particles, and their recoveries were much lower than the recovery of water. These observations pointed to a need to re-define flotation depressants in fine particle flotation. The traditional definition of a flotation depressant, i.e., to make particle surfaces hydrophilic by forming a hydrophilic film and/or by removing collector and activator coatings, is sufficient for relatively coarse particles. However, to prevent fine and ultrafine particles from floating, a successful depressant should not only make the particles hydrophilic, but also enlarge the particle sizes so that they do not enter the froth product by mechanical entrainment. Polymeric depressants are ideal for these purposes. The different schemes to use polymeric depressants in the selective flotation of fine and ultrafine particles were discussed These schemes involve the integration of the polymeric depressants into other size enlargement processes such as shear flocculation, oil agglomeration, etc., for hydrophobic particles.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 from New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be relatively widespread through much of the Tasman Fold Belts of Eastern Australia and production to date is estimated to be some 500 000 carats from a number of 'small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond contents has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia over the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives, of which 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe however, the 1200 Ma high grade Argyle lamproite and associated near-by alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable with current annual production of 40 million carats valued at approximately US$400 million. Production from the open-pit will be sustainable until at least 2003. This paper briefly summarizes the history of diamond discovery in Australia, principal diamondiferous provinces and deposits, current exploration activities and the potential for future discoveries.

"Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. THE Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, is engaged in the mining and concentrating of copper ores, and, incidentally, in the mining of coal and the production of electric power. The Company has been engaged in these various operations both on the mainland of British Columbia and on Vancouver island for the past forty-five years. This paper will attempt to cover their present operations in the Similkameen mining district of southern interior British Columbia. GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT The Interior Plateau in southern British Columbia ranges in elevation from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. In the vicinity of Princet0n, a depression in the Plateau forms a well defined basin which is floored with a series of nearly flat-lying Tertiary sediments containing some workable seams of lignite. From this basin, the upland surface rises gradually t0ward the south, from an elevation of 2,000 feet at Princet0n to 4,000 feet at Copper mountain, and 6,000 feet in the upper parts of the Similkameen basin, where it merges into the rugged and diversified t0pography of the Cascade system, with glacier inhabited peaks rising to over 9,000 feet. The valleys of Similkameen river and its tributaries are wide, having flaring sides and gentle slopes, and are separated one from another by subdued rounded spurs, of which Copper mountain is typical. The drainage of this district is taken care of by Similkameen river and its larger tributaries, such as Pasayten river, and Wolfe, Friday, and Whipsaw creeks. The name Copper mountain is applied to a gently arched, nearly flat-topped spur between the deep valley of Similkameen river to the west and the shallower valley of Wolfe creek tO the east. The mountain is appro-priately named from the number of copper deposits occurring on its sides and summit, some of which have been developed int0 an important producer, known as the Copper Mountain mine.

"A model is developed for prediction of fatigue stress life S-N diagrams for Ti-6Al-4V alloy at different conditions, using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Different factors which have influence on the S-N diagram are involved as input parameters of the NN, namely microstructure, environment, texture, test/work temperature, surface treatment and stress amplitude. As the output the S-N fatigue diagram is simulated and plotted.The model is based on standard multilayer feedforward neural network. The NN is trained with a comprehensive data set collected from the literature, using Levenberg-Marquardt training algorithm in combination with Bayesian regularisation. A very good performance of the trained Neural Network is achieved. Good correspondence between ANN"" prediction and experimental S-N diagrams is observed. Using the model S-N diagrams for different conditions are predicted and analysed. Graphical User Interface is developed for use of the model. We believe that the model will be important for practical applications in solving various problems on fatigue behaviour of the titanium alloy.IntroductionTitanium and its alloys have an increasing range of applications due to their very good combination of mechanical properties, corrosion and erosion resistance. They are currently finding widespread applications in many industries due to their desirable and versatile properties. Most important among the alloys is Ti-6AI-4Y. Jet aircraft manufacturers are the principal 'consumers of Ti-6Al-4V and it is often specified for critical parts, the failure of which could result in the loss of an entire system. A generic class of Ti-6AI-4V has been developed over the past years and it has become the best understood of all the titanium alloys. The advantages of titanium alloys include: (i) low densities, giving very attractive strength to weight ratios allowing lighter and stronger structures; (ii) superior corrosion and erosion resistance in many environments; (iii) high temperature capability. Although the titanium materials are still considered as expensive materials, for many applications the cost of titanium alloys can be justified on the basis of their desirable properties."

My subject this morning is coal liquefaction technology. Actually, coal liquefaction involves a number of technologies in a very complex system. The first slide shows the major components of such a system with arrows to indicate appropriate flows. The components are the facilities for coal feed preparation and handling; the coal hydrogenation or base liquefaction section; facilities for product separation and recovery, and in addition, facilities for the production of hydrogen from coal-based sources. A very rough break- out of the investments involved in these areas is given at the bottom of the slide. Investment is spread about equally among the three areas of operations Another way of looking at it is that the investments in what might be called support facilities are of the same magnitude as the base investment in the hydrogen facilities. Therefore, it is appropriate in a discussion of coal liquefaction technology to treat it as a system composed of a number of technologies. The next slide lists the various functions in the feed preparation section along with an indication of technology status. Storage, crushing, grinding, drying of coal all have been in commercial practice for a number of years. The slurrying and pumping of coal at least in water slurries, is practiced commercially also. The heating of coal slurries in oil to high temperatures under pressure is not in commercial practice and development and testing is going on by a number of people in this area. Some rather complex phenomena occur when coal oil slurries are heated to high temperatures.

Caterpillar unveiled a new dozer, the new Cat D10T2 dozer, that builds on the success the company has had with its D10T model. The newest version of the dozer includes refinements to its power train, automated controls and structures. The result, the company said, is high productivity with superior fuel efficiency, reliable operation with long-lived structures, as well as enhanced access for service technicians and operators. The D10T2 uses the latest load-sensing hydraulics technology combined with Cat advanced engine controls to maximize the amount of material moved for every drop of fuel burned. Improved filtration protects the fuel system, hydraulic system and power train oil system to help ensure high reliability and minimal machine downtime. Refined large structures, such as redesigned track roller frames, deliver longer service before rebuilds. Improved access and egress features enhance safety and productivity of technicians and operators, and optional powered access systems and platforms enable configuring the D10T2 for the site. Caterpillar offers the D10T2 with two variations of the Cat C27 engine with ACERT Technology. One version is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final certified, and the other is capable of achieving emission levels equivalent to EPA Tier 2 standards. Both engine configurations produce net power of 447 kW (600 hp) in forward gears and 538 kW (722 hp) in reverse gears. The engine controller automatically adjusts power output based on the direction of travel. With the new system, the D10T2 has about 20 percent more power in reverse compared to its predecessor model. The result is faster cycle times and greater productivity in certain applications. The D10T2 is suited for a variety of applications including mining, heavy construction and bulk materials handling.

Grade control programs aim to deliver economic tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. The foundation of a successful program is high quality sampling supported by geology and a suitable data management and modelling system. Underground sampling methods include chip, channel and panel samples; grab/muck pile samples; and drill-based samples. Grade control strategy is related to mining method and orebody type. Sampling protocols must be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. Holistic studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required for sample collection and preparation protocol optimisation through ‘Theory of Sampling’ application. Where possible, such programs should be undertaken early in the life of a project. Appropriate assaying procedures are also required. Program implementation will require suitably skilled individuals to train and mentor staff, with ongoing Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) monitoring and review will allow protocols and staff to be updated as required.

"A need exists for men in oil-field production work who correspond to the mining engineer of a large mining property. Some oil companies prefer to call such an employee a resident geologist, resident engineer, or a petroleum technologist. He should perhaps be more correctly termed a petroleum production engineer. The duty of such a man is to apply his scientific and geologic training practically to oil-field development work.He should be, by education, a mining, civil, or mechanical engineer, with a knowledge of geology and chemistry. Upon completion of his education, such a man should spend several years in the oil-fields. There are two means of gaining proper experience. The first method is to work for an oil company in making a detailed study of each well, collecting data on the history and production, followed by a preparation of good records, from which well logs can be prepared. From the well logs, the geologic cross-sections, peg-models, and structure contour maps can be made. These allow a comparable, detailed study of each well, which is necessary to solve many of the problems. Along with this the engineer should visit drilling wells daily for collection of samples of formations and for a proper study of how they drill. He should form friendly relations with the drillers and production foremen. The second method of gaining proper experience is to start work as a roustabout, pumper, or on the pipe¬line gang, finally working up to a tool-dresser. After three or four years of such work, the engineer may be classed as a petroleum production engineer."

Worldwide, the major Manganese ores can be separated into three different types: ?Oxidized ores (MnO2): in Australia, Gabon, Brazil,?. ?Semi-oxidized ores (Mn2O3): in South-Africa, Australia,?. ?Carbonated ore (MnCO3): in Ghana, South Africa, Kazhakstan?. The other Manganese ores are less rich but can be used locally or in the neighbour countries (China, Ukraina, India?). Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Manganese has played a big role in the steel industry process average usage ratio: 9,5 kg/mt of steel). The recent grow-up of this industry has led to an increase of Manganese ores demand. In parallel, several companies have increased their Manganese ore producing capacity. In this presentation, we explain the link between the main Manganese ores characteristics and the key different factors for an effective and low cost Mn alloys production (HCFeMn and SiMn): ?Chemistry ?Size ?Reactivity Then we will point out the advantages of Comilog ore and Sintec ® usages in various Manganese alloy metallurgical process compared with the other main ores and with the local ores. Some advised formulations for the different kinds of furnaces and alloys will be also discussed.

Column flotation continues to make inroads into applications traditionally dominated by mechanical flotation cells. For example, columns are becoming more visible as rougher flotation devices. At Royal Mountain King Mine in California, two 2.9 m (9.5 ft) diameter columns are used for rougher flotation of carbon from a gold ore (Orlich et al, 1992). In addition, work performed at BRGM in France demonstrated the superiority of column flotation over mechanical flotation with respect to design of new plants (Morizot et al, 1991). With the mounting evidence, columns can succeed in any flotation application. The primary reasons for this acceptance of columns are a general improvement in design, scale-up and operation as well as improvements in sparger design and performance. With these advances, the full benefits of column flotation can be realized. The benefits of properly designed, aerated and operated flotation columns include: ? Lower Capital Costs ? Today, the advance rate of underground roadway development by drill and blast operation is limited by the need to ventilate the toxic blast fumes after each cycle. In deep mines this usually is only possible during shift changes when the related mine sections are free of persons. This results in roadway development advance rates of 4 m per shift, or 12 m per day. For long roadways this is a limiting factor in mining development in deep mines. Companies like EPIROC, KOMATSU, ROBBINS and SANDVIK are making serious R&D efforts to disc-cutting mobile miners to overcome this bottleneck. However, today, the achieved advance rates are less than 12 m per day in hard rock. If we achieve full robotisation and/or teleoperation from a safe place for drill and blast operation of an underground roadway development section, we could eliminate this bottleneck. Poisonous blasting fumes do not affect robots and machines as long as these fumes do not create aggressive acids. If we can keep the blast fumes isolated in the roadway development section for the shift until the next ventilation opportunity (eg shift change or designated ventilation times), we can do the drill and blast cycle more often in a shift, which will significantly speed up the advance rate. This requires robotisation of all work steps in the section: surveying, drilling, charging of explosives, blasting, loading and transporting material, roof support, installation of infrastructure etc. Also, cache storage for the material is needed. Special care for the ventilation system to keep the blasting fumes under control in the section is necessary. The paper discusses the aspects needed to achieve this robotisation and the related technical and operational tasks.

The river- or dredge-coal industry of Pennsylvania is conducted on many of the rivers and creeks that drain the Pennsylvania anthracite fields. Coal thus recovered found its way into the streams as coal was being prepared for market by the anthracite industry proper, in the northeastern part of the State. The Principal rivers draining; the fields, those where dredging is taking place, are the Susquehanna, Schuylkill, and Lehigh. Several creeks - the Shamokin, Mahanoy, Wiconisco, and Swatara - also are productive sources of river or creek coal. Operations along the streams cover a wide territory, and along the Susquchanna alone; dredges are recovering coal for about 160 miles. Anthracite was a significant factor in the early industrial development of the United States. Industry used it to generate steam, and railroads used it as fuel for locomotives; but it probably was most important industrially in the smelting of iron ore. For more than a hundred years homes have been heated with this fuel. From the beginning of mining in 1807, to 1940, more than 4 billion net tons of anthracite had been prepared and shipped to market. In the preparation process much of the smaller-size coal and refuse found their way into rivers and creeks which carried the material many miles. This study is concerned with the recovery of that anthracite from those rivers and creeks.

The opposition is all kinds. There are extremists. There are quiet, sensible sounding folk who can twist numbers and facts to make their point. But they are all out to shut you down! Some of them are genuinely concerned about miners' impact on the environment. Others are just anti- society, anti-big business - small is beautiful - live naturally. The opportunity for them to make those statements on television was provided by us, the Uranium Public Affairs Task Force, as part of a media tour of the State of Idaho in May. We fielded four representatives of the industry and got 25 hours of television coverage, 22 hours of radio coverage, and print coverage by every paper in Idaho. The tour included several debates, and these clips are from two of them. Our folks creamed them! This one was so upset that he ran off the set while his mike was still plugged in, trailing studio equipment behind him. But we don't always have the opportunity to rebut them. They are making these statements all the time, everywhere they can. They have learned their trade well. They use the hearing process like A1 Hirt uses the trumpet. If the process of intervention should shut us down or prevent us from getting a license, so much to the good. But even if it doesn't - they win - for it causes delay - delay costs money and so does complying with regulation. If they can make us uneconomic, and that's not too hard to do these days, they have won. Regulation restricts the decision process. Any time the decision process IS restricted, you face the possible loss of a more economic alternative. They are out to pile every regulation on you they can and every delay they can. Initiatives! They came after us - the uranium industry - in South Dakota and Montana last year. They won in Montana. We tried to reverse it in the legislature, but they were too frightened of public reaction to do it. They did put it on the ballot for reversal in November of '82. That puts it squarely up to us to influence the public so we can win a campaign. There will be more initiatives, and at local levels as well as at state. We must join together and win! The public generally supports the continued operation of nuclear power plants. They about split on whether to build more. But they strongly support regulating the industry more stringently. Every survey reflects concern about safety and the desire for the government to take responsibility and regulate. You and I know that regulation nearly always adds cost, and only sometimes increases safety. We need to influence the creation of regulation. We need to accept responsible regulation and fight that which is counter-productive. To win in hearings, to win initiatives, to win in getting responsible regulation, we need public support. We need an informed, understanding, and supportive public. To accomplish this, we need two kinds of efforts. The first is to reach the people at the local level with local representatives of our industry. Informal conversations at church, PTA, cocktail parties, whatever. Presentations to Kiwanis Clubs, League of Women Voters, church groups - wherever we can. Facts, information in printed form, to these same local audiences with the credibility of the local sources. The second is to reach mass audiences through the media. Positive media. This can be done by advertising, but it is very expensive. We have to look to influencing the reporters and editors to get more balanced and accurate reporting. We need to get free time - interviews, debates, letters to the editors, etc. The Uranium Public Affairs Task Force was created last year to provide tools for you to use to reach these audiences (it is affiliated with the Atomic Industrial Forum). Twenty-two companies provided money and man- power. A consultant, Denver Research Group, was retained to produce materials. In this Phase I effort, we first researched what issues were of greatest concern and what were felt to be the greatest needs in materials. We determined that we did not have the funds to go out and do the job for the industry, so we decided to develop tools for the Industry to go out and do the job for itself. From the research, we determined what tools we should develop for you to use. We first developed a set of the quest- ions most likely to be asked of you and the issues most likely to be thrown up to you. We have developed a loose-leaf notebook. Each page contains one of those questions or issues, a short verbatim response that you can use, a short discussion of the subject, and references you can cite or research for further information. It is organized by subject: tailings, water radiation, etc. This book is an extremely handy tool for anyone in the industry. Each uranium location should have at least one.

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The role of the Iron & Steel industry is very important for the development of the country. The industry today directly contributes 2% of India?s Gross Domestic Product and its weightage in the official Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is 6.2%. Manganese is a main ingredient for production of steel. Almost 90% manganese is being utilized by the steel industry worldwide. Globally, there is no substitute for manganese as on date. There is huge gap between demand and production of manganese ore in the country. To meet this demand gap and to support for growth of national economy, MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited), a Government Enterprises, producing annually around 1.1 million tonnes (mt) of manganese ore and value added products, has geared up with various infrastructural activities to increase the present production capacity of 1.1?1.5 mt in 2016?2017 and 2.2 mt in 2020?2021. The paper deals with the technological improvements and infrastructural development activities of MOIL; this will help MOIL to become the market leader in manganese ore production globally in the coming years.

The recent tragedies that occurred in Brazilian territory had a greater impact than that presented in the major newspapers and led an entire industry to question the technology and techniques that were previously practiced in the mining industry. With this, there is the prospect of new projects and innovations in the most varied branches of engineering. This publication presents computational technologies to support the decision making of engineering projects aimed at the mining sector and explores the benefits obtained from the use of current technologies in the mining sector. Recent works are referenced in order to propagate not only the methodology employed in these researches, but also to provide the reader with an overview of the industry and companies that invest in technology to support their decision making in the most diverse projects gains on products and processes obtained through this practice.

The type of soil we had was a silty fine sand. It had been placed by hydraulic methods in 1904 so it was quite clean I would say less than 10% silt the rest of it was very loose sand. That I'm not certain, I've only done it on sandy soils but it would stand to reason that some sort of a number should apply because you are measuring the amount of work that you are doing to it so if the soil is fairly consistent over the site it should be able to generalize from there but I don't know for a fact that it works. Well, verifying to ourselves that this method actually worked because we weren't certain at first when we were doing it so then we would develop the numbers and then check the results.
